Dual modification of cobalt silicate nanobelts by Co3O4 nanoparticles and phosphorization boosting oxygen evolution reaction properties

Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) process is the “bottleneck” of water splitting, and the low-cost and high-efficient OER catalysts are of great importance and attractive but they are still challenging. Herein, a dual modification strategy is developed to tune and enrich the structure of cobalt silicate (Co2SiO4) showing boosted OER properties. Cobalt oxide (Co3O4) decorated Co2SiO4 nanobelts, denoted as CS, is firstly prepared using a Co-based precursor by a facile hydrothermal reaction. Then, cobalt phosphide (CoP) nanoparticles are in-situ grown on CS (denoted as CS-P) by the phosphorization process, which provide many active sites and boost the surface reactivity. The experimental results and density function theory (DFT) calculations both reveal that the CoP on CS can improve the conductivity and ensure fast kinetics, thus leading to boost the OER properties of Co2SiO4. When the phosphorization temperature is at 400 °C (CS-P400), it gains the lowest overpotential of 297 mV, which is much lower than CS (340 mV) and Co2SiO4 (409 mV) at 10 mA·cm−2, and even superior to the state-of-the-art transition metal silicates. CS-P400 also achieves high electrochemical active surface area (ECSA) and small Tafel slope owing to its porous structures with large specific surface area and nanosheet-like structures which are good for exposing many active sites and favorable to the fast kinetics. This work not only provides a dual modification route to boost catalytic activity of Co2SiO4 (CS-P400), but also sheds light on a new avenue for developing highly dispersed CoP on silicates to boost OER performances.

Assembly and operation optimization of proton exchange membrane water electrolyzer for performance enhancement

Abstract Proton exchange membrane water electrolysis (PEMWE) for hydrogen production possesses wide-ranging and rapid dynamic response capabilities, offering promising applications in the consumption of new energy sources and the dynamic balancing of power grids with a high proportion of renewable energy. The assembly and operating conditions of PEMWE significantly affect its performance. Therefore, thoroughly studying and understanding the influence of PEMWE’s assembly and operating conditions on water electrolysis performance are crucial for enhancing PEMWE’s performance and promoting its applications. In this research, the influence of installation preload torque, feedwater flow rate, and operating temperature on the performance of the electrolyzer, including the electrochemical active specific surface area (ECSA), high-frequency resistance (HFR) and various types of polarizations (including activation polarization, ohmic polarization, and mass transfer polarization) during the operation of the electrolyzer, were detailedly investigated. The results showed that the optimal preload torque and operating temperature for the electrolyzer were 3 Nm and 80°C. Under these conditions, an optimized PEMWE performance would be achieved by ensuring that the feedwater flow rate exceeded the water consumption during electrolysis.

Development of an efficient bifunctional electrocatalyst based on Co/CoSe2 nanoparticles embedded in N, Se co-doped carbon for AEMFC and rechargeable Zn-air battery

We suggest a hollow-structured N, Se dual-doped carbon framework embedded with Co/CoSe2 nanoparticles (Co/CoSe2@NSeC) as highly efficient bifunctional electrocatalyst for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The prepared electrocatalyst exhibits high electrochemical active surface area attributed to its unique hollow/porous structure and defective heteroatom doping sites. Furthermore, the strongly coupled heterojunction between Co and CoSe2 species not only provides abundant and highly active sites but also generates built-in electric field, thereby promoting electron transfer during the electrocatalytic reaction. Based on the above considerations, the prepared catalyst shows excellent bifunctional electrocatalytic performance. Leveraging the excellent ORR activity of Co/CoSe2@NSeC, alkaline exchange membrane fuel cells (AEMFC) with the Co/CoSe2@NSeC as air cathode exhibits high power density of 171.23 mW cm2. Furthermore, the rechargeable Zn-air battery employing the Co/CoSe2@NSeC shows high specific capacity (729.4 mAh gZn−1), peak power density (192.88 mW cm2), and sustained stability over 300 cycles.

Nanostructure-dependent colouration efficiency of electrochromic coatings using 0D, 1D, and 2D WO3 for smart windows

Towards the development of highly efficient electrochromic coatings, the crystallinity, morphology (e.g. size and shape) of electrochromic nanomaterials, and their charge insertion capacities play a significant role. Herein, we report the structure-dependent colouration effciency in electrochromic coatings based on the use of 0D, 1D and 2D tungsten trioxide (WO3) nanostructures. A series of WO3 with different nanostructures were prepared and used as working electrodes to fabricate electrochromic devices for smart windows applications. Facile spray coating was applied on fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) substrate to make ∼70 ​% transparent working electrodes to investigate their charge insertion capacities, electrochromic active surface area, and colouration efficiency. Results showed that the 2D WO3 nanoflakes displayed the highest diffusion coefficient for the intercalation of 1.52 ​× ​10 −10 ​cm2/s with an increased electrochemical active surface area of 25.10 ​mF/cm2, a large modulation of optical reflectance (42.63 ​%) with 3.79 ​s shorter response time for bleaching and a greater colouration efficiency (CE) value (89.29 ​cm2/C) at 700 ​nm compared to the CE value for 1D WO3 (of 22 ​cm2/C) and 0D WO3 (8 ​cm2/C). The outcome of this study provides a new insight and valuable contribution to design an efficient electrochromic coating by controlling and optimising the nanostructures of selective electrochromic materials.

High-performance porous 3D Ni skeleton electrodes for the oxygen evolution reaction

A key component of green hydrogen production technologies is the fabrication of large-scale porous transport layer (PTL) for use in anion electrolyte membrane water electrolysers (AEMWEs). One strategy to achieve that goal is to manufacture Ni-based 3D electrode skeletons that can be further catalyzed to achieve high current densities at low overpotentials. In the present work, shock-wave induced spray (SWIS) and cold spray (CS) deposition techniques were used to prepare 20 cm2 Ni-based electrode skeletons. In our experimental conditions, the porosity of coatings prepared using the SWIS deposition system and Ni powders with particle sizes D50 = 32 and 75 μm never exceeded 28%. Higher porosity could only be achieved using the CS deposition system and a spheroidal Ni–Al powder, whose particles consist of an aluminum core encapsulated in a nickel shell. After Al leaching in an alkaline solution, the resulting electrodes showed good mechanical and structural integrity with up to 41% porosity. The electrochemical active surface area of the most porous electrodes is a factor of 2100 larger than a polished Ni plate, and it has superaerophobic properties with a captive air bubble contact angle of 151°. During 1 h of electrolysis, the overpotential at 100 mA cm−2 of the most active leached Ni–Al cold spray deposited electrode was 330 mV, compared to 380 mV for a Ni foam electrode.

Trace RuO2 nanoparticles loaded nickel-coated multi-walled carbon nanotubes to boost hydrogen evolution reaction under acidic and alkaline media

Developing low-cost catalysts with high activity for the Hydrogen Evolution Reaction (HER) is a main challenge to reduce the dependence on precious metals while maintaining the catalytic activity. In this study, nickel-plated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (Ni-MWCNTs) with a large number of active sites were selected, and Ni-MWCNTs electrocatalysts loaded with trace amounts of RuO2 nanoparticles were prepared by annealing treatment, which exhibited excellent HER performances in both acidic and alkaline media. The RuO2 nanoparticles loaded nickel-coated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (RuO2@Ni-MWCNTs) had a small electrochemical impedance spectrum (EIS) and a large electrochemically active surface area (ECSA). Notably, RuO2@Ni-MWCNTs with less than 1 % Ru content exhibited excellent catalytic activities in both acidic and alkaline solutions. The results showed that the overpotentials of RuO2@Ni-MWCNTs were 20.2 mV (alkaline) and 73.7 mV (acidic), respectively. After stabilization at 20 mA cm−2 for 90 h, the evaluation results showed that RuO2@Ni-MWCNTs could maintain their catalytic efficiency without significant degradation.

Theoretical design and synthesis of Co30Ni60/CC for high selective methanol oxidation assisted energy-saving hydrogen production

The integration of methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) with hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) represents an advanced approach to hydrogen production technology. Nonetheless, the rational design and synthesis of bifunctional catalysts for both MOR and HER with exceptional activity, stability and selectivity present formidable challenges. In this work, firstly, density functional theory (DFT) was utilized to design and evaluate material models with high performance for both MOR and HER. Secondly, guided by DFT, Co30Ni60/CC (CC, carbon cloth) composites with a leaf-like nanosheet structure were successfully fabricated via electrodeposition. In the MOR process, Ni acts as the predominant active center, while Co amplifies the electrochemically active surface area (ECSA) and enhances the selectivity of methanol oxidation. Conversely, in the HER process, Co serves as the primary active center, with Ni augmenting the charge transfer rate. The electrochemical results demonstrate that Co30Ni60/CC exhibits exceptional performance in both MOR and HER at a current density (j) of 10 mA cm−2, with peak potentials of 1.323 V and −95 mV, respectively. Additionally, it shows remarkable selectivity for the oxidiation of methanol to high value-added formic acid. Thirdly, following a 100 h chronopotentiometry (CP) test, the required potential demonstrates an increase of 4.9 % (MOR) and 8.1 % (HER), signifying the superior stability of Co30Ni60/CC compared to those reported in the literature. The exceptional performance of Co30Ni60/CC can be primarily attributed to that the leaf-like nanosheets structure not only exposes a plethora of active sites but also facilitates electrolyte diffusion, the monolithic structure prepared by electrodeposition enhances its stability, and the transfer of electrons from Co to Ni regulates its electronic structure, as corroborated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and density of states (DOS) analyses. Finally, at the same j, the voltage required by the Co30Ni60/CC||Co30Ni60/CC electrolytic cell, powered by an electrochemical workstation, is 198 mV lower than that required for alkaline water-splitting. Meanwhile, at higher j (100 mA cm−2), the electrolytic cell exhibits sustained and stable operation for 150 h, enabling high-efficiency hydrogen production and the synthesis of high value-added formic acid.

Electrochemical sensors for sensitive and selective detection of nitrite based on flexible gold microneedle like nanodendrites modified electrode

In this study, we present a new approach utilizing Au nanodendrites (Au NDs) to modify flexible screen-printed carbon electrodes (FSPCEs), offering an efficient platform for voltammetric sensing of nitrite ions in food samples. The FSPCEs are created with gold leaf-like nanodendrites through a simple, one-step electrochemical deposition process. The direct growth of these Au NDs occurs efficiently on the carbon-paste electrode, eliminating the need for binders or additional reducing agents and organic solvents, owing to the aforementioned matrix. The modified electrodes serve as promising sensing platforms for nitrite detection. The outcomes demonstrated that a significant amount of AuNPs with dendritic morphologies were dispersed throughout the FSPCE.These novel flexible electrodes act as effective electrocatalyst for NO2− oxidation due to their large electrochemical active surface area (ECSA), well-dispersed Au nanostructures, and high electrical conductivity. The optimized sensor exhibits a wide linear response range from 0.02 to 5.8 µM, with 1.0 nM limit of detection, an impressive sensitivity of 52.529 µA µM−1 cm−2 and a quick current response time (< 3 s) towards nitrite ions. Additionally, the suggested sensor demonstrates high selectivity, reproducibility, and stability. Furthermore, the FSPCEs are evaluated for their ability to selectively detect nitrite ions in various food samples such as tap water, drinking water, milk, and fruit juices, comparing the results with standard methods in real sample analysis. The fabricated sensors show promising potential for practical applications in food and environmental analysis. Consequently, Au NDs@FSPCE electrode emerged to be a novel platform for NO2− electrochemical detection. Because of their great affinity for analytical substances in solutions, gold nanodendrites supported on flexible screen-printed carbon electrodes (FSPCEs) are very useful for electrode modifications. Their increased effective surface area, which greatly raises the electrode's sensitivity and specificity for a range of analytical applications, is responsible for their high affinity.

Fabrication of a graphene@Ni foam-supported silver nanoplates-PANI 3D architecture electrode for enzyme-free glucose sensing.

Reliable and cost-effective glucose sensors are in rising demand among diabetes patients. The combination of metals and conducting polymers creates a robust electrocatalyst for glucose oxidation, offering enzyme-free, high stability, and sensitivity with outstanding electrochemical results. Herein, graphene is grown on nickel foam by chemical vapor deposition to make a graphene@nickel foam scaffold (G@NF), on which silver nanoplates-polyaniline (Ag-PANI) 3D architecture is developed by sonication-assisted co-electrodeposition. The resulting binder-free 3D Ag-PANI/G@NF electrode was highly porous, as characterized by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Field emission scanning electron microscope, x-ray diffractometer, FTIR, and Raman spectroscopy. The binder-free 3D Ag-PANI/G@NF electrode exhibits remarkable electrochemical efficiency with a superior electrochemical active surface area. The amperometric analysis provides excellent anti-interference performance, a low limit of deduction (0.1 nM), robust sensitivity (1.7 × 1013µA mM-1cm-2), and a good response time. Moreover, the Ag-PANI/G@NF enzyme-free sensor is utilized to observe glucose levels in human blood serums and exhibits excellent potential to become a reliable clinical glucose sensor.

Achieving high capacity by controlling the size of Fe/Co-N-C(t) in the cathode of lithium-oxygen batteries

Two samples are synthesized in a bimetallic system of iron and cobalt using a Metal-Organic Framework (MOF). The duration of precursor addition to the reaction vessel is controlled to synthesize Fe/Co-N-C(10 h) and Fe/Co-N-C(At once). The structural properties of the samples are analyzed using XRD, Raman, FT-IR, SEM, TEM, BET, TGA and ICP. Electrochemical tests are performed to evaluate the activity of the prepared catalysts as lithium-oxygen battery cathode materials. The Fe/Co-N-C(At once) sample, with its larger surface area, shows a greater discharge capacity of 8670 mAhg-1 compared to the Fe/Co-N-C(10 h) sample, which has a discharge capacity of 8339 mAhg-1. However, the Fe/Co-N-C(10 h) sample has a larger electrochemical active surface area due to the presence of more metals in the MOF shell. This results in higher ORR/OER activity in an alkaline environment and greater stability (180 h) as a lithium-oxygen battery cathode compared to the Fe/Co-N-C(At once) sample, which exhibits stability for 90 h.

A Three–Dimensional Nanoscale View of Electrocatalyst Degradation in Hydrogen Fuel Cells

AbstractThe loss of platinum (Pt) electrochemically active surface area (ECSA) is a critical degradation mode that often becomes a limiting factor for heavy‐duty proton exchange membrane fuel cell vehicles. High surface area carbon supports have been shown to improve Pt dispersion and limit detrimental ionomer‐electrocatalyst interactions due to their large interior pore volume. In this work, using automated scanning transmission electron tomography, the degradation of nanoparticles located on the interior versus exterior surfaces of the carbon support is compared following a catalyst‐specific accelerated stress test (AST) of 90,000 voltage cycles between 0.6 V to 0.95 V. The results reveal a notable increase in median particle size for both interior and exterior Pt catalyst particles, with a slightly higher increase in particle size distribution and loss of specific surface area for the particles located on the exterior carbon surface. The fraction of Pt nanoparticles that reside within the interior of the carbon support also increased following the AST test, accompanied by evidence of an increase in average carbon mesopore size. The results shed light on the degradation mechanisms affecting electrochemical properties and the enhanced particle accessibility at lower relative humidity.

ZnO/NiFe2O4 heterostructure on nickel foam for the electrochemical detection of uric acid

In this study, heterostructures containing hydrothermally derived ZnO and combustion derived NiFe2O4 were co-deposited on nickel foam (NF) substrate. The modification of NF based substrate with the synthesised electrocatalysts is capable of increasing the electrochemically active surface area (ECSA) due to its porous network. The fabricated ZnO@NF, NiFe2O4@NF and ZnO/NiFe2O4@NF electrodes were tested in phosphate buffer saline (PBS) (pH = 7.4 ± 0.2) to understand their chemical kinetics which reveals a diffusion-controlled process. A comparative study reveals that the presence of surface charges on ZnO/NiFe2O4@NF electrode, influences the selectivity by enhancing the sensitivity towards UA which is attributed to the low charge transfer resistance and its higher ECSA of 1.487 cm2. The linear response current was observed between 0.52 mM and 1.48 mM with a detection limit (LOD) of 8.22 μM and limit of quantification (LOQ) of 27.4 μM. The sensitivity was found to be 2.31 mA.mM−1cm−2. The main advantages of ZnO/NiFe2O4@NF electrode is its simple fabrication technique which is inexpensive, stability over a period of 13 days with current loss of ∼19.2 %. The proposed ZnO/NiFe2O4 based non-enzymatic UA sensor is capable of selectively detecting UA in the presence of various interferents. UA acts as a biomarker for the diagnosis of different stages of chronic kidney disease (CKD). Hence, the validity of the developed heterostructure was investigated for real time UA sensing using spot urine samples. The recovery percentage was found to be between 95.7 % and 103.5 % further paving way for the use of this electrode for diagnosis of CKD.

Green Synthesis of Catalytic 3D Platinum Nanostructures from a Body‐Centered Cubic Pluronic Micellar Array Template

AbstractOrdered and well‐interconnected 3D electrode nanostructures open up exciting perspectives in catalysis, sensing and energy harvesting. Here, highly ordered 3D nano‐sized Pt mesoporous structures based on the I‐Wrapped Package (I‐WP) architecture with 13.5 nm unit cell size, previously unreported for metal nanomaterials, are presented. The samples are synthetized by soft‐template electrodeposition, using the body‐centred cubic (BCC) lyotropic crystalline micellar phase of Pluronic F68 as the template. The specific surface area of the resulting Pt nanoarchitecture is 36 ± 13 m2 g−1. The oxygen reduction reaction kinetic current is 0.98 mA cm−2; the current density normalized by the electrochemical active surface area and the weight of deposited Pt are 0.92 mA cm−2 and 153.53 A g−1, respectively, showing superior properties than conventional Pt nanostructures produced by surfactant templates. These results suggest a nanostructure based on the topology of the I‐WP minimal surface, representing the first case at this length scale from a metallic material, opening up new research directions in fundamental physics based on predicted thermal and phononic properties for this topology. The water‐based template provides a chemical‐free, eco‐friendly route for ordered mesoporous conductive nanomaterials manufacturing, inspiring future trends in the field.

Concave Grain Boundaries Stabilized by Boron Segregation for Efficient and Durable Oxygen Reduction.

The oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is a critical process that limits the efficiency of fuel cells and metal-air batteries due to its slow kinetics, even when catalyzed by platinum (Pt). To reduce Pt usage, enhancing both the specific activity and electrochemically active surface area (ECSA) of Pt catalysts is essential. Here, ultrafine, grain boundary (GB)-rich Pt nanoparticle assemblies are proposed as efficient ORR catalysts. These nanowires offer a large ECSA and a high density of concave GB sites, which improve specific activity. Atoms at these GB sites exhibit increased coordination and lattice distortion, leading to a favorable reduction in oxygen binding energy and enhanced ORR performance. Furthermore, boron segregation stabilizes these GBs, preserving active sites during catalysis. The resulting boron-stabilized Pt nanoassemblies demonstrate ORR specific and mass activities of 9.18 mA cm-2 and 6.40 A mg-1 Pt (at 0.9 V vs. RHE), surpassing commercial Pt/C catalysts by over 35-fold, with minimal degradation after 60000 potential cycles. This approach offers a versatile platform for optimizing the catalytic performance of a wide range of nanoparticle systems.

Plasma-assisted surface modification of MXene/carbon nanofiber electrodes for electrochemical energy storage

Inferior ion diffusion and relatively low electrochemically active sites of MXene-based electrodes make them becoming a major challenge to develop advanced electrode. Surface modification of electrodes using non-thermal plasma is a great way to suppress these challenges through providing more space for energy storage and facilitating the diffusion of electrolyte ions. Herein, the effect of nitrogen and oxygen plasma treatments on MXene/carbon nanofiber electrode is reported to enhance the electrochemical performance. In this work, Ti3C2Tx MXene/CNF composites were fabricated using a hybrid needleless electrospinning/plasma method for the electrochemical energy storage. Surface modification of the composites was performed by a DBD plasma reactor under N2 and O2 gases at low-pressure glow discharge as a two-step plasma treatment process. The results revealed that total pore volume and the surface area of the plasma-treated Ti3C2Tx/CNF composite increased considerably due to the N2 and O2 plasma treatments. It was found that the electrochemical active surface area of the N2/O2-plasma-treated Ti3C2Tx/CNF electrode enhanced by approximately two times compared to the non-treated one, leading to the specific capacitance of 162 F/g at 1 A g−1 in a 2 M KOH electrolyte. The increase in electrochemical activity arises from separate doping of N2 and O2 plasma, which not only improves the pore structure and wettability, but also modifies the electrical conductivity and capacitance of the electrode. The N2/O2-plasma-treated Ti3C2Tx/CNF electrode achieved excellent cycling stability with 124 % capacitance retention after 10,000 cycles, while the capacitance retention of the pure N2 and O2-plasma-treated Ti3C2Tx/CNF electrodes as well as the non-treated one were 111 %, 105 % and 98 %, respectively. Additionally, an asymmetric supercapacitor N2/O2-plasma-treated Ti3C2Tx/CNF//AC based on the N2/O2-plasma-treated Ti3C2Tx/CNF as a positive electrode and activated carbon (AC) as a negative electrode was successfully constructed, which demonstrated an energy density of 26.3 Wh kg−1 with a power density of 750 W kg−1 at the current density of 1 A g−1 with excellent capacitance retention (102 %) after 5000 cycles. This work provides a highly efficient method for the surface modification of MXene-based electrodes through non-thermal plasma treatment.

Nitrate Reduction Catalyzed by Bimetallic Silver‐Copper Macroporous Foams

AbstractIn this work we describe the use of bimetallic silver‐copper macroporous foams for electrochemical nitrate reduction in acidic conditions (pH 2, 0.1 M NaClO4). By carefully selecting the composition of the electrodeposition bath, we have successfully prepared foams with atomic percentage varying from Ag dominant to Cu dominant. Also, we have succeeded to obtain morphologies that vary between the one specific to pure Ag foam to the one specific to pure Cu foam. We have shown that these foams contain a pure silver phase and also a silver‐copper alloy. The electrochemical active surface area of the foams depends both on the morphology as well as on the atomic composition. These materials were used for the first time as catalysts for nitrate electrochemical reaction (NO3RR). Both liquid and gaseous products were quantified with several analytical techniques. It was shown that bimetallic foams present superior faradaic efficiency (FE) towards liquid products in comparisons with pure silver and copper foams, suggesting a synergetic contribution from both metals. The Ag94Cu6 (AgCu10) foam shows a FE as high as 92 % towards liquid products and the lowest FE (3 %) towards the undesired product, i. e. nitrous acid. Also, this material shows a better stability than pure copper materials in the presence of nitrate in acidic conditions.

Heterophase homojunction construction by amorphous TiOx and N–TiO2 photoanode for oxygen evolution reaction kinetics and charge carriers’ transportation enhancement

Photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting by TiO2 photoanode for clean hydrogen production is limited by the poor charge separation and inert oxygen evolution reaction (OER) kinetics issues for now. In this work, a band-matched heterophase homojunction (TiOx/N–TiO2) by amorphous TiOx and N-doped TiO2 nanotube arrays is constructed by two-step anodic oxidation and impregnation. The photocurrent density of TiOx/N–TiO2 reaches 0.69 mA/cm2 at 1.23 V vs. RHE, which is 1.86 folds than bare TiO2. The enhanced charge carriers' injection/separation efficiency, smaller Tafel slope (37.79 mF dec−1) and larger electrochemical active surface area (ECSA) (1.98 mF cm−2) of TiOx/N–TiO2 indicate that N doping and heterophase homojunction with amorphous TiOx effectively facilitate the surface OER kinetics and charge carriers' transportation. TiOx/N–TiO2 is annealed with a transformation of the surface amorphous TiOx layer into anatase TiO2 (a-TiOx/N–TiO2) to study the role of amorphous TiO2 in PEC water splitting. The photocurrent density and applied bias photon-to-current efficiency (ABPE) for a-TiOx/N–TiO2 decrease, even lower than the pristine TiO2. This is due to the reduction of surface oxygen vacancies, which causes the slowdown of OER kinetics and the weakening of charge carrier transportation ability. That is favorable for a better understanding of the OER kinetics and charge carriers’ transportation enhancement mechanism by the surficial modification on the semiconductor during the PEC water splitting.

In-situ growth strategy to synthesize porous nano-coral-like structure OER catalyst based on nife foam alloy substrate

The preparation of alloy-based catalysts is an effective approach to simplify the catalyst synthesis process for electrocatalysis. The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is considered a key step in water splitting. By incorporating interface engineering design, electronic state optimization, and heteroatom doping, the electrocatalytic performance can be enhanced. In this study, a simple method was used to activate the NiFe foam (NIF) alloy substrate by acid etching, followed by in-situ S-doping of Cr via a hydrothermal method to synthesize S-Cr0.6@NiFe/NIF catalyst material. Its outstanding porous nanocoral-like structure not only provides abundant active sites but also exhibits superior catalytic water splitting performance, demonstrating superhydrophilic and superaerophobic characteristics. At a current density of 10 mA cm−2, only 262 mV overpotential is required to drive the OER (under basic conditions of 1 M KOH), with a low Tafel slope (71.6 mV dec−1) and a large electrochemical active surface area (ECSA = 85.25 cm2). After 80 hours of OER test, the current density of S-Cr0.6@NiFe/NIF shows negligible change. This study provides an attractive, effective, and feasible method for the in-situ growth design of alloy-based catalysts.

Revolutionizing CO2‐to‐C2 Conversion: Unleashing the Potential of CeO2 Nanocores for Self‐ Supported Electrocatalysts with Cu2O Nanoflakes on 3D Graphene Aerogel

AbstractCu serves as a promising electrocatalyst for converting CO2 into valuable C2 products in CO2 reduction reactions (CO2RR). However, instability in CO* formation is crucial for CO2 adsorption‐ desorption still remains a challenge under reduction conditions. This study explores the impact of lanthanide oxide, particularly CeO2, on Cu‐based catalytic performances. By leveraging Ce's distinctive electronic structure, CO* species are stabilized during the reaction in CeO2─Cu2O, resulting in exceptional catalytic performance for CO2 electroreduction to C2 products. Hybridizing CeO2‐Cu2O with graphene aerogel enhances electrochemical active surface area and CO2RR efficiency. The resulting CeO2─Cu2O(10%)/GA electrocatalyst exhibits a remarkable faradaic efficiency for C2 products, exceeding 62%, alongside exceptional stability over 80 h with wide potential window (−0.8 to −1.2 V) using a H‐cell. Systematic investigations elucidate the intricate interplay between surface properties and catalytic activity. Furthermore, a solar cell‐ powered CO2 reduction system demonstrates consistent performance (−27.8 mA cm−2 at 3.46 V) under solar radiation of ≈100 mW cm−2, showcasing outstanding stability with nearly 100% retention over 4 h of continuous illumination. In short, by harnessing catalytic and electronic effects, this innovation advances the development of electrocatalysts with heightened CO2‐to‐C2 selectivity, bridging fundamental research with technological innovation to tackle critical global challenges.

Pd Nanoparticles Loaded on Cu Nanoplate Sensor for Ultrasensitive Detection of Dopamine.

The detection of dopamine is of great significance for human health. Herein, Pd nanoparticles were loaded on Cu nanoplates (Pd/Cu NPTs) by a novel liquid phase reduction method. A novel dopamine (DA) electrochemical sensor based on the Pd NPs/Cu/glass carbon electrode (Pd/Cu NPTs/GCE) was constructed. This sensor showed a wide linear range of 0.047 mM to 1.122 mM and a low limit of detection (LOD) of 0.1045 μM (S/N = 3) for DA. The improved performance of this sensor is attributed to the obtained tiny Pd nanoparticles which increase the catalytic active sites and electrochemical active surface areas (ECSAs). Moreover, the larger surface area of two-dimensional Cu nanoplates can load more Pd nanoparticles, which is another reason to improve performance. The Pd/Cu NPTs/GCE sensor also showed a good reproducibility, stability, and excellent anti-interference ability.
