A Tricyclic Framework with Integrated B←N and Cyano Dual Functionalization for Superior n-Type Organic Electronics.

n-Type conjugated polymers featuring low-lying lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) energy levels are essential for achieving high-performance n-type organic thin-film transistors (OTFTs) and organic thermoelectrics (OTEs). However, the synthesis of acceptors with strong electron-withdrawing characteristics presents a significant challenge. Herein, a peripheral functionalization strategy is employed on the tricyclic framework anthracene by introducing dual N,O-bidentate BF2/B(CN)2 groups to enhance its electron-withdrawing capability. This approach successfully navigates synthetic challenges, leading to the development of two novel acceptor building blocks: DBNF and DBNCN. Compared to the counterparts with a single N,O-bidentate BF2/B(CN)2 moiety, DBNF and DBNCN exhibit an extended π-backbone, enhanced molecular packing, and improved electron-withdrawing properties. Utilizing these innovative acceptor monomers, copolymers, PDBNF and PDBNCN, are synthesized, which exhibit considerably suppressed LUMO ≈-4.0 eV. The deep LUMO of PDBNF together with its favourable bimodal packing orientation leads to remarkable electron mobility of 3.04 cm2 V-1 s-1 with improved stability in OTFTs. Importantly, efficient n-doping in OTEs is achieved with PDBNCN, exhibiting exceptional conductivity of 95.5 S cm-1 and a maximum power factor of 147.8 μW m-1 K-2-among the highest reported for solution-processed n-type polymers. This work underscores the effectiveness of introducing dual B←N and cyano functionalities in attaining high-performance n-type plastic electronics.

Tetrazole and Oxadiazole Derivatives as Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence Emitters.

Organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) are promising lighting solutions for sustainability and energy efficiency. Incorporating thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) molecules enables OLEDs to achieve internal quantum efficiency (IQE), in principle, up to 100 %; therefore, new classes of promising TADF emitters and modifications of existing ones are sought after. This study explores the TADF emission properties of six designed TADF emitters, examining their photophysical responses using experimental and theoretical methods. The design strategy involves creating six distinct types of a donor-acceptor (D-A) system, where tert-butylcarbazoles are used as donors, while the acceptor component incorporates three different functional groups: nitrile, tetrazole and oxadiazole, with varying electron-withdrawing character. Additionally, the donor-acceptor distance is adjusted using a phenylene spacer, and its influence on TADF functionality is examined. The clear dependency of an additional spacer, inhibiting TADF, could be revealed. Emitters with a direct donor-acceptor connection are demonstrated to exhibit TADF moderate emissive behavior. The analysis emphasizes the impact of charge transfer, singlet-triplet energy gaps (ΔEST), and other microscopic parameters on photophysical rates, permitting TADF. Among the emitters, TCz-CN shows optimal performance as a blue-green emitter with an 88 % photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) and fast rate of reversible intersystem crossing of 2×106 s-1 and 1×107 s-1, obtained from time-resolved photoluminescence (TRPL) experiment in PMMA matrix and quantum mechanical calculations, respectively. This comprehensive exploration identifies molecular bases of superior TADF emitters and provides insights for future designs, advancing the optimization of TADF properties in OLEDs.

Thermodynamic Modulation of Dihydrogen Activation Through Rational Ligand Design in GeII-Ni0 Complexes.

A family of chelating aryl-functionalized germylene ligands has been developed and employed in the synthesis of their corresponding 16-electron Ni0 complexes (PhiPDippGeAr·Ni·IPr; PhiPDipp = {[Ph2PCH2Si(iPr)2](Dipp)N}-; IPr = [{(H)CN(Dipp)}2C:]; Dipp = 2,6-iPr2C6H3). These complexes demonstrate the ability to cooperatively and reversibly activate dihydrogen at the germylene-nickel interface under mild conditions (1.5 atm H2, 298 K). We show that the thermodynamics of the dihydrogen activation process can be modulated by tuning the electronic nature of the germylene ligands, with an increase in the electron-withdrawing character displaying more exergonic ΔG298 values, as ascertained through NMR spectroscopic Van't Hoff analyses for all systems. This is also shown to correlate with experimental 31P NMR and UV/vis absorption data as well as with computationally derived parameters such as Ge-Ni bond order and Ni/Ge NPA charge, giving a thorough understanding of the modulating effect of ligand design on this reversible, cooperative bond activation reaction. Finally, the utility of this modulation was demonstrated in the catalytic dehydrocoupling of phenylsilane, whereby systems that disfavor dihydrogen activation are more efficient catalysts, aligning with H2-elimination being the rate-limiting step. A density functional theory analysis supports cooperative activation of the Si-H moiety in PhSiH3.

Strengthening an Intramolecular Non-Classical Hydrogen Bond to Get in Shape for Binding.

In this research article, we report on the strengthening of a non-classical hydrogen bond (C-H⋅⋅⋅O) by introducing electron withdrawing groups at the carbon atom. The approach is demonstrated on the example of derivatives of the physiological E-selectin ligand sialyl Lewisx (1, sLex). Its affinity is mainly due to a beneficial entropy term, which is predominantly caused by the pre-organization of sLex in its binding conformation. We have shown, that among the elements responsible for the pre-organization, the stabilization by a non-classical hydrogen bond between the H-C5 of l-fucose and the ring oxygen O5 of the neighboring d-galactose moiety is essential and yields 7.4 kJ mol-1. This effect could be further strengthened by replacing l-fucose by 6,6,6-trifluoro-l-fucose leading to an improved non-classical H-bond of 14.9 kJ mol-1, i.e., an improved pre-organization in the bioactive conformation. For a series of glycomimetics of sLex (1), this outcome could be confirmed by high field NMR-shifts of the H-C5Fuc, by X-ray diffraction analysis of glycomimetics co-crystallized with E-selectin as well as by isothermal titration calorimetry. Furthermore, the electron-withdrawing character of the CF3-group beneficially influences the pharmacokinetic properties of sLex mimetics. Thus, acid-stability, a prerequisite for gastrointestinal stability, could be substantially improved.

Electrostatic Surface Potentials and Chalcogen-Bonding Motifs of Substituted 2,1,3-Benzoselenadiazoles Probed via 77Se Solid-State NMR Spectroscopy.

Chalcogen bonds (ChB) are moderately strong, directional, and specific non-covalent interactions that have garnered substantial interest over the last decades. Specifically, the presence of two σ-holes offers great potential for crystal engineering, catalysis, biochemistry, and molecular sensing. However, ChB applications are currently hampered by a lack of methods to characterize and control chalcogen bonds. Here, we report on the influence of various substituents (halogens, cyano, and methyl groups) on the observed self-complementary ChB networks of 2,1,3-benzoselenadiazoles. From molecular electrostatic potential calculations, we show that the electrostatic surface potentials (ESP) of the σ-holes on selenium are largely influenced by the electron-withdrawing character of these substituents. Structural analyses via X-ray diffraction reveal a variety of ChB geometries and binding modes that are rationalized via the computed ESP maps, although the structure of 5,6-dimethyl-2,1,3-benzoselenadiazole also demonstrates the influence of steric interactions. 77Se solid-state magic-angle spinning NMR spectroscopy, in particular the analysis of the selenium chemical shift tensors, is found to be an effective probe able to characterize both structural and electrostatic features of these self-complementary ChB systems. We find a positive correlation between the value of the ESP maxima at the σ-holes and the experimentally measured 77Se isotropic chemical shift, while the skew of the chemical shift tensor is established as a metric which is reflective of the ChB binding motif.

Lithium-Ion Dynamic and Storage of Atomically Precise Halogenated Nanographene Assemblies via Bottom-Up Chemical Synthesis.

Graphene has received much scientific attention as an electrode material for lithium-ion batteries because of its extraordinary physical and electrical properties. However, the lack of structural control and restacking issues have hindered its application as carbon-based anode materials for next generation lithium-ion batteries. To improve its performance, several modification approaches such as edge-functionalization and electron-donating/withdrawing substitution have been considered as promising strategies. In addition, group 7A elements have been recognized as critical elements due to their electronegativity and electron-withdrawing character, which are able to further improve the electronic and structural properties of materials. Herein, we elucidated the chemistry of nanographenes with edge-substituted group 7A elements as lithium-ion battery anodes. The halogenated nanographenes were synthesized via bottom-up organic synthesis to ensure the structural control. Our study reveals that the presence of halogens on the edge of nanographenes not only tunes the structural and electronic properties but also impacts the material stability, reactivity, and Li+ storage capability. Further systematic spectroscopic studies indicate that the charge polarization caused by halogen atoms could regulate the Li+ transport, charge transfer energy, and charge storage behavior in nanographenes. Overall, this study provides a new molecular design for nanographene anodes aiming for next-generation lithium-ion batteries.

Chlorination Design for Highly Stable Electrolyte toward High Mass Loading and Long Cycle Life Sodium-Based Dual-Ion Battery.

Sodium-based dual ion batteries (SDIBs) have garnered significant attention as novel energy storage devices offering the advantages of high-voltage and low-cost. Nonetheless, conventional electrolytes exhibit low resistance to oxidation and poor compatibility with electrode materials, resulting in rapid battery failure. In this study, for the first time, a chlorination design of electrolytes for SDIB, is proposed. Using ethyl methyl carbonate (EMC) as a representative, chlorine (Cl)-substituted EMC not only demonstrates increased oxidative stability ascribed to the electron-withdrawing characteristics of chlorine atom, electrolyte compatibility with both the cathode and anode is also greatly improved by forming Cl-containing interface layers. Consequently, a discharge capacity of 104.6 mAh g-1 within a voltage range of 3.0-5.0V is achieved for Na||graphite SDIB that employs a high graphite cathode mass loading of 5.0mg cm-2, along with almost no capacity decay after 900 cycles. Notably, the Na||graphite SDIB can be revived for an additional 900 cycles through the replacement of a fresh Na anode. As the mass loading of graphite cathode increased to 10mg cm-2, Na||graphite SDIB is still capable of sustaining over 700 times with ≈100% capacity retention. These results mark the best outcome among reported SDIBs. This study corroborates the effectiveness of chlorination design in developing high-voltage electrolytes and attaining enduring cycle stability of Na-based energy storage devices.

Structural Analysis of 3,5-Bistrifluoromethylhydrocinnamic Acid

The crystal structure of 3,5-bistrifluoromethylhydrocinnamic acid [systematic name: 3-[3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl]propanoic acid], C11H8F6O2, has been determined and described. The structure was subject to the Hirshfeld surface-analysis and CE-B3LYP interaction-energies calculations. The title compound crystallises in the monoclinic P21/c space group with one molecule in the asymmetric unit. The propanoic acid side chain of the studied molecule has a bent conformation. The key supramolecular motif in the crystal structure is a centrosymmetric O–H∙∙∙O hydrogen-bonded dimer (R22(8) in the graph set notation). According to CE-B3LYP, the molecules involved in this motif exhibit the strongest pairwise interaction total energy (Etot = −67.9 kJ/mol). On the other hand, there are seven other interacting molecular pairs with significant Etot values in the range of −17 to −28 kJ/mol. In these, the energy is dominated by the dispersive contribution. A survey of the Cambridge Structural Database revealed that in other 3-phenylpropanoic acid structures, the middle dihedral angle of the propanoic acid side chain is always in the trans conformation. This contrasts the current structure where this dihedral angle is in the gauche conformation. According to the Density Functional Theory calculations in the gas phase (at the B3LYP/aug-cc-pvDZ level), the presence of the two CF3 groups (strong electron-withdrawing character) increases the population of the gauche conformers by a substituent electronic effect, and this may be a minor factor contributing to the appearance of this conformation observed in the solid state.

Insights into ThB40: Stability, Electronic Structure, and Interaction.

The interaction between nonmetal and metal atoms has attracted great interest in the development of organometallic compounds and their promising applications. In this study, we explored the interaction between boron and thorium atoms, based on the stable B40Th coordination compound, by employing density functional theory calculations. We elucidated the stability and geometries of the B40Th coordination compound and revealed the electron transfer from the metal atom Th to B40, which is evidenced by the natural bond orbital calculations. This electron transfer is attributed to the electron-withdrawing character of the boron atom and results in clear electrostatic interaction. Additionally, bond critical analysis and bond order calculations show obvious covalent characters between the metal and nonmetal atoms. The IR spectrum was simulated to give detailed information to identify this targeted compound in future experiments. This study is expected to enhance the understanding of metal-nonmetal interactions and provides useful information for constructing new organometallic compounds based on actinium metal atoms.

Trifluoroethylation and Pentafluoropropylation of C(sp3)-H Bonds.

Polyfluorinated substituents often enhance effectiveness, improve the stability within metabolic processes, and boost the lipophilicity of biologically active compounds. However, methods for their introduction into aliphatic carbon chains remain very limited. A potentially general route to integrate the fluorinated scaffolds into organic molecules involves insertion of fluorine-containing carbenes into C(sp3)-H bonds. The electron-withdrawing characteristics of perfluoroalkyl groups enhances the reactivity of these carbenes which should enable the functionalization of unactivated C(sp3)-H bonds. Curiously, it appears that use of perfluoroalkyl-containing carbenes in alkane C-H functionalization is exceedingly rare. This concept describes photolysis, enzymatic catalysis, and transition metal catalysis as three primary approaches to C(sp3)-H functionalization by trifluoromethylcarbene and its homologues.

Monitoring structure and coordination chemistry of Co4O4-based oxygen evolution catalysts by nitrogen-14/-15 and cobalt-59 NMR spectroscopy.

The structural features of cobalt-based oxygen evolution catalysts are elucidated by combining high-field MAS NMR spectroscopy and DFT calculations. The superior photocatalytic activity of the heterogeneous system over its homogeneous counterpart is rationalised by the structural features. The higher activity is caused by a more favourable electron-withdrawing character of the framework.

Electronically and geometrically complementary perylenediimides for kinetically controlled supramolecular copolymers.

The synthesis of 3,4,9,10-benzo[d,e]isoquinolino[1,8-g,h]quinoline-tetracarboxylic diimide (BQQDI) 1 endowed with peripheral trialkoxybenzamide fragments is reported and its self-assembling features investigated. The peripheral benzamide moieties generate metastable monomeric species that afford a kinetically controlled supramolecular polymerization. The electron-withdrawing character of 1 in comparison with previously reported PDIs 2, together with the similar geometry, makes this dye an optimal candidate to perform seeded supramolecular copolymerization yielding four different supramolecular block copolymers. Whilst heteropolymers poly-1-co-2a, poly-2a-co-1 and poly-1-co-2b present an H-type arrangement of the monomeric units, heteropolymer poly-2b-co-1, prepared by seeding the chiral, metastable monomers of 2b with achiral seeds of 1, produces chiral, J-type aggregates. Interestingly, the monosignated CD signal of pristine poly-2b changes to a bisignated CD signal most probably due to the formation of columnar domains around the seeds of 1 which implies the blocky nature of the supramolecular copolymers formed.

Photophysical properties of 3-arylthioimidazo[1,2-a]pyridine derivatives: The role of peripheral electron-donating and electron-withdrawing groups in the advance of organic materials engineering

3-Arylthioimidazo[1,2-a]pyridine derivatives may present potential use in fields such as optoelectronics, organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), bioimaging, and may be employed as bioprobes in DNA and RNA. However, before these materials can be used for such applications, it is necessary to assess their photophysical properties. Here, we investigated the photophysical properties of five novel 3-arylthioimidazo[1,2-a]pyridine derivatives with different peripheral electron-withdrawing and electron-donating groups. The use of spectroscopic techniques, including UV–vis absorption, fluorescence, time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy, combined with quantum chemical calculations, allowed us to gain a comprehensive understanding of the compounds' photophysical properties. The results revealed that the 3-arylthioimidazo[1,2-a]pyridine derivatives possess remarkable emissive properties, with a 4.5-fold increase when substituting the trifluoromethyl group for a methoxy group. Furthermore, it has been observed that the compounds containing peripheral groups with halogen atoms exhibit fluorescence quenching. The electron-withdrawing character of the imidazo[1,2-a]pyridine and the position of the lateral substituent hindered the impact of electron-withdrawing groups, while electron-donating groups enhanced the photophysical properties, resulting in increased Stokes shift, larger permanent dipole moment difference, and charge displacement. In conclusion, this study provides key insights into the photophysics of 3-arylthioimidazo[1,2-a]pyridine derivatives and the role of peripheral electron-donating and electron-withdrawing groups. These findings hold great potential for the advancement of optical materials and set foundation for future technological applications.

3-Trifluoromethyl Pyrrole Synthesis Based on β-CF3-1,3-Enynamides.

A new metal-free method for the rapid, productive, and scalable preparation of 3-trifluoromethyl pyrroles has been developed. It is based on the electrophilic nature of the double bond of β-CF3-1,3-enynamides due to the electron-withdrawing characteristics of the trifluoromethyl groups and the strong nucleophilic nature of alkyl primary amines. Evidence for the highly regioselective 1,4-hydroamination was observed after the isolation and characterization of the allenamide intermediate.

Five Novel Silver-Based Coordination Polymers as Photoluminescent Sensing Platforms for the Detection of Nitrobenzene.

Nitrobenzene (NB) is a highly toxic chemical and a cause for concern to human health and the environment. Hence, it is worthwhile to design new efficient and robust sensing platform for NB. In this study, we present three newly synthesized luminescent silver cluster-based coordination polymers, {[Ag10(StBu)6(CF3COO)4(hpbt)] (DMAc)2(CH3CN)2}n (hpbt = N,N,N',N'N",N"-hexa(pyridine-4-yl)benzene-1,3,5-triamine), [Ag12(StBu)6(CF3COO)6(bpva)3]n (bpva = 9,10-Bis(2-(pyridin-4-yl)vinyl)anthracene), and {[Ag12(StBu)6(CF3COO)6(bpb)(DMAc)2(H2O)2] (DMAc)2}n (bpb = 1,4-Bis(4-pyridyl)benzene) composed of Ag10, Ag12 and Ag12 cluster cores, respectively, connected by multidentate pyridine linkers. Besides, two new luminescent polymorphic silver(I)-based coordination polymers, [Ag(CF3COO)(dpa)]n (dpa = 9,10-di(4-pyridyl)anthracene) referred to as Agdpa (H) and Agdpa (R), where H and R denote the hexagon-like and rod-like crystal shapes, respectively, have been prepared. The coordination polymers exhibit highly sensitive luminescence quenching effect to NB, attributed to the π-π stacking interactions between the polymers and NB as well as the electron-withdrawing character of NB.

Exploring the Optoelectronic Properties of D-A and A-D-A 2,2'-bi[3,2-b]thienothiophene Derivatives.

The synthesis of some novel donor-acceptor and acceptor-donor-acceptor systems containing a 2,2'-bi[3,2-b]thienothiophene donor block and various electron-accepting units is described alongside their photophysical properties studied using electrochemistry, optical spectroscopy and theoretical calculations. The obtained results show that the energy levels can be modulated by changing the strength of the acceptor unit. Among the three investigated end-groups, 1,1-dicyanomethylene-3-indanone exhibited the largest bathochromic shift and the lowest band gap suggesting the strongest electron-withdrawing character. Moreover, the emissive properties of the investigated systems vary greatly with the nature of the terminal group and are generally lower compared to their precursor aldehyde derivatives.

Novel Polycyclic Fused Amide Derivatives: Properties and Applications for Sky-blue Electroluminescent Devices.

Aromatic imide derivatives play a critical role in boosting the electroluminescent (EL) performance of organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). However, the majority of aromatic imide-based materials are limited to long wavelength emission OLEDs rather than blue emissions due to their strong electron-withdrawing characteristics. Herein, two novel polycyclic fused amide units were reported as electron acceptor to be combined with either a tetramethylcarbazole or acridine donor via a phenyl linker to generate four conventional fluorescence blue emitters of BBI-4MeCz, BBI-DMAC, BSQ-4MeCz and BSQ-DMAC for the first time. BSQ-4MeCz and BSQ-DMAC based on a BSQ unit exhibited higher thermal stability and photoluminescence quantum yields than BBI-4MeCz and BBI-DMAC based on a BBI unit due to their more planar acceptor structure. The intermolecular interactions that exist in the BSQ series materials effectively inhibit the molecular rotation and configuration relaxation, and thus allow for blue-shifted emissions. Blue OLED devices were constructed with the developed materials as emitters, and the effects of both the structure of the polycyclic fused amide acceptor and the electron donor on the EL performance were clarified. Consequently, a sky-blue OLED device based on BSQ-DMAC was created, with a high maximum external quantum efficiency of 4.94% and a maximum luminance of 7761 cd m−2.

(Invited, Digital Presentation) Tuning the Electrodeposition of Actinides in Molten Alkali Halide Salts

Molten salts have found use as solvents in numerous applications including nuclear reactors, batteries, and the extraction and purification of various metals. Unfortunately, understanding of the chemistry of molten salt solutions is limited. In this presentation we explore the use of molten salts as a testbed for understanding both outer and inner coordination sphere effects on dissolved metal ions. The electron transfer reactions available to lanthanides (Eu3+, Sm3+, and Yb3+) and actinides (U3+, U4+, and Th4+) were explored in a series of alkali and alkaline earth halide salts. We present electrochemical data that demonstrate significant shifts in the reduction potentials of these metal ions as a function of the anion and cation identities of the molten salt solvent. We hypothesize that effects on the reduction potential of these metals come from two sources: (1) the primary coordination sphere and (2) the secondary coordination sphere. The influence from the primary coordination sphere is dominated by the degree of covalency in the coordination bonds between the Lnn+ and Ann+ cations and the molten salt anions. The influence of the secondary coordination sphere is dominated by the electron-withdrawing character of the salt cations. EXAFS data and computational results that support these hypotheses are presented. Further, we provide insight into electrodeposition of the An0 metals under these conditions and highlight temperature and molten salt effects that influence these electrodepositions. Specifically, we propose that increased mobility of solid-state atoms at high temperature (> 800°C) influence the properties of electrodeposited metals.

Polymer Modification of Surface Electronic Properties of Electrocatalysts.

Finding alternative ways to tailor the electronic properties of a catalyst to actively and selectively drive reactions of interest has been a growing research topic in the field of electrochemistry. In this Letter, we investigate the tuning of the surface electronic properties of electrocatalysts via polymer modification. We show that when a nickel oxide water oxidation catalyst is coated with polytetrafluoroethylene, stable Ni–CFx bonds are introduced at the nickel oxide/polymer interface, resulting in shifting of the reaction selectivity away from the oxygen evolution reaction and toward hydrogen peroxide formation. It is shown that the electron-withdrawing character of the surface fluorocarbon molecule leaves a slight positive charge on the water oxidation intermediates at the adjacent active nickel sites, making their bonds weaker. The concept of modifying the surface electronic properties of an electrocatalyst via stable polymer modification offers an additional route to tune multipathway reactions in polymer/electrocatalyst environments, like with ionomer-modified catalysts or with membrane electrode assemblies.
