Different Fokker–Planck approaches to simulate electron transport in plasmas

An evaluation of different approximations of the Rosenbluth potentials is performed. A comparison is made between the Legendre expansion used in the FPI code with spherical Rosenbluth potentials, and an improved version (FPI+) with semi-anisotropic Rosenbluth potentials, and the new ( v, μ) Fokker–Planck code “FPTrans” with fully anisotropic Rosenbluth potentials, for the problem of the relaxation of a bi-Maxwellian ( T ⊥≠ T ∥) electron distribution function, which confirms the validity of the semi-anisotropic approximation, but not of the isotropic one. The improved code FPI+ was also used to compute new propagators for nonlocal electron heat transport.

Nonlocal Electron Transport in a Plasma

We have developed a nonlocal linear theory of electron transport in plasmas with arbitrary electron collisionality. Closure relations for the fluid equations are derived from a solution to the electron Fokker-Planck equation where electron collisions are considered in the limit of large ion charge. We have found nonlocal expressions for electron transport coefficients: the electric conductivity, thermoelectric coefficient, thermal conductivity, electron viscosity, friction, and new transport coefficients related to the ion flow.

Simulation of electron transport in plasmas and solids

A cascade model for 1–10 5 eV electron transport in plasmas and solids is proposed. The model is based on the Monte Carlo technique and quantum mechanical description of electron-ion elastic scattering, ionization of ion shells with electron binding energy less than 100 eV, plasmon and electron-hole generation and classical description of inner shell ionization. The main advantage of this model is the detailed description of secondary electron generation without any semiempirical cross sections. The calculated electron backscattering coefficients from Al and Ti are in good agreement with experiments.

Respiratory electron transport in plasma and thylakoid membrane preparations from the cyanobacterium Anacystis nidulans

Plasma and thylakoid membranes were separated and purified from cell-free extracts of Anacystis nidulans by discontinuous sucrose density gradient centrifugation. Plasma membranes contained less than 0.05% (w/w) chlorophyll per protein. Both plasma and thylakoid membranes oxidized horse heart ferrocytochrome c (10 ± 4 and 3 ± 1 nmol mm per mg protein, respectively), with strong inhibition by low concentrations of cyanide, sulfide, azide, carbon monoxide, and salicyl aldoxime. The activity was stimulated 125% by 3.5% Tween 80 and totally suppressed by 100 mM NaCl. Oxidized cytochrome c was reduced by both types of membranes in the presence of NAD(P)H. The results indicate the occurrence of a respiratory chain including cytochrome- c oxidase in both plasma and thylakoid membranes of A. nidulans.

A Relationship Between Interatomic Bonding and Electron Transport in Plasma–Deposited, Amorphous Metal Alloys

ABSTRACTAmorphous metal alloy films have been produced using a new technique. Nominally NiP alloys are made by dissociating mixtures of nickel carbonyl and phosphine using a radio-frequency discharge in either an argon or a hydrogen carrier gas. This process incorporates significant amounts of carbon and oxygen impurities into the film. A previously unreported relationship between the interatomic bonding involving these impurities and the electronic transport properties of the films is discussed in this paper. The bonding studies were carried out principally using Auger lineshape analysis. Transport properties measured included 4-terminal resistivities, Hall mobilities and carrier concentrations, and Seebeck coefficients. Covalent bonding of Ni with C or P with O is strongly correlated with high resistivity, mainly through a decrease in carrier density.
