Reading self-concept, trait emotional intelligence and anxiety of primary school children with dyslexia

IntroductionThe association between the cognitive and the affective domain in reading is well documented in research, especially when difficulties are manifested. The aim of this study was (a) to investigate levels of reading self-concept, trait emotional intelligence, and anxiety of students with dyslexia and compare them to students with no previous assessment and (b) explore the hypothesis that reading self-concept and trait emotional intelligence are negative predictors of state and trait anxiety taking into account students’ individual characteristics such as gender, school year, and school performance.MethodsA total of 794, fifth- and sixth-grade Greek primary school children aged 10 to 12 years old participated in the study. Of them, 50 children had a statement of dyslexia. The State and Trait Anxiety Inventory for Children, the Reading Self-Concept Scale, and the Trait Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire—Short Form were administered to the participants.ResultsThe results showed that children with dyslexia were more vulnerable in terms of their perceptions of reading self-concept and emotional intelligence as compared to typical peers. Moreover, students’ characteristics, i.e., grades in math and language and dyslexia, had a direct positive path to trait emotional intelligence and reading self-concept while trait emotional intelligence and reading self-concept predicted negative anxiety.DiscussionThe implications of the results in terms of the possible protective role of reading self-concept and emotional intelligence on anxiety for children with dyslexia are discussed, and suggestions for future research are presented.

Comparative Analysis of Psychometric Properties of Irrational Belief Scale of Anxiety Patients

The term irrational is basically used in psychotherapy. The concept of irrationality is especially focused in Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) that is originated and developed by American Psychologist Albert Ellis. In this research it was first examined that how emotional intelligence plays a vital role in different anxiety disorders and how this emotional intelligence disturbs individual’s life. There are few researches conducted on emotional intelligence in Pakistan. The sample comprised of 200 patient’s males (n=105), females (n=95) with age range from 18 years older. The sample of study was collected by convenient sampling technique from different government hospitals of Islamabad, Rawalpindi and Wah Cantt. The patients were diagnosed by the psychiatrist and researcher herself according to the diagnostic criteria given by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition, Text Revision (APA, 2000). Participants of both genders were included. Emotional intelligence was measured through trait emotional intelligence questionnaire short form (TEIQue-SF), irrational beliefs were measured through irrational belief scale (IBS) and anxiety was measured by Beck anxiety inventory (BAI). It was concluded that emotional intelligence has significant negative relationship with irrational beliefs and anxiety in patients with anxiety disorders. Irrational beliefs have non-significant positive relation with anxiety in patients with anxiety disorders.

Compassion Fatigue Syndrome in Social Workers and Its relationship with Emotional Intelligence.

A study was conducted on how emotional intelligence and compassion fatigue (CF) interact in social workers. The hypothesis was that social workers with higher emotional intelligence were less likely to suffer/develop CF. A sample of 264 subjects was selected from among 2,014 active social workers in Seville (Spain). They were administered a sociodemographic questionnaire (α = .710), the Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire-Short Form (α = .790), and the Compassion Fatigue Scale (α = .770). Authors carried out a reliability analysis (Cronbach's alpha), a frequency study, contingency tables, a Pearson-type correlations analysis, a linear regression analysis, and analysis of variance-type significance tests (with values between p = .001 and p = .005). The social workers who participated in this study presented high emotional intelligence, yet high rates of CF were found. Specifically, the lower the social worker's manifest level of emotional intelligence, the greater the suffering of CF. Overall, social workers with higher emotional intelligence were less likely to suffer or develop CF.

Burnout and well-being of medical and surgical residents in relation to emotional intelligence: A 3-year study

BackgroundThis study aims to examine the relationship of emotional intelligence to physician burnout and well-being and compare these changes between medical and surgical residents during training. MethodsThe longitudinal study used survey data, collecting measures on burnout and emotional intelligence in residents. Postgraduate year 1 residents at a community-based Michigan hospital completed the following surveys: Maslach Burnout Inventory, Physician Wellness Inventory, and Trait Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire–Short Form survey. These measures were given quarterly in postgraduate year 1 and once during subsequent years. ResultsSeventy-seven residents completed measurements during their first 3 years. Forty-two (54.5%) were in the medical resident group; the remaining 35 (45.5%) were in the surgical resident group. Significant increases in measured burnout during the first year improved in subsequent years but did not return to baseline (P < .01). Emotional exhaustion (Maslach Burnout Inventory–Emotional Exhaustion) increased a relative 44% the first year (P = .000) and decreased 23% by the third year (P < .01). The Physician Wellness Inventory subscales also had significant decreases (P = .01) but less than the Maslach Burnout Inventory subscales (improvement ≤25%). Both medical and surgical groups had similar decreases in the Physician Wellness Inventory subscales (–25%) in their first year. The emotional intelligence score significantly correlated with exhaustion (Maslach Burnout Inventory–Emotional Exhaustion: r = –0.243; P = .002) and distress (Physician Wellness Inventory–Distress: r = –0.197; P = .014). ConclusionThe risk for burnout increased sharply at the beginning of training for this hospital resident participant group and remained high throughout residency. Emotional intelligence is an important factor associated with less emotional exhaustion during residency.

Exploring the relationship between burnout and emotional intelligence among academics and clinicians at King Saud University

BackgroundAcademics and clinicians are exposed to significant workload pressures and are at a high risk of stress and burnout.ObjectivesThis study aimed to examine the relationship between burnout and emotional intelligence (EI) by comparing and corelating burnout and EI scores among academics and clinicians against several factors.MethodsIn this cross-sectional study, academics and clinicians at King Saud University and King Saud University Medical City and Affiliated Hospitals were invited to complete anonymous questionnaires: Maslach Burnout Inventory-Human Services Survey and the Trait Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire Short Form. The collected data were analyzed using the SPSS software for descriptive studies, group comparisons, regression analyses, and Pearson's (r) correlation tests.ResultsStudy participants included 126 individuals (men = 65, 51.6%; women = 61, 48.4%). Of these, 65% were Saudi nationals and 35% were expatriates, and 76 were academics while 50 were clinicians. The mean (minimum to maximum) burnout total score was 55 ± 18.9 (8 to 97) and the global TEIQue-SF score ranged between 2.8 and 6.7 (5.04 ± 0.7). Burnout scores varied between departments and were higher among younger participants and non-Saudis. Age had a small direct correlation with self-control (r = .17, p = .05), and there was no statistically significant correlation with other EI factors. However, there was a moderate inverse correlation between age and emotional exhaustion (EE) (r = -0.33, p < 0.0001), and a small inverse correlation with depersonalization (DP) (r = -0.21, p = 0.02). T-tests demonstrated a statistically significant difference in EI factor "emotionality" among Saudis (5.2 ± .8) and non-Saudis (4.9 ± .8) (t124 = 2.2, p = 0.03), and for burnout subscales, there was a statistically significant difference in DP among Saudis (6.4 ± 4.8) and non-Saudis (8.5 ± 5.6), (p = 0.03). Moderate (r = -0.3, p = 0.01) and weak (r = -0.2, p = 0.05) negative correlations were found between EI factors and burnout subscales (EE, DP).ConclusionThis study confirmed an inverse relationship between burnout and EI scores among academics and clinicians. The findings suggest the need for introducing measures and implementing a system for early detection of burnout among staff and providing support to enhance EI and requisite care for those undergoing burnout episodes.

A network analysis of relationships between the Trait Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire Short Form (TEIQue-SF) and the Big Five personality traits in Italian workers

This study investigated the relationship between the Trait Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire Short Form (TEIQue-SF) and the ten facets of the Big Five Questionnaire (BFQ) via network analysis. The TEIQue-SF and the BFQ were administered to 751 Italian workers. Both centrality indexes (Expected Influence and Node Predictability) and bridge dimensions were calculated. Stability and accuracy were also checked to ensure the reliability of the findings. The BFQ facets of Perseverance (Consciousness) had the highest centrality while Emotion control (Emotion stability, the opposite of Neuroticism) showed high centrality. Among TEIQue-SF dimensions, Sociability followed by Emotionality and Self-Control had high centrality. TEIQue-SF Emotionality and Sociability had a bridge function. Both TEIQue-SF Emotionality and Sociability and both BFQ Perseverance and Emotion control are relevant in linking emotional intelligence and personality traits. Although further studies are needed, the network analysis represents a promising approach in providing a more detailed analysis of the relationships between dimensions of emotional intelligence and facets of personality traits in workers.

Videoconferencing analytic psychodrama in treating young adults' psychological suffering: preliminary results.

The study aims to explore the effects that videoconferencing Analytic Psychodrama (AP) has on the psychological wellbeing and emotional competence of young adults who are suffering from mental health problems. Twenty-two undergraduate students, asking for help at the Psychological Counselling Service of the University of Bologna for anxiety-depressive problems, took part in the three online groups that met weekly from October 2020 to July 2021. The Clinical Outcomes in Routine Evaluation Outcome Measure, the Trait Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire Short Form, the Toronto Alexithymia Scale, the Interpersonal Reactivity Index, and the Group Climate Questionnaire were used as test-retest questionnaires for clinical outcomes, emotional competence, and group climate evaluations. There was a statistically significant difference between the pre-test and 10-month scores for patients in clinical outcomes. Alexithymia significantly decreased and emotional intelligence and group engagement increased post-intervention. Videoconferencing AP sounds promising for alleviating psychological problems and to improve young adults' emotional competence.

Psychometric properties of the Arabic version of the Trait Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire Short Form (TEIQue-SF)

The Trait Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire Short Form (TEIQue-SF), a brief and effective tool used for assessing emotional intelligence, originated in the Western culture and needs to be adapted to other cultures. The current study aimed to evaluate the psychometric properties of an Arabic-adapted version of the TEIQue-SF. A cross-sectional study was conducted on a sample of 487 Arabic-speaking participants, including students and laypeople. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was used to assess the conceptual factorial structure. Measurement invariance analyses were performed across genders. The big five were employed as external validation measures. The CFA findings validated the proposed TEIQue-SF structure, which included one latent factor (global trait EI) and four indicator factors. Analysis of measurement invariance revealed that the TEIQue-SF Arabic version was factorially equivalent across genders. Furthermore, TEIQue-SF demonstrated good internal consistency. No significant differences are observed between women and men in terms of trait emotional intelligence. The correlations between TEIQue-SF and the big five dimensions demonstrated the theoretically predicted relationships with these variables. We concluded that the Arabic version of the TEIQue-SF is psychologically sound and appropriate for research and practice in Jordan.

Mediating Role of Empathy in the Relationship between Emotional Intelligence and Thinking Styles

The aim of the study is to examine the mediating role of empathy in the relationship between rational and experiential thinking styles and was designed in a correlational design. The sample of the study consists of 593 university students who were determined by simple random sampling method. Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire–Short Form, Empathy Quotient Scale, and Rational-Experiential Thinking Styles Scale were used for data collection. Bootstrapping method and Pearson product moments analysis were used to analyze the mediating role of empathy. Results indicated that there are significant relationships between the variables. In addition, empathy is a full mediation in the relationship between emotional intelligence and experiential thinking style and empathy is a partial mediation in the relationship between emotional intelligence and rational thinking style.

Emotional Intelligence among Nursing Students: Findings from a Longitudinal Study.

Emotional intelligence is an important factor for nursing students’ success and work performance. Although the level of emotional intelligence increases with age and tends to be higher in women, results of different studies on emotional intelligence in nursing students vary regarding age, study year, and gender. A longitudinal study was conducted in 2016 and 2019 among undergraduate nursing students to explore whether emotional intelligence changes over time. A total of 111 undergraduate nursing students participated in the study in the first year of their study, and 101 in the third year. Data were collected using the Trait Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire Short Form (TEIQue-SF) and Schutte Self Report Emotional Intelligence Test (SSEIT). There was a significant difference in emotional intelligence between students in their first (M = 154.40; 95% CI: 101.85–193.05) and third year (M = 162.01; 95% CI: 118.65–196.00) of study using TEIQue-SF questionnaire. There was a weak correlation (r = 0.170) between emotional intelligence and age measuring using the TEIQue-SF questionnaire, and no significant correlation when measured using SSEIT (r = 0.34). We found that nursing students’ emotional intelligence changes over time with years of education and age, suggesting that emotional intelligence skills can be improved. Further research is needed to determine the gendered nature of emotional intelligence in nursing students.

Factors affecting postpartum depression in Turkish women

AimTo assess the effects of cognitive emotion regulation, emotional intelligence status and related factors on postpartum depression (PPD) in postpartum women. Design and methodsThis descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted in 268 mothers with babies aged 1–12 months. The study was carried out between 01 November 2021 and 01 February 2022 in the pediatric outpatient clinic of the Medical Faculty Hospital of a province in the Central Anatolian Region of Turkey. Data were collected using the sociodemographic and obstetric data collection form, Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS), Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire–Short Form (CERQ), and Trait Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire–Short Form (TEIQue-SF). ResultsSeventy-one (26.5 %) mothers received scores above the cut-off point (>13) in the depression scale. Experiencing emotional violence, having cognitive emotion regulation difficulties, and low emotional intelligence characteristics affected the risk of developing postpartum depression by 16 % (F = 13.757, p < 0.001). ConclusionExposure to emotional violence, cognitive emotion regulation, and emotional intelligence status reveal that they are important in identifying women at risk of PPD. These findings highlight the need for nurses to develop comprehensive cognitive emotion regulation and emotional intelligence traits assessment programs, including depression screening.

Is emotional intelligence linked with academic achievement? The first TEIQue-SF study in a sample of Saudi medical rehabilitation students

ObjectiveThe present study examined the relationship of the Trait Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire Short Form (TEIQue-SF) and academic achievement (GPA). Analyses were performed using a sample of Saudi-origin medical rehabilitation undergraduate students (N = 130). The present study examined the psychometric properties of the Chinese version of the Trait Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire Short Form (TEIQue-SF). Analyses were performed using a sample of undergraduates (N = 585) recruited from four universities across China. MethodsOne hundred thirty medical rehabilitation students completed the Trait Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire-Short Form (TEIQue-SF). Descriptive and inferential statistical analyses were carried out to elucidate relationships (or the lack of the same) between various variables. ResultsWhole sample alpha coefficient value for global trait EI was 0.84, while the same for trait EI factors ranged from 0.51 to 0.76. Global Trait EI was found higher in males than in females (Female students median score: 17 ± 2.56 VS Male students median score: 18 ± 3.67; U: 1667, p 0.04). A positive and statistically significant relationship was found between Well-being and the three other factors (with Self-control [r(128), 0.413, p 0.01]; with Emotionality [r(128), 0.518, p 0.01], with Sociability [r(128), 0.490, p 0.01]). Sociability was found to have a similar positive relationship with Self-control [r(128), 0.239, p 0.05] and Emotionality [r(128), 0.490, p 0.01] respectively. Furthermore, GPA was found to have a negative (not statistically significant) relation with Sociability. Overall, there was no association found between trait EI and GPA. ConclusionsThe present study is one of two studies that has investigated the train EI-academic achievement link in healthcare-related students. Our findings resonate with existing literature on the subject.

Emotional Intelligence, Burnout, and Wellbeing Among Residents as a Result of the COVID-19 Pandemic.

BackgroundWe previously reported the correlation between emotional intelligence (EI) with burnout/wellbeing in our PGY-1 residents, finding that EI moderated the development of burnout in the PGY-1 year. When COVID-19 arrived in early 2020, we were already collecting EI and burnout data for the 2019-2020 year. We elected to follow those residents throughout the year and compare them to the subsequent cohort to study the effect of the pandemic on their burnout and wellbeing and the influence of EI on this pattern.Materials and MethodsAll residents entering the training program (PGY-1) 2019-2020 (SURGE) & 2020-2021 (POST-SURGE) were administered the emotional intelligence questionnaire short form (TEIQue-SF), the Maslach burnout inventory, and the physician’s wellness inventory. The questionnaires were completed quarterly. Statistical analysis included ANOVA. Institutional Review Board approval was obtained prior to the study.ResultsThe overall combined PGY-1 residents year (n = 73) mean EI was 3.9 with no differences between academic year groups. The domains of burnout and physician wellbeing were examined across four different time points during the resident’s first year. Domain scores changed over the four time periods during the first year. There was a relative decrease in achievement by 3.4 points, decrease in career purpose by 1.8 points, decrease in cognitive flexibility by .6 points and increase in distress by 4.1 points. Emotional exhaustion increased significantly more for the SURGE 2019-2020 group compared to the POST-SURGE 2020-2021 group (a relative 77% change). Emotional intelligence was independently assessed within each domain at baseline and for changes over time.DiscussionPatterns of burnout and wellbeing were different with the COVID-19 SURGE group compared to the COVID-19 POST-SURGE group, perhaps because of differing expectations of the PGY-1 year participants but also perhaps due to the destabilizing effect of the first COVID-19 surge.

An item response theory analysis of the Trait Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire Short-Form (TEIQue-SF) in the workplace

Trait emotional intelligence (EI) predicts important outcomes in the workplace. This study is the first one that reports item and scale functioning in the workplace using item response theory (IRT) analysis of the global 30-item Trait Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire Short-Form (TEIQue-SF). Past IRT research, performed mostly on undergraduate English-speaking students, showed that several items in TEIQue-SF were poorly informative. Data collected in Sweden from 972 employed persons were analyzed. IRT with a graded response model was utilized to analyze items of the global TEIQue-SF scale. As was found in past research, the lowest response category in all items had extreme difficulty threshold parameter values, and only low and moderate levels of latent trait EI were adequately captured, but most items had good values of the discrimination parameters, indicating adequate item informativeness. Four items, which in past research have also shown weak psychometric properties, were poorly informative. To effectively measure trait EI in today's organizations, there is an advantage in using the most informative items to best represent this construct.

Adaptation of Trait Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire (TEIQue) in Bangla

The Trait Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire (TEQue) is an instrument to measure emotional intelligence based on self-report. The instrument has increasingly drawing the attention in the organizations. The present study aimed at adapting the Trait Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire (TEQue) short form (K.V. Petrides, 2009) into Bangla version After careful checking by the Subject Matter Expert (SME), the translated form was administered over 200 adolescent-adult ranging from 17 to 21 years of age through convenience sampling during May 2017 to June 2017. Cronbach Alpha was found significant to be satisfactory. Validation of the Inventory was assured by content and construct validity where construct validity included item analysis. Satisfactory level of validity was found for the Bangla version of Trait Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire. The version of the test has found useful in the context of Bangladesh. This inventory can be used in Emotional Intelligence testing.

Trait emotional intelligence among hierarchical levels of leadership

urpose. This study examined whether trait emotional intelligence (or emotional self-efficacy) can differentiate across leadership levels in a sample of senior, middle, and junior leaders, employed by a bank organization in Greece (N = 157). Method. For the objectives of this study, the Trait Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire (TEIQue) short form (Petrides, 2009) was sufficient. It includes 30 items from the full form (two items for each of the 15 facets) and can be used to measure the four components generated from the full form: emotionality, self-control, sociability, and well-being, as well as the global trait emotional intelligence. Age, gender, tenure, and education level were used as control variables. Traitemotional intelligence, age and education were significant predictors in a multinomial regression model. Findings. Regarding senior leaders, the odds were significantly higher for each unit increase in trait EI(5.58) than for middle leaders (1.92), with junior leaders as the reference category. Further, leadersscored significantly higher on trait emotional intelligence compared to the standardization sample of the TEIQue. Τhe difference is due to senior and middle leaders, though the effect size for the former was considerably larger than for the latter, whereas junior leaders did not show statistically significant differences. Trait emotional intelligence and four factors’ impacts (self-control, well-being, emotionality, and sociability) were investigated among the three hierarchical leadership levels. Value of results. The results support the notion that leadership positions require high trait emotional intelligence and that leadership needs are dependent on the leader’s level within the organization.

The relationship between stress, trait emotional intelligence and mental health amongst Gaza\u2019s basic-year medical students during the COVID-19 outbreak

BackgroundThis study investigates the relationship between exposure to stress, trait emotional intelligence (trait EI) and mental health problems (anxiety and depression symptoms) amongst basic-year medical students during COVID-19. The sample consists of 379 basic-year medical students. Off them, 160 (42.4%) were male and 218 (57.5%) were female. The following measures were used in the study: The Medical Student Stressor Questionnaire (MSSQ), Trait Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire—Short Form (TEIQue-ASF), The anxiety symptoms scale and the depression scale.ResultsThe majority of students reported high to severe level ARS and mild to moderate DRS. Female students showed higher levels of ARS, TLRS, SRS, GARS and anxiety symptoms compared to male ones. Moreover, students with higher levels of academic performance reported lower levels of ARS and DRS, higher levels of trait EI and lower levels of anxiety and depression symptoms. In addition, trait EI has a significant negative association with anxiety and depression symptoms and stress domains (ARS, IRS, TLRS, SRS, DRS, GARS) and total stress. Finally, stress domains are positively correlated with anxiety and depression symptoms.ConclusionBasic-year medical students in the Gaza Strip are exposed to stressful events which aggravate the effect of exposure and cause higher levels of anxiety and depression symptoms.

Study Protocol-Coping With the Pandemics: What Works Best to Reduce Anxiety and Depressive Symptoms.

Background: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic and lockdown might increase anxiety and depressive symptoms in most individuals. Health bodies recommend several coping behaviors to protect against such symptoms, but evidence on the relationship between these behaviors and symptoms mostly comes from cross-sectional studies in convenience samples. We will conduct a prospective longitudinal study of the associations between coping behaviors and subsequent anxiety and depressive symptoms during the COVID-19 pandemic in a representative sample of the Spanish general adult population.Methods: We will recruit 1,000 adult participants from all autonomous communities of Spain and with sex, age, and urbanicity distributions similar to those of their populations and assess anxiety and depressive symptoms and coping behaviors using fortnightly questionnaires and real-time methods (ecological momentary assessments) for 1 year. The fortnightly questionnaires will inquire about anxiety and depressive symptoms [General Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7) and Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9)] and the frequency of 10 potential coping behaviors (e.g., follow a routine) during the past 2 weeks. In addition, we will collect several variables that could confound or moderate these associations. These will include subjective well-being [International Positive and Negative Affect Schedule Short Form (I-PANAS-SF) and Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS)], obsessive-compulsive symptoms [Obsessive Compulsive Inventory-Revised (OCI-R)], personality and emotional intelligence [International Personality Item Pool (IPIP) and Trait Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire Short Form (TEIQue-SF)], sociodemographic factors (e.g., work status, housing-built environment), and COVID-19 pandemic-related variables (e.g., hospitalizations or limitations in social gatherings). Finally, to analyze the primary relationship between coping behaviors and subsequent anxiety and depressive symptoms, we will use autoregressive moving average (ARMA) models.Discussion: Based on the study results, we will develop evidence-based, clear, and specific recommendations on coping behaviors during the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdown. Such suggestions might eventually help health bodies or individuals to manage current or future pandemics.

Trait and Ability Emotional Intelligence and Its Impact on Sports Performance of Athletes.

Emotional intelligence (EI) is considered a determinant of sports performance. Two opposing perspectives have been discussed in the theoretical discourse on EI: EI as an ability versus EI as a trait, both widely differing in content and method of assessment. Previous applied sport psychology research is characterized by a heterogeneous use of different conceptualizations and measurements of EI. However, evidence for the superiority of an EI concept does not exist. This study directly compares the ability and trait EI concepts in the relationship with athletic performance. An online survey was conducted (response rate = 19%). Participants completed the Mayer-Salovey-Caruso Emotional Intelligence Test, the Trait Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire Short Form, a list of questions about biographical information as well as information related to sports performance and sport participation. We used regression analyses and controlled type of sports to investigate how sports performance is influenced by EI. Trait EI positively predicted self-assessment of athletes’ performance (B = 1.02; p < 0.01) whereby ability EI did not predict any outcome of sports performance. The effect of trait EI was independent of the ability EI. Overall, the result indicates some evidence for the superiority of the trait EI in applied sports psychology.

Validation of the Chinese version of the Emotion Awareness Questionnaire for use with adolescents

We tested the validity and reliability of the Emotion Awareness Questionnaire (EAQ), and examined the correlation between emotional awareness and social anxiety with three samples of Chinese adolescent students. In Sample 1 (n = 724) we used exploratory factor analysis to determine the scale's construct validity, finding that the 26-item, sixfactor measure had high accuracy, and a subsequent confirmatory factor analysis indicated a good fit to the data. Sample 2 (n = 464) results show that the EAQ had good psychometric properties, and its concurrent validity was confirmed with the Trait Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire–Short Form as a criterion. Sample 3 (n = 216) results show that emotional awareness was significantly and negatively correlated with social anxiety. Cronbach's alpha internal consistencies in the three samples were .71, .74, and .73, respectively. The revised scale was determined to be reliable for examining emotional awareness among Chinese adolescents as well as the correlation between emotional awareness and social anxiety in this population.
