Job Stress of Tourism Industry Employees Due to Covid-19

The tourism industry has been badly affected by the Covid 19 pandemic. The policy of limiting tourism travel activities has led to uncertainty in the tourism business. Besides, tourism industry workers are at high risk of contracting the Covid 19 virus because tourism services must be done directly with tourists. Many workers in the tourism industry experience work stress due to the Covid 19 pandemic. This systematic literature review study examines tourism worker stress due to the Covid 9 pandemic. The literature review method uses a cross-sectional search of health, tourism, and management articles. The search results were eight articles selected by Prisma Chart with defined inclusion and exclusion criteria. The results of a systematic literature review study revealed that the perceived threat of the Covid 19 virus causes fear and worry about being infected. Another factor that causes stress for tourism workers regarding job insecurity is perceived uncertain job continuity. Experienced work stress has an impact on decreasing job satisfaction and well-being, then can increase the turnover intention of workers from the company. Several strategies can be implemented to reduce work stress by providing self-protection tools, service rules, adjusting work assignments, and preparing transformational leadership to increase the company's resilience in facing various external conditions.

Regression Analysis on Share of Employment of Tourism Industries to Total Employment

This study, based on data accessed from the Philippine Tourism Satellite Account of the Department of Tourism of the Philippines spanning from 2000 to 2022, reveals the dynamic nature of the tourism sector's contribution to employment in the Philippines over two decades. It demonstrates steady growth from 2000 to 2019, with a peak at 13.6% in 2019, reflecting the increasing significance of tourism-related industries in job creation. However, a subsequent decline in 2020 and 2021, likely due to the adverse impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on the global tourism industry, highlights the sector's vulnerability to external shocks. The slight recovery in 2022 suggests resilience and adaptability within the industry. Utilizing Linear Regression Analysis, the research identifies a statistically significant and positive relationship between the year and the share of employment in tourism industries, with an average annual increase of approximately 0.167%. The high R Square value of 0.678 indicates that a substantial portion of the variability in the employment share can be explained by the linear relationship with the year. These findings underscore the gradual but consistent growth of the tourism sector in providing employment opportunities, emphasizing its enduring significance in the Philippines' labor market while recognizing the challenges it faces in an ever-changing global landscape

Objetivo do estudo: Este estudo tem como objetivo determinar o papel mediador da regulação emocional cognitiva no efeito da percepção da morte e do medo da COVID-19 vivenciada por funcionários do setor de turismo em seu sofrimento psíquico.Metodologia/abordagem: A pesquisa é um estudo transversal de métodos quantitativos de pesquisa. Os dados da pesquisa foram coletados e analisados com a ajuda de escalas dos funcionários do setor de turismo que operam em Antalya e Muğla, que são as regiões turísticas da Turquia.Originalidade/ Relevância: Mostra que a capacidade de regulação cognitiva da emoção é importante para os trabalhadores do turismo que trabalham em contato próximo com turistas de diferentes partes do mundo e carregam diferentes variantes de doenças infecciosas para lidar com seu sofrimento psicológico.Principais resultados: Os resultados da pesquisa mostram que a regulação cognitiva da emoção prediz sofrimento psicológico. Outra descoberta mostra que a regulação das emoções cognitivas reduz a percepção de morte e medo da COVID-19 e que um estado psicológico também afeta o outro.Contribuições teórico-metodológicas: Na pesquisa, pode-se argumentar que examinar as quatro variáveis relacionadas ao estado psicológico dos funcionários do setor de turismo que vêm de várias partes do mundo e interagem com pessoas portadoras de diferentes vírus de doenças (hoje varíola dos macacos) fará com que uma contribuição significativa para a literatura, prática e método.

Career Competencies and Job Performance of Saudi Employees in Tourism Industry: Intelligent Career Model

Tourism industry is one of the most growing sectors that contributes significantly to Gross World Product (GWP), employment opportunities, and local culture. Saudi Arabia has witnessed a growing number of hotel projects of new international chains and domestics hotels. Studies relevant to career competencies topics are relatively scarce among the first-line staff in Saudi’s hotels industry. This study seeks to examine the relationship between career competencies and job performance among frontline staffs at luxury, mid and upper mid-scale hotels in Riyadh and Makkah regions of Saudi Arabia. This study used online questionnaire method and was sent to 700 different hotels with a response rate of 76% (n=499). Partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) was used for data analysis. Results showed that reflective, communicative, and behavioral career competencies have a statistically significant positive influence on individual work performance with values of (B=0.3, p<0.01), (B=0.34, p<0.01), and (B=0.21, p<0.01) respectively. A number of practical implications along with the research limitations were discussed.

Persistence in Australian tourism employment industries

ABSTRACT There are many studies that have focussed on the different dimensions of employment in several industries during COVID-19. However, the impact of the pandemic on employment in the tourism industries has been underexplored. Moreover, we are not aware of any study that has considered the impact of the pandemic on employment in different sub-sectors within the tourism industries. This paper analyzes the effect of COVID-19 on employment in Australian tourism industries using fractional integration. Using quarterly data (2004-2021) and disaggregating data by sectors, we examine two samples, one ending in December 2019 and the other one in December 2021. The novelty of this study is the consideration of the effect of this pandemic on employment in different sub-sectors that constitute the tourism industry. Our results indicate that the current pandemic has not produced significant changes in the persistence of the series. The only significant changes take place for the retail trade industry that moves from mean reversion to lack of it, and the cafes and restaurants in the opposite direction. One of the implications of the results is that interventions before the pandemic, such as concerted marketing efforts, are useful to reduce the impact of COVID-19 on tourism related industries.

관광업계 종사자들의 공정관광 실현 제약 경험에 대한 정성적 연구

Since the need was identified roughly ten years ago, domestic tourism policies have been implemented from a variety of perspectives, and tangible results have been achieved. As unfair tourism practices in the tourism industry continue to exist in a chronic form, the purpose of this study is to identify the obstacles tourism industry employees face in realizing fair tourism. Participants from the tourism industry in Seoul were recruited and analyzed using qualitative research methods. FGI was conducted for a total of 15 workers in the travel, social enterprise, and accommodation industries between July and August of 2021, and they were categorized into six fairness categories. Specifically, the fairness of procedures, interaction, opportunity, perception, business environment, and distribution process were classified. As the first study in the tourism context, this study theoretically contributed to the expansion of fairness theory and originality in the research subjects by reflecting the voices of tourism field industry workers and analyzing their limitations on the realization of fair tourism. In addition, policy implications that can be implemented in practice are proposed in order for fair tourism to take root in our society in the post-COVID-19 era.

CAREER PERCEPTION: GRADUATING TOURISM STUDENTS OF 2021-2022 DLSU-D IN THE NEW NORMAL

The devastating effects of the COVID-19 pandemic also had an impact on academic institutions that offer tourism-related programs and students' expectations for their future careers in the sector. In order to significantly contribute to the creation of programs for tourism students in connection to their job options, the study examined and determined how De La Salle University-Dasmarinas, Philippines tourism students perceived their careers amidst post-pandemic. Using the mixed methods and the simple random and purposive sampling techniques, 105 graduating tourism management students enrolled in A.Y. 2020-2021, completed the researcher-made survey questionnaire to gather quantitative data and descriptive statistics were used to evaluate it and show it as frequency tables. The quantitative findings showed that: (1) Despite the detrimental consequences of the pandemic on the industry and being aware of other career opportunities and alternatives, students were driven by a desire to work in tourism and made their decisions as a result; (2) The majority of the tourism industry aspects that are seen as vital and have favorable perceptions are jobs associated with the nature of tourism industry employment; and (3) Participants identified several possibilities in the tourism industry and various prospects outside the field. The data may help De La Salle Dasmarinas University comprehend the decision-making criteria employed by its students while choosing a vocation. To help students make wise judgments, the report suggests career education.

Needs Analysis of English Language Use in Tourism Industry in Selangor, Malaysia

English proficiency is required in all professional areas, but it has become essential in the tourist industry because of its specific characteristics. Needs analysis plays a vital role in developing the curriculum in English for specific purposes. This studyidentifies the needs and the problems of English language usage among the tourism industry employees in Selangor, Malaysia. The questionnaire was used as the primary data focusing on speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills. Utilising a descriptive research design, a total of 50 respondents were randomly selected for the study. The findings showed that in general, the respondents’ overall needs of English language skills were rated at a high level. Meanwhile, regarding the employees’ problems in using English at work were found at a moderate level. The problems encountered were less high compared to their English language needs. The necessities resonated what English skills are essentials for them to use in their job and to know the elements of each skill to be improved when they learn English. The implication of the findings will be helpful to develop and expand existing English for Tourism curriculum or ESP courses, particularly in Malaysia and Indonesia, to create a more effective English for tourism course based on the needs of the tourism industry employees in the future.

The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between psychological capital (confidence, hope, resilience, optimism) and job performance of tourism industrial workers. In order to achieve the purpose of this study, a survey was conducted targeting employees of tourism industry in 10 cities in korea. The survey was conducted over a period of about one month from May 1, 2021 to June 1, 2021. 150 copies of the questionnaire were distributed, and 145 copies were used as final analysis data. Analysis result using SPSS 23.0 program and AMOS 23.0 program, Among the psychological capital of tourism industry employees, ‘confidence’ and ‘hope’ form a positive (+) influence relationship on job performance (job satisfaction, organizational commitment), Hypothesis1-1, Hypothesis1-2, Hypothesis2-1, and Hypothesis2-2 was adopted. However, as the relationship between resilience and optimism among psychological capitals did not form a positive (+) effect on job performance (job satisfaction, organizational commitment), Hypothesis1-3, Hypothesis1-4, Hypothesis2-3, and Hypothesis2-4 were rejected. Through this study, psychological capital of tourism industry employees was confirmed as 'confidence' and 'hope'. It is suggested that the tourism industry needs a management strategy for human resource management that can strengthen 'confidence' and 'hope' among employees' psychological capital in order to maximize business performance and improve employees' quality of life.

Employment in Tourism Industries: Are There Subsectors with a Potentially Higher Level of Income?

This work analyzes the tourist sector, the employment generated by the tourism industries, and its relationship with tourism receipts. The hypothesis is that there are tourist subsectors with a potentially higher level of income. The article studies the impact of the distribution of the employed population in the different subsectors of the tourism industry, controlling for the most important economic variables, on the level of income per arrival in 24 OECD countries, using panel data for the period 2008–2018. As its main result, the model indicates that the labor force that increases most the receipts per arrival is the ‘travel agencies and other reservation services’, followed by the ‘sports and recreation industry’ labor force, while having a large labor force in the ‘food and beverage’ or ‘cultural industry’ operates in the opposite direction.

Tourism employees’ fear of COVID-19 and its effect on work outcomes: the role of organizational support

ABSTRACT The COVID-19 pandemic has substantially affected tourism industry employees across the globe, particularly flight attendants, who work in enclosed spaces and in close proximity to others. This paper discusses the effect of flight attendants’ fear of COVID-19 (FC) on their work engagement and service behaviors. Furthermore, the moderating effect of COVID-19 organizational support (COS) on the relationship between fear and behaviors was investigated. Implications and recommendations for management with regard to the pandemic are also presented. Using a quantitative research approach, 316 Taiwanese international flight attendants were recruited through convenience and snowball sampling. Structural equation modeling was conducted to verify the causal relationships between the variables. FC was determined to negatively affect work engagement and service behaviors, impacts that were mitigated by high COS. Specifically, COS enabled the respondents to concentrate on and improve the quality of their work.

The purpose of this study is to confirm the difference between psychological well-being and Job satisfaction with the demographic characteristics of tourism industry employees. In order to achieve the purpose of the study, a survey was conducted for employees in the national tourism industry(hotel, airline, travel agency, convention, restaurant). 150 copies of the questionnaire were distributed and the final 138 copies were used as analysis data. SPSS ver. Using the 23.0 program, frequency analysis, reliability analysis, factor analysis, and One-Way ANOVA were conducted. As a result, first, it was found that among the demographic characteristics(Age, marriage, family type, education, position, department of work, number of years worked) of the employees of the tourism industry, only ‘educational background’ had a difference. Specifically, it was confirmed that there was a significant difference in psychological well-being between junior college graduation groups and graduate school graduation groups. In particular, the average value of psychological well-being was high in the graduate school group. Second, there was no difference in the demographic characteristics and job satisfaction of the tourism industry employees. The psychological well-being of employees of the tourism industry is an important indicator for job satisfaction in the organizational aspect and life satisfaction in the personal aspect. Therefore, when the tourism industry manages human resources according to the ‘educational background’, It is suggested that there is a need to prepare a human resource management plan that can increase psychological well-being.

코로나 바이러스로 인한 관광종사자들의 스트레스와 직업불안이 직무만족과 삶의 만족에 미치는 영향: 정부신뢰의 조절효과를 중심으로

코로나 바이러스(COVID-19)는 전 세계 많은 사람들의 정신건강과 직업불안, 직무만족 및 삶의 만족을 위협하는 중요한 스트레스 요인이다. 관광산업은 COVID-19에 의해 직접적으로 경제적 손실을 입은 대표적인 산업이다. 본 연구는 COVID-19로 인하여 관광산업 종사자들이 지각하는 스트레스와 직업불안이 직무만족과 삶의 만족에 미치는 영향관계를 규명하고, 정부신뢰의 조절효과를 분석하고자 한다. 이러한 연구목적을 달성하기 위하여 관광산업 종사자들만을 대상으로 온라인 설문조사를 실시하였으며, 총 427부의 설문지를 실증분석하였다. 분석결과, 지각된 스트레스는 직무만족과 삶의 만족에 유의한 부(-)의 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 직업불안 역시 직무만족과 삶의 만족에 유의한 부(-)의 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났으며, 직무만족은 삶의 만족에 유의한 정(+)의 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 지각된 스트레스와 직무만족간의 관계에서 정부신뢰는 부(-) 조절효과를 하는 것으로 나타나 정부신뢰는 지각된 스트레스에 따른 직무만족에 대한 부정적인 효과를 감소시킨다는 사실을 확인하였다. 본 연구를 통하여 관광산업은 관광종사자들이 지각하는 스트레스와 직업불안을 해소하기 위한 방안을 마련하고, 정부는 국민들의 신뢰를 높이기 위한 정책을 수립하여 관광종사자들의 스트레스를 해소하고 직무 및 삶의 만족도를 높이는데 기여해야 할 것이다.

The Impacts of Tourism Risk Management, IT Adoption, Agility and Resilience on the Sustainable Tourism Supply Chain Performance of Maldives’ Tourism Industry

Recently, the tourism industry has a significant role in economic growth worldwide and attain the attention of recent researchers. Therefore, the ongoing study aims to examine the role of tourism IT adoption, TR management orientation, and tourism agility on the sustainable tourism supply chain performance (STSCP) of Maldives’ tourism industry. The investigation of mediating role of tourism supply chain resilience among the nexus of tourism IT adoption, TR management orientation, tourism agility, and sustainable tourism supply chain performance of Maldives’ tourism industry are also included in the goal of the ongoing study. The data were obtained using questionnaires from the tourism industry employees related to the supply chain process, and AMOS has been utilized for analysis purposes. The results indicated that tourism IT adoption, TR management orientation, and tourism agility positively associate with the sustainable tourism supply chain performance of the Maldives’ tourism industry. The findings also exposed that tourism supply chain resilience has played a positive mediating role among the nexus of tourism IT adoption, TR management orientation, tourism agility, and STSCP of the Maldives’ tourism industry. These findings are guided to the policy developers and implementers that they should increase their focus on the tourism industry that could enhance the country's economic growth.

Analysis of the Effect of Social Support on Sustainable Competitive Advantage in Tourism Industry – Based on the Perspective of Living-Ecology-Production Integrated Space

A series of problems, such as disordered development of urban production and living space, low land use efficiency, and ecological environment pollution, appear in the rapid industrialization and urbanization process to seriously hinder the sustainable development of human social economy and ecological environment. In this case, scientifically planning national space and coordinating spatial function become the key problems in the construction of sustainably developing ecological civilization under the background of new-style urbanization and new rural development. The establishment of national spatial system living-ecology-production integrated function coevolution mechanism is the current scientific problem for solutions as well as the key in the implementation of future national spatial planning. Aiming at employees in tourism industry in Guilin, Guangxi, total 460 copies of questionnaire are distributed. After deducting invalid and incomplete copies, 362 valid copies are retrieved, with the retrieval rate 86%. According to the results to propose suggestions, it is expected to help promote the sustainable competitive advantage of industry with the application of living-ecology-production integrated space.

Political influences on the roles and characteristics of ethnic tourism industry employees: a case of Korean-Chinese tour guides

ABSTRACT This study investigates the roles and characteristics of Korean-Chinese tour guides during the rapid socio-political changes between China and Korea. Data were obtained through in-depth interviews with 12 guides working in South Korea and were analyzed using the grounded theory framework. Open coding gave 98 conceptual labels, 30 subcategories, and 13 main categories. This study allows us to innovatively investigate the psychological changes in Korean-Chinese tour guides affected by political influences. However, most of the data was collected from males in their 30s using cross-sectional analysis, a longitudinal study would therefore strengthen the value of our approach in the future.

TEACHING THE DISCIPLINE "BUSINESS ENGLISH" TO STUDENTS OF TOURISM SPECIALTIES IN THE FRAME OF LEXICAL APPROACH

The article under consideration deals with the urgent issue related to the methodological improvements and modernization of the foreign language teaching process at universities. In particular, the survey was dedicated to the description of the lexical approach and underlining its main features. The main reason for choosing was determined with the fact that business meetings, exhibitions, conferences, symposia, working with tourists as guides, managers and animators in hotels, recreation centers and sanatoriums require employees in tourism industry not only general and specialized knowledge, professional literacy, but also the ability to organize and communicate effectively on multiple topics.The primary purpose of research of this article is to find out the intrinsic characteristics and principles of the lexical approach application in the modern educational process alongside with presenting practical lexical approach activities based on mastering business vocabulary.Theoretical results of the investigation revealed two principles, such as: Grammaticalized Lexis and Collocation in Action. We made a conclusion that lexis is central in creating meaning, but grammar plays a subservient managerial role.The second part of the survey was connected with the activities that realized the lexical approach in practice. The common goals of them were to enrich the students’ vocabulary and create the special environment for mastering and improving lexical units through different communicative contexts. The practical results were realized by means of the analysis of the multiple activities: "Reading the Story "Away Day", "Climate Change", "Advertising Vocabulary", "Business Acronyms", "Graphs – Charts" and "Transitional Phrases".Finally, we concluded that the lexical approach allows students to indivisibly pay attention to the form, content and function of the grammatical phenomenon in the language being studied.In our view it is not possible, or even desirable, to attempt to teach an unlimited number of lexis. Nevertheless, it is beneficial for language learners to gain exposure to lexical units and to gain experience in analyzing them in order to begin the process of internalization. We believe, that encouraging learners to notice language is central to any methodology connected to a lexical view of language.

The purpose of this study is to empirically analyze the effects of job engagement and recovery resilience based on the tourism industry employee consciousness on life satisfaction. With reference to prior studies, we intend to take a holistic approach to the tourism industry employee awareness perceived by tourism industry employees. The survey was conducted for approximately 1 month from June 1, 2020 to June 30, 2020. On the other hand, one person in charge selected for each field was selected as a researcher for this study, and the investigation was conducted. Antecedent and consequences of organizational identification: a study in the tourism sector of Sikkim

Organizational identification has been identified as an important construct in behavioral research. It has been viewed from different perspectives such as marketing, organizational behavior, human resource management, and psychology. This study is conducted in organizational behavior context among the employees of tourism industry in Sikkim and gave some important contribution which can be useful to researchers and practitioners. With the application of social identity theory, the study investigated the antecedent and consequences of organizational identification. To test the research model, self-reports of 246 respondents are used and for analyzing data explorative factor analysis, confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modeling were applied. Findings of the study suggested that perceived organizational support emerged as an antecedent of organizational identification, whereas job satisfaction and knowledge sharing behavior emerged as consequences of organizational identification.
