ANALYSIS OF AEROSOLS IN WEST AFRICA: MODELLING AND RADIATIVE FORCING

We studied the aerosol properties in Cinzana and Ilorin in West Africa using data of aerosols’ properties over the period 2000–2015 from MODIS (Moderate resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer). There has been limited report on the comparison between this two West African Stations. The time series modelling, prediction of aerosol parameters and the estimation of aerosol radiative forcing (ARF) were focused on. Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) software was used for the modelling the monthly averaged measurements of aerosol optical depth at 550 nm (τ550), Angstrom exponent at 470 – 660 nm (α470-660), cloud fraction (Ncloud), fine mode fraction (FMF) and single scattering albedo at 470 nm (ωo) data over the two stations while the ARF values were calculated. The generated time series models are all good fit and the values are biased, both negatively and positively. The ARF of the two stations’ aerosol data shows value between 0.0 and -750.0 W/m2 for Ilorin and -10.0 to -200. 0 W/m2, which results mainly in cooling. Although there is a difference between ARF values in the two stations, both stations demonstrated clear seasonal variation with the rainy season having the least negative aerosol forcing. The results suggest that the aerosols are predominantly mineral dust, but those in Cinzana have more absorbing properties than those in Ilorin. Overall, the research shows that the modelled parameters can be utilized in lieu of the measured data and that the solar radiation received in this region has been attenuated at various degrees

Retrieval of aerosol single scattering albedo using joint satellite and surface visibility measurements

Aerosol single scattering albedo (SSA) measuring the ratio of scattering to extinction is a critical parameter in determining aerosol radiative effect. However, the retrieval of SSA from satellite platforms is limited because most existing passive satellite sensors such as Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) only provide the measurements of reflected solar radiation at the top of the atmosphere (TOA), which are only capable of retrieving aerosol optical depth (AOD) on the basis of assumed SSA. In this study, we develop a machine learning based algorithm to retrieve SSA using joint surface visibility and satellite radiation measurements. With ancillary information such as meteorological condition, surface visibility can be regarded as a proxy of column AOD. By combining MODIS measured TOA apparent reflectance with ground visibility as well as other auxiliary parameters, we retrieve SSA at over 6000 visibility stations worldwide. The validation results during the period from 2010 to 2019 show high consistency with AERONET retrieved SSA, with daily, monthly, and seasonal retrievals all exhibiting high correlations of 0.68, 0.96, and 0.97, respectively. Daily, monthly, and seasonal RMSE values are 0.044, 0.012, and 0.011, respectively. The mean absolute bias (MAB) of daily retrievals is 0.031 and 62% of the samples fall within the uncertainty interval of ±0.03. Monthly and seasonal MAB values decrease to below 0.01. Over 97% of the monthly and seasonal retrievals are within the error envelope of ±0.03. Our work generates a global aerosol SSA dataset with extensive coverage over land, which can be used for validating and improving climate models and the estimation of aerosol radiative forcing.

Aerosol characteristics over Indo-Gangetic Plain from ground-based AERONET and MERRA-2/CAMS model simulations

A comprehensive investigation of physical, optical, and chemical characteristics of columnar aerosols over two locations with distinct environmental settings in the Indo-Gangetic Plain (IGP) region, namely, Kanpur (urban and industrial area) and Gandhi College (rural area), is conducted using high-quality aerosol datasets obtained from ground-based Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET) observations during the recent five year period (2015–2019). This study utilizes all the crucial columnar aerosol parameters necessary for accurately estimating aerosol radiative forcing. Quantification of contribution by different aerosol species originating from natural and anthropogenic sources to the total aerosol optical depth (AOD) and single scattering albedo (SSA) is important to understand the specific mechanisms that influence the aerosol composition, thereby reducing the uncertainty in aerosol radiative forcing. For the first time, two highly spatially resolved models' (Modern-Era Retrospective Analysis for Research and Applications-2 (MERRA-2) and Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS)) simulated absorbing species-wise (black carbon (BC), dust, and brown carbon (BrC)) AOD, and absorption AOD (AAOD) are compared and contrasted against the AERONET observations over the IGP region in a systematic manner. MERRA-2 AODs are mostly lower, whereas CAMS AODs are consistently higher than the AERONET AODs. A comparison of collocated time and space observations with models clearly suggests that improvements in emission inventories on a seasonal scale are essential. MERRA-2 SSA is noted lower than the AERONET SSA during the winter season due to overestimation in BC AOD. During winter in >70% of MERRA-2 simulated SSA the difference is higher than ±0.03 (the uncertainty range of AERONET SSA) whereas during pre-monsoon and monsoon seasons >60% of MERRA-2 SSA lies within the uncertainty range of AERONET SSA. Both models show a gradient in AODDust decreasing from west to east in the IGP. However, observations do not often exhibit the gradient in dust, which is validated by air mass back trajectory analyses as air masses travel through different pathways to IGP and reverse the west to east gradient in AODDust. This quantitative and comparative collocated analysis of observed aerosol characteristics with models on a seasonal scale will enable a better estimation of aerosol radiative forcing, and can help improve aerosol processes and parameterizations in models.

Effect of urban submicron particles on single scattering albedo: the case study of high pollution event

In order to reduce uncertainties in estimation of aerosol radiative forcing, multi-parameter field observational studies are crucial. In this study, alterations of single scattering albedo (SSA), aerosol chemical composition, microphysical and optical characteristics (aerosol light scattering and absorption coefficients, absorption and scattering Ångström exponents, symmetry parameter, aging, size, aerosol liquid water content and other) were analyzed during residential heating season (from 10th October to 1st November 2014) in urban environment in Lithuania. In addition, a high concentration event was observed. High resolution and complex field measurements enabled evaluation of different aerosol parameters as drivers of SSA alterations under increased pollution levels. During the event, an evident input of not photochemically aged and small particles was observed together with increased levels of both black and brown carbon (BC and BrC, respectively). It was found that mainly PM1/BC ratio had the highest influence on SSA values. At the beginning of the event due to increased levels of light scattering particles, SSA remained unchanged (0.95). Meantime at the second half of the event scavenging of these particles and emissions of light absorbing primary aerosol resulted in SSA decreased to 0.86.

Origins of a Relatively Tight Lower Bound on Anthropogenic Aerosol Radiative Forcing from Bayesian Analysis of Historical Observations

AbstractA variety of empirical estimates have been published for the lower bounds on aerosol radiative forcing, clustered around −1.0 or −2.0 W m−2. The reasons for obtaining such different constraints are not well understood. In this study, we explore bounds on aerosol radiative forcing using a Bayesian model of aerosol forcing and Earth’s multi-time-scale temperature response to radiative forcing. We first demonstrate the ability of a simple aerosol model to emulate aerosol radiative forcing simulated by 10 general circulation models. A joint inference of climate sensitivity and effective aerosol forcing from historical surface temperatures is then made over 1850–2019. We obtain a maximum likelihood estimate of aerosol radiative forcing of −0.85 W m−2 (5%–95% credible interval from −1.3 to −0.50 W m−2) for 2010–19 relative to 1750 and an equilibrium climate sensitivity of 3.4°C (5%–95% credible interval from 1.8° to 6.1°C). The wide range of climate sensitivity reflects difficulty in empirically constraining long-term responses using historical temperatures, as noted elsewhere. A relatively tight bound on aerosol forcing is nonetheless obtained from the structure of temperature and aerosol precursor emissions and, particularly, from the rapid growth in emissions between 1950 and 1980. Obtaining a 5th percentile lower bound on aerosol forcing around −2.0 W m−2 requires prescribing internal climate variance that is a factor of 5 larger than the CMIP6 mean and assuming large, correlated errors in global temperature observations. Ocean heat uptake observations may further constrain aerosol radiative forcing but require a better understanding of the relationship between time-variable radiative feedbacks and radiative forcing.

Chemical composition and radiative forcing of atmospheric aerosols over the high-altitude Western Himalayas of India

Aerosol behavior over the Himalayas plays an important role in the regional climate of South Asia. Previous studies at high-altitude observatories have provided evidence of the impact of long-range transport of pollutants from the Indo-Gangetic Plain (IGP). However, little information exists for the valley areas in the high Himalayas where significant local anthropogenic emissions can act as additional sources of short-living climate forcers and pollutants. The valley areas host most economic activities based on agriculture, forestry, and pilgrimage during every summer season. We report here first measurements at a valley site at ~2600 m a.s.l. on the trek to the Gangotri glacier (Gaumukh), in the Western Himalayas, where local infrastructures for atmospheric measurements are absent. The study comprised short-term measurement of aerosols, chemical characterization, and estimation of aerosol radiative forcing (ARF) during the winter and summer periods (2015-2016). The particulate matter mass concentrations were observed to be higher than the permissible limit during the summer campaigns. We obtained clear evidence of the impact of local anthropogenic sources: particulate nitrate is associated with coarse aerosol particles, the black carbon (BC) mass fraction appears undiluted with respect to measurements performed in the lower Himalayas, and in winter, both BC and sulfate concentrations in the valley site are well above the background levels reported from literature studies for mountain peaks. Finally, high concentrations of trace metals such as copper point to anthropogenic activities, including combustion and agriculture. While most studies in the Himalayas have addressed pollution in the high Himalayas in terms of transport from IGP, our study provides clear evidence that local sources cannot be overlooked over the high-altitude Himalayas. The estimated direct clear-sky ARF was estimated to be in the range of -0.1 to +1.6 W m-2, with significant heating in the atmosphere over the high-altitude Himalayan study site. These results indicate the need to establish systematic aerosol monitoring activities in the high Himalayan valleys.

Parameterizing the Impact of Seawater Temperature and Irradiance on Dimethylsulfide (DMS) in the Great Barrier Reef and the Contribution of Coral Reefs to the Global Sulfur Cycle

AbstractBiogenic emissions of dimethylsulfide (DMS) are an important source of sulfur to the atmosphere, with implications for aerosol formation and cloud albedo over the ocean. Natural aerosol sources constitute the largest uncertainty in estimates of aerosol radiative forcing and climate and thus, an improved understanding of DMS sources is needed. Coral reefs are strong point sources of DMS; however, this coral source of biogenic sulfur is not explicitly included in climatologies or in model simulations. Consequently, the role of coral reefs in local and regional climate remains uncertain. We aim to improve the representation of tropical coral reefs in DMS databases by calculating a climatology of seawater DMS concentration (DMSw) and sea‐air flux in the Great Barrier Reef (GBR), Australia. DMSw is calculated from remotely sensed observations of sea surface temperature and photosynthetically active radiation using a multiple linear regression model derived from field observations of DMSw in the GBR. We estimate that coral reefs and lagoon waters in the GBR (∼347,000 km2) release 0.03–0.05 Tg yr−1 of DMS (0.02 Tg yr−1 of sulfur). Based on this estimate, global tropical coral reefs (∼600,000 km2) could emit 0.08 Tg yr−1 of DMS (0.04 Tg yr−1 of sulfur), with the potential to influence the local radiative balance.

Surprising similarities in model and observational aerosol radiative forcing estimates.

The radiative forcing from aerosols (particularly through their interaction with clouds) remains one of the most uncertain components of the human forcing of the climate. Observation-based studies have typically found a smaller aerosol effective radiative forcing than in model simulations and were given preferential weighting in the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Fifth Assessment Report (AR5). With their own sources of uncertainty, it is not clear that observation-based estimates are more reliable. Understanding the source of the model and observational differences is thus vital to reduce uncertainty in the impact of aerosols on the climate.These reported discrepancies arise from the different methods of separating the components of aerosol forcing used in model and observational studies. Applying the observational decomposition to global climate model (GCM) output, the two different lines of evidence are surprisingly similar, with a much better agreement on the magnitude of aerosol impacts on cloud properties. Cloud adjustments remain a significant source of uncertainty, particularly for ice clouds. However, they are consistent with the uncertainty from observation-based methods, with the liquid water path adjustment usually enhancing the Twomey effect by less than 50%. Depending on different sets of assumptions, this work suggests that model and observation-based estimates could be more equally weighted in future synthesis studies.

Spatial, seasonal, and altitudinal heterogeneity in single scattering albedo of aerosols over an urban and a remote site: Radiative implications

The simultaneous near surface measurements of aerosol scattering and absorption coefficients over different environments (Ahmedabad, urban and Gurushikhar, a high altitude remote site) in western India were conducted to estimate SSA and investigate the importance of SSA in aerosol radiative forcing. The surface SSA (0.79, 0.85) is lower than the column SSA (0.92, 0.95) as emission sources for black carbon aerosols (absorbing in nature) are abundant near the surface (Ahmedabad, Gurushikhar). The atmospheric warming over the urban region estimated using column SSA is a factor of 3 lower (~18 Wm−2) than that of the warming (~52 Wm−2) estimated utilising surface SSA. The significant difference in atmospheric warming arises due to the differences in the SSA as aerosol optical depth (a measure of column concentration of aerosols) is the same. Surface and column SSA are comparatively higher over the high altitude remote site as the abundance of absorbing aerosols is less over a non-source region. In addition, the differences between surface and column SSA are less (< 9%) resulting in comparable aerosol radiative forcing estimates. This study highlights the differences that can arise in aerosol radiative effects due to the differences in SSA as a function of altitude (surface vs. column) and environment (urban vs. remote), thereby providing regional bounds on aerosol radiative forcing which can further be used in climate assessment studies.

Investigation of Two Optical Methods for Aerosol‐Type Classification Extended to a Northern Indian Ocean Site

AbstractMethods for determining aerosol types in cases where chemical composition measurements are not available are useful for improved aerosol radiative forcing estimates. In this study, two aerosol characterization methods by Cazorla et al. (2013, https://doi.org/10.5194/acp-13-9337-2013; CA13) and Costabile et al. (2013, https://doi.org/10.5194/acp-13-2455-2013; CO13) using wavelength‐dependent particle absorption and scattering are used, to assess their applicability and examine their limitations. Long‐term ambient particle optical property and chemical composition (major inorganic ions and bulk carbon) measurements from the Maldives Climate Observatory Hanimaadhoo as well as concurrent air mass trajectories are utilized to test the classifications based on the determined absorption Ångström exponent, scattering Ångström exponent, and single scattering albedo. The resulting aerosol types from the CA13 method show a good qualitative agreement with the particle chemical composition and air mass origin. In general, the size differentiation using the scattering Ångström exponent works very well for both methods, while the composition identification depending mainly on the absorption Ångström exponent can result in aerosol misclassifications at Maldives Climate Observatory Hanimaadhoo. To broaden the applicability of the CA13 method, we suggest to include an underlying marine aerosol group in the classification scheme. The classification of the CO13 method is less clear, and its applicability is limited when it is extended to aerosols in this environment at ambient humidity.

Multi-satellite retrieval of single scattering albedo using the OMI–MODIS algorithm

Abstract. Single scattering albedo (SSA) represents a unique identification of aerosol type and can be a determinant factor in the estimation of aerosol radiative forcing. However, SSA retrievals are highly uncertain due to cloud contamination and aerosol composition. The recent improvement in the SSA retrieval algorithm has combined the superior cloud-masking technique of the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) and the higher sensitivity of the Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) to aerosol absorption. The combined OMI–MODIS algorithm has only been validated over a small spatial and temporal scale. The present study validates the algorithm over global oceans for the period from 2008 to 2012. The geographical heterogeneity in the aerosol type and concentration over the Atlantic Ocean, the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal was useful to delineate the effect of aerosol type on the retrieval algorithm. We also noted that OMI overestimated SSA when absorbing aerosols were present closer to the surface. We attribute this overestimation to data discontinuity in the aerosol height climatology derived from the Cloud-Aerosol Lidar and Infrared Pathfinder Satellite Observations (CALIPSO) satellite. OMI uses predefined aerosol heights over regions where CALIPSO climatology is not present, leading to the overestimation of SSA. The importance of aerosol height was also studied using the Santa Barbara DISORT Atmospheric Radiative Transfer (SBDART) model. The results from the joint retrievals were validated using cruise-based measurements. It was seen that OMI–MODIS SSA retrievals performed better than the OMI only retrieval over the Bay of Bengal during winter, when the aerosols are present closer to the surface. Discrepancy between satellite retrievals and cruise measurements was seen when elevated aerosols were present which might not have been detected by the cruise instruments.

Black carbon aerosol mass concentration, absorption and single scattering albedo from single and dual spot aethalometers: Radiative implications

Black carbon (BC) is a primary aerosol emitted directly into the atmosphere from incomplete combustion. It absorbs incoming solar radiation and outgoing terrestrial radiation, which has significant implications to aerosol radiative forcing. Aethalometer employs optical attenuation technique to measure real-time BC mass concentrations. BC mass concentration measured using a single spot aethalometer (AE31) can be significantly uncertain due to filter loading effect. A modified version of AE31, namely, a dual spot aethalometer (AE33), uses a real-time loading effect compensation algorithm and measures BC mass concentrations. BC mass concentrations measured using single and dual spot aethalometers over an urban location are analysed. BC mass concentration from AE33 is higher (11%) than BC measured by post processed loading effect compensated AE31 data. Daily averaged BC mass concentration measured by AE31 and AE33 shows a very good linear agreement (coefficient of determination (0.98), and a small zero offset (0.22)). Aerosol absorption coefficients show an average difference of 28.5% between the two aethalometers. Aerosol absorption coefficient is utilised with nephelometer measured aerosol scattering coefficients to compute single scattering albedo (SSA). SSA (550 nm) estimated from the AE33 is always higher (∼ 8%) than AE31. Estimates of aerosol radiative forcing show that when SSA changes from 0.65 to 0.70 over urban regions the atmospheric warming changes by 10%, while when SSA changes from 0.85 to 0.90 the atmospheric warming changes by 25%. This study highlights the non-linear relation between SSA and aerosol forcing, and reveals how crucial it is to determine single scattering albedo accurately in order to reduce the uncertainty in aerosol radiative forcing estimate.

Brown Carbon and Black Carbon in the Smoky Atmosphere during Boreal Forest Fires

We have investigated the variability of smoke aerosol absorbing ability with variations in the content of brown carbon (BrC) and black carbon (BC). Using monitoring data on radiative characteristics of smoke aerosol at AERONET stations and the spatial distribution of aerosol optical depth (AOD) obtained by the MODIS spectrometer (Terra satellite), we have detected large-scale smokes during boreal forest fires in Russia and Canada (1995–2012). The spatial distribution (50°–70° N, 95°–125° W) and temporal variability (at AERONET station Fort McMurray) of AOD during the smoking of a part of Canada in July 2012 have been analyzed. AOD probability distributions for July 14–18, 2012, and an estimate of aerosol radiative forcing of smoke aerosol at the upper boundary of the atmosphere have been obtained. We have proposed a technique for the diagnostics of BrC and BC in smoke aerosol particles from the spectral dependence of the imaginary part of the refractive index. At a wavelength of 440 nm, the contributions of BrC and BC to the smokeaerosol absorbing abitity can be comparable in magnitude. In many cases, the absorption spectra of smoke aerosol can be adequately approximated by either power or exponential functions. The presence of BrC in smoke-aerosol particles highly extends the variety of observed absorption spectra in a smoky atmosphere and spectral dependences of single scattering albedo. In the spectral range of 440–1020 nm, the radiative characteristics of smoke aerosol are largely contributed by its fine mode.

Creating Aerosol Types from CHemistry (CATCH): A New Algorithm to Extend the Link Between Remote Sensing and Models

AbstractCurrent remote sensing methods can identify aerosol types within an atmospheric column, presenting an opportunity to incrementally bridge the gap between remote sensing and models. Here a new algorithm was designed for Creating Aerosol Types from CHemistry (CATCH). CATCH‐derived aerosol types—dusty mix, maritime, urban, smoke, and fresh smoke—are based on first‐generation airborne High Spectral Resolution Lidar (HSRL‐1) retrievals during the Ship‐Aircraft Bio‐Optical Research (SABOR) campaign, July/August 2014. CATCH is designed to derive aerosol types from model output of chemical composition. CATCH‐derived aerosol types are determined by multivariate clustering of model‐calculated variables that have been trained using retrievals of aerosol types from HSRL‐1. CATCH‐derived aerosol types (with the exception of smoke) compare well with HSRL‐1 retrievals during SABOR with an average difference in aerosol optical depth (AOD) &lt;0.03. Data analysis shows that episodic free tropospheric transport of smoke is underpredicted by the Goddard Earth Observing System‐ with Chemistry (GEOS‐Chem) model. Spatial distributions of CATCH‐derived aerosol types for the North American model domain during July/August 2014 show that aerosol type‐specific AOD values occurred over representative locations: urban over areas with large population, maritime over oceans, smoke, and fresh smoke over typical biomass burning regions. This study demonstrates that model‐generated information on aerosol chemical composition can be translated into aerosol types analogous to those retrieved from remote sensing methods. In the future, spaceborne HSRL‐1 and CATCH can be used to gain insight into chemical composition of aerosol types, reducing uncertainties in estimates of aerosol radiative forcing.

Recent advances in understanding secondary organic aerosol: Implications for global climate forcing

AbstractAnthropogenic emissions and land use changes have modified atmospheric aerosol concentrations and size distributions over time. Understanding preindustrial conditions and changes in organic aerosol due to anthropogenic activities is important because these features (1) influence estimates of aerosol radiative forcing and (2) can confound estimates of the historical response of climate to increases in greenhouse gases. Secondary organic aerosol (SOA), formed in the atmosphere by oxidation of organic gases, represents a major fraction of global submicron‐sized atmospheric organic aerosol. Over the past decade, significant advances in understanding SOA properties and formation mechanisms have occurred through measurements, yet current climate models typically do not comprehensively include all important processes. This review summarizes some of the important developments during the past decade in understanding SOA formation. We highlight the importance of some processes that influence the growth of SOA particles to sizes relevant for clouds and radiative forcing, including formation of extremely low volatility organics in the gas phase, acid‐catalyzed multiphase chemistry of isoprene epoxydiols, particle‐phase oligomerization, and physical properties such as volatility and viscosity. Several SOA processes highlighted in this review are complex and interdependent and have nonlinear effects on the properties, formation, and evolution of SOA. Current global models neglect this complexity and nonlinearity and thus are less likely to accurately predict the climate forcing of SOA and project future climate sensitivity to greenhouse gases. Efforts are also needed to rank the most influential processes and nonlinear process‐related interactions, so that these processes can be accurately represented in atmospheric chemistry‐climate models.

Atmospheric aerosol radiative forcing over a semi-continental location Tripura in North-East India: Model results and ground observations.

Northeast India (NEI) is located within the boundary of the great Himalayas in the north and the Bay of Bengal (BoB) in the southwest, experiences the mixed influence of the westerly dust advection from the Indian desert, anthropogenic aerosols from the highly polluted Indo-Gangetic Plains (IGP) and marine aerosols from BoB. The present study deals with the estimation and characterization of aerosol radiative forcing over a semi-continental site Tripura, which is a strategic location in the western part of NEI having close proximity to the outflow of the IGP. Continuous long term measurements of aerosol black carbon (BC) mass concentrations and columnar aerosol optical depth (AOD) are used for the estimation of aerosol radiative forcing in each monthly time scale. The study revealed that the surface forcing due to aerosols was higher during both winter and pre-monsoon seasons, having comparable values of 32W/m2 and 33.45W/m2 respectively. The atmospheric forcing was also higher during these months due to increased columnar aerosol loadings (higher AOD ~0.71) shared by abundant BC concentrations (SSA ~0.7); while atmospheric forcing decreased in monsoon due to reduced magnitude of BC (SSA ~0.94 in July) as well as columnar AOD. The top of the atmosphere (TOA) forcing is positive in pre-monsoon and monsoon months with the highest positive value of 3.78W/m2 in June 2012. The results are discussed in light of seasonal source impact and transport pathways from adjacent regions.

Investigation of aerosol optical, physical, and radiative characteristics of a severe dust storm observed over UAE

Abstract This work presents a detailed study of the dynamical processes triggering the occurrence of the two heavy dust storms which occurred between 18 and 22 March 2012 over the Middle East. The dynamics of this event are related to the coupling of subtropical jet and polar jet over the Saudi Arabia region, resulting in massive dust storm generation and dust transport through Rub’ al Khali and the Persian Gulf to the UAE region. AOD and PM10 values showed a fourfold increase during the event reaching a maximum of 1.8 and 1653 μg/m3 respectively. The spatial extent of the dust storm is evident from high values of MODIS AOD (~ 1.5) and OMI aerosol index (4.5) covering the entire Middle East. The total attenuated backscatter at 550 nm from CALLIPSO showed the vertical extent of dust up to 8 km. In addition, surface temperature showed a decrease of almost 15 °C during the event signifying the intensity of the dust storm. Aerosol radiative forcing estimates during the dust storm showed a cooling at the surface and warming in the atmosphere, with a maximum forcing value reaching up to ~− 210 Wm− 2 (185 Wm− 2). Hence, it is evident from the present study that the dust layer caused an additional warming of ~ 150 Wm− 2 in the atmosphere over this region. The present event showcases the importance of dust storm induced aerosol optical and physical processes, and associated atmospheric dynamics over UAE as well as other affected regions.

Sensitivity estimations for cloud droplet formation in the vicinity of the high-alpine research station Jungfraujoch (3580 m a.s.l.)

Abstract. Aerosol radiative forcing estimates suffer from large uncertainties as a result of insufficient understanding of aerosol–cloud interactions. The main source of these uncertainties is dynamical processes such as turbulence and entrainment but also key aerosol parameters such as aerosol number concentration and size distribution, and to a much lesser extent, the composition. From June to August 2011 a Cloud and Aerosol Characterization Experiment (CLACE2011) was performed at the high-alpine research station Jungfraujoch (Switzerland, 3580 m a.s.l.) focusing on the activation of aerosol to form liquid-phase clouds (in the cloud base temperature range of −8 to 5 °C). With a box model the sensitivity of the effective peak supersaturation (SSpeak), an important parameter for cloud activation, to key aerosol and dynamical parameters was investigated. The updraft velocity, which defines the cooling rate of an air parcel, was found to have the greatest influence on SSpeak. Small-scale variations in the cooling rate with large amplitudes can significantly alter CCN activation. Thus, an accurate knowledge of the air parcel history is required to estimate SSpeak. The results show that the cloud base updraft velocities estimated from the horizontal wind measurements made at the Jungfraujoch can be divided by a factor of approximately 4 to get the updraft velocity required for the model to reproduce the observed SSpeak. The aerosol number concentration and hygroscopic properties were found to be less important than the aerosol size in determining SSpeak. Furthermore turbulence is found to have a maximum influence when SSpeak is between approximately 0.2 and 0.4 %. Simulating the small-scale fluctuations with several amplitudes, frequencies and phases, revealed that independently of the amplitude, the effect of the frequency on SSpeak shows a maximum at 0.46 Hz (median over all phases) and at higher frequencies, the maximum SSpeak decreases again.

Wave like signatures in aerosol optical depth and associated radiative impacts over the central Himalayan region

Doppler Lidar and Multi-Filter Rotating Shadowband Radiometer (MFRSR) observations are utilized to show wave like signatures in aerosol optical depth (AOD) during daytime boundary layer evolution over the Himalayan region. Fourier analysis depicted 60–80min periods dominant during afternoon hours, implying that observed modulations could be plausible reason for the AOD forenoon–afternoon asymmetry which was previously reported. Inclusion of wave amplitude in diurnal variation of aerosol radiative forcing estimates showed ~40% additional warming in the atmosphere relative to mean AOD. The present observations emphasize the importance of wave induced variations in AOD and radiation budget over the site.

Estimation of aerosol radiative forcing over an aged-background aerosol feature during advection and non-advection events using a ground-based data obtained from a Prede Skyradiometer observation

Estimation of aerosol radiative forcing (ARF) was performed using a radiative transfer model (Rstar6b) along with physical and optical parameters of aerosols obtained from sky radiometer observation over Indian Astronomical Observatory (IAO), Hanle, Ladakh, during 2008–2010 from dust, anthropogenic, and aged background observing conditions. ARF was estimated at the top of the atmosphere (TOA), in the atmosphere, and at the surface during the three observing conditions. During dust and anthropogenic events, average aerosol optical depth (AOD at 500nm) went up to 0.24 from the aged background observing condition 0.04. Such enhancement of AOD is associated by the combination of desert-dust and anthropogenic aerosols transported from distant sources as noticed from Cloud-Aerosol Lidar and Infrared Pathfinder Satellite Observations (CALIPSO). Such three types of aerosols are also identified from the observed properties of single scattering albedo (SSA), aerosol asymmetry (AS) parameter, and aerosol size distribution. The estimated ARFs at TOA, at the surface, and in atmosphere are −3.73, −6.82, and 3.40Wm−2, respectively during the dust advection period. On the contrary, the respective ARFs during the aged background observing condition are −1.50, −2.22, and 0.70Wm−2, respectively. A significant difference of spectral AOD is observed during dust, anthropogenic, and aged background observing conditions. Ångström exponent (AE) decreases from 1.05 in the aged background observing condition to 0.40 in the dust event. A significant difference of coarse–fine mode volume distribution is also observed between the dust and the anthropogenic cases. Further, the study reveals high aerosols induced during the dust and the anthropogenic episodes caused warming at atmosphere and cooling at surface which collectively may affect the local atmospheric circulation.
