Editorial introductions.

Current Opinion in Cardiology was launched in 1985. It is part of a successful series of review journals whose unique format is designed to provide a systematic and critical assessment of the literature as presented in the many primary journals. The field of cardiology is divided into 14 sections that are reviewed once a year. Each section is assigned a Section Editor, a leading authority in the area, who identifies the most important topics at that time. Here we are pleased to introduce the Journal's Editor and Section Editors for this issue. SECTION EDITORS Ali J MarianAli J MarianDr Marian received his training in clinical cardiology and human molecular genetics at Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, USA. He was appointed as a faculty at the Section of Cardiology at Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, USA in 1992. He joined the Institute of Molecular Medicine in 2006 to lead the Center for Cardiovascular Genetics. Dr Marian is recognized for his research achievements in molecular genetics and clinical aspects of cardiomyopathies. He has published over 200 articles in peer-reviewed journals, which collectively have garnered over 12,000 citations and an H index of 60. He received the Young Investigator Award from the American College of Cardiology, the Established Investigator Award from the American Heart Association, the Clinician-Scientist Award in Translational Research from Burroughs Wellcome Fund, Distinguished Scientist Award from Baylor St Luke's Medical Center, and the Best Editor Award from the American Heart Association Circulation Research. Dr Marian is currently a Deputy Editor for Cardiovascular Research, Section Editor on Genetics for Current Opinion in Cardiology, and the Editor-in-Chief of The Journal of Cardiovascular Aging. He is a former Deputy Editor for Circulation Research, Associate Editor for Circulation and European Journal of Clinical Investigation. Dr Marian's research is supported by R01 grants from the NHLBI-NIH, Leducq Foundation Trans-Atlantic Network of Excellence, and local foundations. Gene KimGene KimDr Kim is a cardiologist with the Advanced heart failure, Cardiac transplant, and Mechanical Circulatory Support Program at the University of Chicago Medicine, USA. He is an Associate Professor of Medicine and the Advanced Heart Failure Fellowship Program Director. His medical school, residency, and fellowship training were completed at the University of Chicago, USA. Dr Kim also directs the Genetic Cardiomyopathy and Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Clinics at University of Chicago, USA. Dr Kim's research interests include the genetic and epigenetic regulation of heart failure and arrhythmogenesis with publications on the role of microRNAs in cardiomyopathy. His interests also include myocardial recovery, extracellular matrix in failing myocardium. He has published over 100 articles and book chapters and is an investigator in numerous clinical trials. Bhavadharini RamuBhavadharini RamuDr Bhavadharini (Dharini) Ramu is an Advanced Heart Failure & Transplant Cardiologist, Director of the Cardio-Obstetrics Program and an Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Minnesota, USA. She completed her internal medicine residency and cardiology fellowship at the University of Connecticut, USA followed by Advanced Heart Failure Fellowship at the University of Minnesota, USA in 2016. She previously served on the faculty at the Medical University of South Carolina, USA from 2016 to 2023. Dr Ramu has been an invited faculty lecturer at scientific meetings of the American College of Cardiology (ACC), Heart Failure Society of America, American Society of Transplantation, and International Society of Heart & Lung Transplantation. She is a member of the ACC's Heart Failure & Transplant Section Leadership Council, the program planning committee for the ACC's Scientific Sessions, and serves on the leadership council of the Women in Heart Transplantation & MCS Network. Dr Ramu's research interests include increasing the understanding of and reducing the impact of health-related disparities in patients with advanced heart failure, with a goal of reducing health inequities and improving the health of disadvantaged and vulnerable populations. She has served as a peer reviewer for many journals and is an investigator in heart failure clinical trials.

Nitric oxide is a compound in the body to relax and widen blood vessels Some scientists believe that nitric oxide stimulates the release of certain hormones, such as insulin and human growth hormone. Researchers have performed multiple clinical trials related to nitric oxide supplements that includes L-citrulline and L-arginine and their effectiveness, often with mixed results. Taking nitric oxide supplements offers several heart boosting effects. Reducing arterial stiffness, blood pressure, and improving carotid artery blood flow, by enhancing blood flow in the body they improve performance in sports, promote healing, enhance heart health, and provide many other potential benefits. Preeclampsia, which is a form of high blood pressure that can occur in pregnancy, can be dangerous for both the woman and baby. A 2005 study in the European Journal of Clinical Investigation Trusted Source found that pregnant women who took L-arginine supplements for a prolonged period had lower blood pressure readings than pregnant women who did not take L-arginine. Although researchers need to conduct more studies, the results are promising for women struggling with high blood pressure in pregnancy. However, there are no studies that establish how much nitric oxide supplements people should take to achieve the results.

Rebecca CogswellRebecca CogswellDr Cogswell completed internal medicine residency, chief residency, and cardiology fellowship at the University of California, San Francisco, USA. While at UCSF, she also completed a year of advanced clinical research training. She then went on to complete Advanced Heart Failure fellowship at the University of Minnesota, USA. She has been on faculty at the University of Minnesota since 2013 and is presently the Medical Director of Mechanical Circulatory Support Program. Dr Cogswell's research focus is the skeletal muscle changes that occur in end stage heart failure. Specifically, she is interested in what these changes can reveal about optimal timing of advanced heart failure therapies and using these measures to predict outcomes after mechanical circulatory support. She has built a left ventricular assist device database at the University of Minnesota and is collaborating with other centers towards answering several clinical questions in the contemporary continuous flow LVAD population. She is presently the Advanced Heart Failure fellowship director and is an active reviewer for Journal of Heart Lung Transplant and Circulation Heart Failure. She is a principle investigator for several heart failure and LVAD related clinical trials. In 2017, she was appointed to the Medtronic Heart Failure Advisory Board. In addition, she developed and directs to the Infiltrative Cardiomyopathies Clinic at the University of Minnesota. High taurine concentrations negatively effect stallion spermatozoa parameters in vitro

The target of present study was to evaluate the effect of various taurine concentrations on stallion spermatozoa during 37°C cultivation. Fresh semen was collected from 10 breeding stallions. The experimental groups were supplemented with six different concentration of taurine (in mg/ml): A – 2.5, B – 5, C – 7.5, D – 10, E – 15, F – 20 and compared to control (CON – 0). Spermatozoa motility was assessed using the Computer Assisted Semen Analyzer (CASA) system in 6 time periods (0, 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 hours). The MTT test was used for detection of viability. For measuring antioxidant activity FRAP and TOS methods were used. Significantly negative effect was observed in the samples with the highest concentration of taurine (20 mg/ml). Spermatozoa viability was not significantly affected in analysed concentrations of taurine. Significant higher antioxidant activity was detected in the sample with the highest taurine concentration. A translational evidence for cholesteryl ester transfer protein modulation by glucocorticoids: A time for reflection.

In November 2017, the Council of the European Society of Clinical Investigation (ESCI) evaluated all basic research articles published in the European Journal of Clinical Investigation (EJCI) from November 2016 to October 2017. In the final selection round, five articles of outstanding quality have been selected based on their scientific impact, quality, and novelty [1-5]. Among finalists, the article by Jorien Werumeus Buning and Lidya G. Dimova et al. entitled “Downregulation of cholesteryl ester transfer protein by glucocorticoids: a randomized study on HDL” obtained the highest consideration by the ESCI Council and has been judged as the Best Basic Research Article published in EJCI [5]. A critical role of pentraxin 3 in severe sepsis and septic shock.

As already done in the past three years, the Council of the European Society of Clinical Investigation (ESCI) will award at the next Scientific Meeting in Barcelona (May 30th-Juin 1st 2018) the best clinical research article published in the European Journal of Clinical Investigation (EJCI) from November 2016 to October 2017. In the final selection round, five clinical articles were selected based on their outstanding scientific value [1-5]. Among those finalists, the article by Caironi and co-workers obtained the highest consideration and was selected as the winner of the 2018 ESCI Award for the Best EJCI Basic Research Article [3]. Chlorthalidone: Don’t Call It “Thiazide-Like” Anymore

Recently, there has been growing interest in the idea that chlorthalidone should be preferred over thiazides when it comes to selecting a nonloop diuretic for treatment of hypertension.1–4 Depending on how these drugs are dosed, it is believed that the nonthiazide diuretic chlorthalidone might provide greater cardiovascular protection than thiazide diuretics because of its more potent and prolonged effects on blood pressure. However, given that the chemical structure of chlorthalidone is clearly distinct from the basic chemical structure of the thiazides (Figure), it is possible that the nonthiazide chlorthalidone might also differ from thiazides with respect to effects on determinants of cardiovascular disease other than just blood pressure. Yet, few if any studies have ever directly compared the effects of the nonthiazide chlorthalidone versus thiazides on potential cellular or molecular mechanisms of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality independent of blood pressure. Figure. The nonthiazide diuretic chlorthalidone and the thiazides, including hydrochlorothiazide, have sulfonamide groups (denoted within the unshaded ovals) that interact with the Zn(II) ion in the active site cleft of CA and with amino acid residues in the enzyme as well. A sulfonamide moiety is also present in the nonthiazide diuretics metolazone and indapamide (not shown), and these agents are also known to affect CA activity. However, the nonthiazide diuretics chlorthalidone, metolazone, and indapamide do not have the benzothiadiazine dioxide scaffold that is characteristic of the thiazides (denoted within the shaded oval). The structures of the nonthiazide diuretics beyond the sulfonamide group are clearly different from those of the thiazides and contribute to different effects of the various diuretics on CA isozyme activity profiles and perhaps to different effects on cardiovascular outcomes as well.
