Viewing Private Collections for the Public's Purse

AbstractArt has turned philanthropist. During the month of April, three important private collections will be placed on public view for one day each. In addition to these, the Knoedler Galleries will hold an exhibition of paintings by Rembrandt, and will also have on view a collection of rare manuscripts belonging to Dr. Abraham Rosenbach. The charge for admission to these five functions is $5.00, inclusive, which will be devoted entirely to charity. These events are sponsored by the Adopt a Family Committee of the Emergency Unemployment Relief Fund.

A Trio of Exhibitions

AbstractTHREE College Art Association exhibitions have their metropolitan showings during December. An exhibition of paintings by Americans comprising forty oils by the younger group of contemporary artists was shown at the Milch Galleries from December 5 to 24. At the Durand-Ruel Galleries, the Association showed a part of the exhibition of “Flowers and Still Life” which had already been very successfully circuited through United States and Canada. Only the oil paintings included in this exhibition were shown in New York and this group was on view from December 12 to 24. From December 12 to 31 Dr. Karl Lilienfeld showed a group of Pechsteins. Upon his return from Europe, he reopened the Van Diemen Galleries under the name of Lilienfeld Galleries, Inc., acting at the same time as American representative of the Van Diemen Galleries in Berlin.

Modern Old Masters

AN annual event anticipated with interest by those who follow art activities in New York, is the open exhibition at the Kleinberger galleries. Once a year, Kleinberger, one of the most conservative houses in the city, throws open its carved Gothic doors for the populace to enter. In 1929 the occasion was an exhibition of Flemish Painting for the benefit of Mrs. Hearst's Milk Fund, in 1928 it was German Painting for the benefit of the Red Cross, in 1927 it was French Painting for the benefit of the French Hospital. This year it is Modern French Painting (Corot to Picasso) for the benefit, so far as we can ascertain, of the people of New York.

An Exhibition of Modern Austrian Painting

The traveling exhibition of Austrian painting sponsored by the College Art Association and recently shown at the E. & A. Silberman Galleries in New York shows a selection of fifty items, including oil, distemper and watercolor paintings, drawings, etchings and woodcuts. Though the selection is a very representative one, its scope does not cover the whole field, as it was not possible to obtain works from all the representative painters. First of all Oskar Kokoschka, the greatest of living Austrian artists, who is at the same time one of the very few of European fame, is not represented. Other prominent Austrians, such as Faistauer and the Carinthians Wiegele, Kolig and Bockl are also missing. If specimens of all these were to be seen, the Austrian polyphony in art would have been more adequately realized. After Paris, Vienna still continues to be the outstanding city in Europe as far as art of every sort is concerned.

Corot—Daumier Exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art

AbstractA very interesting and important exhibition of paintings and drawings by Corot and Daumier opens at the Museum of Modern Art on October 1 6 and will be on view there until November 23.Among the score of important public and private collections in Europe from which pictures have been borrowed are those of the Louvre, Mme. Jacques Doucet, and Baron Napoleon Gourgaud in Paris, the National Gallery, Eduard Fuchs, and Fritz Hess in Berlin, and Lord Berners, and Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Courtauld in London. American museums such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, and the Chicago Art Institute have made important loans. Among the great American private collections from which pictures have been borrowed are those of Mr. and Mrs. Chester Dale, and Adolph Lewis-ohn, and Dr. Josef Stransky in New York. Duncan Phillips, Washington, and John T. Spaulding, Boston.
