The early Cretaceous was cold but punctuated by warm snaps resulting from episodic volcanism

The Cretaceous is characterized as a greenhouse climate from elevated atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations, transgressive seas, and temperate ecosystems at polar paleolatitudes. Here we test the hypothesis that the early Cretaceous was a cold climate state with a new Aptian atmospheric carbon dioxide record from the C3 plant proxy and early Cretaceous sea level curve from stable oxygen isotopes of belemnites and benthic foraminifera. Results show that carbon dioxide concentrations were persistently below 840 ppm during the Aptian, validating recent General Circulation Model simulations of ice sheets on Antarctica at those concentrations. In addition, sea level was estimated to be within the ice sheet window for much of the early Cretaceous prior to the Albian. This background state appears to have been episodically interrupted by Large Igneous Province volcanism followed by long-term carbon burial from weathering. We hypothesize that the early Cretaceous was largely an icehouse punctuated by warm snaps.

Assessing watershed-scale impacts of best management practices and elevated atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations on water yield

Changes in water yield are influenced by many intersecting biophysical elements, including climate, on-land best management practices, and landcover. Large-scale reductions in water yield may present a significant threat to water supplies globally. Many of these intersecting factors are intercorrelated and confounded, making it challenging to separate the factors' individual contributions to shaping local streamflow dynamics. Comprehensive hydrological models constructed based on a well-established understanding of biophysical processes are often employed to address these matters. However, these models rarely incorporate all relevant factors influencing local hydrological processes, due to the reliance of these models on the latest, albeit limited, state-of-the-art research. For instance, complexities inherent in watershed hydrology, which involve multilayered interactions among potentially many biophysical factors, leave the direct analysis of subtle impacts on water yields measured in-situ largely intractable. Therefore, we propose an innovative approach to assess impacts of elevated atmospheric CO2 concentrations and flow diversion terraces (FDTs) on stream discharge rates at the watershed scale. Initially, we use a comprehensive hydrological model to account for the impacts of major climatic and landuse/landcover factors on changes in field-acquired measurements of water yield. Next, we employ conventional and advanced statistical methods to decompose the residuals of model predictions to facilitate the identification of subtle influences promoted by increases in atmospheric CO2 concentrations and the application of FDTs in an agriculture-dominated watershed. Through this innovative approach, we find that FDTs contributed to a watershed-wide, net water-yield reduction of 188.0 mm (or 28.9 %) from 1992 to 2014. Ongoing increases in ambient CO2 concentrations, which are responsible for an overall reduction in a watershed-level assessment of stomatal conductance, have led to a minor increase in stream discharge rates during the same 23-year period, i.e., 0.45 mm of water yield per year, or 1.6 % overall. Streamflow reductions explicitly caused by regional warming in the area alone, on account of increased evapotranspiration, may be overestimated due to the opposing, synergistic effects on water yield associated with CO2-enrichment of the lower atmosphere and the annual application of FDTs.

Elevated CO2 and nitrogen addition enhance the symbiosis and functions of rhizosphere microorganisms under cadmium exposure

Soil microbes are fundamental to ecosystem health and productivity. How soil microbial communities are influenced by elevated atmospheric carbon dioxide (eCO2) concentration and nitrogen (N) deposition under heavy metal pollution remains uncertain, despite global exposure of terrestrial ecosystems to eCO2, high N deposition and heavy metal stress. Here, we conducted a four year's open-top chamber experiment to assess the effects of soil cadmium (Cd) treatment (10 kg hm−2 year−1) alone and combined treatments of Cd with eCO2 concentration (700 ppm) and/or N addition (100 kg hm−2 year−1) on tree growth and rhizosphere microbial community. Relative to Cd treatment alone, eCO2 concentration in Cd contaminated soil increased the complexity of microbial networks, including the number links, average degree and positive/negative ratios. The combined effect of eCO2 and N addition in Cd contaminated soil not only increased the complexity of microbial networks, but also enhanced the abundance of microbial urealysis related UreC and nitrifying related amoA1 and amoA2, and the richness of arbuscular mycorrhiza fungi (AMF), thereby improving the symbiotic functions between microorganisms and plants. Results from correlation analysis and structural equation model (SEM) further demonstrated that eCO2 concentration and N addition acted on functions and networks differently. Elevated CO2 positively regulated microbial networks and functions through phosphorus (P) and Cd concentration in roots, while N addition affected microbial functions through soil available N and soil organic carbon (SOC) concentration and microbial network through soil Cd concentration. Overall, our findings highlight that eCO2 concentration and N addition make microbial communities towards ecosystem health that may mitigate Cd stress, and provide new insights into the microbiology supporting phytoremediation for Cd contaminated sites in current and future global change scenarios.

Elevated atmospheric CO2 promotes the contribution of autotrophic nitrification to N2O emissions in a typical summer maize field

Elevated atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration generally stimulates nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions from upland soils, leading to a promoted feedback on climate change. However, the underlying mechanisms on how elevated CO2 (eCO2) stimulates N2O emissions from nitrogen (N)-fertilized upland soils remain poorly known. Here, we investigated the effects of eCO2 on soil N2O production pathways and associated gross N transformation rates, as well as on nitrifying and denitrifying microbes. Based on a 13 years of free-air CO2 enrichment (FACE) platform, we found that N2O emissions were significantly increased by 46.7% under eCO2 in a typical summer-maize field. The 15N tracing experiment showed that autotrophic nitrification rate was significantly increased by 11.6% under eCO2, coincided with the significantly higher abundance and shift composition of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) under eCO2. Also, eCO2 enhanced gross ammonium (NH4+) immobilization rate but reduced gross nitrate (NO3−) immobilization rate. Autotrophic nitrification accounted for approximately 78% of N2O emissions, followed by heterotrophic nitrification (about 19%) and denitrification (about 3%). It was found that eCO2 increased carbon (C) deposition in soil, which could affect the availability of soil labile organic C and N and alter the composition and activity of nitrifiers. These changes promoted the N2O production derived from autotrophic nitrification, resulting in higher N2O emissions under eCO2. We could deduce that nitrifier denitrification contributed to the increased N2O emissions greatly under eCO2, derived by strongly stimulated ammonia oxidation and microbial respiration (i.e. higher soil CO2 emissions) caused suboxic conditions (i.e. lower soil oxygen (O2) concentration), along with higher abundance ratios of (nirK+nirS)/nosZ. Our results suggest that controlling autotrophic nitrification appropriately is crucial for mitigating N2O emissions from upland soils under rising atmospheric CO2 concentration.

Elevated carbon dioxide concentrations increase the risk of Cd exposure in rice.

Since the Industrial Revolution, crops have been exposed to various changes in the environment, including elevated atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration and cadmium (Cd) pollution in soil. However, information about how combined changes affect crop is limited. Here, we have investigated the changes of japonica and indica rice subspecies seedlings under elevated CO2 level (1200 ppm) and Cd exposure (5 μM Cd) conditions compared with ambient CO2 level (400 ppm) and without Cd exposure in CO2 growth chambers with hydroponic experiment. The results showed that elevated CO2 levels significantly promoted seedling growth and rescued the growth inhibition under Cd stress. However, the elevated CO2 levels led to a significant increase in the shoot Cd accumulation of the two rice subspecies. Especially, the increase of shoot Cd accumulation in indica rice was more than 50% compared with control. Further investigation revealed that the decreases in the photosynthetic pigments and photosynthetic rates caused by Cd were attenuated by the elevated CO2 levels. In addition, elevated CO2 levels increased the non-enzymatic antioxidants and significantly enhanced the ascorbate peroxidase (APX) and glutathione reductase (GR) activities, alleviating the lipid peroxidation and reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation induced by Cd. Overall, the research revealed how rice responded to the elevated CO2 levels and Cd exposure, which can help modify agricultural practices to ensure food security and food safety in a future high-CO2 world.

Manipulating atmospheric CO2 concentration induces shifts in wheat leaf and spike microbiomes and in Fusarium pathogen communities.

Changing atmospheric composition represents a source of uncertainty in our assessment of future disease risks, particularly in the context of mycotoxin producing fungal pathogens which are predicted to be more problematic with climate change. To address this uncertainty, we profiled microbiomes associated with wheat plants grown under ambient vs. elevated atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration [CO2] in a field setting over 2 years. We also compared the dynamics of naturally infecting versus artificially introduced Fusarium spp. We found that the well-known temporal dynamics of plant-associated microbiomes were affected by [CO2]. The abundances of many amplicon sequence variants significantly differed in response to [CO2], often in an interactive manner with date of sample collection or with tissue type. In addition, we found evidence that two strains within Fusarium - an important group of mycotoxin producing fungal pathogens of plants - responded to changes in [CO2]. The two sequence variants mapped to different phylogenetic subgroups within the genus Fusarium, and had differential [CO2] responses. This work informs our understanding of how plant-associated microbiomes and pathogens may respond to changing atmospheric compositions.

Biological Response of Invasive Parthenium Weed to Elevated Concentration of Atmospheric Carbon Dioxide and Soil Salinity

Climate change elements including elevated atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration and soil salinity significantly impact weed biology and management. In this study, we evaluated the performance of a highly invasive plant species, parthenium weed (Parthenium hysterophorus L.) grown at various soil salinity levels (ranging from 0 to 16 dS m−1) at two CO2 concentrations (ambient: 400 ppm and elevated: 700 ppm). The CO2 concentration and soil salinity individually affected various early growth attributes of parthenium weed. The interaction between CO2 and salinity was significant for chlorophyll index, stem dry weight and phenolics content. Parthenium weed plants grew taller (13%), achieved greater leaf area (28%) and produced more dry weight (24%) when raised under elevated as compared with the ambient CO2. Soil salinity had a dose-dependent, negative effect on various growth attributes, chlorophyll index, relative water content and phenolics content. Even the modest levels of salinity (4.2 to 4.6 dS m−1) caused 50% reduction in dry weights of leaves, roots and whole plants. Sodium ion (Na+) concentration peaked at the highest salinity level (16 dS m−1) as compared with the lower salinity levels (0 to 12 dS m−1). Overall, salinity had a negative effect on different growth variables but elevated CO2 improved growth and phenolics content regardless of the salt stress regime. Hence, parthenium weed could benefit from future atmospheric CO2 concentration and may invade some salt-affected areas.

Effects of dry spells on soil moisture and yield anomalies at a montane managed grassland site: A lysimeter climate experiment

AbstractThe frequency and severity of droughts in the Alps are expected to increase due to rising air temperatures and changes in precipitation regimes. Although biomass production in humid mountain areas tends to be energy limited rather than water limited, an increase in droughts may have negative impacts on the water availability and thus agricultural yields. This study aimed to analyse the impacts of dry spells on soil moisture and yield anomalies at a montane permanent grassland site in Austria. Dry spells in the time period from 2018 to 2020 were identified using the Standardized Precipitation Index, Palmer Drought Severity Index and the Soil Moisture Anomaly Index. Data from a lysimeter climate experiment were used to evaluate drought impacts on soil water storage and grassland yield under ambient and manipulated conditions. The results indicated the occurrence of three extreme droughts between 2018 and 2020. Although the studied grassland is generally considered a nonwater‐limited ecosystem, the most extreme drought in summer 2019 caused severe and extreme yield anomalies under ambient and heated conditions. Only mild yield anomalies were observed on plots with elevated atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration. This drought‐mitigating effect was attributed to the water savings enabled by partial stomatal closure under elevated CO2. The shorter dry spells in spring and late summer 2018 led to more diverse effects; mildly to moderately negative yield anomalies were found on the heated plots, whereas the anomalies tended to be less negative or even positive on plots under ambient temperature. In contrast, some time periods without water stress showed positive effects of heating on yield. These findings suggest that drought impacts on a humid montane grassland depend on both water availability and air temperature. Higher air temperature can have positive effects on yield if the ecosystem is energy limited. However, global warming suggests a tendency from energy to water limitation, in which the increased evaporative demand of the atmosphere aggravates soil moisture droughts and thus has potentially negative effects on yield.

The efficacy of Azotobacter chroococcum in altering maize plant-defense responses to armyworm at elevated CO2 concentration

Elevated atmospheric carbon dioxide (eCO2) concentrations can alter the carbon:nitrogen ratio and palatability of host plants for herbivorous insects, but rhizobacteria likely mitigate the alteration and influence physiological adaptation of insects. In this study, we conducted transcriptomic analysis of maize (Zea mays) response to Azotobacter chroococcum (AC) inoculation under eCO2 conditions in contrast to ambient CO2 (aCO2), and studied the effects of plant-defense change of maize under eCO2 on the oriental armyworm, Mythimna separata. Results showed that there were 16, 14, 16 and 135 differentially expressed genes that were associated with plant-defense response in maize leaves between aCO2-CK and aCO2-AC, eCO2-CK and eCO2-AC, aCO2-CK and eCO2-CK, aCO2-AC and eCO2-AC, respectively. Moreover, A. chroococcum inoculation and eCO2 influenced plant hormone signal transduction of maize. Interestingly, A. chroococcum inoculation significantly decreased the contents of JA (jasmonic acid) and JA-Ile (isoleucine conjugate of JA) in leaves, but eCO2 markedly increased contents of JA-Ile, JA and SA (salicylic acid). Compared to aCO2, eCO2 significantly decreased activity of protective enzyme (catalase), and increased activities of digestive (lipase and protease), protective (peroxidase) and detoxifying enzymes (carboxylesterase, Mixed-functional oxidase and glutathione s-transferase), prolonged developmental time, and decreased survival rate and body weight of larvae (P < 0.05). A. chroococcum inoculation significantly increased the activity of protective enzyme (catalase), and decreased the activities of detoxifying enzymes (carboxylesterase, glutathione s-transferase and mixed-functional oxidase), thus increased the growth rate and body weight of larvae in comparison with no-inoculation of A. chroococcum (P < 0.05). The indices of M. separata were significantly correlated with the foliar contents of JA, JA-Ile and SA (|r| = 0.44–0.85, P < 0.05), indicating that A. chroococcum inoculation altered the physiological adaptation of M. separata under eCO2 by disturbing defense substances in maize. Our results in understanding effects of A. chroococcum inoculation on maize resistance to herbivorous insects will be valuable for agricultural pest control in the future at eCO2 conditions.

The Impact of Drought, Heat and Elevated Carbon Dioxide Levels on Feed Grain Quality for Poultry Production

Climate change has wide-reaching consequences for agriculture by altering both the yield and nutritional composition of grains. This poses a significant challenge for the poultry industry which relies on large quantities of high-quality feed grains to support meat and egg production. The existing literature shows that elevated atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations (eCO2), heat and drought overall reduce grain yield and quality. However, these results are inconsistent, with some studies reporting small or large decreases and others even indicating potential improvements. These variations may occur because many studies only investigate one climate factor at a time, without considering interactions between factors. Additionally, most studies investigate just one grain type, rather than comparing grains and their morphophysiological differences. The present review offers a novel approach by investigating how eCO2, heat and drought interactively affect both the yield and nutritional composition of four key animal feed grains: wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), barley (Hordeum vulgare L.), maize (Zea mays L.) and sorghum (Sorghum bicolour L. Moench). The photosynthetic pathway is a key determinant of a plant’s response to climate factors, so this review compares grains with both C3 photosynthesis (wheat and barley) and C4 photosynthesis (maize and sorghum). The present review found that eCO2 may promote starch synthesis in C3 grains of wheat and barley, thereby improving grain yield but diluting protein, lipid, vitamin and mineral concentrations. This potential yield improvement is further counteracted by heat and drought which limit the photosynthetic rate. Unlike wheat and barley, C4 photosynthesis is not CO2-limited, so neither the yield nor the nutritional quality of maize and sorghum are significantly affected by eCO2. On the other hand, heat stress and drought reduce photosynthesis in maize and sorghum and may offer minimal increases in nutrient concentrations. This review highlights that while eCO2 may increase the yield of wheat and barley grains, this effect (i) dilutes nutrient concentration, (ii) is counteracted by heat and drought, and (iii) does not benefit C4 grains maize and sorghum. An additional novel insight is offered by discussing how the impacts of climate change on animal feed production may be mitigated using alternative crop management practices, plant breeding, feed processing and enzyme supplementation.

Effects of Elevated CO2 Concentration on Host Adaptability and Chlorantraniliprole Susceptibility in Spodoptera frugiperda.

Elevated atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations (eCO2) can affect both herbivorous insects and their host plants. The fall armyworm (FAW), Spodoptera frugiperda, is a highly polyphagous agricultural pest that may attack more than 350 host plant species and has developed resistance to both conventional and novel-action insecticides. However, the effects of eCO2 on host adaptability and insecticide resistance of FAW are unclear. We hypothesized that eCO2 might affect insecticide resistance of FAW by affecting its host plants. To test this hypothesis, we investigated the effect of eCO2 on (1) FAW's susceptibility to chlorantraniliprole after feeding on wheat, (2) FAW's population performance traits (including the growth and reproduction), and (3) changes in gene expression in the FAW by transcriptome sequencing. The toxicity of chlorantraniliprole against the FAW under eCO2 (800 µL/L) stress showed that the LC50 values were 2.40, 2.06, and 1.46 times the values at the ambient CO2 concentration (400 µL/L, aCO2) for the three generations, respectively. Under eCO2, the life span of pupae and adults and the total number of generations were significantly shorter than the FAW under aCO2. Compared to the aCO2 treatment, the weights of the 3rd and 4th instar larvae and pupae of FAW under eCO2 were significantly heavier. Transcriptome sequencing results showed that more than 79 detoxification enzyme genes in FAW were upregulated under eCO2 treatment, including 40 P450, 5 CarE, 17 ABC, and 7 UGT genes. Our results showed that eCO2 increased the population performance of FAW on wheat and reduced its susceptibility to chlorantraniliprole by inducing the expression of detoxification enzyme genes. This study has important implications for assessing the damage of FAW in the future under the environment of increasing atmospheric CO2 concentration.

Tree-Ring Stable Carbon Isotope-Based Mean Maximum Temperature Reconstruction in Northwest China and Its Connection with Atmospheric Circulations

The inter-annual stable carbon isotope ratio (δ13C) of three tree-ring cores of P. euphratica (Populus euphratica Oliv.) was determined from Ejina Oasis in Northwest China. A robust and representative δ13C chronology is generated from the three δ13C series using an arithmetic mean method. After eliminating the influence of the δ13C from elevated atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration, we obtained a carbon isotopic discrimination (Δ13C) chronology. According to the significant correlation between the tree-ring Δ13C and instrumental data, we reconstructed the mean maximum temperature anomalies from previous December to current September (TDS) for the period 1901–2011. The reconstruction explained 43.6% of the variance over the calibration period. Three high-temperature periods (1929–1965, 1972–1974, and 1992–2006) and three low-temperature periods (1906–1926, 1966–1968, and 1975–1991) were found in the reconstructed series. Comparisons between the reconstructed TDS and the observed mean temperature from previous December to current September in Anxi meteorological station and the temperature index in north-central China demonstrated the reconstructed TDS has the advantage of reliability and stability. The significant spatial correlation declared that the reconstruction has a broad spatial representation and can represent the temperature variation characteristics in a wide geographical area. In addition, we found that the area of Ejina Oasis is smaller (larger) when the mean maximum temperature is higher (lower), which may be due to a conjunction effect of natural and anthropogenic activities. Significant periodicities and correlations suggested that the TDS variations in Ejina Oasis were regulated by solar radiation and atmospheric circulations at the interannual and interdecadal time scales.

Global Climate Change Effects on Soil Microbial Biomass Stoichiometry in Alpine Ecosystems

Alpine ecosystems are sensitive to global climate change-factors, which directly or indirectly affect the soil microbial biomass stoichiometry. In this paper, we have compared the soil microbial biomass stoichiometry ratios of alpine ecosystems using the global average values. In the comparison, the responses and mechanisms of soil microbial biomass stoichiometry to nitrogen deposition, altered precipitation, warming, and elevated atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration in the alpine ecosystem were considered. The alpine ecosystem has a higher soil microbial-biomass-carbon-to-nitrogen ratio (MBC:MBN) than the global average. In contrast, the soil microbial-biomass-nitrogen-to-phosphorus (MBN:MBP) and carbon-to-phosphorus ratios (MBC:MBP) varied considerably in different types of alpine ecosystems. When compared with the global average values of these ratios, no uniform pattern was found. In response to the increase in nitrogen (N) deposition, on the one hand, microbes will adopt strategies to regulate extracellular enzyme synthesis and excrete excess elements to maintain stoichiometric balance. On the other hand, microbes may also alter their stoichiometry by storing excess N in their bodies to adapt to the increased N in the environment. Thus, a decrease in MBC:MBN and an increase in MBN:MBP are observed. In addition, N deposition directly and indirectly affects the soil fungal-to-bacterial ratio (F:B), which in turn changes the soil microbial biomass stoichiometry. For warming, there is no clear pattern in the response of soil microbial biomass stoichiometry in alpine ecosystems. The results show diverse decreasing, increasing, and unchanging patterns. Under reduced precipitation, microbial communities in alpine ecosystems typically shift to a fungal dominance. The latter community supports a greater carbon-to-nitrogen ratio (C:N) and thus an increased soil MBC:MBN. However, increased precipitation enhances N effectiveness and exacerbates the leaching of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and phosphorus (P) from alpine ecosystem soils. As a result, a decrease in the soil MBC:MBN and an increase in the soil MBN:MBP are evident. Elevated atmospheric CO2 usually has little effect on the soil MBC:MBN in alpine ecosystems, mainly because of two reasons. These are: (i) N is the main limiting factor in alpine ecosystems, and (ii) alpine ecosystems accumulate higher soil organic carbon (SOC) and microbes and preferentially decompose “old” carbon (C) stocks. The response of soil microbial stoichiometry to global climate change factors in alpine ecosystems is diverse, and the impact pathways are complex. Future studies need to focus on the combined effects of multiple global climate change factors on microbial stoichiometry and the mechanism of microbial stoichiometric balance.

Impacts of Future Climate Change and Atmospheric CO2 Concentration on Ecosystem Water Retention Service

AbstractTerrestrial ecosystem water retention (TEWR) service is subject to climate change and elevated atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration (eCO2), however, the relevant processes by which future climate change and eCO2 affect TEWR are poorly understood. Here, we use the factorial simulation experiments from the Inter‐Sectoral Impact Model Intercomparison Project to address this research question. The experiments are based on three dynamic global vegetation models forced with the same climate change scenarios. Results suggest that compared to the preindustrial level, during 2070–2099, (a) TEWR change is highly uncertain, especially in the Southern Hemisphere. (b) Climate change will dominate the pattern of future TEWR change compared with eCO2. (c) Precipitation and runoff change will dominate the future TEWR change in various regions, and the direct role of evapotranspiration (ET) on TEWR will be relatively small. (d) eCO2 will mainly affect vegetation dynamics in energy‐limited regions to affect the runoff, and consequently affecting TEWR change. (e) eCO2 will decrease ET and increase the runoff, resulting in a slight TWER change. These findings improve the understanding of the responses of TEWR to future climate change and eCO2.

Hydrological feedbacks on peatland CH4 emission under warming and elevated CO2: A modeling study

Peatland carbon cycling is critical for the land–atmosphere exchange of greenhouse gases, particularly under changing environments. Warming and elevated atmospheric carbon dioxide (eCO2) concentrations directly enhance peatland methane (CH4) emission, and indirectly affect CH4 processes by altering hydrological conditions. An ecosystem model ELM-SPRUCE, the land model of the E3SM model, was used to understand the hydrological feedback mechanisms on CH4 emission in a temperate peatland under a warming gradient and eCO2 treatments. We found that the water table level was a critical regulator of hydrological feedbacks that affect peatland CH4 dynamics; the simulated water table levels dropped as warming intensified but slightly increased under eCO2. Evaporation and vegetation transpiration determined the water table level in peatland ecosystems. Although warming significantly stimulated CH4 emission, the hydrological feedbacks leading to a reduced water table mitigated the stimulating effects of warming on CH4 emission. The hydrological feedback for eCO2 effects was weak. The comparison between modeled results with data from a field experiment and a global synthesis of observations supports the model simulation of hydrological feedbacks in projecting CH4 flux under warming and eCO2. The ELM-SPRUCE model showed relatively small parameter-induced uncertainties on hydrological variables and their impacts on CH4 fluxes. A sensitivity analysis confirmed a strong hydrological feedback in the first three years and the feedback diminished after four years of warming. Hydrology-moderated warming impacts on CH4 cycling suggest that the indirect effect of warming on hydrological feedbacks is fundamental for accurately projecting peatland CH4 flux under climate warming.

Incorporating carbon dioxide into a stoichiometric producer-grazer model.

Climate change models predict increases in atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration. As ecosystems equilibrate with the atmosphere, stimulation of photosynthesis is expected to occur. However, growth limitation due to soil nutrients may potentially limit sequestration of carbon. Additionally, changes in producer nutritional quality may cause a decline in grazer populations. Here we extend the WKL model to allow for consideration of the impacts of elevated atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration on producer-grazer dynamics. We do so by explicitly tracking the free carbon in the medium and allowing the producer's growth rate to be limited by available carbon instead of light. This model is analyzed using primarily local bifurcation analysis. Overall, these analyses show that carbon sequestration due to increased atmospheric carbon dioxide can be limited by insufficient available phosphorus. Furthermore, increased atmospheric carbon dioxide will cause decreased stoichiometric quality of producers where available phosphorus is limiting.

Modelling the growth response to climate change and management of Tectona grandis L. f. using the 3-PGmix model

Teak ( Tectona grandis L. f.) is a native tree species of India. It is one of the most desirable timber species because of its strength, fine texture, and durability. Its growth is strongly dependent on the climatic conditions, but empirical data are often unavailable to support management decisions. The physiological principles for predicting growth incorporated in the 3-PGmix model make it a useful tool in modelling the growth responses and management in the changing climate. We assessed that under elevated atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) concentration and no thinning, teak would store more carbon than currently. Uncertainty and lack of scientific understanding about the growth response to climate change and thinning regimes have created challenges in teak sustainability, both regionally and globally. This research examines climate change and management implications on teak growth in India using the 3-PGmix model. The 3-PGmix model was coupled with climate scenarios (Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP) 4.5 and 8.5) to forecast growth response up to the year 2100 with 1981–2010 as the baseline under thinning (G-quality, P-quality) regimes. Thinning under G-quality is performed at earlier stand age than P-quality, and then simulations under ‘no thinning’ based on stocking/ha at different thinning intensity. Under ‘no thinning’, predicted net primary productivity (NPP) for RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 became 5.77 t/ha/year and 5.28 t/ha/year in 2100. However, under increasing CO2, it became 7.39 t/ha/year and 8.22 t/ha/year respectively in 2100. In the future, increasing CO2 would be the dominating factor for an increase in teak growth; however, abnormal precipitation and warmer temperature could produce an unforeseen growth condition. The carbon stock and CO2 sequestration are predicted to be higher under no thinning, which signifies the CO2 fertilisation effect in teak. The set of parameters used in 3-PGmix offers an opportunity to predict teak responses to future climatic conditions and management treatments.

Modulations in carbon and nitrogen assimilation patterns in rice plants exposed to elevated atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations

Aim: To study the influence of elevated atmospheric CO2 concentrations on the carbon and nitrogen assimilation patterns in rice plants. Methodology: Rice (Oryza sativa) plants were placed in Open Top Chambers (OTCs) and exposed to elevated levels of CO2. The treatments consisted of three levels of CO2 (398, 550 and 750 µmol mol-1) and three levels of nitrogen (0, 150 and 200 kg ha-1) and replicated five times in completely randomized design. Results: Leaf nitrogen was significantly reduced by 10.6 % and 6.5 % during later stages in rice plants exposed to CO2 @ 750 µmol mol-1 and 550 µmol mol-1, respectively over the ambient CO2. Rice plants under elevated CO2 did not exhibit any variations in Nitrate Reductase activity in leaves in comparison to ambient CO2 at tillering stage. Interestingly, NRase activity in leaves decreased at flowering stage whereas NRase activity in roots increased at same stage. The highest mean nitrogen values (0.58, 0.89 and 1.35 %) were observed in Camb (ambient CO2 concentration) and the lowest values (0.51, 0.80 and 1.27 %) in C750 in roots, straw and grains, respectively. Elevated CO2 @ 750 µmol mol-1 significantly increased the above ground biomass (straw and grain) by 15.6 and 40.1 %, respectively, over the ambient CO2 of 398 µmol mol-1. Interpretation: Elevated CO2 enhanced the grain productivity but affected the quality of rice grains. Thus, excessive nitrogen fertilization above the current recommendation is necessary for future high CO2 environments.

A superweed in the making: adaptations of Parthenium hysterophorus to a changing climate. A review

Parthenium weed (Parthenium hysterophorus L.) is a globally invasive plant with significant negative impacts on the environment, agriculture, economy, and health. This invasion problem is likely to be exacerbated by climate change. Elevated atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration ([CO2]), high ambient temperatures, heatwaves, and droughts will facilitate the establishment, range expansion, and interference potential of this invasive species while making its management more difficult. Here, for the first time, we review the potential impact of climate change elements on parthenium weed biology and management at regional and global levels. We establish that (1) parthenium weed plants morphologically and physiologically adapt to sustain or promote their growth, fecundity, competitive ability, and allelopathic effect under most climate change scenarios; (2) climate change elements can reduce the relative vigor of neighboring plants, especially C4 grasses, in competition with parthenium weed, providing this invasive species a competitive edge; (3) elevated [CO2] has the most pronounced positive effect on parthenium weed performance compared to other climate change elements; (4) the efficacy of a widely used herbicide, glyphosate, may be reduced on parthenium weed grown under elevated [CO2]; (5) mixed effects have been reported for biological control agents, with some losing ground, while others are maintaining or improving their efficacy; and (6) a greater risk of spread and range expansion under sustained climate change will pose greater challenges for management in natural and managed ecosystems. There has been a disturbing transition of this weed from noncropped landscapes to agroecosystems in response to recent climatic and land use changes. All evidence presented in this review suggests that the situation will be greatly aggravated if drastic management interventions are not implemented. Therefore, the research, policy, and outreach focus must be revisited and revamped considering the impacts of climate change to develop pragmatic solutions to combat this “superweed”.

Effect of Different Climate Change Variables on the Ecology and Management of Sesbania cannabina through Glyphosate.

An elevated atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration and frequent droughts are two anticipated climate change scenarios in which certain invasive weeds may develop competitive advantages over crops and adversely impact productivity and herbicide efficacy. Hence, a study was conducted to explore the effect of different climatic scenarios on the growth and management of Sesbania cannabina (Retz.) Pers with glyphosate. The variables investigated were two CO2 concentrations (400 and 700 ppm), two soil moisture levels (100% and 50% of field capacity (FC)), and three glyphosate rates (0 (control), 517 (50% of recommended rate), and 1034 g ae ha−1 (recommended rate)). CO2 concentrations and soil moisture levels had different effects on the growth and management of S. cannabina. Overall, 100% FC and elevated [CO2] of 700 ppm recorded the maximum plant height (38 cm), leaves per plant (20), growth index (60), chlorophyll content (SPAD value 37), and dry biomass (3 g) in comparison with ambient [CO2] of 400 ppm and 50% FC treatment. The recommended glyphosate application gave 100% weed biomass reduction; however, efficacy was reduced (63%) when applied at 50% of the recommended rate under elevated [CO2] of 700 ppm and 50% FC conditions.
