Effect of indole butyric acid (IBA) on stem cuttings of Shorea leprosula

The application of auxin (indole butyric acid, IBA) significantly increased the rate of root emergence in single node leafy stem cuttings of Shorea leprosula taken from 10-month-old potted seedlings. A range of IBA doses (0, 20, 40, 60 and 80 μg IBA per cutting) were tested and 20 μg per cutting was found to be the best with 70% of cuttings rooted within 12 weeks. Higher doses resulted in less rooting success. IBA application also enhanced the number of roots developed on each cutting. The mean accumulated number of roots per rooted cutting in Week 10 on cuttings treated with 20, 40, 60 and 80 μg IBA was 5.05, 5.26, 4.82 and 4.80 respectively compared with 3.11 for cuttings treated with only a 50% ethanol and water mixture.

Auxin-impregnated hygroscopic gel: effects on ponderosa pine and common hackberry seedlings

Greenhouse and field studies were conducted to determine the effects of indole3-butyric acid (IBA) and 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) on root development and survival of 3+0 bareroot Pinus ponderosa (Dougl. ex Laws.) and 2+0 bareroot Celtis occidentalis (L) seedlings. In the greenhouse, 100 and 200 ppm. IBA and 10 and 50 ppm 2,4-D were applied to seedlings through a root dip in an auxin hygroscopic gel mix. A randomized complete block analysis of variance indicated that IBA gel treatments increased root volume and root dry weight in hackberry and had no effect on ponderosa pine; 2,4-D gel treatments had detrimental effects on both species. In the field, IBA gel treated ponderosa pine seedlings exhibited improved height and survival relative to the non-treated control seedlings. There was no detectable improvement in survival in the field for hackberry. However, diameter and stem dry weight were lower for hackberry seedlings treated with the gel dip alone.

The effect of indolebutyric acid and kinetin on shoot induction of cauliflower leaf cuttings

In 3 separate experiments, IBA at 2000 or 5000 mg l −1 stimulated shoot development on leaf cuttings. Success was higher during the summer months. Kinetin in the range of 10–1000 mg l −1 neither promoted nor inhibited shoot development. Hormones were prepared as aqueous solutions in 50% ethanol and applied to the basal portion of the cuttings. This technique provides a practical method for vegetative propagation of cauliflower for use in breeding programs in temperate regions.

Effect of indolebutyric acid and sampling-dates on the rooting of four Tilia taxa

Softwood and semi-hardwood cuttings of 4 Tilia taxa were taken at different times and treated with high concentrations of IBA. Rooting-response varied with taxa and sampling-date. Rooting in Tilia americana L. cuttings was maximum when taken on 19 May and 1 June. Cuttings of Tilia cordata Mill. did not differ significantly in rootability when taken on 19 May, 22 June or 13 July, but rooting was significantly less with 3 August cuttings. Tilia × euchlora Koch cuttings did not root. All Tilla × euchlora Koch ‘Redmond’ cuttings taken on 19 May or 22 June rooted. A 5-second basal dip of IBA significantly stimulated rooting, especially in the range of 20 000–35 000 mg 1 −1.

With difficult-to-root cultivars, indolebutyric acid (IBA) improved the overall rooting and the numbers of usable rootings of cuttings of early-pruned vines of Salt Creek and Dog Ridge. It improved only the numbers of usable rootings of cuttings of late-pruned vines of Salt Creek and the size of the rootings of cuttings of late-pruned vines of Dog Ridge. IBA improved the size (weight) of rootings of Salt Creek. With easy-to-root cultivars IBA improved the numbers of usable rootings of Ganzin 1 and Zinfandel and size of rootings of Ganzin 1. Refrigeration was detrimental to the size of the rootings of cutting from early-pruned vines of Salt Creek. It reduced the total rooting, numbers of usable rootings and size of rootings of cuttings from early-pruned vines of Dog Ridge, and the size of rootings from cuttings of late-pruned vines of Dog Ridge. It was detrimental to the rooting of cuttings of Thompson Seedless, but had no effect on Ganzin 1.

Effect of Indolebutyric Acid on Distribution of 14C-Photosynthate in Softwood Cuttings of ‘Marianna 2624’ Plum1

Abstract Treating the bases of ‘Marianna 2624’ plum cuttings with indolebutyric acid (IBA) enhanced rooting and affected the distribution of labeled assimilate. IBA, however, did not significantly affect the uptake of 14CO2 by a single leaf or the proportion of fixed radioactivity that was translocated in 20 hours. Approximately 60% of the translocated 14C remained in the stem portion immediately below the treated leaf, whereas less than 5% reached the basal end. The rest of the activity was recovered in the upper stem. This distribution pattern was present in both control and IBA-treated cuttings, and remained essentially unchanged until callus appeared at the base of the latter group. The base of treated cuttings then began to accumulate an increasingly larger share of translocated 14C. This value eventually reached 6 times that found in unrooted controls. Throughout the study, 87-95% of the radioactivity in the base of either type of cutting was in an ethanol-soluble neutral fraction which contained sucrose, glucose, fructose, and sorbitol. Treatment with IBA increased starch loss in the base of the cutting, while the sugar content rose similarly in both types of cuttings. The time of increased mobilization of photosynthate to the base may be influenced more by the extent of local carbohydrates reserves than by a particular stage of rooting.

ROOTING OF HARDWOOD CUTTINGS OF BOLLEANA POPLAR

Hardwood cuttings of Bolleana poplar (Populus alba pyramidalis Bunge, cult Bolleana) were collected monthly during September 1967 to May 1968 and for the same period in 1968–69 and either stuck in a sand-rooting medium within a greenhouse or overwintered in polyethylene bags at 5.5 C. Most cuttings formed roots readily. From 60 to 95% of the cuttings collected and stored from October to April formed roots in the mist bed during May. Cuttings from the current season’s and previous season’s growth rooted equally well. Propagation was seriously impaired by the occurrence of a basal necrosis on the cuttings below the surface of the medium. The effect of indolebutyric acid (IBA) treatment in the promotion of rooting and basal necrosis varied with the time of collection and sticking. The IBA treatment replaced the effect of buds in the promotion of root formation.

Abstract The influence of indolebutyric acid (IBA) and succinic acid-2,2-dimethyl-hydrazide (SADH) on the adventitious root formation of 4 species of woody plants was investigated at concns of 1000, 2500, and 5000 ppm applied as a 15 sec basal dip. At both the 5000 and 2500 ppm levels of IBA, Ilex cornuta Lindl. cv. ‘Burfordii’ and Juniperus horizontalis Moench. cv. ‘Plumosa’ responded with greater adventitious root formation than any of the SADH treatments. Increased adventitious root formation in Cupressus arozonica Greene, was observed only at the 5000 ppm level of IBA. Pinus strobus L. did not respond to any of the treatments.

Three indole acids accelerated glucose uptake in the rat diaphragm. The effect of indole butyric acid was greater than that of indole propionic, which in turn was greater than that of indole acetic. The in vitro hypoglycemic potency of the indole acids paralleled their in vivo potency. Increased hypoglycemic potency may be related to the number of carbon atoms in the indole acid side chain. These and earlier observations in experimental and human neoplasia associated with hypoglycemia suggest that the neoplasm is a rich source of tryptophan material which, in the bloodstream, produces hypoglycemia by increasing the glucose uptake in peripheral muscles, and possibly in the tumor itself.
