Portable visual assay of Bacillus anthracis biomarker based on ligand-functionalized dual-emission lanthanide metal-organic frameworks and smartphone-integrated mini-device

A single-functionalized ligand single-Ln3+ based dual-emission Ln-MOF fluorescent sensor was established for portable and visual dipicolinic acid (DPA, Bacillus anthracis biomarker) detection. First, a theory calculation-based prediction model was developed for designing single-functionalized ligand single-Ln3+ dual-emission Ln-MOFs. The model consisted of three calculation modules: intramolecular hydrogen bonds, excited state energy levels, and coordination stability with Ln3+ of ligands. Tb3+ and Eu3+ were selected as metal luminescence centers, PTA-X (PTA: p-phthalic acid, X = NH2, CH3, H, OH) with different functional groups as one-step functionalization ligands, and the luminescent feature of four Tb-MOFs and four Eu-MOFs was predicted with the model. Coupled with prediction results and experimental verification results, Tb-PTA-OH was rapidly determined to be the sole dual-emission Ln-MOF. Then, Tb-PTA-OH was applied to DPA detection by ratiometric fluorescence, and an ultra-low limit of detection (13.4 nM) was obtained, which is much lower than the lowest anthrax infectious dose (60 μM). A portable visual assay method based on paper-microchip and smartphone integrated mini-device was further established (limit of qualification 0.48 μM). A new sensing mechanism and a "triple gates" selectivity mechanism to DPA were proposed. This work reveals guidelines for material design and mini-device customization in detecting hazardous substances.

Luminescence of Zn-Yb dinuclear Schiff base complex: Enhanced NIR emission by modification with larger conjugated light-harvesting moieties

The fundamental challenge for the highly efficient NIR-luminescence of lanthanides is to identify the suitable chromophores as sensitizer. Herein, the first Salen-type Schiff base ligand modified by conjugated fluorene has been designed to enhance the near-infrared emission of the ytterbium complex. The photophysical properties reveal the potential of the Schiff base dyes as an efficient and strong visible light sensitizer for the lanthanide-based NIR emitters. The modified rigid Schiff base ligand is noted to encapsulate the Ln3+ ions as it prevents the coordination of the solvent molecules, thus, tending to quench the luminescence phenomenon. Due to the intermolecular π-π interactions, the excited state energy levels of ligands are observed to reduce, thus, leading to the highly efficient energy transfer from the triplet state of ligands to the Yb3+ ions. In addition, the shifting of the absorption wavelength of the complex towards low energy (450 nm) makes it suitable for biomedical applications. Further, the ytterbium complex exhibits the highest intrinsic quantum yields (3.68%) among the Salen-type ytterbium complexes.

Study of Charge Symmetry Breaking in A = 4 hypernuclei in √SNN = 3 GeV Au+Au collisions at RHIC

In this paper, we present the measurement of the charge symmetry breaking in A = 4 hypernuclei in Au+Au collisions at √SNN = 3 GeV. The signal reconstruction and binding energy measurement of Λ4H and Λ4He, including corrections and systematic uncertainty evaluation, are discussed. Combined with the energy levels of excited states, our preliminary result of Λ binding energy difference for excited states is ΔBΛ(1+) = −190±130(stat.)±70(syst.) keV which shows a negative value and its magnitude is comparable to the result of ground states ΔBΛ(0+) = 130 ± 130(stat.) ± 70(syst.) keV. These results are compared with previous measurements and theoretical model calculations.

Tuning excited state energy levels by achieving coordination-induced thermally activated delayed fluorescence

In this study, a low steric hindrance D–A type spiro-ligand which possesses long afterglow was used to construct Ag(i) complexes. The excited states energy level is regulated for resulting in tiny ΔEST and efficient TADF through metal coordination.

Carbazolylgold(iii) complexes with thermally activated delayed fluorescence switched on by ligand manipulation as high efficiency organic light-emitting devices with small efficiency roll-offs

A series of carbazolyl ligands has been designed and synthesized through the integration of various electron-donating and electron-accepting motifs, including electron-donating 4-(diphenylamino)aryl and electron-accepting cyano and diphenylphosphine oxide moieties, for the development of a new class of gold(iii) complexes, where the energies of their triplet intraligand and ligand-to-ligand charge transfer excited states can be manipulated for the activation of thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF). Upon excitation, these complexes show high photoluminescence quantum yields of up to 80% in solid-state thin films, with short excited state lifetimes down to 1 μs. Vacuum-deposited and solution-processed organic light-emitting devices based on these complexes demonstrate promising electroluminescence (EL) performance with maximum external quantum efficiencies of 15.0% and 11.7%, respectively, and notably small efficiency roll-off values of less than 1% at the practical luminance brightness level of 1000 cd m−2. These distinct EL performances are believed to be due to the occurrence of multichannel radiative decay pathways via both phosphorescence and TADF that significantly shorten the emission lifetimes and hence reduce the occurrence of the detrimental triplet–triplet annihilation in the gold(iii) complexes.

Two-color resonance enhanced multiphoton ionization spectroscopy of o-hydroxybenzonitrile and Franck-Condon simulation

The cyano group is a typical electron-withdrawing group, which has aroused the interest of relevant researchers. Many papers reported the dispersed fluorescence spectra of o-hydroxybenzonitrile, its dimers, and complexes with small molecules, aiming to study the intermolecule hydrogen bond and the vibration features of the electronic ground state. There are also reports on using fluorescence excitation spectra to study excited state vibrations, but no report on the systematical analyzing of the vibration features of excited state spectra. Compared with fluorescence spectroscopy, resonance enhanced multiphoton ionization (REMPI) spectroscopy detects ions to obtain excited state energy level data, which has mass-resolution capability, and eliminates the interference of impurities with different charge-to-mass ratios. The strong electron-withdrawing ability of cyano group results in higher ionization energy for molecules containing cyano groups. Many REMPI experiments on benzonitrile derivatives require two-color lasers. In this paper, two-color resonance enhanced two-photon ionization experiment is performed by using a home-made linear time-of-flight mass spectrometer, and the vibration-resolved REMPI spectrum of o-hydroxybenzonitrile is obtained for the first time. Combining the high-precision density functional theory calculations with the Franck-Condon spectral simulations, the spectral characteristics are analyzed in detail, and a large number of fundamental, overtone and combined vibrations are found. The spectral assignment is carried out as accurately as possible. Most of the fundamental vibrations located at ring are assigned to the in-plane distortion or swing of the ring, which is related to the expansion of the ring during the molecular excitation. Theoretical and experimental results show that the low-frequency signal of REMPI spectrum is strong, the background is low, the band is less, and the resolution is good. As the vibration frequency increases, the signal changes in the worse direction. This is because the low-frequency spectrum mainly comes from the low-frequency fundamental vibrations and a little contribution from overtones. As the vibration frequency increases, the contributions from overtone and combined vibrations gradually increase, resulting in dense bands and low resolution. Theoretical calculations show that the high-order vibration and combination of multi-mode vibrations usually have a lower Franck-Condon factor, so the signal gradually becomes weak as the frequency increases, and the signal-to-noise ratio becomes worse.

Solvatochromic studies of a newly synthesized schiff base: Estimation of ground and excited state dipole moments

The photophysical characteristics of Schiff base, DHBABA [4-((3, 4-dihydroxybenzylidene) amino) benzoic acid] were investigated in a series of increasing polarity solvents. The absorption and fluorescence spectra of DHBABA in different representative solvents were recorded, and its spectral characteristics were computed. The spectroscopic characteristics, such as absorption maxima (λex), emission maxima (λem), and Stoke shift, were also employed to examine the influence of solvent on DHBABA. The change in solvent polarity displayed considerable red shifts in the fluorescence spectra of DHBABA, when compared to their absorption spectra. These massive spectrum changes show that the solvent polarity had a significant influence on the emission spectra of DHBABA, showing that the singlet excited state energy level was more stable than its ground state equivalent. Further, stokes shift values for DHBABA varied as solvent polarity increased. The substantial variations in Stokes shift values revealed bathochromic (red) shift and ICT owing to the π → π* transition, indicating that the molecules were more stable in polar solvents than non-polar solvents. Gaussian 09 W software was used to compute the atomic charges, frontier molecular orbital energies and dipole moments. The calculations revealed that the dipole moment of the molecule in an excited state is greater than that in a ground state.

"H-Type" Like Constructed Dimer: Another Way to Enhance the Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence Effect.

Thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) materials are an essential part of TADF-based organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). All the reported methods to improve the performance of TADF materials were focused on achieving a high reverse intersystem crossing rate (kRISC) and oscillator strength (f), but most of them were studies on single molecular states. In this paper, we have discovered a new dimer architecture called the "H-type" like dimer and proved that the "H-type" like dimer is another way to improve the performance of TADF materials by calculation and experiment. The calculated energy levels of excited states only provided 1.72-5.46% relative errors (RE) compare with the measured values, which indicated that the methods we chose were suitable for predicting the properties. The intermolecular interactions of the "H-type" like dimer endow it with much larger f and kRISC properties than monomer states, proving that the "H-type" like dimer could improve the performance of TADF emitters.

Plasmon-induced spectral tunability of Perovskite nanowires

In this paper, plasmon-assisted spectral tunability in random media, composed of Perovskite (CsPbBr3) nanowires surrounded by Au nanoparticle clusters in polystyrene matrix, is achieved. The interaction between the surface plasmons and the quantum sources is observed to generate photoluminescence from the higher excited state energy levels of the excited semiconductor nanowires, which results in a blueshifted fluorescence emission of 50 nm. The localized surface plasmon properties are also determined to be tuned by plasmonic pumping of the quantum sources at different resonant frequencies. Thus, the first observation of the tunable blueshifted fluorescence emission of the semiconductor nanocrystals surrounded by plasmonic nanoparticle aggregates is achieved. The dramatic changes in the spectral profiles of the fluorescent nanowires are attributed to be due to the fast dynamics surface enhanced fluorescence mechanism.

Degradation mechanisms of 1.3 μm C-doped quantum dot lasers grown on native substrate

The aim of this paper is to analyse the degradation modes of 1.3 μm InAs quantum dot laser diodes (QD LDs) grown by using carbon as a p-type dopant, as an alternative to beryllium. The devices were stressed at high current densities, to favor the onset of excited-state (ES) emission, and to study the related degradation phenomena. The study of QD LDs is of fundamental importance for the photonic integrated circuits (PICs). The investigation is based on two types of stress tests: 1) a current step stress and 2) a constant current stress. With these experiments we demonstrate that a) the current is a determining factor for the onset of the ES during the operation of such devices. b) the onset of ES is responsible for a rapid quenching of the ground state (GS) emission. c) stress induces a significant increase in the threshold current of the devices, that is ascribed to the lowering of the injection efficiency, which in turn can be explained by the easier escape of carriers from quantum dots (QDs) from ES energy levels. d) the contribution of defects on the optical and electrical degradation is also discussed.

Can TDDFT render the electronic excited states ordering of Azine derivative? A closer investigation with DLPNO-STEOM-CCSD

TADF materials depend on the small energy gap between the lowest excited singlet and triplet state for an efficient reverse intersystem crossing process. Herein, the first excited singlet (S1) and triplet (T1) state and their gap (ΔEST) are computed based on TDDFT and recently developed coupled-cluster DLPNO-STEOM-CCSD method for Azine derivative. Considerations of higher-order excitations in DLPNO-STEOM-CCSD assign the correct excited state energy level ordering of Azine derivative while DFT functionals fall short in this context.

Theoretical design study on the origin of the improved phosphorescent efficiency of DPEphos quinoline-substituted derivatives for OLEDs

Various tetrahedral heteroleptic Cu(I) complexes, as red organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), show a concern of maximizing the quantum yield (QY) in order to improve the optoelectronic performance. Herein, three experimental [Cu(N^N) (bis [2-(diphenylphosphino)phenyl]ether)]+ (named 1, 2 and 3) were selected as the jumping-off point, following two complexes (named 4 and 5) were successfully designed by introducing bulky electron-donating substituents into N^N ligands continuously. As expected, the QY of designed complexes 4 (0.26) and 5 (0.13) exhibit over twice higher than that of 3 (5.4 × 10−2). This can be attributed to the enhanced electron-donating property of N^N ligand, which accelerated the radiative transition rate (kr) through the apparently elevated energy level of the lowest triplet excited state (T1) and strengthened transition dipole moments, even though the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) effect is weakened. Simultaneously, the tetrahedral geometric distortion could be effectively restrained by the bulky N^N ligands, but the high vibrational freedom of the terminal substituents could also bring in some unfavorable intra-ligand deformation, resulting in an upward of the nonradiative transition rate (knr) at 5 (knr: 0.30 × 105 s−1 for 4; 0.95 × 105 s−1 for 5). Therefore, it's worth noting that the balance of excited state energy level, SOC effect as well as the reorganization energy ought to be elaborately regulated to achieve the optimal QY. This detailed investigation on the microscopic mechanism of these Cu(I) complexes can provide instructive inspiration for experimentalists.

Preparation and up-conversion luminescence characteristics studies of K3YF6: Ho3+, Yb3+ with cryolite structure

Cryolite was considered to be an ideal up-conversion host material due to its low phonon energy, which can effectively suppress the radiation-free transition process of excited state energy levels. In the present paper, a novel up-conversion material K3YF6:Ho3+, Yb3+ with cryolite structure was prepared successfully using a high-temperature solid state method. The up-conversion luminescence properties of K3YF6 doped with different Ho3+/Yb3+ doping ratio were investigated and the optimal doping ratio were confirmed in this system. Under 980 nm excitation, Ho3+/Yb3+ co-doped K3YF6 revealed a strong green emission at the 541 nm, 549 nm and a weak red emission peaking at 666 nm, corresponding to the 5F4, 5S2→5I8 and 5F5→5I8 transitions of Ho3+, respectively. All the red and green up-conversion emission of K3YF6:Ho3+, Yb3+ belong to two-photon process and energy transfer from Yb3+ to Ho3+ simultaneously. Additionally, to understand the energy transfer and electronic transition process of the red and green light emitted, the possible luminescence mechanism were also analyzed in this paper. All the results indicate that Ho3+/Yb3+ co-doped K3YF6 have potential application value in green up-conversion luminescent materials.

Computational insight into newly anomalous delayed fluorescence emitters based on D-A-A structures

In variety of skeleton structures of delayed fluorescence molecular materials, the D-A-A type has been widely concerned recently for its improved double efficiency of reverse intersystem crossing process (RISC). Based on the D-A-A structure, eight new D-TRZ-nPO molecules (D = dihydrophenazine (DHPZ), phenothiazine (PTZ), phenoxazine (PXZ) and 9,9-dimethyl-9,10-dihydroacridan (DMAC), TRZ = triphenyltriazine, n = 1 or 2) with potential performance improvement have been deeply investigated by theoretical calculations. Interestingly, these molecules with the closing energy levels of high-lying excited states and charge transfer characters may perform rare high-lying excited state delayed fluorescence. Meanwhile, the changes of RISC and the corresponding effects caused by D-A-A structure from low energy level to high energy level are analyzed in detail. Furthermore, DHPZ-TRZ-2PO with blue emission (452 nm) is expected to be a potential high-lying excited state delayed fluorescence material candidate.

Investigation on the Cs 6S1/2 to 7D electric quadrupole transition via monochromatic two-photon process at 767 nm

We experimentally demonstrate the cesium electric quadrupole transition from the 6S1/2 ground state to the 7D3/2,5/2 excited state through a virtual level by using a single laser at 767 nm. The excited state energy level population is characterized by varying the laser power, the temperature of the vapor, and the polarization combinations of the laser beams. The optimized experimental parameters are obtained for a high resolution transition interval identification. The magnetic dipole coupling constant A and electric quadrupole coupling constant B for the 7D3/2,5/2 states are precisely determined by using the hyperfine levels intervals. The results, A = 7.39 (0.06) MHz, B = −0.19 (0.18) MHz for the 7D3/2 state, and A = −1.79 (0.05) MHz, B =1.05 (0.29) MHz for the 7D5/2 state, are in good agreement with the previous reported results. This work is beneficial for the determination of atomic structure information and parity non-conservation, which paves the way for the field of precision measurements and atomic physics.

In-silico based development of photoinitiators for 3D printing and composites: Search on the coumarin scaffold

In this work, the in-silico rational design of new photoinitiators by molecular modeling for specific wavelength (here 405 nm) and specific applications (3D printing, composites) is reported. A large number of (keto)coumarin derivatives were investigated by molecular modeling and their synthesis and more detailed photochemical investigations are based on obtaining structures having both excellent predicted light absorption properties @405 nm and high excited state energy levels (to ensure high photochemical reactivity). More particularly, four new families of coumarins were designed (4 of the 19 proposed coumarins were never synthesized (N2,M6,T1,T6)): the first family is based on Nitrocoumarins (N1-N6), the second one on Methoxybenzene-based coumarins and Ethoxycoumarins (M1-M6), the third one on Thiophene-based coumarins (T1-T6) and the last family studied concerns Alkyne-based coumarin (A1). The purpose of this work concerns the study of the photoinitiating ability of these compounds in different monomers for different polymerization processes (free radical, cationic) using FTIR technique. The different compounds reported in this work are very efficient to initiate the free radical polymerization of (meth)acrylates but also the cationic polymerization of epoxides upon mild irradiation conditions using a Light Emitting Diode (LED) at 405 nm as visible light source. Nitrocoumarins were identified as the best candidates for photoinitiation among the different families of coumarins investigated in this work. More precisely, nitrocoumarins are characterized by very good polymerization profiles, great final reactive function conversions (FC) and also high rates of polymerization (Rp). The electrochemical and photochemical properties of the different compounds were also studied to get a deeper insight into the photochemical mechanisms supporting the initiation process. A full picture of the involved photochemical mechanisms is provided. Thanks to the astounding polymerization initiating ability of these coumarins, their use in 3D printing applications can be worthwhile. Remarkably, using these compounds, the preparation of photocomposites was possible even in difficult light penetration conditions resulting from the presence of fibers inside the resins.

Energy transfer mechanism in luminescence Eu(III) and Tb(III) complexes of coumarin-3-carboxylic acid: A theoretical study.

Excited state energy level diagrams of coumarin-3-carboxylic acid (HCCA) chromophore, Eu(CCA)Cl2(H2O)2 (1), Eu(CCA)2Cl(H2O)2 (2), Eu(CCA)3(H2O)3 (3), Tb(CCA)2Cl(H2O) (4) and Tb(CCA)2(NO3)(H2O) (5) in gas phase and polar solution have been calculated by means of DFT/TDDFT/ωB97XD methods. Based on these results, the ability of CCA to sensitize Eu(III) and Tb(III) luminescence has been examined. The competitive excited state processes in the complexes - fluorescence, intersystem crossing (ISC) and phosphorescence, were analyzed depending on the environment, number of the ligands, Ln(III) ion type (Eu and Tb) and counteranion (Cl- and NO3-). It has been found that the environment altered the S1 state energy, oscillator strength, fluorescence lifetime as well as the S1 character - polar solution stabilized the S1(ππ*) state, whereas non-polar solution (gas phase, solid state) stabilized the S1(nπ*) state. The S1(nπ*) state was decisive for the efficient energy transfer as it suppressed the S1 emission of CCA and favored ISC or direct transfer to the emitting levels of Eu(III). The HCCA triplet (T1) state minimum energy (~2.7, ~2.6ZPE eV) and (ππ*) character were retained in Eu/Tb-CCA complexes regardless of the environment. The energy gap between the higher energy T1 donor state and the acceptor levels 5D1 of Eu(III) (~0.5eV) and 5D4 of Tb(III) (~0.1eV) provided optimal resonance conditions for effective energy transfer for Eu(III), but less probability for Tb(III). The nonradiative energy (CCA→Eu(III)) transfer rates and quantum luminescence yield for 2 and 3 were calculated by a strategy combining DFT geometries, INDO/S excitation energies and calculated Judd-Ofelt parameters. The excitation channel T1→5D0 through an exchange mechanism was predicted as the most probable one to populate the main emissive Eu-centered state in complexes 2 and 3. The more efficient luminescence of 3 than that of 2 was discussed and explained.

Evaluation of Fused Aromatic-Substituted Diketopyrrolopyrrole Derivatives for Singlet Fission Sensitizers.

Singlet fission (SF) is a spin-allowed carrier multiplication process that has potential to overcome the Shockley-Queisser limit of solar energy conversion efficiency for single-junction solar cells. It is of importance to prescreen appropriate SF candidates for both basic research and practical applications of SF. Besides common polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) derivatives also undergo efficient SF. A series of DPP derivatives with fused aromatic substituents were investigated considering their conjugation length, constitution, and the introduction of terminal substituents. A comparison of SF properties between nonfused and fused aromatic-substituted DPP derivatives was carried out. Detailed analysis focused on elucidating the relationship between the frontier molecular orbital energies, multiple diradical characters, and SF-relevant excited-state energy levels. Compared to nonfused aromatic-substituted DPP derivatives, fused aromatic-substituted DPP derivatives which contain three aromatic units (thiophene or furan) still share more appropriate energy levels for SF sensitizers. Changing the five-membered aromatic units with benzene ring and introducing -F, -OMe, and -COOH as terminal substituents are both effective ways to improve their performance as SF sensitizers. The results of this research help us to understand the SF properties of DPP derivatives deeply and are beneficial for the design of new DPP-based SF sensitizers.

State-Dependent Photochemical and Photophysical Behavior of Dithiolate Ester and Trithiocarbonate Reversible Addition-Fragmentation Chain Transfer Polymerization Agents.

The rise in popularity of photochemically initiated reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization (photoRAFT) along with the broad spectrum of proposed, and possible, initiation mechanisms result in the need for careful characterization of the photophysical properties of some common RAFT agents. Direct irradiation of the RAFT agent as a means to generate radicals, also known as the photoiniferter mechanism, is one commonly proposed mechanism. The current study shows that dithioesters and trithiocarbonates have the lowest singlet and triplet excited-state energy levels that are close to, or lower than, the C-S bond dissociation energies. Excitation of these agents into their S1 band results in negligible radical production, while excitation into the S2 band or higher results in the decomposition of dithioesters and trithiocarbonates, resulting in radical formation but with low quantum yields. Likewise, there is significant literature precedence for an electron transfer initiation mechanism, PET-RAFT. It is shown that the dithioesters and trithiocarbonates all show peak reduction potentials at ca. -1.0 V (vs SCE). However, transient absorption spectroscopy studies of the electron transfer from a mediator show that these reactions occur rapidly only when the mediator potential is more negative than -1.2 V (vs SCE).

Multipath energy transfer and NIR luminescent properties of dual-lanthanide complexes

Near infrared (NIR)-emitting lanthanide ions, especially Sm3+, Nd3+, Yb3+, and Er3+, show special advantages in non-damage and deep-reaching biological imaging and telecommunication field. But most lanthanide ions have low luminescent efficiency in the NIR region, as a result of insufficient protection of the metal centers against non-radiative deactivation processes and/or inefficient inter- or intramolecular energy transfer. In recent years, organic ligands have been used as antennas to sensitize lanthanide ions to improve their luminescent efficiency. Because the chemical properties of lanthanide ions are very similar, mixed lanthanide complexes can be formed. At the same time, lanthanide ions have many energy levels, the energy transfer is easy to occur between different lanthanide ions. Thus, we can make use of these multi-path energy transfers to obtain efficient dual/multi-lanthanide multi-component NIR luminescent materials, which can be used for the ideal multi-channel near-infrared luminescence anti-counterfeiting bar code application. Herein, A series of NIR luminescent mono- or dual-lanthanide complexes were synthesized by TVPNTB ligand with lanthanide chloride salts. The monocrystalline structures of these rare earth complexes were obtained by X-ray single crystal diffraction. These lanthanide complexes are all hetero-isomorphic structures, crystallized in the monoclinic system and belong to P 21/ c space group. The phase purity was also proved by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD). For the series of one component lanthanide complexes, the ligand TVPNTB can transfer energy to the excited state energy level of Sm3+, Nd3+, Er3+, Yb3+, Pr3+, Dy3+, and Ho3+, and produce NIR luminescence of the order of microsecond lifetime. Among them, the NIR luminescence studies of several lanthanide complexes such as Pr3+, Dy3+, Er3+, and Ho3+ are rarely reported. The results showed that the TVPNTB ligand has good near-infrared photosensitization effects on Sm3+, Nd3+, Yb3+, and Er3+. Moreover, by comparing the energy level difference of these ions, it is found that the energy level difference of Sm3+ from 4G2/5 to 6F5/2 is close to the energy level difference of Yb3+ from 2F5/2 to 2F7/2 in the ground state, and the energy level difference of Nd3+ from 4F3/2 to 4I11/2, which may lead to the cross relaxation energy transfer between rare earth ions and enhance the luminescence of Yb3+ and Nd3+. So we prepared a series of dual-lanthanide complexes, such as TVPNTB-Sm x Nd1 −x Cl3, TVPNTB-Sm x Yb1 −x Cl3 and TVPNTB-Sm x Er1 −x Cl3. Energy transfer from the antenna ligand can sensitize both NIR luminescence of the two lanthanide ions, which might serve as NIR polychromatic anti-counterfeiting luminescent barcode materials. We also investigated the energy transfer properties between the dual lanthanide ions, and confirmed that crossing relax energy transfer from Sm3+ to Nd3+, or from Sm3+ to Yb3+ were realized. The largest energy transfer efficiency ( η ) reaches 39% and 36%, leading to 4 or 2 times longer of the decay lifetimes of Nd3+ and Yb3+, respectively. Through the study of NIR luminescence performance of dual-lanthanide complexes with different proportions, it is clear that in addition to the antenna energy transfer from ligand to lanthanide ions, there is also a cross-relaxation energy transfer process from Sm3+ to Nd3+ and Sm3+ to Yb3+, thus achieving the effective energy transfer between dual-lanthanide complexes, thus further improving the NIR luminescence life of Nb3+ and Yb3+. The multi-path energy transfer strategy summarized in this study not only provides a basis for the preparation of novel high-performance NIR luminescent rare earth complexes, but also provides a reference for the design and synthesis of other multifunctional composite optical materials.
