Preparation of matrix-matched calibration standards for accurate determination of elemental concentrations in uric acid stones by LA-ICP-MS.

Accurate determination of elemental concentrations in uric acid (UA) stones is crucial for understanding their formation process. However, the lack of matrix-matched calibration standards has limited the application of laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) in this field. This study addresses this limitation by preparing a synthetic UA precipitate (UA-1) doped with 17 elements using a recrystallization method. Reference concentrations of these elements were measured using pneumatic nebulization-ICP-MS (PN-ICP-MS) for calibration purposes. The synthetic standard was characterized through 30 random spot analyses, demonstrating a homogeneity of approximately 5%. Using this synthetic standard, a reliable analytical method was developed, achieving limits of detection (LODs) ranging from 0 to 0.42 μg g-1. The method's accuracy, with relative deviations between -8.33% and 0 and correlation coefficients (R2) greater than 0.99, confirms its reliability. Additionally, elemental distribution differences observed across various zones in a real UA stone suggest that this method offers a promising approach for the precise analysis of elemental concentrations in UA stones.

Geochemical study of groundwater in the Oued El Hatiba Basin, pre-Saharan Atlas, eastern Algeria

ABSTRACT The Oued El Hatiba Basin, located at the eastern boundary of the Aures massif, constitutes the main massif of the pre-Saharan Atlas in eastern Algeria. The area is characterized by a semi-arid climate. Geologically, the basin features a succession of marls at the base, overlain by Cretaceous limestones, covered by Plio-Quaternary sediments composed of alluvium and sand. The Babar Dam, with a capacity of 41 hm3, is situated in this basin, draining an area of 567 km2 along the Larab wadi. It is intended for irrigation of surrounding lands and the supply of potable water to neighboring communities. The analysis of major element concentrations from various sampled water points reveals that the waters exhibit dominant facies: chloride–calcium (48.88%), sulfate–calcium (24.44%), bicarbonate–calcium (15.55%), magnesium bicarbonate (08.88%), and magnesium chloride (02.22%). These chemical facies are determined by the aridity of the climate, water–rock interaction, dissolution, and mineral precipitation, which are mediated by cationic exchanges throughout the water flow toward its outlet. The calculation of mineral saturation indices in the water indicates that only carbonate minerals tend to precipitate, notably calcite and dolomite, while evaporitic minerals (gypsum and halite) tend towards dissolution.

Assessment of landscape impact on snow chemical composition in terms of mineral geochemical exploration

In areas with cold climate seasonal snowpack is an attractive sampling material for geochemical exploration of deep mineral accumulations. However, previous studies on assessment of exploration efficiency of snow cover have paid little attention to snow composition variability conditioned by local landscape structure.The layered sampling of snow sections was performed in different landscape settings of the local area. The research area is characterized by the absence of ore mineralization zones and low anthropogenic load. The physical-chemical parameters and concentration of wide range of elements were identified in snowmelt. Multi-component data was integrated by means of factor principal component analysis. Besides, additive and differential geochemical indexes were used. The classification snow models were developed using hierarchical cluster analysis. The variance of chemical elements distribution and factor models of geochemical pattern were compared before and after reduction of background fluctuation. In terms of variation coefficient values of chemical elements the area has background parameters of chemical inhomogeneity. In total variance a lateral component prevails over a vertical one. The highest concentrations of chemical elements were found in snow section of forest landscape. It is necessary to take into account the fact of geochemical background fluctuation when interpreting the data of metal assay snow survey.After the reduction of lateral geochemical background fluctuation, the factor model has better classified the chemical elements in terms of their connection with soluble and insoluble occurrence forms. The values of differential index of liquid and solid phases have a similar satisfactory vertical variability in different landscapes. The analysis of chemical elements concentration reveals snow horizons that were or are affected by thaw and percolating water. The snow bottom layer, which is sampled at geochemical exploration, is not strong influenced by elution.

Geochemical study of UHP serpentinites in southwestern Tianshan, China and its implications for trace elements deep recycling

Serpentinites play a crucial role in the recycling of elements and volatiles in subduction zones. We studied the geochemistry of Changawuzi serpentinites from Chinese southwestern Tianshan, which underwent ultrahigh-pressure (UHP) metamorphism. The bulk rock compositions of the serpentinites suggest that Changawuzi serpentinites originated from a variably depleted mantle and were subsequently enriched in fluid-mobile elements (FMEs) during initial serpentinization. Integrated analyses of trace element concentrations (Cs, U, As, and Sb), Sr–Nd–Pb isotopic compositions, and geological context collectively indicate that serpentinization likely occurred within the interior of the subducted slab. During the early stages of subduction, the concentrations of rare earth elements (REE), high-field-strength elements (HFSE), and other trace elements (such as Cs, Rb, Ba, Th, and U) decrease from low-grade lizardite to high-grade antigorite, as well as from primary clinopyroxene to metamorphic diopside. FMEs, particularly boron (B), are significantly enriched in lizardite, and the majority are liberated during prograde subduction, resulting in the metamorphic transformation from lizardite to antigorite. The uptake and variation of Sb and As in Changawuzi serpentinites are relatively minor. At peak metamorphic conditions, olivine, Ti-chondrodite and Ti-clinohumite become the main minerals hosting trace elements (such as REE, B, Sb, As and Li) that were released during partial antigorite dehydration and clinopyroxene re-equilibration. Ti-chondrodite/Ti-clinohumite as isolated grains or as lamellae within metamorphic olivine have the potential to carry HFSE, FMEs (particularly B and Li) and H2O into the deeper mantle beyond the dehydration of serpentinites, potentially impacting arc magmatism and the global cycling of these elements.

Rare earth element patterns in sediments from the Great Lakes basin

This study presents a comprehensive analysis of rare earth element (REE) concentrations in >100 sediment samples from Lakes Erie and Huron, two of the North American Great Lakes. Significant intra- and inter-lake variability in REE concentrations is observed for both lakes Erie and Huron (<10 μg/g < versus <6 mg/g ƩREE, respectively). Light (L) REE were enriched over heavy (H) REE in surface sediment samples across both lakes, particularly in the North Channel of Lake Huron. Sediment cores from both lakes contained REE concentrations that are equally variable over time and correlated with major elements and other trace metals, reflective of the strong control of sediment accumulation rates on REE concentrations. Sequential extractions show that REE are predominantly associated with the residual (silicate) fraction (>50%) and likely originated from geogenic sources (basin weathering). However, considerable REE fractions (up to 16%) were also associated with oxide, phosphate minerals and organic/reducible material, particularly for the LREE. We attribute this apportionment and LREE enrichment to aqueous complexation and export from the water column. Finally, REE normalization and pattern-fitting reveal positive Ce anomalies (up to 16.2) in specific locations that could be indicative of hypolimnic redox gradients, whereas minor Gd and Eu anomalies (0.9 for Eu, and 1.02 for Gd, on average) likely relate to the parent rock signature. Our findings contribute valuable baseline data and insights into the complex interplay of geological, hydrodynamic, and environmental factors influencing REE distribution patterns in these lake sediments.

Riverine sediment geochemistry and its dispersal pattern on the western Sunda Shelf

Understanding sediment provenance in continental shelf basins is essential for reconstructing paleoenvironmental changes, enhancing insights into sedimentary dynamics, and elucidating their contributions to the global carbon cycle. To decipher sediment provenances and enhance comprehension of the sediment dispersal patterns and the factors governing geochemical compositions on the Sunda Shelf, we conducted an exhaustive analysis of trace elemental concentrations and the isotopic ratios of strontium (87Sr/86Sr) and neodymium (εNd) in the silicate fractions of 35 surface sediment samples. These samples were collected from the western Sunda Shelf and its proximate major river end-members, namely, the Mekong, Rajang, Pahang, and Kelantan Rivers. Through the application of various statistical methodologies, including classical cluster analysis, Principal Component Analysis (PCA), the La-Sc-Th discrimination diagram, and an array of elemental ratios, we identified three distinct geochemical provinces on the Sunda Shelf. Each province is defined by unique geochemical signatures indicative of varied sediment sources or provenances. This distinction was primarily attributed to pronounced sediment heterogeneity, reflecting lithologic variances from the diverse river end-members. In pursuit of a holistic understanding of sediment provenance in the region, SrNd isotopic data was also integrated from prior studies encompassing the eastern Sunda Shelf and the southern South China Sea. By utilizing the SrNd mixing model, complemented with Monte-Carlo simulations, we estimated the sediment contributions from surrounding river end-members to the southern South China Sea basin. According to the model, the Mekong River emerges as the principal sedimentary source of the Sunda continental shelf and the southern South China Sea, attributed to its substantial sediment outputs. Additionally, the model has identified significant contributions from the Rajang, Pahang, and Kelantan rivers, particularly in offshore regions near their estuaries. Further, this study revealed the previously underappreciated influence of South China's rivers, namely the Red and Pearl Rivers, on the eastern Sunda Shelf and deeper southern South China Sea region beyond the continental shelf. This study not only delineates the dominant sediment sources influencing the Sunda Shelf and the South China Sea but also underscores the importance of considering a broad spectrum of river end-members to understand sedimentary dynamics in an active marine environment.

Impact of PM2.5 filter extraction solvent on oxidative potential and chemical analysis

ABSTRACT Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) is hypothesized to induce oxidative stress, and has been linked to acute and chronic adverse health effects. To better understand the risks and underlying mechanisms following exposure, PM2.5 is collected onto filters but prior to toxicological analysis, particles must be removed from filters. There is no standard method for filter extraction, which creates the possibility that the methods of extraction selected can alter the chemical composition and ultimately the biological implications. In this study, comparisons were made between extraction solvents (methanol (MeOH), dichloromethane (DCM), 0.9% saline, and Milli-Q water) and the results of oxidative potential and elemental concentration analysis of PM2.5 collected across sites in Arkansas, USA. Significant differences were observed between solvents, with DCM having significantly different results compared to all other extraction solvents (p ≤ 0.001). Significant correlations between element, black carbon, and PM2.5 concentrations and oxidative potential were observed. The observed correlations were extraction solvent dependent. For example, in saline extracted samples, oxidative potential had significant negative correlations with: Ba, Cd, Ce, Co, Ga, Mn and significant positive correlations with: Cr, Ni, Th, U. While in MeOH extracted samples, significant positive correlations were only between oxidative potential and Ga, U and significant negative correlations with V. This indicates that PM2.5 samples extracted with different solvents will yield different conclusions about the causal components. This study highlights the importance of filter extraction methods in interpretation of oxidative potential results and comparisons between studies. Implications: While there is no standard method for PM2.5 filter extraction, variation of extraction methods impact analytical results. This project identifies that extraction method variation, particularly extraction solvent selection, leads to discrepancies in chemical and toxicological analysis for PM2.5 collected on the same filter. This work highlights the need for methods standardization to support accurate comparisons between PM2.5 research studies, thus providing better understanding of PM2.5 across the globe.

Revisiting the Concepts of Centre and Peripheries in Islamic Art with Geographic Information Systems (GIS): the Creations of Western Islamic Societies

Abstract The aim of this paper is to review the concepts of centre and peripheries in Mediterranean Islamic art during the late Middle Ages. Traditionally, the idea of a unique Eastern production centre was widespread in historiographical debates; however, in the framework of current research projects, the need to review the well-established concepts of centre and peripheries has been identified. In this context, this paper considers the geographical distribution of muqarnaṣ in the Mediterranean basin between the twelfth and fifteenth centuries from the Almoravid period. In this framework, a double aspect has been analysed to examine: 1) how muqarnaṣ spread from the Almoravid Empire to other Mediterranean areas, and 2) if those Western muqarnaṣ can be related to the Eastern ones or if, on the contrary, they can be considered an independent manifestation of a new production centre located in an area traditionally considered peripheral. To achieve this aim, a geodatabase including the Mediterranean muqarnaṣ ensembles has been created. Different categorised analyses have been developed with a Geographic Information System (GIS), as well as an element concentration analysis, with the Heatmap plugin in the QGIS software, to determine where the centres with the highest concentrations of muqarnaṣ are located. On the basis of the different analyses, innovative cartographic materials have been developed and are included in the study. From the obtained results, it can be concluded that the traditional view of a unique production centre in the case of muqarnaṣ should be discarded.

Trace elements in the Upper Indus River Basin (UIRB) of Western Himalayas: Quantification, sources modeling, and impacts

This study conducted a comprehensive analysis of trace element concentrations in the Upper Indus River Basin (UIRB), a glacier-fed region in the Western Himalayas (WH), aiming to discern their environmental and anthropogenic sources and implications. Despite limited prior data, 69 samples were collected in 2019 from diverse sources within the UIRB, including mainstream, tributaries, and groundwater, to assess trace element concentrations. Enrichment factor (EF) results and comparisons with regional and global averages suggest that rising levels of Zn, Cd, and As may pose safety concerns for drinking water quality. Advanced multivariate statistical techniques such as principal component analysis (PCA), absolute principal component scores (APCS-MLR), Monte Carlo simulation (MCS), etc were applied to estimate the associated human health hazards and also identified key sources of trace elements. The 95th percentile of the MCS results indicates that the estimated total cancer risk for children is significantly greater than (>1000 times) the USEPA’s acceptable risk threshold of 1.0 × 10−6. The results classified most of the trace elements into two distinct groups: Group A (Li, Rb, Sr, U, Cs, V, Ni, TI, Sb, Mo, Ge), linked to geogenic sources, showed lower concentrations in the lower-middle river reaches, including tributaries and downstream regions. Group B (Pb, Nb, Cr, Zn, Be, Al, Th, Ga, Cu, Co), influenced by both geogenic and anthropogenic activities, exhibited higher concentrations near urban centers and midstream areas, aligning with increased municipal waste and agricultural activities. Furthermore, APCS-MLR source apportionment indicated that trace elements originated from natural geogenic processes, including rock-water interactions and mineral dissolution, as well as anthropogenic activities. These findings underscore the need for targeted measures to mitigate anthropogenic impacts and safeguard water resources for communities along the IRB and WH.

Investigating the elemental composition of Egyptian glauconite sediments by applying BCR sequential extraction procedure and some single extractants

This study assesses the elemental composition of Egyptian glauconite sediments, focusing on potentially toxic elements (PTEs) and macronutrients. The primary aim is to evaluate the feasibility of utilizing these sediments as a natural source of potassium for agricultural purposes, besides conventional chemical fertilizers like potassium sulfate. To quantify elemental content, chemical analysis was employed across five distinct grain size fractions after grinding glauconite rock. The assessment included potassium, calcium, sodium, and PTE concentrations, utilizing potassium chloride (KCl) and ammonium acetate lactate (AL Solution) as single extractants, and the BCR extraction protocol, in addition to measuring the pseudo-total content of these elements. Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectroscopy (ICP-OES) facilitated a comparative analysis of elemental concentrations. Results indicate PTE concentrations within European Union regulations, with an absence of cadmium. Glauconite samples contain approximately 3–3.3% potassium by weight, alongside significant amounts of essential macronutrients (calcium, magnesium) and micronutrients (copper, nickel, zinc) crucial for agriculture. BCR sequential extraction protocol results closely align with or slightly surpass pseudo-total content results. Notably, the AL Solution demonstrates high efficiency compared to KCl or acetic acid in the first step of the BCR method. BCR sequential protocol provides valuable insights into various elemental forms and potential mobility. Overall, this study reveals that glauconite has the potential to serve as a promising alternative potassium fertilizer without causing adverse environmental impacts.

Hydrochemical Characterization, Geothermometry, and Origin of Ain Al-Harrah Hot Spring and Its Relationship to Al-Lith Geothermal System, Saudi Arabia.

The Al-Lith geothermal field in western Saudi Arabia is a characteristic medium-high enthalpy geothermal system, exhibiting features associated with tectonic activities linked to the Red Sea rifting. Ain Al-Harrah hot spring is located in the Al-Lith field, with discharge temperatures varying from 56 to 81 °C. The determination of water temperature and composition in a geothermal reservoir is critical to the design of utilization strategies, surface production facilities, and choice of materials. This research presents a comprehensive hydrochemical characterization of the Ain Al-Harrah hot spring and its relationship with the underlying geothermal system. This study was conducted in two main phases; first, the fieldwork involved the collection of water samples from the hot spring, measuring the temperature, pH, and electrical conductivity (EC) of the water. The second phase involved laboratory analyses of the collected samples, including major and trace element analyses, isotopic analysis, and geothermometry. The dominant hydrogeochemical processes in the region were determined by analyzing the hydrochemistry of the water samples. Thermal waters analyzed exhibited high concentrations of Na+ (410-463 mg/L), HCO3 - (64.48-90 mg/L), and Cl- (472.76-581.95 mg/L), intermediate levels of K+ (50.2-93.0 mg/L), and low levels of Mg2+ (1.27-2.04 mg/L). The total dissolved solids (TDS) concentration ranges between 1830 and 2055 mg/L. The hot spring is categorized as Na-HCO3 type facies that are moderately alkaline, with pH values ranging between 7.9 and 8.2. Analysis of trace element concentrations revealed that the hydrochemical processes were primarily governed by the abundance and solubility of trace elements in the rocks surrounding the hot spring, the pH, and the temperature of the hot spring water. The stable isotope data for δD (-12.36 to 15.21%) and δ18O (-2.84 to -3.38%) provided evidence that the thermal spring is of meteoric origin. Based on Na-K-Ca, K2/Mg, and quartz geothermometers, the temperature range of the reservoir was determined to be between 150 and 205 °C. The temperature range suggests a medium-to-high enthalpy geothermal system.

Concentrations of Bioelements (Zn, Cu, Fe, Cr, Mg, Mn) in Serum and Bone Tissue of Aging Men Undergoing Hip Arthroplasty: Implications for Erectile Dysfunction.

Background: Erectile dysfunction (ED) stands out as one of the most prevalent sexual disorders in men, with its incidence progressively escalating with age. As delineated by the International Consultation Committee for Sexual Medicine on Definitions/Epidemiology/Risk Factors for Sexual Dysfunction, the prevalence of ED among men under 40 years is estimated to be within the range of 1-10%. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between the concentration of bioelements (Zn, Cu, Fe, Cr, Mg, and Mn) in the serum and bone tissue and the concentration of selected hormones in men with and without erectile dysfunction. Materials and methods: The retrospective cohort study included 152 men who underwent total hip arthroplasty for hip osteoarthritis at the Department of Orthopaedic Traumatology and Musculoskeletal Oncology at the Pomeranian Medical University in Szczecin. Certain exclusion criteria were applied to ensure the integrity of the study. These included individuals with diabetes, a history of cancer, alcohol abuse, liver or kidney failure, New York Heart Association (NYHA) class III or IV heart failure, and those taking medications that affect bone metabolism, such as mineral supplements, neuroleptics, chemotherapeutic agents, immunosuppressants, corticosteroids, or antidepressants. Patients with hypogonadism or infertility were excluded from the study. Results: The study showed an association between bioT concentrations and Cu concentrations in both patients with and without erectile dysfunction. A correlation between bioactive testosterone and Cr concentrations was also observed in both groups. Patients with erectile dysfunction showed a relationship between bioT concentration and Zn concentration, TT concentration and Mn concentration, FT concentration and Zn concentration, and E2 concentration and Cr concentration. An analysis of elemental concentrations in bone tissue showed an association between FT and Mg and Mn concentrations, but only in patients with erectile dysfunction. In patients without erectile dysfunction, a correlation was observed between FT and Cu concentrations. A correlation was also observed between bioT concentrations and Mg, Mn, and Zn concentrations, but only in patients with erectile dysfunction. In patients without erectile dysfunction, a correlation was observed between bioT and Cu concentrations. Conclusions: Studying the relationship between the concentration of bioelements (Zn, Cu, Fe, Cr, Mg, and Mn) in the serum and bone tissue and the concentration of selected hormones in men may be important in explaining the etiology of the problem. The study of the concentration of Zn and Cu in bone tissue and serum showed that these two elements, regardless of the place of accumulation, may be related to the concentration of androgens in men.

Correlation between induced polarization and sulfide content of rock samples obtained from seafloor hydrothermal mounds in the Okinawa Trough, Japan

AbstractThe physical properties of seafloor massive sulfides are crucial for interpreting sub-seafloor images from geophysical surveys, shedding light on the evolution of seafloor mineral deposits. While some studies have explored the relationship between electrical properties and the volume of conductive minerals in rocks from seafloor massive sulfide deposits, they primarily focused on artificial samples, leaving the characteristics of natural samples less understood. Moreover, there has been no comprehensive study detailing the general characteristics of electrical properties, particularly chargeability and relaxation time, in relation to the volumetric fraction of sulfides in rocks from massive sulfide mounds in typical hydrothermal areas. In this study, we employed complex conductivity measurements, elemental concentration analysis, and mineral content identification on to rock samples from the active hydrothermal zones of the Okinawa Trough in Japan. The complex conductivity observed was remarkably high, with a pronounced imaginary component and a broad frequency range. This is attributed to induced polarization extending beyond our measurement range. The rock samples were rich in conductive sulfide minerals such as pyrite, chalcopyrite, and galena. Using the Cole–Cole rock physics model, we established a correlation between rock chargeability and relaxation time coefficient with the volume fraction of conductive sulfide minerals, which deviated from previous findings. The intensity of induced polarization was notably higher than anticipated in earlier studies using artificial samples. Furthermore, we observed a distinct positive correlation between the coefficient of relaxation time and the increase in sulfide volume, likely due to the geometric characteristics of the sulfide minerals. Our findings suggest that rocks in massive sulfide mounds may generally construct sulfide clusters that lengthen the conductive path of the electrical carrier. Graphical Abstract

MINERAL COMPOSITION OF MANDIBULAR BONE TISSUE IN SIMULATED PERIODONTITIS DURING METABOLIC ACIDOSIS

Destructive changes in the mandibular cancellous bone tissue determine the severity of periodontal diseases and affect their treatment outcomes. The imbalance between macro- and microelements leads to structural and functional changes in the spongy bone tissue of the lower jaw, and when being combined with the inflammatory process in the soft tissues of the periodontium leads to the tooth loss. Mineral elements deposited in the bones are included in the body buffer systems and are able to influence the metabolic processes of the macroorganism by mobilizing them into the bloodstream.&#x0D; The aim of the study is to carry out a comparative analysis of mineral element concentrations in the bone tissue of the alveolar process of the lower jaw in rats with experimentally induced periodontitis under conditions of simulated metabolic disorders and following pharmacotherapeutic correction.&#x0D; Materials and methods. The reseach was conducted on 80 white outbred sexually mature male rats aged 2-4 months and weighing 120-200 g. The animals were divided into 5 groups (16 in each): two control groups representing NC (negative control) and PC (conditionally positive control) and three experimental groups: I Group, II Group, III Group. The NC group consisted of animals kept on a standard vivarium diet throughout the experiment. The animals of PC, I – III Groups were exposed to peridontitis simulation: the rats received 0.04% solution of ammonium chloride (NH4Cl) per os within 30 days. Animals in group III (experimental periodontitis) received intramuscular injections of 5% meldonium dihydrate solution in a dose of 0.2 mg/kg of body weight. The rats in group IV (periodontitis treatment) received "Calcium glycerophosphate" (a first-generation calcium supplement) in a dose of 133 mg/kg. Group V (combination treatment) received both the meldonium dihydrate solution and calcium glycerophosphate in the same respective doses. Tissue levels of zinc, magnesium, strontium, calcium, sodium, potassium, phosphorus, and iron were measured using atomic absorption (zinc, magnesium), atomic emission (strontium, calcium, sodium, potassium), and photometric (phosphorus, iron) methods.&#x0D; Results. The change in the amount of elements in the mandibular cancellous bone tissue reveals irregularity and different mechanisms over the course of the mineralization process, depending on the chosen means of correction. The findings obtained suggest that the corrective treatments (meldonium dihydrate, calcium glycerophosphate, or their combination) promoted gradual bone density improvement through the accumulation of studied elements in the rat mandible. This indicates potential reversibility of pathological changes at this experimental stage.&#x0D; Conclusions. The cancellous part of the mandible in rats appears to be a dynamic system, responding actively to both detrimental factors and corrective interventions by altering the content and proportions of macro- and microelements.

Assessing impacts of cemeteries on water quality in an urban headwater watershed with mixed human‐built infrastructure

AbstractCemeteries are understudied integral components to urban watersheds, which provide ecosystem services but can also export nutrients, trace elements, and other contaminants to nearby water bodies. In this study, we focus on Meadowbrook Creek, an urban headwater stream in Syracuse, New York (USA), which has shown significant nitrate contributions from a local cemetery. We collected biweekly surface water samples over the course of 1 year from 2022 to 2023 for analysis of major and trace elemental concentrations including Na, Ca, Mg, K, F, Cl, sulfate, and nitrate. Here, we aim to assess the impact of various human infrastructures on urban stream water quality with a particular focus on the cemetery and nitrate. A comparison between the new dataset in this study and previously reported water chemistry data in Meadowbrook in 2012 suggests a decade‐long impact of road salting and the cemetery on water quality particularly with respect to Na, Cl, and nitrate. Sulfate, Mg, Ca, and K are likely mainly geogenic. Stable nitrogen isotope data, the usage of concrete or steel vaults in the cemetery in the past 50 years, and the lack of correlation between nitrate and fluoride concentrations in stream water argue against burial decay products being a major source of nitrate to the stream. Instead, other nitrate sources that exist in the cemetery such as, fertilizer, decaying plant material, and wastewater, are more viable dominant nitrate sources. In addition, nitrate loading calculations indicate that the groundwater‐connected reach, including the cemetery, acts as an annual net sink for nitrate despite the seasonally varying sink‐source patterns.

Mechanistic Basis of Silicon Mediated Cold Stress Tolerance in Alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.)

AbstractCold stress (CS) impact on crops is one of the critical constraints for sustainable and smart agricultural production. CS adversely affects plants leading to growth retardation, necrosis, chlorosis, and significant yield loss. The objective of this study was to explore the mechanistic basis of silicon (Si) in enhancing CS tolerance in alfalfa plants. The fluorescence staining indicated that Si-reduced the intensity of CS-induced superoxide radical (O2•–) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) generation in plants that improved plant photosynthesis, cellular integrity, and alfalfa biomass production under CS. The exogenous supplementation of Si significantly restored the endogenous Si status accompanied by the upregulation of NIP (nodulin 26-like intrinsic protein) genes NIP2, NIP5;1, and NIP6;1 in alfalfa. The elemental concentration analysis revealed that exogenous silicon (E-Si) triggers the increase of calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), and sulfur (S) in plants subjected to Si-supplementation compared to the plants cultivated without Si under CS. The application of Si significantly increased the activity of antioxidant enzymes including superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), and glutathione reductase (GR). Furthermore, Si significantly enhanced the expression of CS-responsive candidate genes including ICE1, CBF1/DREB1C, CBF2/DREB1B, CBF3/DREB1A, COR15A, COR47, and KIN1 in alfalfa. These findings together provide mechanistic insights into Si-involving CS tolerance in alfalfa. This eco-friendly SC management strategy using Si treatment can be useful to plant breeders and farmers for developing CS-resilient smart alfalfa production through breeding program.

One-Point and Multiline Calibration Fiber-Optic Laser-Ablation Spark-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy for Quantitative Analysis of Elements in Aluminum Alloys

Rapid and accurate analysis of element concentrations in aluminum alloys is crucial due to their widespread use in modern industry. This paper proposes a one-point and multiline calibration fiber-optic laser-ablation spark-induced breakdown spectroscopy (OP-MLC FO-LA-SIBS) for the quantitative analysis of elements in aluminum alloys. The experimental system utilizes a compact fiber laser as the laser-ablation source and spark discharge to enhance the atomic emission. A portable multichannel fiber spectrometer is used to quickly collect spectra in the nongated mode. The concentrations of four elements (Mg, Cr, Cu, and Mn) in four aluminum alloy samples were calculated using the simple and efficient OP-MLC method, which involves taking another sample with a similar matrix as the standard sample. The average relative errors (AREs) for Mg, Cr, Cu, and Mn were 6.38%, 28.09%, 21.92%, and 18.97%, respectively. When the certified concentrations are greater than 0.02 wt.%, the ARE is only 13.04%. The OP-MLC FO-LA-SIBS system is compact, features simple spectra processing, and offers effective measurement, providing a convenient method for rapid and efficient quantitative analysis of elements in aluminum alloys in industrial production.

Comparison of Evaporite-Related Source Rocks and Implications for Petroleum Exploration: A Case Study of the Dongying Depression, Bohai Bay Basin, Eastern China

The Dongying Depression (Bohai Bay Basin, eastern China) was widely filled with evaporite (anhydrite and halite) layers during the Paleogene period, especially the middle of the fourth member of the Shahejie Formation (Es4). Most evaporite layers are interbedded with mudstone strata. The strata of Es4 are divided into three sections, referred to as the upper layers, evaporite layers, and lower layers, respectively. The analysis of elemental concentrations, elemental ratios, and Pr/Ph suggests that the lower layers were deposited in an intermittent saline lake environment within a relatively dry climate. The evaporite layers were formed in a highly saline lake environment, whereas the upper layers were formed in a brackish-saline to fresh-water environment. Organic matter (OM) abundance indices, including total organic carbon (TOC), chloroform extracts, total hydrocarbon content (HC), hydrocarbon generation potential (S1 + S2), and OM type, show that the source rock potential for petroleum generation in the upper layers is best, that in the evaporite layers is fair, and in the lower layers it is poor. Carbon isotopes (δ13C) of hydrocarbons in the evaporite and lower layers were heavier than those in the upper layers. Thermal maturity parameters show that the thermal evolution process of OM in the upper layers was faster where evaporite were present compared with evaporite-free areas, while the thermal evolution of OM in the lower layers was slower in these regions. The high thermal conductivity of evaporites may have accelerated the thermal evolution of source rocks in upper layers and allowed hydrocarbon generation at a shallower burial depth. This resulted in the earlier appearance of the petroleum generation window compared to in evaporite-free areas. Meanwhile, the thermal evolution of OM in the lower layers was restrained, and consequently the hydrocarbon generation window was widened, which implies the potential for petroleum exploration in deep strata under the evaporite sequence. This is a common phenomenon in evaporite-bearing basins, according to previous and present studies.

The Zunyi manganese deposit, South China: A consequence of climatic-oceanic changes triggered by the eruption of Emeishan large Igneous Province?

South China hosts a large number of Middle Permian marine sedimentary Mn deposits (MSMDs) coeval to the eruption of the Emeishan Large Igneous Province (ELIP). The linkage between these MSMDs and ELIP eruption remains unclear. Here, we observed anomalously high Hg concentrations and Hg/TOC ratios, and a shift of Δ199Hg to near-zero at the base of the Middle Permian Zunyi MSMD. These results suggest ELIP eruption as a possible driving force for the deposition of the Zunyi MSMD. Principal component analysis (PCA) of trace element concentrations of the Zunyi MSMD samples revealed three clusters of trace elements. Cluster A elements (Cr, Zn, Mo, Sb, and Tl) are anomalously high at the basal of the Zunyi MSMD, confirming ELIP as a driver for the formation of this deposit. Cluster B elements (Ba, Rb, and Cu) are high in the entire deposit, supporting elevated oceanic productivity. A stepwise increase in Cluster C elements (Li, Ga, Sn, Zr, Nb, Hf, Ta, and W) concentrations in the Zunyi MSMD suggests enhanced terrestrial weathering. We infer that the ELIP eruption triggered an increased input of terrestrial nutrients to the ocean, causing increased oceanic productivity and rising dissolved O2 levels in the surface water of the middle Permian ocean in South China, favoring Mn deposition and MSMDs formation.

Air Quality Impacts on the Giant Panda Habitat in the Qinling Mountains: Chemical Characteristics and Sources of Elements in PM2.5

The wild giant panda habitat is inaccessible and far away from the main areas of human activity, so environmental pollutants entering the habitat are mainly the result of external migration and spread through the atmospheric advection and diffusion processes and particulate matter deposition. To research the variation, transmission route, chemical characteristics, and source of PM2.5 in the habitat of wild giant pandas, we set up a PM2.5 sampling point near the Shaanxi Foping National Nature Reserve (SFNNR), which is the area with the highest population density of wild giant pandas in the Qinling Mountains. The 12-month average concentration of PM2.5 was 11.3 ± 7.9 μg/m3 from July 2021 to June 2022, and the 12-month average concentration did not exceed the limit value set in the standard. In the results of our analysis of element concentrations, As and Pb were much lower than the limit standard. Si, S, P, and Cl accounted for 99.60% of nonmetallic elements, while the proportion of the six metallic elements, Na, Mg, Al, K, Ca, and Fe, was 96.27%. According to the analysis results of enrichment factor (EF) and pollutant emission sources, there were four sources for the total elements in PM2.5, which were mainly distributed in the areas around the reserve. These included dust, coal combustion, biomass burning, and traffic-related emissions, which contributed 55.10%, 24.78%, 11.91%, and 8.22% of the total element mass in PM2.5, respectively. Additionally, Pb, Cu, Zn, As, Sc, Co, Ga, Mg, and, especially, Se were severely affected by human activities (coal burning, biomass burning, and traffic-related emissions). In the villages and towns around the wild giant panda habitat, the majority of energy for cooking and heating comes from coal and biomass burning, and older vehicles with high emissions are used more frequently. Therefore, to better protect the health of and reduce the impact of environmental pollution on wild giant pandas, we put forward relevant recommendations, including upgrading the energy structure of towns and villages near the habitat to increase the proportion of clean energy, such as photovoltaic power generation, natural gas, etc.; decreasing the combustion of coal and biomass; encouraging the upgrading of agricultural diesel machines and older vehicles used in these areas; and setting limits on vehicle emissions in areas surrounding the habitat.
