Metabolic activity of gut microbial enrichment cultures from different marine species and their transformation abilities to plastic additives

The role of the gut microbiota in host physiology has been previously elucidated for some marine organisms, but little information is available on their metabolic activity involved in transformation of environmental pollutants. This study assessed the metabolic profiles of the gut microbial cultures from grouper (Epinephelus coioides), green mussel (Perna viridis) and giant tiger prawn (Penaeus monodon) and investigated their transformation mechanisms to typical plastic additives. Community-level physiological profiling analysis confirmed the utilization profiles of the microbial cultures including carbon sources of carbohydrates, amines, carboxylic acids, phenolic compounds, polymers and amino acids, and the plastic additives of organophosphate flame retardants, tetrabromobisphenol A derivates and bisphenols. Using in vitro incubation, triphenyl phosphate (TPHP) was found to be rapidly metabolized into diphenyl phosphate by the gut microbiota as a representative ester-containing plastic additive, whereas the transformation of BPA (a representative phenol) was relatively slower. Interestingly, all three kinds of microbial cultures efficiently transformed the hepatic metabolite of BPA (BPA-G) back to BPA, thereby increasing its bioavailability in the body. The specific enzyme analysis confirmed the ability of the gut microbiota to perform the metabolic reactions. The results of 16S rRNA sequencing and network analysis revealed that the genera Escherichia-Shigella, Citrobacter, and Anaerospora were functional microbes, and their collaboration with fermentative microbes played pivotal roles in the transformation of the plastic additives. The structure-specific transformations by the gut microbiota and their distinct bioavailability deserve more attention in the future.

"Candidatus Nealsonbacteria" Are Likely Biomass Recycling Ectosymbionts of Methanogenic Archaea in a Stable Benzene-Degrading Enrichment Culture.

The Candidate Phyla Radiation (CPR), also referred to as superphylum Patescibacteria, is a very large group of bacteria with no pure culture representatives discovered by 16S rRNA sequencing or genome-resolved metagenomic analyses of environmental samples. Within the CPR, candidate phylum Parcubacteria, previously referred to as OD1, is prevalent in anoxic sediments and groundwater. Previously, we had identified a specific member of the Parcubacteria (referred to as DGGOD1a) as an important member of a methanogenic benzene-degrading consortium. Phylogenetic analyses herein place DGGOD1a within the clade "Candidatus Nealsonbacteria." Because of its persistence over many years, we hypothesized that "Ca. Nealsonbacteria" DGGOD1a must play an important role in sustaining anaerobic benzene metabolism in the consortium. To try to identify its growth substrate, we amended the culture with a variety of defined compounds (pyruvate, acetate, hydrogen, DNA, and phospholipid), as well as crude culture lysate and three subfractions thereof. We observed the greatest (10-fold) increase in the absolute abundance of "Ca. Nealsonbacteria" DGGOD1a only when the consortium was amended with crude cell lysate. These results implicate "Ca. Nealsonbacteria" in biomass recycling. Fluorescence in situ hybridization and cryogenic transmission electron microscope images revealed that "Ca. Nealsonbacteria" DGGOD1a cells were attached to larger archaeal Methanothrix cells. This apparent epibiont lifestyle was supported by metabolic predictions from a manually curated complete genome. This is one of the first examples of bacterial-archaeal episymbiosis and may be a feature of other "Ca. Nealsonbacteria" found in anoxic environments. IMPORTANCE An anaerobic microbial enrichment culture was used to study members of candidate phyla that are difficult to grow in the lab. We were able to visualize tiny "Candidatus Nealsonbacteria" cells attached to a large Methanothrix cell, revealing a novel episymbiosis.

Acquiring Iron-Reducing Enrichment Cultures: Environments, Methods and Quality Assessments

Lateritic duricrusts cover iron ore deposits and form spatially restricted, unique canga ecosystems endangered by mining. Iron cycling, i.e., the dissolution and subsequent precipitation of iron, is able to restitute canga duricrusts, generating new habitats for endangered biota in post-mining landscapes. As iron-reducing bacteria can accelerate this iron cycling, we aim to retrieve microbial enrichment cultures suitable to mediate the large-scale restoration of cangas. For that, we collected water and sediment samples from the Carajás National Forest and cultivated the iron-reducing microorganisms therein using a specific medium. We measured the potential to reduce iron using ferrozine assays, growth rate and metabolic activity. Six out of seven enrichment cultures effectively reduced iron, showing that different environments harbor iron-reducing bacteria. The most promising enrichment cultures were obtained from environments with repeated flooding and drying cycles, i.e., periodically inundated grasslands and a plateau of an iron mining waste pile characterized by frequent soaking. Selected enrichment cultures contained iron-reducing and fermenting bacteria, such as Serratia and Enterobacter. We found higher iron-reducing potential in enrichment cultures with a higher cell density and microorganism diversity. The obtained enrichment cultures should be tested for canga restoration to generate benefits for biodiversity and contribute to more sustainable iron mining in the region.

Biological Reduction of Perchlorate from Spent Modified Reed Mediated by an Enriched Microbial Culture

Disposal of untreated perchlorate-laden modified reed (MR) generated in the treatment of contaminated water risks further contamination issues. The primary aim of this study was to assess the enriched microbial culture (EMC)-mediated biodegradation of perchlorate bound to spent quaternary amine-MR adsorbent. The culture was enriched to utilize perchlorate as an electron acceptor and brewer’s yeast as an electron donor. Kinetics experiments were performed to determine biodegradation rates and the total time for complete removal. The secondary aim of this research was the development and testing of a microwave-assisted extraction (MAE)-facilitated accurate perchlorate quantitation method. Extraction efficiency was optimized by adjusting the nitric acid concentration, resulting in 90 ± 5% recovery. Results show that EMC can degrade aqueous perchlorate effectively and consistently. EMC can also effectively degrade adsorbed perchlorate from spent MR. In conclusion, anaerobic biodegradation of perchlorate from spent MR can be used as an efficient, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly alternative or supplement to other treatment options, such as ion exchange and incineration. This approach can also be an effective solution to the waste generated by using MR to remove perchlorate from contaminated water.

Microbial active functional modules derived from network analysis and metabolic interactions decipher the complex microbiome assembly in mangrove sediments

BackgroundThe metabolic interactions of microbes significantly affect the assembly of microbial communities that play important roles in biogeochemical processes. However, most interspecies interactions between microorganisms in natural communities remain unknown, leading to a poor understanding of community assembly mechanisms.ResultsHere, we used a genome-scale metabolic modeling-based approach to explore the potential interactions among bacteria and archaea in mangrove sediments. More than half of the assembled microbial species (backsim 340) combined about 3000 pairwise metabolic interaction relationship with high potential. The examples of predicted interactions are consistent with the implications of studies based on microbial enrichment/culture, indicating the feasibility of our strategy for extracting diverse potential interactions from complex interspecies networks. Moreover, a substantial number of previously unknown microbial metabolic interactions were also predicted. We proposed a concept of microbial active functional module (mAFM), defined as a consortium constituted by a group of microbes possessing relatively high metabolic interactions via which they can actively realize certain dominant functions in element transformations. Based on the metabolic interactions and the transcript distribution of microorganisms, five mAFMs distributed in different layers of the sediments were identified. The whole group of mAFMs covered most of the principal pathways in the cycle of carbon, nitrogen, and sulfur, while each module possessed divergently dominant functions. According to this distinction, we inferred that the mAFMs participated in the element cycles via their intra-cycle and the inter-exchange among them and the sediments.ConclusionsThe results of this study greatly expanded interaction potential of microbes in mangrove sediments, which could provide supports for prospective mutualistic system construction and microbial enrichment culture. Effect of the coexistence of endosulfan on the lindane biodegradation by Novosphingobium barchaimii and microbial enrichment cultures

Organochlorine pesticides, especially lindane and endosulfan, have been demonstrated to be both biodegradable and frequently coexistent, but their inhibitory effect has never been studied. In this study, we investigated the effect of endosulfan coexistence on lindane degradation to a lindane-degrading isolate, Novosphingobium barchaimii strain LL02, and mixed enrichment cultures from two different inocula. Our results of the lindane degradation batch experiments demonstrated that endosulfan concentration above 20 mg L−1 causes significant inhibition to the lindane degradation efficiency of the strain LL02. Besides, the acidic conditions at pH 5.0 to 6.0 further decreased its lindane degradation rate constants by 57% compared to the neutral and alkaline conditions. For the mixed microbial cultures, the lindane degradation efficiency in the lindane/endosulfan co-contamination conditions decreased by 35.7%–50.7% compared to the lindane alone conditions. From our 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing results through the PacBio platform, most of the predominant bacteria in the lindane-enriched cultures were depressed in the lindane/endosulfan-enriched cultures. Moreover, bacteria of Burkholderia australis, Chujaibacter soli, Flavitalea flava, and one Rhodanobacteraceae bacterium were relatively highly abundant in the co-contamination enrichment cultures, suggesting their potential for lindane degradation under the endosulfan stress. Our results demonstrated that endosulfan coexistence causes inhibitory impacts on lindane biodegradation toward both lindane-degrading bacteria and mixed microbial cultures. The coexistence of multiple organochlorine pesticides on the biodegradation efficiencies should be carefully considered when applying bioremediation to remove organochlorine pesticide contamination.

Production of a newly discovered PHA family member with an isobutyrate-fed enrichment culture

Using microbial enrichment cultures for the production of waste-derived polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) is a promising technology to recover secondary resources. Volatile fatty acids (VFAs) form the preferred substrate for PHA production. Isobutyrate is a VFA appearing in multiple waste valorization routes, such as anaerobic fermentation, chain elongation, and microbial electrosynthesis, but has never been assessed individually on its PHA production potential. This research investigates isobutyrate as sole carbon source for a microbial enrichment culture in comparison to its structural isomer butyrate. The results reveal that the enrichment of isobutyrate has a very distinct character regarding microbial community development, PHA productivity, and even PHA composition. Although butyrate is a superior substrate in almost every aspect, this research shows that isobutyrate-rich waste streams have a noteworthy PHA-producing potential. The main finding is that the dominant microorganism, a Comamonas sp., is linked to the production of a unique PHA family member, poly(3-hydroxyisobutyrate) (PHiB), up to 37% of the cell dry weight. Investigation on the utilization of coal washery rejects by different microbial sources for biogenic methane production

High energy consumption and depletion of fossil fuels lead to the introduction of new technologies to produce alternative fuels with fewer emissions of greenhouse gases. The present investigation was focused to utilize the waste coal washery rejects as a substrate to produce biogenic methane under optimum conditions. Experiments were performed to explore the efficiency of non-coal samples (cow dung, distillery anaerobic digester sludge) and coal mines enriched samples in the degradation of coal washery rejects. Further cow dung, distillery anaerobic sludge, and coal washery rejects were taken at various concentrations to develop anaerobic slurry and analysed for its biogas production. The anaerobic slurry which contains 1:1:1 of cow dung, distillery anaerobic sludge, and coal washery rejects produced methane of around 55.7%. The coal enriched samples showed a maximum of 22.6% of methane. Subsequently, the best methane-producing anaerobic non-coal consortiums were compared with coal enriched microbial culture in converting coal washery rejects of 10 g/l to methane. Results revealed that cow dung inoculum and coal mine enriched inoculum source produced the nearly same amount of methane. This study suggested that the selected anaerobic slurries and coal enriched samples can utilize sub-bituminous coal washery rejects in methane production. Thus, these consortiums can be applied in converting a large amount of coal washery rejects into methane thus can lead to the reclamation of the site.

Mechanistic insights into the success of xenobiotic degraders resolved from metagenomes of microbial enrichment cultures

Even though microbial communities can be more effective at degrading xenobiotics than cultured micro-organisms, yet little is known about the microbial strategies that underpin xenobiotic biodegradation by microbial communities. Here, we employ metagenomic community sequencing to explore the mechanisms that drive the development of 49 xenobiotic-degrading microbial communities, which were enriched from 7 contaminated soils or sediments with a range of xenobiotic compounds. We show that multiple microbial strategies likely drive the development of xenobiotic degrading communities, notably (i) presence of genes encoding catabolic enzymes to degrade xenobiotics; (ii) presence of genes encoding efflux pumps; (iii) auxiliary catabolic genes on plasmids; and (iv) positive interactions dominate microbial communities with efficient degradation. Overall, the integrated analyses of microbial ecological strategies advance our understanding of microbial processes driving the biodegradation of xenobiotics and promote the design of bioremediation systems.

Aerobic biodegradation of emerging azole contaminants by return activated sludge and enrichment cultures

Azoles are an emerging class of contaminants with a growing ubiquitous presence in the environment. This study investigates the aerobic microbial degradation of four azoles, pyrazole (PA), 1,2,4-triazole (TA), benzotriazole (BTA) and 5-methylbenzotriazole (5-MBTA), with return activated sludge and microbial enrichment cultures. Slow degradation of PA was observed in the presence of glucose and NH4+ with a peak degradation rate of 0.5 mg d-1 gVSS-1. TA was found to be highly persistent, with no significant degradation observed in 6–8 months under any incubation condition. In contrast, the benzotriazoles were readily degraded at faster rates in all incubation conditions. The degradation rates observed for BTA and 5-MBTA, when provided as the sole substrates, were 8.1 and 16.5 mg d-1 gVSS-1, respectively. Two enrichment cultures, one degrading BTA and the other degrading 5-MBTA, were developed from the activated sludge. Mass balance studies revealed complete mineralization of 5-MBTA and partial breakdown of BTA by the enrichment cultures. Nocardioides sp. and Pandoraea pnomenusa were the most abundant bacteria in the BTA and 5-MBTA degrading enrichment cultures, respectively. The research shows large differences in the biodegradability of various azoles, ranging from complete mineralization of 5-MBTA to complete persistence for TA.

Biomineralization of Uranium-Phosphates Fueled by Microbial Degradation of Isosaccharinic Acid (ISA).

Geological disposal is the globally preferred long-term solution for higher activity radioactive wastes (HAW) including intermediate level waste (ILW). In a cementitious disposal system, cellulosic waste items present in ILW may undergo alkaline hydrolysis, producing significant quantities of isosaccharinic acid (ISA), a chelating agent for radionuclides. Although microbial degradation of ISA has been demonstrated, its impact upon the fate of radionuclides in a geological disposal facility (GDF) is a topic of ongoing research. This study investigates the fate of U(VI) in pH-neutral, anoxic, microbial enrichment cultures, approaching conditions similar to the far field of a GDF, containing ISA as the sole carbon source, and elevated phosphate concentrations, incubated both (i) under fermentation and (ii) Fe(III)-reducing conditions. In the ISA-fermentation experiment, U(VI) was precipitated as insoluble U(VI)-phosphates, whereas under Fe(III)-reducing conditions, the majority of the uranium was precipitated as reduced U(IV)-phosphates, presumably formed via enzymatic reduction mediated by metal-reducing bacteria, including Geobacter species. Overall, this suggests the establishment of a microbially mediated "bio-barrier" extending into the far field geosphere surrounding a GDF is possible and this biobarrier has the potential to evolve in response to GDF evolution and can have a controlling impact on the fate of radionuclides.

Reconstruction and evaluation of oil-degrading consortia isolated from sediments of hydrothermal vents in the South Mid-Atlantic Ridge

In this study, sediments were collected from two different sites in the deep-sea hydrothermal region of the South Atlantic Ocean. Two microbial enrichment cultures (H7S and H11S), which were enriched from the sediments collected at two sample sites, could effectively degrade petroleum hydrocarbons. The bacterial diversity was analyzed by high-throughput sequencing method. The petroleum degradation ability were evaluated by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry and gravimetric analysis. We found that the dominant oil-degrading bacteria of enrichment cultures from the deep-sea hydrothermal area belonged to the genera Pseudomonas, Nitratireductor, Acinetobacter, and Brevundimonas. After a 14-day degradation experiment, the enrichment culture H11S, which was obtained near a hydrothermal vent, exhibited a higher degradation efficiency for alkanes (95%) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (88%) than the enrichment culture H7S. Interestingly, pristane and phytane as biomarkers were degraded up to 90% and 91% respectively by the enrichment culture H11S, and six culturable oil-degrading bacterial strains were isolated. Acinetobacter junii strain H11S-25, Nitratireductor sp. strain H11S-31 and Pseudomonas sp. strain H11S-28 were used at a density ratio of 95:4:1 to construct high-efficiency oil-degrading consortium H. After a three-day biodegradation experiment, consortium H showed high degradation efficiencies of 74.2% and 65.7% for total alkanes and PAHs, respectively. The degradation efficiency of biomarkers such as pristane and high-molecular-weight polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (such as CHR) reached 84.5% and 80.48%, respectively. The findings of this study indicate that the microorganisms in the deep-sea hydrothermal area are potential resources for degrading petroleum hydrocarbons. Consortium H, which was artificially constructed, showed a highly efficient oil-degrading capacity and has significant application prospects in oil pollution bioremediation.

Synergistic biodegradation of aromatic-aliphatic copolyester plastic by a marine microbial consortium

The degradation of synthetic polymers by marine microorganisms is not as well understood as the degradation of plastics in soil and compost. Here, we use metagenomics, metatranscriptomics and metaproteomics to study the biodegradation of an aromatic-aliphatic copolyester blend by a marine microbial enrichment culture. The culture can use the plastic film as the sole carbon source, reaching maximum conversion to CO2 and biomass in around 15 days. The consortium degrades the polymer synergistically, with different degradation steps being performed by different community members. We identify six putative PETase-like enzymes and four putative MHETase-like enzymes, with the potential to degrade aliphatic-aromatic polymers and their degradation products, respectively. Our results show that, although there are multiple genes and organisms with the potential to perform each degradation step, only a few are active during biodegradation.

Selective carbon sources influence the end products of microbial nitrate respiration

Respiratory and catabolic genes are differentially distributed across microbial genomes. Thus, specific carbon sources may favor different respiratory processes. We profiled the influence of 94 carbon sources on the end products of nitrate respiration in microbial enrichment cultures from diverse terrestrial environments. We found that some carbon sources consistently favor dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA/nitrate ammonification) while other carbon sources favor nitrite accumulation or denitrification. For an enrichment culture from aquatic sediment, we sequenced the genomes of the most abundant strains, matched these genomes to 16S rDNA exact sequence variants (ESVs), and used 16S rDNA amplicon sequencing to track the differential enrichment of functionally distinct ESVs on different carbon sources. We found that changes in the abundances of strains with different genetic potentials for nitrite accumulation, DNRA or denitrification were correlated with the nitrite or ammonium concentrations in the enrichment cultures recovered on different carbon sources. Specifically, we found that either L-sorbose or D-cellobiose enriched for a Klebsiella nitrite accumulator, other sugars enriched for an Escherichia nitrate ammonifier, and citrate or formate enriched for a Pseudomonas denitrifier and a Sulfurospirillum nitrate ammonifier. Our results add important nuance to the current paradigm that higher concentrations of carbon will always favor DNRA over denitrification or nitrite accumulation, and we propose that, in some cases, carbon composition can be as important as carbon concentration in determining nitrate respiratory end products. Furthermore, our approach can be extended to other environments and metabolisms to characterize how selective parameters influence microbial community composition, gene content, and function.

Rapid detection of E. coli O157:H7 by a novel access with combination of improved sample preparation and real-time PCR.

Foodborne bacteria are typically present at very low concentrations in food. This study describes a quick and simple method for concentrating E. coli O157:H7 present in lettuce and cabbage, without microbial enrichment culture. This method involved reducing the extraction buffer and DNA elution volumes. The extraction buffer volume was adjusted to 225, 100, 50, 25, and 12.5mL to isolate E. coli O157:H7 from 25g of lettuce or cabbage. DNA was concentrated and compared using real-time PCR. When using 12.5mL of buffer, < 4CFU/g of E. coli O157:H7 could be detected within 2h without enrichment. This result is 100-fold sensitive than pretreatment with of the conventional method using 225mL. It is suggested that this method could contribute to the prevention of food poisoning accidents in institutional catering settings, such as schools or military facilities, by the rapid and sensitive detection of pathogens without special equipment prior to food consumption stages.

Determination of the potential of pickle wastewater as feedstock for biopolymer production.

Food industry wastewater (FIWW) streams with high organic content are among the most suitable and inexpensive candidates for polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) biopolymer production. Due to its high organic acid content, pickle industry wastewater (PIWW), can be considered as one of the prospective alternatives to petroleum-based polymers for PHA production. In this context, this study aimed to investigate the production of PHA with enriched microbial culture using PIWW. Two laboratory scale sequencing batch reactors (SBRs) were operated under aerobic dynamic feeding conditions at a sludge retention time of 8 days, with a total cycle duration of 24 hours. SBRs were fed with peptone mixture and PIWW. In-cycle analysis and batch respirometric tests were performed to evaluate PHA storage together with biodegradation kinetics. In-cycle analysis showed that maximum PHA content was 1,820 mgCOD/L, corresponding to 44% in the biomass (ratio of chemical oxygen demand (COD) to volatile suspended solids) for PIWW. Experimental results were also confirmed with activated sludge model simulations. As for the PHA composition, hydroxybutyrate was the major fraction. Model simulations proposed a unique conversion-degradation-storage pathway for the organic acid mixture. This paper presents a novel insight for better understanding of PHA biopolymer production using high saline FIWW.

Effectiveness of enriched microbial culture under mesophilic and thermophilic condition in palm oil mill effluent for anaerobic digestion of Brachiaria mutica

In this study, we investigated the effectiveness of microbial enrichment in enhancing the anaerobic digestion of lignocellulosic biomass of anaerobically digested sewage sludge in a complex substrate under both mesophilic (305 K) and thermophilic (328 K) conditions. Palm oil mill effluent (POME) was used as the enrichment culture, and Brachiaria mutica (paragrass) as a representative of a lignocellulosic biomass with relatively low lignin content (ca. 10 wt%). The microbial enrichment was found to increase the hydrolytic activities of the sludge more than twofold, and to increase the bacterial diversity, especially under the mesophilic condition. The microbial enrichment was also found to increase the diversity of methanogenic archaea and the methanogenic activities of the sludge. When compared with the original sludge, the enriched microbial culture under the mesophilic condition increased the methane yield from 275 to 312 cm3 STP/g VS added. However, despite increased hydrolytic, acetogenic and methanogenic activities, the enriched microbial culture under the thermophilic condition failed to enhance methane production in a long-term anaerobic digestion of paragrass.

Microbial Enrichment Culture Responsible for the Complete Oxidative Biodegradation of 3-Amino-1,2,4-triazol-5-one (ATO), the Reduced Daughter Product of the Insensitive Munitions Compound 3-Nitro-1,2,4-triazol-5-one (NTO).

3-Nitro-1,2,4-triazol-5-one (NTO) is one of the main ingredients of many insensitive munitions, which are being used as replacements for conventional explosives. As its use becomes widespread, more research is needed to assess its environmental fate. Previous studies have shown that NTO is biologically reduced to 3-amino-1,2,4-triazol-5-one (ATO). However, the final degradation products of ATO are still unknown. We have studied the aerobic degradation of ATO by enrichment cultures derived from the soil. After multiple transfers, ATO degradation was monitored in closed bottles through measurements of inorganic carbon and nitrogen species. The results indicate that the members of the enrichment culture utilize ATO as the sole source of carbon and nitrogen. As ATO was mineralized to CO2, N2, and NH4+, microbial growth was observed in the culture. Co-substrates addition did not increase the ATO degradation rate. Quantitative polymerase chain reaction analysis revealed that the organisms that enriched using ATO as carbon and nitrogen source were Terrimonas spp., Ramlibacter-related spp., Mesorhizobium spp., Hydrogenophaga spp., Ralstonia spp., Pseudomonas spp., Ectothiorhodospiraceae, and Sphingopyxis. This is the first study to report the complete mineralization of ATO by soil microorganisms, expanding our understanding of natural attenuation and bioremediation of the explosive NTO.

Bioelectrochemical Systems for Groundwater Remediation: The Development Trend and Research Front Revealed by Bibliometric Analysis

: Due to the deficiency of fresh water resources and the deterioration of groundwater quality worldwide, groundwater remedial technologies are especially crucial for preventing groundwater pollution and protecting the precious groundwater resource. Among the remedial alternatives, bioelectrochemical systems have unique advantages on both economic and technological aspects. However, it is rare to see a deep study focused on the information mining and visualization of the publications in this field, and research that can reveal and visualize the development trajectory and trends is scarce. Therefore, this study summarizes the published information in this field from the Web of Science Core Collection of the last two decades (1999–2018) and uses Citespace to quantitatively visualize the relationship of authors, published countries, organizations, funding sources, and journals and detect the research front by analyzing keywords and burst terms. The results indicate that the studies focused on bioelectrochemical systems for groundwater remediation have had a significant increase during the last two decades, especially in China, Germany and Italy. The national research institutes and universities of the USA and the countries mentioned above dominate the research. Environmental Science &amp; Technology, Applied and Environmental Microbiology, and Water Research are the most published journals in this field. The network maps of the keywords and burst terms suggest that reductive microbial diversity, electron transfer, microbial fuel cell, etc., are the research hotspots in recent years, and studies focused on microbial enrichment culture, energy supply/recovery, combined pollution remediation, etc., should be enhanced in future.
