Using a Specimen Resource Aid to Reduce Intraoperative Specimen Errors.

Specimen management is a critical component of safe patient care. Incorrect results or misdiagnoses may cause delayed or improper treatment and delayed or adverse outcomes. We piloted a quality improvement project to address labeling errors in a surgical suite at a large Midwestern academic medical center. We created a gynecology-specific source aid to assist intraoperative team members define the tissue source according to anatomic location and pathology department regulations. The aid also provided tips on preparing and transporting specimens. Staff member feedback showed that the source aid was user-friendly and helpful. Most specimen errors after the implementation of the aid were related to nonreportable, fixation delays; and we implemented a second phase to address the delays. Collaboration and education during this project fostered staff member empowerment to manage specimens effectively using the source aid and promote safe patient care.

Empowerment of urban communities in utilizing small courtyards with hydroponic technology

Hydroponic technology is one way to grow crops on a small piece of land. Homes in urban areas can use this approach. The purpose of this community service is to increase the role of members of the Women Farmers Group (KWT) in the use of small urban yards using hydroponic technology, especially for KWT Agro 40 in Pilahan Village, Kotagede, Yogyakarta City. In this program, the empowerment of group members is achieved through counseling, training on demonstration plots, mentoring, oversight, and evaluation. Members of KWT Agro 40 are knowledgeable and skilled in using their yard to grow vegetables using hydroponic methods, allowing them to use their yard to improve family nutrition and income. This community service resulted in one hydroponic installation with the NFT system (Nutrient Film Technique) and 5 hydroponic installations with the wick system. Hydroponics technology made with the NFT system is placed in the group garden, while for hydroponics with the wick system it is placed in the group garden and in the homes of KWT members. The harvest from this hydroponic technology can meet the needs of healthy and nutritious vegetables and can reduce family expenses.

The influence of household human and social capitals on participation in agricultural development initiatives in the coastal region of Kenya

The present study sought to establish the human and social capital that determines rural households’ participation in agricultural projects and programmes implemented by the Kenyan government and development partners. The research was carried out among rural households in the three counties of the coastal region of Kenya. Multi-stage sampling techniques (purposive, proportionate random and simple random sampling) were used to select the study area and the study sample. Data were collected using a semi-structured questionnaire, Focus Group Discussion and observation schedules. The data analysis was carried out using descriptive statistics and regression analysis with the help of the Statistical Package for Social Sciences Version 22. The findings revealed that individuals with human capital; namely age (-0.15), primary education (-0.16), secondary education (-0.14), vocational training (0.35), and on the of job training (0.25), have a higher likelihood of participating in agricultural development initiatives. Households with the social capital of membership to groups (0.51), engaged in economic activities (0.53) and have linkages with development agencies (0.44) have a higher likelihood of participating in development initiatives. Key policy recommendations for county government and development partners include: encourage the community members to enrol in adult education; provide support for vocational and technical training; register as members in existing groups or form groups based on common interest, and engage in economic activities. The county governments should enhance advisory services to ensure close contact with professionals who will facilitate training, meetings and interactions with groups leading to the empowerment of members.

COVID-19 Testing: A Qualitative Study Exploring Enablers and Barriers in the Greater Accra Region, Ghana.

IntroductionThe COVID-19 pandemic is a global crisis and has reaffirmed that extensive testing along with effective tracing is still crucial to slowing transmission of the COVID-19 virus despite the rolling out of vaccines. This study explored enablers and barriers to COVID-19 testing in the Greater Accra region of Ghana. We envision lessons learned from this study could serve as a road map to strengthen the current response to COVID-19 and preparedness for future outbreaks, particularly in low- and middle-income countries.MethodsA qualitative design was undertaken to explore the phenomenon. Data collection methods included in-depth interviews with key informants with a purposively selected sample of 20 participants. Interviews were conducted using flexible semi-structured interview guides. Depending on the participant's position and involvement in COVID-19 testing, the guides were modified, and key elements were drawn from a tailored version of the WHO Health System Framework, incorporating the Essential Public Health Functions (EPHF). The interview findings were augmented by reviewing published literature.ResultsBetter health governance through political leadership, community participation, multisectoral collaboration, effective resource management, and information systems played a crucial role in catalyzing COVID-19 testing. The primary barriers to testing were mainly COVID-19 infodemic, inadequacy of material resources to meet growing health needs, and a lack of opportunities to have equal and easy access to testing services. Furthermore, although human resources were adequate, they were unevenly distributed across settings.ConclusionDespite rolling out vaccines against COVID-19, testing remains an important measure to control the virus. To effectively be prepared for extensive COVID-19 testing and respond to future outbreaks, the following are recommended: there should be improved political commitments, coordination, and communication with diverse actors to ensure even distribution of all resources across the country; empowerment of community members should be encouraged to develop community-oriented pandemic preparedness and management of COVID-19 infodemic; investment in strengthening capacity of Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP); incorporation of health policy and systems research (HPSR) into the post-COVID-19 pandemic recovery process and future pandemic preparedness.

Signed languages - Unique and ordinary: A commentary on.

In this commentary on the article by Kidd and Garcia, we point out that research on natural signed languages is an important component of the goal of broadening the database of knowledge about how languages are acquired. While signed languages do display some modality effects, they also have many similarities to spoken languages, both in function and in form. Thus, research on signed languages and their acquisition is important for a fuller understanding of the diversity of languages. Since signed languages are often learned in contexts other than those of typical input, it is also important to document the effects of input variation; we also see it as critical that input be provided as early as possible from models as fluent as possible. Finally, we call for removing existing barriers to training and education for would-be researchers, especially those interested in working on signed languages. Importantly, we advocate for the recognition of signed languages, for signed language research, and for the empowerment of community members to lead this research.

This research is on savings and loan cooperatives (Credit Union) with a research sample of credit cooperatives in East Java. The purpose of this research is to find out whether the empowerment program moderates financial performance on members' welfare. The results of the research explain that financial performance affects the member empowerment program by 82.19%. The significance of 0.011 , this shows that the empowerment of credit cooperative members (CU) is influenced by financial performance (PEARLS) and that the empowerment program has a positive effect on the welfare of members by 34% with a significance level of 0.02. This shows that the member empowerment program has a significant effect on the welfare of credit cooperative (CU) members.

Training in the creation of interactive read-aloud video books as a medium for children's digital literacy

Literacy has not become a flagship program at the PKK of Grabag District. However, literacy problems in this group are quite complex related to the lack of literacy facilities, lack of literacy movement assistance, and the tendency of gadget addiction which makes literacy culture quite worrying. Community empowerment for PKK members in Grabag District aims to provide training and assistance in the creation of interactive read-aloud with a video book concept that can be used as a digital literacy media, especially for children. The training was carried out 4 times and video-making assistance was conducted 1 time online. The speakers who attended were interactive read-aloud practitioners, librarians, founder of Taman Baca, and the Unimma student team with 11 participants from PKK representatives in Grabag District. As a result, 4 video books have been created by participants and published on social media.

CU as an institution engaged in community empowerment must understand and develop its management with good financial planning. So that it can carry out the empowerment of members properly and correctly. The implementation of ABDIMAS has a positive impact on the management. Hopefully the impact of this training does not stop at the management but extends to members and the wider community

Residents’ empowerment for sustainable ecotourism: insights from Ghana

ABSTRACT Ecotourism can be sustainable and contribute to environmental preservation if community members are empowered. However, few studies have investigated the empowerment of community members for sustainable ecotourism, particularly in developing countries. To address this knowledge gap, this study employs a mixed-method approach to investigate the extent of residents’ empowerment in four communities at two ecotourism destinations in Ghana. The study looked at six aspects of empowerment which are social, political, psychological, environmental, human, and economic. The findings indicate the need to build the human empowerment of and enact ecotourism policies to regulate ecotourism practices. The inclusion of human empowerment in the empowerment framework proved useful in analysing the strengths and weaknesses in the delivery of sustainable ecotourism objectives.

Engineers and engineering through the eyes of preschoolers: a phenomenographic study of children’s drawings

ABSTRACT This study aimed to explore how preschoolers perceive engineers and engineering by using their drawings. For this aim, phenomenography was used as a research approach. The data were collected using the draw-and-tell technique and through the drawing and explanation related parts of the Draw an Engineer Test. Totally, 436 preschool children from 16 different cities in Turkey were asked to draw an engineer and narrate their drawings. The data were analyzed using inductive content analysis. Findings indicated that some children did not reveal an understanding of engineer or engineering via their drawings (n = 50). A limited number of children (n = 17) had a perception of engineer parallel to the definition of the engineer in the literature. Most children (n = 199) tended to perceive engineering as a male-specific and physical work and represented engineers while working outdoors (n = 147); building structures or constructing machinery (n = 156). This research implies that preschoolers should have a higher amount of opportunity to explore engineering in everyday life with the empowerment of teachers, parents, and community members.

This study examines the effect of Organizational Culture and Empowerment on Organizational Commitment to improve Employee Performance at Puskesmas Ngemplak 1. This research was conducted on all employees of Puskesmas Ngemplak 1, totalling 40 people. This research is quantitative. The sample of this study used a sampling technique with a questionnaire or questionnaire. The sample data collection was carried out by distributing questionnaires directly to each employee. The number of questionnaires distributed and processed was as many as 20 questionnaires. Data processing in this study uses multiple linear regression analysis techniques, assisted by the SPSS program version 20.0. The results of this study indicate that organisational culture has a positive and significant effect on organisational commitment. Organisational culture has a positive and significant impact on performance. The empowerment of members has a positive and significant impact on organisational commitment. Assignment of members has a positive and significant effect on performance, and organisational commitment also positively and significantly impacts performance. This proves that organisational culture and member empowerment on organisational commitment significantly affect the performance of the employees of Puskesmas Ngemplak 1.

Pengembangan Koperasi melalui Pemantapan Manajemen Berbasis Syariah di KSPPS Keluarga Barokah Amanah (Karomah) Balongpanggang Gresik

Cooperatives and Small and Micro Enterprises are one part of the entity that is the pillar of the people's economy. Problems in management at KSPPS Karomah are started from the low human resources and the weak application of discipline, both the discipline of members and managers of KSPPS Karomah. The purpose of this service is to realize the awareness of members to participate in having an active role in two things, namely realizing their roles and responsibilities as members, and for administrators and managers to be able to manage well and be able to provide service schemes with 5 (five) instruments. empowerment in the form of Alms (infaq), Loans, Financing, Savings and Time Investments. The method used for problem solving as the priority problems and urgent needs of cooperatives: Increasing the discipline of members and managers (Organization Stabilization, Management of KSPPS Karomah and Empowerment of Members). The results that can be achieved and the implementation of this service include: Increased management of KSPPS Karamah which is effective, efficient and professional, Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), SOM and organizational improvements, Increased network relations between members and administrators, supervisors and employees, Increased business income managed by KSPPS Karamah. The conclusions in this service include: improving database-based services, producing SOPs, SOM, National Service Journal with ISSN, promotion of the Karomah KSPPS Cooperative. Another additional output is the provision of an attendance machine, and a simple Excel application to measure the eligibility of members who apply for Sharia Savings, Loans and Financing at KSPPS Keluarga Barokah Amanah.

Empowering the teaching staff is required for the development and progress of education-oriented organizations in the face of global changes. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to elaborate on the background model of strategies and consequences of competitive advantages based on the empowerment of faculty members and university professors. In this applied paper, a qualitative methodology based on the foundation theory was employed. The study population consisted of educational elites (faculty members and experienced professors) in non-profit and private universities and institutions of higher education in Mashhad. The subjects were selected using snowball sampling. The data collection tool was a semi-structured interview and the data obtained from the interviews were coded and analyzed. After grouping the codes, 10 main categories, 57 sub-categories and 50 concepts were obtained, which were organized in a paradigm model as strategies (strategic thinking, organizational transformation, organizational innovation and career innovation) and consequences (organizational culture development, organizational development, productivity and social development, environmental development and strategic thinking). The results suggested the process of developing competitive advantage strategies based on empowering university professors. Given the broad range of a university’s customers, it is recommended that the managers of higher education institutions develop expert projects to identify and foster the necessary capabilities and competencies for university professors, recruiting human resources based on their skills and capabilities. The universities will continue to grow in the field of education and research, and this growth will lead to the development of a competitive advantage

Empowerment of Aisyiyah members through the application of GERMAS on aspects of drug storage at home

The government has implemented the Healthy Living Community Movement (GERMAS) program through promotion of the pharmaceutical sector related to drug storage at home. However, there are still many problems in storing household medicines in the community. This activity was carried out through a community empowerment approach using the community capacity building method for a community organization, Aisyiyah, which consists of Muslim women in the Grendeng village, Purwokerto. This activity ws carried out in stages, namely pre-test methods, lectures, group teaching, self-empowerment through peer teaching and training, and measuring the success of activities using post-tests. Based on the whole series of activities, the knowledge of partners about storing medicines at home has increased in a good category.

Iranian medical university board of trustees' challenges in practice: A qualitative study.

Background: Board of Trustees (BOTs) in Iranian medical universities has been considered as one of the most important structural and managerial changes to create a revolution in decision-making and accountability. This study aimed to explore challenges facing BOTs in governing Medical Universities (MUs). Methods: In this qualitative study, 27 semi-structured interviews were conducted with current and former members of BOTs, chancellors of universities, BOTs’ secretaries, and staff in the Ministry of Health and Medical Education in 2017. These participants were selected using a purposive and snowball sampling method. Data were analyzed by framework analysis and using Atlas-Ti software. Results: Five key themes were identified, including 1) infrastructure (problems in BOT laws and membership requirement), 2) planning and decision-making (evidence-based decision making and planning and meeting), 3) organizing (ambiguity in positions and lack of necessary administrative structure), 4) performance evaluation (self-reporting, lack of time allocation, lack of evaluation criteria and lack of required structure for evaluation), 5) independence and influence on performance (dependency on the Ministry of Health and Medical Education and financial independence). Conclusion: Due to obsolete laws, it seems that the structural and executive reform of BOTs is essential. The issues of university autonomy and empowerment of the boards’ members should particularly be considered in such reforms. However, it appears that more delegation and empowering the position of the boards could be effective strategies in governance medicals universities.

Just Culture: The Foundation of Staff Safety in the Perioperative Environment.

In today's perioperative setting, staff members are potentially exposed to a variety of safety and environmental concerns. As health care organizations implement measures to provide safe environments for perioperative team members, organizational leaders must pivot away from antiquated mindsets and responses and other hierarchical models of leadership. Foundational to creating and fostering safe environments is providing an atmosphere in which staff members, regardless of their role, are empowered to speak up for safety. This article defines a just culture; explores the critical elements of a just culture, including psychological safety, leader and staff member responsibilities, and staff member empowerment; and provides tools and resources that may be beneficial for leaders who are creating a just culture for staff safety in the perioperative setting.

Putting members in the centre: examining credit union accountability as member-based social enterprises

Purpose This paper aims to explore how accountability to members is practised within credit unions. In particular, this study examines formal and informal practices and underlying approaches regarding accountability to members. Design/methodology/approach Adopting a case study approach, this study explores accountability within two credit unions in the lightly-regulated context of Indonesia through focus group discussions with credit union practitioners and documentary analysis. Findings Findings reveal both credit unions prioritised accountability to members for financial and social performance, underpinned by a socialising, relational approach and driven by a strong sense of social mission. Various mechanisms were adopted to directly address accountability to and empowerment of members, facilitating their participation and education. Further, several mechanisms of and approaches to accountability to other stakeholders indirectly enhanced the credit unions’ accountability to members. Research limitations/implications This study highlights the interrelated nature of credit unions’ accountability mechanisms to members. Further, empowerment through participation, education and small business development, suggests valuable investment in members’ social, intellectual and financial capital. Originality/value This study examines the socialising nature of accountability to credit union members and other stakeholders to support members’ interests, providing insights into how third sector organisations more broadly might enhance accountability to those the organisation seeks to serve.

Pentecostalism and Development: The Role and Prospects of Prosperity Gospel in the Socio-Economic Development of Nigeria

The prosperity gospel is a popular doctrine that is taught and practised by many Pentecostal churches in Nigeria. It has enhanced and improved the financial status of many Pentecostal churches thereby enabling them to carry out several projects which have enhanced the socio-economic wellbeing of many people. Such projects include the establishment of schools, universities, printing presses, financial empowerment of members, provision of welfare packages and care for the needy. This paper highlights the meanings of Pentecostalism, prosperity gospel and development. It also attempts to explain how prosperity gospel, in the context of some Pentecostal churches- Living Faith Church (Winners Chapel) and Christian Central Chapel International, among others, have contributed to the socio-economic wellbeing of many. However, this paper acknowledges that there is room for an improvement and expansion of the contributions of prosperity gospel to development in the future. Hence suggestions are given on how to harness, improve and expand the benefits of the prosperity gospel in Nigerian society in the future.

Deriving Socio-Economic Benefits, Empowering Women and Decision making through involving in Self-Help Group with special reference to Nagarbera Revenue Block of Kamrup District of Assam

Women Empowerment is now considered as a issue of global arena, because the country’s development path in inevitably linked with the social and economic plight of female participation in the nation’ road of progress. Women constitute almost 50% of the population and play a significant transformation of a country. With the time being it becomes essential that women should be economically be developed as in the line with the policy of liberalization the Indian economy. Empowerment of female members by involving in Self-help Group, which is being popularized by Prof. Mohammed Yunus, a Nobel Laureate of Bangladesh along with the theory of “Grameen Bank”, can bring enviable changes and enhancement of the living conditions of women in developing countries. Self-help Group or SHG, an effective tool to empower female citizen socially and economically, where in India a still a major segment of female population are exploited and deprived of the basic rights. The present study is being conducted in nagarbera revenue block of Kamrup district. The study aims to look at the role and performance of SHGs in empowering women, the socio-economic benefits and their decision making ability in family as well as community. For the study primary and secondary sources have been considered. Analysis of results have been computed by percentage method. The study concludes that financial autonomy, training programs, community participation are enabling factor to achieve goal.
