Indigenous Early Career Researcher’s Perspectives of ‘safe spaces’’ in Higher Education

The Developing Indigenous Early Career Researchers Project is a three-year longitudinal study funded by the Australian Research Council that ran from January 2020 to December 2022. Its main focus was to investigate the experiences and perspectives of Indigenous Early Career Researchers working in universities across Australia. This article presents four main attributes identified by Indigenous Early Career Researchers as necessary to creating culturally safe spaces in Australian universities. These attributes include, safe to: (a) be Indigenous; (b) seek advice and make mistakes; (c) speak openly; and (d) trust. The successful implementation of these attributes requires institutional support and commitment in the form of relevant higher education policies and practices. Importantly, an overarching perspective of this article is that effective implementation of culturally safe spaces for Indigenous Early Career Researchers requires a significant shift in institutional discourse from the inclusion of Indigenous Peoples and Knowledges to recognising Indigenous Peoples as sovereign.

This article introduces the need for creating programs to address pervasive perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMAD) for neonatal-intensive care unit (NICU) families. When left unrecognized and untreated, PMADs impact the outcomes of NICU families and children. There is currently no standard of care for addressing NICU PMADs. This article highlights the work of the American Academy of Pediatrics Trainees and Early Career Neonatologist's National advocacy campaign, Carousel Care. This article introduces how Carousel Care helps provide a framework for providers and at individual, institutional, and national levels to implement new standards of care incorporating NICU mental health programs.

Identifying patterns and profiles of vaccination hesitancy among nurses for tailoring healthcare policies in the UK: A cross-sectional study.

To profile the characteristics of nurses with varying levels of vaccine hesitancy toward the COVID-19 and influenza vaccines. In many countries across the world, healthcare workers, and nurses in particular, display significant reluctance toward COVID-19 and influenza vaccines due to concerns about safety, distrust in healthcare policies, and media influences. To address this, a proposed approach involves profiling nurses to tailor vaccination campaigns and to improve acceptance rates and public health outcomes. This cross-sectional study adopted the Vaccination Attitudes Examination scale to assess hesitancy toward COVID-19 and influenza vaccines among 294 registered nurses in the UK between March and July 2023. A K-means cluster analysis was performed. The Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology guidelines were adopted. Three profiles were identified. Profile A showed low vaccination hesitancy, profile B showed average hesitancy, and profile C showed high hesitancy toward vaccines. The highest concern for all profiles was related to unforeseen future effects of vaccination. Profile C had more nurses in early career roles, whereas nurses in profiles A and B were in more senior roles. Profile A showed higher educational attainment. Nurses in profile C used Snapchat more, whereas nurses in profile A used Twitter more frequently. This study identified specific characteristics associated with higher levels of vaccination hesitancy in nursing. Unforeseen future effects of vaccination are a core aspect to consider in promoting vaccination. Policies and vaccination campaigns should be targeted on early career nurses and should deliver tailored messages to dispel misinformation about unforeseen future effects of vaccination through specific social media platforms. Senior nurses should be involved as role models in promoting vaccination. These results are key for enhancing an evidence-based approach to implementing global health policies in healthcare.

Strengthening the Workforce for Equity-Centered Learning Health Systems: Reflections on Embedded Research and Research Generalism Comment on "Early Career Outcomes of Embedded Research Fellows: An Analysis of the Health System Impact Fellowship Program"

As embedded researchers in Northern Ontario, Canada, we offer our reflections on Kasaai and colleagues’ 2023 "Early Career Outcomes of Embedded Research Fellows: An Analysis of the Health System Impact Fellowship Program." In our commentary, we draw on our experiences and what is known about embedded research training to examine how to build and strengthen the workforce for equity-centered learning health systems. Does our narrow understanding of outcomes and impacts of embedded research training in Canada affect who benefits and which systems can realize the potential of learning health systems? We identify three areas for deeper analysis: outcomes and impacts at the individual, partnership, and system level, knowledge on the social identities and needs of individuals in embedded research partnerships, and research generalism as a complement to embedded research. Our recommendations suggest tailored approaches to strengthen the workforce capacity for equity-centered learning health systems in Canada.

Cell scientist to watch – Alexis Barr

ABSTRACT Alexis Barr is a Cancer Research UK (CRUK) Career Development Fellow at the Institute of Clinical Sciences (ICS), Imperial College London and Medical Research Council (MRC) Investigator at the MRC Laboratory of Medical Sciences (LMS). Alexis graduated in Natural Sciences from the University of Cambridge, UK, and then undertook a PhD at the CRUK Cambridge Institute, where she studied the role of centrosomes in mitotic spindle assembly under the supervision of Fanni Gergely. For her postdoctoral studies, Alexis moved to the Institute of Cancer Research in London, where she joined the team of Chris Bakal and was awarded a Pathway to Independence Fellowship. There, she investigated the mechanisms that control cell cycle entry using quantitative single-cell imaging. In 2018, Alexis was awarded a CRUK Career Development Fellowship to start her own research group at the ICS, to research the control of cell cycle entry and exit and how these pathways can be manipulated to treat cancer. She was awarded the 2024 Women in Cell Biology Early Career Medal by the British Society for Cell Biology (BSCB). We spoke with Alexis over Zoom to find out more about her career, her advice on collaborative research and her approaches to scientific mentorship.

Remembering Jeremy Safran: continuing the conversation.

This introduction provides an overview to this special issue honoring the work and legacy of Jeremy D. Safran. Born of the Jeremy Safran Memorial Conference, held on April 2nd, 2023, this issue features a wide range of contributions from leaders in the field, former students, and early career professionals whose work engages and develops central ideas from Safran's work and reflects on his impact on their own clinical work and scholarship. Themes center around the three domains of Safran's major contributions: pedagogy; psychotherapy integration; and Buddhism, spirituality, and psychoanalysis. We observe among the contributions an experiential reconnecting with the deeply relational commitments of our friend and colleague.

Characterizing the Perceived Need for Advanced Clinical Pharmacy Training in British Columbia.

Currently in Canada there are limited opportunities for advanced clinical pharmacy training after a year 1 residency. Advanced training programs currently in existence are year 2 residencies, clinical Master's degrees, and Fellowships. To characterize the perceived need for advanced clinical pharmacy training in British Columbia and to determine the desired educational competencies to be gained through advanced training. Current pharmacy residents (academic year 2021/22) and residency graduates of the past 5 years (2017-2021), together referred to as early career pharmacists or ECPs, were surveyed. Provincial health authority pharmacy leaders who hire clinical pharmacists were also surveyed and invited to participate in key informant interviews. Eighty-four ECPs and 22 pharmacy leaders participated in the surveys (estimated response rates 26% and 35%, respectively). Eleven (13%) of the ECPs had already completed advanced clinical training, and an additional 24 (29%) planned to pursue such training within 5 years. Sixteen (73%) of the pharmacy leaders had experienced difficulties in filling advanced practice positions over the previous 3 years due to a lack of qualified applicants, and 21 (95%) believed that more advanced training positions should be offered. The majority of ECPs interested in advanced training (39/60, 65%) chose year 2 residency as their preferred program, and 20 (91%) of the pharmacy leaders agreed that British Columbia should offer year 2 residencies. Both ECPs and leaders rated clinical skills and knowledge as the most important educational competencies. Pharmacy leaders expressed a need for more pharmacists with advanced clinical pharmacy training, and many ECPs were interested in pursuing such advanced training. Most respondents preferred the year 2 residency, with the most common goal being to improve clinical competencies.

Nonlinear effect of CEO tenure on stock price crash risk

This study investigates the nonlinear relationship between CEO tenure and stock price crash risk. Using data from publicly listed U.S. firms over the period from 2000 – 2022, we report an inverted U-shaped association between CEO tenure and stock price crash risk. Specifically, managers in their early tenure appear to hoard bad news up to a threshold. After this threshold, managers appear to engage in less bad news-hoarding behavior. The threshold value of CEO tenure is attenuated by director stock ownership and lower litigation risk. The results underscore the need for monitoring early career CEOs given the nonlinear association.

Building a sustainable career during the initial transition to work: a multiple-stakeholder perspective on proactive behaviors and contextual factors

PurposeThe initial transition into work has become less predictable. Therefore, emerging adults should take charge and be proactively engaged in their careers during the preparation stage of the school-to-work transition (STWT). We explored which behaviors emerging adults display during the STWT to foster their happiness, health, and productivity, how various contextual factors enable or hinder these behaviors, and to what extent these behaviors can be considered proactive.Design/methodology/approachTaking a qualitative approach, we conducted 44 semi-structured interviews with undergraduate students at an Applied Sciences University in the Netherlands six months before graduation. Additionally, we held nine focus groups (n = 55) and four interviews (n = 6) with contextual stakeholders (i.e. parents, faculty/staff, employers, the board of the university, higher education policymakers, and the Ministry of Education).FindingsThe students mentioned three main behaviors to foster their health, happiness, and productivity, namely, eating healthy food, maintaining social contacts, and reflecting on their motivations. Our analysis shows that, conceptually, none of these behaviors can be considered truly proactive. Moreover, the findings revealed multiple systemic underlying contextual hindrances to portray these behaviors, such as educational system characteristics, which make proactive behaviors less likely.Originality/valueAs the STWT is affected by multiple contexts, adopting a multi-stakeholder perspective is imperative when studying the phenomenon. We adopted the sustainable careers framework as a lens to uncover how emerging adults may build early career sustainability—additionally, we nuance current research on proactivity by concretizing the conceptualization of proactive behaviors.

Developing and implementing a mentoring and enabling programme within EFOMP

To ensure the continued advancement of the medical physics profession, the European Federation of Organisations for Medical Physics (EFOMP) has designed a mentorship programme. This programme aims to support Early Career Medical Physicists by providing them with the guidance needed for both professional and personal development to meet the continually evolving demands of the medical physics field within their working environments.The EFOMP mentorship programme is an important step forward in supporting the next generation of medical physicists. This article provides an overview of the history, framework, goals, and implementation strategy of this programme.The programme will have two main orientations: mentoring, which will help mentees to improve their scientific, professional and soft skills, and enabling, which aims to prepare a sufficient number of early career professionals to get involved within EFOMP’s activities, join the EFOMP structures and represent the European Medical Physics community to National and International Organisations.Each year a survey from mentors and mentees will be conducted and analysed by the European and International Matters Committee and the Early Career Special Interest Group to identify areas for improvement and to evaluate the degree of satisfaction and achievements of the participants.By providing structured mentoring, fostering professional development, and promoting sustainability, EFOMP aims to ensure that early career medical physicists are well-prepared to meet the challenges of the future and continue to advance the field of medical physics as a community.

Optimising patient care: comprehensive evaluation of inpatient hypokalaemia.

Hypokalaemia is a common electrolyte disorder affecting hospitalised patients. It is associated with adverse outcomes including increased mortality. Inpatients with hypokalaemia need a different approach to workup and management as the aetiologies and progression of the hypokalaemia are distinct to outpatients. Potassium homeostasis is predominantly maintained by renal potassium handling. The clinical manifestations of hypokalaemia depend on the severity of hypokalaemia, however, most of the findings are non-specific. The approach to management is guided by the severity of the hypokalaemia and the underlying aetiology. Oral potassium replacement can be used in many cases of mild hypokalaemia. Intravenous replacement of potassium is necessary for many inpatients. Close monitoring is essential to ensure adequacy and to prevent adverse outcomes. An interdisciplinary approach with critical care input is needed in severe cases, and in patients where routine intravenous replacement may not be feasible (e.g., patients with heart failure). In addition to replacement, the cornerstone of management is a comprehensive review of the patient to identify the underlying cause of the hypokalaemia and the factors sustaining it. In patients in whom the cause is not apparent, or the potassium does not improve as anticipated, a referral to nephrology or endocrinology should be considered. This paper reviews the assessment of hypokalaemia in a hospital setting. It is aimed at early career doctors on the wards to help carry out a thorough evaluation. It also provides a useful framework for management.

Challenges and opportunities for early career researchers: using the theory of practice architectures to unpack enabling and constraining conditions

ABSTRACT Globally, there are growing examinations of what it means to be ‘early career’ in contemporary academia. Across international contexts, the experiences of early career researchers appear to be similar. This paper explores the similarities and differences of the Australian early career experience, through the lens of pathways to the academy and career stage. We use the autoethnographic reflections of two early career researchers, one following the ‘traditional’ pipeline to the academy and the other as a ‘second career’ academic. We use the theory of practice architectures to frame the study and to generate and analyse our reflections: we identify the enabling and constraining conditions and how these differ depending on previous life and professional experiences. The autoethnographic reflections illuminate how practices are shaped by the organisational arrangements within the site of the institution. This study makes a theoretical contribution by using the theory of practice architectures to illuminate early career researcher experiences. By using a practice theory, our analysis and insight provide guidance for institutional policy, professional learning, and development strategies for early career researchers.

Supporting early career teachers’ self-regulation and goal pursuit through online coaching during a professional development programme

ABSTRACT In this study, we investigated how early career teachers implemented individual goals set in a self-management training course in the context of professional development, followed by online coaching (OC) designed to support transfer to practice and self-regulation. We conducted qualitative analyses of coaches’ OC reports from 60 teachers and a case study including three teachers’ and their coaches’ perspective on the process of goal implementation. Two action-oriented patterns of goal pursuit (pragmatic and reflective) and one low focus and engagement pattern were identified. The OC helped teachers to deal with school-, stress-, and career-related challenges, and to reflect. We conclude that OC is suitable to support teachers’ self-regulation and to empower them, provided they engage with it. We argue that adaptive coaching models, based on principles of professional coaching, including goal orientation, should be further developed for teacher education.

(Sensor Division Early Career Award) Portable Diagnostics for Cancer Management at Printed Strips

Point-of-care testing (PoC) is revolutionizing the healthcare sector improving patient care in daily hospital practice and allowing reaching even remote areas. In the frame of cancer management, the design and validation of PoC enabling the non-invasive, rapid detection of cancer markers is urgently required to implement liquid biopsy. However, despite substantial advances in sensing technologies, the development, preparation, and use of self-testing devices is still confined to specialist laboratories and users. Decentralized analytical devices will enormously impact daily lives, enabling people to analyze diverse clinical, environmental, and food samples, evaluate them and make predictions to improve quality of life, particularly in remote, resource-scarce areas. In recent years, paper-based analytical tools have attracted a great deal of attention; the well-known properties of paper, such as abundance, affordability, lightness, and biodegradability, combined with features of printed electrochemical sensors, have enabled the development of sustainable devices that drive (bio)sensors beyond the state of the art. Their blindness toward colored/turbid matrices (i.e., blood, soil), their portability, and the capacity of paper to autonomously filter/purge/react with target species make such devices powerful in establishing point-of-need tools for use by non-specialists. Depending on analytical requisites, different types of paper (filter, office) and configurations (1D, 2D, 3D) can be adopted. Focusing on stable blood-based markers with high-specificity, such as miRNAs, is of crucial importance. A wide overview regarding application ranging from DNA to miRNA detection will be provided, with the aim in showing the potentialities of portable electrochemical biosensors for improving society involvement in monitoring circulating nucleic acids associated to diverse conditions, i.e. cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, HIV.
