Although the benefits of entrepreneurship education have been well studied, how entrepreneurship education promotes university students' entrepreneurial intentions is less understood. Based on the entrepreneurial event model, we hypothesized that participation in business plan competition mediates the positive effect of entrepreneurship education on entrepreneurial intentions. We further proposed the moderating effect of entrepreneurial relationship self-efficacy, moderating effect of perceived entrepreneurial policy, and joint moderating effect of the both on the relationship between entrepreneurship education and participation in business plan competition. We tested our hypotheses with the data from a sample of 1352 university students from China. Data analysis results supported the mediating role of participation in business plan competition, and the moderating effect hypotheses. Our study suggests educators should put more effort on encouraging and supporting students to participate in the business plan competitions.
