Assessing Student Satisfaction with the eBook 'Database All About': A Survey of DTK Students at Politeknik Sultan Azlan Shah

This study evaluates student satisfaction with the eBook Database All About, a resource developed for Diploma in Electronic Engineering (Computer) (DTK) students at Politeknik Sultan Azlan Shah. Prior to the introduction of this eBook, students relied on lecturers’ notes and slides, which were not standardized and often resulted in difficulties in covering and understanding the subject matter. This gap led to challenges in exam performance. With the aid of the eBook, students now benefit from clearer explanations, attractive illustrations, and compact notes for each topic. The inclusion of sample questions in each chapter also aids exam preparation. This study investigates the eBook’s effectiveness, focusing on its content, usability, and impact on learning. Results indicate high satisfaction levels, and future data from additional polytechnics will provide a clearer picture of its overall impact.

Characteristics of the implant used in ophthalmology

The purpose of work was a scientific analysis of lenticular implant intraocular applied in ophthalmology. Lenses of the Alcon Laboratories company were used for surveys. Spectrophotometric, macroscopic and roentgenographic examinations were conducted. The aim of the study was to determine as much information as possible about the analyzed implants using engineering and research methods. The evaluation was carried out as part of an engineering diploma thesis. As a result of the obtained research results, it was found that the applied techniques allow for the correct evaluation of the tested materials.

Analysis of program outcomes attainment for diploma in civil engineering at Universiti Teknologi MARA Pahang

Analysis of program outcomes involves the assessment of the learning objectives based on cognitive, psychomotor, and affective domains and their attainment is measured using both direct and indirect approaches. This study aims to assess the program outcomes attainment for the civil engineering diploma program at Universiti Teknologi MARA Pahang. The program outcomes attainment in this study was obtained from two categories of students based on cohort 20174 using the Plan ID 6541, namely i) 257 graduated on-time students and ii) 365 overall students including extended students. The attainments were analyzed quantitatively using key performance indicators for each program outcome and program performance indicators for the overall attainment of program outcomes. Based on the key performance indicator, the results reveal that nine program outcomes are indicated as excellent while three program outcomes are indicated as good. Meanwhile, based on the program performance indicator, this cohort is indicated as well performed where 9 out of 12 program outcomes recorded above 70% average attainment. Various effective continuous quality improvement (CQI) program can be identified by the school’s committee based on these findings to further enhance the program outcomes attainment.

Prospects of Employing Graduates of Computer Science and Technology Diploma Programs in Asir Region, Saudi Arabia: An Analysis for the Period 2019-2023

This paper aims to explore and analyze the employment processes of graduates from computer science diploma programs in Saudi Arabia during the period from 2020 to 2023. This paper employed a quantitative research approach and utilize the survey method to collect data. The survey instrument designed to address the research objectives and questions outlined earlier. The collected survey data was analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) software. The target population for this study comprises all graduates of computer science and technology diploma programs in the Asir Region of Saudi Arabia for the period from 2019 to 2023. Since it is not feasible to survey the entire population, a representative sample of 60 participants had been selected using a random sampling technique. The results indicate that there are 42 (70%) who are Employed, there are 10 (16.7%) who are Self-Employed, and there are only 8 (13.3%) who are Unemployed. Which indicates that Graduates of Computer Science and Technology Diploma Programs in Asir Region, Saudi Arabia have higher probabilities to be employed. There are 19 (31.7%) who were graduated in 2019 and 2020, and there are 10 (16.7%) who were graduated in 2022. While there are 9 (15%) who were graduated in 2023. And there are only 3 (5%) who were graduated in 2021. there are 26 (43.3%) who are Employed in Public Sector, there are 20 (33.3%) who are Employed in private Sector, there are 6 (10%) who are Employed in mixed Sector (public and private), and there are only 8 (13.3%) who are Unemployed. Which indicates that private sector faces greater challenges in employing computer science program graduates compared to the public sector.

Challenges in Online Practical Learning Among Engineering Diploma Students: A Case Study at Kuching Polytechnic During the COVID-19 Pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted education system across the world and caused changes in how schools conduct their daily activities. As a result, practical learning among polytechnic students has shifted to an online mode of delivery. This research investigated the challenges faced by engineering students at Kuching Polytechnic Sarawak during online practical learning and their stress levels. Online survey using quantitative approach was adopted inn this research to identify the challenges and students’ stress levels during the online practical learning. A total of 335 engineering studentswere selected using simple random sampling method. The research found that the smartphone is a modern device used by students frequently, while videos from YouTube sourceswere commonly used as a teaching material by the lecturers. This study also found out that the challenge and the engineering students’ stress level are at a moderate level, and there was no significant difference in the stress level between male and female students. Nevertheless, this research discovered that there was a significant relationship between the stress level and the student challenges during online practical learning. The present findings suggest that students should take these challenges as opportunities to explore a more innovative way of learning to ensure their engagement in online practical learning is more effective. Besides, lecturers should integrate educational technology into online practical learning in order to make the learning process more engaging and adaptive. On top of that, the findings also recommend that the Ministry of Higher Education should formulate a strategy to improve the infrastructure and provide specific training for TVET lecturersto enhance their pedagogical competency in online practical teaching in engineering education. This aspect requires further research to ensure that online practical learning is not regarded as an obstacle for both students and lecturers.

The Efficiency of Final Semester Examination Simulation Method in Achieving At Least 20 Marks: A Case Study on Engineering Mathematics 2 Students at Politeknik Kuching Sarawak

The aim of this research is to identify the effectiveness of using the Final Semester Examination Simulation Method in achieving at least 20 marks in the final semester examination. The study focuses on quantitative measurements and employs numerical data. The comparison shows that out of the 10 programs involved, only 1 program shows a decrease in the achievement of the mark, which is the Diploma In Mechanical Engineering (Air Conditioning And Refrigeration) (DPU) programme. This suggests that the method has been effective in helping students achieve at least 20% in the Final Examination. To maintain and enhance the success of the method, it's important to continue monitoring and evaluating its impact on student performance.

Exploring Teaching and Learning Physics in Engineering Institutions of Kathmandu District

Being a physics educator for the last two decades, the first author of this paper observed some disturbing scenarios in the educational landscape of diploma in engineering in physics theory portion. Students' academic achievements in the physics final examination conducted by Council for Technical Education and Vocational Training (CTEVT) indicated that many failed to fulfill the minimum requirements to pass the final exam or gain good grades. In addition, most students could not apply the physics principles in real-world contexts. The purpose of this study was to explore teaching and learning practices in physics theory classrooms of Kathmandu district-based diploma in engineering schools affiliated to CTEVT. The study employed a qualitative research design and was underpinned by the social constructivist learning theory. Ethnography as a research method was employed in which participant observation and unstructured interviews were used as the research tools. A purposeful sampling was carried out to conduct the research in which nine students from two engineering institutions were taken as the research participants. Data analysis was carried out by coding the raw data primarily employing N-vivo coding thus creating several categories and finally developing three major themes. The findings indicated that the classroom dialogue didn’t support the social constructivist epistemology. Thus, the findings lead to the conclusion that traditional teacher-centric practices were prevalent at those engineering institutions that might be responsible for the poor academic achievements of students.

A Lean Path for Learning Control in Undergraduate Electronics Programmes

In recent years, the development and spread of machine learning, robotics and other novel application areas, made indispensable to include such topics in undergraduate programmes for students in the area of electrical and computer engineering. However, this entails that traditional subjects must be covered in less time while maintaining their relevant topics for getting an engineering diploma. In this paper, one presents an approach to streamline the learning and teaching of automatic control. As surveyed in the paper, many universities divide the study of control theory in an initial course with system theoretic concepts followed by two other dedicated to linear systems. Various approaches appear on how to divide the topics over these two units. The study of single-input single-output systems defined by differential equations and the study of transfer functions can be argued to be mainly rooted on the need to introduce the Proportional Integral Derivative (PID) controller. In this paper, motivated by the concept of differential observation, we propose a new organization of the control curricula where a first course on systems theory gathers all relevant general tools and a second course, specific to automatic control, presents both continuous and discrete-time linear control systems in the state-space formulation together with ways to get working control systems in face of actuator saturation, measurement noise and parametric uncertainty. In this approach, PID controllers are presented as a special case of state feedback. The structure can also be useful for Universities developing their curricula in countries where control theory teaching is still being developed.

Performance of Students in Solid Mechanics Course and the Role of Fundamental Courses for Engineering Diploma Programme

This study investigates student performance in Solid Mechanics in a Civil Engineering diploma program in Malaysia that uses Outcome-Based Education (OBE). The study evaluates the association between fundamental course performance and success in Solid Mechanics, using data from 72 students. The study takes a mixed-methods approach that includes grade distribution analysis and assessment component evaluation. Tests and assignments each contribute for 20% of the total score and the final exam accounting for 60% of the total score of Solid Mechanics. Students scored an average of 50.4% on the test evaluation, 81.8% on the assignment and 51.9% on the final exam. The results show an 80.6% of total 72 students pass in Solid Mechanics, with a bell-shaped grade distribution that is somewhat negative. The majority of students received grades in the B to C range, demonstrating adequate course calibration. Individual assessment components had variable success percentages, with 91.7% for assignments, 55.6% for test, and 59.7% for the final exam. Furthermore, the study discovered a connection between performance in foundational courses such as Calculus and Physics with the success in Solid Mechanics. Students with poor Calculus skills were more likely to fail Solid Mechanics, even when they performed quite well in Physics. This finding emphasizes the importance of fundamental courses in understanding and comprehending Solid Mechanics concepts. The study’s findings include the need for focused interventions to assist struggling students and the establishment of early intervention programs. These findings contribute to the increasing body of research on engineering education in Malaysia, providing valuable insights for curriculum design and teaching practices in OBE-based engineering programs.

KAJIAN PENCAPAIAN OBJEKTIF PENDIDIKAN PROGRAM (PROGRAMME EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES – PEO) BAGI PROGRAM DIPLOMA KEJURUTERAAN PERKHIDMATAN BANGUNAN

Education at Malaysian institutes of higher education must be accredited by responsible bodies such as Malaysia Qualification Agency (MQA) and Engineering Technology Accreditation Council (ETAC) to ensure graduates' marketability is guaranteed. Therefore, ETAC asked the program to explain the process for periodic review and review of the Program Educational Objectives (PEO) to determine the extent to which industry is involved in the careers of the graduates who are working with them. There are two objectives to be achieved which are to identify the alumni's perception of the achievement of the Program Educational Objectives (PEO) and to determine the level of achievement of each PEO that has been achieved by the alumni. The target for this study is a total of 35 graduates who followed the Building Services Engineering Diploma program at Kuching Sarawak Polytechnic who have graduated for 5 years. The questionnaire is Google Forms and has been emailed to the graduates involved to be completed. The results of the study found that the students' perception of all PEO programs is very good with an achievement score of 90 and above. Where the level of achievement of PEO 2 which is to be a leader or team member to support their role in the industry is the highest among the four PEOs.

EXAMINING THE ACHIEVEMENT OF COURSE AND PROGRAM OUTCOMES FOR THE STRENGTH OF MATERIALS COURSE DURING THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC

The pandemic due to Covid-19 in 2020 had a substantial impact on teaching and learning of educational courses, including lectures, labs, workshops, and assessments. In this study, Strength of Materials course was selected in analyzing the achievement of program and course outcomes during the pandemic. This course is a mechanical engineering core course for all students enrolling Diploma in Mechanical Engineering at Universiti Teknologi MARA, Penang Branch. Three course outcomes were mapped to three program outcomes respectively. The findings revealed that there were variations in the attainment of all course outcomes particularly the outcome related to higher cognitive domain. Therefore, it can be concluded that the pandemic has influenced the overall achievement of course and program outcomes in Strength of Materials course.

Semantic Similarity Analysis for Examination Questions Classification Using WordNet

Question classification based on Bloom’s Taxonomy (BT) has been widely accepted and used as a guideline in designing examination questions in many institutions of higher learning. The misclassification of questions may happen when the classification task is conducted manually due to a discrepancy in the understanding of BT by academics. Hence, several automated examination question classification systems have been proposed by researchers to perform question classification accurately. Most of this research has focused on specific subject areas only or single-sentence type questions. There has been a lack of research on question classification for multi-sentence type and multi-subject questions. This paper proposes a question classification system (QCS) to perform the examination of question classification using a semantic and synthetic approach. The questions were taken from various subjects of an engineering diploma course, and the questions were either single- or multiple-sentence types. The QCS was developed using a natural language toolkit (NLTK), Stanford POS tagger (SPOS), Stanford parser’s universal dependencies (UD), and WordNet similarity approaches. The QCS used the NLTK to process the questions into sentences and then word tokens, such as SPOS, to tag the word tokens and UD to identify the important word tokens, which were the verbs of the examination questions. The identified verbs were then compared with the BT’s verbs list in terms of word sense using the WordNet similarity approach before finally classifying the questions according to BT. The developed QCS achieved an overall 83% accuracy in the classification of a set of 200 examination questions, according to BT.

Evaluation of EXTVT PROST DKA Application for Civil Engineering Diploma Program, Sultan Azlan Shah Polytechnic

The Internet of Things (IOT) technology is a concept of communication networks through the internet and communication equipment such as mobile phones, computers, tablets and others that parallel the concept of Mobile Learning (M-Learning) which is increasingly being adapted in teaching and learning systems ( PdP). Various online applications that have been developed in line with Industrial Revolution 4.0 and to facilitate the PdP process especially in the Final Year Project (FYP) course. FYP courses require students to access project-related information quickly and easily anywhere. Therefore, the EXTVT PROST DKA application has been developed for the purpose of facilitating the distribution of information between students, supervisors, coordinators and panels in addition to providing a platform in the search for reference sources for student projects. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the EXTVT PROST DKA application developed for the DCC40181 – Final Year Project, Civil Engineering Diploma course. The study respondents are semester four (4) students who took the DCC40181 course in the December 2020 Session, Session 1 2021/2022 and Session 2 2021/2022. The study uses an online questionnaire instrument provided through google form. This research instrument is divided into 3 parts namely application design, application usability and user satisfaction. The reliability test (Reliability Test) on 20 questionnaire items obtained a Cronbach's alpha value of 0.964. Then the evaluation of the application continues by distributing the questionnaire link to the students. The results of mean score analysis from 97 respondents found that all items were within the estimated mean score of 4.29 to 4.45. Overall, the study found that the EXTVT PROST DKA application was very helpful in the implementation of the Final Year Project among Civil Engineering Diploma students.

Implementation of Work-Based Learning Among Electrical Engineering Diploma Students in an Electric Utility Company

Engineering students graduating from a higher education institution (HEI) are expected to have hands-on experience to be relevance in employment. Work-Based Learning (WBL) is defined as a learning method that engages or includes students in real-world employment so that they may learn the needs of job competencies, experience the job culture first-hand, and uncover career options. Industrial training (IT) is a work-based learning approach required of engineering students as part of their diploma courses. Implementation of IT with duration of 18 weeks was employed for 27 students Diploma in Electrical Engineering students. Students undergo fields rotation with different appointed supervisors throughout the IT period. The IT that was implemented enabled students to obtain important industrial exposure. Industrial visitation at a coal power plant was arranged to give additional industrial exposure to the students. Oral presentation at the end of the course, logbook and final report submission are assessed by assigned supervisors and lecturers for evaluation of each student. The study has offered insights into current IT implementation as well as some suggestions for the future implementation. To track the institution's IT implementation, the study should be applied to the following cohorts.

Psychological Well-Being Among Medical Laboratory Technology Educators at A Higher Institution in Malaysia

Effective teaching and learning strategies are one of the most important factors in achieving any educational institution's mission and vision. However, to ensure teaching and learning methods are relevant to the curriculum, which is very challenging and complex, educators' psychological well-being plays a vital role in supporting all planning and whatever goals are to be achieved by educational institutions. This study was to explore the views and perceptions of educators from higher educational institutions offering a Medical Laboratory Technology Diploma Program with regards to the contributing factors to psychological well-being. This study employed a qualitative, semi-structured interview to collect data from three selected participants. The data was thoroughly analysed in several procedures before being reported. This study revealed five themes of contributing factors to educators' psychological well-being by sharing relevant perspectives, challenges, and strategies for overcoming them.

Transformation of Delivery and Assessment for Laboratory Course During Covid-19 Pandemic: The Case Study of Soil Engineering Laboratory

Due to the spread of the COVID-19, many universities throughout the world are experiencing partial or complete disruptions to their academic programmes. As a result, more and more institutions are making the essential changes to their instruction in teaching and learning processes, including laboratory classes from face to face into a hybrid or online delivery format. Regardless of the actions done, lecturers must keep up their rigorous academic standards and offer a top-notch student as necessary for delivering the learning outcomes linked to courses especially laboratory courses that normally being conducted face to face in the laboratory or workshop to online or open distance learning (ODL). This transformation will present a challenge to academicians across the higher education sector, forcing them to switch from normal class delivery to online instruction and various laboratory delivery strategies. Students as a result will not receiving direct instruction from lecturers, and they have limited or no access at all to laboratory resources that necessary for delivering the learning outcomes linked to each programme courses. This paper reviews approaches taken by Faculty of Civil Engineering, UiTM and lecturers to deliver teaching and laboratory practices remotely, in consideration of the COVID-19 pandemic. This review is primarily focused on implementation on teaching delivery and laboratory assessments given to Civil Engineering Diploma Students in Soil Engineering Laboratory Course during COVID outbreaks. The findings of this study may be used to improve online engineering education during and after pandemics in other institutions or courses with a similar demographic.

A Comparison of Psychomotor Domain Assessment in Water Engineering Laboratory between F2F and ODL

Pandemic has changed teaching, learning and assessment (TLA) methods in conducting remote learning during open distance learning (ODL). This scenario has switched physical learning to virtual learning worldwide including UiTM. Ideally it has a positive impact in the academic landscape, however there are challenges for technical programmes which assess psychomotor domain including Diploma in Civil Engineering at UiTM Pasir Gudang. This paper is a preliminary study to compare the student performance before pandemic (Sept 2019-Jan 2020) and during pandemic (Sept 2020- Jan 2021) in addressing psychomotor domain for laboratory courses (water engineering laboratory). Result shows a positive impact on student performance during ODL. However, there is a flaw and weakness in assessing psychomotor domain during ODL. Hence monitoring on TLA should be done for the betterment of TLA for future and continual quality improvement (CQI) is necessary to ensure the quality of teaching for laboratory courses.
