IEEE IAS/IES/PELS Serbia Joint Chapter Organizes Ph.D. Students Workshop

On 16 December 2022, the IEEE Industry Applications Society (IAS)/Industrial Electronics Society (IES)/Power Electronics Society (PELS) Serbia Joint Chapter organized and hosted the first Ph.D. students workshop with the topic “Research Trends in Power Engineering, Power Electronics, and Applied Computing at the Faculty of Technical Sciences” and consisted of short presentations and extensive discussions. The goal was to bring doctoral students together and to show the latest directions for their research.

Professional Author's Training Methods Computer-Graphic Modeling for Participants of the Advanced Engineering School

The article presents a research view on the features of the organization of the process of teaching computer-graphic modeling for participants in the educational process within the framework of an advanced engineering school. It is shown that this direction is not innovative and the creative teams of university engineering schools have already gained some experience in quickly solving typical problems in the process of advanced training of a highly qualified specialist. At the same time, the authors of the article draw attention to circumstances that significantly limit the achievement of ambitious goals pursued in the implementation of pilot educational programs. The application of the participants of the advanced engineering school to bridge the gap between theory and practice looks especially declarative, given that the formation of even basic skills (spatial thinking) for many members of elite engineering training groups requires significant time costs. Today, in Russian universities, this problem is solved by traditional methodological methods as part of the teaching of the discipline "Engineering Geometry and Computer Graphics". The author's methods of teaching computer-graphic modeling outlined in the article are addressed to innovative teachers who realistically assess their capabilities when developing their own design educational products for students who have made a conscious choice in favor of an advanced engineering school. The article was written based on the results of approbation of the author's pedagogical initiatives in the educational process of the university (Perm Polytechnic University).

Dissipative quantum computation and quantum state preparation based on BEC qubits

Among environmental effects, dissipation allows the stabilization of quantum resources, a fact that may accomplish key advantages over unitary quantum state manipulation. In this paper, we study an open quantum system composed ofNtwo-mode Bose–Einstein condensates (BECs), namely, BEC qubits, interacting with their environments. Usually, the coupling of a system with its environment results in a dissipation process that washes out the quantum effects, but the environment may also play exactly the opposite role. Here, we show that the coupling of a BEC qubit with its local environments can be exploited to establish dissipative state engineering and dissipative quantum computation. Also, we discuss how to generate entanglement and transfer it using such macroscopic BEC qubits. Generally, the couplings can be manipulated such that the system is driven to a desired steady state. We demonstrate that the steady state of a BEC qubit just depends on the tunneling strength between its two modes and the features of the local environments. By preparing the proper physical conditions and adjusting the parameters involved in the model, it can be shown that the steady state of the system may coincide with its initial state. Also, the interaction between the BEC qubits and local environments can be engineered to provide physically controlled single- and two-qubit operations, which are necessary for performing dissipative universal quantum computation. With the prosperous development of quantum computing, such a system can be employed to implement quantum computers based on non-unitary operations.

Research on privacy protection of intelligent construction

With the application of new generation intelligent technologies such as big data, cloud computing and numerical simulation in engineering, the level of intelligent construction has been gradually improved. In the development process of intelligent construction, it faces many problems, such as new technology, safety, human recognition and so on. This paper studies the privacy protection of intelligent construction, analyses the causes of privacy disclosure on the basis of information classification, and then puts forward privacy protection methods. The research shows that the privacy security of intelligent construction needs to clarify the scope and formulate effective protection strategies.

Scrum: A Systematic Literature Review

This study presents a Systematic Literature Review on an agile project management tool. The study offers a brief comparison between traditional and agile project management methodologies. Their respective concepts and characteristics are laid out to highlight and explain their main differences. The agile methods include quantitative and qualitative data, showing Scrum framework characteristics. This study highlights the importance of project management in function of its emergence as a response to problems encountered during improperly conducted projects. Furthermore, this study provides relevant information for professionals in the Industrial Engineering area and computer science. The results allowed us to conclude that Scrum is an agile framework for empirical-based project development; it was developed in the 1990s by Jeff Sutherland. It is a flexible and adaptable methodology. Scrum research peaked in 2020, and continues to be studied, mainly in the field of computer science. Finally, Brazil is well-positioned in third place for works published.

Mathematical Chemistry Approaches for Computer-Aid Design of Free-Shaped Structures in Architecture and Construction Engineering

The use of computers in architecture and construction engineering simplifies and automatize many manual operations, especially in the case of curved surfaces such as shell structures. Moreover, it allows fast screening and characterization of many technical solutions through computer-solving equations and the verification of buildings and metallic structures stabilities in different weather and seismic conditions. In parallel, significant efforts have been made to characterize and explore carbon-based nanosystems. Important mathematical concepts and methods were developed for the description of such structures in the frame of mathematical chemistry. Because the lattice topology of shell structures in architecture and nanosystems in chemistry are similar, it is possible to transfer well-established theoretical concepts and knowledge of using nanosystems to the design of shell structures. The topologies of the nanosystems are characterized by lower densities of edges per node offering better solutions for curved surfaces than the typical grids used in architecture. As far as we know, no such connections between the topologies of nanosystems and shell structures have been established before. This transfer would be helpful for increased accuracy and speed in finding the best technical solutions for the building’s design. In this paper, we identify and propose for the design of the shell structures several mathematical approaches developed for atomistic systems.

Graduate acoustics education in the Cockrell School of Engineering at The University of Texas at Austin

While graduate study in acoustics takes place in several colleges and schools at The University of Texas at Austin (UT Austin), including Communication, Fine Arts, Geosciences, and Natural Sciences, this poster focuses on the acoustics program in Engineering. The core of this program resides in the Departments of Mechanical Engineering (ME) and Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE). Acoustics faculty in each department supervise graduate students in both departments. One undergraduate and nine graduate acoustics courses are taught in ME and ECE. Instructors for these courses include staff at Applied Research Laboratories at UT Austin, where many of the graduate students have research assistantships. The undergraduate course, taught every fall, begins with basic physical acoustics and proceeds to draw examples from different areas of engineering acoustics. Three of the graduate courses are taught every year: a two course sequence on physical acoustics, and a transducers course. The remaining six graduate acoustics courses, taught in alternate years, are on nonlinear acoustics, underwater acoustics, ultrasonics, architectural acoustics, wave phenomena, and acoustic metamaterials. An acoustics seminar is held most Fridays during the long semesters, averaging over ten per semester since 1984. The ME and ECE departments both offer Ph.D. qualifying exams in acoustics.

3D ion gyro-orbit heat load predictions for NSTX-U

High power tokamaks operate with divertor heat loads capable of destroying the plasma facing components (PFCs). High fidelity heat load predictions are necessary to ascertain the PFC state for design and during operation. Typical heat flux calculations are 2D, time invariant, and assume that power flows directly along the magnetic field lines (the optical approximation). These assumptions neglect the complex 3D geometries employed to protect the PFCs, the time varying nature of the plasma and PFC thermal state, and the helical trajectories of ions with finite Larmor radii (the gyro-orbit approximation). An integrated software framework, the heat flux engineering analysis toolkit (HEAT), was developed to generate time varying optical heat loads applied to real engineering computer aided design (CAD) (Looby et al 2022 Fusion Sci. Technol. 78 10–27). Recently, an ion-gyro orbit module has been added to HEAT. This module calculates the helical trajectories of ions as they gyrate about the magnetic field lines using kinetic theory macro-particles to accelerate the calculation. First, the new gyro-orbit module will be presented. Next, a comparison to existing research is performed. Finally, an analysis of the gyro-orbit heat loads for NSTX-U is presented for diverted discharges using the engineering CAD models utilized for PFC fabrication. Including these gyro-orbit effects can enhance the PFC performance by ‘smearing’ out the magnetic shadows associated with the castellated fish-scaled geometry. Simultaneously, the helical trajectories can degrade performance when they load narrow regions on edges and corners with high heat fluxes. Analysis of the trade-offs between these competing effects is included, and regions for further investigation are identified.

The Art of Teaching Professional Practice: An Action Research Methodology Inspired by Ulrich's Systems Concepts.

Learning the art of any professional practice like engineering design or computer programming is a challenge for students and adds to the complexity of teaching such a technical discipline. Institutional regulations, along with industry expectations, increase the burden on the educator to develop a successful instructional environment. Critical systems thinking provides practitioners, in general, with a framework for understanding interrelation and complexities in a variety of problem situations. The art of systems thinking requires discourse on both the interdependencies, and multiple perspectives present in a problem situation. However, little guidance exists for educators in applying the concepts of critical systems thinking in their everyday practice of teaching a professional practice module at university level. This paper suggests a methodology based on action research and critical systems thinking concepts, to incorporate the art of systems thinking in the teaching of a professional practice module. The phases of action research are described from the critical systems perspective of Ulrich, in order to provide guidelines for an educator to embrace the complexity of professional practice education. Programming is used as a demonstration of the proposed methodology. The methodology incorporates systems thinking aspects such as the totality of conditioned realities, boundary critique, and acting as a witness sensitive to polemical argumentation on behalf of the affected. It demonstrates how Ulrich’s approach involves - and respects - all stakeholders in a system and guides the individual educator to excel in teaching a professional practice module. By making a conscious effort to listen to the affected and to incorporate as many conditioned realities as possible, the educator should be able to improve student engagement, resulting in better skills. We provide a demonstration of the art of teaching a professional practice module methodology which enables the educator to develop the programming skills of students in a complex environment.

Multirate DAE-simulation and its application in system simulation software for the development of electric vehicles

This work is devoted to the efficient simulation of large multi-physical networks stemming from automated modelling processes in system simulation software. The simulation of hybrid, battery and fuel cell electric vehicle applications requires the coupling of electrical, mechanical, fluid, and thermal networks. Each network is established by combining the connection structure of a graph with physical equations of elementary components and resulting in a DAE (differential algebraic equation). To speed up the simulation a non-iterative multirate time integration co-simulation method for the system of coupled DAEs is established. The power of the multirate method is shown via two representative examples of battery powered electric vehicle with a cooling system for the battery pack and a three phase inverter with a cooling system. This work is an extended version of (Kolmbauer et al. in Scientific Computing in Electrical Engineering (SCEE 2020), Springer, Cham, pp. 231–240, 2021).

Numerical modeling of the propagation process of landslide surge using physics-informed deep learning

The landslide surge is a common secondary disaster of reservoir bank landslides, which can cause more serious damage than the landslide itself in many cases. With the development of large-scale scientific and engineering computing, many new techniques have been applied to the study of hydrodynamic problems to make up for the shortcomings of traditional methods. In this paper, we use the physics-informed neural network (PINN) to simulate the propagation process of surges caused by landslides. We study different characteristics of landslide surges by changing water depth and particle density. We find that: (1) the landslide surge propagation process simulation method based on the physics-informed neural network has good applicability, and the stages of landslide surge propagation can be well presented; (2) the depth of water influences the landslide surge propagation as the amplitude of the surge increases with deeper water; (3) the particle density of water influences the landslide surge propagation as the fluctuation of the surge is more obvious with larger particle density. Our study is helpful to understand the propagation process of landslide surges more clearly and provides new ideas for the follow-up study of this kind of complex fluid–structure interaction problem.

2022 International Conference on Advanced Electronics, Electrical and Green Energy (AEEGE 2022) is sponsored by The International Society for Applied Computing (ISAC) and Technical Institute for Engineers (T.I.E.).AEEGE 2022 is intended as an international forum to bring together academicians, scientists, engineers, and researchers working in the fields of Advanced Electronics, Electrical and Green Energy to exchange views, share their expertise, experience and research results, and discuss the challenges and future directions in their specialized areas.Currently, the entire world is struggling against the virulent pandemic COVID-19. Unfortunately, each of us is affected, either overtly or covertly. Our conference, 2022 International Conference on Advanced Electronics, Electrical and Green Energy (AEEGE 2022) is not an exception. To actively respond the call of the government, to strengthen the protection work, to effectively reduce people gathering and prevent coronavirus transmission, AEEGE 2022 which should be held in Chongqing, China during May 20-22, 2022 as planned has been changed as online conference. During the conference, the invited renowned professors have shared with us the recent innovations in the fields of Advanced Electronics, Electrical and Green Energy. For each Keynote Speaker, they have 40-45min to give the Keynote Speech and there are 5-10min for the Q&A. For author presenters, there are 10-15min (including Q&A) for them to make the presentations based on their research papers.AEEGE 2022 received 86 manuscripts and after the double-blind peer review procedures, the program committee accepted 35 papers to be published in conference proceedings. We used ZOOM to hold our virtual conference this time and there are 38 participants who have attended our online conference and most of them are from mainland China, while a few of them are from abroad. Although we have encountered some technical issues during our online conference, such as the audio system problem, we have held our conference successfully. It is really a pity that we cannot hold our conference in Chongqing, China due to the COVID-19, however we hope we could meet and cooperate with each other face to face in our future conferences.We would like to express our sincere gratitude to all the individuals who have contributed to AEEGE 2022.
