Image-based sensing of salt stress in grapevine

Grapevine is among the most economically important crops suffering environmental constraints, including drought and salt stress. Although imaging is increasingly used to detect abiotic stress in agriculture, image-based phenotyping in grapevine still needs optimisation. This study presents the RGB-(red, green, blue)-based phenotyping of the early stage of salt stress response in potted grapevine (Aleatico/SO4) irrigated with saline water (100 mM NaCl) for 9 days in contrast with vines irrigated with fresh water. The response was measured using stomatal conductance (gs), net photosynthetic rate (A), transpiration (E), maximum potential photosynthetic efficiency (Fv/Fm), stem water potential (SWP) concurrently with RGB imaging via a robotised platform.The image-based phenotyping of salt-stressed vines employed two sets of measurements: (i) the pixel fraction of specific colour bands (Yellow, Green, Brown and Dark Green) and (ii) the mean pixel value of R, G and B and other RGB-based colorimetric indexes. Results show that the responses of gs, A, E, Fv/Fm were closely related to increasing soil electrical conductivity (EC) and that imaging could detect the EC threshold of approx. 4 dS m-1 causing a ~60 % decrease in these physiological traits compared to the pre-stress level. The SWP declined to about –0.7 MPa at the end of the experiment. The change of the relative pixel fraction of Dark Green to increasing EC has been analysed within a dose-response context, showing that a decrease of 1 % of the Dark Green colour band corresponded to the 4 dS m-1 EC threshold. This study also examined the use of the mean pixel value of the R, G and B channels as proxies of EC along with new RGB-based indexes resulting from the rearrangement of original R, G and B mean pixel values. Results show the suitability of the mean pixel value of R and Coloration Index [(R-B)/R] to serve as predictors of EC (R2 >= 0.80).

Study on analysis of kerf width variation in WEDM of insulating zirconia

ABSTRACT The shaping of the electrically insulating ceramic component in post sintered state has always been a difficulty in developing ceramic applications. Wire electrical discharge machining is an ascertained option to produce near net shape products in conductive materials. When it comes to insulating ceramics, sustaining the threshold electrical conductivity comes into the picture. This paper explores the feasibility of wire electrical discharge machining of Y2O3 stabilized ZrO2 with graphite powder additive mixed distilled water to replace the kerosene. In this research, the assisting electrode method has been employed to provide electrical conductivity to the work material to have initial electrical contact. Sparking initiates at assisting electrode coating and further conservation of electrical contact leads to successful engraving. Along with graphite concentration, the servo reference voltage is varied to study the kerf width variation deciding the accuracy of the component. The optimum graphite concentration was found to be in the range of 3 to 5 g/ltr. For this range, the ceramic erosion experienced to be most stable through optimum kerf width. Continuous increase in the kerf was observed with increasing gap voltage for individual graphite concentration.

A practical lab on composite materials and sensors, enhanced with electrical percolation threshold theory

Composites based on candle wax and pencil graphite were fabricated with different concentrations of graphite in the range 0% w/w to 70% w/w. These composites were fabricated (‘ironed’) into a sandwich structure with kitchen aluminum foil serving as electrodes. The composites’ electrical resistance was measured and it was found that the composite with 15% w/w of graphite was the best choice for further investigation according to the percolation theory of electrical conductivity thresholds. The wax–graphite composites were subjected to impact forces from a basketball, measured by the school’s PASCO equipment. A calibration curve of the specific electrical resistance versus the force of impact was constructed. Following the standards of the International Basketball Federation (FIBA), the quality of the basketball was evaluated in terms of the bounce height of a free-falling ball and the force acting on the ball during the impact with the floor. The wax–graphite composite with a threshold concentration of 15% w/w graphite proved to be a sensitive sensor for measuring the impact force, even when small forces were under investigation. The project as presented here could be used as a laboratory topic for advanced level high school physics or undergraduate lab work in materials science or applied physics.

Epoxy based hybrid nanocomposites: Fracture mechanisms, tensile properties and electrical properties

This work explore the effect of addition of a combination of rigid nanofillers and core–shell rubber nanoparticles on the fracture mechanics, tensile, electrical and thermo-mechanical properties of epoxy resins. SiO2 nanoparticles, multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT's), as rigid nanofillers, and core–shell rubber (CSR) nanoparticles, as soft nanofillers were used with bisphenol-A based epoxy resin. Further, the rigid fillers were added systematically with core–shell rubber nanoparticles and MWCNT’s to study the combined effect of rigid nanofillers and soft CSR nanoparticles. The resulting systems will be characterized by standard methods. This includes a thorough characterization of tensile, fracture mechanics, electrical, and thermal properties. The results show that the maximum increase of fracture toughness (207%) and fracture energy (910%) was obtained for system containing 5 wt% of CSR and 10% SiO2. The electrical conductivity threshold was obtained at 0.075 wt% of MWCNT’s modified system. The introduction of CSR nanoparticles significantly increase the fracture energy of the matrix with decrease in tensile strength and tensile modulus, which was further recovered with the addition of SiO2 nanoparticles. The analysis of the fracture surfaces revealed the toughening micro-mechanisms.

The Effect of Hybridized Carbon Nanotubes, Silica Nanoparticles, and Core-Shell Rubber on Tensile, Fracture Mechanics and Electrical Properties of Epoxy Nanocomposites.

The paper investigates the effect of adding a combination of rigid nanoparticles and core-shell rubber nanoparticles on the tensile, fracture mechanics, electrical and thermo-mechanical properties of epoxy resins. SiO2 nanoparticles, multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT’s), as rigid nanofillers, and core-shell rubber (CSR) nanoparticles, as soft nanofillers were used with bisphenol-A-based epoxy resin. Further, the rigid fillers were added systematically with core-shell rubber nanoparticles to investigate the commingled effect of rigid nanofillers and soft CSR nanoparticles. The resulting matrix will be broadly evaluated by standard methods to quantify tensile, fracture mechanics, electrical, and thermal properties. The results show that the electrical conductivity threshold is obtained at 0.075 wt. % for MWCNT-modified systems. For hybrid systems, the maximum increase of fracture toughness (218%) and fracture energy (900%) was obtained for a system containing 5 wt. % of CSR and 10 wt. % of SiO2. The analysis of the fracture surfaces revealed the information about existing toughening micro-mechanisms in the nanocomposites.

Milk electrical conductivity in Manchega ewes: Variation throughout milking and relation with mammary gland health status

The aim of this work was to study the effect of milking fraction and mammary gland health status on the electrical conductivity (EC) of milk from Manchega ewes, considering also the lactation number. To this end, we also studied the relationship of EC with milk macrocomposition, and the relation existing between EC and somatic cell count (SCC). Finally, the use of EC thresholds as a mastitis detection method (sensitivity, specificity, positive (PPV) and negative predictive value (NPV)) was assessed in each of the three fractions: first streams (F1), machine milk (F2) and stripping milk (F3). Milking fraction, mammary gland health status and lactation number had a significant effect on EC and SCC. In the case of EC, the milking fraction caused a more pronounced effect than health status of the glands or number of lactation (F = 19.95, 15.88 and 6.55, respectively; P < 0.5). In SCC, the gland health status caused the most pronounced effect followed by milking fraction and lactation number (F = 112.02, 6.89, and 5.28, respectively; P < 0.05). Changes in the milk composition, especially fat and lactose contents, explained the EC variation to a great extent. For the same EC threshold, specificity and sensitivity varied slightly depending on the milking fraction. NPV above 80% was obtained in the three milking fractions and at all EC thresholds tested, but PPV was only higher than 20% as of the threshold of 4.5, 4.4, and 4.2 mS/cm in F1, F2 and F3, respectively. From the results obtained, we concluded that the algorithm design for mastitis detection in sheep should include those factors affecting the composition and which therefore cause variations in EC, such as milking fraction, individual differences, lactation stage or lactation number.

Preparation of electroactive shape memory polyurethane/graphene nanocomposites and investigation of relationship between rheology, morphology and electrical properties

In this study, electroactive shape-memory polyurethane/graphene nanosheets nanocomposites were prepared. Shape-memory polyurethane (SMPU) was synthesized from polycaprolactone-diols (PCL-diols) with a molecular weight of 4000 g/mol, hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI), and 1,4-butanediol (BDO) with a molar ratio of 5 (HDI)/4 (BDO)/1 (PCL) via solution polymerization. Nanocomposites were prepared from neat SMPU and mono-layered fluffy graphene nanosheets through solution mixing method. Electrical resistivity test was employed to investigate the electrical conductivity threshold of the nanocomposites. The results showed that the nanocomposites with graphene content higher than 1.5 wt% had a reasonable conductivity to respond to the electrical current. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy confirmed the interaction between graphene nanosheets and SMPU chains by variation of hydrogen bonding content. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) thermograms and X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns showed that the crystalline structures of SMPU have been changed by incorporating of graphene nanosheets. Rheological examination showed that the percolation threshold to create a graphene network structure was 1.5 wt%. Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) images revealed percolation of graphene nanosheets in the electrically conductive nanocomposites. Mechanical and shape-memory tests revealed that the mechanical properties and shape-memory parameters were improved by the addition of graphene nanosheets. The changes in surface temperature under the examination with voltage of 75 V indicated that the temperature of the electrically conductive samples was significantly increased by flowing of electrical current. This increase in temperature led responsivity to the electrical current in SMPU nanocomposites containing 2 and 3 wt% graphene nanosheets.

Dispersion of Gravel Road Fine-Fractions as Influenced by Oil-Well Produced Water and Simulated Solutions of Various SAR, EC, and Ca/Mg Ratios

In the northern Great Plains, a potential road dust abatement is the application of oil-well produced water, also known as “brine.” However, little is known about the effectiveness of brine or its potential impacts on dispersion of road materials and the creation of dusts. This study aimed to investigate how sodium adsorption ratios (SAR), electrical conductivity (EC), and Ca/Mg ratios of simulated and non-simulated brine influenced dispersive reactions of three mineralogically different gravel road fine fractions. Ca/Mg ratios had little to no significant influence on the outcome of dispersion. Irrespective of the SAR or clay mineralogy, a threshold EC of 4 dS m−1 was sufficient to control road fine fraction dispersion. Actual oil-well produced water effect on dispersion followed the same order as that treated by simulated solution and the dispersion value can be well-predicted from EC. This information is useful to managers, regulators, scientists, and industry professionals considering the use of brine as a road dust control abatement.

Influence of Electrical and Ionic Conductivities of Organic Electronic Ion Pump on Acetylcholine Exchange Performance.

By using an easy and effective method of depositing conjugated polymers (PEDOT:PSS) on flexible substrates, a new design for organic bioelectronic devices has been developed. The purpose was to build up a system that mimics the motion of neurotransmitters in the synaptic cleft by obtaining an electrical to chemical signal transport. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and Raman measurements have demonstrated that electrochemical overoxidation region which separates the pristine PEDOT:PSS electrodes and allows ionic conduction has been achieved successfully. The influence of both electrical and ionic conductivities on organic electronic ion pump (OEIP) performances has been studied. The ultimate goal was to achieve the highest equilibrium current density at the lowest applied voltage via enhancing the electrical conductivity of PEDOT:PSS and ionic conductivity of electrochemically overoxidized region. The highest equilibrium current density, which corresponds to 4.81 × 1017 number of ions of acetylcholine was about 41 μA cm−2 observed for the OEIP with the electrical conductivities of 54 S cm−1. This was a threshold electrical conductivity beyond which the OEIP performances were not changed much. Once Nafion™ has been applied for enhancing the ionic conductivity, the equilibrium current density increased about ten times and reached up to 408 μA cm−2. Therefore, it has been demonstrated that the OEIP performance mainly scales with the ionic conductivity. A straightforward method of producing organic bioelectronics is proposed here may provide a clue for their effortless mass production in the near future.

Soil vs. groundwater: The quality dilemma. Managing nitrogen leaching and salinity control under irrigated agriculture in Mediterranean conditions

A 3-year field trial was carried out in southern Italy on an agricultural farm close to the seacoast of Manfredonia Gulf (Apulia Region) where crop irrigation with saline water is standard practice. Seawater intrusion into the groundwater, and the consequent soil salinization represent a serious environmental threat. Each year, two crop cycles were applied, in spring-summer and autumn-winter seasons, respectively. The crop pairing over the three years was tomato and spinach; zucchini and broccoli; pepper and wheat. Cultivation was performed in a field-unit characterised by three adjacent plots. At the centre of each plot, a hydraulically insulated drainage basin was dug (0.70m depth) to collect the draining water. The crops were irrigated with saline water and leaching treatments were applied with saline or fresh water whenever soil salinity reached a predetermined electrical conductivity threshold. Since soil salinity control might increase nitrate leaching, operational criteria should optimize the trade-off between the application of higher water volumes to reduce soil salinity and lower water volumes to protect groundwater quality from nitrate leaching. The amount of nitrogen leached from the soil root-zone was considerable (on average, 156kgNha−1year−1) and higher in autumn-winter than spring-summer (72 vs. 28% of the average annual value). In autumn-winter season, nitrogen losses were mainly due to plentiful nitrogen fertilisation and high rainfall. In spring–summer, extra irrigations promoted salt leaching together with nitrogen losses. To manage both irrigation and nitrogen fertilisation a “decoupling” strategy is recommended. This strategy suggests applying leaching preferably at the end of the spring-summer growing season, soon after crop harvesting or at the beginning of the autumn-winter season, before second crop cycle starting. In autumn-winter season, proper nitrogen supplies and timely top-dressing applications, still allow salts to be discharged by rainfalls but prevent nitrogen losses, thus preserving groundwater quality.

Early detection of clinical mastitis from electrical conductivity data in an automatic milking system

Mastitis adversely affects profit and animal welfare in the Australian dairy industry. Electrical conductivity (EC) is increasingly used to detect mastitis, but with variable results. The aim of the present study was to develop and evaluate a range of indexes and algorithms created from quarter-level EC data for the early detection of clinical mastitis at four different time windows (7 days, 14 days, 21 days, 27 days). Historical longitudinal data collected (4-week period) for 33 infected and 139 healthy quarters was used to compare the sensitivity (Se; target >80%), specificity (Sp; target >99%), accuracy (target >90%) and timing of ‘alert’ by three different approaches. These approaches involved the use of EC thresholds (range 7.5– 10 mS/cm), testing of over 250 indexes (created ad hoc), and a statistical process-control method. The indexes were developed by combining factors (and levels within each factor), such as conditional rolling average increase, percentage of variation, mean absolute deviation, mean error %; infected to non-infected ratio, all relative to the rolling average (3–9 data points) of either the affected quarter or the average of the four quarters. Using EC thresholds resulted in Se, Sp and accuracy ranging between 47% and 92%, 39% and 92% and 51% and 82% respectively (threshold 7.5 mS/cm performed best). The six highest performing indexes achieved Se, Sp and accuracy ranging between 68% and 84%, 60% and 85% and 56% and 81% respectively. The statistical process-control approach did not generate accurate predictions for early detection of clinical mastitis on the basis of EC data. Improved Sp was achieved when the time window before treatment was reduced regardless of the test approach. We concluded that EC alone cannot provide the accuracy required to detect infected quarters. Incorporating other information (e.g. milk yield, milk flow, number of incomplete milking) may increase accuracy of detection and ability to determine early onset of mastitis.

Relationship of mammary gland health status and other noninfectious factors with electrical conductivity of milk in Manchega ewes

Measuring the electrical conductivity (EC) of milk during milking has been extensively studied in cattle as a low-cost mastitis detection method that can be easily automated. The aim of this work was to study the effect of the health status of the glands and several noninfectious factors (lactation stage, milking session, and lactation number) that affect the use of EC measurement of milk to detect mastitis in dairy sheep livestock. Likewise, we studied the relation between EC and milk composition (macrocomposition and mineral content) and between EC and somatic cell count (SCC). Finally, we evaluated the use of EC thresholds as a mastitis detection method. To this end, we monitored the glandular milk EC throughout 2 consecutive lactations, during which 42 and 40 ewes were controlled, respectively. We carried out 7 biweekly checks, analyzing the EC, SCC, composition, and mineral content of glandular milk at morning and evening milkings. Before the morning milking, samples were aseptically collected for bacteriological analysis, and the results along with the SCC were used to classify the glands according to their sanitary status (healthy, latently infected, or infected). Lactation stage, parity, milking (morning or evening), health status, and the interactions of parity with health status, lactation stage with health status, and parity with lactation stage all had a significant effect on SCC and EC of the milk. The correlation between EC and SCC was only significant when all the data were analyzed jointly (r = 0.33) and for SCC ≥ 600.000 cells/mL (r = 0.25). The changes in milk composition, mainly in fat content, largely explained the variation in EC (R2 = 0.69). For the same EC threshold, the specificity and sensitivity varied depending on the parity or the milking, with the negative predictive value obtained being higher than the positive predictive value at all times. We concluded that developing methods of detecting mastitis in sheep by milk EC readings would require consideration of noninfectious factors that also affect the gauging of EC. One option to consider would be individualized daily monitoring of the glands, as demonstrated in other species such as cattle and goat.

Fertigation Strategies for Improving Water Use Efficiency and Limiting Nutrient Loss in Soilless Hippeastrum Production

Implementing nutrient management strategies in soilless culture, which improve water use efficiency (WUE) and limit the loss of eutrophying elements without affecting crop performance, is a priority for the floriculture industry. The aim of the current research was to assess the effect of two nutrient management strategies, based on electrical conductivity (EC) or nitrate-nitrogen (N-NO3−) concentration control on plant growth, ornamental quality, plant–water relations, mineral composition, and WUE of greenhouse Hippeastrum grown in semiclosed soilless system. The recirculating nutrient solution was discharged whenever a threshold EC value of 3.0 dS·m−1 was reached (EC-based strategy), or when N-NO3− concentration decreased below the limit of 1.0 mol·m−3 (nitrate-based strategy). There were no significant differences in terms of plant growth parameters, stomatal resistance, leaf water relations, and macronutrient composition in plant tissues between the two nutrient management strategies. In the EC- and the nitrate-based strategies, the recirculating nutrient solution was flushed 10 and 5 times, respectively. The water loss (WL) and the total water use (Wuse) in the EC-based strategy were significantly higher by 261.1% and 61.5%, respectively, compared with the N-NO3−-based strategy. In contrast with the EC-based strategy, the adoption of the N-NO3−-based strategy significantly minimized the nitrate, phosphate, and potassium emissions to the environment. The effective WUE of the system (WUES) recorded in the N-NO3−-based strategy was higher by 55.9% compared with the one recorded with the EC-based strategy.

Mechanical and electrical properties of multi walled carbon nanotube/ABC block terpolymer composites

Composites of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) in ABC block terpolymer matrices of different compositions are studied. The composites were obtained by dispersion of MWCNTs in poly(styrene-block-butadiene-block-methyl methacrylate) (SBM) in a selective solvent for the M block, followed by solvent evaporation and compression molding. The structures of the MWCNT/SBM composites are investigated by transmission electron microscopy. The processing conditions, i.e. solvent cast or compression molding, induce different non-equilibrium microstructures and the MWCNTs modify the SBM organization only locally. We show that by fixing the processing procedure we are able to obtain samples with reproducible microstructure and properties. The electrical conductivity thresholds of these composites are lower than 1wt.%. The reinforcing effect of the MWCNTs measured by dynamical mechanical analysis is mainly related to the SBM microstructures of the matrix and to the MWCNT dispersion quality.

Analysis of the influence of variation factors on electrical conductivity of milk in Murciano-Granadina goats

The aim of this study was to obtain further knowledge on electrical conductivity (EC) of milk as a tool for detecting mastitis in goats. The effect of farm, parity, stage of lactation, and health status of the glands on EC, and the somatic cell count (SCC) of milk was analyzed. Additionally, relationships between EC and chemical composition and SCC were studied. Finally, characteristics of EC and SCC (sensitivity and specificity) as diagnostic tests used to detect mastitis were studied. One hundred and five Murciano-Granadina goats were enrolled in the study. Milk samples (by gland) were collected monthly for 7 mo on 3 farms in the southeastern Spain. To establish the health status, milk samples were aseptically collected before milking by gland. Foremilk (by gland) was collected to analyze EC, SCC, and chemical composition. Glands were classified according to the health status as free of mastitis, bacterial mastitis, or unspecific mastitis. The effects of farm, parity, and stage of lactation, as well as the interactions between health status and parity, parity and stage of lactation, and health status and stage of lactation were associated with EC. Changes in the milk's chemical composition (particularly of chloride ions) explained most of the variance in EC (R2=0.91). The strongest association between EC and SCC was found at SCC >2×106 cells/mL (r=0.42). The use of a single EC threshold for all animals and farms for detecting mastitis led to limited results for mastitis detection, which, in any case, favors negative predictive values over positive predictive values. This study revealed that factors, other than the health status, affecting EC hamper the use of an EC threshold for mastitis detection with sufficient specificity on all animals. Any detection system based on EC of milk should consider these factors, as well as specific variations for each of the animals.

The role of interfacial compatibilization upon the microstructure and electrical conductivity threshold in polypropylene/expanded graphite nanocomposites

AbstractAttempts have been made to evaluate the effect of interface and degree of interfacial interaction upon electrical conductivity threshold in polypropylene/expanded graphite (PP/EG) nanocomposites, and dispersion state of graphite nanosheets. For this purpose, maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene (PPgMA) and maleic anhydride grafted EPDM (EPDMgMA) were used as compatibilizer. Nanocomposite samples containing 1–5 vol% of EG were prepared by melt mixing method using laboratory scale internal mixer. Characterization was carried out by using X‐ray diffraction (XRD), differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), thermo‐gravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), and rheo‐mechanical spectroscopy (RMS). The conductivity measurements were carried out by using four point probe method according to ASTM D991. Results showed that the conductivity threshold is controlled by the extent of interfacial interaction between PP and EG. So, better conductivity was obtained using PPgMA as compatibilizer which causes higher level of interaction between PP and EG, and therefore better dispersion of the EG nanolayers in the polymer matrix. On the other hand, high levels of compatibilizers, especially EPDMgMA, caused formation of separated aggregates of EG shelled with the compatibilizer, which results in the reduction of conductivity of the nanocomposites. This finding has been verified by SEM, RMS, and conductivity measurements. Effects of EG nanolayers on crystalline structure and thermal decomposition temperature of the nanocomposites have also been investigated by DSC and TGA, respectively. Osmotic and ionic effects of various electrolytes on the growth of wheat

Pot experiments were conducted using a sandy loam soil and various electrolyte solutions such as NaCl, CaCl2, Na2SO4, and Hoagland nutrient solution containing all macro- and micro-nutrient elements in appropriate proportions, inducing different electrical conductivity (EC) levels of the soil solution during the growth of Krichauff wheat while the water content in the pot soils was maintained at field capacity. The resulting differences in dry matter production after 40 days of growth clearly indicated the continuous operation of osmotic effect as the EC of the soil solution increased from 0.7 to 41.0 dS/m. However, the osmotic effect became dominant and severely restricted plant growth when the soil solution EC increased above a ‘threshold value’, which was 25 dS/m, corresponding to an osmotic pressure of 900 kPa, in this experiment. Below this EC value, particularly at low EC values, ionic effects due to Na+, Ca2+, SO42–, and Cl– were also evident, but it could not be concluded whether these effects were due to toxicity or ion imbalance. The osmotic effect at EC values above the threshold resulted in greatly reduced water uptake from pot soils, the unused water being in the range 89–96% of the field capacity of the soil. Water use efficiency is a major factor in profitable and sustainable dryland agriculture. Both soil management and selection and breeding of salt-tolerant plants should concentrate on ensuring that the threshold EC value for severe osmotic effects is not reached under field conditions.

Effects of salinity on fruit yield and quality of tomato grown in soil-less culture in greenhouses in Mediterranean climatic conditions

There is increasing pressure to reduce water use and environmental impact associated with open system, soil-less production in simple, plastic greenhouses on the Mediterranean coast. This may force the adoption of re-circulation of nutrient solutions. In south-eastern Spain, irrigation water is mostly from aquifers and has moderate levels of salinity. The adoption of re-circulation using moderately saline water requires detailed information of crop response to salinity, in order to optimise management. The effect of salinity on fruit yield, yield components and fruit quality of tomato grown in soil-less culture in plastic greenhouses in Mediterranean climate conditions was evaluated. Two spring growing periods (experiments 1 and 2) and one long season, autumn to spring growing period (experiment 3) studies were conducted. Two cultivars, ‘Daniela’ (experiment 1) and ‘Boludo’ (experiments 2 and 3), were used. Seven levels of electrical conductivity (EC) in the nutrient solution were compared in experiment 1 (2.5–8.0 dS m −1) and five levels in experiments 2 and 3 (2.5–8.5 dS m −1). Total and marketable yield decreased linearly with increasing salinity above a threshold EC value (EC t). There were only small effects of climate and cultivar on the EC t value for yield. Average threshold EC values for total and marketable fruit yield were, respectively, 3.2 and 3.3 dS m −1. The linear reductions of total and marketable yield with EC above EC t showed significant differences between experiments, the slope varying from 7.2% (autumn to spring period, ‘Boludo’) to 9.9% (spring period, ‘Boludo’) decreases per dS m −1 increase in EC for total yield, and from 8.1% (spring period, ‘Daniela’) to 11.8% (spring period, ‘Boludo’) for marketable yield. The decrease of fresh fruit yield with salinity was mostly due to a linear decrease of the fruit weight of 6.1% per dS m −1 from an EC t of 3.0 dS m −1 for marketable fruits. Reduction in fruit number with salinity made a smaller relative contribution to reduced yield. Blossom-end rot (BER) increased with increasing salinity. There was a higher incidence of BER with spring grown crops, and ‘Boludo’ was more sensitive than ‘Daniela’. Increasing salinity improved various aspects of fruit quality, such as: (i) proportion of ‘Extra’ fruits (high visual quality), (ii) soluble solids content, and (iii) titratable acidity content. However, salinity decreased fruit size, which is a major determinant of price. An economic analysis indicated that the EC threshold value above which the value of fruit production decreased linearly with increasing salinity was 3.3 dS m −1, which was the same as that for marketable yield. In the economic analysis, the value of increased visual fruit quality was offset by reduced yield and smaller fruit size.

Low electrical conductivity threshold and crystalline morphology of single-walled carbon nanotubes – high density polyethylene nanocomposites characterized by SEM, Raman spectroscopy and AFM

The electrical conductivities ( σ) of nanocomposites of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) and high density polyethylene (HDPE) have been studied for a large number of nanocomposites prepared in a SWCNT concentration range between 0.02 and 8 wt%. The values of σ obey a percolation power law with an SWCNT concentration threshold, p c = 0.13 wt%, the lowest yet obtained for any kind of carbon–polyethylene nanocomposites. Improved electrical conductivities attest to an effective dispersion of SWCNT in the polyethylene matrix, enabled by the fast quenching crystallization process used in the preparation of these nanocomposites. Characterization by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Raman spectroscopy consistently points to a uniform dispersion of separate small SWCNT bundles at concentrations near p c and increased nanotube clustering at higher concentrations. Near p c, high activation energies and geometries of long isolated rods suggest that electron transport occurs by activated electron hopping between nanotubes that are close to each other but still geometrically separate. The degree of SWCNT clustering given by Raman spectroscopy and the barrier energy for electrical conductivity are highly correlated. The nanotubes act as nucleants in the crystallization of the polyethylene matrix, and change the type of supermolecular aggregates from spherulites to axialitic-like objects. The size of crystal aggregates decreases with SWCNT loading, however, in reference to the unfilled polyethylene, the three-dimensional growth geometry extracted from the Avrami exponents remains unchanged up to 2 wt%. Consistency between SEM, Raman and electrical transport behavior suggests that the electrical conductivity is dominated by dispersion and the geometry of the SWCNT in the nanocomposites and not by changes or lack thereof in the HDPE semicrystalline structure.

Influence of the geometrical parameters on the conductivity percolation threshold

In our previous work we investigated numerically the influence of the steric properties of conducting particles in a non-conducting host matrix on the electrical conductivity threshold of the material, especially in regard to the shape and orientational order of the particles. In the present work we consider theoretically some additional geometrical aspects of the percolation problem. As regards the percolation threshold itself, we consider three aspects: the probability of inter-penetration of half-soft conducting particles for different penetration depths (penetration probability function), different kinds of inhomogeneous distribution of particles in non-conducting host, size effects, and the agglomeration of conducting particles. We also analyze the size of the conducting-particles' clusters below and above the percolation threshold and compare some characteristic critical exponents with the results in the literature.
