Drones and Technopreneurship in Malaysia: Unlocking the Economic Potential of Drones in Built Environment Development

Drones, with diverse technological capabilities, are poised to revolutionise various traditional tasks, particularly in-built environment development while driving economic growth, innovation, and job creation. Within the Malaysian context, drones have evolved beyond recreational use to become sophisticated unmanned aerial vehicles with untapped business potential. Against this backdrop, this paper explores a comprehensive review of drone development in Malaysia. Using a multidisciplinary approach, the review includes selected publication data from academic journals and online media published between 2018 and 2023, complemented with insights gathered from expert interviews. Aiming to bridge the discursive gap surrounding emerging drone technologies, the review focuses on identifying patterns and trends in recent Malaysian publications on drone applications, as well as understanding current issues related to its technology adoption. The thematic findings reveal a notable surge in interest in drone-related publications and draw clear connections between drone applications and diverse industrial sectors over the past six years. The paper emphasises critical issues such as community acceptance, the transforming landscape of business, diverse industry applications of drone technology, and government strategies for advancing drone technology. As a preliminary study, this paper establishes the foundation for leveraging the benefits of drone technology within the broader context of the built environment, social, and economic landscape. By shedding light on the evolving drone ecosystem in Malaysia, the paper contributes to fostering informed discussions and strategic initiatives in the integration and advancement of drone technologies. Thus, it offers valuable insights for professionals, economists, engineers, policymakers, and researchers alike.

Harnessing nature-based solutions for economic recovery: A systematic review

Nature-based solutions (NbS) involve working with nature to address societal challenges in ways that benefit communities and biodiversity locally. However, their role supporting economic recovery from crises, such as those arising from conflicts or pandemics remains underexplored. To address this knowledge gap, we conducted a systematic review of 66 reviews on the economic impact of nature-based interventions. Most demonstrated positive outcomes for income and employment, though those with critical appraisal of underlying studies reported more mixed outcomes. These varied results were influenced by factors such as the balance between short-term and long-term gains, market conditions, regional effects, reliance on subsidies, and discrepancies between expected and actual economic benefits. National-scale economic growth assessments were scarce. Half of the cases featured nature-based food production investments, with much evidence from sub-Saharan Africa, East Asia and the Pacific. The few reviews comparing NbS with alternatives found that NbS delivered equal or better economic outcomes. NbS also provided broader benefits like food and water security, flood protection and community empowerment. We identified key factors influencing the delivery of benefits and trade-offs, finding that NbS must adhere to best practice standards, with community involvement being critical for equitable outcomes. Well-designed NbS can create diverse job opportunities at different skill levels, diversify income, and improve resilience, offering a rapid, flexible response to economic shocks that can be targeted at deprived communities. By integrating traditional, local and scientific knowledge, NbS can enable eco-innovation, and drive the transition to a clean and efficient circular economy, with high economic multipliers spreading benefits throughout economies. The evidence underscores the need to incorporate NbS in investment programs to concurrently address economic, environmental, and societal challenges. However, improved monitoring of economic, social and ecological outcomes and the development of comprehensive accounting systems are needed to better track public and private investments in NbS.

The Welsh Health Equity Solutions Platform – a mechanism for health equity solutions

Abstract Health inequities are a longstanding issue in Wales, as they are across the globe. They disproportionately affect the health and wellbeing outcomes of disadvantaged groups, restricting opportunities to live full and prosperous lives. Post COVID-19 new groups are emerging with disproportionately higher risk of poor health and premature death and disease, especially those with unmet needs and vulnerabilities, with the rising cost of living amplifying health inequities. Despite their prevalence, health inequities are avoidable. Efforts to reduce health inequities require action on all the social determinants of health across the life course. Improved understanding of the key drivers of health gaps is needed to address the problem and provide support for solutions-driven action to break down the barriers to health equity. The Welsh Health Equity Solutions Platform (WHESP) launched on 22nd June 2023, a collaboration between Public Health Wales, Welsh Government and WHO European Office for Investment in Health and Development. The WHESP is an innovative digital tool developed around the WHO Health Equity Status Report initiative framework of the ‘five essential conditions’ for healthy, prosperous lives for all. It is a mechanism for health equity solutions and aims to inform and facilitate policy and decision making to improve population health and address the increasing health gap through an online gateway to data, health economics, policies, and innovative health equity tools. Emerging evidence is highlighted to identify solutions for achieving healthy equity, which informs evidence-based decision making to reduce the health gap, improve overall population health and wellbeing, and achieve inclusive and sustainable economic growth and prosperity for all. Collating and sharing health equity solutions, evidence, data and best practice both across Wales and globally supports equitable, long-term action to improve the health and wellbeing of the population. Key messages • Highlighting health equity solutions informs best practice on tackling health inequalities. • WHESP provides extensive evidence to facilitate cross-sectoral action and policy change.

Sustainable Urban Tourism Development in Doha: Balancing Economic Growth and Environmental Stewardship

This study investigates the development of sustainable urban tourism in Doha, Qatar, with a focus on balancing economic growth and environmental stewardship. The research explores the integration of sustainable practices within Doha’s tourism sector, the implementation of key policies such as the Qatar National Vision 2030, and the impact of the FIFA World Cup 2022 on tourism and sustainability efforts. Using a mixed-methods approach, including qualitative interviews with 30 key stakeholders and quantitative data analysis, the findings reveal that while Doha has made substantial progress in areas such as resource management and green infrastructure development, challenges remain—particularly in retrofitting older buildings and enforcing sustainability standards. The FIFA World Cup 2022 acted as a catalyst for sustainable practices, but the long-term success of these efforts depends on continued investment and policy enforcement. This study provides valuable insights for policymakers, urban planners, and tourism officials working to promote sustainable urban tourism in rapidly developing cities.

Progressing towards personalised medicine: the Genomic Data Infrastructure (GDI) project

Abstract Funded by the European Commission under the Digital Europe Programme and through co-funding from participating Member States, the European Genomic Data Infrastructure (GDI) aims to support the 1+Million Genome initiative for establishing an effective data infrastructure for genomic data. GDI has the potential to fill the gap between genomic research and clinical practice, promoting the implementation of data-driven precision medicine in Europe with the harmonisation of genomic and related phenotypic and clinical data across adhering countries. Launched in November 2022, the GDI project is a collaborative effort involving partners from 20 European countries, divided into 8 Work Packages across three Pillars. GDI is structured with the development of a framework (Pillar I Long-term sustainability) and the necessary tools (Pillar II 1+MG infrastructure deployment), with the implementations of use cases (Pillar III Application and innovation solution) to support research and innovation, integrate findings into the clinic and healthcare, and improve public health measures. In the first 2 years, we completed the starter kit which we are currently testing with real data. Over the subsequent years, the GDI project aims to provide a federated and sustainable infrastructure for facilitating research that use genomic data. Through authorized secure access, clinicians and researchers can leverage genomic insights for faster and more precise clinical decision-making, diagnosis, and treatments. The GDI project represents a significant opportunity to improve healthcare outcomes and public health measures by leveraging the potential of genomics. By providing secure access to extensive genomic datasets combined with phenotyped data, the infrastructure sets the foundation for international partnerships in personalized medicine. Ultimately, this initiative holds the promise of advancing medical understanding, enhancing patient care, and fostering economic growth across Europe. Bridging the Skills Gap Through Education Supply Chain to Meet Industry Requirements

In Bangladesh, a persistent mismatch exists between the skills fresh graduates possess and the competencies demanded by employers. This gap affects graduate employability and hampers economic growth. This article explores how key components— Program Curriculum Development (PCD), Instructor Portfolio Management (IPM), University Culture and Networking Platform (UCN), and University Facilities (UF)—can collectively address this issue. By integrating these elements into the educational supply chain, universities can produce skilled graduates who are better equipped to meet industry needs. The proposed framework offers a comprehensive approach to align academic outputs with labor market demands. The study highlights the importance of adapting curricula, engaging industry professionals in teaching, fostering strong university-industry connections, and investing in modern facilities to close the skills gap. This holistic approach ensures that graduates are employable, contributing to national development and societal betterment. The article concludes by emphasizing the need for further research on technological advancements and policy reforms to enhance higher education in Bangladesh.

Politics and city growth in Italy: Do connections matter?

AbstractIn this paper, I assess the existence of a political connection premium for Italian municipalities during the so-called “Second Republic” (1991–2011). The early 1990s witnessed a seminal event in Italian political history with the “Mani Pulite” (“Clean Hands”) investigation following the fall of the Berlin Wall. Subsequently, major political parties dissolved, culminating in a bipolar political landscape characterized by cyclical alternation between center-right and center-left factions (extending until at least 2011). Exploiting population data on small and medium-sized Italian municipalities between 1991 and 2011, I found that “politically connected” municipalities showed a population premium of about 2.5% compared to “non-politically connected” ones. The results are robust to NUTS-3 fixed effects, to a comprehensive set of controls, and to a full set of robustness checks. The relationship is confirmed using aggregate municipal income data as an additional proxy of local economic growth. Over and above this, social capital and the quality of local institutions seem to play a pivotal role in enabling the political connection. Election-related checks suggest the connection as two-way: using municipal data from the 2013 and 2018 general elections, I found that the treated municipalities depicted a higher turnout and fewer populist votes.

Future patterns of health inequalities in the population of England to 2040: a microsimulation study

Abstract Introduction The existence of wide inequalities in health across England is well-documented. Our research adds to this evidence on inequalities in self-reported health by describing current patterns and projecting future patterns of inequality in diagnosed illness across multiple conditions by deprivation. Methods We used the IMPACTNCD microsimulation model that simulates a close-to-reality synthetic population of adults in England from 2019 to 2040. This model combines individual-level data on demographics, health and mortality from linked administrative data for primary and secondary care with survey responses on individual-level risk factors and epidemiological evidence on the associations between risk factors and chronic illness. This model can be adapted for other countries based on data availability. We used the Cambridge Multimorbidity Score (CMS) as our multimorbidity measure. This assigns a weight to 20 common long-term conditions based on individuals’ healthcare use and their likelihood of death. We further focus on “major illness” which corresponds to a CMS greater than 1.5. Results In preliminary results, we project that health inequalities are not projected to improve between 2019 and 2040. In 2019, the difference in the average time spent without major illness between the most and least deprived 10% of areas in England was 10.4 years. This is projected to remain largely unchanged at 10.7 years (8.8, 11.7). We also find that in 2019, the share of working age people living with major illness in the most deprived 10% of areas in England (14.6%) was more than double the rate seen in the least deprived 10% of areas (6.3%). In 2040, we project these rates to remain largely unchanged at 15.2% (13.0%, 17.6%) and 6.8% (5.4%, 9.1%) respectively. Discussion On current trends, health inequalities are projected to persist into the future. This has significant implications not just for population health but for labour supply and wider economic growth. Key messages • If current trends in risk factors continue into the future, existing wide inequalities in diagnosed illness in England are projected to persist onto 2040. • With significant disparities in major illness among the working-age population, this has implications not just for population health but for labour supply and wider economic growth.

The potential of EU policies for achieving wellbeing economies

Abstract The environmental crisis, growing levels of social inequalities and rising levels of non-communicable diseases are all symptoms of economic systems that are failing to generate wellbeing. There is increasing support for the notion that addressing these crises requires shifting the focus from economic growth to a broader range of measures that reflect wellbeing, through more comprehensive, consistent and integrated policy approaches to deliver this. This presentation explores to what extent the concept of the Wellbeing Economy is being applied at the EU level, by tracking changes in some of the EU’s key policies and strategies over the past 10 years and in the Semester process, as a mechanism to implement them. It concludes that while progress towards more integrated policy approaches have been made, it is limited by the continuing emphasis on economic, over other policy areas. Recommendations will be made for an even more comprehensive EU Strategy that enables policy sectors to deliver wellbeing objectives in a more coordinated manner and on how to ensure health and wellbeing remain on policy-making agendas.

The Impact of Government Expenditure on Economic Growth in Malaysia

This study experimentally investigates the relationship between economic growth and government spending in Malaysia from 1990 to 2022 using time series data. The study analyzes the impact of total government spending on economic growth, covering housing, healthcare, social services, military, and education while identifying which sector has the most effect on economic growth. The Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) method is employed to evaluate the effects of these expenditures. The findings demonstrate that, in the short run, all variables significantly affect economic growth, hence refuting the null hypothesis. However, only trade openness and labor spending positively impact long-term economic growth. Research indicates that housing and education expenditures are the primary long-term drivers of economic growth in Malaysia. The data suggest that the Malaysian economy contradicts the Keynesian theory, as less government spending appears to improve the real GDP growth rate. The inverse relationship between government spending and economic growth indicates that government expenditure may not be the primary catalyst for economic growth, hence supporting Wagner’s law. These findings provide policymakers with essential insights for optimizing government spending to improve economic development results.

The Role of Government Health Expenditure in Driving Economic Growth: Evidence from OECD Countries

This study examines the influence of government health expenditure and life expectancy on economic growth. The study makes use of panel data analysis and utilizes data from the OECD nations between 2000 and 2021. The study applies panel data analysis using POLS, FEM and REM models and dynamic GMM models. The study also gauges the moderating role of life expectancy on the relationship between government health expenditure and economic growth. The results indicate that government expenditure on health hurts economic growth. A detrimental relationship between life expectancy and economic growth indicates that higher life expectancy could result in elevated healthcare and financial expenses. Nevertheless, the interactive regression model suggests that there is no significant moderation of the association between government expenditure on health and economic growth by life expectancy, implying that the influence of government health expenditure on economic growth is generally unaffected by demographic changes. These findings emphasize the significance of differentiating between the short-term and long-term economic consequences of healthcare expenditure. This study offers insights into the optimization of public spending in OECD nations to promote sustainable economic growth and enhance public health outcomes.

Manufacturing production as a source of growth: the case of Portugal

The aim of this paper is to test the relationship between manufacturing production and economic growth in Portugal from the 1950s to the present day, following Nicholas Kaldor’s (1908–1986) thinking, which assumes that manufacturing is the true engine of the economic activity of a country. By estimating a series of econometric models, including a Vector Autoregressive (VAR) model, it was possible to identify a positive relationship between growth and manufacturing production since the 1950s. The results also show that each increase of 1 percentage point (pp) in real growth rate of the production of basic metallurgical industries and manufacture of metallic products in a certain year t−1 for the period 1956–2019, caused an increase of 0.07 pp in the Portuguese economic growth during a following year t on average. We hope that these findings will stimulate new and interesting research regarding the important issues of manufacturing production and economic growth.

Examining The Impact of Macroeconomics Factors on Carbon Emissions in Selected 7-ASEAN Members: A Panel Data Analysis

This study investigates the relationships between urbanization, economic growth, energy consumption, transportation, and carbon emissions in seven ASEAN countries from 2011 to 2022. As released by the World Health Organization (WHO), more than 80 percent of the world’s population living in urban areas were exposed to air quality levels that were above the WHO limits. The region that is most affected comes from those nations categorized as low to middle-income countries. Hence, it is best to examine why these 7 ASEAN nations categorized from the lower to upper-middle income countries are not able to control the increase in the level of their carbon emissions. The analysis would also identify the appropriate empirical model suitable for the data. Using panel data analysis applying econometric modeling which are the Pooled Ordinary Least Square, Fixed Effects Model, and Random Effects Model, the findings support the Environmental Kuznets Curve hypothesis, revealing that urbanization and economic growth significantly increase carbon emissions. The study emphasizes the need for renewable energy adoption and sustainable urban planning to reduce carbon footprints. Key recommendations include enhancing energy efficiency and promoting cleaner transportation technologies to achieve sustainable economic growth in the ASEAN region.

The synergy of renewable energy consumption, green technology, and environmental quality: Designing sustainable development goals policies

AbstractGreen technology (GT) and the utilization of renewable energy (RE) are widely acknowledged as a catalyst for energy efficiency, economic growth, and a tool for combating environmental degradation. Although various studies have examined the ecological repercussions of these two improvements, they have primarily used traditional pollution indicators (namely, carbon emissions and ecological footprint) and ignored nations with the highest cleaner energy adoption. To bridge this gap, the present research seeks to analyze the relationship between GT, RE consumption, economic growth, trade, and load capacity factor in the top‐10 renewable economies. In addition to environmental pollution indicators, the study utilizes the load capacity factor as a novel proxy for environmental quality and investigates the load capacity curve hypothesis using the Cross‐sectional‐autoregressive distributed lag model from 1990 to 2021. According to the empirical findings, all explanatory variables have a significant long‐term effect on the load capacity. More precisely, GT and RE consumption contribute to the sustainability of the ecosystem, while trade increases the ecological deficit. Furthermore, the findings do not support the validity of the load capacity curve hypothesis, implying that the environmental restorative benefits of economic well‐being may not manifest in the latter stages of economic growth. Given these findings, policymakers in the top‐10 renewable economies should seize the environmental prospects offered by GT and RE and update trade and growth policies in a way that promotes biocapacity while simultaneously reducing the ecological footprint to reach the long‐term sustainable development goals (SDGs), particularly SDGs 7 and 13.

Is taxation a curse or a blessing? The case of Turkiye

This study aims to reveal whether taxes are blessings or curses based on the distinction between direct and indirect taxes. As in the past, taxation is an indispensable instrument of government policy in today’s modern state administration models. Since taxation is an inevitable phenomenon, designing an effective and efficient tax policy is an important decision process in economic development. This study will serve as a source for formulating an effective fiscal policy. Within the scope of the study, 1998/Q1 period and 2023/Q2 quarterly data for Turkiye are used. The tax curse hypothesis is analyzed using Prais-Winsten and Cumulative Fourier-frequency Toda & Yamamoto Test methods. In addition, the long-run performance of the relationship between the variables used in the model was evaluated by Wavelet Transform Coherence (WTC) analysis. The results of the analysis reveal that direct taxes have a negative impact on economic growth and thus the tax curse hypothesis is valid, while there is no tax curse in terms of indirect taxes. The study also reveals that direct taxes have a devastating effect in economies that are in the middle of the economic growth process and have a high growth rate, but this effect is not permanent and disappears after a while. The results are important in terms of guiding the formulation of government policies and the formulation of effective tax policies, especially for developing countries.

The Determinants of Monetary Policy in Malaysia: Impact on Economic Activity

The overnight interbank rate is a key tool for central banks to influence economic activity and maintain financial stability. It represents the rate at which banks lend and borrow short-term funds from one another, often overnight, and plays a crucial role in monetary policy transmission. Changes in this rate can affect borrowing costs and credit availability, which in turn impacts consumption, investment, and economic activity. Bank Negara Malaysia (2021) highlights that overnight transactions in the interbank market operate alongside the Kuala Lumpur Interbank Offered Rate (KLIBOR). This study analyzes time series data from 1991 to 2021 to identify relationships between the overnight interbank rate and macroeconomic variables using the ordinary least square (OLS) method. The analysis focuses on unemployment (UR), domestic private credit (DGR), gross domestic product (GDP), foreign exchange reserves (FER), and inflation (I), with data sourced from the World Bank and the Federal Reserve Bank (FRED). The results show that unemployment and inflation significantly impact monetary policy. High unemployment suggests underused resources, often prompting lower interest rates to stimulate investment and economic growth. In contrast, rising inflation typically leads central banks to increase interest rates to slow spending, while falling inflation may result in rate cuts to spur economic activity.

Determinants of Inflation Rate Fluctuations in Five ASEAN Nations

This paper examines the key relationships between independent variables and inflation fluctuations in the ASEAN-5 countries, which include Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, and the Philippines. Using annual data from 2001 to 2020, a static panel data regression model is employed. The empirical results reveal that at least two independent variables significantly impact inflation rates in these five ASEAN nations. Specifically, the unemployment rate has a significant negative correlation with inflation fluctuations, while economic growth shows a significant positive correlation. Overall, this study provides valuable insights into how exchange rate determinants influence inflation fluctuations, highlighting the importance of balanced policies to address the interactions between unemployment, economic growth, and inflation.

Energy Consumption, Emission, Transportation Sector in Malaysia: Review on Malaysia’s Road Transport

Transportation is a major challenge for energy conservation, with road transport in Malaysia being a significant contributor to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. In Malaysia, traditional fossil fuels such as gasoline and diesel dominate the transportation sector, which has become the second-largest source of GHG emissions, accounting for 20% in 2014. This increase in CO2 emissions, driven by rising vehicle ownership and economic growth, underscores the urgent need for effective emission reduction strategies. The rapid growth in road transportation in Malaysia is linked to socioeconomic factors, including rising incomes and urbanization, leading to higher energy consumption and pollution. Data indicates a significant increase in vehicle registrations from 1990 to 2018, with motorcars and motorcycles being the most common. This growth, fueled by subsidies and decentralization, has exacerbated the sector’s environmental impact. The Green Technology Master Plan Malaysia 2017–2040 aims to address these issues by setting ambitious targets to enhance renewable energy, improve energy efficiency, and promote eco-friendly fuels. Key strategies include expanding public transportation, increasing the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs), and introducing alternative fuels like hydrogen. Malaysia has substantial potential to reduce CO2 emissions through initiatives such as expanding EV infrastructure, promoting natural gas vehicles, and improving public transit. Effective implementation of these strategies can significantly lower the transportation sector’s carbon footprint, contributing to a more sustainable future.

The Evolution of Real Estate: Digital Marketing's Influence

Digital marketing has become an essential trend for real estate firms in India, driven by improved network infrastructure and the widespread use of smart phones. This research examines the various digital marketing strategies employed by real estate companies and evaluates their effectiveness. With potential clients increasingly conducting their own research online, digital marketing has become a vital component of overall marketing efforts. Enhancing brand image and facilitating efficient customer communication are imperative for real estate organizations, and this requires fortifying their online presence on search engines, corporate websites, and social media platforms. Digital marketing, particularly through social media platforms, has a significant influence on the real estate industry, just like it does on many other sectors. In today's real estate marketing, websites, Face book, Integra, and YouTube have become indispensable resources. There is little study that focuses especially on social media management within India's real estate business, despite the fact that economic growth and population increase are the driving forces behind Indonesia's real estate market. Major segments in the real estate market include land, residential, commercial, and industrial properties, as well as real estate investment trusts, undeveloped land, and vacation homes. In the fiercely competitive real estate landscape, agents must do more than merely acquire a license—they need to embrace the digital innovations reshaping property transactions. Integrating digital marketing fully into real estate services is imperative. To meet the increasing demand for sustainability, real estate firms must develop digital expertise and skills to deliver impactful and efficient digital marketing solutions.
