White partisans’ reactions to real politicians’ tweets framing white supremacy and radical Islam as terrorist threats

ABSTRACT In recent decades, the discussion of terrorist threat in the United States has focused almost exclusively on radical Islam. Now, progressive politicians increasingly talk about white supremacy as a form of terrorism. We explore reactions to this new rhetoric using two survey experiments, in which non-Hispanic white respondents are exposed to real tweets of Democratic and Republican politicians discussing white supremacy and radical Islam as security threats. We formulate two alternative expectations: after seeing messages from Democratic politicians linking white supremacy to terrorism, whites may either diverge in their assessments of Republicans’ anti-Muslim appeals depending on their own partisanship or they may uniformly rate anti-Muslim rhetoric as more acceptable. Both experiments show significant increases in the perceived acceptability of anti-Muslim appeals when they are presented after messages about white supremacy, and these results are driven by white Democrats. Our results highlight the potential side effects of political communication about terrorism.

Russia’s Fight against the Savage Punishments in the Emirate of Bukhara (Communicative Aspects)

The article analyzes the instruments of political communication used by Russian authorities and other groups of interests in the fight for the abolition of the most severe punishments in the Emirate of Bukhara as an element of its political-legal and social-economic modernization. On a base of legal acts, notes of contemporaries and periodicals of the end of the 19th – beginning of the 20th centuries the author analyzes using of different communication tools, groups of interests which used them, effectiveness of communicative means. In particular, diplomatic demarches of imperial diplomats and “own example” of the Russian settlements on the territory of the Emirate of Bukhara are examined as well as direct political consultations of frontier Russian administration (of the Turkestan Governor-Generalship) with Bukharan emirs and high officials and campaign in periodical at the beginning of the 20th century launched by Russian business circles and political parties. The study clarifies the reasons why the goal was not reached despite the active position of Russian actors: some instruments could be effective in relations with Western states but were not relevant in case of the Central Asian country, besides that, the conflicts between Russian authorities (Military Ministry form one side and Ministry of Foreign Affairs from another) on the “Bukharan question” graded effect of political communication executed by regional authorities and Russian actors immediately in the Emirate.

The Role of Political Communication in the Fight against COVID-19 at Vietnam

COVID-19 pandemic has brought serious detriments of many aspects worldwide. Negative impacts on the economy, social life, and humanity are critical, and history will still refer to this period as a dark picture of all humanity. The complicated and unpredictable changes of the epidemic forced all countries to find ways and use all resources to respond. However, along with new strains, the evolution of the disease is becoming more and more sophisticated. A complete end to this epidemic may not be possible. Therefore, people worldwide have determined to live with COVID-19 and adapt to the situation. Vietnam is no exception to this trend. Since the epidemic broke out in early 2020, the Vietnamese Government has built many solutions to deal with it. If these measures are effective, people must voluntarily and unanimously follow them. The tool that helps propagate and convince people, as well as a channel for people to give their feedback, opinions to policymakers for adjustments and more in line with reality, is through political communication. The article will analyse this communication in Vietnam in both directions, from the Government down to the people and vice versa, in the fight against COVID-19 in this country. The article is divided into three main parts: the first part will provide definitions and concepts related to political communication. The second part gives an overview of the activities and effects of political communication in the fight against the epidemic. The final section will concentrate on comments on this communication in Vietnam.

International Students, Immigration Policy, and Perceived Internal Support: Student Reactions to the ‘Travel Ban’

This study explores international students’ interpretations of the President Trump’s controversial 2017 immigration policies and their university’s response to them. Findings suggest the students’ experiences could be profoundly affected by political rhetoric. While an educational institution could distance itself from the rhetoric and students may be reluctant to terminate their enrollment, their educational experiences, career plans, and recommendations they pass on to potential enrollees may remain unaffected by the university’s efforts. The study highlights the necessity of studying such topics as educational experiences and political communication effects in concord, underscoring the fluidity and interconnectedness of aspects of our lives.

Political Communication of Indonesian Female Regional Leaders

The women's presence as regional leaders is one of the strategies for establishing more gender-just policies. Female regional leaders conducted diverse methods to win the votes of their constituents. The communication patterns used are diverse despite having similarities. The research aims to find out and analyze patterns and channels as well as the effects of political communication by female regional leaders in Indonesia. This study used a qualitative approach with three female regional leaders in three Javanese provinces. The research found that women tend to choose communication patterns and channels that used interpersonal communication channels to obtain political information. The female regional leaders used interactive communication patterns through social media, outdoor media, and mass media, such as television and print media. Communication channels used were personal communication channels, group communication channels, public communication channels, social communication channels, and traditional communication channels. The effect is that there is a change in the process of fighting for various public interests through verbal and nonverbal messages and mutual influence with various government policies. The research recommended that it is necessary to change the communication channel using social media massively to greet and discuss with constituents so that the effects are received massively as well.

Is Context the Key? The (Non-)Differential Effects of Mediated Incivility in Three European Countries

There is a worry that serious forms of political conflict, in particular, uncivil behavior of politicians, increases political cynicism and demobilizes the public. Despite the close relation of incivility with social and cultural norms of what is an acceptable form of discussion, studies are mostly restricted to one country. To overcome this blind spot, we conduct a cross-national experiment in three countries (the Netherlands, UK and Spain) testing whether civil and uncivil forms of mediated political conflict affect cynicism toward the EU, political participation intentions, and the support for the policies discussed. Results indicate that despite different levels of conflict in the news, and different levels of cynicism and participation in these countries, the effects of incivility are homogenous. Uncivil political conflict has negative effects on political participation intention and policy support but does not significantly affect cynicism – in each of the three countries. We also test the role of an individual-level factor, namely Tolerance for Disagreement (TfD). Citizens with low levels of TfD are more affected by uncivil conflict, while subjects with high TfD seem to be immune against violations of social norms. We discuss these finding against the backdrop of individual and cultural influences on political communication effects and cross-cultural experimental research in more general terms.

Beyond the Limits of Survey Experiments: How Conjoint Designs Advance Causal Inference in Political Communication Research

This paper calls attention to what is arguably the most notable advancement in survey experiments over the last decade: conjoint designs. The benefit of conjoint design is its capacity to study and compare the causal effects of several dimensions simultaneously. Although survey experiments have long been a preferred method for assessing causal effects, the method falls short when studying multidimensional causal relations.Researchers face a trade-off between a lack of statistical power or a restriction in experimental conditions. Conjoint designs solve this problem by letting the researcher vary an indefinite number of factors in one experiment. This method is quickly gaining ground in social and political science but has yet to be widely practiced in political communication research. This article argues that conjoint designs are ideal for studying political communication effects and highlights the possible benefits of using and innovating conjoint designs in political communication research. We make available sample scripts and demonstrate the value of this methodological technique through empirical examples of trust in news media and selective exposure to political news.

이 연구에서는 정치 커뮤니케이션 효과에 영향을 미치는 요인을 탐색하기 위하여 제45대 미국 대통령 선거 때에 집행된 TV 정치 광고 내용을 분석하였다. 극명하게 대비되는 두 후보인 공화당의 트럼프(Donald Trump) 후보와 민주당의 클린턴(Hillary Clinton) 후보가 효과 극대화를 위하여 사용한 요인들을 밝히고자 하였다. 두 후보의 TV 정치 광고 총 61편을 분석한 결과, 첫째, 두 후보 공히 정책보다는 후보자의 이미지에 관한 내용이 많았다. 둘째, 두 후보 모두 부정적인 메시지의 광고가 긍정적인 메시지 광고보다 많았고, 셋째, 두 후보의 광고에는 감성적 소구보다 이성적 소구가 많았다. 넷째, 광고에 등장하는 모델이나 사운드 등 크리에이티브 요소의 활용에 있어 클린턴의 광고가 더 우월하였다. 두 후보의 TV 정치 광고에서 이미지 소구, 부정 소구, 이성소구 등의 활용에는 차이가 없었으나 보다 세밀하게 내용을 분석하여 들어가면 효과를 극대화하기 위해 서로 다른 질적 요소들을 활용한 것을 발견할 수 있었다.BR 본 연구는 정치 커뮤니케이션의 효과에 영향을 미치는 요인으로 검증된 것이라 할지라도 후보자 특성 등 변수에 따라 활용되지 않을 수 있고, 캠페인 현장에서는 보다 더 효과적인 방향과 기법을 찾아 진화함을 발견하게 된 것에 의의가 있다 할 것이다.

Talking to Whom? The Changing Audience of North Korean Nuclear Tests

ObjectivesIn this study, we develop a model based on big data analysis to find patterns in North Korean nuclear provocations.MethodsUsing automated text analysis classification through supervised machine learning techniques, we analyze the North Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) from 1997 to 2013.ResultsWe find an interesting difference between the Kim Jong‐il era and the Kim and Jong‐un period, implying a major shift in the nuclear policy of Pyongyang. While Kim Jong‐il, who had a firm grip on power, focused on the international audience before conducting nuclear tests, Kim Jong‐un during his succession targeted the domestic audience prior to nuclear tests, probably in an attempt to consolidate his precarious power.ConclusionThe machine learning technique allows us to analyze the effect of political communication even in authoritarian governments.

Political communication and public support for climate mitigation policies: a country-comparative perspective

ABSTRACTUnderstanding under what conditions individuals are willing to support policies aimed at mitigating climate change has important consequences for the legitimacy, costs, effectiveness, and longevity of any policy alternative. Given the politicized nature of climate change, one factor that has been found to be important in explaining public support is partisan political communication. It has, for example, been shown how political communication has important effects on public beliefs and attitudes regarding climate change. A lack of country comparative studies, together with methodological limitations in previous research, has, however, led to a limited understanding of how these processes work, especially in a comparative perspective. In this paper, the effects of political communication on public support for climate mitigation, and the cross-country variations of these effects, is studied. Specifically, this paper investigates: (1) to what degree individual policy attitudes varies across party lines, (2) to what degree variations in policy attitudes can be explained by the effect of party cues, and (3) to what extent the effect of partisanship and political communication varies across political contexts. Using original data from a country comparative online public opinion survey covering Australia, New Zealand, Norway and Sweden political communication is found to significantly influence public policy attitudes in all contexts studied, albeit to different degrees.POLICY RELEVANCEHow individuals perceive and respond to the introduction of public policy is of considerable importance for the chance of any policy being effective. Understanding of how individual policy attitudes are formed is therefore of great importance to the design and implementation of public policy, climate mitigation policy included. Understanding of cross-country variations of factors influencing public policy attitudes is furthermore important for possibilities to effectively import or export policy solutions across political contexts.

Comparing social media use, discussion, political trust and political engagement among university students in China and Hong Kong: an application of the O–S–R–O–R model

ABSTRACTAdopting the Orientation–Stimuli–Reasoning–Orientation–Response (O–S–R–O–R) model of political communication effects, this study examines the mediating roles of online/offline political discussion and political trust on the relationship between social media information seeking and online/offline political participation in China and Hong Kong. Findings through structural equation modeling showed that the relationship between information seeking and online participation was mediated by online discussion for both samples. Moreover, the relationship between information seeking and offline participation was mediated by offline discussion, and offline discussion mediated the relationship between information seeking and online participation. Political trust did not mediate any of the relationships in China and Hong Kong and all significant paths involving political trust were negative. Implications of the findings for youth political participation in China and Hong Kong are discussed.

The Pivotal Role of AJC in the Growth of Communication Research in Asia: A semantic network analysis

ABSTRACTThis study explored how Asian communication scholarship has evolved by using semantic network analysis on keywords in titles of publications in Asian Journal of Communication (AJC) from 1990 to 2015. It also compared those results with the results of a similar analysis of Journalism & Mass Communication Quarterly (JMCQ) to find both Western and unique aspects of AJC. AJC scholarship has shown its Asian uniqueness by exploring social and cultural comparisons focusing on a few East Asian countries. It has also followed Western communication scholarship by investigating effects of political communication and news media, as well as advertising using television in the United States, similar to JMCQ. AJC contributes to mainstream mass communication scholarship while keeping its own Asian perspectives.

Mediated and moderated effects of political communication on civic participation

ABSTRACTAustralian scholars and politicians have long been concerned about politically uninformed and inactive young Australians. However, few efforts have been made to explain how the use of traditional and online media may affect youth’s participation in politics. Our research utilises the citizen communication mediation model and extends the expected mediation chain by an additional examination of the possible interactions between news media use and political discussions, as suggested by the differential gains model. Using representative data from Australian 10th graders, we examine whether and how news media usage (newspapers, television, radio, and the Internet) affects expected participation in a range of civic and political activities conditional of discussions about political issues (with family, friends, and online). Path models account for additional mediators (civic knowledge and civic efficacy) and control variables to explain future civic and political participation. The results suggest that news media use stimulates political discussions, although different media exert differential effects. Yet, news exposure hardly influences the second mediators (civic knowledge and civic efficacy) in a direct manner. In fact, civic knowledge and efficacy mediate the relationships between political communication and participation, both directly and sequentially. Moderation analyses clarify that despite the mediating role of political discussions, news media exposure also influences (future) civic participation contingent of students’ engagement in (primarily Internet-based) discussions about political and social issues. We emphasise the significance of these results with reference to previous research, discuss potential directions for future research, and draw conclusions for civics and citizenship education.

Social Network Sites and Political Engagement: Exploring the Impact of Facebook Connections and Uses on Political Protest and Participation

Past studies have shown positive relationships between use of social network sites (SNSs) and political engagement, but an understanding of the mechanisms underlying the relationship is limited because the studies often did not take into account the diverse affordances of SNSs that can influence participation in different ways. Adopting the O-S-R-O-R (Orientation–Stimulus–Reasoning–Orientation–Response) model of political communication effects, this study examined the roles of Facebook network size, connections with public political actors, use for news, and political expression on political attitudes, protest, and participation. Structural equation analyses were conducted based on data from a national sample in Hong Kong, a city-state with one of the world’s highest Facebook penetration rates. Results showed that Facebook network size and connections with public political actors exhibit both direct and indirect effects on participation through Facebook news, expression, and efficacy. Facebook news exhibited indirect effects primarily though political expression. A discriminant function analysis also showed that age, education, and online news exposure were the most influential variables for distinguishing Facebook users and nonusers. Implications of the findings are discussed.

AbstrakPenelitian ini dilakukan untuk melihat partisipasi selebritis perempuan khususnya OA pengurus Partai Persatuan Pembangunan dan DR pengurus Partai Amanat Nasional dalam komunikasi politik di partai politik maupun di legislatif yang akan dikaji pada persoalan selebritis perempuan sebagai seorang komunikator politik, pesan politik yang akan disampaikan, media komunikasi politik yang dipakai, khalayak politik yang menjadi sasarannya, dan analisa efek komunikasi politik yang muncul. Lokasi penelitian ini dilakukan di kantoir DPP PPP dan DPP PAN Jakarta dan di DPR RI. Jenis penelitian ini merupakan penelitian studi kasus tunggal dengan pendekatan fenomenologis dan termasuk penelitian desktiptif analitik. Teknik pengumpulan data dengan wawancara mendalam, observasi langsung, serta mengkaji dokumen dan arsip. Teknik analisis data dilakukan dengan model analisis interaktif. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan: Pertama, Tingkat kesejahteraan para selebritis perempuan khususnya OA dan DR sesungguhnya tidak perlu dikhawatirkan, bahkan mereka diatas rata-rata tingkat kesejahteraan perempuan lainnya. Kedua, tidak semua akses sumberdaya ekonomi, sosial dan politik bagi perempuan didapatkan baik di lembaga formal maupun informal termasuk bagi OA dan DR. Ketiga, saat ini selebritis perempuan termasuk OA dan DR lebih sadar dan kritis terhadap berbagai bentuk kehidupan terutama bagi masyarakat perkotaan dengan tingkat pendidikan yang lebih maju. Keempat, peran perempuan dalam lembaga legislatif maupun partai politik belumlah setara dengan peran serta laki-laki. Kelima, selebritis perempuan khususnya OA dan DR belum mempunyai kesetaraan dalam hal kontrol/kuasa yang sama sebagaimana halnya dengan laki-laki, untuk mengubah kondisi posisi, masa depan diri dan komunitasnya. Kata kunci: Perempuan, Politik, Partisipasi, Komunikasi Politik, Partai Islam, Pemilu AbstractThis study was conducted to see the participation of celebrity women, especially OA board of Partai Persatuan Pembangun and the DR board of Partai Amanat Nasional in political communication in political parties and in the legislature that will be studied on the issue of celebrity women as a political communicator, a political message to be delivered, media political communication is used, political audiences it addresses, and analyzes the effects of political communication appears. The location of this research is done in the office of the DPP and the DPP PAN Jakarta and in the House of Representatives. This study was a single case study with a phenomenological approach and includes descriptive analytical research. Data collection techniques with in-depth interviews, direct observation, as well as reviewing documents and archives. Data analysis techniques performed by an interactive model. The results showed: First, the level of welfare of women, especially celebrities and DR OA actually nothing to worry about, even those above the average rate of other women's welfare. Second, not all access to economic resources, social and political for women available in both formal and informal institutions, including for OA and DR. Third, the current female celebrities including OA and DR more conscious and critical of the various forms of life, especially for urban communities with more advanced levels of education. Fourth, the role of women in the legislature and political parties has not been equivalent to the participation of men. Fifth, in particular female celebrities OA and DR does not have any equality in terms of control or the same power as with men, to change the conditions of the position, the future of themselves and the community. His relationship with political communication research findings indicate that some of their important roles performed include female celebrities; the role of women as a political communicator celebrities, political messages female celebrities, female celebrities media of political communication, political communication celebrities female audience, and the effects of political communication female celebrities including OA and DR. Televised Political interviews: A Paradigm for Analysis

This paper proposes a paradigm for research on broadcast political interviews. Developed using a series of studies, the paradigm introduces core aspects and questions that should be addressed when examining political interviews in a particular society. This paradigm will enable researchers to collect detailed accounts of the interaction between interviewers and interviewees, the structure and tone of the questions posed to interviewees and the interviewees' communicative style when addressing such questions, and the strategies employed by the participants to pursue their goals. It is hoped that the paradigm will encourage the interest and facilitate the study of televised political interviews particularly from the nationally, culturally, and socially diversified Asian countries. Gathering detailed data from non-Western societies in Asia will also facilitate our understanding of the function and effect of political communication from a cross-cultural perspective.

The effect of political communication on European financial markets during the sovereign debt crisis

Abstract We quantify all statements by major European politicians reported by Reuters during the August 2011 to December 2011 period and show that political communication significantly affects the EUR–USD exchange rate as well as European stock and bond markets. Communication with respect to Italy induces the strongest market reactions. Financial markets consider the German bond market a safe haven.

Political Communication by Political Parties in 2014 Legislative Election in Indonesia

At this time the image of political parties in Indonesia deteriorated because of various problems afflict their cadres in the Parliament and the executive. In order to increase the public's trust, many political parties begin to perform activities of political communication. This research is aimed to discuss and analyze the political communication held by political parties in the election of 2014. In order to analyze the political communication process conducted by the political parties, researchers using the theory of political communication with the indicator: sources (political communicator), political messages, media or political channels, influence or effect of political communication. The method used is qualitative, with primary data sources such as interviews and observations, as well as secondary data such as photo documentation and source literature obtained from other sources. From the research that has been made known that the political parties use the sources of political communication in the form of print media, electronic, outdoor media, and public communication channel group. Associated with the delivery of a political message, that the political parties use multiple channel messages, both textual and non-verbal, where all of the message channel associated with the media or political channels that are used by political parties, namely the print and electronic media. The results of this study also showed that the influence of political communication has been done by the political parties through the mass media are not always able to influence the attitudes or perceptions of society, because it needs to be seen also from the other side that is the perspective and needs of the community. From the results can be concluded that political communication conducted by political parties through a variety of media is no longer always have a dominant effect because audiences are active and independent.
