Modes of embodiment for an immersed experience in museums: The Royal Tank Museum.

This study examines how exhibits at the Royal Tank Museum (RTM) engage visitors through bodily experiences. The goal is to understand RTM's visitor interaction and engagement. This research fills a gap in the literature on Jordanian museums by documenting some experiential characteristics of museum exhibits and establishing a framework for evaluating embodied museum encounters. A detailed RTM episode analysis, online survey, visitor behavior observations, structured interviews, and a comprehensive questionnaire are used. Al-Karameh Hall offers embodied experiences using sensory and physical tools, while Jerusalem Hall and the Battle of Al-Latrun fall short due to fractured narratives and inadequate sensory engagement. According to the study, boosting the clarity of narratives, adding personal belongings, and strengthening the spatial connection between exhibitions and their surrounds can greatly enhance visitors' embodied experiences.

Exploring child and youth understanding of loneliness through qualitative insights and evaluating loneliness measures considering those lived experiences.

The overall goal of this paper is to enhance the understanding and measurement of loneliness by identifying key experiential characteristics of loneliness in children and adolescents, and determine whether there is a need for refined assessment tools that accurately capture that experience. In Study 1, we synthesized the qualitative research on the child and youth experience of loneliness and found shared characteristics of loneliness, with some differences related to developmental changes (e.g., understanding of contexts influencing the experience of loneliness). In Study 2, we reviewed the items from loneliness questionnaires for children and youth and found they do not fully capture the affective dimension of loneliness, that is, the breadth of emotions associated with loneliness. That gap could lead to an incomplete understanding of the phenomenon, potentially undermining the validity of research findings and the effectiveness of interventions designed to alleviate loneliness because they underplay the distress of the experience for children and young people. Addressing this shortcoming should include the development and/or refinement of measurements of loneliness for children and youth, enhancing the accuracy and relevance of loneliness assessments.

Demographic and Experiential Characteristics of Asexual Individuals and Associations with Well-Being.

The visibility and number of people identifying as asexual-those with little to no sexual attraction-have been increasing in recent years. In the current study, we examined variation in experiential and developmental milestones and psychosocial functioning in 1,726 individuals on the asexual spectrum (61.2% women, 15.0% non-binary, 14.2% men, 9.0% other gender). A lack of sexual attraction was a lifelong orientation-most (i.e., often half to two-thirds) asexual individuals reported never experiencing sexual attraction or acting on it. Identity formation processes and romantic feelings tended to be most salient in adolescence. People are identifying as asexual more recently, such that 18-22-year-olds did so recently in adolescence (ages 13-17), 23-29 year-olds did so recently in young adulthood (ages 18-24), and 30 + year-olds did so recently in adulthood (ages 25-34). This may be consistent with the visibility of asexuality increasing in recent years, providing a useful label for people. Asexual people were more out to other members of the LGBTQIA+ community but less to family, coworkers, and the heterosexual community. Being out and lower levels of internalized acephobia were associated with higher life satisfaction. We discuss these findings in the context of identity development and the mechanisms linking individual and relational characteristics to well-being in asexual populations.

Reconstructive Microsurgery and the Flow State

Introduction: “Flow states”, characterized by intense focus during complex tasks, are proposed as common to the practice of reconstructive microsurgery. Existing literature establishes close relationships between the experience of flow and key aspects of mental health. Taking a holistic approach, the paper defines flow and establishes its relevance to both microsurgical practice and to the life and well-being of microsurgeons. Means of cultivating and enhancing flow are offered with important acknowledgement of the benefits and potential pitfalls involved. Methods: The paper is based on an extensive literature review. Numerous sources are critically evaluated for research design, methodology, and consistency of results with existing literature before being synthesized for relevance to microsurgical practice. Results: Existing literature defines flow with precision by way of environmental preconditions and experiential characteristics. The relationship of flow to more general psychological health is also well-established. The effects of flow on performance and how to optimally utilize and balance flow are burgeoning topics of study. Conclusion: Microsurgeons may benefit from the explicit recognition of flow states and the application of strategies that foster and balance flow within microsurgery. Techniques such as mental visualization, mindfulness practices, and attention training are tools that may potentially enhance flow experiences, reduce stress, improve performance, and mitigate burnout. Overemphasizing flow within surgery at the expense of finding flow in life more broadly, however, can lead to negative consequences. The paper highlights the potential benefits of integrating flow states into reconstructive microsurgery, offers suggestions for finding flow effectively, and underscores the importance of harnessing flow not only within surgery but also across different life spheres to ensure a well-rounded, sustainable, and fulfilling professional and personal existence.

From virtual reality to virtual safaris: new form of participatory design in an architectural design project

ABSTRACT Virtual models have the potential to transform architectural design processes by introducing a novel form of participation of project stakeholders. With the concepts of material participation and digital materiality, this research shows how virtual models in meetings called ‘virtual safaris’ set up a space for participation by providing a tangible architectural demonstration. In virtual safaris, virtual models allow participants to imagine and co-design their experience in the future space instead of trying to interpret architectural plans, resulting in more detailed and concrete feedback. Based on observed virtual safaris and interviews, we categorised the participatory aspects of virtual models and safaris into technical features of the virtual models, experiential features of virtual safaris, and organising and arranging virtual safaris. We consider these categories as intertwined, specifying aspects of material participation. They highlight both the complexities of actual usage of virtual reality in co-design and the additional value of virtual safaris as a participatory setting. We conclude that ways of organising and arranging virtual safaris are central for achieving the transformation potential of virtual reality. We also highlight crucial aspects of meetings utilising virtual reality for practitioners and researchers in construction projects.

Reinvestigating repurchase intentions for travel apps: a comparison of China's various tiers of cities

ABSTRACT The intense competition amongst travel apps, regardless of their popularity, has made repurchase intention a critical financial challenge for travel providers. By combining the Stimulus-Organism-Response (S-O-R) framework and the New Economic Geography (NEG) theory, this research examined how city tier disparities influence the experiential features of travel apps and user repurchase intentions. Survey data was acquired from 739 travel app users in China. The findings indicate that a set of context-based experiential features significantly influences utilitarian and hedonic values, and consequently leading to a notable increase in repurchase intentions. In addition, the outcomes of a multigroup analysis revealed that China’s users located in tier 1 city (i.e. Beijing) and tier 3 city (i.e. Kunming) had distinct effects on the hypothesised relationships. Theoretically, the research provides extensive implications to information systems and tourism literatures; whilst offering some actionable insights to travel practitioners.

Autistic and non-autistic transgender youth are similar in gender development and sexuality phenotypes.

Increasing rhetoric regarding the common intersection of autism and gender diversity has resulted in legislation banning autistic transgender youth from accessing standard of care supports, as well as legislative efforts banning all youth gender care in part justified by the proportional over-occurrence of autism. Yet, no study has investigated whether autistic and non-autistic transgender youth present fundamentally different gender-related phenotypes. To address this gap, we extensively characterized autism, gender diversity, and sexuality among autistic and non-autistic transgender binary youth (N = 66, Mage = 17.17, SDage = 2.12) in order to investigate similarities and/or differences in gender and sexuality phenotypes. Neither autism diagnostic status nor continuous autistic traits were significantly related to any gender or sexuality phenotypes. These findings suggest that the developmental and experiential features of gender diversity are very similar between autistic and non-autistic transgender adolescents. Future research is needed to determine whether the similarity in profiles is maintained over time into adulthood.

Accessibility of Urban Tourism in Historical Areas: Analysis of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Safranbolu

Expansion of cities with population growth leads to the differentiation of urban texture, negatively affecting the accessibility of tourism areas in historical regions. For this reason, there is a need to develop tourism areas that enable people to experience the areas of historical heritage. Sustainable urban development, which is also the theory of the study, has become an agenda for the protection and revitalization of historical areas in order to increase accessibility to tourism. The Safranbolu Protected Area, which is one of the oldest settlements with its traditional housing texture and which is included in the UNESCO World Heritage Sites List in Turkey, was chosen as the study area. In this study, the aim is to examine the accessibility of historical tourism centers, analyze the spatial configuration of the street texture in the city of Karabük and determine the features of the formation mechanism of the Safranbolu historical region. The research questions are based on the impact of (1) the accessibility of the street network on the formation mechanism of the urban architecture and (2) the shaping of urban tourism areas in historical cities. The space syntax method was used to examine the relationship between the building features of the Safranbolu Urban Protected Area and the formation features of the space. Within the scope of the study, the accessibility of the Safranbolu historical center was examined through the street texture that shapes the city form using data from Open Street Map. Segment and axial analyses were made based on the current street network data of the city. The key findings of the research revealed that the accessibility level of the city’s street network was practically effective in shaping the Safranbolu Urban Protected Area. It was theoretically found that the streets with a high global integration value in the city have an impact on the shaping of traditional architecture and constitute important routes for tourism in sustainable development. The findings serve as a reference for researchers in sustainable development, urban planners and local governments who will use it to test the methodology for understanding the street layout of the historical area and improving the experiential characteristics of the users.

Profiles of Death Penalty Attitudes: A Latent Class Approach

ABSTRACT Objectives This study examines the heterogeneity in the demographic, normative, and experiential features of those who support, oppose, and are undecided on capital punishment to determine the complexity of characteristics that exist beyond the “averages.” This study also evaluates macro-level changes in death penalty supporter, opposer, and undecided sub-types in the U.S. over time. Methods Drawing upon national trend data from the General Social Survey (1972–2016), a series of Latent Class Analyses (LCA) are employed to identify the number, size, and compositional profile of emergent subtypes of supporters, opposers, and undecideds on the death penalty. We also examine variation in the size and relative distribution of these latent classes over five decades. Results Substantial heterogeneity among death penalty supporters and opposers was found, yielding nine and seven distinct sub-types of each, respectively. Two unique sub-types of undecideds were also uncovered. Conclusion Variation in the composition and size of these latent classes over time provides important insights into the variation in death penalty support over the past 50 years. This is the first study of which we are aware to employ an LCA to national trend data of public opinion toward the death penalty across multiple decades in the United States.

The purpose of this paper is to infer the experientiality and complementarity of the concept of school safety based on Kant's concepts of inevitability and universality, which are signs of a priori, and to critically review school safety policies based on this. Kant's philosophy is based on a priori, and the a priori that makes experience possible is a sign of inevitability that does not allow coincidences and universality that does not allow exceptions. The concept of school safety subjectively has experiential characteristics based on coincidences and exception, and objectively has a complementary nature of individual studies related to curriculum and educational administration. The institutionalization of school safety instructor qualifications or the current mandatory school safety education hours and result reporting that do not meet these empirical and supplementary characteristics of school safety have limitations that make it difficult to achieve policy results. It is necessary to implement practical school safety by establishing and implementing policies that are consistent with the empirical and supplementary nature of school safety.

Packing Heat: On the Affective Incorporation of Firearms

For countless citizens in the United States, guns are objects of personal attachment that provide strong feelings of power and security. I argue that a key reason for such tight affective bonds is that, under certain conditions, guns become integrated into their owners’ embodied experience. To flesh out this view, I explain (a) how firearms, as material artifacts, can become a part of the feeling body and (b) how this integration impacts one’s experience of self, others, and the world. I first apply the distinction between body-incorporation and body-extension by De Preester and Tsakiris (Phenomenol Cogn Sci 8:307–319, 2009) to delineate how guns can (and cannot) be integrated into lived bodies. I then introduce Ihde's (Technology and the life world: from garden to earth, Indiana University Press, Bloomington, 1990) notion of embodiment relations to elaborate on the key experiential features of technologically extended bodies and complement the previous, sensorimotor-centric accounts of bodily extension with Colombetti's (Phenomenology for the twenty-first century, Palgrave Macmillan, London, 2016) concept of affective incorporation. With this theoretical framework in place, I proceed to examine the motives and affective dynamics involved in the incorporation of guns, the practices by which this incorporation is constituted, and its impact on gun carriers’ habitual comportment. In doing so, I identify two notable contradictions: first, between a desire for the power afforded by firearms and the lack in oneself that this power implies, and second, between one’s seemingly beneficial feelings of confidence/safety and potentially harmful transformations in one’s perceptions of threat. To conclude, I discuss how my analysis challenges current theorization on technologically extended bodies and consider its relevance for ongoing debates over gun policy.

The Effects of Virtual Reality Technology on Visitor Satisfaction in the Theme Park

Virtual reality (VR) has been an innovative concept in theme park attractions. It has revolutionized all facets of the human experience, including entertainment. As virtual reality becomes more popular among theme parks, it is essential to comprehend how user engagement is evolving within these settings. This research aims to gain further insights into VR experiences in theme parks by examining two factors affecting user satisfaction: functional and experiential quality of virtual reality. Data was collected quantitatively from 120 tourists who had used VR technology at the theme park and evaluated using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). The study discovered that both functional and experiential characteristics have an essential influence on visitors’ satisfaction at the theme park.

The Role of Gratitude in Psychological Well-Being across Gender and Educational Strands

This study utilizes a quantitative approach to examine the impact of gratitude on psychological well-being across respondents of different genders and educational backgrounds. The research methodology employed is correlational and descriptive. Data was gathered from 164 participants with the use of the Gratitude Questionnaire (GQ-6) and the Depression Anxiety Stress Scales-21 (DASS-21). The study began with conducting a descriptive analysis to estimate the distribution of gratitude. This was followed by performing correlational analysis and multiple regression to investigate the association between gratitude and well-being. The findings demonstrate a strong inverse relationship between gratitude scores and DASS-21 outcomes, highlighting gratitude as a valid indicator of psychological well-being across many demographic groups. Cultural and experiential characteristics, rather than gender or educational level, appeared to have an impact on the differences in how gratitude is expressed. The study’s methodology, which utilizes self-report measures, has several limitations. To address these limitations, future research should adopt a longitudinal strategy and employ different data-gathering methods. The findings underscore the significance of gratitude in fostering psychological well-being, emphasizing its capacity as a moral gauge, motivator, and enforcer in social settings. This emphasizes the importance of gratitude in promoting communal unity and personal well-being, underlining its value in academic discourse on happiness. Considering the increasing worldwide prevalence of mental health issues, these observations provide significant viewpoints on the cultural dynamics of gratitude and its potential application in educational and therapeutic environments. Understanding smallholder preferences for joint ventures in Ghana's rice sector: Improving market access through inclusive business models

Efforts to connect farmers with markets in an inclusive manner have gained prominence within organizations like the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and Inclusive Business Models (IBMs) have emerged as a promising avenue for achieving this objective. Currently, the adoption of IBM structures remains limited, particularly in developing countries, resulting in a paucity of information on motivating factors behind farmer engagement. This study employs a discrete choice experiment to discern these preferences, focusing on a joint venture model within the rice sector in Ghana. Data from face-to-face surveys with smallholder rice farmers analysed with a latent class model revealed heterogeneity in preferences towards IBM attributes, with a majority (55 per cent) choosing alternatives that were consistent with a joint venture business model. These related to level of investment and decision making, quality standards, price, payment schedules and control. The study also identified demographic and experiential characteristics of farmers willing to engage with IBMs. Such farmers tended to be more educated, younger, possess greater experience in rice farming, manage smaller farms, have experience with contracts, invest in processing equipment, and infrequently adopt new production practices. These findings underscore the potential to enhance the quality of domestically produced rice through IBMs and advocate for government intervention to overcome barriers, especially in the context of investment. Additionally, the results suggest that targeting younger farmers with prior contract-selling experience could encourage participation in IBMs.

Giving thickness to the minimal self: coenesthetic depth and the materiality of consciousness

AbstractContemporary phenomenological psychopathology has raised questions concerning selfhood and its possible alterations in schizophrenia spectrum disorders. Although the notion of the self is central to several accounts of anomalies, it remains a question how exactly the radically minimal experiential features of selfhood can be altered. Indeed, the risk is to reduce the notion of selfhood so drastically, that it can no longer account for alterations of experience. Here we propose to give thickness to the minimal self. To do this we first discuss Sartre’s phenomenological definition of coenesthesia as the translucent matter of consciousness articulating it with the notion of existential feelings. We then draw on the historical research on coenesthesia to dig deeper in this translucent materiality identified as the element of the body. We show that selfhood, even in its most minimal level, must be conceived of with a specific elemental thickness, corresponding to a phenomenological materiality of embodiment. We argue that a phenomenological reading of coenesthesia as the bodily element of ipseity can shed a new light on the anomalies of self-experience.

“It’s a little soap opera of its own”: Fascinating green roofs offer complexity, movement, sensory engagement, and vast vistas

Green roofs are a popular way of providing environmental benefits and places where people can experience and benefit from nature, but we know very little about the features and experiential characteristics that can support this. Fascination through interest and engagement is argued to be a key component of landscapes that restore wellbeing. We explored this proposition using complementary approaches in two studies investigating green roof landscapes. The first explored fascinating visual features using a photo-based survey, with 29 diverse international green roofs. The second explored fascinating features and characteristics of experience using interviews following virtual green roof visits, asking participants for their perceptions of the view and experience while visiting. We integrated findings across studies to develop a model of green roof design. We identified complexity through space and time, movement into and of features in the landscape, multi-sensory engagement, and connecting with distance through vast vistas as key to fascinating green roof experiences. These characteristics were associated with features on and beyond the roof, both natural and built. Many of these characteristics and features are applicable to urban landscapes more broadly, however, some, such as connection with the sky and movement and process in the city, appear to be unique to elevated views and experiences and warrant further study.

Objectives This study explores the efficacy of leaner-centered education, spotlighting the lived experiences of participants enrolled in the “Eco-Friendly Smart Ship Convergence Major” offered under the Innovation University- Gwangju and Jeonnam Collaborative Program. The objective is to provide insights for the enhancement and tra-jectory of convergence education in the future.
 Methods Employing Giogri’s phenomenological method, the research seeks to understand the core essence of participants’ experiences and to unearth their inherent meanings. By using this method, the study facilitates a shift from a researcher’s perspective to that of the participants, offering a holistic understanding of their experi-ences within the convergence major. Data collection involved semi-structured, in-depth interview with nine par-ticipants who had undertaken this interdisciplinary major.
 Results The interview revealed participants’ experiences categorized into three primary themes: ‘Experiential Characteristics of Participation within the Eco-Friendly Smart Ship Convergence Major’, ‘Unique Elements of Classes within the Eco-Friendly Smart Ship Convergence Major,’ and ‘Insights Derived from Engagement in the Eco-Friendly Smart Ship Convergence Major.’ The central founding was that the program significantly contributed to individual growth through diverse experiences.
 Conclusions To achieve educational objectives, it’s imperative to present students with a comprehensive spec-trum of opportunities. Beyond the core curriculum, this encompass overseas programs, internships, and various educational initiatives that assist in career exploration. This research emphasizes the potential and significance of such collaborative convergence programs, suggesting they could represent an innovative blueprint for future edu-cational collaborations, as experienced from a learner’s perspective.

Characteristics of physical reality, virtual reality, and interface in interactive digital communication experience

ABSTRACT Communication methods in fashion design have changed with the emergence of various devices and media in the digital environment, and combining fashion design with AI, IoT, and AR has increased in the wake of the 4th Industrial Revolution. This causes an expansion of fashion design, and interactive digital communication fashion design extends bodily experience from physical reality to virtual space. This study aimed to identify the experiential characteristics of physical reality, virtual reality, and interface for interactive digital communication and develop a measurement scale for each space. It used a Delphi method collecting opinions from industry, academic, and government experts through a questionnaire. The research findings offer a tool for measuring the characteristics of interactive digital communication fashion design experiences that allow a better understanding of the significance of the communication type in each space.

The Effect of Consumer Resistance and Trust on the Intention to Accept Fully Autonomous Vehicles

Fully autonomous vehicles are a new technology that is expected to be widely accepted by consumers because of their various advantages. This study examined consumers’ intention to accept fully autonomous vehicles based on trust and resistance. To this end, consumer data were analyzed by integrating the innovation resistance model and the technology trust model. The subjects of the survey were 400 drivers between the ages of twenty and sixty-nine. As a result of the study, variables related to the “technical characteristics” of fully autonomous vehicles affected the resistance. On the other hand, “experiential characteristics” were confirmed to affect trust. Second, consumers with a high innovation propensity are more likely to accept fully autonomous vehicles when they are commercialized in the future. Third, it was found that resistance had a negative effect and trust had a positive effect on consumers’ intention to accept fully autonomous vehicles. Therefore, for consumers to accept these, technology should be developed in the direction of removing factors affecting resistance and providing factors increasing trust. As such, consumers have anxiety and concerns as well as expectations, even though they have not yet experienced a fully autonomous vehicle. In particular, since fully autonomous vehicles completely change the existing driving paradigm, more careful consideration is required in the diffusion of this technology.

Understanding Reactions in Human‐Robot Encounters with Autonomous Quadruped Robots

ABSTRACTIncidental human‐robot encounters are becoming more common as robotic technologies proliferate, but there is little scientific understanding of human experience and reactions during these encounters. To contribute towards addressing this gap, this study applies Grounded Theory methodologies to study human reactions in Human‐Robot Encounters with an autonomous quadruped robot. Based upon observation and interviews, we find that participants' reactions to the robot can be explained by their attitudes of familiarity, certainty, and confidence during their encounter and by their understanding of the robot's capabilities and role. Participants differed in how and whether they utilized opportunities to resolve their unfamiliarity, uncertainty, or lack of confidence, shedding light on the dynamics and experiential characteristics of Human‐Robot Encounters. We provide an emerging theory that can be used to unravel the complexity of the field as well as assist hypothesis generation in future research in designing and deploying mobile autonomous service robots.
