Assessment of Critical Environmental Risk Zones Around Wetlands in Colombo, Sri Lanka, Using Satellite Remote Sensing and Multi-criteria Decision Tools

Colombo, Sri Lanka’s commercial capital, is recognized as one of the first 18 global sites that were awarded the Ramsar Wetland City accreditation, and is a prime example of the intersection between urbanization and wetland conservation. Thus, this study aims to conduct an environmental risk assessment that can provide insights into the changes in biophysical properties driven by urbanization over the 2000–2020 period. The study used Geographical Information Systems and a remote sensing approach to assess critical environmental risk zones around urban freshwater lakes in the Colombo district of Sri Lanka, including Thalangama, an environmental protection area experiencing sub-urbanization. Satellite data (2000–2020) were employed, and spectral indices, including NDVI, NDBI, NDWI, NDMI, RVI and LST, were calculated. Intersecting areas with multiple risk factors were determined, and distances from these zones to lakes were calculated to generate spatially explicit risk maps using inverse distance weighting. The building density has consistently increased from 2000 to 2020 in all three sites, with ‘very high’ density areas expanding notably. NDVI reveals a gradual increase in ‘very high’ categories until 2015. Plant-water stress analysis shows significant water stress in 2015, and water body areas have decreased after 2010 in all the sites. Multi-criteria assessment identifies critical environmental risk zones around urban lakes, indicating high vulnerability to environmental damage and degradation. Overall, the study emphasizes the importance of leveraging data and risk analysis to inform decision-making processes in environmental management. By doing so, policymakers can enhance the effectiveness of conservation measures and promote the long-term sustainability of natural resources.

Geographic Information System and Contamination Indices for Environmental Risk Assessment of Landfill Disposal Sites in Central Saudi Arabia

Landfills pollute air, soil, and surface and groundwater worldwide. The present work aims to assess the environmental risks of three landfills in southern Riyadh using GIS, soil quality guidelines, and contamination indices. GIS tools indicated an increase in the area of the landfill sites with time. The concentration of heavy metals (HMs) in the investigated landfills had the following descending order: Fe (11,532 mg/kg) ˃ Al (5405 mg/kg) ˃ Pb (561.7 mg/kg) ˃ Zn (356.8 mg/kg) ˃ Mn (165 mg/kg) ˃ Cr (74.8 mg/kg) ˃ Cu (42.7 mg/kg) ˃ Ni (22.4 mg/kg) ˃ V (21.8 mg/kg) ˃ As (5.16 mg/kg) ˃ Co (4.08 mg/kg). The highest values of Al, As, Co, Ni, Pb, V, and Zn were recorded from Al Kharj road landfill (RL3). However, the average values of all HMs were lower than those from most worldwide soils and backgrounds, except for Zn, Cu, Cr, and Pb. Results of enrichment factor and statistical analysis indicated deficiency to minimal enrichment and geogenic sources for Al, Co, Mn, and V, while those of As, Cr, Pb, Zn, and Cu showed EF ˃ 2, which might be indicative of anthropogenic activities, especially in RL3. Additionally, very high contamination and a high effects range—median were reported in individual samples, especially for Pb, As, and Zn, indicating frequent adverse effects for these HMs. The difference in contamination for the HMs in the studied landfill sites might be attributed to the difference in the magnitude of input for each metal into the landfill site and/or the difference in the removal rate of each metal from it.

Ignoring the food route underestimated human health risk from potentially toxic elements in agricultural environments of Ziyang, Shaanxi, China.

Staple food is a crucial exposure route for the human intake of potentially toxic elements (PTEs), but it has been neglected in previous human health risk (HHR) studies. Lack of attention to this issue will lead to an underestimation of HHR caused by PTEs. This study establishes a comprehensive regional identification method for health risk assessment (HRA), namely, soil-maize health risk assessment (SMHRA) and applies it to Ziyang, Shaanxi, which is a typical agricultural county. SMHRA considered the exposure pathway of staple food and utilized Monte Carlo simulation to enhance the accuracy of HRA for PTEs. Results indicated the PTE spatial heterogeneity in a soil-maize system. Introducing staple food exposure pathway would increase HHR values and probabilities 1.57-2.80 and 1.53-5.63 times than that when food route was not considered. Overall, the HHR caused by a single PTE was low, which relatively safe. The introduction of food pathway contributed to accurate estimate the HHR of As and Ni, and the risk probabilities ranged from 0.04% to 12.46%. Few areas had high levels of Ni, which pose health risks: approximately 1.8% for children and higher than 0.5% for adults. Both As and Ni had the highest contribution to HHR among all PTEs, with 33.84%-41.56% TNCR caused by As, and 54.73%-56.90% TCR created by Ni, respectively. For human health risk routes, the staple food exhibited the highest contribution to HHR among all exposure routes, with TNCR of 36.15%-56.73% and the TCR of 44.96%-64.28%. Our research imply that dietary intake of PETs must be considered in the human health risk assessment in agricultural environment, which offers the foundation for subsequent environmental risk prevention and control.

Is environmental risk assessment possible with the alternatives to acute fish toxicity test? Case study with pharmaceuticals

BackgroundAcute fish toxicity test (AFT) is one of the cornerstones of environmental risk assessment (ERA) of chemicals for the aquatic environment. Despite many efforts to find an alternative able to fully replace the test, there is still lasting pressure from stakeholders for AFT results. ResultsHere, we present the results of a case study with eight pharmaceuticals from various pharmaceutical groups with different levels of expected toxicity to fish. Selected compounds were tested in two validated alternative tests—fish embryo toxicity test with zebrafish (Danio rerio) (zFET) and in vitro RTgill-W1 assay according to their corresponding OECD guidelines TG 236 and TG 249, respectively. Data for AFT were collected from PubMed and ECOTOX knowledgebase databases, and acute toxicity to fish was further predicted in silico by the ECOSAR program. Predicted environmental risks (risk quotients, RQ, calculated using the exposure data from NORMAN) from both zFET and RTgill-W1 well correlated with the average RQs based on AFT LC50s. The strongest and most significant correlation was observed while comparing the AFT results with the median of combined alternative methods (zFET, RTgill-W1, ECOSAR).ConclusionsThis proposed approach combining experimental data with modeling could serve as a reliable tool for predictions of environmental risks promoting the 3R alternatives to acute fish toxicity testing.

Visual aptasensor based on PtNPs/g-C3N4 and DNase I for the field detection of acetamiprid.

A visual aptasensor based on the combination of graphitic carbon nitride loaded with platinum nanoparticles (PtNPs/g-C3N4) and deoxyribonuclease I (DNase I) was developed for detecting acetamiprid. The prepared PtNPs/g-C3N4 exhibited excellent peroxidase (POD)-like activity, demonstrating the capacity to oxidize the colourless o-phenylenediamine (OPD) to produce the coloured product diaminophenazine (DAP) in the presence of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). The DNA aptamer of acetamiprid can adsorb onto the surface of PtNPs/g-C3N4, thereby inhibiting its POD activity. The binding of acetamiprid to its aptamer results in the aptamer desorbing from the surface of PtNPs/g-C3N4 and subsequent digestion by DNase I. Ascribed to the synergistic effect of these factors, the aptasensor can achieve the rapid on-site detection of acetamiprid based on the acetamiprid-induced the colour change of the solution just with the smartphone. Furthermore, due to the remarkable fluorescence signal of DAP at 570nm, the aptasensor under fluorescence mode enables highly sensitive and quantitative detection of acetamiprid with a linear range of 1 ng/mL to 4µg/mL and a detection limit as low as 0.31 ng/mL.Theaptasensor has successfully realized the detection of acetamiprid in river water and cucumber samples, offering a novel perspective for the rapid assessment of environmental pollution and food safety risks associated with acetamiprid residues.

Integrating environmental, ecological and human health risk assessments for heavy metals in tropical ultramafic soils

Ultramafic soils are a natural source of metals such as Ni, Co and Cr that can pose ecosystem and human risks. Here, we assessed the environmental, ecological, and human health (carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic) risks from exposure to ultramafic soils through an integrated approach using petrographic and soil mineralogical assessments together with total, available, bioaccessible, and soil fractions analyses of Ni, Co and Cr in ultramafic soils from Brazil. The metal concentrations were similar or up to 5-fold higher for Ni than other studies worldwide in ultramafic soils. Soil sequential extraction showed Co and Ni predominantly bound to Fe and Mn oxides, while Cr was mostly in residual fractions. Medium environmental risks were found for Ni (RAC = 13.0), but no environmental risks were associated with Co and Cr in soils. Ecological risks were high (PERI = 522.8) and significantly high (PERI = 1759.9). Low metal bioaccessibility led to acceptable carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks for all routes of human exposure to soil, but consuming vegetables grown in these soils posed unacceptable cancer risks (> 10−3). Our results reinforce the need to monitor ultramafic areas regarding the mobility and availability of metals in the soil to ensure food safety and human health.

Bioaccumulation and tissue distribution of pharmaceuticals and their transformation products in fish along the pollution gradients of a wastewater-impacted river

A field study on the occurrence and distribution of forty-three pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs) in water and fish samples from anthropogenically impacted section of the Sava River (Croatia) was performed to estimate the importance of bioaccumulation for the environmental risk assessment of PhACs. The study was performed using a highly specific LC-MS/MS method, tailored to include the most prominent PhACs from different therapeutic categories as well as their major metabolites and/or transformation products (TPs). The results revealed a widespread occurrence of PhAC residues both in water and fish samples with a large spatial variability reflecting the distance from the dominant wastewater discharges. The most prominent PhAC categories in less polluted upstream part of the river were common psychostimulants caffeine and cotinine, therapeutic opioids and cardiovascular drugs, while in the river section affected by the local municipal and industrial wastewater inputs, antibiotic drugs became clearly predominant, especially in fish tissue samples. The apparent bioconcentration factors (BCFs) of investigated PhACs varied over several orders of magnitude, from 0.02 ± 0.01 Lkg−1 for O-desmethyl tramadol in fish muscle to 784 ± 260 Lkg−1 for terbinafine in fish liver, indicating rather large differences in their bioconcentration potential and affinity to different tissues, with the tissue-specific BCFs increasing in the following order: muscle < gills < gonads < heart < liver < kidneys. The bioconcentration potential of most of the PhACs included in this study was only low to moderate however moderately high BCFs of certain PhACs (e.g. sertraline, terbinafine, loratadine, diazepam and azithromycin) in some tissues should be taken into consideration when assessing their potential environmental risks. Moreover, it was shown that BCFs could be strongly affected by biotransformation in fish. Risk prioritization based on risk quotient (RQ) and ToxPi index, revealed antibiotics, in particular azithromycin, and therapeutic psychoactive substances as the most hazardous pharmaceutical contaminants in the Sava River.

The impact of repeated pyrethroid pulses on aquatic communities

Pesticides are considered to be one of the main causes of the decline in macroinvertebrate biodiversity in small streams. In particular, pyrethroids are detected in agricultural surface waters worldwide and pose a high risk to aquatic invertebrates. Due to their knock-down effect, even short pyrethroid exposure pulses can have significant short- and long-term effects on macroinvertebrate communities. Therefore, it is necessary to consider more realistic exposure scenarios for the environmental risk assessment of pyrethroids and, consequently, to obtain more realistic effect data by using multi-stressor test systems.In an experimental setup with artificial indoor streams (AIS), four pyrethroid pulses simulated the exposure scenario of heavy rainfall events. Effects of these 12 h-exposures at different concentrations of deltamethrin (0.64 ng/L, 4 ng/L, 16 ng/L, 64 ng/L) with intervening recovery periods of six days were assessed on an aquatic community consisting of Gammarus pulex, Ephemera danica, Lumbriculus variegatus and Potamopyrgus antipodarum with various lethal and sub-lethal endpoints.The mortality rate of G. pulex significantly increased with increasing deltamethrin concentrations, whereas the mean number of offspring significantly decreased (NOECoffspring: 16 ng/L, LOECoffspring: 64 ng/L). The biomass of L. variegatus decreased with increasing deltamethrin concentrations (NOECdry weight: 16 ng/L, LOECdry weight: 64 ng/L).The findings of this study clearly demonstrate that 12 h-deltamethrin pulses at environmentally relevant concentrations adversely affect an aquatic community. Based on the results of this study a RAC value of 5.33 ng/L is assumed, which is below the concentrations measured in rivers of up to 58.8 ng/L. Unacceptable effects on the entire freshwater environment can therefore not be ruled out. The experimental AIS approach is a useful tool for assessing the effects of repeated pulse exposures that occur during surface runoff events.

Towards realism in hazard assessment of plastic and rubber leachates – Methodological considerations

While plastic chemicals are key drivers of observed effects to aquatic species, there remains a lack of standardized and fit-for-purpose approaches for experimentally deconvoluting the effects of plastic chemicals from particle effects. This study investigated differences in chemical composition determined using two different organic solvents for extractions (dichloromethane-ethyl acetate, methanol) and by thermal desorption applied to 51 thermoplastic and elastomer products. The composition of natural water leachates of four select elastomers was also investigated. The number of chemical features in each material varied according to the extraction method, with solvent extracts exhibiting the most chemicals, and only 19 compounds commonly identified by all three methods. The number of chemical features in leachates was generally similar to the corresponding chemical extracts, but strong differences in relative composition were detected. While turbulence had minimal impact on leachate composition, particle loading strongly influenced leachate composition, temperature and salinity influenced the leachate concentration for some chemicals, and leaching time depended upon chemical mobility. Leachate composition cannot be readily predicted from particle characterization and multiple parameters are drivers of compositional variance in aquatic leachates. Recommendations for performing leaching studies that are relevant for hazard characterization in a realistic aquatic environment risk assessment scenario are suggested, with a particular focus on particle loading.

Introducing a prediction method for the photodegradation of p-cresol, a phenolic contaminant of emerging concern, in wastewater effluent

Despite extensive efforts to understand the photodegradation of phenolic contaminants of emerging concern (PhCECs) in aquatic systems, prediction methods, especially in waters containing effluent organic matter (EfOM), remain underdeveloped. This study introduces a prediction method for p-cresol, a representative PhCECs, based on correlations between EfOM optical parameters and p-cresol kinetic parameters. We examined p-cresol photodegradation in various EfOM samples, characterized by their optical properties, and used the reaction rate coefficient between EfOM and p-cresol, α3EfOM⁎, to quantify and predict p-cresol degradation in different wastewater effluent samples. Results showed significant correlations between p-cresol's photodegradation rate constant (0.144 to 0.441 h−1) and EfOM characteristics, with α3EfOM⁎ values ranging from 4 × 1011 to 10 × 1011 M−1 s−1. The method was validated with p-cresol at concentrations ranging from 25 to 100 μM and multiple EfOM samples. The method's applicability was further evaluated using propranolol, a pharmaceutical contaminant of emerging concern, demonstrating its versatility for predicting the degradation behavior of other contaminants in different wastewater samples. The method accurately predicted p-cresol and propranolol degradation across diverse wastewater samples, suggesting its potential for expansion to other classes of contaminants, aiding in water quality management, improving wastewater treatment processes, and enhancing environmental risk assessments.

Toxicological and environmental risks of enalapril and their possible transformation products generated under phototransformation reactions

Pharmaceutical active compounds (PACs) in the concentration range of hundreds of ng/L to μg/L have been identified in urban surface water, groundwater, and agricultural land where they cause various health risks. These pollutants are classified as emerging and cannot be efficiently removed by conventional wastewater treatment processes. The use of nano-enabled photocatalysts in the removal of pharmaceuticals in aquatic systems has recently received research attention owing to their enhanced properties and effectiveness. In the current study, toxicological and environmental risks of enalapril (ENL) and their possible transformation products (TPs) generated under phototransformation processes (e.g., photolysis and photocatalysis reactions) were assessed. In photolysis reaction, removal of ENL was incomplete (< 16%), while mineralization degree was negligible. In contrast, total removal of ENL was achieved through the photocatalytic process and its maximum mineralization ratio was 66% by using natural radiation. Proposed transformation pathways during the phototransformation of ENL include hydroxylation and fragmentation reactions generating transformation products (TPs) such as hydroxylated TPs (m/z 393) and enalaprilat (m/z 349). Potential environmental risks for aquatic organisms were not observed in the concentrations of both ENL and enalaprilat contained in surface water. However, the acute and chronic toxicities prediction of TPs such as m/z 409, 363, and 345 showed toxic effects on aquatic organisms. Thus, more studies regarding TPs monitoring for both ENL and PhACs with highest occurrence worldwide are necessary for the creation of a database of the concentrations contained in surface water and groundwater for the assessment of the potential environmental risk for aquatic organisms.

An Adverse Outcome Pathway Approach Linking Retinoid Signaling Disruption to Teratogenicity and Population-Level Outcomes

Recent research efforts in endocrine disruption have focused on evaluating non-EATS (estrogen, androgen, thyroid, and steroidogenesis) pathways. Retinoid signaling disruption is noteworthy because of its teratogenic effects and environmental relevance. However, current environmental risk assessments are limited in their ability to evaluate impacts on individuals and populations. This study characterizes an Adverse Outcome Pathway (AOP) network linking retinoid signaling disruption to teratogenicity and survival in zebrafish. We identified Retinoic Acid Receptor (RAR) overactivation as the molecular initiating event leading to key events including craniofacial (CFM) and tail (TM) malformations, posterior swim bladder (SB) non-inflation, impaired swimming performance, and reduced feeding, ultimately resulting in decreased survival. Our study (1) determines critical sensitivity windows for CFM, posterior SB non-inflation, and TM, (2) provides quantitative measurements for CFM and TM, and (3) defines impacts on higher biological levels including food ingestion, swimming, and survival. Results show that all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA) induces strong teratogenic effects with sensitivity windows between 4-48 hours post fertilization (hpf) for CFM, TM, and posterior SB non-inflation. TM is the most sensitive indicator, with EC50 of 0.2 - 0.26 µg/L across exposure windows 4-48, 4-72, 4-96, and 4-120 hpf. Besides inducing known malformations, ATRA impaired posterior SB inflation with EC50 of 1 - 1.21 µg/L across the same exposure windows. ATRA exposure (1 µg/L) resulted in 50% food ingestion inhibition at 7 days post fertilization (dpf) and 10% survival at 14 dpf. This study provides a regulatory-relevant framework linking developmental effects to population outcomes, highlighting ecological risks and needs for improved risk assessments.

Temporal dynamic of soil microbial communities and antibiotic resistance markers exposed to increasing concentrations of sulfamethoxazole

The reuse of treated wastewater (TWW) for irrigation is widely applied to alleviate pressure on freshwater resources. However, TWW contains antibiotics that once in soils, can exert selective pressure, promoting the emergence and spread of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in the environment. Current environmental risk assessments for antibiotic residues rely on indicators such as Predicted No Effect Concentrations (PNECs), usually determined in liquid media. These PNECs aim to predict antibiotic concentrations that may promote resistance in the environment. Given the complexity of soil matrices, few studies have established PNEC values for soil, which likely differ significantly from aquatic environments.To address this gap, we developed a simplified experimental model using soil microcosms irrigated with TWW and the antibiotic sulfamethoxazole (SMX) to estimate threshold concentrations favouring resistance transfer or/and emergence within the soil microbiome. We identified SMX concentrations between 0.01 and 0.1 mg/kgdry soil that likely increased the abundance of sulfonamide resistance genes in soil. A time window of 1 to 7 days post-exposure showed a temporary rise in sul1 and intl1 gene abundance (over 1 log/soil 16S rDNA), the appearance of SMX transformation products, and an increase in some Rhodocyclaceae. After 1.5 months of incubation and complete SMX transformation, the relative abundance of sul1 and intl1 remained about 0.5 log higher than in SMX-free controls and soils with SMX levels below 0.1 mg/kg dry soil. A persistent transformation product, 4-N-glucuronide-SMX, was also observed.Here, the estimated PNEC for SMX in soil, between 0.01 and 0.1 mg/kg, exceeds typical SMX concentrations found in soils exposed to TWW. This may suggest low impact on resistance selection for this compound in the context of TWW exposure. However further studies on other soils, water, and antibiotics need to be conducted to expand our knowledge on soil PNECs.

ENVIRONMENTAL RISK ASSESSMENT OF TRANSPORTATION INFRASTRUCTURE DEVELOPMENT USING GIS IN LAGOS STATE

Transportation infrastructure development poses significant environmental risks, including habitat disruption, air and water pollution, and climate change. This study develops a GIS-based framework for ecological risk assessment of transportation infrastructure development. This research identifies high-risk areas and prioritizes mitigation measures by integrating spatial analysis, multi-criteria decision analysis, and expert consultations. The GIS-based approach evaluates environmental sensitivity, proximity to ecosystems, and potential hazards. Results provide valuable insights for sustainable transportation planning, policy-making, and ecological management. This study explored its application in solving Environmental Risk Assessment of Transportation Infrastructure Development GIS application in environmental Risk Assessment monitoring has mainly been divided into three aspects: water, soil, and atmosphere. Based on ArcGIS 10.1 software and ArcGIS 9.3.1 version, GIS has been applied in Transportation system monitoring and soil heavy metal concentration monitoring, respectively. A major function of planners is to promote the best use of a community's land and resources for different construction projects; especially critical are infrastructure projects on which economic development relies. Transportation projects typically involve both environmental and economic issues facing a community as it grows and changes. Considerations of sustainability, as well as the widespread use of collaborative planning, design, and construction, require tools that facilitate long-term impact analysis and easy communication among built-environment professionals. Environmental impact assessment (EIA) is instrumental in studying transportation project impacts, but it is a time-consuming process because of the large number of dependent and independent variables involved. A vulnerability grade map and road distribution map were produced, providing an overall vulnerability score for each of the three planning alternatives considered. A road alignment was indicated as the preferred corridor, which was further recommended for a project development and environmental (PD&amp;E) study.

Effects of single or combined exposure to tralopyril and ocean acidification on energy metabolism response and sex development in Pacific oysters (Crassostrea gigas)

The combined effects of the novel antifouling biocide tralopyril (TP) nitrile and ocean acidification (OA) on marine organisms are still not well understood, despite the increasing attention given to the toxic effects of emerging pollutants and OA on marine organisms in recent years. In this study, Crassostrea gigas (C. gigas) was exposed to TP, OA, and a combination of TP and OA for 21 days with a 14-day depuration. This study investigated the inter-tissue variability in energy metabolism responses and the impacts on gonadal development in C. gigas under both single and combined exposures to TP and OA. The results indicate that TP exposure and OA resulted in up-regulation of energy metabolism genes in the C. gigas, with tissues exhibiting enhanced aerobic metabolism. Furthermore, OA influences the sex determination of C. gigas, promoting the development of female individuals. Moreover, following depuration, C. gigas is able to restore normal energy metabolism and sexual development through the accumulation of suitable energy reserves. This study provides a valuable reference for the environmental and ecological risk assessment of TP, addressing the research gap in understanding the combined toxicity of TP and OA on aquatic organisms.

Low pharmaceutical pollution of epibenthic organisms from Admiralty Bay, Antarctica (King George Island, South Shetland Islands)

The presence of medicinal products has been reported in the Antarctic marine environment but still little is known about the bioaccumulation of these compounds. This study was set up to detect and quantify pharmaceutical residues in benthic biota from Admiralty Bay, King George Island (South Shetland Islands, Antarctica). Pharmaceuticals and stimulants were analysed using LC-MS/MS in dominant epibenthic macroorganisms that were collected at eight nearshore sublittoral sites (water depth 3–30 m) by a SCUBA diving team during austral summer (February 2023). Out of 22 analytes, only the stimulant caffeine (CAF) and the antiepileptic carbamazepine (CBZ) have been identified in the macrobenthic algae and invertebrates indicating a relatively low contamination level of the bay. The analytes were detected predominantly in the northern part of the bay (Mackellar Inlet and Martel Inlet) which reflects likely their elevated environmental concentrations in this area and suggests that local research stations represent the main source of pharmaceutical contamination. Irrespective of the sampling site, both compounds were found almost exclusively in brown and red macroalgae highlighting their potential for uptake and accumulation of CAF and CBZ. This study provided the first evidence of the presence of medicinal substances in the Antarctic macrobenthic organisms and can serve as a baseline for environmental risk assessment.

Intraspecific diversity is critical to population-level risk assessments

Environmental risk assessment (ERA) is critical for protecting life by predicting population responses to contaminants. However, routine toxicity testing often examines only one genotype from surrogate species, potentially leading to inaccurate risk assessments, as natural populations typically consist of genetically diverse individuals. To evaluate the importance of intraspecific variation in translating toxicity testing to natural populations, we quantified the magnitude of phenotypic variation between 20 Daphnia magna clones exposed to two levels of microcystins, a cosmopolitan cyanobacterial toxin. We observed significant genetic variation in survival, growth, and reproduction, which increased under microcystins exposure. Simulations of survival showed that using a single genotype for toxicity tolerance estimates on average failed to produce accurate predictions within the 95% confidence interval over half of the time. Whole genome sequencing of the 20 clones tested for correlations between toxicological responses and genomic divergence, including candidate loci from prior gene expression studies. We found no overall correlations, indicating that clonal variation, rather than variation at candidate genes, predicts population-level responses to toxins. These results highlight the importance of incorporating broad intraspecific genetic variation, without focusing specifically on variation in candidate genes, into ERAs to more reliably predict how local populations will respond to contaminants.

Risk of rainfall caused leaching from bio-composite material based building façades into the aquatic environment

The increasing focus on sustainability and circularity is driving the global production of environmentally friendly products. The Netherlands started producing new bio-composite materials which are created by reclaiming resources from various sectors of the water industry. These materials can be used for a variety of applications including façade elements in buildings. However, their potential environmental impact, particularly with regard to leaching of potentially harmful substances into surface water, necessitates further evaluation. To address this issue, a systematic environmental risk assessment methodology combined with novel experimental data is presented here. To collect this data, façade panels made of two different bio-composite materials were first subjected to a series of laboratory tests, including analysis in both new and weathered forms, the latter subject to a cyclic UV radiation and high humidity, in order to simulate the effects of aging. Leaching tests were then conducted to determine the potential release of specific chemical substances such as heavy metals and resin compounds, under two different rainfall conditions (every day and more extreme). The data generated this way was used to perform the risk assessment using the existing European ERA framework. The results obtained reveal different leaching behaviour of the new and weathered samples, as well as between the two analysed bio-composite materials, depending on the rain intensity. To overcome the uncertainties caused by the limited input data, a sensitivity analysis was carried out whereby leaching concentrations and rainfall intensities were varied and their influence on the environmental risk was assessed. The results obtained demonstrated that, despite some variability, both materials appear safe to use, i.e., with estimated risks below the established safety threshold. While these findings provide a preliminary indication, they are based on laboratory conditions and assumptions hence further field studies are recommended to obtain more definitive conclusions.
