The EMC Society and the National Electronics Museum

The IEEE EMC Society and the National Electronics Museum (NEM) have had a vested relationship based on a written agreement since 2016. The agreement stated that the Society would loan the museum some forty pieces of EMC test equipment and the NEM agreed to store the pieces in a secure and safe location and to display some of the equipment at the NEM's location in Linthicum, Maryland.

Every year in August, the EMC community convenes for the IEEE International Symposium on Electromagnetic Compatibility, Signal and Power Integrity. In 2017 we met in the Washinghton DC area on the banks of the picturesque Potomac River in the National Harbor. The event was characterized by a high quality technical program as well as a remarkable social program, including a dancing performance by members of the EMC Society Board of Directors. With this Personalty Profile column, I woud like to introduce a colleague to you, who worked hard to make the 2017 IEEE International Symposium on EMC+SIPI happen. The person I am talking about is Michael F. Violette, an active member of our Society, particularly involved in marketing as well as in the Washington DC/Northern Virginia EMC Society Chapter.

The EMC society standards development and education committee and standards advisory and coordination committee

One of the major activities of the EMC Society is to be heavily involved in the creation of standards, education about standards, and monitoring standards activity worldwide. In addition to its other roles, the Society is a Standards Development Organization (SDO). Standardization is a major part of what helps make technology work, ensuring that products made by different companies will work together, and ensuring that the existence of one product will not cause a different, unrelated product not to work. The process of creating standards is a model for how cooperation and inclusion can work to bring diverse interests to a single table, to find common ground, to increase the scope of that common ground and to build on it in ways that help industry, and help the society served by products that industry manufactures.

EMC society constitution and Bylaws changes

From time to time, amendments to the Constitution and Bylaws of the EMC Society are required in order to maintain their relevance and to align them with the organizational structure of the Board of Directors. The amendments shown below were approved on 27 October 2018 by the IEEE EMC Society Board of Directors and are submitted to the IEEE Vice President, Technical Activities, for approval. In accordance with the procedures for amending the Constitution and Bylaws, they are being published here. These amendments become effective 30 days after publication unless ten percent of EMC Society members object. Comments or objections may be sent to frank.sabath@ieee.org.

Standards advisory and coordination committee (SACCom) meeting

The SACCom meeting in Long Beach during the symposium was immediately followed the SDECom meeting and was chaired by John Norgard. The committee is comprised of representatives of standards development organizations not part of the IEEE or the EMC Society. SACCom receives reports of the EMC standards activity of these organizations, which are reported by the representatives present at the meeting. The intent is to see if there are similar standards activities in their organizations and if so, is there a way to cooperate or to exchange information so as not to duplicate standards on a particular subject. Further, the SACCom also works with the SDECom in pointing out areas of possible duplication or at least similar projects for further investigation to see if there can be a cooperative effort. EMC personality profile

This year the EMC Society decided to hold the IEEE International Symposium on EMC, Signal Integrity and Power Integrity (SIPI) in conjunction with the 9th Asia-Pacific EMC (APEMC) Symposium in May 2018 in Singapore. In my opinion this is an excellent sign to demonstrate the international nature of our professional society. Therefore, I dedicate this Personality Profile column to introduce a colleague from Asia. The person I would like to introduce you to is Professor Wen-Yan Yin from Zhejiang University (ZJU), located in Hangzhou, China.

EMC Society Standards Week in Long Beach

I thought it would be a good idea to advertise in advance the many standards working group (WG) meetings and management meetings that are planned so far for the 2018 IEEE Symposium on EMC+SIPI in Long Beach, California. This will give the reader a chance to look for the final details in the advance and final programs as to the day, time and location for the meetings.

C63® gives a wireless workshop in long beach

The American National Standards Institute Accredited Standards Committee C63® (EMC) took its continuing major annual workshops this time to the West Coast of the US. This one, which was focused on compliance testing of wireless devices and unintentional radiators, was held on 28 July 2018, the Saturday before the start of the Long Beach EMC Society Symposium. The host was Element Materials Technology in Irvine, California. Their semi-anechoic chamber was made available to perform testing of transmitters in accordance with the following standards:

Hello fellow Young Professionals (YPs)! I am one of the newly appointed EMC YP representatives, Louann Mlekodaj. Caroline Chen graciously handed over the reins of the YP committee to me. I would like to thank Caroline for her years of service as the EMC YP Representative. I look forward to building upon past EMC YP experiences. Please allow me to quickly introduce myself. I live and work in the Chicago, Illinois area for Shure, Incorporated, as a Senior Digital Wireless Engineer designing wireless products for their professional audio equipment. I received a BSEE and MSEE from the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) in 2005 and 2010, respectively, and have been an RF engineer for over twelve years in the wireless and electromagnetic Chicago Chapter over the years. I have been an IEEE member for nearly ten years, and active within the IEEE EMC Society! I am looking forward to meeting you at the 2018 EMC+SIPI Symposium in Long Beach from July 30 to August 3, 2018!

Four new distinguished lecturers for 2019–2020

The EMC Society Board of Directors has approved four new Distinguished Lecturers (DLs) for the term 2019–2020. They are Prof. Marcos Rubinstein, Dr. Xiaoxiong (Kevin) Gu, Prof. Seungyoung Ahn and Prof. Liang Zhou. Our other three DLs, Dr. Ihsan Erdin, Mr. Zhong Chen and Dr. Richard Xian-Ke Gao continue their terms through December of 2019.

EMC standards activity

In this issue of the EMC Magazine Standards Activity column, our readers are treated to a wide range of subjects. We report on three very different subjects that capture major EMC standards activity of three EMC Society committees that deal with or use EMC standards and one non-EMC Society committee called the EMC Advisory Committee on EMC (ACEC) of the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC).

Practical papers, articles and application notes

In May 2017, the Technical Committee on EMC, IEICE Communication Society, Japan, and the IEEE EMC Society, Singapore Chapter, co-organized an EMC Joint Workshop in Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. The joint workshop aimed to promote EMC knowledge amongst the researchers. I asked the organizing committee to select the three best student poster papers so that the students could expand them to full-length papers for this column. I hope that through this effort we can attract more young EMC engineers to publish their work in the EMC Magazine.

The EMC Society organized two Chapter Chair Training events this year, one in Singapore and one in Long Beach. I am always humbled to meet volunteers that help run local events around the world.

IEEE EMC young professionals

A year has gone by since our last Young Professionals’ events at the 2016 IEEE International Symposium on EMC in Ottawa. More and more Young Professionals (YPs) are getting involved in volunteering at different levels of the EMC Society and within the IEEE. You will see specific YPs social events at all IEEE flagship International Symposia. This year will be the first year where you might see an YP co-chairing a session at the 2017 IEEE International Symposium on EMC+SIPI in Washington, DC. This ensures that the new generation becomes familiar with the behind the scenes work of organizing a session and they are introduced to the different Technical Committees (TCs) that the EMC Society has to offer. Each TC (http://www.emcs.org/committees/technical_main.html) focuses on a well-defined topic and their respective main committee meetings are held during the Symposium. The TC summarizes the work done over the year and discusses new topics/projects that will require help to perform experiments, simulation, etc. where YPs and everyone can contribute. Check the Symposium final program for the date and time of the TC meetings. All are welcome to attend.
