Background: Even though most pregnant women might have some concerns regarding the mode of delivery some women may experience a heightened fear of childbirth (FOC), which may make pregnancy a disturbing and discomforting experience for them. Clinical FOC leads to an increase in C-section demands and the ratio of C-section births. Therefore, management of FOC is essential for improving public health. The objective of this pilot study was to evaluate the efficacy of group art therapy for the management of FOC.Methods: To understand the effectiveness of group art therapy, we designed a quantitative study. The population studied was pregnant women with subjective complaints of FOC attending an outpatient pregnancy follow-up clinic. Effectiveness of group art therapy intervention was assessed in comparison to group psychoeducation for FOC. The primary outcomes of the study were determined as Wijma Delivery Expectancy/Experience Questionnaire Version A (W-DEQ) scores below 37, Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) scores below 14 and the Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) scores below 10 at the end of the 6th session for the art therapy group. We expected to find significant differences in the primary outcome measures between the two groups. The secondary outcome of the study was the difference between the two groups regarding the mode of actual delivery. 30 women volunteers in the third trimester of pregnancy attending a public women's hospital with moderate levels of FOC were included in the study. They were randomly distributed to 2 groups. The first group (n = 15) received six sessions of group art therapy. The second group (n = 15) received six sessions of psychoeducation for FOC.Results: By the end of the six weeks, Beck depression scale (BDS) scores, Beck Anxiety Scale (BAS) scores, and W-DEQ scores decreased significantly in the art therapy group in comparison to the psychoeducation group (p < 0.001). FOC was considerably decreased in the art therapy group in relation to the control group at the end of the treatment. Most of the women (n = 12) in the art therapy group had natural deliveries while those in the psychoeducation group had C-sections (n = 10).Conclusions: Our findings suggest that art therapy is an efficient method for reducing clinical FOC and levels of anxiety and depressive symptoms in pregnant women in the final trimester. This arts therapy programme enabled these shifts in behaviour by helping women face and express their fears through their artwork (drawing) and then gain control over their fears (mandala-making, puppet-making, taking photographs and collage-making) within a secure base and an on-going social support system provided by the group structure. Group art therapy seems to be a cost-effective therapeutic approach for targeting a larger number of people in a limited time with a limited number of therapists.

Effectiveness of group art therapy on quality of life in paediatric patients with cancer: A randomized controlled trial

ObjectivesChildren with cancer undergoing chemotherapy experience many adverse effects. The effectiveness of painting- and handcrafting-based art therapy on the various dimensions of health-related quality of life in paediatric outpatients previously diagnosed with heterogeneity of malignancy was evaluated in the present study. DesignIn an experimental randomized controlled trial, a total of 60 children aged 7–13 years previously diagnosed with malignancy together with their parents were assigned randomly either to an experimental (30 patients) or a control group (30 patients) in 2017 in Iraq. The patients in the experimental group participated in painting and handcrafting group art therapy (creative art therapy) conducted by a professional fine artist for a one-month period. The dimensions of health-related quality of life in both study groups were measured through the KIDSCREEN-10 Index after project completion. ResultsThe patients in the experimental group were significantly more physically active and energetic (P < 0.001), were less depressed and emotional, and had fewer stressful feelings (P = 0.004). Moreover, they enjoyed their social and leisure time more and participated more in social activities (P = 0.003) in addition to an improvement in their relationships with other children (P = 0.043) and had better overall health status (P < 0.001). However, the children’s overall interaction with other children, parents, and healthcare providers (P = 0.074) and their perception of cognitive capacity for school performance (P = 0.257) were not significantly different between the two groups. ConclusionsThe findings of the study suggest that exposure to painting- and handcrafting-based art therapy improves the overall health-related quality of life in children with cancer.

집단미술치료가 시설 거주 조현병 환자의 자기효능감과 주관적 행복감에 미치는 효과

본 연구는 집단미술치료가 시설 거주 조현병 환자의 자기효능감과 주관적 행복감에 미치는 효과를 알아보기 위해 실증적 검증을 하였다. 본 연구의 대상자는 N 시에 위치한 정신요양시설에 거주하고 DSM-5의 진단 기준에 의해 정신과 전문의에게 조현병으로 진단을 받아 현재까지 약물을 복용하고 있는 환자로 본 프로그램을 이해하고 참여하기로 동의한 사람을 대상으로 하였다. 실험집단 5명, 통제집단 5명으로 구성하였으며 2017년 5월 30일부터 10월 12일까지 주 1회, 매회기 당 60분씩, 전체 16회기를 실험집단에 실시하였으며, 연구 도구는 자기효능감 척도와 주관적 행복감 척도를 사전･사후에 실시하였다. 연구의 효과검증을 위한 분석방법으로는 자기효능감과 주관적 행복감 변인의 사전･사후검사 차이를 검증하기 위해 SPSS/WIN 21.0을 이용하여 통계처 리 하였다. 본 연구의 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 자기효능감 검사에서 실험집단에 긍정적인 변화가 나타났으 며, 하위요인인 자신감, 자기조절, 과제난이도에서 총점의 평균점수가 상승하였다. 둘째, 주관적 행복감 검사에 서 실험집단에 성인 평균점수 이상의 긍정적인 변화가 나타났다. 본 연구는 집단미술치료가 시설 거주 조현병 환자의 자기효능감과 주관적 행복감에 긍정적인 효과가 있음을 보여줌으로써, 상담 및 심리치료 현장에서 다양하게 활용할 수 있는 실증적 근거를 제시하는데 의의가 있다.

집단미술치료가 청소년의 자기효능감에 미치는 영향

본 연구는 집단미술치료가 청소년의 자기효능감에 미치는 영향을 알아보는데 목적이 있다. 연구 대상은 J시 Y중학교 1학년 정서･행동특성검사(AMPQ-Ⅱ) 결과 관심군에 해당되고 Wee-Class에서 상담을 받은 학생들 중 10명을 대상으로 실험집단 5명, 통제집단 5명을 무선할당 하였다. 연구기간은 2015년 8월 31일부터 12월 7일까지 집단미술치료 프로그램을 12회기 실시하였다. 측정도구는 자기효능감 척도를 실시하여 반복측정분산분석(RM-ANOVA)을 하였고, 질적 검사로는 그림검사 KFD를 실시하여 질적 분석하였다. 연구결과는 첫째, 집단미술치료 프로그램은 청소년의 자기효능감에 긍정적인 효과가 있는 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 질적 분석의 KFD는 가족의 역동성과 상호작용을 알아보기 위한 도구로써 사전검사에서 가족 간의 단절된 소통을 표현했으나 사후검사는 한 곳을 바라보는 모습으로 가족구성원 및 외부와의 소통･접촉을 원하는 의지 력을 보였다. 따라서 집단미술치료 프로그램은 심리적 갈등을 겪고 있는 청소년의 자기효능감을 향상시킴으로써 가족에 대한 부정적 감정을 감소시키고 청소년기에 성취해야 할 과제를 능동적으로 수행하게 할 것으로 기대한다.

집단미술치료 프로그램이 다문화가정 아동의 자기표현과 자아존중감에 미치는 효과

본 연구의 목적은 집단미술치료 프로그램이 다문화가정 아동의 자기표현과 자아존중감에 미치는 효과성을 검증하는데 있다. 연구대상은 전남A시에 위치한 지역아동센터에 있는 다문화가정 아동 16명을 대상으로, 실험집단 8명과 통제집단 8명으로 배치하였다. 프로그램은 주 1회 60분으로 총 12회기의 집단미술치료프로그램을 실시하였다. 자료분석은 실험집 단과 통제집단의 사전 동질성을 검증하기 위해 독립표본 t 검증을 실시하였으며, 효과를 알아보기 위해 대응 표본 t 검증을 실시하였다. 분석결과, 이 연구에서는 자기표현 하위요인 중 말하는 내용에 유의미한 효과가 있었으며, 자아존중감에서도 유의미한 차이가 있었다. 따라서 집단미술치료 프로그램이 다문화가정 아동의 자기표현과 자아존중감 향상에 효과가 있었다.

The Effects of Group Art Therapy on Mothers of Children With Special Educational Needs

In this study we explored the effects of group art therapy on the emotional well-being and parental empathy of mothers of children with special educational needs. Eleven mothers of children who were diagnosed with at least 1 kind of special educational need participated in a 16-week program. We hypothesized that the art therapy group would help the mothers improve their emotional well-being and reduce parenting stress in comparison to a control group who received no intervention. The results from weekly ratings, interviews, and artwork supported the 2 hypotheses; however, the results from the questionnaire ratings did not support them. The possible reasons for the inconsistency in results and the limitations of the study are discussed.
