Discovering Ngayaq Sasak Custom At Selaparang, Lombok

Ngayak Sasak is a form of old poetry used to express ideas, feelings, educational, and entertainment media. The purpose of this research is to gain concrete description about the forms of ngayak and its educational values. Based on the above explanation, in this research, the researcher tries to take the analysis of educational values and form of ngayak at Selaparang, Lombok, as the title of this thesis. The researcher uses the documentation technique and interview technique to collect the data by applying a direct question to the informants. The interview technique is used by the researcher to get the data that can be used as references in understanding Kayak. The research results are as follows: (1) Ngayak has close relationship with educational values, and it has high potential in society life because it contains a good suggestion and guidance for doing good deeds in our daily life. (2) For the societies, especially Selaparing society, it is hoped that the result of this study can be utilized as a guidance in investigating the values and norms contained in Ngayak Sasak.

Better Informed or Stay Naïve? Revisiting Different Types of Selective Exposure and the Impact on Political Learning

ABSTRACT This study extends the concept of selective exposure by examining different types of selectivity, including topical selectivity (entertainment vs. hard news), information channel selectivity (social media vs. traditional media), and ideological selectivity (like-minded vs. cross-cutting exposure). Drawing on a two-wave panel survey of American netizens (N = 834), this study revisits the debate about the potential of selective exposure to enhance or erode political learning. Results show that both topical and information channel selectivity directly reduce audience’s political knowledge while ideological selectivity does not significantly affect political learning. Topical selectivity reduces political knowledge indirectly through decreased offline political discussion, while ideological selectivity enhances political knowledge gain indirectly through increased offline political discussion. Online political discussion fails to mediate the relationships between all three types of selectivity and political knowledge since it does not have a significant relationship with political knowledge. The findings imply that the prevalence of entertainment media and social media use may even enlarge existing political knowledge gaps. In addition, the political knowledge gained by ideological selective exposure is also dangerous because it could be less comprehensive, unbalanced, and attitudinally biased.

Assessment of Community Radio Social Impact in Tanzania

Purpose: This paper assessed social impacts of three community radio stations located in three different social-economic zones in Tanzania namely, Kilosa in the Eastern Zone, Karagwe in the Lake Victoria Zone and Orkonerei Community Radio (ORS) in the Northern Zone. 
 Methodology: The study used cross sectional design whereby data were collected at one point in time. Purposive sampling methods were used to obtain 585 (48% female) respondents based on whether the area was well covered by community radio broadcasts or otherwise. Data were collected interview schedule, in-depth interview of key informants, systematic observations and focus group discussions. Key informants included community radio management and journalists working in the community radios. As for focus group discussions, four discussions were held (two in each community radio) with a total of 40 respondents. 
 Findings: The study found that 51% of the respondents viewed community radio stations as enhanced access to information (news, current affairs and educational informational). On popularity, the study found that on average, community radios were more popular with local audience than other radio stations. This was due to broadcasting local contents. An analysis of sex and education levels of people who preferred community radio showed that 53.4% were men and 46.5% were women. As for education levels, 57% of those who preferred community radio broadcast had primary education followed by those without formal education at 24%. However, contrary to the theory of community radio which asserts that community radios focus on local social economic development, the study found that the most dominant theme was music and general entertainment.
 Unique Contribution to Theory, Practice and Policy: The study found that community radio stations have enhanced information flow (news, current affairs and education). They are also most popular with local audience compared to other radios. This indicates that if tailored to address contemporary local development issues, community radio can have huge impact. However, the study found that, the most dominant themes in studied stations was music and general entertainment. This is contrary to the theory asserting that community radio should focus on local social development issues. This calls for further investigation on circumstances leading community radios deviation from the popular theory.

Meaningful Media Experiences and Vaccination Message Communication: An Experimental Study with Vaccine-Hesitant Individuals

Guided by the eudaimonic media and the health persuasion literature, the current study explores how meaningful emotions elicited from entertainment media exposure decreases anti-vaccination attitudes among vaccine-hesitant individuals. Results of a between-subjects experiment (N = 409) showed that participants who viewed meaningful music videos (vs. neutral videos) and vaccination messages embedded in the user-generated comments reported more empathy, less reactance, and less anti-vaccination attitudes. Multigroup analysis revealed that this association was held for participants who were hesitant about whether they would get fully vaccinated, but not for participants who were determined to not get vaccinated. Theoretical and practical implications were discussed.

Depictions of Firearms and Other Projectile Weapons in Top-Selling Japanese Manga.

Firearm violence is a pressing public health issue in the United States and becoming increasingly so worldwide. This concern has prompted researchers to examine the prevalence of such violence in media entertainment. Japanese manga have a large youth readership in the U.S., yet research on their depictions of firearms is presently lacking. We randomly selected 50 chapters from each of ten top-selling manga series worldwide (N = 500) to identify dialogue, action, and other illustrations involving handguns, rifles, machine guns, other projectile weapons, and bombs. Of the 500 chapters, 129 (25.8%) had at least one depiction of a firearm or other projectile weapon, with 684 instances of characters handling (e.g., carrying, holding, firing, reloading) such a weapon. Of the 384 unique characters so depicted, the vast majority were males (88.3%), adults (92.2%), and "good" characters (73.4%). Manga readers, especially male adolescents and preteens, are frequently exposed to storylines in which one or more characters are using a firearm or other projectile weapon. Working collaboratively, manga publishers and distributors should act to develop and implement a comprehensive rating system to flag content that may be harmful to youth so that parents can more easily monitor what their children are reading.

Elevating metaverse virtual reality experiences through network‐integrated neuro‐fuzzy emotion recognition and adaptive content generation algorithms

AbstractInteractions between individuals and digital material have completely changed with the advent of the Metaverse. Due to this, there is an immediate need to construct cutting‐edge technology that can recognize the emotions of users and continuously provide material that is relevant to their psychological states, improving their overall experience. An inventive method that combines natural language processing adaptive content generation algorithms and neuro‐fuzzy‐based support vector machines natural language processing (SVM‐NLP) is proposed by researchers to meet this demand. With this merging, the Metaverse will be able to offer highly tailored and engaging experiences. Initially, a neuro‐fuzzy algorithm was developed to identify people's emotional moods from their physiological reactions and other biometric information. Fuzzy Logic and Support Vector Machine work together to manage the inherent ambiguity and unpredictability, which results in a more exact and accurate categorization of emotions. A key component of the ACGA is NLP technology, which uses real‐time emotional data to dynamically modify and personalize characters, stories, and interactive features in the Metaverse. The novelty of the proposed approach lies in the innovative integration of neuro‐fuzzy‐based SVM‐NLP algorithms to accurately recognize and adapt to users' emotional states, enhancing the Metaverse experience across various applications. The proposed method is implemented using Python software. This adaptive approach significantly enhances users' immersion, emotional involvement, and overall satisfaction within the augmented reality environment by tailoring information to their responses. The findings show that the SVM‐NLP emotion identification algorithm based on neuro‐fuzzy, has a high degree of accuracy in recognizing emotional states, which holds promise for creating a Metaverse that is more emotionally compelling and immersive. Stronger human–computer interactions and a wider range of applications, including virtual therapy, educational resources, entertainment, and social media networking, might be made possible by integrating SVM‐NLP. These sophisticated systems are around 92% accurate in interpreting the emotions.

WHY THEATRE? PERSPECTIVES FROM INDIAN THEATRE ARTISTES IN THE CONTEXT OF NĀṬYAŚĀSTRA

Nāṭyaśāstra is an Indian ancient Sanskrit text on dramaturgy written by Āchārya Bhartmuni in the 5th century. The story of the origin, development, and evolution of Nāṭyaśāstra is described in the very first chapter of the text. It also reveals the emergence of theatre practice. According to Nāṭyaśāstra, theatre serves the purpose of entertaining as well as educating its audiences. This paper aims to examine the contemporary theatre practice on the principle of Nāṭyaśāstra in this context. The objective of the present research paper is to study the motivation, inspiration, and purpose of contemporary theatre practitioners under the light of the purpose of theatre according to Nāṭyaśāstra.The present research is qualitative. The methodology employed for data collection is the interview of 46 theatre practitioners using semi-structured interviews. The data has been collected from prominent theatre festivals held in five different North Indian cities namely Delhi, Bhopal, Jaipur, Lucknow, and Patna. The analysis of the interviews is done using thematic analysis.The findings of the research show that contemporary theatre practitioners have personal aspirations as well as social obligations to practising theatre. Contemporary theatre practitioners also believe that theatre is a medium of entertainment as well as sensitizing people which aligns with the principle of Nāṭyaśāstra.

Textual Poachers and Fandom Dynamics: A Study of Filipino College Students

In the realm of contemporary culture, fandom, particularly among the youth, has become a focal point due to its participatory nature, fostering active engagement and creative expression. Coined by Henry Jenkins in 1992, fan culture, or "Textual Poaching," highlights fans' dual roles as consumers and creators within various media landscapes. This research investigates the engagement patterns of Filipino college students within their respective fandoms, employing Jenkins' framework of participatory culture as a theoretical scaffold. Utilizing a qualitative methodology, the study scrutinized 175 student artifacts to elucidate how members of fandoms articulate their affiliations and negotiate communal dynamics. Findings suggest students' decisions to affiliate with particular fandoms depend on their immediate needs, interests, and social standing. Fandoms centered around online gaming, entertainment media, and cinematic or televisual narratives are deemed valuable by students, providing inclusive spaces for social interaction, and constructing personal identity.

The Integration of Two-dimensional Culture and Local Culture: A Case Study of the Global Sensation “Genshin Impact”

Genshin Impact stands out as a highly successful two-dimensional game, which effectively integrates two-dimensional culture with local cultural elements to create a unique charm within the game. This study focuses on Genshin Impact and utilizes communication science theories, particularly those related to localization. Additionally, it delves into the historical process of two-dimensional culture. By conducting a comprehensive analysis of the two-dimensional and local culture content presented within the game, this paper aims to explore the process of reinterpretation and integration of two-dimensional culture under the influence of the local context. Additionally, this research provides suggestions on how to create excellent popular culture products. Genshin Impact serves as a prime example of how contemporary media can harmoniously merge elements from distinct cultural backgrounds, ultimately captivating a global audience. Understanding this fusion of cultures within such a successful product provides valuable lessons for the broader realm of cultural exchange and entertainment media.

Use of game-based educational entertainment media to foster mathematical problem-solving proficiency in pre-service mathematics teachers

<span lang="EN-ID">The capacity to solve mathematical problems is an essential component of the professional abilities that pre-service instructors of mathematics are required to possess. When it comes to coping with technological advancements in the sphere of education, this skill serves as the foundation. For the purpose of enhancing one's capacity to solve mathematical problems, this study proposes an innovative method that involves the use of game-based educational entertainment media (GEM). Within the realm of development research, this research technique focuses on the ways in which problem-solving skills can be enhanced by participation in activities that are based on game-based entertainment media. The ADDIE phases—analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation—are the steps that are utilised in the process of development. The GEM was utilised by 94 pre-service mathematics teachers who participated in this research. GEM is effective in developing mathematical problem-solving skills, according to the findings of the research. This is accomplished by encouraging pre-service mathematics teachers to identify problems, model them, solve problems mathematically, and assess the results of their efforts.</span>

Scrutinizing the Myth of Kumunity: The Semiotics of the Philippines’ Pinoy Big Brother Season 10

In applying Roland Barthes' semiotic theory to the analysis of Pinoy Big Brother Season 10 (Dyogi, Katigbak, Vidanes & Andrada, 2021-2022), this study delves into the intricate layers of meaning embedded in the show's 'Kumunity' concept, a term created by the fusion of 'Kumu,' a social media entertainment app, and "community." The primary focus is on unraveling the myth that the 'kumunity' symbolizes within the broader context of the reality television landscape in the Philippines. The investigation meticulously scrutinized selected components of the show—images, music, and dialogues—to elucidate the orders of signification, exposing the nuanced and multifaceted meanings conveyed. The 'kumunity' is portrayed as mirroring a tangible community with shared goals among housemates, showcasing a cohesive objective reminiscent of a localized collective. However, beneath this surface portrayal, this study uncover a rich tapestry of implicit meanings. These include subtle assertions of authority and power dynamics, the reinforcement of cultural nuances, the elevation and glorification of resilience as a virtue, and instances of disunity within the overarching support system. The study, through extensive analysis, goes beyond the apparent and reveals the intricate web of hidden ideologies within the signs presented in Pinoy Big Brother Season 10. It sheds light on the subtle yet impactful societal messages that permeate the realm of reality television, contributing to a more comprehensive understanding of the show's influence on cultural perceptions and dynamics. Reel reflections: the role of entertainment media narratives in coping among young adult cancer survivors

Introduction Young adult cancer survivors (YACS; ages 18–39) report a significant psychological burden. Entertainment media narratives (e.g., books, movies, shows that are produced for mass consumption) might be an effective tool for reducing this distress, although little is known about present use among YACS. Method YACS completed a survey about their use of entertainment media narratives to cope with cancer using an adapted version of the Brief COPE. Additionally, YACS reported their use of entertainment media narratives to start conversations about their experience with others, and they described features of entertainment media narratives that they found helpful in coping. Results We recruited 108 YACS from three recruitment sites. Most participants were White (n = 65), female (n = 54), and recruited from Prolific (n = 56), an Internet-based, crowdsourced data collection platform. Participants were, on average, 30 years old and 45 months from the completion of their primary cancer treatment. YACS who used entertainment media to cope with cancer (n = 32; 29.6%) were significantly younger and significantly closer to the end of their primary treatment. Compared to nonusers, users of entertainment media narratives to cope were also more likely to identify as Black; identifying as Black was associated with a 2.05-factor increase in using narrative entertainment media to cope with cancer even when controlling for other demographic differences. Additionally, compared to their peers, Black YACS reported greater use of narratives to start cancer-related conversations. Emotional and inspirational storylines were the most helpful story features. Discussion Some YACS, especially Black YACS, use stories to cope with their cancer experience. YACS patients could find stories useful in exploring their cancer-related emotions, although the exact benefits are still unknown.

ANALISIS DAMPAK NEGATIF PENGGUNAAN MEDIA SOSIAL TIKTOK TERHADAP AKHLAK SANTRIWATI KELAS 10 MA MA’AHID KUDUS

The progress and development of information technology has many positive impacts and negative impacts. Judging from the soaring popularity of social media applications that provide entertainment platforms among students at this time, the use of social media actually has a lot of positive impacts on students, but there are also many negative impacts of social media for student behavior and morals. This study aims to analyze the negative impact of using TikTok social media on student morals. This research uses qualitative methods used to research and get answers to existing problems. Data collection techniques carried out by researchers are by observation and interviews. The basic core of the information is the interview results of grade 10 students and ustadzah MA Ma'ahid Kudus. The results of this study show that the use of TikTok social media has a negative impact on grade 10 MA Ma'ahid students which makes students become addicted and lazy, other negative impacts such as students using the TikTok application as an entertainment medium to dance and then publish on social media, a lot of inappropriate speech, with these negative impacts, a solution is needed to overcome the negative impact of using social media TikTok is like controlling yourself by using time well and the existence of direction, knowledge from teachers or ustadzah on TikTok social media.

Study on the Image Construction of Korean Popular Talk Show Variety Artists

As an extremely important part of the development of Korean pop culture represented by the Korean "idol" industry, the artiste image is supported and loved by a wide range of fans for its strong style, vibrant and visually appealing, and trend-setting beauty. As an entertainment medium in the new era, variety shows have also made a significant contribution to the development of the Korean cultural industry. Therefore, the image construction method that takes "the contrast of the artist's image" as the main entry point can maximally amplify the artist's own charismatic focus under the angle of variety show shooting, especially under the interview nature of the conversation camera, which not only allows the audience to understand and comprehend the artist, but also gives the artist a space for better emotional communication with the fans. It also gives the artiste a space to communicate with their fans emotionally.

Tangible Radio: Deaf studies and sound studies coalitions

As a medium for information, entertainment and communication, radio had taken precedence over television for decades, at least in terms of its accessibility in all households. Television and later the internet never completely annulled its aural condition, while its form altered to keep up with developments in terms of asynchrony or subject areas. Today it is considered the predominantly ‘cool medium’. Recent developments in television and the internet’s ways of operating render it a more detached medium than the alternative, given that a medium can change ‘temperature’ over time depending on the use (Levinson 2001: 108). But what about its accessibility to d/Deaf and Hard-of-hearing groups? Are these communities excluded by default from radio programmes and artistic creation through radiophonic media? In this article I analyse a case study, ‘Tangible Radio – Class on Air’ workshop, as part of B-AIR Creative Europe programme, as well as the convergences of sound art and the deaf experience in terms of co-creation, participation and educational processes. I will argue that radio as a medium can very successfully include the d/Deaf and Hard-of-hearing communities if relevant methodologies and technologies are encompassed to its processes.

Hampered by creation: the unintended consequences of COVID-19 policies on creative firms

ABSTRACT The COVID-19 pandemic abruptly interrupted operations for many industries, but in particular the live entertainment sector that was effectively forced into a global shutdown. In response, governments swooped in to keep these organisations afloat by introducing policies aimed at compensating for lost revenues and supporting other forms of activity such as creation. While these reactive measures undoubtedly provided timely and vital relief for some, this study suggests that they also induced important distortions over time. Based on interviews with circus arts managers, the results show that these policies unintendedly introduced or contributed to four main ‘asymmetries’ – outlets, customer base, structure, and talent – that now hamper creative organisations as they transition out of the pandemic. This study contributes to the emerging body of work on the unforeseen consequences of COVID-related support measures, challenges the dominant contextual approach to managing ambidexterity, and provides valuable insights for government and policy actors.

The effect of social media marketing on voting intention; an application of multidimensional panel data

PurposeThis study examines the effect of social media marketing on voting intention applying a combination of fuzzy logic methodology and a multidimensional panel data model.Design/methodology/approachThe study adopts a multidimensional panel data method that includes several fixed effects. The dependent variable is a multifaceted construct that measures the participants’ intention to vote. The independent variables are electronic word of mouth (eWOM), customisation (CUS), entertainment (ENT), interaction (INT), trendiness (TRD), candidate’s perceived image (CPI), religious beliefs (RB), gender and age. The grouping variables that signify fixed effects are employment status, level of education, mostly used social media and religion. First, the significance of said fixed effects was tested through an ANOVA process. Then, the main model was estimated, including the significant grouping variables as fixed effects.FindingsEmployment status and level of education were significant fixed effects. Also, eWOM, ENT, INT, CPI, RB and gender significantly affected participants’ voting intention.Research limitations/implicationsBeing based on a questionnaire that asked participants about how they perceive different aspects of social media, the present study is limited to their perceptions. Therefore, further studies covering the voters’ behaviour in action could be efficient complements to the present study.Practical implicationsThe findings could guide the political parties into prioritizing the aspects of social media in forming an effective campaign resulting in being elected.Social implicationsThe findings have the potential to help the public in making better informed decisions when voting. Furthermore, the results of this study indicate applications for social media which are beyond leisure time fillers.Originality/valueFuzzy logic and multidimensional panel data estimates are this study’s novelty and originality. Structural equation modelling and crisp linguistic values have been used in previous studies on social media’s effect on voting intent. The former refines the data gathered from a questionnaire, and the latter considers the possibility of including different grouping factors to achieve a more efficient and less biased estimation.

Digital technology and Nollywood film industry

Film also known as the 7th Art is a medium for education, information and entertainment which has over the years undergone a series of technological innovations. This paper examines the evolution of cinema from the ‘silent era’ to the ‘new age era’ characterized by a trajectory of innovations and improvements due to technological developments. The paper adapts the Diffusion of Innovations Theory (DIT) propounded by Everett Rogers in 1962 to assess the extent to which innovations in digital technology have altered the old traditional film production landscape. The paper seeks, among others, to determine and highlight the significant areas technology has impacted on the development of motion pictures globally with particular emphasis on the Nigerian film industry popularly known as Nollywood. Our major point of interest is on the roles, impacts, challenges and prospects of digital technology in the areas of production, distribution, marketing and exhibition of films. By using the assumptions of DIT which seeks to explain how, why, and at what rate new ideas and technology spread. The paper further reviews relevant literature and some empirical results from scholars to justify its claims. We are able to establish in our findings that digital technology is the driving force of film development which has contributed enormously to world cinema. Furthermore, the rapid development and emergence of Nollywood film industry as the second largest producer of films in the world next to Bollywood of India is attributable to the emergence of digital technology.

The Development of Augmented Reality As English Learning Media in Junior High School

The existence of learning media on various platforms provides variety and assistance for teachers in delivering learning materials. Not much has been developed in educational media compared to entertainment media such as gaming, films, songs, dance, and music. Educational media need to be packaged in a simple, effective, and efficient manner and respond to the needs of today’s students. In the context of the world of learning English at the junior high school level, learning media is needed as an effort to provide real experience in terms of honing English communication skills. Augmented Reality is one of the media that is able to bridge the needs of students, namely making abstract learning experiences feel concrete. Therefore, this research aims to design learning media for junior high school English on the basis of Augmented Reality with content containing stories from North Sumatra. The research method applied in this study is Research & Development. Data acquisition techniques used were documentation, questionnaires, interviews, and tests which were applied in accordance with nine research stages, namely: (1) identification and analysis of media needs; (2) collection of media materials and tools; (3) development of media prototype designs; (4) implementation media prototype; (5) media prototype validation; (6) media prototype revision; (7) media trial on junior high school students; (8) final revision; and (9) media prototype that has been tested. The final result of this study contains AR in the form of flash cards. AR markers are printed on cards and students only focus their smartphone cameras on markers that have been printed in card form. After the camera has successfully scanned the marker, a learning video will appear. There are five cards (markers) in this study, and each card will play a different learning video.
