Rough Modelling Methodology for Plant Projects

A Rough Modelling Methodology is presented, using the European Prestandard ENV40 003 1990-04-18 “CIM-Systems Architecture-Framework for Enterprise modelling” (“CIM-OSA Cube”) as a guiding framework. The phases of the modelling project, Requirements Definition, Design Specification and Implementation Description, are derived from it. The “learning from others” dimension of CIM-OSA is applied by looking for reference solutions from other plant projects. Instead of the preliminary CIM-OSA modelling methods, the current industry practice methods and tools are used as the basis of the development. Othermodelling methods, like QFD, SA/SD etc. are considered to be linked into Rough Modelling Methodology. This research is been done in the project “Rough Modelling”, which is included in the Finnish national technology programme “Developing the Implementation of Plant Project Deliveries”(PRODEAL). The participating companies and organisations of the “Rough Modelling” project are the following: Wärtsilä Diesel Power Plants, AGA Consulting, IVO Engineering International, Federation of Finnish Metal Engineering and Electro technical Industries (FIMET), Helsinki University of Technology Institute of Industrial Automation, and Technology Development Center of Finland (TEKES).

Principal economic decisions of operational production management in Czechoslovak enterprises of electrotechnical industry

The paper describes the changing methodology of production management in Czechoslovakia. Principles and structure of an operational production management system used in the electrotechnical industry is described with special emphasis on the decision making process.

Carbon-carbon composite materials

-- Carbon-carbon CM, thanks to their unique properties and in spite of their relatively high cost, are finding application in articles for new technology, where in constructional characteristics, chemical, and ecological cleanness, there are no other alternative materials. They are primarily used in chemical engineering, the automobile, tractor, aviation, electrotechnical industries, metallurgy, and nuclear energy. C-CCM will be more widely used in endoprostheses and stomatology.

Application of Advanced Data Processing Technology for Integrated Inspection in Electrotechnical Assembly

Abstract The paper deals with integrated test and quality assurance systems for monitoring 3rd control of advanced production lines in electrotechnical industry The focus of the paper is on the application of innovative data processing technologies based on neural networks which are used both for acoustic signal interpretation as well as for rage processing By describing examples of their application in the manufacturing of electric motors and in the assembly of Printed Circuit Boards (PCB) both the technological approach as well as the conclusions from the industrial application are discussed.

Polymers target broader areas of application in electrotechnology

Polymer compounds — plastics, rubber and elastomers — are essential to modern production processes. This is particularly true in the electrotechnical industry, where the electrical and forming properties of polymers have been utilized for many years in the manufacture of cables and advanced ancillary products. In recent years the development has expanded rapidly and now covers polymer compounds for use also outside this sector.

Strategic groups in international competition

By focusing on important dimensions for identifying strategic groups, companies can improve their understanding of the competitive environment. But which are the crucial strategic dimensions when it comes to classifying competitors, in light of the fact that uncertainty is inherent in any assessment of competitors' business strategies? This article presents an empirical study that seeks to throw fresh light on the concept of the strategic group. Four key dimensions are proposed for grouping competitors according to their business strategies. Thus, competitors could be classified according to the breadth of their market scope and the degree of adaptation to individual customers. Product quality and pricing can also be used as dimensions in identifying strategic groups. These dimensions apply primarily to analyses in the electrotechnical industry. The sample comprises 44 Swedish electrotechnical companies. Twenty-four of these compete on the Swedish market and 20 on the U.S. market. Mail questionnaires were used to collect cross-sectional quantitative data about the competitor perceptions of the company presidents. Analysis of the data reveals slight differences only between perceptions in Sweden and the U.S. Correlations among variables have also been calculated and underlying factors have been distinguished. These factors constitute the dimensions for classifying competitors. The resulting strategic dimensions are applied to a mapping of strategic groups of competitors on the Swedish and U.S. industrial robot markets.

Corrosion inhibitors based on various polyolefins

This article reports on the testing of a polybutene with a molecular weight of 268 that is obtained as a byproduct in the manufacture of the additive A-9250 at the Kremenchug refinery, a similar product with a molecular weight of 415 from the Kuibyshev refinery, a polymer distillate obtained by catalytic polymerization of low-molecular-weight olefins, and higher oligomers of ethylene obtained by high-temperature oligomerization of ethylene on triethylaluminium. With the increasing demand for Oktols (low-molecular-weight polybutenes) in the electrotechnical industry, the amount of polybutenes that can be diverted to inhibitor production has been curtailed. There is a need to find other USSR-produced polyolefins that will be suitable as raw materials for inhibitor production. The polybutene with a molecular weight of 415 is recommended for the production of alkenylsuccinic anhydride (ASA) oil-soluble corrosion inhibitors. It is suggested that the ASA and the urea alkenylsuccinimides (USI) inhibitors based on the ethylene oligomers and the atactic and destructurized atactic polypropylene can be used as corrosion inhibitors in petroleum-based film-forming compositions. An Organizational-Economic Experiment in the Sphere of Science and Technology

Organizational-economic experiments at various levels in the sphere of development of science and technology indicate the great potential for using this form of testing new managerial ideas. In particular, the new system of planning, financing, and economic stimulation of new technology, the introduction of which was begun in 1969 in the electrotechnical industry, created great economic motivation for organizations to raise their scientific and technical level and the economic effectiveness of their research and development. Like a number of branches of material production, this system envisages the formation of three economic incentive funds in scientific organizations: the material incentive fund, the fund for sociocultural measures and housing construction, and the organizational development fund. The guaranteed economic effect of the introduction of the results of R&D and the scientific and technical level of these results are the basic fund-forming indicators. The degree of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union and the USSR Council of Ministers "On Improving the Planning and the Intensification of the Effect of the Economic Mechanism on Increasing the Effectiveness of Production and Improving the Quality of Work" makes provision for the formation of the three indicated economic incentive funds in scientific research, project-planning and design, and technological organizations in all branches of industry. Consequently, the economic stimulation of scientific organizations is based on the principle that they realize part of the economic effect (profit) the creation of which they have promoted.

Increase of labor productivity in multipurpose hydraulic construction

1. An increase in social labor productivity is a most important condiincreasing the effectiveness of socialist construction. 2. The coverage of all categories of hydraulic builders by various forms of education in economics will promote the most rapid introduction of advanced economic methods of managing hydraulic construction. 3. It is necessary to improve radically the methods of compiling, the content, and the implementation of plans of organizational and technical measures, the end purpose of which should be an increase in the productivity of active labor and an economy of past manpower at hydraulic projects. It is necessary to enlist research and development and to examine them with the participation of all links of construction which have their own tasks in this plan. 4. It is desirable that the Ministry of Power of the USSR together with the Central Administration of the Scientific and Technical Society of the Power Engineering and Electrotechnical Industry announce a series of outlines on the development and implementation of measures for large-scale mechanization of labor-consuming processes which will markedly reduce manual labor, for utilization of secondary resources which will economize materials, etc. Preference must be given to these operations with their inclusion in the plan of new technology. 5. It is desirable that the Ministry of Power of the USSR together with the Central Administration of the Scientific and Technical Society of Power Engineering and the Power Industry outline the development and implementation of measures to be taken for large-scale mechanization of labor-consuming processes which will reduce manual labor markedly; for the use of secondary resources which will save stocked materials, etc. Preference must be given to these works when including new technology in the plan. 6. It is necessary to increase the volume of literature published on problems of labor productivity and present experience accumulated in this area in current-awareness bulletins.

Swiss Electrotechnical Industry during War-time

IN the February issue of Swiss Technics, a journal published by the Swiss Office for the Development of Trade (Zurich and Lausanne), which co-operates with the Swiss Association of Machinery Manufacturers, Zurich, there is an instructive account of a visit made to the Secheron Works at Geneva. These works have always been strictly limited to the construction of heavy electrical machinery and material. A few years ago, when the electrification of the chief Swiss railroads, to which the Secheron Works greatly contributed, drew to a close, new lines of manufacture were tuken up. Among these was the building of electric welding apparatus and the manufacture of the necessary electrodes. The Secheron alternating-current arc-welding apparatus has now almost everywhere replaced direct-current revolving units. For the welding of complicated parts ‘exotherme’ electrodes are almost universally employed; cut-out or stamped parts can be simply welded together by the melting of the electrode into the space left between them, thus forming a solid block as homogeneous as a foundry casting.
