Image inpainting for ECEI based on DeepFillv2 model

In recent years, electron cyclotron emission imaging (ECEI) diagnostics have played an increasingly important role in magnetic confinement fusion research. However, imaging diagnostics face a significant challenge characterized by the degradation of image quality due to the presence of abnormal pixels. To address this issue, a novel image inpainting method specifically for ECEI has been developed based on DeepFillv2 model. Comparing four different types of methods (Free-Form Image Inpainting with Gated Convolution (DeepFillv2), Mean Fill (MF) , Navier-Stokes Equation (NS), and Fast Forward Marching (FFM)), DeepFillv2 model is selected for its superior performance. The performance is evaluated by calculating the mean square error (MSE), peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) and structural similarity index (SSIM). For J-TEXT ECEI image inpainting model, the results show that even the ratio of randomly distributed abnormal channel to total channels reaches 50 %, the SSIM between the restored image and the original image is more than 90 % and the PSNR is more than 30 dB, indicating the excellent performance. The application on J-TEXT experiment analysis also shows the model can improve the image quality and provide more useful information.

A synthetic diagnostics platform for microwave imaging diagnostics in tokamaks

Interpreting experimental diagnostics data in tokamaks, while considering non-ideal effects, is challenging due to the complexity of plasmas. To address this challenge, a general synthetic diagnostics (GSD) platform has been established that facilitates microwave imaging reflectometry and electron cyclotron emission imaging. This platform utilizes plasma profiles as input and incorporates the finite-difference time domain, ray tracing and the radiative transfer equation to calculate the propagation of plasma spontaneous radiation and the external electromagnetic field in plasmas. Benchmark tests for classical cases have been conducted to verify the accuracy of every core module in the GSD platform. Finally, 2D imaging of a typical electron temperature distribution is reproduced by this platform and the results are consistent with the given real experimental data. This platform also has the potential to be extended to 3D electromagnetic field simulations and other microwave diagnostics such as cross-polarization scattering.

Experimental observation of micro-tearing modes in the tokamak pedestal

A micro-tearing mode has been observed in electron temperature fluctuations and magnetic fluctuations with the frequency range of 80–120 kHz in the pedestal of the Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak (EAST) using Electron Cyclotron Emission Imaging (ECEI) and Mirnov magnetic coil measurement. It appears in the type-I ELMs period after the L-H transition. The measured poloidal phase velocity of the electron temperature fluctuations is ∼40 km/s (f = 80–120 kHz) in the electron diamagnetic direction in the laboratory frame with the poloidal wave number around kΘ ∼0.15 /cm. The two-dimensional structure of MTMs is directly observed using two-dimensional Electron cyclotron emission imaging. The experiment confirmed that the electron temperature (ECEI) and radial electric field (Backward Doppler reflectometer) during MTM meet the pressure balance equation. Until now, the theory and simulation results showed that transport is in heat flux, small particle flux, while the experimental results of this paper indicate that the particle flux is small.

The co-located arrangement of ECEI and MIR microwave imaging diagnostics on EAST tokamak

The co-located configuration of Passive Electron Cyclotron Emission Imaging (ECEI) and active Microwave Imaging Reflectometry (MIR) diagnostics systems has been successfully implemented on the EAST fusion reactor. These advanced 2D microwave diagnostic tools offer 10–20 mm poloidal spatial resolution through large aperture quasi optics. This arrangement not only optimizes the utilization of limited observation windows but also facilitates concurrent measurements of plasma density and electron temperature at specific toroidal positions. This co-located setup holds great promise for enhancing research into electron heat transport and other pivotal plasma phenomena.

Understanding the negative triangularity ELM trigger and ELM free state on DIII-D with ECE-imaging

The Electron Cyclotron Emission Imaging (ECEI) diagnostic was used to observe a finite-n interchange mode structure in the edge of negative triangularity shaped plasmas on DIII-D. At a small negative triangularity (δu = −0.2), the plasma is in the H-mode with ELMs that are triggered by a low-n interchange mode. At a larger negative triangularity (δu = −0.4) and low NBI power (2 MW), a dithering oscillation is observed that is triggered by a low-n interchange mode, whereas at higher NBI power (>2 MW), the edge reverts to L-mode and the low-n interchange mode is present continuously. In all cases, the edge pressure gradient is clamped when the interchange mode is present. It is concluded that the low-n interchange mode prevents the plasma from transitioning to H-mode at a large negative triangularity. This agrees with linear BOUT++ simulations which suggest that the interchange-type MHD can be a resistive ballooning mode whereby resistivity can significantly increase the finite-n ballooning mode growth rate. The absence of H-mode at large negative triangularity can, thus, be explained by the excitation of low-n pressure driven resistive ballooning modes in the plasma edge.

Investigation of MHD instabilities and related dynamic interactions during the major disruption in the HL-2A tokamak

Avoiding the major disruption is of paramount importance in future reactor-level devices, for which understanding the disruption mechanism is essential. In this work, MHD instabilities and related dynamic interactions during the major disruption have been investigated in the ohmically heated plasmas in the HL-2A tokamak. It is reported that the interaction between a kind of edge-oscillating-mode (EOM) perturbation and a rotating m/n = 2/1 tearing mode (TM) inside the plasma plays an important role in inducing the mode locking and the subsequent disruption. The EOM perturbation is oscillating in the laboratory frame, which is proposed to be originally generated by the penetrated error field at the plasma edge and is modulated by the rotating 2/1 TM mode. Before mode locking, the 2D electron cyclotron emission imaging shows that the momentary coupling of the EOM and the 2/1 mode can be decoupled each other and the mode structure does not alter significantly. After the mode locking, the EOM and the 2/1 mode expand and couple each other and induce the heat transfer from the core to the edge. The influence of the TM instability and the EOM perturbation on surrounding plasmas prior to the mode locking has also been presented. The results deepen our understanding of the disruption dynamics related to the external field perturbations, especially in the presence of TMs inside the plasma.

MHD instability dynamics and turbulence enhancement towards the plasma disruption at the HL-2A tokamak

The evolutions of MHD instability behaviors and enhancement of both electrostatic and electromagnetic turbulence towards the plasma disruption have been clearly observed in the HL-2A plasmas. Two types of plasma disruptive discharges have been investigated for similar equilibrium parameters: one with a distinct stage of a small central temperature collapse (sim 5–10%) around 1 millisecond before the thermal quench (TQ), while the other without. For both types, the TQ phase is preceded by a rotating 2/1 tearing mode, and it is the development of the cold bubble from the inner region of the 2/1 island O-point along with its inward convection that causes the massive energy loss. In addition, the micro-scale turbulence, including magnetic fluctuations and density fluctuations, increases before the small collapse, and more significantly towards the TQ. Also, temperature fluctuations measured by electron cyclotron emission imaging enhances dramatically at the reconnection site and expand into the island when approaching the small collapse and TQ, and the expansion is more significant close to the TQ. The observed turbulence enhancement near the X-point cannot be fully interpreted by the linear stability analysis by GENE. Evidences suggest that nonlinear effects, such as the reduction of local E_rtimes B shear and turbulence spreading, may play an important role in governing turbulence enhancement and expansion. These results imply that the turbulence and its interaction with the island facilitate the stochasticity of the magnetic flux and formation of the cold bubble, and hence, the plasma disruption.

Optical design and synthetic analysis of the electron cyclotron emission imaging diagnostic of HL-2M tokamak

The electron cyclotron emission imaging (ECEI) diagnostic is a powerful tool to study the MHD and turbulent transport in magnetically confined fusion plasmas. In this work, the optical system including the local oscillator (LO) coupling and radio frequency (RF) receiving optics, has been designed and analyzed for the HL-2M ECEI diagnostic. The LO optics can illuminate the antenna array and drive the mixer diode to work efficiently, with more than 36% of the beam intensity for the channels which probe the plasma edge relative to those of channels which probe the plasma core. The RF optics aims at guiding the plasma emission signal to the antenna array. To meet different physical requirements, three types of field of view have been achieved for the plasma imaging, with zoom factors of around 1, 1.5 and 2, respectively. The focal surfaces are almost flat, with a maximum off-mapping (defined as the radial distance between the beam waists of the lower-/uppermost antennas and electron cyclotron emission layer) less than 2.5 cm, which can match the electron cyclotron emission layer quite well and suppress the image distortion in the plasma edge region. The impact of possible vibrations and installation error on the focal plane has been evaluated. In addition, the predefined MHD and turbulence perturbations are well reproduced by combining the optical simulation results and synthetic ECEI modeling, which further verifies the good performance of the RF optics.

System-on-chip approach microwave imaging reflectometer on DIII-D tokamak.

System-on-chip millimeter wave integrated circuit technology is used on the two-dimensional millimeter-wave imaging reflectometer (MIR) upgrade for density fluctuation imaging on the DIII-D tokamak fusion plasma. Customized CMOS chips have been successfully developed for the transmitter module and receiver module array, covering the 55-75GHz working band. The transmitter module has the capability of simultaneously launching eight tunable probe frequencies (>0 dBm output power each). The receiver enclosure contains 12 receiver modules in two vertical lines. The quasi-optical local oscillator coupling of previous MIR systems has been replaced with an internal active frequency multiplier chain for improved local oscillator power delivery and flexible installation in a narrow space together with improved shielding against electromagnetic interference. The 55-75GHz low noise amplifier, used between the receiver antenna and the first-stage mixer, significantly improves module sensitivity and suppresses electronics noise. The receiver module has a 20 dB gain improvement compared with the mini-lens approach and better than -75 dBm sensitivity, and its electronics noise temperature has been reduced from 55000K down to 11200K. The V-band MIR system is developed for co-located multi-field investigation of MHD-scale fluctuations in the pedestal region with W-band electron cyclotron emission imaging on DIII-D tokamak.

Adaptive Capon beamforming for lensless electron cyclotron emission imaging with high spatial resolution

Electron cyclotron emission (ECE) imaging diagnostics incorporating a lensless approach have been developed for measurements involving active spatial selectivity and direction-of-arrival estimation. The Capon method for adaptive-array analysis was proposed to improve the spatial resolution of the two-dimensional ECE imaging technique. Broadband noise source emissions were used to simulate the ECE to verify the practical effectiveness of the Capon method in the ECE imaging. Multiple noise source emission positions were properly estimated with a high spatial resolution using the Capon method.

ECEI characterization of pedestal fluctuations in quiescent H-mode plasmas in DIII-D

Electron cyclotron emission imaging (ECEI) is employed to characterize the magneto hydraulics dynamics (MHD) fluctuations at the quiescent H-mode pedestals in DIII-D. Pedestal MHD fluctuations cause ECE radiation temperature fluctuations in both the pedestal and scrape-off-layer (SOL). A synthetic ECE platform is utilized for detailed interpretation of the ECEI signals in the SOL and pedestal regions. It is observed that the ECE radiation , which is located in the SOL region according to the cold and optically thick plasma resonance assumption, is extremely sensitive to MHD radial displacements near the separatrix, exhibiting radiation inversion to at the pedestal. Here, the radiation inversion refers to the opposite phase between the radiation fluctuation at the pedestal and the radiation fluctuation at the SOL. Consequently, the quasi-coherent MHD (QCM), which displays a radiation inversion, is found to be consistent with an MHD radial structure that has a strong displacement near the separatrix. In contrast, the edge harmonic oscillation (EHO), which displays weak or no inversion, is found to be consistent with an MHD radial displacement structure peaking at the pedestal top. The ECEI data, interpreted with synthetic ECE, are in qualitative agreement with beam emission spectroscopy measurements on DIII-D for the relative radial extent and localization of the EHO and QCM. The high sensitivity of ECE radiation to separatrix displacements can be used to detect turbulence or MHD fluctuations near the separatrix, which may affect the transport across the separatrix and the wetted area in the divertor. The inversion measured with an ECE or ECEI system potentially provides important information on the magnetic field at the separatrix, which helps constrain the pedestal equilibrium reconstruction and achieve an unambiguous mapping of the ECE/ECEI system with respect to the separatrix.

Behavior of multiple modes before and during minor disruption with the external resonant magnetic perturbations on J-TEXT tokamak

The behavior of multiple modes before and during minor disruption with the external resonant magnetic perturbations (RMPs) has been studied on a J-TEXT tokamak. The main component of RMPs is m/n = 2/1, where m and n are the numbers of the poloidal and toroidal modes, respectively. During the mode-locking caused by RMPs, it is found that before a minor or a major disruption (if there is no minor disruption), strong oscillations in both electron temperature and density occur if the edge safety factor q a > 3. The analysis shows that the oscillations are caused by the m/n = 3/1 mode. In addition, using the ECE, Mirnov coils and 2D electron cyclotron emission imaging diagnostic systems, it is found that a thermal collapse occurs on the inner side of the 2/1 magnetic island during the minor disruption, and before the collapse, a 3/2 island increases, after the collapse, the 3/2 island may disappear. Moreover, the study also shows that these 3/1, 2/1 and 3/2 modes play roles in the thermal collapse of disruptions.

Magnetic reconnection rate during sawtooth crashes in ASDEX Upgrade

The radial velocity of the plasma core during the sawtooth crashes has been measured for the first time with electron cyclotron emission imaging diagnostic. The measurements have been compared with nonlinear two-fluid simulation. The comparison reveals good qualitative and quantitative agreement, which indicates that two-fluid effects (inertia and pressure gradient of electrons) are sufficient for the correct prediction of the experimental results. Contrarily, the crash time of the Kadomtsev model, which is based on a single-fluid picture of magnetic reconnection, disagrees with the experimental results.

Advances in physics and applications of 3D magnetic perturbations on the J-TEXT tokamak

In the last two years, three major technical improvements have been made on J-TEXT in supporting of the expanded operation regions and diagnostic capabilities. (1) The successful commission of the 105 GHz/500 kW/1 s electron cyclotron resonance heating (ECRH) system increasing the core electron temperature from 0.9 keV up to around 1.5 keV. (2) The poloidal divertor configuration with an X-point in the high-field side has been achieved. In particular, the 400 kW electron cyclotron wave has also been successfully injected into the diverted plasma. (3) A 256-channel electron cyclotron emission imaging diagnostic system and two sets of four-channel Doppler backscattering diagnostics have been successfully developed on J-TEXT, allowing detailed measurement of the electron temperature and density fluctuations for turbulence and MHD research. The locked mode (LM), especially the 2/1 LM, is one of the biggest threats to the plasma operation. Both the thresholds of 2/1 and 3/1 LM are observed to vary non-monotonically on electron density. The electrode biasing was applied successfully to unlock the LM from either a rotating or static resonant magnetic perturbation (RMP) field. In the presence of 2/1 LM, three kinds of standing wave (SW) structures have been observed to share a similar connection to the island structure, i.e. the nodes of the SWs locate around the O- or X-points of the 2/1 island. The control and mitigation of disruption is essential to the safe operation of ITER, and it has been systematically studied by applying a RMP field, massive gas injection (MGI) and shattered pellet injection on J-TEXT. When the RMP-induced 2/1 LM is larger than a critical width, the MGI shutdown process can be significantly influenced. If the phase difference between the O-point of LM and the MGI valve is +90° (or −90°), the penetration depth and the assimilation of impurities can be enhanced (or suppressed) during the pre-thermal quench (TQ) phase and result in a faster (or slower) TQ. A secondary MGI can also suppress the runaway electron (RE) generation, if the additional high-Z impurity gas arrives at the plasma edge before TQ. When the secondary MGI has been applied after the formation of the RE current plateau, the RE current can be dissipated, and the dissipation rate increases with the injected impurity quantity but saturates with a maximum of 28 MA s−1. The non-local transport is experimentally observed in the ion transport channel. The electron thermal diffusivity significantly increases with the ECRH power. Theoretical work shows that significant intrinsic current can be driven by electromagnetic turbulence, and the robust formation mechanism of the E × B staircase is identified from the Hasegawa–Wakatani system.

W-Band Modular Antenna/Detector Array for the Electron Cyclotron Emission Imaging System in KSTAR

A design of a modular antenna/detector array for the electron cyclotron emission (ECE) imaging system at the Korea Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research (KSTAR) is proposed. The modular antenna/detector array is based on a unit antenna/detector module, which consists of an elliptical mini-lens, a dual-dipole antenna, an antenna balun, a low-noise amplifier, and a metal frame. The proposed modular antenna/detector array resolves the problem in the conventional antenna/detector array where one faulty channel requires the entire array to be removed for the service. With the proposed modular array, each channel module can be easily and independently removed and replaced without interference to the rest of the array, thus minimizing the interrupted service time for maintenance. Moreover, the unit channel modules can be efficiently updated under a variety of the tokamak operation conditions. The antenna/detector modules are optimized to have improved performance, and are tested in a W-band test setup, and consistently provide the gain increase by 10~20 dB as compared with the conventional antenna/detector array. A set of the proposed modular antenna/detector array is currently installed and tested in the KSTAR ECE imaging system, and will consistently produce the improved ECE imaging to monitor MHD instability activities under various plasma operation conditions.

Realization of automatic data cleaning and feedback conditioning for J-TEXT ECEI signals based on machine learning

In recent years, Electron Cyclotron Emission Imaging (ECEI) diagnostics and many other imaging diagnostics have become increasingly important in magnetic confinement fusion research. When the image quality becomes worse due to bad pixels, it becomes an important issue for imaging diagnostics. To automatically identify and classify abnormal ECEI signals, a classification algorithm for ECEI signals based on machine learning was developed for the J-TEXT ECEI diagnostic. Incorporated with the digital control function of J-TEXT ECEI, the channels of low-attenuation saturated signals and weak signals can be corrected by adjusting the attenuation levels. At present, the automatic data cleaning and feedback conditioning unit has been set up and applied to the J-TEXT ECEI. The accuracy rate of the classification algorithm on the external test dataset reaches 93.8%. Feedback conditioning can be completed between two discharge shots. This unit can preprocess the diagnostic data for physical analysis and improve the quality of ECEI signals.

Near real-time streaming analysis of big fusion data

Experiments on fusion plasmas produce high-dimensional data time series with ever-increasing magnitude and velocity, but turn-around times for analysis of this data have not kept up. For example, many data analysis tasks are often performed in a manual, ad-hoc manner some time after an experiment. In this article, we introduce the Delta framework that facilitates near real-time streaming analysis of big and fast fusion data. By streaming measurement data from fusion experiments to a high-performance compute center, Delta allows computationally expensive data analysis tasks to be performed in between plasma pulses. This article describes the modular and expandable software architecture of Delta and presents performance benchmarks of individual components as well as of an example workflow. Focusing on a streaming analysis workflow where electron cyclotron emission imaging (ECEi) data is measured at KSTAR on the National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center’s (NERSC’s) supercomputer we routinely observe data transfer rates of about 4 Gigabit per second. In NERSC, a demanding turbulence analysis workflow effectively utilizes multiple nodes and graphical processing units and executes them in under 5 min. We further discuss how Delta uses modern database systems and container orchestration services to provide web-based real-time data visualization. For the case of ECEi data we demonstrate how data visualizations can be augmented with outputs from machine learning models. By providing session leaders and physics operators, results of higher-order data analysis using live visualizations may make more informed decisions on how to configure the machine for the next shot.

Implementation of spectral clustering algorithm for automatic identification of plasma coherence patterns

The number of data accumulated by controllable nuclear fusion devices is too large, and a large number of data have not been fully exploited. In such big data processing machine learning can play an important role. Therefore, in this work the spectral clustering method is used to realize the automatic processing of data, which can easily and quickly find the pattern information contained in the data. The discovery of these patterns is of great significance in improving plasma confinement and understanding plasma physics. In addition, in this work the spectral clustering method is applied to the electron cyclotron emission imaging (ECEI), one-dimensional diagnostic system electron cyclotron emissiometer, magnetic probe, soft X-ray, fast radiation (fast bolometer) and other different diagnostic systems on the EAST tokamak device. The sawtooth pattern is identified, the migration of the spectral clustering method is verified, and the problems of poor data processing migration in supervised learning and the need to rely on a large number of labeled data are solved. Finally, in this work, the ECEI and magnetic probe data are used to discover a possible new mode in the time domain and frequency domain respectively, which provides a new idea for exploring new modes.

System-on-chip integrated circuit technology applications on the DIII-D tokamak for multi-field measurements

Several mm-wave diagnostics on the DIII-D tokamak provide multi-scale and multi-dimensional measurements of plasma profile evolution and turbulence fluctuations. Mm-wave fusion plasma diagnostics that adopt system-on-chip integrated circuit technology can provide better space utilization, flexible installation, and improved sensitivity. In order to further extend this technology for additional fusion facilities with a higher toroidal magnetic field, V-band (55–75 GHz) and F-band (90–140 GHz) chips for Microwave Imaging Reflectometer (MIR) and Electron Cyclotron Emission Imaging (ECEI) instruments are developed and tested in the Davis Millimeter Wave Research Center (DMRC). Current measurement data show that correlation between these SoC-based diagnostic instruments with other state-of-the-art diagnostics enables co-located multi-field turbulence fluctuation measurement.

Development of the Q-band ECE imaging system in the large helical device

In this study, we developed the Electron Cyclotron Emission Imaging (ECEI) system with the Q-band in the Large Helical Device (LHD). ECEI measurement makes it possible to obtain the spatiotemporal structure of magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) instabilities in the high-β plasma. Although there were several difficulties for realizing the multi-channelization, such as local oscillator (LO) optics and an expensive high-power LO source, we have solved these problems by developing a Local Integrated Antenna array (LIA) which has an internal LO supply, using a frequency doubler integrated circuit on each channel, instead of a conventional Horn-antenna Mixer Array (HMA) with common LOs. In addition, we have made some improvements to enhance the quality of the measurement signal. First, we developed and introduced notch filters that prevent the strong Electron Cyclotron Resonance Heating (ECRH) stray signal from being mixed into the measurement circuit. Second, the position of the doubler built in the printed circuit board was reconsidered to prevent the mixing of higher harmonic components into the mixer. Also, we have adopted the Logarithmic detector (LOG detector) to deal with the wide dynamic range of the plasma fluctuation. After these improvements, for the first time, we could successfully obtain the initial results of the two-dimensional temperature distribution and its fluctuation distribution in the LHD.
