Tourism Student Satisfaction with Extra-curricular Activities in a Public Higher Education Institution in the Philippines

Higher education institution (HEI) is viewed as a significant driver of individual and national prosperity. HEI in the Philippines like Mindoro State University (MinSU), the only university in the province, delivers student development services that are designed for the exploration, enhancement, and development of the student’s full potential for personal growth, leadership, and social responsibility through various institutional and student-initiated activities. Recognizing this, MinSU is focusing on meeting its students’ needs, expectations, and satisfaction, the ultimate beneficiaries of the educational experience. This study assessed the satisfaction of tourism management students with extra-curricular activities (ECAs) during the academic year 2023-2024. Employing a mixed-methods approach, the study utilizes a quantitative survey to gauge overall satisfaction and identify areas of strength and weakness. Additionally, qualitative interviews provide an in-depth exploration of student experiences, allowing them to articulate the “why” behind their satisfaction levels and let them make recommendations. Findings show students prioritized participation in cultural ECAs that provided opportunities to showcase their talents and creativity, contributing to reduced academic stress. Additionally, to improve student preparedness, the Council of Tourism Students Organization might consider a phased implementation of the existing SCALE program for the next semester. This study provides the factors that contribute to student satisfaction with ECAs, ultimately for the development of more engaging and enriching action plans that enhance the holistic experience towards student-initiated activities for lifelong learners as the future tourism industry workforce.

Long-term effects of a school-based experiential nutrition education intervention

ABSTRACT Nutrition education is essential for the development of healthy eating behaviours among children. Over the past few years, multiple nutrition education programmes have been implemented in primary schools. In the current study, the long-term effects of the experiential nutrition education programme ‘Learning Street’ are assessed. This 3-week programme comprises a classroom-based introduction lesson, a visit to a fruit or vegetable (FV) farmer, a cooking workshop, and a joint eating moment. The programme is designed for children aged 8–12 years. Questionnaire outcomes of 11-to-12-year-old children (n = 87) who participated in a Learning Street programme two years before were compared to those of a control group (n = 102) with similar demographics. The questionnaire included questions on children’s FV knowledge, liking, intake, and attitude, as well as their general health attitude, cooking self-efficacy, and cooking attitude. There was a significant difference in FV attitude (Cohen’s d = 0.55; 95% CI: −0.69 to −0.21) and general health attitude (Cohen’s d = 0.37; 95% CI: −0.56 to −0.07) between the intervention and the control groups. For general health attitude, the difference was only significant for a subgroup of children (n = 25) who had participated in two Learning Street programmes. The findings suggest that regularly exposing children to experiential nutrition education may have long-term benefits.

An Empirical Qualitative Investigation into Psychosexual Development in and Sex Education for Autistic Youth: Insights from Autistic and Non-Autistic Young Adults.

The present study was designed to examine autistic and non-autistic young adults' lived experience in psychosexual development and sex education and to solicit recommendations on how to improve sex education programs. Participants included 10 autistic young adults and 10 non-autistic young adults aged 18 to 24 years. The two groups were matched for sex and education level. One-on-one semi-structured interviews were conducted. Participants' responses were analyzed using comparative interpretative phenomenological analysis. Four superordinate themes emerged: (1) "Who am I as a sexual being"; (2) Making sense of psychosexual development; (3) Sources of information; and (4) "Dear developers of sex education programs". Most autistic participants shared feelings of intense anxiety about romantic and sexual relationships, in part due to anticipated difficulties in social communication. Interestingly, although interview questions mostly focused on sex and adolescence, issues surrounding romantic relationships and their links to current self-concept were prominent themes in many autistic participants' responses, suggesting that autism-friendly sex education programs need to address issues related to romance and should target not only adolescents but also young adults. Also, autistic participants learned from peer interactions within the autistic community, highlighting the importance of facilitating peer exchanges and continuous learning beyond completing a program. Regarding delivery format, autistic participants valued concreteness and a mixed-sex small-group setting, and recommended using visual cues, real life examples, and role play. Autistic individuals have unmet psychosexual educational needs. Further research may consider their needs, lived experience, and recommendations when developing new autism-friendly sex education programs.

The study of meaning, in philosophy and psychology, is important to reveal the influences toward individual well-being, especially optimism. This study examined the influences of various factors, such as social media, family environment, education, and personal experiences on Z-generation's perception of the meaning of life and their levels of optimism. Age, sex type, and spirituality are influential factors for searching for meaning in life, found based on the journal article review. The Age influences a person's search for life's meaning and their optimism. Sex type also plays an important role; men tend to discover meaning in life through family roles and social relationships, while women tend to discover meaning through achievement and independence. Spirituality, such as religious practices and spiritual beliefs, offers a framework to discover the meaning of life and remain optimistic, especially through the social support of the spiritual community.

Deep learning enabled exercise monitoring system for sustainable online education of future teacher-trainers

IntroductionIn recent years, the importance of effective training methods for future physical education teacher-trainers has grown significantly, particularly in the context of online education.MethodsThis research introduces a pioneering Deep Learning Enabled Exercise Monitoring System aimed at enhancing the online education experience for these trainers. The study employs a skeleton-based approach utilizing the PoseNet model to monitor and provide real-time feedback on physical exercises such as pull-ups, push-ups, sit-ups, squats, and bicep workouts. The system achieves a remarkable accuracy rate of 99.8% by analyzing key skeletal points extracted from video frames, addressing the challenge of ensuring correct exercise execution without physical supervision–a common issue in remote learning environments.ResultsTo validate the system’s effectiveness, data was collected through a series of controlled experiments involving various exercises. The system’s design focuses on low-resource requirements, making it accessible and sustainable for diverse educational contexts.DiscussionThe findings demonstrate the system’s potential to revolutionize online physical education by offering a balance of technological innovation and educational utility. This research not only elevates the quality of training for future educators but also contributes to the broader field of sustainable digital education technologies.

Good Teaching Practices in Education and Support to Learning in Middle School

Contemporary education faces the challenge of innovating to improve the quality of learning, requiring teachers to adopt effective methodological strategies. This study examines teaching strategies and good practices in middle school education in Cuenca, Ecuador, with the objective of identifying effective approaches and areas for improvement. The methodology employed was mixed, combining qualitative and quantitative approaches. A prospective and non-experimental design was used, which allowed observing educational phenomena without intervening in their development. The research included semi-structured interviews, focus groups and life stories to capture in-depth educational experiences. In addition, surveys were applied to a representative sample of teachers and students to obtain quantitative data on the perception and effectiveness of teaching practices. The main result of the study highlights that solid teacher training and the use of innovative technologies are crucial to improve educational quality and promote an inclusive and equitable environment.

De-centering English with “language of the day” in undergraduate linguistics

Undergraduate linguistics courses often prioritize data from prestige varieties of English. This limits student learning to test cases of English and centers prestige varieties in the linguistics educational experience. We developed a method for de-centering English by exposing students to many languages in “language of the day” (LotD) activities. These activities broadened student knowledge of the world’s languages and improved student achievement on core analytical skills. This paper covers our implementation of LotD across two undergraduate phonetics and phonology courses, student and instructor reception, and suggestions for adaptation across subfields and course types.

Exploring Suggestions from Educational Leaders and ChatGPT for Addressing Problems of Practice in TeleED

Educational leaders are faced with multi-faceted dilemmas that place decision-making at the heart of their day-to-day work. For support, they often turn to collaborative networks of experienced educators, such as Project ECHO, for solutions to address challenges they encounter while working in the field. The availability of generative AI technology, however, may have potential for informing the solutions to complex educational dilemmas as well, saving time and offering efficiency for problem solving. This study compares solutions for three problems of practice (PoP) that were generated through ChatGPT software and those proposed by the educational leaders in TeleED, an online professional development platform. The problem of practice in this study refers to complex, real-world challenges or problems shared by educational leaders. Findings indicate that solutions to these PoPs showed similarities, suggesting that both ChatGPT and the educational leaders in TeleED highlight ideas such as documentation and peer mentoring to address challenges. This reflects ChatGPT’s ability to generate applicable solutions to complex problems that somewhat mirror solutions posed by leaders. However, educational leaders offered solutions that were nuanced, context specific, and contained explanations of resources and experiences that enhanced discussions. Findings suggest that ChatGPT may have utility for enhancing decision-making but not replacing the human element.

This qualitative study delves into the innovative Bilingual Grammar Curriculum. The curriculum aims to enhance bilingualism and linguistic skills among deaf students by integrating American Sign Language instruction and written language grammatical structures. The researcher conducted in-depth interviews with 12 experienced educators of the deaf who have implemented the curriculum in their teaching practices. Employing a thematic analysis approach, the researcher sought to uncover the educators' perceptions, experiences, and insights regarding the curriculum's effectiveness and its impact on bilingual language acquisition for deaf learners. Findings revealed a diverse range or perspectives, highlighting both the advantages and challenges of the curriculum's implementation. Themes emerged encompassing the curriculum's alignment with linguistic theories, its adaptability to diverse learning needs, the role of educator training, and the incorporation of cultural nuances within bilingual instruction. The study contributes valuable insights to the field of deaf education, shedding light on the intricate dynamics of bilingual grammar pedagogy and providing recommendations for curriculum refinement and educator professional development. Ultimately, this research underscores the significance of innovative approaches in enhancing the linguistic abilities and educational experiences of deaf and hard-of-hearing students within a bilingual framework.

Multiracial experiences in higher education: Contesting knowledge, honoring voice, and innovating practice

Design Principles for a Higher Education Course Focusing on Lifelong Learning

Lifelong learning for solving work assignments is essential for societal and personal development. Higher education is one natural part of lifelong learning and, therefore, needs to be re-focused from solely younger students to include professionals and their development goals. One problem related to giving a course for professionals is their struggle between work assignments and the course. Focusing on the added perspective of professionals for higher education, this study presents five design principles for courses for professionals. Design principles are guidelines based on experience and iterative development in higher education. The empirical data comes from a course in digitalisation and digital transformation, which was given thrice. The course participants were professionals from private and public organisations in Sweden. The empirical data originates from the professionals who made a check-in, mid-term evaluation, and evaluation after the course, resulting in 75 entries. Two researchers analysed the first two course entries inductively, forming the foundation for the first round of design principles. The course design for the third round was then revised according to its weaknesses. Based on the strengths and weaknesses found in empirical material from all three courses, the current design principles are professional pathways referring to new knowledge directly linked to real-world applications, knowledge evolution, meaning gradual integration of knowledge using seminars and examination assignments, preparedness protocol focusing on updated information and structured templates for the seminars. Further, the design principle of collaborative connection includes discussion where professionals exchange experiences, and the last principle, learning fusion, directs toward blended learning by combining face-to-face seminars and films. The revised course design, according to the design principles, implied that the number of professionals graduating and their grades increased. The findings of this study add theoretically to existing knowledge and practical implications by providing design principles that higher education teachers and other stakeholders can use to design or revise professional development courses. The design principles could be used stand-alone or combined to increase professionals' learning and satisfaction.

Certificate in Advanced Behavioral Interventions Among Multiple Populations

This manuscript describes the curricular and instructional approaches utilized in the composition and delivery of the Certificate in Advanced Behavioral Interventions Among Multiple Populations (CABISAM) created by the School of Social Work at Loyola University Chicago. CABISAM is a social work led interprofessional education (IPE) model where students from social work, nursing, and medicine engage in didactic and experiential activities to advance clinical and leadership knowledge of interprofessional approaches to screening, brief intervention, and referral for treatment (SBIRT) with diverse populations. An interprofessional team of faculty from each discipline was involved throughout the development and planning process to consider accreditation, cultural, and logistical issues unique to each profession. CABISAM engages students in an evidenced-based interprofessional education (IPE) experience with exposure to cutting-edge topics relevant to health professionals: training in interprofessional practice, substance use in unique settings with diverse populations, and clinical implementation skills. This manuscript presents an adaptable and generalizable interprofessional education approach to other undergraduate and graduate programs across disciplines.

Using Peer Assessment Leveraging Large Language Models in Software Engineering Education

This paper explores the integration of generative AI and large language models into the realm of software engineering education and training, with a specific focus on the transformation of traditional peer assessment methodologies. The motivation stems from the growing demand for innovative educational techniques that can effectively engage and empower learners in mastering Software Engineering principles. The proposed approach involves presenting students with modeling exercises solved by ChatGPT, prompting them to critically evaluate and provide constructive feedback on the generated solutions. By engaging students in a dialogue with the AI model, we aim to foster a dynamic learning environment where learners can articulate their considerations and insights, thereby enhancing their comprehension of software engineering principles, critical thinking and self evaluation skills. Preliminary results from pilot implementations indicate promising outcomes, suggesting that this approach not only enhances the quality of peer feedback but also contributes to a more interactive and engaging educational experience.

ETHICAL DILEMMAS IN MEDICAL CARE FOR WOMEN IN SITUATIONS OF SOCIAL VULNERABILITY: EXPANDING THE DEBATE ON MARGINALIZED POPULATIONS IN EDUCATION

This paper addresses reflections and discussions on the female figure in the context of social marginalization, linked to threats to human rights, with a focus on access to health care and quality longitudinal monitoring. This debate analyzes the historical process of marginalization and oppression amplified when women are inserted as street dwellers, enhancing the weaknesses of helplessness and substance abuse, thus aggravating violence and stigma. This is a narrative review of literature, of a reflective nature, associated with a report of an educational experience in the construction of a teaching methodology based on a fictitious case that triggers discussion and resolution of problems linked to human rights violations of marginalized women, in the light of philosophies of law and the study of public policies for undergraduate medical students. The development of the work shows the importance of expanding studies on this topic, focusing on historically invisible people, in a problematizing narrative, using the construction of clinical cases containing not only health needs for a resolution of medicalization, based strictly on biological diagnoses, but that challenge the reflective thinking of social medicine, directing the debate towards human rights lines, in a context of interprofessional dialogues and studies of public policies, as essential in the training of doctors committed to guaranteeing equity and access to the most neglected population segments in Brazil.

Critical reflection and global citizenship education: exploring the views and experiences of teacher educators

ABSTRACT Reflection and reflective practice are internationally recognised as vital and central dimensions of initial teacher education (ITE) programmes. Despite this, numerous studies have identified issues relating to the process and impact of reflection on pre-service teachers views and practices, with critical reflection frequently remaining elusive. Drawing on in-depth interview data with teacher educators (n = 5), this paper explores teacher educators’ experience, concerns and understanding of reflection within ITE and the relationship between reflection and Global Citizenship Education (GCE). GCE is UNESCO’s response to global inequality and unsustainability and when integrated appropriately and effectively in education settings, can contribute to teaching and learning activities that support learners to explore the wider world and our place within it. Drawing on the data, the paper questions the dominant and persistent approaches to engaging with reflective practice and (critical) reflection within ITE, raising important questions around what reflection is or should be, and explores, through the lens of GCE, some possibilities for future practice.

A process evaluation of a LifeLab Dublin; an interactive health literacy intervention

Abstract The argument for targeting adolescent health has been made strongly, with poor lifestyle behaviours often emerging during this life stage. Furthermore, there is consistent evidence of a widening socioeconomic gap in health indicators. Developing health literacy (HL) in youth populations to improve lifelong health behaviours has garnered increased interest in recent years. This process evaluation examines the acceptability, fidelity and dose delivered of the pilot of LifeLab Dublin: a nine-week, school-based HL intervention for low socioeconomic adolescents. The intervention, which comprised of two out-of-school, interactive HL experiences in conjunction with seven school-based lessons, took place between September and December in 2021 and involved students aged 11 - 13. The health issues targeted were previously identified by the teachers and students of the target population, and the learning activities within the out-of-school experiences were co-designed by adolescents of a similar demographic. Overall, the intervention was perceived positively by the students and teachers, particularly the two interactive out-of-school experiences. The teachers, however, highlighted issues with the volume and content of the school-based lessons, resulting in a reduced number of lessons being delivered. The fidelity of the two LifeLab experiences was high, demonstrating that the students engaged well with the learning activities and that the experience aligned with LifeLab’s core principles and underpinning theoretical constructs. The findings from this study highlight the value in implementing experiential style learning in school-based HL education and the benefit of involving participants in the design of intervention. The evaluation provided valuable insight into the refinements required to enhance the efficacy of the intervention, as well as providing an evidence-base to inform future school-based HL interventions for low socioeconomic adolescents. Early life social predictors of longitudinal relations between childhood BMI and overeating

Abstract Introduction The progression of obesity is a continuous process involving a complex system of genetic, environmental, and behavioural factors. Socioeconomic disadvantage as well as psychological distress may lead to overeating, subsequently associated with increased energy intake and weight gain. Recent evidence indicated that the association between childhood obesity and overeating might be bidirectional. Therefore, this study aimed to longitudinally investigate the directionality of the association between childhood BMI and overeating and to identify antecedent early childhood predictors. Methods The study sample included 5,777 children from the European Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ELSPAC), collected between 18 months and 11 years of child age. The outcomes were child BMI and overeating. Predictors included maternal BMI, maternal education, single-parent households, financial difficulties, and adverse childhood experiences (ACEs). The random intercept cross-lagged panel model (RI-CLPM) was applied. Results The results showed temporal stability in the development of overeating and BMI, with a bidirectional relationship that strengthened over time. The child’s BMI was predicted by maternal BMI (β = 0.37, p < 0.001). The child’s overeating was predicted by maternal BMI (β = 0.13, p < 0.001), but a stronger effect was found for ACEs (β = 0.24, p < 0.001). ACEs mediated the impact of maternal education, financial difficulties, and single parenthood on overeating with indirect effects of β = -0.01 (p = 0.005), β = 0.04, (p < 0.001), and β = 0.07 (p < 0.001), respectively. Conclusions We observed stable bidirectional longitudinal effects, with a stronger association from BMI to overeating. The results suggested two main pathways: one linked to maternal BMI and early childhood BMI increase followed by overeating, and the other associated with ACEs mediating the effect of early childhood socioeconomic factors on overeating, leading to gradual BMI gain. #NGEU Key messages • The study revealed a stable bidirectional association between childhood BMI and overeating, with a stronger association from BMI to overeating. • There are two potential pathways in childhood obesity development, one involving maternal BMI, and the second associated with social disadvantage and ACEs.
