Interaction-induced dynamical PT -symmetry breaking in dissipative Fermi-Hubbard models

We investigate the dynamical properties of one-dimensional dissipative Fermi-Hubbard models, which are described by the Lindblad master equations with site-dependent jump operators. The corresponding non-Hermitian effective Hamiltonians with pure loss terms possess parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$) symmetry if we compensate the system additionally an overall gain term. By solving the two-site Lindblad equation with fixed dissipation exactly, we find that the dynamics of rescaled density matrix shows an instability as the interaction increases over a threshold, which can be equivalently described in the scheme of non-Hermitian effective Hamiltonians. This instability is also observed in multi-site systems and closely related to the $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry breaking accompanied by appearance of complex eigenvalues of the effective Hamiltonian. Moreover, we unveil that the dynamical instability of the anti-ferromagnetic Mott phase comes from the $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry breaking in highly excited bands, although the low-energy effective model of the non-Hermitian Hubbard model in the strongly interacting regime is always Hermitian. We also provide a quantitative estimation of the time for the observation of dynamical $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry breaking which could be probed in experiments.

Hybrid-Liouvillian formalism connecting exceptional points of non-Hermitian Hamiltonians and Liouvillians via postselection of quantum trajectories

Exceptional points (EPs) are degeneracies of classical and quantum open systems, which are studied in many areas of physics including optics, optoelectronics, plasmonics, and condensed matter physics. In the semiclassical regime, open systems can be described by phenomenological effective non-Hermitian Hamiltonians (NHHs) capturing the effects of gain and loss in terms of imaginary fields. The EPs that characterize the spectra of such Hamiltonians (HEPs) describe the time evolution of a system without quantum jumps. It is well known that a full quantum treatment describing more generic dynamics must crucially take into account such quantum jumps. In a recent paper [F. Minganti $et$ $al.$, Phys. Rev. A $\mathbf{100}$, $062131$ ($2019$)], we generalized the notion of EPs to the spectra of Liouvillian superoperators governing open system dynamics described by Lindblad master equations. Intriguingly, we found that in situations where a classical-to-quantum correspondence exists, the two types of dynamics can yield different EPs. In a recent experimental work [M. Naghiloo $et$ $al.$, Nat. Phys. $\mathbf{15}$, $1232$ ($2019$)], it was shown that one can engineer a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian in the quantum limit by postselecting on certain quantum jump trajectories. This raises an interesting question concerning the relation between Hamiltonian and Lindbladian EPs, and quantum trajectories. We discuss these connections by introducing a hybrid-Liouvillian superoperator, capable of describing the passage from an NHH (when one postselects only those trajectories without quantum jumps) to a true Liouvillian including quantum jumps (without postselection). Beyond its fundamental interest, our approach allows to intuitively relate the effects of postselection and finite-efficiency detectors.

Equivalence of Effective Non-Hermitian Hamiltonians in the Context of Open Quantum Systems and Strongly Correlated Electron Systems

Recently, it has become clear that non-Hermitian phenomena can be observed not only in open quantum systems experiencing gain and loss but also in equilibrium single-particle properties of strongly correlated systems. However, the circumstances and requirements for the emergence of non-Hermitian phenomena in each field are entirely different. While the implementation of postselection is a significant obstacle to observe the dynamics governed by a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian in open quantum systems, it is unnecessary in strongly correlated systems. Until now, a relation between both descriptions of non-Hermitian phenomena has not been revealed. In this Letter, we close this gap and demonstrate that the non-Hermitian Hamiltonians emerging in both fields are identical, and we clarify the conditions for the emergence of a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian in strongly correlated materials. Using this knowledge, we propose a method to analyze non-Hermitian properties without the necessity of postselection by studying specific response functions of open quantum systems and strongly correlated systems.

{mathcal{P}}{mathcal{T}}-Symmetric Effective Model for Nonequilibrium Phase Transitions in a Dissipative Fermionic Mott Insulator Chain

Nonequilibrium phase transitions in open dissipative systems can be described as instabilities in the spectra and wavefunctions of effective non-Hermitian Hamiltonians invariant under simultaneous parity (boldsymbol{mathcal{P}}) and time-reversal (boldsymbol{mathcal{T}}) transformations. The degree of non-Hermiticity reflects the strength of the external drive and dissipation, and the transition is described as a loss of the boldsymbol{mathcal{P}}boldsymbol{mathcal{T}} symmetry of the solutions corresponding to stationary low-drive dynamics. This approach has been successfully applied to spin, superconducting, and Mott insulator systems. However, the microscopic foundations for the employed phenomenological models are currently lacking. Here we propose a microscopic mechanism leading to the boldsymbol{mathcal{P}}boldsymbol{mathcal{T}}-symmetric effective model in the context of the nonequilibrium Mott transition in a dissipative Hubbard chain. Our model comprises a half-filled fermionic Hubbard chain subject to a constant electric field. The dissipation is introduced via the electron-phonon coupling. We obtain the explicit expressions for the non-Hermitian parameter in terms of the electron-phonon coupling strength and driving field. Analyzing the implications of microscopic model, we find a re-entrant Mott insulator with the increasing electric field for phonon density of states that increases slower than the square of the energy (such as in one or two dimensions), or varies non-monotonously with energy.

Solving the quantum master equation of coupled harmonic oscillators with Lie-algebra methods

Based on a Liouville-space formulation of open systems, we present two methods to solve the quantum dynamics of coupled harmonic oscillators experiencing Markovian loss. Starting point is the quantum master equation in Liouville space which is generated by a Liouvillian that induces a Lie algebra. We show how this Lie algebra allows to define ladder operators that construct Fock-like eigenstates of the Liouvillian. These eigenstates are used to decompose the time-evolved density matrix and, together with the accompanying eigenvalues, provide insight into the transport properties of the lossy system. Additionally, a Wei-Norman expansion of the generated time evolution can be found by a structure analysis of the algebra. This structure analysis yields a construction principle to implement effective non-Hermitian Hamiltonians in lossy systems.

Hilbert space partitioning for non-Hermitian Hamiltonians: From off-resonance to Zeno subspaces

Effective non-Hermitian Hamiltonians describing decaying systems are derived and analyzed in connection with the occurrence of possible Hilbert space partitioning, resulting in a confinement of the dynamics. In some cases, this fact can be interpreted properly as Zeno effect or Zeno dynamics, according to the dimension of the subspace one focuses on; in some other cases, the interpretation is more complicated and traceable back to a mix of Zeno phenomena and lack of resonance. Depending on the complex phases of the diagonal terms of the Hamiltonian, the system reacts in different ways, requiring larger moduli for the dynamical confinement to occur when the complex phase is close to π/2.

Relationship between exceptional points and the Kondo effect in f -electron materials

We study the impact of nonhermiticity due to strong correlations in f-electron materials. One of the most remarkable phenomena occurring in nonhermitian systems is the emergence of exceptional points at which the effective nonhermitian Hamiltonian becomes non-diagonalizable. We here demonstrate that Kondo temperature is related to the temperature at which exceptional points appear around the Fermi level. For this purpose, we study the periodic Anderson model with local and nonlocal hybridization in the insulating and metallic regimes. By analyzing the effective nonhermitian Hamiltonian, which describes the single-particle spectral function, and the temperature dependence of the screening of the magnetic moment, from which the Kondo temperature can be found, we show that exceptional points appear at the temperature at which the magnetic moment is screened. These results suggest that the well-known crossover between localized and itinerant f electrons in $f$-electron materials is related to the emergent exceptional points in the single-particle spectral function.

Quantum and semiclassical exceptional points of a linear system of coupled cavities with losses and gain within the Scully-Lamb laser theory

In the past few decades, many works have been devoted to the study of exceptional points (EPs), i.e., exotic degeneracies of non-Hermitian systems. The usual approach in those studies involves the introduction of a phenomenological effective non-Hermitian Hamiltonian (NHH), where the gain and losses are incorporated as the imaginary frequencies of fields and from which the Hamiltonian EPs (HEPs) are derived. Although this approach can provide valid equations of motion for the fields in the classical limit, its application in the derivation of EPs in the quantum regime is questionable. Recently, a framework [Minganti {\it et al.}, \href{https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevA.100.062131}{Phys. Rev. A {\bf 100}, 062131 (2019)}], which allows one to determine quantum EPs from a Liouvillian EP (LEP), rather than from an NHH, has been proposed. Compared to the NHHs, a Liouvillian naturally includes quantum noise effects via quantum-jump terms, thus allowing one to consistently determine its EPs purely in the quantum regime. In this work we study a non-Hermitian system consisting of coupled cavities with unbalanced gain and losses, where the gain is far from saturation, i.e, the system is assumed to be linear. We apply both formalisms, based on an NHH and a Liouvillian within the Scully-Lamb laser theory, to determine and compare the corresponding HEPs and LEPs in the semiclassical and quantum regimes. {Our results indicate that, although the overall spectral properties of the NHH and the corresponding Liouvillian for a given system can differ substantially, their LEPs and HEPs occur for the same combination of system parameters.}

Non-Hermitian Skin Effect and Chiral Damping in Open Quantum Systems.

One of the unique features of non-Hermitian Hamiltonians is the non-Hermitian skin effect, namely, that the eigenstates are exponentially localized at the boundary of the system. For open quantum systems, a short-time evolution can often be well described by the effective non-Hermitian Hamiltonians, while long-time dynamics calls for the Lindblad master equations, in which the Liouvillian superoperators generate time evolution. In this Letter, we find that Liouvillian superoperators can exhibit the non-Hermitian skin effect, and uncover its unexpected physical consequences. It is shown that the non-Hermitian skin effect dramatically shapes the long-time dynamics, such that the damping in a class of open quantum systems is algebraic under periodic boundary conditions but exponential under open boundary conditions. Moreover, the non-Hermitian skin effect and non-Bloch bands cause a chiral damping with a sharp wave front. These phenomena are beyond the effective non-Hermitian Hamiltonians; instead, they belong to the non-Hermitian physics of full-fledged open quantum dynamics.

Superradiance in finite quantum systems randomly coupled to continuum.

We study the effect of superradiance in open quantum systems, i.e., the separation of short- and long-living eigenstates when a certain subspace of states in the Hilbert space acquires an increasing decay width. We use several Hamiltonian forms of the initial closed system and generate their coupling to continuum by means of the random matrix theory. We average the results over a large number of statistical realizations of an effective non-Hermitian Hamiltonian and relate robust features of the superradiance process to the distribution of its exceptional points. We show that the superradiance effect is enhanced if the initial system is at the point of quantum criticality.

Three-state Landau-Zener model in the presence of dissipation

A population transfer based on adiabatic evolutions in a three-state system undergoing an avoided crossing is considered. The efficiency of the process is analyzed in connection with the relevant parameters, bringing to light an important role of the phases of the coupling constants. The role of dissipation is also taken into account, focusing on external decays that can be described by effective non-Hermitian Hamiltonians. Though the population transfer turns out to be quite sensitive to the decay processes, for very large decay rates the occurrence of a Zeno-phenomenon allows for restoring a very high efficiency.

Ultrasensitive, Parity–Time-Symmetric Wireless Reactive and Resistive Sensors

We propose a new readout paradigm for enhancing the performance of wireless resistive and reactive sensors. Here, we consider a passive resistor–inductor–capacitor sensor that is inductively coupled to an active reader, with the equivalent circuit of the whole telemetry system obeying the space-time reflection symmetry or the parity–time (PT) symmetry. As inspired by PT-symmetric quantum systems, this circuit has a non-Hermitian effective Hamiltonian that commutes with the antilinear, combined ${\mathcal {PT}}$ operator, where ${\mathcal {P}}$ and ${\mathcal {T}}$ are parity-inversion and time-reversal operators. We demonstrate that the PT-symmetric wireless sensor system, when compared to conventional interrogation techniques using a passive coil antenna, may provide significantly improved quality factor ( ${Q}$ -factor), sensing resolution, and sensitivity in response to the sensor’s reactance or resistance variation. Our results may have an impact on various wireless sensing, detection, and imaging systems, particularly for emerging micromachined sensors, miniature implants, wearables, and Internet-of-Things applications.

Few-photon scattering and emission from low-dimensional quantum systems

We show how to use the input-output formalism compute the propagator for an open quantum system, i.e. quantum networks with a low dimensional quantum system coupled to one or more loss channels. The total propagator is expressed entirely in terms of the Green's functions of the low dimensional quantum system, and it is shown that these Green's functions can be computed entirely from the evolution of the low-dimensional system with an effective non-hermitian Hamiltonian. Our formalism generalizes the previous works that have focused on time independent Hamiltonians to systems with time dependent Hamiltonians, making it a suitable computational tool for the analysis of a number of experimentally interesting quantum systems. We illustrate our formalism by applying it to analyze photon emission and scattering from driven and undriven two-level system and three- level lambda system.

Fundamental limits and non-reciprocal approaches in non-Hermitian quantum sensing

Unconventional properties of non-Hermitian systems, such as the existence of exceptional points, have recently been suggested as a resource for sensing. The impact of noise and utility in quantum regimes however remains unclear. In this work, we analyze the parametric-sensing properties of linear coupled-mode systems that are described by effective non-Hermitian Hamiltonians. Our analysis fully accounts for noise effects in both classical and quantum regimes, and also fully treats a realistic and optimal measurement protocol based on coherent driving and homodyne detection. Focusing on two-mode devices, we derive fundamental bounds on the signal power and signal-to-noise ratio for any such sensor. We use these to demonstrate that enhanced signal power requires gain, but not necessarily any proximity to an exceptional point. Further, when noise is included, we show that nonreciprocity is a powerful resource for sensing: it allows one to exceed the fundamental bounds constraining any conventional, reciprocal sensor.

Anomalous dynamics in multilevel quantum decay

A metastable quantum state coupled to a continuum undergoes an exponential decay in the Weisskopf-Wigner (Markovian) approximation. However, quantum theory strictly predicts deviations from an exponential decay law both at small and long time scales. In multilevel systems, even in the Markovian approximation strong deviations from an exponential decay can be observed in the intermediate time scale owing to interference of overlapping resonances. Such interference effects are simply described by an effective non-Hermitian Hamiltonian and are known to explain, for example, the existence of dark states and fractional decay. Here we show that the wide variety of anomalous behaviors observed in multilevel quantum decay are rooted in the non-normal nature of the effective non-Hermitian Hamiltonian, revealing strong similarities between anomalous quantum mechanical decay and non-normal dynamics found in hydrodynamic flows. Major signatures of non-normal dynamics include delayed decay, accelerated decay, and exponential-power-law decay at an exceptional point. Such signatures are exemplified by suggesting simple tight-binding lattice realizations of multilevel quantum decay, which could be emulated in integrated photonic experiments. Finally, it is shown that for noninteracting particles with fermionic statistics the usual exponential decay law is restored, i.e., all anomalous decay effects arising from single-particle non-normal dynamics are washed out.

Topological photonic states in one-dimensional dimerized ultracold atomic chains

We study the topological optical states in one-dimensional (1D) dimerized ultracold atomic chains, as an extension of the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model. By taking the fully retarded near-field and far-field dipole-dipole interactions into account, we describe the system by an effective non-Hermitian Hamiltonian, vastly different from the Hermitian Hamiltonian of the conventional SSH model. We analytically calculate the complex bandstructures for infinitely long chains, and show that the topological invariant, i.e., the complex Zak phase, is still quantized and becomes nontrivial when the dimerization parameter $\beta>0.5$, despite the broken chiral symmetry and non-Hermiticity. We have verified the validity of the bulk-boundary correspondence for this non-Hermitian system by further analyzing the eigenstate distributions along with their inverse participation ratios (IPRs) for finite chains, where topologically protected edge states are unambiguously identified. We also reveal that such topological edge states are robust under symmetry-breaking disorders. For transverse eigenstates, we further discover the increase of localization length of topological edge states with the increase of lattice period due to the presence of strong far-field dipole-dipole interactions. Moreover, the ultra-strong scattering cross section and ultra-narrow linewidth of a single cold atom allow us to observe in more detail about topological states than in conventional systems, such as the frequency shift with respect to the single-atom resonance and the largely tunable bandgap. We envisage these topological photonic states can provide an efficient interface between light and matter.

Full-Counting Many-Particle Dynamics: Nonlocal and Chiral Propagation of Correlations.

The ability to measure single quanta allows the complete characterization of small quantum systems known as full-counting statistics. Quantum gas microscopy enables one to observe many-body systems at the single-atom precision. We extend the idea of full-counting statistics to nonequilibrium open many-particle dynamics and apply it to discuss the quench dynamics. By way of illustration, we consider an exactly solvable model to demonstrate the emergence of unique phenomena such as nonlocal and chiral propagation of correlations, leading to a concomitant oscillatory entanglement growth. We find that correlations can propagate beyond the conventional maximal speed, known as the Lieb-Robinson bound, at the cost of probabilistic nature of quantum measurement. These features become most prominent at the real-to-complex spectrum transition point of an underlying parity-time-symmetric effective non-Hermitian Hamiltonian. A possible experimental situation with quantum gas microscopy is discussed.

Photon scattering by an atomic ensemble coupled to a one-dimensional nanophotonic waveguide

We theoretically investigate the quantum scattering of a single-photon pulse interacting with an ensemble of $\Lambda$-type three-level atoms coupled to a one-dimensional waveguide. With an effective non-Hermitian Hamiltonian, we study the collective interaction between the atoms mediated by the waveguide mode. In our scheme, the atoms are randomly placed in the lattice along the axis of the one-dimensional waveguide, which closely corresponds to the practical condition that the atomic positions can not be controlled precisely in experiment. Many interesting optical properties occur in our waveguide-atom system, such as electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) and optical depth. Moreover, we observe that strong photon-photon correlation with quantum beats can be generated in the off-resonant case, which provides an effective candidate for producing non-classical light in experiment. With remarkable progress in waveguide-emitter system, our scheme may be feasible in the near future.

The arrow of time in open quantum systems and dynamical breaking of the resonance–anti-resonance symmetry

Open quantum systems are often represented by non-Hermitian effective Hamiltonians that have complex eigenvalues associated with resonances. In previous work we showed that the evolution of tight-binding open systems can be represented by an explicitly time-reversal symmetric expansion involving all the discrete eigenstates of the effective Hamiltonian. These eigenstates include complex-conjugate pairs of resonant and anti-resonant states. An initially time-reversal-symmetric state contains equal contributions from the resonant and anti-resonant states. Here we show that as the state evolves in time, the symmetry between the resonant and anti-resonant states is automatically broken, with resonant states becoming dominant for and anti-resonant states becoming dominant for . Further, we show that there is a time-scale for this symmetry-breaking, which we associate with the ‘Zeno time’. We also compare the time-reversal symmetric expansion with an asymmetric expansion used previously by several researchers. We show how the present time-reversal symmetric expansion bypasses the non-Hilbert nature of the resonant and anti-resonant states, which previously introduced exponential divergences into the asymmetric expansion.

Nonlocal discrete continuity and invariant currents in locally symmetric effective Schrödinger arrays

We develop a formalism relating nonlocal current continuity to spatial symmetries of subparts in discrete Schrödinger systems. Breaking of such local symmetries hereby generates sources or sinks for the associated nonlocal currents. The framework is applied to locally inversion-(time-) and translation-(time-) symmetric one-dimensional photonic waveguide arrays with Hermitian or non-Hermitian effective tight-binding Hamiltonians. For stationary states the nonlocal currents become translationally invariant within symmetric domains, exposing different types of local symmetry. They are further employed to derive a mapping between wave amplitudes of symmetry-related sites, generalizing also the global Bloch and parity mapping to local symmetry in discrete systems. In scattering setups, perfectly transmitting states are characterized by aligned invariant currents in attached symmetry domains, whose vanishing signifies a correspondingly symmetric density. For periodically driven arrays, the invariance of the nonlocal currents is retained on period average for quasi-energy eigenstates. The proposed theory of symmetry-induced continuity and local invariants may contribute to the understanding of wave structure and response in systems with localized spatial order.
