We examine the diamagnetic contribution to the effect of an in-plane magnetic field on the excitonic fine structure in quantum dots. Magnetic compression of the wave function in the direction perpendicular to the field modifies the long-range exchange interaction and can contribute to cancellation of the anisotropic exchange splitting. Numerical estimates indicate that this orbital effect can be comparable with the Zeeman spin effect and should play a significant role in usual experimental configurations.
