Abstract Free vibration analysis of laminated composite plates using the finite element method has been presented. A high-order quadratic isoparametric element has been employed in the analysis. Both the eight-node serendipity and the nine-node Lagrangian shape functions have been used and their performances have been compared. Various schemes for the generation of the mass matrix have been discussed and a comparative study of these schemes has been presented. The results from the present method have been compared with the closed form solutions and experimental observations of the previous investigators.
