Exploring ChatGPT literacy in language education: A global perspective and comprehensive approach

With the widespread use of Generative AI in education, effectively utilizing and integrating it into teaching have become key focal points and challenges in education. Different subjects and target audiences require varied norms and strategies for implementing Generative AI, such as ChatGPT. These differences directly impact the educational integration of Generative AI in various educational contexts. To address these disparities and establish common ground, we propose the concept of ChatGPT literacy to bridge research gaps. In this study, we tailor the concept of ChatGPT literacy specifically for language teachers, aiming to delineate the essential competencies needed to proficiently and ethically use ChatGPT as a language learning and teaching tool. We propose a theoretical framework encompassing six fundamental constructs: benefits, limitations, prompts, evaluation (of ChatGPT responses), assessment (assisted by ChatGPT), and ethics, to comprehensively conceptualise and evaluate ChatGPT literacy. Drawing on both quantitative and qualitative survey data from 492 language teachers across 41 countries, we validate the proposed ChatGPT literacy framework by examining teachers' practices and challenges associated with ChatGPT usage. Our analysis of Likert-scale data, utilizing item and confirmatory techniques, confirms the effectiveness of the six-construct framework in defining ChatGPT literacy. In addition, we collected qualitative data through open questions and conducted thematic analysis, demonstrating that ChatGPT has been integrated throughout the instructional cycle, from material preparation to formative and summative assessment phases. These quantitative and qualitative findings have significant implications for a range of stakeholders, including language educators, learners, AI technology developers, and policymakers, providing valuable insights to inform decisions regarding ChatGPT integration in language education. Ultimately, our study equips relevant stakeholders with the necessary competencies to responsibly exploiting ChatGPT's potential in language and other subject areas.

The consumer behavior of university students is an intriguing phenomenon to explore given the dominant influence of social media and evolving lifestyles among students. This study aims to investigate the relationship between social media usage, lifestyle, and financial literacy on the consumer behavior of students in Surakarta City. The research employed a quantitative approach, collecting data from 97 active student respondents using social media from several universities in Surakarta City. A structured questionnaire was used to gather data on variables such as social media usage, lifestyle, financial literacy, and student consumer behavior.The data analysis results indicate a significant positive correlation between social media usage and student consumer behavior. Additionally, a consumptive lifestyle also positively influences student consumer behavior. However, financial literacy does not show a positive influence on student consumer behavior in Surakarta City. These findings underscore the importance of financial literacy education among students as a preventive measure against the negative effects of social media usage and consumptive lifestyles.The implications of this study can serve as a basis for developing educational programs and policies aimed at enhancing awareness and financial skills among students.

Process for Improving the Quality of Digital Literacy Education for Bankers in Timor Leste

Digital literacy is crucial for economic and social development, particularly in regions like Timor Leste aiming to enhance educational standards among professionals such as bankers. This study aims to investigate the process of improving digital literacy education for bankers in Timor Leste, focusing on enhancing their skills in using digital tools and platforms effectively. The research adopts a qualitative approach, using interviews and surveys to gather insights from bankers regarding their current digital literacy levels and educational needs. Data analysis will involve thematic analysis to identify key areas for improvement. Initial findings indicate a significant gap in digital literacy among bankers in Timor Leste, highlighting a need for tailored educational programs. Recommendations include the development of specialized training modules focusing on digital security, data analytics, and digital communication tools. In conclusion, enhancing digital literacy among bankers in Timor Leste is essential for their professional growth and the economic development of the region. Effective educational interventions can empower bankers with the necessary skills to navigate the digital landscape competently and contribute to sustainable development goals.

The Challenges and Countermeasures of Shaping the Ideology and Moral Character of Middle School Students in the New Era

In the context of new era development, the shaping of middle school students' ideological and moral character is of great significance, playing a critical role in their physical and mental health, value formation, and future development. However, changes in the social environment, educational philosophy, and information technology have brought many challenges to the ideological and moral character shaping of middle school students, such as the impact of diversified social values, the negative influence of online information, the lack of family education, and inadequate school education.This article thoroughly analyzes these challenges and puts forward targeted countermeasures such as strengthening the education of socialist core values, enhancing network literacy education, optimizing family education, and improving school education to promote the healthy development of middle school students' ideological and moral character.

Designing a health literacy model for patients with diabetes

BackgroundLow health literacy levels among individuals with type 2 diabetes are common and may be a fundamental barrier to increasing self-efficacy and self-care in patients. Therefore, the present study aimed to propose a model for educating health literacy in diabetic patients in hospitals affiliated with the Islamic Azad University of Medical Sciences, Tehran.MethodsThis research was applied in terms of purpose, mixed-methods (qualitative-quantitative) in terms of data type, qualitative content analysis, and cross-sectional survey in the quantitative aspect (fitness of model). The statistical population in the qualitative section included 18 participants from experts in the field of health care. In the quantitative section, 220 educators working in hospitals affiliated with the Islamic Azad University of Medical Sciences, Tehran, were selected using stratified random sampling. Data collection tools included interviews in the qualitative section and research-made questionnaire in the quantitative section. For data analysis, coding was used in the qualitative section, and structural equation modeling was used in the quantitative section.ResultsFor this model, 6 dimensions, 17 components, and 78 items were identified. The results showed that the basic literacy dimension had a coefficient of 0.729, the specialized literacy dimension had a coefficient of 0.712, diabetes management had a coefficient of 0.654, social literacy dimension had a coefficient of 0.630, cultural literacy dimension had a coefficient of 0.605, and media literacy had a coefficient of 0.535, respectively, contributing the most to the health literacy of diabetic patients.ConclusionSince the “Health Literacy Education” model has a good fitness, it is recommended that this model will be applied in different settings such as hospitals in order to improving the health level of patients.

Implementation of Science Literacy in Science Study Courses for PGSD Students

In the world of Science Education, Science Literacy plays an important role in preparing quality and competent students who are able to compete at the international level. To cultivate and improve science literacy in science education, lecturers must create a learning environment that actively involves students. Learning that is dominated by lecturer-centered methods, such as lectures and textbooks, produces passive learners, which can lead to boredom and lack of reasoning and knowledge in science literacy. This study aims to explore the implementation of science literacy in the Science Study Course for PGSD students. The methodology involves literature studies, field observations, and interviews. Data were obtained through reviewing articles, journals, and other relevant sources related to the research, supported by observations and interviews, and then analyzed qualitatively through descriptive descriptions. The results of the study show: (1) the implementation of science literacy facilitates students in understanding the material presented, namely the solar system through various activities such as reading scientific texts, writing scientific essays, creative activities or making posters, searching for information, reflection, presentations, discussions, and questions and answers, (2) supporting factors in the science literacy movement are the lecturers who teach, available facilities, scientific articles, and book references.

Current Situation and Influencing Factors of Kindergarten Teachers' Participation in Training for Preschool Sex Education

Objective To understand the current situation and influencing factors of kindergarten teachers' participation in training for preschool sex education in Luzhou city,and provide a basis for improving the sex education literacy of kindergarten teachers in the future. Methods A multi-stage stratified cluster sampling method was adopted,and a questionnaire survey was conducted from December 2021 to January 2022 on the knowledge,attitude,and practice of preschool sex education among all the teachers in 24 kindergartens in Luzhou city. Results Among the 461 teachers,43.0% had participated in lectures/courses/training activities related to preschool sex education;99.1% hoped to participate in lectures/courses/training activities related to preschool sex education;82.6% learned about child sexual knowledge through school education;75.5% expressed the hope to learn about child sexual knowledge through expert training.The results of multivariate Logistic regression showed that except private kindergartens as an inhibiting factor (OR=0.57,95%CI=0.37-0.87,P=0.008),high monthly income (OR=3.52,95%CI=1.13-9.30,P=0.011),more ways to know about sex education knowledge (OR=2.87,95%CI=1.76-4.70,P<0.001),and social support (OR=1.58,95%CI=1.04-2.38, P=0.030) were promoting factors for teachers to participate in the training for preschool sex education. Conclusion The kindergarten teachers presented a participation rate but a high demand for the training for preschool sex education.They mainly obtain the sex education knowledge from school education.The nature of kindergarten,monthly income of teachers,social support situation,and ways of understanding sex education knowledge are the key factors influencing the teachers' participation in the training for preschool sex education.

Motor development: A precursor to support Grade R literacy learning – Lessons from BuddingQ

Background: In South Africa, low literacy rates among children, particularly in early grades, present a critical challenge to the nation’s educational development. This study addresses the pressing issue of inadequate early childhood literacy education, aiming to bridge the gap between research and practice by advocating for effective interventions in the South African context.Objectives: The study seeks to understand the systemic challenges that hinder early literacy development in South Africa and to explore evidence-informed methods for improving literacy outcomes. By focusing on key elements of effective interventions, such as early initiation, evidence-based programme design, resource allocation, and monitoring and evaluation frameworks, this research aims to provide practical insights into reshaping literacy education in the country.Method: We conducted a qualitative case study of the BuddingQ intervention in Makhanda, South Africa, using interviews, observations, and content analysis.Results: The study revealed that prioritising early intervention, investing in evidence-informed programmes, proper resource allocation, and implementing robust monitoring and evaluation mechanisms are critical components of successful early literacy interventions. BuddingQ, by emphasising foundational skills development through play and movement, demonstrated a positive impact on children’s emergent literacy capabilities.Conclusion: South Africa needs transformative leadership and policy reforms for early childhood literacy. Evidence-based methods can promote educational equity, social justice, and improved literacy outcomes.Contribution: This study provides insights into effective early literacy interventions in South Africa, offering practical recommendations for policymakers, educators, and researchers to reshape literacy education and foster progress.

TEACHERS’ USE OF TELEGRAM CHATBOT AS LEARNING MEDIA AT SMPN 4 BINJAI

This study explores the implementation of Telegram chatbots as learning media at SMPN 4 Binjai, focusing on enhancing teaching and learning processes through digital transformation. Telegram can serve as effective learning tools by facilitating interaction among teachers, students, and parents (Sanaky, 2023), the research involved training and mentoring 21 teachers using methods such as presentations, discussions, and simulations over three meetings. The chatbots aimed to address challenges such as workload management and student engagement by providing automated content distribution, quizzes, and feedback. Findings indicate that Telegram chatbots significantly enhance the efficiency of delivering educational material, boost student interest and engagement, and promote independent learning. This study underscores the importance of digital literacy in modern education and suggests that ongoing training and support are crucial for maximizing the effectiveness of Telegram chatbots. By creating more interactive and responsive learning environments, chatbots offer a promising future for educational settings. The results highlight the necessity for educational institutions to embrace technological changes and provide continuous training for educators to fully utilize digital tools' potential, thereby improving the overall quality of education.

Dong Brocade in Hunan, China: Literacy and Re-invention of Tradition in the Perspective of Intangible Cultural Heritage Protection

In this study, we investigated (i) the history, development, and current situation of Dong brocade in the Dong Autonomous County of Passage, Hunan Province, China, from the perspective of the historical development of the Dong ethnic group and (ii) the traditional re-invention of Dong brocade weaving techniques and the re-creation of the traditional educational literacy in the perspective of the intangible cultural heritage protection. This study is qualitative, mainly using the concepts of traditional re-invention and educational literacy, adopting two methods of data collection, namely, documentary research and field survey, and presenting them in the form of descriptive analysis. The results of the study show that the Dong people in China have a long history, and Dong brocade is a product of the social life and ecological environment of the local Dong people. With the development of the times and under different social demands, Dong brocade has been recreated in terms of the production process, raw materials, product types, and traditional education, and the literacy of Dong brocade has also been “recreated.” This study explores how to promote the traditional re-creation of Dong brocade from the perspective of intangible cultural heritage protection and how to realize the educational literacy of Dong brocade in various ways with the support of the government, enterprises, and universities. This is of great value to the theoretical study of the living heritage of Dong Brocade and the Chinese government’s promotion of the protection and development of minority cultures.

Let’s Edit: Using Wikipedia Edit-a-thons as Vehicles for Information Literacy

This article explores the integration of Wikipedia into information literacy instruction through the use of edit-a-thons, highlighting its potential despite historical skepticism from librarians. Wikipedia's mission aligns with librarianship’s core values of providing free access to information, yet its open-source nature challenges traditional notions of authority and reliability. The article advocates for leveraging Wikipedia as a tool for active learning, specifically to enhance students' understanding of the American College and Research Libraries’ (ACRL) information literacy frames. By hosting edit-a-thons, librarians can engage students in hands-on activities that improve their skills in evaluating sources and understanding authority. The article provides practical recommendations for conducting successful edit-a-thons, including creating Edit Guides, embracing the social aspects of these events, and using Wikipedia-Integrated Outreach Dashboards for program evaluation. Ultimately, it argues that Wikipedia can significantly contribute to information literacy education and suggests strategies for librarians to effectively incorporate it into their instructional practices.

Cultural Landscape of Industrial Heritage: Aesthetic Literacy Education of the Spatial Production Thought

As China’s economy and culture become increasingly globalized and open to exchange, students’ aesthetic views have revealed potential danger signals during the evolution of civilization, sometimes manifesting as deliberate neglect and challenge to righteous culture. This study focuses on the issues faced by contemporary aesthetic education for students, particularly the oversight by teachers during lesson preparation in identifying learning materials that are both engaging for students and have experiential educational value. Based on the immersive learning characteristics of intuitive experiential education, the study employs an exploratory case study method, utilizing the industrial heritage cultural landscape of Fanshan Town in Anhui, China, as a tool and resource for students’ aesthetic education. It constructs a knowledge system of alum culture landscape aesthetic literacy, grounded in the thought of “Harmony between Man and Nature”, centered on the elements of contemporary students’ aesthetic literacy. The findings indicate that the cultural landscape of the alum industrial heritage situates the construction of the aesthetic literacy knowledge system within a broader and more credible temporal and spatial context. This provides high-quality learning materials for the experiential teaching process, helping students draw lessons from historical reflection and enrich their aesthetic cultural literacy.

Role of Digital Literacy in Shaping the Socialization of University Students

The objectives of the study were to explore the current landscape of digital literacy among university students; to identify the role of digital literacy on socialization dynamics within university students. This study collected quantitative data from 300 students through a questionnaire. The analysis found that majority of the respondents agreed that digital literacy assists students in developing social skills and etiquette, digital literacy positively impacts their social interaction manners, digital literacy has significant impact on communication skills, digital tools influence their social interactions. They had also agreed that digital literacy influences their perception of social norms, digital literacy facilitates and integrates different cultures, norms, and practices, access to digital technology can bridge up social interaction gaps among students, digital literacy can empower students to participate more actively in civic engagement, digital literacy promotes critical thinking among students. They had also agreed that digital literacy has made people more connected, digital literacy platforms influenced their values or attitudes toward social issues, digital literacy education emphasizes ethical considerations during socialization, empathy can be cultivated and practiced in online interactions, similar to face-to-face interactions, digital literacy tools can help to convey empathy and emotional nuances effectively. They had also agreed that digital literacy promotes understanding and respect among university students and digital literacy skills enhance students’ adaptability in social settings.

Literacy Transmission of Chinese Folk Songs in Southern Shaanxi

Southern Shaanxi, rich in folk song culture, faces significant challenges in preserving its musical heritage due to rapid modernization, technological advancements, and social changes. The primary objective is to investigate the educational literacy development and transmission processes of Chinese folk songs in Southern Shaanxi under contemporary status. The research site encompasses cities like Hanzhong and Ankang, with seven key informants, including folk song practitioners, educators, cultural experts, students, and community members, provided insights through interviews, observations, and document analysis. Thematic analysis was employed to identify patterns and themes related to educational literacy development, transmission processes, and cultural influences. The results indicate that integrating folk songs into educational curricula enhances language acquisition, critical thinking, emotional expression, and cognitive skills while revealing challenges such as the loss of traditional environments, the complexity of singing techniques, and economic constraints. The study suggests embracing technological innovations, fostering community involvement, and implementing supportive policies to sustain the transmission of Chinese folk songs and promote cultural literacy among younger generations.

Family Involvement and Physical Education: A Collaborative Strategy to Enhance Students' Physical Literacy

This study examines the impact of family involvement on students' physical education literacy and proposes effective collaborative strategies. Through a case study of a typical family, interview data from students, parents and physical education teachers as well as observation records of classroom and extracurricular activities were collected. The results show that active family involvement can significantly improve students' physical education interest, skills and knowledge. Based on this, this paper proposes a variety of strategies to promote synergistic co-operation between families and schools in physical education in order to enhance students' physical literacy in a holistic manner.

China’s Perspectives on the Modern Educational Value of Critical Information Literacy

Critical information literacy is a new and important direction of information literacy education for university students in the new media era. By comparing critical information literacy between China and the West, combining with the research on information literacy education in China in the past 20 years, and based on the three major relationships that Chinese philosophy is concerned about that people need to face in the world of life, i.e., the individual and the self, the individual and nature, and the individual and the society, this paper defines critical information literacy as that individuals, as information subjects, discover, select, confirm, and evaluate the information they are exposed to by obtaining and discriminating the content elements of the information world (information sources, information, and information assets) and using critical thinking skills and methods, creatively interpret or solve the relevant problems arising from the interaction between individuals and self, individuals and nature, individuals and society, and form the literacy that represents the knowledge, ability, attitude, habit, and level of the information subject through continuous reflection and practice. In order for human beings to better understand the world and construct it responsibly, critical information literacy can play a greater role and educational value. It not only helps contemporary college students build knowledge of “good questioning” and enhance their “reasoning” skills, but also encourages them to maintain a “firm standpoint,” cultivate a habit of “healthy skepticism,” and enhance their “decision-making” skills.

Promoting Shared Responsibilities in Developing Children’s Early Literacy and Reading Culture in Rwanda

Reading is of paramount importance in the modern era. It is an invaluable tool to instill knowledge in people and lead them to sustainable development. This study aimed to investigate the shared responsibilities of stakeholders in promoting early literacy and reading culture in Rwanda. The study was conducted in five districts in Rwanda, one in each province, including the city of Kigali. This study is conducted within the framework of the Theory of Emergent Literacy (EL) pioneered by Marie Clay (1926–2007) (Rohde, 2015; Teale, 1986; Tracey and Morrow, 2006), according to which literacy development begins very early in life and children’s early reading and writing experiences are of considerable importance in their overall literacy development. The study applied a descriptive research design, which consists of collecting quantitative and qualitative data. The target population was 437,988, which was the total number of households in the five districts. It involved 598 parents in selected households, school administrators, and local authorities. A convenience sampling technique was used to select parents, while a purposive sampling technique was applied to select school administration and local authorities. A questionnaire, interviews, and observation were used as data collection tools. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and thematic analysis. The findings of the study revealed that parents carry out their responsibilities and interactions with children by cultivating a reading culture and reading stories to them before school age. Findings also showed that parents acknowledge teachers’ interactions with children through giving them take-home reading assignments. The strategies that are used to develop early literacy and reading culture include showing pictures, using games and songs, and devoting some hours to reading on specific days in a week. The study identified challenges including parents’ illiteracy and poverty preventing them from being involved in their children’s education, the lack of enough books in schools, and overcrowded classes. It is recommended that government support be increased by making reading materials more accessible to children; that parents’ role in developing the reading culture and early literacy should be more visible; and that there is a need for adult literacy education to enable parents to read to their children and monitor their reading practice.
