Satellite Hyperspectral Nighttime Light Observation and Identification with DESIS

The satellite imagery of nighttime lights (NTLs) has been studied to understand human activities, economic development, and more recently, the ecological impact of brighter night skies. The Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) Day–Night Band (DNB) offers perhaps the most advanced nighttime imaging capabilities to date, but its large pixel size and single band capture large-scale changes in NTL while missing granular but important details, such as lighting type and brightness. To better understand individual NTL sources in a region, the spectra of nighttime lights captured by the DLR Earth Sensing Imaging Spectrometer (DESIS) were extracted and compared against near-coincident VIIRS DNB imagery. The analysis shows that DESIS’s finer spatial and spectral resolutions can detect individual NTL locations and types beyond what is possible with the DNB. Extracted night light spectra, validated against ground truth measurements, demonstrate DESIS’s ability to accurately detect and identify narrow-band atomic emission lines that characterize the spectra of high-intensity discharge (HID) light sources and the broader spectral features associated with different light-emitting diode (LED) lights. These results suggest the possible application of using hyperspectral data from moderate-resolution sensors to identify lamp construction details, such as illumination source type and light quality in low-light contexts. NTL data from DESIS and other hyperspectral sensors may improve the scientific understanding of light pollution, lighting quality, and energy efficiency by identifying, evaluating, and mapping individual and small groups of light sources.

Uncovering the hidden: Leveraging sub-pixel spectral diversity to estimate plant diversity from space

Remotely sensed spectral diversity has emerged as a promising proxy for plant diversity. However, spectral diversity approaches relate image spectra to plant community diversity by only incorporating variation among adjacent pixels, considering each pixel as a homogeneous entity composed of one class, and disregarding the within-pixel variability. Although such approaches might work for remotely-sensed data with fine spatial resolution, they might not be viable solutions to estimate plant diversity using coarse-resolution data from forthcoming spaceborne imagers. To address the limitations associated with spectral diversity approaches, we proposed a novel approach, known as endmember diversity, for remote estimation of plant diversity through quantifying spectral diversity at the sub-pixel level and taking into account the within-pixel variability. The approach consisted of deriving the number and abundance of distinct spectral entities within each pixel via spectral unmixing. In doing so, we considered the spectral signature of each pixel as a mixture of distinct spectral entities, commonly known as endmembers. We then used the per-pixel endmembers and their abundance to calculate different spectral diversity metrics for every pixel. We assessed the performance of the endmember diversity approach at estimating plant taxonomic and phylogenetic diversity based on two experiments using a simulated spectral dataset and a real-world spaceborne DESIS (DLR Earth Sensing Imaging Spectrometer) dataset. In both experiments, we found significant associations between endmember diversity and in situ plant diversity. Additionally, our method applied to DESIS data outperformed a conventional spectral diversity metric based on the coefficient of variation when applied to 1-m airborne imaging spectroscopy data. Collectively, our results demonstrate the capability of forthcoming spaceborne imagers to monitor local plant diversity.

Calibration of the SNPP and NOAA 20 VIIRS sensors for continuity of the MODIS climate data records

Accurate long-term sensor calibration and periodic re-processing to ensure consistency and continuity of atmospheric, land and ocean geophysical retrievals from space within the mission period and across different missions is a major requirement of climate data records. In this work, we applied the Multi-Angle Implementation of Atmospheric Correction (MAIAC)-based vicarious calibration technique over Libya-4 desert site to perform calibration analysis of Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) on Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (SNPP) and NOAA-20 satellites. For both VIIRS sensors we characterized residual linear calibration trends and cross-calibrated both sensors to MODerate resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) Aqua regarded as a calibration standard. The relative spectral response (RSR) differences were accounted for using the German Aerospace Center (DLR) Earth Sensing Imaging Spectrometer (DESIS) hyperspectral surface reflectance data. Our results agree with independent vicarious calibration results of both the MODIS/VIIRS Characterization Support Team as well as the CERES Imager and Geostationary Calibration Group within estimated uncertainty of 1–2%. Analysis of MAIAC geophysical products with the new calibration shows a high level of agreement of MAIAC aerosol, surface reflectance and NDVI records between MODIS and VIIRS. Excluding high aerosol optical depth (AOD), all three sensors agree in AOD with mean difference (MD) less than 0.01 and residual mean squared difference rmsd ∼ 0.04. Spectral geometrically normalized surface reflectance agrees within rmsd of 0.003–0.005 in the visible and 0.01–0.012 at longer wavelengths. The residual surface reflectance differences are fully explained by differences in spectral filter functions. Finally, difference in NDVI is characterized by rmsd ∼ 0.02 and MD less than 0.003 for NDVI based on VIIRS imagery bands I1/I2 and less than 0.01 for NDVI based on VIIRS radiometric bands M5/M7. In practical sense, these numbers indicate consistency and continuity in MAIAC records ensuring the smooth transition from MODIS to VIIRS.

Determination of Bayesian Cramér–Rao Bounds for Estimating Uncertainties in the Bio-Optical Properties of the Water Column, the Seabed Depth and Composition in a Coastal Environment

The monitoring of coastal areas using remote sensing techniques is an important issue to determine the bio-optical properties of the water column and the seabed composition. New hyperspectral satellite sensors (e.g., PRISMA, DESIS or EnMap) are developed to periodically observe ecosystems. The uncertainties in the retrieved geophysical products remain a key issue to release reliable data useful for the end-users. In this study, an analytical approach based on Information theory is proposed to investigate the Cramér–Rao lower Bounds (CRB) for the uncertainties in the ocean color parameters. Practically, during the inversion process, an a priori knowledge on the estimated parameters is used since their range of variation is supposed to be known. Here, a Bayesian approach is attempted to handle such a priori knowledge. A Bayesian CRB (BCRB) is derived using the Lee et al. semianalytical radiative transfer model dedicated to shallow waters. Both environmental noise and bio-optical parameters are supposed to be random vectors that follow a Gaussian distibution. The calculation of CRB and BCRB is carried out for two hyperspectral images acquired above the French mediterranean coast. The images were obtained from the recently launched hyperspectral sensors, namely the DESIS sensor (DLR Earth Sensing Imaging Spectrometer, German Aerospace Center), and PRISMA (Precursore IpperSpettrale della Mission Applicativa—ASI, Italian Space Adjency) sensor. The comparison between the usual CRB approach, the proposed BCRB approach and experimental errors obtained for the retrieved bathymetry shows the better ability of the BCRB to determine minimum error bounds.

Potential of DESIS and PRISMA hyperspectral remote sensing data in rock classification and mineral identification:a case study for Banswara in Rajasthan, India.

Remote sensing datasets and methods are suitable for mapping and managing the natural resources like minerals, clean water, and energy and also govern their sustainability nowadays. Hyperspectral (HS) imaging has immense potential for rock type classification, mineral mapping, and identification. This work demonstrates the potential of feature extraction techniques and unsupervised machine learning methods for the space-borne hyperspectral remote sensing data in characterizing and identifying mineral and classifying rock type in Banswara, Rajasthan, India. Feature extraction techniques can reveal variations within the data, which can help identify geological areas, reduce noise, and check the dimensionality of the data. Singular value decomposition (SVD)-based principal component analysis (PCA), kernel PCA (KPCA), minimum noise fraction (MNF), and independent component analysis (ICA) were tested for lithological mapping using recently launched DLR Earth Sensing Imaging Spectrometer Hyperspectral (DESIS) and PRecursore IperSpettrale della Missione Applicativa (PRISMA) data in order to map geologically significant areas. Unsupervised machine learning methods, such as Iterative Self-Organizing Data Analysis Technique (ISODATA) and K-means, were also employed. Vertex component analysis (VCA) was utilized to check for similarity and identify various spectral features. Our work demonstrates the advantages of using feature extraction algorithms such as PCA and KPCA over MNF and ICA in geological mapping and interpretability. We recommend K-means as the preferred method for lithological classification of hyperspectral remote sensing data. Our work highlights the potential of advanced feature extraction algorithms for mineral mapping using hyperspectral data, providing different ways to identify minerals and ultimately leading to better mineral resource management.

Plant species richness prediction from DESIS hyperspectral data: A comparison study on feature extraction procedures and regression models

The diversity of terrestrial vascular plants plays a key role in maintaining the stability and productivity of ecosystems. Monitoring species compositional diversity across large spatial scales is challenging and time consuming. Airborne hyperspectral imaging has shown promise for measuring plant diversity remotely, but to operationalise these efforts over large regions we need to advance satellite-based alternatives. The advanced spectral and spatial specification of the recently launched DESIS (the DLR Earth Sensing Imaging Spectrometer) instrument provides a unique opportunity to test the potential for monitoring plant species diversity with spaceborne hyperspectral data. This study provides a quantitative assessment on the ability of DESIS hyperspectral data for predicting plant species richness in two different habitat types in southeast Australia. Spectral features were first extracted from the DESIS spectra, then regressed against on-ground estimates of plant species richness, with a two-fold cross validation scheme to assess the predictive performance. We tested and compared the effectiveness of Principal Component Analysis (PCA), Canonical Correlation Analysis (CCA), and Partial Least Squares analysis (PLS) for feature extraction, and Kernel Ridge Regression (KRR), Gaussian Process Regression (GPR), and Random Forest Regression (RFR) for species richness prediction. The best prediction results were r=0.76 and RMSE=5.89 for the Southern Tablelands region, and r=0.68 and RMSE=5.95 for the Snowy Mountains region. Relative importance analysis for the DESIS spectral bands showed that the red-edge, red, and blue spectral regions were more important for predicting plant species richness than the green bands and the near-infrared bands beyond red-edge. We also found that the DESIS hyperspectral data performed better than Sentinel-2 multispectral data in the prediction of plant species richness. Our results provide a quantitative reference for future studies exploring the potential of spaceborne hyperspectral data for plant biodiversity mapping.

New Generation Hyperspectral Sensors DESIS and PRISMA Provide Improved Agricultural Crop Classifications

Using new remote sensing technology to study agricultural crops will support advances in food and water security. The recently launched, new generation spaceborne hyperspectral sensors, German DLR Earth Sensing Imaging Spectrometer (DESIS) and Italian PRecursore IperSpettrale della Missione Applicativa (PRISMA), provide unprecedented data in hundreds of narrow spectral bands for the study of the Earth. Therefore, our overarching goal in this study was to use these data to explore advances that can be made in agricultural research. We selected PRISMA and DESIS images during the 2020 growing season in California's Central Valley to study seven major crops. PRISMA and DESIS images were highly correlated (R 2of 0.9–0.95). Out of the 235 DESIS bands (400–1000 nm) and 238 PRISMA bands (400–2500 nm), 26 (11%) and 45 (19%) bands, respectively, were optimal to study agricultural crops. These optimal bands provided crop type classification accuracies of 83–90%. Hyperspectral vegetation indices to estimate plant pigment content, stress, biomass, moisture, and cellulose/lignin content were also identified.

USING DESIS AND EO-1 HYPERION REFLECTANCE TIME SERIES FOR THE ASSESSMENT OF VEGETATION TRAITS AND GROSS PRIMARY PRODUCTION (GPP)

Abstract. This study evaluates the potential of the DLR Earth Sensing Imaging Spectrometer (DESIS) visible through near-infrared (VNIR) surface reflectance to augment the EO-1 Hyperion full spectrum (400–2400 nm) reflectance collection over vegetated flux sites, to extend the reflectance time series up to the present. We compared DESIS and Hyperion surface reflectance magnitude and variability at a pseudo-invariant site (PICS) and a vegetated flux site (VFS). VNIR reflectance magnitudes between the two sensors did not significantly differ at the PICS. However, DESIS variability was higher, likely due to differences in the data acquisition time and observation geometry. Using empirical and biophysical models, both DESIS and Hyperion datasets captured the seasonal variations in gross primary production (GPP) and canopy bio-physical parameters such as chlorophyll content, leaf area index (LAI), and senescent material at the VFS. Differences in the magnitudes of the bio-physical parameters were observed, likely due to the differences in the sensors spectral range and resolution. Using together VNIR reflectance from EO-1 Hyperion and DESIS convolved to Hyperion spectral resolution to estimate canopy chlorophyll and GPP, we demonstrate that combining historic and current space-based reflectance data in a common multi-sensor approach is feasible. This is of importance for extending the reflectance record established with EO-1 Hyperion to provide continuity with the current orbital instruments (e.g., DESIS/ISS, PRISMA/ASI) and the forthcoming NASA Surface Biology and Geology (SBG), ESA CHIME and DLR EnMAP satellite missions, which is of key importance for comparisons of current and past trends in the seasonal dynamics of vegetation traits and photosynthetic function.

EVALUATING APPROACHES RELATING ECOSYSTEM PRODUCTIVITY WITH DESIS SPECTRAL INFORMATION

Abstract. Data from the DLR Earth Sensing Imaging Spectrometer (DESIS), mounted on the International Space Station (ISS), were used to develop and test algorithms for remotely retrieving ecosystem productivity. Twenty DESIS images were used from three widely separated forested study sites representing deciduous and conifer forests. Gross primary production (GPP) values from eddy covariance flux towers at the sites were matched with DESIS spectral reflectances collected on the same days. Multiple algorithms were successful relating spectral reflectance with GPP, including: spectral vegetation indices (SVI) sensitive to chlorophyll content, SVI used in a photosynthetic light-use efficiency model framework, spectral shape characteristics through spectral derivatives and absorption feature analysis, and statistical models leading to multiband hyperspectral indices from partial least squares regression. Successful algorithms were able to achieve R2 better than 0.7 using a diverse set of observations combining data from different sites from multiple years and at multiple times during the year. The demonstrated robustness of the algorithms provides some confidence in using DESIS imagery to map spatial patterns of GPP.

VNIR HYPERSPECTRAL ANALYSIS OF RAMGARH ASTROBLEME IN NORTHERN INDIA

Abstract. Hyperspectral remote sensing has immense potential to characterize any surface by utilizing the detailed spectral information obtained from hundreds of narrow and contiguous bands. This work utilizes the latest DESIS (DLR Earth Sensing Imaging Spectrometer) hyperspectral data from the Ramgarh astrobleme (crater) in the state of Rajasthan, India to identify the surface geology and the changes that have undergone. Vertex Component analysis has been applied on DESIS data, and the output end members were compared with the reference spectra from the spectral library. However, due to the amount of vegetation in the study area, the Vegetation Response Removal (EVRR) thresholding model is proposed to remove the effect of vegetation. With the application of EVRR, the presence of quartz with impurities is noticed.

THE DESIS L2A PROCESSOR AND VALIDATION OF L2A PRODUCTS USING AERONET AND RADCALNET DATA

Abstract. The hyperspectral instrument ”DLR Earth Sensing Imaging Spectrometer” (DESIS) is a VNIR sensor on-board of the International Space Station (ISS) and operational since October 2019. DESIS acquires images of Earth on user request with a swath of about 30 km width and 235 bands with a Full Width at Half Maximum (FWHM) of 3.5 nm in the spectral range between 400 to 1000 nm.In this article we will present the basis of the atmospheric correction by PACO software, implemented inside the DESIS Ground Segment as L2A processor. The resulting L2A products will be validated against independent in-situ measurements.The aerosol optical thickness and water vapor will be compared with the Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET) measurements and the surface reflectance will be validated with the Radiometric Calibration Network (RadCalNet) data.

New Generation Hyperspectral Data From DESIS Compared to High Spatial Resolution PlanetScope Data for Crop Type Classification

Thoroughly investigating the characteristics of new generation hyperspectral and high spatial resolution spaceborne sensors will advance the study of agricultural crops. Therefore, we compared the performances of hyperspectral Deutsches Zentrum fur Luft - und Raumfahrt- (DLR) Earth Sensing Imaging Spectrometer (DESIS) and high spatial resolution PlanetScope in classifying eight crop types in California's Central Valley during the 2020 growing season. The DESIS sensor onboard the International Space Station collects data at 235 hyperspectral narrowbands (HNB) each with 2.55 nm bandwidth from 400-1000 nm and 30 m spatial resolution. In contrast, PlanetScope Dove-R data have 4 multispectral broadbands (MBB) with 3-4 m spatial resolution. We obtained best classification accuracies using 14 DESIS HNB from the August 2020 image, with an overall accuracy of 85% and producer's and user's accuracies of 72-100% and 75-100% respectively for the eight crops. The best classification accuracies using PlanetScope data were obtained using an image mosaic pair from June and August 2020; this resulted in an overall accuracy of 79% and producer's and user's accuracies of 56-100% and 61-100% respectively. Combining the best 14 DESIS HNB from August 2020 with the 4 PlanetScope MBB from August 2020 yielded an overall accuracy of 82% and producer's and user's accuracies of 65-100% and 60-94% respectively. On one-to-one single date comparisons of DESIS versus PlanetScope data, the hyperspectral data always outperformed high spatial resolution data in crop type classification. Nevertheless, high spatial resolution data will remain invaluable in assessing within-field variability and crop biophysical/biochemical modeling in precision agriculture.

Classifying Crop Types Using Two Generations of Hyperspectral Sensors (Hyperion and DESIS) with Machine Learning on the Cloud

Advances in spaceborne hyperspectral (HS) remote sensing, cloud-computing, and machine learning can help measure, model, map and monitor agricultural crops to address global food and water security issues, such as by providing accurate estimates of crop area and yield to model agricultural productivity. Leveraging these advances, we used the Earth Observing-1 (EO-1) Hyperion historical archive and the new generation DLR Earth Sensing Imaging Spectrometer (DESIS) data to evaluate the performance of hyperspectral narrowbands in classifying major agricultural crops of the U.S. with machine learning (ML) on Google Earth Engine (GEE). EO-1 Hyperion images from the 2010–2013 growing seasons and DESIS images from the 2019 growing season were used to classify three world crops (corn, soybean, and winter wheat) along with other crops and non-crops near Ponca City, Oklahoma, USA. The supervised classification algorithms: Random Forest (RF), Support Vector Machine (SVM), and Naive Bayes (NB), and the unsupervised clustering algorithm WekaXMeans (WXM) were run using selected optimal Hyperion and DESIS HS narrowbands (HNBs). RF and SVM returned the highest overall producer’s, and user’s accuracies, with the performances of NB and WXM being substantially lower. The best accuracies were achieved with two or three images throughout the growing season, especially a combination of an earlier month (June or July) and a later month (August or September). The narrow 2.55 nm bandwidth of DESIS provided numerous spectral features along the 400–1000 nm spectral range relative to smoother Hyperion spectral signatures with 10 nm bandwidth in the 400–2500 nm spectral range. Out of 235 DESIS HNBs, 29 were deemed optimal for agricultural study. Advances in ML and cloud-computing can greatly facilitate HS data analysis, especially as more HS datasets, tools, and algorithms become available on the Cloud.

DLR Earth Sensing Imaging Spectrometer (DESIS) Level 1 Product Evaluation Using RadCalNet Measurements

The DLR Earth Sensing Imaging Spectrometer (DESIS) is the first hyperspectral imaging spectrometer installed in the Multi-User System for Earth Sensing (MUSES) on the International Space Station (ISS) for acquiring routine science grade images from orbit. It was launched on 29 June 2018 and integrated into MUSES. DESIS measures energy in the spectral range of 400 to 1000 nm with high spatial and spectral resolution: 30 m and 2.55 nm, respectively. DESIS data should be sufficiently quantitative and accurate to use it for different applications and research. This work performs a radiometric evaluation of DESIS Level 1 product (Top of Atmosphere (TOA) reflectance) by comparing it with coincident Radiometric Calibration Network (RadCalNet) measurements at Railroad Valley Playa (RVUS), Gobabeb (GONA), and La Crau (LCFR). RVUS, GONA, and LCFR offer 4, 15, and 5 coincident datasets between DESIS and RadCalNet measurements, respectively. The results show an agreement between DESIS and RadCalNet TOA reflectance within ~5% for most spectral regions. However, there is an additional ~5% disagreement across the wavelengths affected by water vapor absorption and atmospheric scattering. Among the three RadCalNet sites, RVUS and GONA show a similar measurement disagreement with DESIS of ~5%, while LCFR differs by ~10%. Agreement between DESIS and RadCalNet measurements is variable across all three sites, likely due to surface type differences. DESIS and RadCalNet agreement show a precision of ~2.5%, 4%, and 7% at RVUS, GONA, and LCFR, respectively. RVUS and GONA, which have a similar surface type, sand, have a similar level of radiometric accuracy and precision, whereas LCFR, which consists of sparse vegetation, has lower accuracy and precision. The observed precision of DESIS Level 1 products from all the sites, especially LCFR, can be improved with a better Bidirectional Reflection Distribution Function (BRDF) characterization of the RadCalNet sites.

PACO: Python-Based Atmospheric COrrection.

The atmospheric correction of satellite images based on radiative transfer calculations is a prerequisite for many remote sensing applications. The software package ATCOR, developed at the German Aerospace Center (DLR), is a versatile atmospheric correction software, capable of processing data acquired by many different optical satellite sensors. Based on this well established algorithm, a new Python-based atmospheric correction software has been developed to generate L2A products of Sentinel-2, Landsat-8, and of new space-based hyperspectral sensors such as DESIS (DLR Earth Sensing Imaging Spectrometer) and EnMAP (Environmental Mapping and Analysis Program). This paper outlines the underlying algorithms of PACO, and presents the validation results by comparing L2A products generated from Sentinel-2 L1C images with in situ (AERONET and RadCalNet) data within VNIR-SWIR spectral wavelengths range.

Data Products, Quality and Validation of the DLR Earth Sensing Imaging Spectrometer (DESIS).

Imaging spectrometry from aerial or spaceborne platforms, also known as hyperspectral remote sensing, provides dense sampled and fine structured spectral information for each image pixel, allowing the user to identify and characterize Earth surface materials such as minerals in rocks and soils, vegetation types and stress indicators, and water constituents. The recently launched DLR Earth Sensing Imaging Spectrometer (DESIS) installed on the International Space Station (ISS) closes the long-term gap of sparsely available spaceborne imaging spectrometry data and will be part of the upcoming fleet of such new instruments in orbit. DESIS measures in the spectral range from 400 and 1000 nm with a spectral sampling distance of 2.55 nm and a Full Width Half Maximum (FWHM) of about 3.5 nm. The ground sample distance is 30 m with 1024 pixels across track. In this article, a detailed review is given on the applicability of DESIS data based on the specifics of the instrument, the characteristics of the ISS orbit, and the methods applied to generate products. The various DESIS data products available for users are described with the focus on specific processing steps. The results of the data quality and product validation studies show that top-of-atmosphere radiance, geometrically corrected, and bottom-of-atmosphere reflectance products meet the mission requirements. The limitations of the DESIS data products are also subject to a critical examination.

The Instrument Design of the DLR Earth Sensing Imaging Spectrometer (DESIS).

Whether for identification and characterization of materials or for monitoring of the environment, space-based hyperspectral instruments are very useful. Hyperspectral instruments measure several dozens up to hundreds of spectral bands. These data help to reconstruct the spectral properties like reflectance or emission of Earth surface or the absorption of the atmosphere, and to identify constituents on land, water, and in the atmosphere. There are a lot of possible applications, from vegetation and water quality up to greenhouse gas monitoring. But the actual number of hyperspectral space-based missions or hyperspectral space-based data is limited. This will be changed in the next years by different missions. The German Aerospace Center (DLR) Earth Sensing Imaging Spectrometer (DESIS) is one of the new currently existing space-based hyperspectral instruments, launched in 2018 and ready to reduce the gap of space-born hyperspectral data. The instrument is operating onboard the International Space Station, using the Multi-User System for Earth Sensing (MUSES) platform. The instrument has 235 spectral bands in the wavelength range from visible (400 nm) to near-infrared (1000 nm), which results in a 2.5 nm spectral sampling distance and a ground sampling distance of 30 m from 400 km orbit of the International Space Station. In this article, the design of the instrument will be described.

PROCESSING CHAINS FOR DESIS AND ENMAP IMAGING SPECTROSCOPY DATA: SIMILARITIES AND DIFFERENCES

Abstract. The Earth Observation Center (EOC) of the German Aerospace Center (DLR) realizes operational processors for DESIS (DLR Earth Sensing Imaging Spectrometer) and EnMAP (Environmental Mapping and Analysis Program) high-resolution imaging spectroscopy remote sensing satellite missions. DESIS is planned to be launched in 2018 and EnMAP in 2020. The developmental (namely schedule, deployment, and team) and functional (namely processing levels, algorithms in processors, and archiving approaches) similarities and differences of the fully-automatic processors are analyzed. The processing chains generate high-quality standardized image products for users at different levels taking characterization and calibration data into account. EOC has long lasting experiences with the airborne and spaceborne acquisition, processing, and analysis of hyperspectral image data. It turns out that both activities strongly benefit from each other.

DATA PROCESSING FOR THE SPACE-BASED DESIS HYPERSPECTRAL SENSOR

Abstract. The German Aerospace Center (DLR) and Teledyne Brown Engineering (TBE) have established a collaboration to develop and operate a new space-based hyperspectral sensor, the DLR Earth Sensing Imaging Spectrometer (DESIS). DESIS will provide spacebased hyperspectral data in the VNIR with high spectral resolution and near-global coverage. While TBE provides the platform and infrastructure for operation of the DESIS instrument on the International Space Station, DLR is responsible for providing the instrument and the processing software. The DESIS instrument is equipped with novel characteristics for an imaging spectrometer such high spectral resolution (2.55 nm), a mirror pointing unit or a CMOS sensor operated in rolling shutter mode. We present here an overview of the DESIS instrument and its processing chain, emphasizing the effect of the novel characteristics of DESIS in the data processing and final data products. Furthermore, we analyse in more detail the effect of the rolling shutter on the DESIS data and possible mitigation/correction strategies.

THE NEW HYPERSPECTRAL SENSOR DESIS ON THE MULTI-PAYLOAD PLATFORM MUSES INSTALLED ON THE ISS

The new hyperspectral instrument DLR Earth Sensing Imaging Spectrometer (DESIS) will be developed and integrated in the Multi-User-System for Earth Sensing (MUSES) platform installed on the International Space Station (ISS). The DESIS instrument will be launched to the ISS mid of 2017 and robotically installed in one of the four slots of the MUSES platform. After a four month commissioning phase the operational phase will last at least until 2020. The MUSES / DESIS system will be commanded and operated by the publically traded company TBE (Teledyne Brown Engineering), which initiated the whole program. TBE provides the MUSES platform and the German Aerospace Center (DLR) develops the instrument DESIS and establishes a Ground Segment for processing, archiving, delivering and calibration of the image data mainly used for scientific and humanitarian applications. Well calibrated and harmonized products will be generated together with the Ground Segment established at Teledyne. The article describes the Space Segment consisting of the MUSES platform and the instrument DESIS as well as the activities at the two (synchronized) Ground Segments consisting of the processing methods, product generation, data calibration and product validation. Finally comments to the data policy are given.
