Integration of soft skills into the program of maritime English

The shipping industry is regulated by international laws with the stakeholders significantly influencing the standards of international transport systems and, therefore, demands highly qualified specialists. The introduction of digital technologies, automatization of working processes, and globalization of international maritime trade create new challenges and increase the requirements for the mariners’ professional competences, thus impacting the training of future specialists. The latest studies on the current trends and the long-term prospects indicate the need to acquire new professional skills to support the shipping industry’s sustainable development. The stakeholders are increasingly recognizing the influence of human factors on the efficiency of the processes aboard ships and emphasize the urgent need for an overhaul of maritime education. The focus on the soft skills training aims to contribute to the formation of future leaders and improve the quality of seafarers’ professional training. Thus, there is a need to substantiate the importance of soft skills for a successful career in the maritime industry and to describe the methods to integrate them into the educational process. The authors acknowledge that the concept of “soft skills” proposed by national and foreign researchers varies in their characteristics. Based on the analysis of scholarly papers, we have formulated the “soft skills” definition appropriate for our research. We define “soft skills” as individual psychological and behavioral properties that are realized in interpersonal interaction and contribute significantly to its effectiveness.The purpose of the article is to present some approaches to integrating soft skills into Maritime English program at a higher educational institution.To determine the primary directions of soft skills development, the authors have analyzed the latest international projects, conducted by maritime experts. We consider the integration of soft skills into the Maritime English course to be one of the most suitable approaches since the teaching methods and the course learning materials are aimed specifically at the development of effective interpersonal communication skills.The information presented in the paper can be useful for researchers and educators, who are interested in soft skills embedding into educational programs.

Membangun Koneksi Individu: Strategi Berbahasa Indonesia Sebagai Alat Penting Komunikasi Interpersonal di Tempat Kerja

This study aims to examine the use of Indonesian as a tool to improve the effectiveness of interpersonal communication in the workplace, strengthen work relationships, and create a collaborative work environment. The method used is qualitative with data collection techniques, namely interviews. Data analysis is carried out qualitatively consisting of data reduction, data presentation, and conclusions. The results of the analysis show that good and appropriate use of Indonesian in the workplace is very important to maintain a level of professionalism, by paying attention to PUEBI guidelines and language structure, and avoiding the use of double, ambiguous words, or terminology unfamiliar to the interlocutor. The way a person speaks reflects their identity and culture. Interpersonal communication plays an important role in the work environment, affecting productivity and relationships between individuals. Improving interpersonal communication in the office environment involves a variety of strategies, from consistency in language adjustment to participating in activities outside of work hours and maintaining a positive attitude and openness to the opinions of others. Thus, effective interpersonal communication is not only the key to success in the workplace, but also supports the growth and development of both individuals and the organization

Enhancing perspective-taking and empathy in children with autism spectrum disorder through asymmetric VR games and peer collaboration

ABSTRACT Children with ASD experience pervasive social cognitive impairments, primarily manifested as challenges in social communication and reciprocal social behavior. These inherent deficits indirectly affect the development, based on the Theory of Mind, and empathy capacity in children with ASD, which are crucial in developing social skills and communicative interaction abilities. Research suggests that children with ASD struggle to judge and interpret the intentions, behaviors, and metaphors involved in social interaction. This impacts their abilities to engage in effective interpersonal communication and social interaction. Therefore, the present study developed a tool called Share VR. This asymmetric VR technology combines peer collaboration and cooperative games to hone the empathetic abilities in children with ASD. The objective is to stimulate the application of their abilities while enhancing their understanding of others’ behavioral intentions. In the experimental verification phase, the study recruited five children with ASD and three typically developing children to participate in Asymmetric VR multiplayer games. The games involved cooperation, competition, and exploration across three different game levels. Further, we used a three-stage experimental validation using a multiple-baseline across subjects design to confirm whether this method effectively enables children with ASD to acquire empathy through peer collaboration, game participation, and cooperative assistance.

CREATIVE THINKING AS AN ELEMENT OF SOFT􀍳SKILLS OF SPECIALISTS IN THE SOCIO􀍳CULTURAL AND ART FIELDS

In the article, the author considers the problem of the formation of soft skills of specialists in the socio-cultural and artistic fields. Modern requirements for higher education, changes in information technologies and the increase in the availability of information, together with changes in social life, which require the presence of a wide range of knowledge and competences in modern specialists, as well as the ability to quickly adapt to changing conditions, require modern institutions of higher education of education, ensuring a high-quality educational process, with its focus on the combination of traditions and innovations in education and the formation of a high-quality specialist for the modern labor market. For professional implementation, development and success in personal and social life, a modern specialist in the socio-cultural and artistic fields must be able to quickly adapt to changing conditions, make balanced and informed decisions in conditions of uncertainty and lack of information, establish effective interpersonal communications with colleagues, management,, representatives of authorities, the scientific community, the public, resolve conflict situations, show empathy, organize one’s own life, professional activity and development in the existing conditions, leadership qualities and the ability to take responsibility, etc. The author proves that today precisely such qualities and skills, which are united by the concept of soft skills, along with other equal conditions (in particular, the same level of professionalism, professional qualification) determine the success of a specialist in the labor market, and an individual in life. The question of the formation of soft skills during the acquisition of higher education by students has become relevant in the last few decades. However, considering the experience and trends in the development of higher education in our country in the last few years, the importance of these issues is constantly increasing. High-quality training of students of art and pedagogical education in modern conditions must necessarily involve the formation of soft skills in them through the use in the educational process of a wide range of innovative pedagogical technologies, modern interactive teaching methods and the involvement of students in various social, public, communication activities based on understanding of the essence, meaning and methods of soft skills formation by all representatives of the educational process. A salient determinant of effective interpersonal communication resides in the cultivation of a positive personal image. The intricate interplay between self-image, individual behaviors, and communication abilities highlights the far-reaching influence of personal perception on social interactions. In the contemporary landscape of Chinese television series, exemplified by the production ‘Nothing but Thirty’, a deliberate effort is made to depict characters that embody the evolving roles of women in modern society. Drawing from relevant literature, this study conducts a comprehensive analysis of characters’ image in ‘Nothing but Thirty’, examining content such as appearance, language, non-verbal cues (body language), and varied scene settings. Adopting a rigorous qualitative case study methodology and leveraging content analysis grounded in the coordinated management of meaning theory and social exchange theory, the research aims to dissect the nuanced dynamics of interpersonal communication as portrayed in the series. The findings illuminate that the dynamic characterizations in contemporary Chinese TV series function as reflective mirrors, capturing the intricate layers of modern interpersonal communication and societal intricacies. Enhancing Work Performance: The Role of Communication and Leadership Styles

Effective communication styles are essential to encourage understanding of expectations, effective workforce management, and organisational growth to stimulate employee work performance. This study explores the complex relationships between leadership styles, work performance, and communication styles. Employee commitment is found to have implications for organisational commitment aspects like responsibility, loyalty, and trust. Effective interpersonal and leadership communication encompasses relationships beyond and within the workplace. This study uses a questionnaire-based survey to investigate how leadership styles mediate the relationship between the factors of communication styles and job performance in Malaysian organisations. The perceptions of communication style, the mediating effect of leadership styles, and the relationship between communication style and job performance are investigated using quantitative data analysis using descriptive, inferential, and correlation tests to perform mediation analysis. The findings indicate the need for communication-focused training and engagement programmes and the significance of assertive communication styles for improved work performance. The study also establishes the critical need for leaders to comprehend the needs, motivations, and efficiency drivers of each team member. The study offers directions for future research, including larger geographic coverage, more communication variables, mixed-method techniques, and the investigation of other indirect effects. The study's conclusions give leaders practical advice on how to improve organisational communication for improved work performance and encourage employee trust and commitment. A Qualitative Analysis of Urbanization and Menstrual Health Among Young Women.

This qualitative study, grounded in theory, employed inductive coding for analysis, focusing on menstrual health among urban women aged 10-25. The research aims to explore the menstrual health status, practices, and beliefs of participants. The research delves into the impact of recent government initiatives on menstrual health and assesses the role of urbanization in shaping evolving menstrual health practices among young girls. Employing in-depth qualitative methods such as interviews and focus group discussions, the study seeks a comprehensive understanding of participants' experiences and perceptions related to menstrual health. The dynamics of women's menstrual experiences are significantly influenced by urbanization, heightened exposure to social media, evolving lifestyles, and government initiatives like the distribution of menstrual products in schools and the enhancement of water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) facilities in government institutions. Positive shifts have been observed, including reduced restrictions on menstruating individuals, enhanced access to affordable hygiene products, and improved disposal facilitated by municipal garbage collection services. However, notable gaps persist in basic knowledge about menstruation, hygienic practices, effective interpersonal communication with schoolteachers or community health care workers, and compliance with government programs promoting weekly iron-folic acid supplementation and biannual Albendazole intake, calling for substantial improvement.

Cultural sensitivity and associated factors among nurses in southwest Ethiopia: a cross-sectional study

BackgroundBecause of the rapidly rising cultural diversity, the ability to recognize cultural diversity is extremely important to all healthcare professionals, especially to nurses. However, there is a paucity of information regarding the cultural sensitivity of nurses in Ethiopia. Hence, this study aimed to assess cultural sensitivity and associated factors among nurses working at Jimma Medical Center, Oromia Regional State, Southwest Ethiopia.MethodsHealth-facility-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 244 nurses selected by simple random sampling from May 20th to June 20th, 2020. A structured, self-administered questionnaire was used to collect data. Data were analysed using Statistical Product and Service Solution Version 26.0. Bivariate binary logistic regression analyses were used to select variables for the final model. Multivariable binary logistic regression analysis was used to identify factors associated with cultural sensitivity. Statistical significance was declared at \\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \\usepackage{amsmath} \\usepackage{wasysym} \\usepackage{amsfonts} \\usepackage{amssymb} \\usepackage{amsbsy} \\usepackage{mathrsfs} \\usepackage{upgreek} \\setlength{\\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \\begin{document}$$p\\leq$$\\end{document}0.05, and adjusted odds ratio with respective 95% CI was used to report significant covariates.ResultsOut of the total sample, 236 nurses participated in this study, giving a response rate of 96.72%. Nurses who were culturally sensitive while delivering routine nursing services were found to be 40.3% (95% CI (34.3, 46.6)). Level of education ([AOR (95% CI)], [4.846 (1.188, 19.773)]), interpersonal communication ([AOR (95% CI)], [4.749 (1.334, 16.909)]), and intercultural communication ([AOR (95% CI)], [51.874 (13.768, 195.45)]) were positively and significantly associated with the cultural sensitivity of nurses.ConclusionCultural sensitivity is found to be low in the study area. Increasing level of education, effective interpersonal communication abilities, and intercultural communication abilities positively predict cultural sensitivity of nurses. It is helpful for nurses to improve their knowledge of transcultural nursing theories and cultural understanding.

Certainty Stance Adverbs in Chinese Linguistic Academic Writing: A Corpus-based Study

This study delves into the intricate usage of certainty stance adverbs in the academic writings of the Chinese. The object of this study is to conduct a contrastive analysis of certainty stance adverbs between Chinese linguistic MA novices and linguistic experts. The subject of this study is to explore the similarities and differences in the use of these adverbs within the academic discourse of the two groups mentioned. In addressing these disparities, the study seeks to analyze them from the perspective of interlanguage and interpersonal function, with the ultimate goal of enhancing the production of high-quality academic papers by the Chinese. The study employs two key methods: the contrastive analysis method and the corpus-based method. The novelty of the study lies in its contrastive examination of certainty stance adverbs between Chinese linguistic MA novices and experts. Through an in-depth analysis of theoretical frameworks and linguistic data extracted from the MA theses of Chinese linguistic novices and research articles of linguistic experts, the study underscores the importance of considering the similarities and differences in the use of certainty stance adverbs within the realm of second language acquisition and pragmatic studies. This consideration aims to refine learners’ syntactical and pragmatic command of certainty stance adverbs to align with expert academic discourse, ultimately fostering effective interpersonal communication in academic writing. The findings of this research offer valuable insights into the specific linguistic challenges encountered by the Chinese, thereby laying a solid groundwork for the development of targeted pedagogical strategies to bolster their academic writing skills.

Supporting and Inhibiting Factors of Agricultural Extension Interpersonal Communication Competence in Enrekang Regency

Agricultural extension workers play an essential role in increasing shallot yields. They provide technical counseling, transfer knowledge and skills, and are involved in post-harvest monitoring, mentoring, and counseling. In addition, they also provide information about business development and marketing. Agricultural extension interpersonal communication competence plays a crucial role in efforts to increase shallot yields in Enrekang. With these competencies, agricultural extension agents can establish good relationships with farmers, understand their needs, and communicate effectively to transfer relevant knowledge and skills. Through effective interpersonal communication, agricultural extension workers can assist farmers in implementing proper cultivation practices, overcoming obstacles, providing motivation, and building collaboration between farmers and related parties. This article uses a qualitative descriptive methodology. The result showed that the agricultural extension interpersonal communication competence is outstanding and has a positive value for farmers in Enrekang Regency. Some farmers are still reluctant and indifferent to following directions from extension agents because they consider themselves quite experienced in farming.

The Role of Interpersonal Communication in Enhancing Teamwork Effectiveness in the Digital Era

This study explores the role of interpersonal communication in enhancing team work effectiveness in the digital era, focusing on how effective communication practices can strengthen mutual understanding, coordination, and collaboration within teams. Utilizing a qualitative method and literature review, this research collected and analyzed data from various contemporary sources to comprehend the dynamics of interpersonal communication within the context of technology-supported team work. The findings indicate that interpersonal communication characterized by openness, empathy, and support not only strengthens relationships among team members and builds trust but also reduces misunderstandings and conflicts. Furthermore, the study highlights the importance of training in interpersonal communication skills to bolster team cooperation and expedite the collaboration process by leveraging appropriate digital communication tools. These findings underscore the significance of effective interpersonal communication strategies and the integration of digital communication technology to create a productive and harmonious work environment, as well as to improve job satisfaction, motivation, and employee retention in the digital era.

The Relationship Between Interpersonal Communication In The Family And Social Attitudes Of Adolescents In Rawang Village, Pariaman City

The low social attitudes of teenagers in Rawang village are the background for this research. The lack of effective interpersonal communication in the family makes this happen. The objectives of this study are: 1) describe interpersonal communication in the family in rawang village, Pariaman City; 2) describe social attitudes in rawang village, Pariaman City; 3) see the relationship between interpersonal communication in the family with the social attitudes of adolescents in rawang village. The research approach with quantitative with correlational research type. The study population was adolescents in the village of rawang, Pariaman city which amounted to 30 people by making the research sample using stratified proportional random sampling technique. Data collection techniques using a list of questions (questionnaire) data analysis techniques using the percentage formula and product moment. The results of the study include: 1) interpersonal communication in the family in adolescents is categorized as less effective: 2) the social attitudes of adolescents in Rawang village are categorized as low; 3) there is a significant relationship between interpersonal communication in the family with the social attitudes of adolescents in Rawang village, Pariaman City. The research suggestions are 1) for parents to be able to foster the quality of interpersonal communication in the family. communication provided by parents in a family that produces a harmonious relationship; 2) for family empowerment institutions to improve the ability of parents to carry out interpersonal communication.3) Future researchers are expected to observe other variables that are related to social attitudes.Keywords: Interpersonal Communication, Adolescent Social Attitude

Komunikasi Interpersonal Perawat Pada Pasien Penyandang Disabilitas Mental di Sentra Phala Martha Sukabumi

This interpersonal communication plays an important role in the daily interactions between nurses and their patients. The role of the nurse is very influential on the conditions of those with mental disabilities who are being rehabilitated. The most effective interpersonal communication used by nurses in approaching patients with mental disabilities at the Phala Martha Sukabumi Center. This research is to find out the nurse's interpersonal communication between patients with mental disabilities at the Phala Martha Sukabumi Center. This research found that at the stage of social penetration theory is an effective exchange of various information exchanges as well as in Social Penetration activities. This primary data was obtained from observation, interviews, and documentation. This research method uses a qualitative research method that examines the condition of an object. The results showed that the Interpersonal Communication of Nurses in patients with Mental Disabilities at the Phala Martha Sukabumi Center established good communication relationships. Communication between nurses and patients with mental disabilities is an interpersonal approach. With this stage of the nurse's approach to building a relationship of mutual trust is one of opening patients to be open to nurses, and a supportive attitude by providing positive encouragement for patients who are relapsed during rehabilitation.

Komunikasi Interpersonal antara Bidan dan Ibu Hamil di Puskesmas Biak Kota Provinsi Papua

Interpersonal communication has an important role in creating good relationships between individuals. Interpersonal communication is used in the medical situation so that someone can talk openly about the conditions and problems they are experiencing. The aim of this research is to find out how interpersonal communication is between midwives and pregnant women at the Biak City Health Center, Papua Province. The method used is descriptive qualitative. The researcher conducted observations at the Biak City Community Health Center when pregnant women underwent pregnancy checks which was handled by midwives and interviews were conducted with 5 informants to complete the data. The 5 informants in this study consisted of 3 pregnant women and 2 midwives. The results of this study show that effective interpersonal communication between midwives and pregnant women is showed by the attitudes such as: (1) openness which makes the information conveyed well absorbed, (2) empathy which makes the midwife better understand the condition of pregnant women, (3) ) positiveness in which midwives always greet pregnant women in a friendly manner to create a comfortable atmosphere, (4) support is given to pregnant women by maintaining the emotional stability of pregnant women, and (5) equality where midwives always prioritize the rights of pregnant women as their patients

Interpersonal patient-therapeutic team communication during COVID-19 pandemic – selected problems

Introduction. Interpersonal communication is an important element of effective cooperationbetween a patient and therapeutic team. Patients ill with COVID-19 during the pandemicespecially needed a direct contact with medical staff. Introduction of modern technologiesduring COVID-19 pandemic enabled interpersonal communication between a patient andtherapeutic team.Objective: The aim of the study was presentation of the selected elements of interpersonalcommunication in the work of a nurse between a patient and therapeutic team during COVID-19 pandemic.Material and Methods. The problem of interpersonal communication between a patient andtherapeutic team during COVID-19 pandemic was analyzed based on the results of scientificstudies and perceptual experiences.Results. COVID-19 pandemic was a new challenge for therapeutic teams in patient care intreatment facilities, to provide an effective interpersonal communication. In order to improvethe quality of interpersonal communication alternative forms of communication with patientswere applied. During the COVID-19 pandemic social media played a special role in primaryhealth care. Efforts undertaken by medical staff also had to be focused on safe environment ofcare and safe work conditions.Conclusions. Interpersonal communication between a patient and therapeutic team should beimproved during the pandemic considering the provision of a high quality services for patientsin a state of threat to health and life. An improvement of the effectiveness of interpersonalcommunication is conditioned by the implementation of alternative forms of communicationwith a patient, efficient functioning of social media, provision of safe environment of patientcare and safe work conditions for medical staff.

Behavioral Health Services Outcomes That Matter Most to Caregivers of Children, Youth, and Young Adults with Mental Health Needs.

This project documents the service outcomes that caregivers value most. A diverse group of caregivers, representing six regions of the United States, participated in two rounds of virtual one-hour focus groups. In round 1, participants identified what they hoped to gain from using behavioral health services for themselves, their families, and their child and discussed what made services a positive experience for them. They then reported their top-three most-hoped-for outcomes. In round 2, groups validated and refined summary findings from round 1. Caregivers prioritized service quality outcomes, primarily. They expressed a desire for an accessible, respectful, and supportive treatment environment, underpinned by well-trained and culturally responsive professionals. Caregivers also desire seamless cross-sector provider collaboration and care transitions, which integrate the insights and preferences of families and children themselves to craft a customized care plan. Priority outcomes not related to service quality included hoping to gain increased knowledge, resources, and tools and techniques to support the mental health needs of their children, to see their children improve their daily functioning and for their child develop more effective interpersonal communication skills. Caregivers also reported hoping to experience less stigma related to the mental health needs of their children and to achieve personal fulfillment for themselves and their children. Research, policies, and mental health services should prioritize and be designed to address the outcomes that matter to youth and families.

The role of interpersonal communication can also occur in a family environment, involving communication relationships between children and parents. Children need interaction with others for their growth. Despite the importance of interpersonal communication to parents and children, many parents face the challenge of establishing effective communication with their children. Factors such as generational differences, good communication styles, and pressure from the environment can be obstacles in creating a healthy communication relationship between parents and children. In this study, interpersonal communication between parents and children on shaping the character of their children in Tangerang. Using qualitative research methods, this study explores communication interactions through observation and questioning deliberate participation, incorporating symbolic theory. The results of this study are that effective interpersonal communication can help parents understand the needs and feelings of their children. A parent who understands the needs and feelings of the child will be able to provide appropriate guidance and guidance to the child.

A part or department within a company called the marketing division is responsible for managing all aspects related to the marketing of the company's products or services. The marketing division also plays a crucial role in the development of a company, so it must perform well. Ability to communicate effectively and well is crucial for smooth interactions and activities, especially in formal settings. Because of this, the purpose of this study is to understand the interpersonal communication relationships inside PT Hamri Indonesia's marketing division. Additionally, it looks into how much interpersonal communication might help staff members in PT Hamri Indonesia's marketing division work better. Furthermore, the study attempts to pinpoint obstacles that PT Hamri Indonesia's marketing division faces in relation to interpersonal communication. Primary data for this study came from observations and interviews, and data analysis in this study is qualitative. The sources of secondary data include definitions, theories, and a variety of literary works. The importance of encouraging effective interpersonal communication among persons is indicated by the conclusion reached from the impact of interpersonal communication on the performance of marketing division employees.

THE ROLE OF PROSODY IN THE REALIZATION OF TENOR IN ENGLISH DIALOGUE DISCOURSE

The paper reports on a study of the communicative category “tenor" and its prosodic realization in English dialogue discourse. Personal tenor conveys the information about the character of participants’ relationships, emerging in the process of speech interaction, as well as socio-cultural norms accepted within a particular linguoculture. Drawing on the findings made in the course of the analysis (pragmatic, auditory and acoustic) of the samples of British dialogue discourse, the authors demonstrate how prosody contributes to the formation of tenor. The paper contains an overview of the prosodic markers of friendly and unfriendly tenors. The ability of prosodic means to reflect subtle attitudinal meanings which unfold in the dynamics of discourse determines their significant role in the formation of personal tenor. The study of discourse tenor contributes to establishing the influence of extralinguistic factors (belonging both to the situation-at-hand and the sociocultural context) on the prosodic realization of speech and contributes to a fuller understanding of the situational variation of prosodic means. Addressing this problem is relevant for effective interpersonal and cross-cultural communication in English.
