Historical analysis of entrepreneurial activity in the second half of the 19th to the early 20th century (using the example of Eastern Kazakhstan)

This research analyzes and studies entrepreneurial activities in the Zaysan region during the second half of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. Nestled in East Kazakhstan, Zaysan City serves as a treasure trove of historical insights into entrepreneurial pursuits. Throughout this epoch, notable trade hubs burgeoned within urban centers and expansive settlements like Semey, Ust-Kamenogorsk, Zaysan, and Kokpekti, all situated within the East Kazakhstan Region. This proliferation of commerce was emblematic of the region's stature as a pivotal nexus of trade and economic activity during this period. The study includes an analysis of factors that influenced the development of entrepreneurship in Zaysan, such as the city's geographical location, the presence of waterways, trade routes, and connections with other regions. Additionally, the research examines the impact of political and socio-economic conditions, including demographic changes and shifts in the region's ethnic composition, on the development of entrepreneurship. Moreover, the research analyzes the role of entrepreneurs and entrepreneurship in Zaysan's economic life. It highlights their contributions to the development of the city and the region as a whole. The study gives special attention to the philanthropic activities of entrepreneurs in areas such as education and cultural advancement, among others.

This study analyzes the integration of Resource-Based View (RBV), Experiential Learning Theory (ELT), and Entrepreneurship Education Models (EEMs) to create an entrepreneurial attitude and boost student career preparation. The proposed triangulated model provides a comprehensive approach to promoting entrepreneurial mindsets and work-based learning opportunities. Using the Resource-Based View (RBV), students can identify and take advantage of their distinct resources, which cultivates a forward-thinking attitude essential for success in the contemporary professional environment. The field of ELT highlights the crucial impact of experiential learning on education, facilitating the creation of job-related learning opportunities that foster practical skills and knowledge necessary for entrepreneurial pursuits. Furthermore, EEMs offer a holistic viewpoint, recognizing the significance of people’s capacities and the surrounding context in attaining entrepreneurial achievement. This integrated strategy caters to the requirement of specialized programs that thoroughly equip students for the swiftly evolving job market, providing valuable insights for educators and institutions.

The Lottery and the Middle Class

Abstract I focus on middle-class engagement with lotteries and numerical games of chance, to understand the symbolic boundary-making processes in the Turkish context. Based on 18 months of ethnographic research (2021–2022) with people who regularly participate in state-regulated games of chance in Istanbul, I argue that the middle class(es) have diversified subjectivities with elusive moral boundary-making and differentiated views on risk-taking that transcend the classic distinction between the old middle class and the new middle class. The uncertain socioeconomic situation has rendered my participants precariat and made them move beyond the illusionary boundaries of a perceived stability or ‘in-betweenness’ of the middle class. To mitigate future uncertainty, they engage in speculative ventures, such as games of chance and entrepreneurial pursuits and act beyond what has been considered safe, rational, or secure economic activities.

Digital Dynamics: Nurturing Entrepreneurial Spirits in Accounting Students

This research delves into the entrepreneurial aspirations of accounting students, exploring the impact of family environment, self-efficacy, and income expectations, with e-commerce as a moderating factor. Utilizing a sample of 66 respondents from Universitas Muhammadiyah Sidoarjo, data was gathered through questionnaires and processed using SmartPLS. The findings reveal significant positive influences: family environment, self-efficacy, and income expectations all contribute to entrepreneurial interest. Interestingly, e-commerce weakens the influence of family environment while bolstering the effect of self-efficacy on entrepreneurial intentions. Additionally, it diminishes the impact of income expectations on students' entrepreneurial pursuits. These insights provide crucial understanding for educators and policymakers, emphasizing the intricate interplay of personal, familial, and digital factors in shaping the entrepreneurial mindset among future accountants.Highlights :

Entrepreneurial education and intention: fear of failure, self-efficacy and gender

PurposeThis research adopts the social cognitive career theory (SCCT) and a moderated mediation model to investigate the moderating impacts of entrepreneurial fear of failure (FOF) and gender on the direct and mediation relationships between entrepreneurial education (EE), entrepreneurial self-efficacy (ESE) and entrepreneurial intention (EI).Design/methodology/approachThe authors utilized a three-phase random sampling to compile a dataset from 1,890 graduate students from nine universities and higher education institutions in Vietnam. Cronbach's alpha and confirmatory factor analysis results showed that the key study variables were reliable and valid. Harman's single-factor method and other tests of analysis assumptions ruled out common method bias and other confounding factors. The authors utilized the PROCESS macro to test a hypothesized moderated mediation model that included direct, indirect and conditional indirect effects.FindingsThe findings yield that ESE partially and positively mediates the relation between EE and EI. FOF was found to negatively moderate the impacts of EE on ESE and EI, and the direct effect of ESE on EI among females is stronger than among males. More importantly, the mediation influence of FOF on the linkage between EE and EI becomes weaker when the level of FOF is high, yet this mediation relationship among females is higher than among males at all levels of FOF.Practical implicationsThe results of this research are valuable for educators, policymakers and practitioners so that they may inspire individuals' entrepreneurial pursuits, especially those of female entrepreneurs.Originality/valueThis study significantly contributes to the entrepreneurship and gender literature by applying the SCCT to elucidate the moderated mediation impacts of FOF, ESE and gender on the relationship between EE and EI.

THE INFLUENCE OF ENTREPRENEURSHIP KNOWLEDGE AND FAMILY ENVIRONMENT ON ENTREPRENEURIAL INTEREST OF 11TH GRADE STUDENTS AT SMK NEGERI 10 JAKARTA

This study aimed to examine the influence of Entrepreneurship Knowledge and Family Environment on Interest in Entrepreneurship among Class XI students at SMKN 10 Jakarta. The research utilized a survey method with a quantitative approach to collect data from a population of 246 students. A probability sampling technique with the Slovin formula was applied, resulting in a sample of 154 students. Data analysis was performed using validation and reliability tests with IBM SPSS software version 24. The study findings revealed significant results. Firstly, a positive and significant correlation was found between Entrepreneurship Knowledge and Interest in Entrepreneurship, indicating that higher levels of knowledge in entrepreneurship positively impact students' interest in entrepreneurial activities. Secondly, the Family Environment demonstrated a positive and significant influence on Interest in Entrepreneurship, suggesting that a supportive and encouraging family environment contributes to students' inclination towards entrepreneurship. Lastly, the combined effect of Entrepreneurship Knowledge and Family Environment showed a significant influence on Interest in Entrepreneurship, emphasizing the importance of both factors in fostering students' interest in entrepreneurial pursuits. These results provide valuable insights for educators and policymakers to design effective strategies that promote entrepreneurship among students. Encouraging the acquisition of entrepreneurship knowledge and fostering a supportive family environment may significantly enhance students' interest and readiness to engage in entrepreneurial ventures.

The various living arrangement options for college students who aspire to become entrepreneurs. It emphasizes the importance of creating an environment conducive to entrepreneurial pursuits and outlines potential solutions after graduations. This study aims to examine the effect of Students Who Live with their Parents and Students Who Live Separately with their Parents on Entrepreneurial Intention through Entrepreneurial Characteristics as an intervening variable. The population in this study were 100 students of the Faculty of Economics and Business, University of Sam Ratulangi Manado, in several study program from the Management, Accounting, and Development Economics. The sampling technique used in this study was Purposive Sampling while the data analysis used in this study was Path Analysis. The classic assumption test used in this study is the Normality Test, Multicollinearity Test and Heteroscedasticity Test. The results of this study prove that Students Who Live with Their Parents and Students Who Live Separate with their Parents has no positive influence on Entrepreneurial Intention, Students Who Live with their Parents has no positive influence on Entrepreneurial Characteristics while Students Who Live Separate with their Parents have positive influence on Entrepreneurial Characteristics, and Entrepreneurial Characteristics have a positive influence on Entrepreneurial Intention.  This research aimed to enhance the communication skills of studentpreneurs in the WEBS unit at Universitas Airlangga. Through a community engagement activity aligned with SDGs 4 and 8, a training program focused on public speaking skills was conducted. The two-day training in May 2023 resulted in notable improvements in participants' knowledge and skills. They displayed increased confidence, effective body language, eye contact, and improved delivery, all crucial for their entrepreneurial pursuits. The training received positive feedback, with high engagement and enthusiasm from participants and speakers. Pre- and post-test assessments revealed enhanced understanding of communication elements, cultural factors, and psychological aspects related to public speaking. Participants also demonstrated growth in public speaking abilities, showcasing greater boldness, facial expressions, vocal modulation, and originality in presenting ideas. The findings underscore the significance of practical application and continuous development of communication skills. UNLEASHING THE POWER OF INNOVATION: THE TRANSFORMATIVE ROLE OF SMES IN EU

This article explores the significant efforts made by the European Union (EU) to support small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) through a range of initiatives, policies, and programs, such as Horizon 2020 and COSME. These endeavors have provided dedicated funding and resources to facilitate research, development, and innovation within SMEs. Recognizing the significant role played by SMEs and innovation in driving economic growth, job creation, and competitiveness, the EU has prioritized targeted support and the establishment of an enabling business environment to unlock the full potential of SMEs as engines of innovation. Furthermore, the EU actively assesses SME innovation levels to identify areas of strength, weakness, and improvement. These concerted efforts demonstrate the EU's commitment to cultivating a culture of innovation and providing comprehensive support to SMEs in their entrepreneurial pursuits. Ultimately, these initiatives contribute to the overall innovation landscape in Europe, fostering sustainable growth and prosperity.

Longitudinal study of perceived gendered differences of entrepreneurial program participants

Entrepreneurial pursuits have historically encountered gender bias in many forms. The stereotypes associated with successful entrepreneurs combined with the upsurge in participation by women in entrepreneurship over recent years have sparked greater interest and research into its gendered differences. Using surveys to gauge the perception of knowledge and experience in entrepreneurship, we assess longitudinally over the last 5 years, differences in responses from men and women in an accelerator program at New York University, dubbed the ‘Startup Sprint’ program. Significant trends in confidence relating to STEM entrepreneurship knowledge and experience are tracked with notably lower average ratings for women. Halfway through the study, the COVID-19 pandemic occurred bringing with it external stressors and a transformation of learning and working environments. Considering the stressors of the COVID-19 pandemic and the transition to a remote educational environment, we analyze our survey results to better understand the impact of these changes on the gendered perceptions of entrepreneurship.

Drivers, Challenges, and Support of Student Entrepreneurship at the University of Lagos, Nigeria

Universities have been known to declare the intention to graduate students who are entrepreneurial and innovative in ways that spur socio-economic development. However, the outright increase in the rate students pursue white-collar jobs and delist from active entrepreneurial life has become alarming. There is more to student entrepreneurship development than teaching courses and setting up entrepreneurship centres. This study adopted a mixed-method approach to explore the drivers, challenges, and support available for student entrepreneurs at the University of Lagos. The study employed qualitative and quantitative methods to gather data from 15 students (*10 randomly selected through the university entrepreneurship centre and five students yet to engage with the university entrepreneurship centre). A researcher-designed open-ended questionnaire and key informant interview guide were used to gather data from the respondents. Responses from the questionnaire were synthesized and converted to quantitative data manually. In contrast, responses from the key informant interviews were coded into themes and stated verbatim in line with the study's objectives. The results showed that the craving for financial independence was the top of the reasons why students engage in entrepreneurship. In contrast, the inability to combine entrepreneurship with school activities served as one of the major challenges for student entrepreneurs. However, student entrepreneurs also need help with significant challenges, such as lack of funding, lack of support from the University, and difficulty balancing academic demands with entrepreneurial pursuits. The study also recommends that the university timetable and yearly schedule be designed to allow student entrepreneurs to balance their academic responsibilities with the demands of their businesses. Overall, the findings of this study have implications for universities, policymakers, and other stakeholders.

An integration of S-O-B-A paradigm to explore university students' entrepreneurial attitude, intention and action: do university and family support matter?

PurposeThe primary purpose of this study is to integrate the stimulus-organism-behavior-accomplishment (S-O-B-A) paradigm to investigate the chain effect of university students' perceived university and family support on their entrepreneurial action (EA) with a serial mediation of their attitude and intention.Design/methodology/approachThis study introduces stratified random sample to choose respondents and a cross-sectional research design. partial least square-structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) has applied to thoroughly investigate the behavioral intention concerned with students' entrepreneurship action.FindingsThe findings explored that perceived university support and family supports positively impact students' entrepreneurship attitude, where perceived family support creates statistically more powerful implications than university support. Students' attitude toward entrepreneurship positively affects their entrepreneurial intent, and finally, the entrepreneurial pursuit has an affirmative impact on students' EA.Originality/valueThis study incorporates the S-O-B-A paradigm for the very first time to investigate the effects of students' environmental support on their EA with double mediation by their attitude and intention.

New Visions of the Good Life: Entrepreneurial Pursuits of Chinese Elite University Students

In recent years, efforts to promote entrepreneurship as a possible career path for Chinese university students have intensified alongside the implementation of the official campaign of “mass entrepreneurship and mass innovation” (大众创业, 万众创新, dazhong chuangye, wanzhong chuangxin). Based on semi-structured interviews and long-term ethnographic fieldwork conducted at two Chinese elite universities, this article examines what motivates young Chinese to become entrepreneurs. It is argued that Chinese students imagine entrepreneurship as an alternative to ceaseless striving for high-paying jobs. They believe that becoming entrepreneurs will enable them to pursue their own interests, engage in meaningful projects, experience a life of excitement and variation, and become masters of their own time. This notion of the good life ties in with broader discourses of well-being that are currently proliferating among youth in urban China.

Rags to riches? Entrepreneurs' social classes, resourceful time allocation, and venture performance

Social classes shape entrepreneurial pursuits in that entrepreneurs from lower social class groups face more resource deficiencies compared to those from higher social class groups. In this study, we theorize that being resourceful with a particular resource—time—helps ventures run by lower-class entrepreneurs achieve better performance. However, we further argue that the extent to which entrepreneurs use time resourcefully is affected by the cognitive schemas stamped on them by their social class backgrounds. Our empirical analysis of 8663 Chinese private entrepreneurs between 2006 and 2010 lends robust support to these arguments. By revealing both material and cognitive constraints stemming from entrepreneurs' social classes, our study contributes to research on social classes and entrepreneurial resourcefulness and has important implications for understanding the persistence of inequality in entrepreneurship.

Digital technology-based entrepreneurial pursuit of the marginalised communities

United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals call for an inclusive development and empowerment of marginalised communities. However, scholars have suggested that one single discipline or party, Multinational Enterprises, Governments or NGOs, cannot tackle these issues alone. Parallel to this, nonmarket strategies emphasising the societal context of economic competition have appeared as an important topic of research. Taking an inter-disciplinary perspective, this paper examines the extant research in digital technology, entrepreneurship and development studies to identify whether these three fields can help us understand how these issues can be tackled from a nonmarket strategies' approach and propose a conceptual model. We analyse papers published from 1994 to 2018 in these fields to map the collective state of research and provide a conceptual framework. We believe that this will help in establishing a relationship between digital technology, entrepreneurship and inclusive development. It will also help us to understand how to transform the benefits of technology into jobs and income for marginalised communities. Holistic and Integrated Framework to Examine Formal Women Business Networks (FWBNs)

Research about women entrepreneurs is not new. In addition to the body of work on women entrepreneurship, networks and businesses, several resources, assistance, and support have been provided through various channels to assist women in their business and entrepreneurial pursuits. Although, research in these areas is popular, there is an aspect that has not gained as much attention – formal women business networks (FWBNs). FWBNs are networks that run like organisations and provide a way for women to network and pursue shared interests while gaining business benefits. These networks provide benefits such as funding, trainings, access to business resource, and are funded by various organisations as well as patronized by several women seeking the benefits they provide. Hence, there is a high expectation on these networks to not only deliver on the very much needed support for women entrepreneurs, but also, to deliver on the ROI to groups, organizations, bodies, and women that give to these networks. Furthermore, recent environmental/external influences like a pandemic have impacted the way entrepreneurs do business and increased the need for support and networks. Thus, it is important that FWBNs that serve to help women businesses be examined more closely and holistically. While literature provides some evidence of the importance of FWBNs, there is limited research about these FWBNs. This could be due to the limited number of frameworks, models or theories that holistically examines all the various possible elements in these networks, as well as the relationships between them. Therefore, a holistic and integrated framework that draws from existing frameworks and provides a lens to measure and explore all possible elements that impact a FWBN, can help provide better insights and understanding in several aspects. This paper is an attempt to provide a holistic and integrated framework that draws from different theories and literature concepts to examine the nature of FWBNs and how they contribute to the success of women entrepreneurs

Earnings of persons with disabilities: Who earns more (less) from entrepreneurial pursuit?

PurposePersons with disabilities (PWD) are among the largest and most diverse minority groups and among the most disadvantaged in terms of employment. Entrepreneurial pursuit is often advocated as a path toward employment, inclusion, and equality, yet few studies have investigated earning variation among PWD.Design/methodology/approachThe authors draw on social cognitive career theory (SCCT), and the disability employment and entrepreneurship literature to develop hypotheses about who among PWD are likely to earn more (less) from entrepreneurial pursuits. The authors then conduct analyses on the nationally representative sample of the Canadian Survey on Disability (CSD) by including all PWD engaged in entrepreneurial pursuit, and matching each to an organizationally employed counterpart of the same gender and race and of similar age and disability severity (n ≈ 810).FindingsEntrepreneurial pursuit has a stronger negative association with the earnings of PWD who experience earlier disability onset ages, those who report more unmet accommodation needs, and those who are female.Originality/valueFirst, this study applies SCCT to help bridge the literature on organizational employment barriers for PWD and entrepreneurs with disabilities. Second, we call into question the logic of neoliberalism about entrepreneurship by showing that barriers to organizational employment impact entrepreneurial pursuit decisions and thereby earnings. Third, we extend the understanding of entrepreneurial earnings among PWD by examining understudied disability attributes and demographic attributes. Lastly, this study is among the first to use a matched sample to empirically test the impact of entrepreneurial pursuit on the earnings of PWD.
