3GPP W-CDMA systems: design and testing

Newly emerging wireless signal formats can present significant design challenges to the system design engineer. Wideband code division multiple access (W-CDMA) can present many engineering design and verification challenges, due to its physical layer complexity as well as complexities that can arise when integrating RF and baseband designs to achieve a working system. System design engineers typically have the task of interpreting standards specifications, first for partitioning subsystem requirements, then verifying that the end-to-end system design (typically including both baseband and RF designs) will meet specifications when they are finally integrated. This article considers a case study that illustrates the importance of simulating baseband and RF designs together to accomplish this task. Specifically, a conceptual system design that includes system models, a fixed-point finite impulse response filter, and transistor-level circuit design is simulated and verified together against measurements defined in the third-generation partnership project (3GPP) W-CDMA standards specifications. Tradeoffs between improving either the RF or baseband design to meet overall system specifications will be discussed. Finally, design verification using "connected solutions," or connectivity between, electronic design automation software and test equipment will be described, illustrating how verification testing can be started earlier to help reduce risk by identifying performance issues early in the design cycle, when they are potentially easier and costly to implement.

A Case Study: Application of Parametric Cost Analysis to Claims Related to Scope Changes

Abstract During proposal preparation, many organizations use parametric tools to develop cost estimates and compare alternative approaches. A less common application of parametric analysis involves identification of costs for alleged out-of-scope or unplanned work in support of damage claims and legal proceedings. This paper presents a case study of a parametric cost estimating system that was used in a legal filing to substantiate out-of-scope engineering costs related to the design of electronic test equipment. Due to a failure in project management methods, the firm had minimal data to substantiate cost claims related to alleged scope changes. As a result it developed a number of parametric estimation methods to support the claim. Unfortunately, these approaches developed dependent, correlated cost terms that increased the variance and uncertainty of the resulting estimate. Using Conjoint Analysis to Help Design Product Platforms

This article illustrates how one can combine different conjoint analysis studies, each containing a core of common attributes, to help design product platforms that serve as the foundation for multiple derivative products. The illustration is based on actual, but disguised, data from a small company that makes electronic test equipment.This article demonstrates that decisions that consider products individually are likely to be suboptimal and can be significantly different than those based on product platforms. Suboptimality can occur either when preferences for product features differ across markets or when a technology is more important to the overall company than it is to an individual product. Additionally, we show the importance of considering both fixed and variable costs when performing this type of analysis as sales, contribution, and profit‐maximizing products are quite different. Finally, sensitivity analyses show that these results are robust with respect to assumptions about price sensitivity, fixed costs, and timing of entry. © 1999 Elsevier Science Inc.

Optimized relay testing systems

With the appearance on the market of electronic test equipment that is controlled by software from personal computers, automation of classical test methods has been achieved and new methods have been developed. For engineers and technicians in charge of performing integrity and application tests, steady-state and dynamic tests can provide helpful information used in design, commissioning and preventive and corrective maintenance. These test methods result in savings of time and the cost involved in these tasks. Since 1990, the Spanish electric utility, Iberdrola, and the Electrical Department of the University of the Basque Country have been developing tools to: automate protective relay testing; analyze the location and characteristics of faults in the power network on the basis of oscillographic records; and simulate real or hypothetical fault conditions on a protective relay in order to monitor its behavior. Two automatic relay testing systems and experience of their use are introduced in this article. Particular testing protocols of different relays are incorporated and all useful features available to increase the automation grade are considered. Both systems minimize power system protection relay maintenance times and costs and improve the quality and reliability of relay management.

A Field Study of Connector Reliability

The objectives of this investigation were 1) to survey field support personnel on the reliability and use of connectors in electronic test and computer equipment; 2) to characterize the types of defects found on gold-plated edge card connector fingers from a large sample of printed wire assemblies (PWA's), obtained randomly from customer sites; and 3) to characterize the chemistry of the most prevalent defects found on the edge card connector fingers. The field support survey provided information on proper selection, use, and care of connectors used in electronic equipment. The microscopic examination of PWA edge card connector fingers indicated that the presence of a film covering the gold surface was the predominant defect found. Other defects observed included wear scratches, dust, pore corrosion, and a build up of debris at the metal-to-metal contact area. Defects such as edge corrosion and creep were observed, but on only very few PWA's. Chemical analysis of the film on the connector fingers found it to be primarily organic.

Algebra Aids Electronics

This investigation grew out of the need to design a piece of electronic test-equipment. The purpose of the equipment was to study the effect of varying capacity upon the behaviour of a number of electric circuits, and it consisted basically of an automatically-stepping switch which presented at its output terminals a controlled sequence of values of capacity. The nature of the test demanded that the set of capacity values should as nearly as possible cover a given range in a logarithmic scale, and to economise in components the equipment was to generate the set of values from a basic set of condensers, by creating all possible parallel-connected combinations. The problem was, how to choose the basic set? The analysis has a number of points of combinatorial interest, and illustrates fairly well the ad hoc approach of the industrial mathematician.

Ultrasonic spectroscopy of steel: Materials research and standards, 5, No. 1, 23 (1965)

An electronic test instrument has been developed for the study of ultrasonic‐attenuation spectra. The instrument utilizes the pulse‐echo test procedure and operates with a single piezoelectric transducer employed for both transmission and reception of ultrasonic test signals. Special electronic circuitry provides equalization of the frequency‐response curve of the piezoelectric transducer with the result that ultrasonic test frequencies covering a range of 3–12 Mcps can be transmitted and received simultaneously. The described ultrasonic spectroscope has been applied to examine the microstructure of steel specimens and it has been found that the ultrasonic‐attenuation spectrum is strongly influenced by the average grain size of the specimen. Working in the spectral range of 3–12 Mcps, discrimination between specimens having grain diameters varying from 2 to 8 (ASTM scale) has been accomplished.
