1. Responses of smooth muscle from the edges of pulmonary septa and from the lung wall of Bufo marinus were studied separately. 2. Adrenaline caused contraction of septal edge muscle and relaxation of lung wall muscle; both responses involved α-adrenoceptors. 3. Sympathetic nerve stimulation caused contraction followed by relaxation of the intact lung; contraction was more marked in, and sometimes the only response of, septal edge muscle. 4. A role of the sympathetic in regulating pulmonary gas exchange is discussed.
