Updated ASM Curriculum Guidelines describe core microbiology content to modernize the framework for microbiology education.

Curricular guidelines promote standardized approaches to coverage of essential knowledge and skills in undergraduate education. The American Society for Microbiology (ASM) Curriculum Guidelines for Undergraduate Microbiology were developed in 2012. Continuous, rapid growth of knowledge in science and a dynamic, changing world necessitate updates to these guidelines. As such, ASM formed a task force in the summer of 2022. The task force assessed the 2012 ASM Curriculum Guidelines considering advancements in technology, an understanding of an expanded role of microbes, and a broader scope addressing relevant social and environmental aspects of microbiology. Language in the updated guidelines was also modified to better include eukaryotic microbes, viruses, and other acellular microbes. The task force formed working groups, each aimed at revising specific sections of the 2012 ASM Curriculum Guidelines. The revisions to the ASM Curriculum Guidelines were reviewed by subject matter experts and education stakeholders. Feedback from this peer review was incorporated into the updated guidelines, and further comments were solicited from the ASM Conference of Undergraduate Educators (ASMCUE) attendees in November 2023 before these guidelines were finalized. In this article, we describe the rationale and development of updated ASM Curriculum Guidelines which identify foundational concepts that will serve to improve microbial literacy and that can be expanded upon to address more advanced and specialized topics.

Statement of the problem. The article is devoted to one of the forms of patriotic education of schoolchildren — the holding of the Historical and genealogical Research Competition “My family Tree” and the final Educational and Research Conference «The fate of the family in the fate of the country: the Light of the Great Victory» for students of schools of the cluster of continuing Cossack education, cadet corps and other educational organizations. Regulatory documents. When writing this article, the authors relied on the Strategy for the Development of Education in the Russian Federation for the period up to 2025, approved by Decree of the Government of the Russian Federation dated May 29, 2015 No. 996-R, as well as on the Strategy of State Policy of the Russian Federation in relation to the Russian Cossacks for 2021-2030, approved by Decree of the President of the Russian Federation dated August 9, 2020, No. 505. These Strategies take into account the Constitution of the Russian Federation, Federal laws, Decrees of the President of the Russian Federation, Resolutions of the Government of the Russian Federation, normative legal acts affecting the field of education aimed at protecting children's rights and forming a sense of patriotism among children, involvement in the historical and cultural life of the people and the fate of Russia. In the year of the family, we tried to emphasize the special importance of holding the Contest ”My family Tree”, which shows the role of the family, schools, universities in educating children and youth a sense of patriotism, pride in the Fatherland. The purpose of the article. The article substantiates the effectiveness of using our proposed methodology for conducting historical and genealogical work on this Competition - "My family Tree" with further analysis of the students' works and subsequent exchange of experience at the Conference held annually at the Moscow State University of Technology and Management named after K.G. Razumovsky (PKU) "The fate of the family in the fate of the country: the Light of the Great Victory." Conclusion. According to the authors, such a form of consolidating the results of the Competition is useful not only for students, but also for managers of children's projects.

Critical Reflection Sessions: Teacher's Perspectives During Professional Development

This study aimed to explore the critical reflection experiences of teachers who took part in effective and ineffective professional learning events. It examined the influence of D.A. Kolb's reflective observation stage within the experiential learning theory (ELT) framework on teachers' professional development. Using a qualitative interpretive phenomenological method, the research investigated teachers' viewpoints, beliefs, and experiences related to various professional development activities to evaluate their effectiveness. Eleven teachers attended the same educational conference. The investigation involved semi-structured individual interviews and a focus group discussion. The interview questions centered around the concepts of enactive mastery and vicarious experiences. Open-ended discussions allowed participants to explore their experiences of professional learning. To highlight emergent patterns, this study employed a phenomenological technique to analyze data and identified critical observations through an inductive coding method using the NVivo software. The study's findings suggested that the reflective process necessitated time, collaboration, and structure during professional learning sessions. Moreover, having a group of peers was advantageous for critical reflection. They created a learning environment where support was the norm, and dedicated time encouraged self-reflection, which promoted effective growth in teacher development. The researchers found that inquiry-based professional development promoted introspection and facilitated profound learning. The research emphasized that teachers responded positively when professional development facilitators allowed participants time to link their personal experiences to new teaching methods, prompting reflection and collaboration with peers.

Out-BREAK!: An IDWeek 2023 Escape Room to Break Out of the Educational Mold.

An escape room is a cooperative game that has been adapted into medical education and major academic conferences. We describe the design, development, and implementation of an educational ID-themed escape room activity entitled "Out-BREAK!" at an international conference, IDWeek 2023. An anonymous survey was conducted to collect demographic data, assess participant satisfaction with the escape room puzzles, and gauge participant interest in game-based learning. Thirty escape room sessions were held over 3 days and included 201 participants. Escape room survey respondents (n = 132) were younger and more likely to be trainees compared with in-person IDWeek attendants. Among 131 responses, all respondents enjoyed the experience and would recommend the escape room activity to friends. Survey respondents enjoyed the puzzle solving (93%), medical content (92%), and team building (79%) components. Only 35% of the respondents had ever previously participated in game-based learning; 95% thought the escape room was a valuable teaching method. Among the 72 survey respondents involved in medical education, almost all (90%) said they were interested in incorporating escape rooms into medical education. The Out-BREAK! escape room at IDWeek 2023 was successfully implemented and well received. Despite only a third of participants having prior experience with game-based learning, almost all respondents perceived the escape room to be an effective teaching method.

Teachers’ Quality and Students’ Academic Performance in Osun State Public Senior Secondary Schools, Nigeria

Effective and efficient quality of teachers improves the level of students’ academic performance. This study investigated teachers’ quality and students’ academic performance in Osun State Public Senior Secondary Schools, Nigeria. The objectives of this study were to establish the relationship between teachers’ academic qualifications; teachers’ years of teaching experience; teachers’ professional qualifications and teachers’ exposure to in-service training and students’ academic performance in Osun State Public Senior Secondary Schools. The study adopted a descriptive survey of correlational type. Three hundred respondents were used for the study. Teachers’ Quality Questionnaire” (TQQ) and Students’ Academic Performance Proforma (SAPP) were used for data collection. Five research questions were raised and answered to guide the study's conduct using descriptive statistics of frequency and percentages. Five research hypotheses were formulated and tested using inferential Pearson Product-Moment correlation statistics at 0.05 significance level. Findings showed that teachers’ quality has a positive and significant relationship with students’ academic performance in Osun State Public Secondary Schools, Nigeria. Based on the findings, it was recommended among others that; school management should ensure that teachers yet to register as professionals should be encouraged to do so. This will enable teachers to register with the Teacher Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) and be identified as qualified teachers also endeavours to motivate teachers to attend educational conferences to improve their teaching skills to be effective and efficient.

No room! Of course there’s room

This article is an adaptation of a workshop provocation given at the University of the Arts London (UAL) Education Conference in July 2023, which I set up as an ‘Alice in Wonderland’ ‘Mad Hatter’s’ table. I dressed the table on theme and equipped it with props, as a set to share with fellow educators a focus group project I had undertaken with students on overcrowding in their college art studios. I held up the lack of room in the studios as a social justice issue for exploration, first, as the inflation of numbers and knock-on impact of overcrowding of studios felt by students was acknowledged as result of over-recruitment to the course during and post pandemic; and second, exploring the question of whether minority students are most impacted; including those who are less confident to claim space due to factors such as accessibility, language barriers, financial issues and lack of peer support within the course. By putting workshop participants in the position of taking a seat at a fictional table space, loaded with caricature, I sought to provoke a creative dialogue around positionality and our relationship to shared space, while contemplating anonymised transcripts of the focus group dialogue that had taken place with students around a different table earlier in the academic year. The workshop gave reference to the ideas of Nirmal Puwar regarding positionality and the negotiation of space; and to Mikhail Bakhtin when considering student utterances in the focus group dialogue.

Mohandas Gandhi and the uses of Esperanto

Abstract In the vast literature that deals with Mohandas Gandhi, very little attention has been paid to his opinions on questions of language. This essay studies Gandhi’s use of the international auxiliary language, Esperanto, as a negative example of a way to find a common language. Gandhi was willing and able to collaborate with Esperantists. And yet, Esperanto was repeatedly invoked by Gandhi in order to attack it as an utopian ideal irrelevant in Indian contexts. Gandhi’s arguments against Esperanto established the rejection of an internationalism of which he perceived Esperanto to be a part. His rejection of Esperanto as an artificially constructed language is integral to his failure to acknowledge Hindi’s artificial construction and imposition in South Indian contexts. The Gandhi-led All Indian Education Conference at Wardha (1937) is situated in this essay, therefore, within a wider context of linguistic parochialisms.

Phenomenological Study of English Language Teachers in Pakistan

English language education in Pakistan holds significant importance, serving as both a medium of instruction and communication. Firstly, the study seeks to identify the professional traits; secondly, to explore the opportunities for professional development, available to English language teachers; and thirdly, the research seeks by addressing these objectives, this research contributes to a deeper understanding of the complexities surrounding English language teaching in the Pakistani context and offers valuable insights for enhancing teaching effectiveness and teachers’ competency. The study was qualitative in nature. Population of the study were all teachers those are serving on post graduate level. The researcher selected 30 participants for the research study. For the collection of data researcher constructed the interview according to the objectives of the study. Researcher conducted the interview of the participants. By using thematic analysis, the researcher analyzed the data and the results of the study indicated that majority of participant reported that effective English teachers have good verbal and written communication skills, which allow them to convey complex concepts and ideas clearly and understandably. Furthermore, they used group activities, discussions, and projects that engage students and encourage them to take ownership of their learning. Majority of participants reported that technological proficiency is one of their salient features. Incorporating technology into the teaching process can enhances engagement and provides access to a wealth of online resources. It helps the students to take part in classroom activities effectively. Additionally, most of the ELTs mentioned that various educational activities such as workshops to train the teachers for curriculum development and assessment techniques can be helpful for English language teachers. Enhancement of professional skills among English teachers will play an important role to promote English Language in Pakistan. Teacher may have the discussion and exchange the ideas for better teaching in English Language Teaching Workshops, conferences, and seminars.

Crowdsourced Feedback to Improve Resident Physician Error Disclosure Skills

Residents must prepare for effective communication with patients after medical errors. The video-based communication assessment (VCA) is software that plays video of a patient scenario, asks the physician to record what they would say, engages crowdsourced laypeople to rate audio recordings of physician responses, and presents feedback to physicians. To evaluate the effectiveness of VCA feedback in resident error disclosure skill training. This single-blinded, randomized clinical trial was conducted from July 2022 to May 2023 at 7 US internal medicine and family medicine residencies (10 total sites). Participants were second-year residents attending required teaching conferences. Data analysis was performed from July to December 2023. Residents completed 2 VCA cases at time 1 and were randomized to the intervention, an individual feedback report provided in the VCA application after 2 weeks, or to control, in which feedback was not provided until after time 2. Residents completed 2 additional VCA cases after 4 weeks (time 2). Panels of crowdsourced laypeople rated recordings of residents disclosing simulated medical errors to create scores on a 5-point scale. Reports included learning points derived from layperson comments. Mean time 2 ratings were compared to test the hypothesis that residents who had access to feedback on their time 1 performance would score higher at time 2 than those without feedback access. Residents were surveyed about demographic characteristics, disclosure experience, and feedback use. The intervention's effect was examined using analysis of covariance. A total of 146 residents (87 [60.0%] aged 25-29 years; 60 female [41.0%]) completed the time 1 VCA, and 103 (70.5%) completed the time 2 VCA (53 randomized to intervention and 50 randomized to control); of those, 28 (54.9%) reported reviewing their feedback. Analysis of covariance found a significant main effect of feedback between intervention and control groups at time 2 (mean [SD] score, 3.26 [0.45] vs 3.14 [0.39]; difference, 0.12; 95% CI, 0.08-0.48; P = .01). In post hoc comparisons restricted to residents without prior disclosure experience, intervention residents scored higher than those in the control group at time 2 (mean [SD] score, 3.33 [0.43] vs 3.09 [0.44]; difference, 0.24; 95% CI, 0.01-0.48; P = .007). Worse performance at time 1 was associated with increased likelihood of dropping out before time 2 (odds ratio, 2.89; 95% CI, 1.06-7.84; P = .04). In this randomized clinical trial, self-directed review of crowdsourced feedback was associated with higher ratings of internal medicine and family medicine residents' error disclosure skill, particularly for those without real-life error disclosure experience, suggesting that such feedback may be an effective way for residency programs to address their requirement to prepare trainees for communicating with patients after medical harm. A Virtual Multi-institution Pediatric Radiology Peer Teaching Conference Improves Knowledge of Educators

Rationale and ObjectivesMedical education led by peers and near-peers has been shown to benefit both teachers and learners and can be successfully incorporated into radiology education. The authors created a virtual, multi-institution pediatric radiology conference employing peer and near-peer teaching with the goals of improving radiology knowledge and enhancing the educational experience of radiology trainees. Materials and MethodsTwo radiology residency programs implemented a common pediatric radiology curriculum and joint quarterly virtual peer teaching conference. Conferences featured short teaching sessions led by six to ten radiology trainees and were facilitated by attending pediatric radiologists. Knowledge assessments (KA) consisting of multiple-choice questions inspired by conference learning objectives were sent to peer educators before the conference (pre-conference), directly after the conference (immediate post-conference), and three months after the conference (delayed post-conference). Surveys were distributed to peer educators immediately after conferences to assess conference reception and solicit feedback. Quantitative data was analyzed using ANOVA, Kruskal-Wallis test, and post-hoc Tukey HSD test. ResultsFour conferences featured 33 peer educators consisting primarily of first-year (60.6 %), second-year (18.2 %), and third-year (15.2 %) radiology residents. Compared to pre-conference scores, immediate post-conference scores were significantly increased (HSD 13, p = 0.02) and delayed post-conference scores were increased without statistical significance (HSD 5.8, p = 0.29). Almost all survey respondents perceived the conferences as helpful, well-organized, and effective in teaching pediatric radiology. A majority of participants expressed interest in participating in future peer teaching radiology conferences. ConclusionA virtual pediatric radiology peer and near-peer teaching conference held between two radiology residencies improved short-term radiology knowledge of educators and was highly received.

Research on the Cultivation of Primary School Chinese Core Literacy from the Perspective of Information Technology Media

In 2024, Huai Jinpeng, secretary of the Party Group and Minister of the Ministry of Education, pointed out in his speech at the National Education Conference that we should "strengthen the reform and innovation of education and teaching, and constantly explore and practice new teaching methods and means". Nowadays, cultivating primary school students' Chinese core quality has become an important direction of primary school Chinese classroom reform, the core of which lies in cultivating students' individual cognition and application ability of Chinese. Based on this, this paper breaks down the cultivation concept of primary Chinese core quality into individualized learning orientation, teaching orientation of students' subjectivity and feedback mode of multiple evaluation. The paper deeply integrates the use of information technology media with primary school Chinese teaching, and puts forward the cultivation mode of primary school Chinese core quality under the vision of information technology media. This model includes three parts: deep interaction of teaching and research, flipped classroom learning model, multiple evaluation and intelligent data management, in order to help the reform of the primary school Chinese core literacy training model.

Interrogating Kinesiology from Above and Below: Højskole Pedagogy, Praxis and Bodily Democracy

ABSTRACT This paper, based on the Praxis Lecture I delivered at the National Association of Kinesiology in Higher Education Conference in January 2024, articulates how my experiences at a Danish gymnastic folkehøjskole (folk high school) and højskole pedagogy inform my teaching and service. After defining højskole pedagogy, I discuss how I incorporate its elements to promote greater inclusion, equity, and diversity in kinesiology, particularly around (dis)ability and body size. Højskole pedagogy also provides a way to encourage students to embody their learning and learn about their bodies through course content and experiential lessons. I dedicate this article to Dr. Seymour (Sy) Kleinman, my advisor and mentor, who tirelessly championed human movement as the foundation of kinesiology. He emphasized the importance of teaching, exploring, performing, and experiencing human movement, particularly in the context of increasing efforts to by those within and outside kinesiology to scientize and subdivide the field.

Developing and delivering a migraine disparities and diagnosis undergraduate medical educational program to underrepresented in medicine medical student members of the Student National Medical Association: A pilot project.

Migraine is underdiagnosed. On average, medical students have approximately 3 h of exposure to headache education throughout medical school training. Moreover, some medical students have racially-based biases in pain. There is a paucity of underrepresented in medicine (UIM) headache practitioners. UIM practitioners are more likely to practice in underserved communities and provider-patient ethnic concordance may help eliminate healthcare disparities. The Student National Medical Association (SNMA) is an organization committed to supporting current and future UIM medical students and addressing the needs of underserved communities. The goal of this project was to develop and deliver a brief Migraine Diagnosis and Disparities Undergraduate Medical Education Program (MD2UMEP) to increase awareness of migraine diagnosis and disparities in UIM medical students in the SNMA. For connecting/relationship-building with SNMA, the SNMA Region V website was reviewed. Calls were made to Wayne State University School of Medicine (WSUSOM) Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (ODEI) explaining the educational initiative with subsequent emails to the Director of WSUSOM's ODEI followed by a video-conference meeting (VCM). VCMs were conducted with two SNMA member leaders from WSUSOM. A local and regional presentation/delivery of the MD2UMEP was planned. Communication was maintained electronically. For development/delivery of the MD2UMEP, headache literature was reviewed for key concepts underpinning migraine diagnosis and migraine disparities with a focus on African Americans. Slides with talking points were developed with references. Pre- and posttest questions were drafted and made accessible via a QR code. The MD2UMEP was presented and students completed the questionnaires. Descriptive statistics were used to quantify responses. The MD2UMEP work began July 31, 2021, with program delivered in final form on October 1, 2022. A professional relationship was established with SNMA leadership. A MD2UMEP was developed then administered at the 2022 SNMA Region V Medical Education Conference. Headache medicine was introduced to UIM SNMA medical students. Anonymously, nine individuals responded to the MD2UMEP pretest questions. Eight individuals answered the posttest questions. At the program's conclusion, UIM student performance improved on seven of 10 test questions on migraine diagnosis and disparities and remained at 100% on one of 10 test questions. On two of the questions, the number correct remained the same (although percentage overall increased due to the smaller denominator). There was a higher proportion of correct responses on the posttest. There is great need for migraine diagnosis and disparities education among medical students. A new migraine diagnosis and disparities program was developed for medical students. SNMA members were receptive to the MD2UMEP and it strengthened their knowledge of migraine diagnosis and disparities. This program exposed UIM medical students to headache medicine.

Global impact of a virtual neurology morning report

The global shortage and inequitable distribution of neurologists has led to significant gaps not only in neurology care, but also in neurology education. In order to increase access to neurology education, we developed neurology virtual morning report (NVMR), a virtual, open-access, case-based clinical reasoning conference available to learners worldwide. To evaluate NVMR's impact on participants' perception of, interest in, and confidence in neurology, we conducted a survey. Respondents represented 25 different countries of various income levels. The majority of respondents reported that NVMR decreased their perception of difficulty in understanding neurology and increased confidence in various clinical reasoning domains in neurology. Additionally, the majority of medical student participants showed an increased interest in pursuing neurology as a future specialty after participating in NVMR. NVMR represents a potential model for virtual educational conferences and highlights the opportunities digital education has to improve equitable access to neurology education.

Mapping Evidence in Teaching Palliative Care in Undergraduate Curriculum of Healthcare Professionals Qualification: A Systematic Scoping Review Protocol.

Clinical Practice Guidelines recommend interprofessional collaboration in palliative care. However, healthcare profession educators lack clear curricular guidance, particularly for undergraduate programs, to adequately train future professionals for effective participation in such teams. This systematic scoping review protocol aims to address this gap by: (i) mapping evidence on key characteristics of teaching palliative and end-of-life (EOL) care to undergraduate healthcare and social care students, and (ii) identifying the nature and effectiveness of educational interventions for improving palliative care education in the undergraduate curriculum. The protocol adheres to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Protocol Extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-P-ScR) guidelines, while the proposed systematic scoping review study will be conducted based on methods and steps identified by Arksey and O'Malley and experts in the field. We will conduct systematic searches across five EBSCOhost databases using relevant search terms. Additionally, a limited grey literature search will be conducted on the first 100 results of Google Scholar and Open-Grey. The selection process will follow PRISMA-Extension for Scoping Reviews. Two independent reviewers will screen titles and abstracts for eligibility. Data extraction will be done on standardized forms in duplicate with cross-checking by a third reviewer. Braun and Clarke's thematic analysis approach, combining thematic and directed content analysis, will be employed for analysis. Intervention effectiveness will be narratively summarized based on the TIDieR checklist. Meta-analysis will be considered if applicable and data is homogeneous. Palliative care education (PCE) is a crucial element of undergraduate health professions education. This study's findings may aid educators in fostering optimal learning among healthcare students, who can then positively influence community health outcomes. The protocol was submitted for ethical clearance to the University of KwaZulu-Natal's Biomedical Research Ethics Committee and granted exemption from ethics review (00024289). We will disseminate findings through scientific journal publication and by sharing a summary with relevant institutions and attendees at health promotion and interprofessional education conferences.

Antimicrobial Stewardship Practice Changes Following a Statewide Educational Conference in Nebraska

Background: In 2023, Nebraska held its 4th state antimicrobial stewardship (AS) educational conference, an annual one-day in-person event with continuing education offered for nurses, pharmacists, microbiology lab technicians, and physicians. One challenge of educational events is determining if content has been translated into practice. We sought to assess AS-related practice changes implemented by conference attendees. Methods: Conference attendees were sent 2 surveys by email following the conference. Survey 1 questions were integrated into the continuing education credit evaluation immediately following the conference. Survey 2 was sent three months later to all registered attendees. Qualitative responses were grouped by theme and descriptive statistics were used to evaluate Results: There were 203 attendees from across the state including a diverse group of learners (Table 1) representing metropolitan and rural areas of Nebraska (Figure 1) from acute care hospitals, critical access hospitals, long-term care settings, and public health. A total of 148 attendees (73%) answered questions in Survey 1 (Table 2), and 79 (39%) attendees responded to Survey 2. On Survey 1, 94% of respondents indicated that they intended to make practice changes, though 60% anticipated barriers including further staff training needs and lack of resources and health system support. On Survey 2, 83% of respondents indicated successful implementation of practice changes at three months after the conference. The most common practice changes included enhanced communication strategies, improved antibiotic tracking, monitoring, and review, policy and procedure updates, and AS tool implementation. On Survey 1, 26% (35/131) strongly agreed that their ability to treat patients was adequate prior to the conference; this increased to 55% (72/131) post-conference. On Survey 2, 56% (22/39) of respondents reported improvement in patient outcomes because of implemented practice changes following conference attendance. However, some also mentioned a short follow-up survey timeline as a limitation in assessing patient outcome improvements. Reported outcomes included improved receptiveness from providers, patients, and families to antibiotic use recommendations, shorter prescribed durations, and more appropriate initial antibiotic selection. Improved team performance was noted by 73% (27/37) of respondents. Themes included improved communication with internal and external stakeholders, more collaborative team discussions, increased confidence in recommendations, expanded provider and staff engagement, and increased leadership involvement. Conclusions: In addition to improved knowledge and understanding for a variety of AS-related areas, attendees of the conference also reported a high rate of practice changes that led to perceived improvements in patient outcomes and team function.

Exploring 40 years of Korean medical education conference themes.

The Korean Society of Medical Education (KSME) was founded in 1983 and celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2023. This study examines the evolution of topics discussed at KSME conferences from 1971 through 2023, highlighting shifts in the focus of medical education. We analyzed 90 KSME conferences over 5 decades (1970s, 1980s, 1990s, 2000s, and 2010s), categorizing the topics into three eras based on emerging themes and continuity. Consequently, 37 topics covered at the conference were categorized. Ten topics continuously appeared from the 1970s to the 2010s, including future directions of medical education, teaching methods, faculty development, and curriculum. The topics from the 1970s to the 1990s included 14 areas, such as medical education evaluation, non-undergraduate curriculum, community-related, and research. Thirteen new topics emerged after the 2000s, such as social accountability, student support, professionalism, and quality improvements. The most common topics under innovations in medical education, a case of curriculum innovation at universities that began after 2000, were clinical clerkship, curriculum development, and medical humanities. KSME's selection of conference topics has been strategically aligned with societal needs and the evolving landscape of medical education. Future topics should continue to address relevant societal and educational challenges.
