Innovative methodology for noninvasive spatial mapping of gold nanoparticle distribution in tissues: potential applications in biomedical imaging and therapy

Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) have emerged as versatile agents in biomedical applications, particularly for enhancing contrast in tagged biological tissues for tumor imaging and diagnostics due to their strong absorption cross-section. In this study, we present a methodology for quantifying the spatial distribution of AuNPs within superficial tissue volumes. Utilizing silicone tissue phantoms as a background medium and spatial frequency domain imaging (SFDI) to measure the tissues’ optical properties, we constructed a lookup table (LUT) to infer the optical properties of embedded AuNPs with varying spatial concentrations and depths across multiple spatial frequencies. An analytical solution derived from the LUT facilitated the determination of embedded NP concentration in-depth as a function of measured spatial frequency-dependent optical absorption. Notably, SFDI enabled the spatial localization of NPs in three dimensions. These findings lay the foundation for future in vivo studies on mapping NPs and hold significant promise for advancing biomedical imaging techniques.

Quantitative analysis of the electromagnetic hybrid nanofluid flow within the gap of two tubes using deep learning neural networks

Purpose(1) A mathematical model for the Hybrid nanofluids flow is used as carriers for delivering drugs. (2) The flow conditions are controlled to enable drug-loaded nanofluids to flow through the smaller gap between the two tubes. (3) Hybrid nanofluids (HNFs) made from silver (Ag) and titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles are analyzed for applications of drug delivery. (Ag) and (TiO2) (NPs) are suitable candidates for cancer treatment due to their excellent biocompatibility, high photoactivity, and low toxicity. (4) The new strategy of artificial neural networks (ANN) is used which is machine-based and more prominent in validation, and comparison with other techniques.Design/methodology/approachThe two Tubes are settled in such a manner that the gap between them is uniform. The Control Volume Finite Element Method; Rk-4 and Artificial Neural Network (ANN).Findings(1) From the obtained results it is observed that the dispersion and distribution of drug-loaded nanoparticles within the body will be improved by the convective motion caused by hybrid nanofluids. The effectiveness and uniformity of drug delivery to target tissues or organs is improved based on the uniform flow and uniform gap. (2) The targeting efficiency of nanofluids is further improved with the addition of the magnetic field. (3) The size of the cylinders, and flow rate, are considered uniform to optimize the drug delivery.Research limitations/implications(1)The flow phenomena is considered laminar, one can use the same idea through a turbulent flow case. (2) The gap is considered uniform and will be interesting if someone extends the idea as non-uniform.Practical implications(1) To deliver drugs to the targeted area, a suitable mathematical model is required. (2) The analysis of hybrid nanofluids (HNFs) derived from silver (Ag) and titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles is conducted for the purpose of drug delivery. The biocompatibility, high photoactivity, and low toxicity of (Ag) and (TiO2) (NPs) make them ideal candidates for cancer treatment. (3) Machine-based artificial neural networks (ANN) have a new strategy that is more prominent in validation compared to other techniques.Social implicationsThe drug delivery model is a useful strategy for new researchers. (1) They can extend this idea using a non-uniform gap. (2) The flow is considered uniform, the new researchers can extend the idea using a turbulent case. (3) Other hybrid nanofluids flow, in the same model for other industrial usages are possible.Originality/valueAll the obtained results are new. The experimental thermophysical results are used from the existing literature and references are provided.

Implementing magnetically-active Sn-based nanocomposites in hexavalent chromium removal from drinking water

A novel nanocomposite consisting of Fe3O4-loaded tin oxyhydroxy-chloride is demonstrated as an efficient adsorbent for the removal of hexavalent chromium in compliance to the new drinking water regulation. This study introduces a continuous-flow production of the nanocomposite through the separate synthesis of (i) 40 nm Fe3O4 nanoparticles and (ii) multilayered spherical arrangements of a tin hydroxy-chloride identified as abhurite, before the application of a wet-blending process. The homogeneous distribution of Fe3O4 nanoparticles on the abhurite's morphology, features nanocomposite with magnetic response whereas the 10 % loaded nanocomposite preserves a Cr(VI) uptake capacity of 7.2 mg/g for residual concentrations below 25 μg/L. Kinetic and thermodynamic examination of the uptake evolution indicates a relative rapid Cr(VI) capture dominated by interparticle diffusion and a spontaneous endothermic process mediated by reduction to Cr(III). The efficiency of the optimized nanocomposite was validated in a pilot unit operating in a sequence of a stirring reactor and a rotary magnetic separator showing an alternative and competitive application path than typical fixed-bed filtration, which is supported by the absence of any acute cellular toxicity according to human kidney cell viability tests.

Investigation on corrosion resistance of electroless Ni-W-P coatings co-deposited with SiO2 nanoparticles

The corrosion of materials in sea environment are generally caused by salt spray, tidal action and adhesion of marine organisms. It is necessary to ensure the materials possess the required strength and good corrosion resistance during operation. Although the existing Ni-W-P electroless plating can provide a certain degree of corrosion protection, its corrosion resistance is still limited under harsh marine condition. SiO2 nanoparticles have received extensive concern due to their excellent corrosion resistance, which has been considered as potential candidates for enhancing corrosion resistance in multicomponent electroless coatings. In this study, the electroless Ni-W-P coatings with SiO2 nanoparticles co-deposition on the Q235 substrate was prepared. The coating was characterized through scanning electron microscopy (SEM), x-ray diffraction (XRD), polarization techniques, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). As a result, the Ni-W-P coating co-deposited with SiO2 nanoparticles demonstrates superior corrosion resistance compared to the pure Ni-W-P coating. The surface of SiO2 nanoparticles contain three distinct bonded hydroxyl functional groups, which can influence the ionic reaction in the plating solution and the deposition of elements in the coating. After modified by PVA, it can be uniformly dispersed in the coating, and the composite coating with SiO2 nanoparticles co-deposited is transformed into a nanocrystalline structure. The even distribution of SiO2 nanoparticles fill the defects within the coating, leading to a reduction in porosity, permeability, and susceptibility to penetration of corrosive media. Concurrently, the nanoparticles facilitate surface passivation, forming a stable interface with substrate and coating that inhibits electrochemical reactions and diminishes the rate of self-corrosion reactions. The good and stable corrosion resistance is achieved at the SiO2 concentration of 9 g l−1 and PVA concentration of 1.08 g l−1. These findings offer valuable insights for addressing corrosion challenges in the field of marine engineering.

Electrostatic Self-Assembly Synthesis of Pd/In2O3 Nanocatalysts with Improved Performance Toward CO2 Hydrogenation to Methanol.

CO2 hydrogenation to methanol has emerged as a promising strategy for achieving carbon neutrality and mitigating global warming, in which the supported Pd/In2O3 catalysts are attracting great attention due to their high selectivity. Nonetheless, conventional impregnation methods induce strong metal-support interaction (SMSI) between Pd and In2O3, which leads to the excessive reduction of In2O3 and the formation of undesirable PdIn alloy in hydrogen-rich atmospheres. Herein, we innovatively synthesized Pd/In2O3 nanocatalysts by the electrostatic self-assembly process between surface-modified composite precursors with opposite charges. And the organic ligands concurrently serve as Pd nanoparticle protective agents. The resultant Pd/In2O3 nanocatalyst demonstrates the homogeneous distribution of Pd nanoparticles with controllable sizes on In2O3 supports and the limited formation of PdIn alloy. As a result, it exhibits superior selectivity and stability compared to the counterparts synthesized by the conventional impregnation procedure. Typically, it attains a maximum methanol space-time yield of 0.54 gMeOH h-1gcat -1 (300 °C, 3.5 MPa, 21,000 mL gcat -1 h-1). Notably, the correlation characterization results reveal the significant effect of small-size, highly dispersed Pd nanoparticles in mitigating MSI. These results provide an alternative strategy for synthesizing highly efficient Pd/In2O3 catalysts and offer a new insight into the strong metal-support interaction.

Surface enhanced Raman scattering in thin films: the importance of Raman analyte-plasmonic particle inverse geometry

Most of the successful applications of surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) involves placing the Raman analyte molecule over the SERS substrate. This conventional geometry of SERS does not work when the Raman analyte is in the form of a thin film. In this report, we experimentally demonstrate the importance of the rarely explored inverse geometry wherein a plasmonic particle is placed over an analyte thin film for SERS study. Initially, as a case study, the effect of size, concentration, and distribution of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) on the SERS of Si wafer was performed. The AuNPs, prepared by optimized annealing of direct current sputtered Au, were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and UV-Visible spectrophotometry. Finally, as an application, SERS in inverse geometry was successfully performed with an electron-beam evaporated Si thin film. For the first time, a working formula has been proposed to determine the experimental enhancement factor (EEF) for the inverse geometry of SERS. The values of EEF were estimated to be 1526 and 3274 respectively for Si wafer and Si thin film for the similar distribution of AuNPs of average size 52 nm. This study provides an insight into the characterization of thin films.

Ti/Ta-based composite polysaccharide scaffolds for guided bone regeneration in total hip arthroplasty

Guided bone regeneration can play an important role in orthopedic applications. This work presents the synthesis and characterization of composite scaffolds based on polysaccharides loaded with microparticles of titanium or tantalum as novel materials proposed for composite systems with promising characteristics for guided bone regeneration. Ti/Ta composite scaffolds were synthesized using chitosan and gellan gum as organic substrates and crosslinked with oxidized dextran resulting in stable inorganic-organic composites. Physico-chemical characterization revealed a uniform distribution of metal nanoparticles within the scaffolds that showed a release of metals lower than 5 %. In vitro biological assays demonstrated that Ta composites exhibit a 2 times higher ALP activity than Ti and a higher capacity to support the full differentiation of human mesenchymal stem cells into osteoblasts. These results highlight their potential for bone regeneration applications.

Characterization of multifunctional β-cyclodextrin-coated Bi2O3 nanoparticles conjugated with curcumin for CT imaging-guided synergetic chemo-radiotherapy in breast cancer

Nanotechnology-based diagnostic, and therapeutic approaches revolutionized the field of cancer detection, and treatment, offering tremendous potential for cost-effective interventions in the early stages of disease. This research synthesized bismuth oxide (Bi2O3) nanoparticles (NPs) that were modified with polycyclodextrin (PCD), and functionalized with glucose (Glu) to load curcumin (CUR) for CT imaging and chemo-radiotherapy applications in Breast Cancer.The prepared Bi2O3@PCD-CUR-Glu NPs underwent comprehensive characterization, encompassing various aspects, including cell migration, cytotoxicity, cellular uptake, blood compatibility, reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation ability, real-time PCR analysis, in-vivo safety assessment, in-vivo anti-tumor efficacy, as well as in-vitro CT contrast and X-ray RT enhancement evaluation. CT scan was conducted before and after (1 and 3 h) intravenous injection of Bi2O3@PCD-CUR-Glu NPs. Through the use of coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) analysis, the final prepared nanoparticle distribution in the Bab/c mice was assessed.The spherical NPs that were ultimately synthesized and had a diameter of around 80 nm demonstrated exceptional toxicity towards the SKBr-3 breast cancer cell line. The cell viability was at its lowest level after 48 h of exposure to a radiation dose of 2 Gy at a concentration of 100 µg/mL. The combined treatment involving using Bi2O3@PCD-CUR-Glu NPs along with X-ray radiation showed a substantial increase in the generation of ROS, specifically a remarkable 420 % growth. Gene expression analysis indicated that the expression levels of P53, and BAX pro-apoptotic genes were significantly increased. The in-vitro CT imaging analysis conducted unequivocally demonstrated the notable superiority of NPs over Omnipaque in terms of X-ray absorption capacity, a staggering 1.52-fold increase at 80 kVp.The resultsdemonstrated that the targeted Bi2O3@PCD-CUR-Glu NPs could enhance the visibility of a small mice tumor that is detectable by computed tomography and made visible through X-ray attenuation. Results suggested that Bi2O3@PCD-CUR-Glu NPs, integrated with CT imaging and chemo-radiotherapy, have great potential as a versatile theranostic system for clinical application.

Strength-Plasticity Relationship and Intragranular Nanophase Distribution of Hybrid (GNS + SiCnp)/Al Composites Based on Heat Treatment.

The distribution of reinforcements and interfacial bonding state with the metal matrix are crucial factors in achieving excellent comprehensive mechanical properties for aluminum (Al) matrix composites. Normally, after heat treatment, graphene nanosheets (GNSs)/Al composites experience a significant loss of strength. Here, better performance of GNS/Al was explored with a hybrid strategy by introducing 0.9 vol.% silicon carbide nanoparticles (SiCnp) into the composite. Pre-ball milling of Al powders and 0.9 vol.% SiCnp gained Al flakes that provided a large dispersion area for 3.0 vol.% GNS during the shift speed ball milling process, leading to uniformly dispersed GNS for both as-sintered and as-extruded (0.9 vol.% SiCnp + 3.0 vol.% GNS)/Al. High-temperature heat treatment at 600 °C for 60 min was performed on the as-extruded composite, giving rise to intragranular distribution of SiCnp due to recrystallization and grain growth of the Al matrix. Meanwhile, nanoscale Al4C3, which can act as an additional reinforcing nanoparticle, was generated because of an appropriate interfacial reaction between GNS and Al. The intragranular distribution of both nanoparticles improves the Al matrix continuity of composites and plays a key role in ensuring the plasticity of composites. As a result, the work hardening ability of the heat-treated hybrid (0.9 vol.% SiCnp + 3.0 vol.% GNS)/Al composite was well improved, and the tensile elongation increased by 42.7% with little loss of the strength. The present work provides a new strategy in achieving coordination on strength-plasticity of Al matrix composites.

Efficient H2O/CO2 co-electrolysis with NixCu1-x alloy nanocatalysts modified perovskite-type titanate cathodes

Syngas, a mixture of H2 and CO with adjustable compositional ratios, can be directly produced via H2O/CO2 co-electrolysis in solid oxide electrolysis cells (SOECs). In this study, We have developed a strategy to enhance the catalytic activity of titanate perovskite cathodes by constructing active metal-oxide interfaces through the in-situ growth of NixCu1-x alloy nanocatalysts (x = 0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75 and 1) on LST matrix. The evenly distribution of NixCu1-x alloy nanoparticles (∼30 nm) on the LST substrate has been confirmed through a serious of characterization techniques, including XRD, XPS, SEM and TEM. Specifically, the LSTNi0.75Cu0.25 cathode demonstrated an optimal synergistic effect, achieving high efficiency in the co-electrolysis of H2O/CO2 to syngas. Under an applied voltage of 1.6 V at 800 °C, the syngas production rate reaches 5.43H2 and 3.48 CO ml min−1 cm−2 with ∼96 % Faradaic efficiency. Furthermore, the composition of the produced syngas can be finely tuned in a broad range from 0.8 to 3.5 b y simply adjusting the inlet gas composition (H2O/CO2 ratio) and the operating temperature. The LSTNi0.75Cu0.25 cathode, when subjected to continuous H2O/CO2 co-electrolysis for 100 h, exhibited remarkable stability, attributing to the robust and active nature of the metal-oxide interfaces.

Assessment of thermal damage for plasmonic photothermal therapy of subsurface tumors.

Plasmonic photothermal therapy (PPTT) involves the use of nanoparticles and near-infrared radiation to attain a temperature above 50°C within the tumor for its thermal damage. PPTT is largely explored for superficial tumors, and its potential to treat deeper subsurface tumors is dealt feebly, requiring the assessment of thermal damage for such tumors. In this paper, the extent of thermal damage is numerically analyzed for PPTT of invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC) situated at 3-9mm depths. The developed numerical model is validated with suitable tissue-tumor mimicking phantoms. Tumor (IDC) embedded with gold nanorods (GNRs) is subjected to broadband near-infrared radiation. The effect of various GNRs concentrations and their spatial distributions [viz. uniform distribution, intravenous delivery (peripheral distribution) and intratumoral delivery (localized distribution)] are investigated for thermal damage for subsurface tumors situated at various depths. Results show that lower GNRs concentrations lead to more uniform internal heat generation, eventually resulting in uniform temperature rise. Also, the peripheral distribution of nanoparticles provides a more uniform spatial temperature rise within the tumor. Overall, it is concluded that PPTT has potential to induce thermal damage for subsurface tumors, at depths of upto 9mm, by proper choice of nanoparticle distribution, dose/concentration and irradiation parameters based on the tumor location. Moreover, intravenous administration of nanoparticles seems a good choice for shallower tumors, while for deeper tumors, uniform distribution is required to attain the necessary thermal damage. In the future, the algorithm may be extended further, involving 3D patient-specific tumors and through mice model-based experiments.

New Approach to Synthesizing Cathode PtCo/C Catalysts for Low-Temperature Fuel Cells

The presented study is concerned with a new multi-step method to synthesize PtCo/C materials based on composite CoxOy/C that combines the advantages of different liquid-phase synthesis methods. Based on the results of studying the materials at each stage of synthesis with the TG, XRD, TEM, SEI, TXRF, CV and LSV methods, a detailed overview of the sequential changes in catalyst composition and structure at each stage of the synthesis is presented. The PtCo/C catalyst synthesized with the multi-step method is characterized by a uniform distribution of bimetallic nanoparticles of about 3 nm in size over the surface of the support, which result in its high ESA and ORR activity. The activity study for the synthesized PtCo/C catalyst in an MEA showed better current–voltage characteristics and a higher maximum specific power compared with an MEA based on a commercial Pt/C catalyst. Therefore, the results of the presented study demonstrate high prospects for the developed approach to the multi-step synthesis of PtM/C catalysts, which may enhance the characteristics of proton-exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs).

Impact of Surface Functionality on Biodistribution of Gold Nanoparticles in Silkworms

To date, animal models are still indispensable for studying biodistribution and elimination of nanomaterials. However, the use of mammals for in vivo experiments faces various challenges including increasing regulatory hurdles and costs. This study aims to validate larvae of the domestic silkworm Bombyx mori as an alternative invertebrate model for preliminary in vivo research. Organ distribution and elimination of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) are compared with four different surface functionalities in silkworms after systemic administration: AuNPs coated with poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG), with polyglycidols (PGs) that are slightly hydrophobic (PG(alkyl)), positively charged (PG(+)), or negatively charged (PG(−)). Subsequent inductive coupled plasma mass spectrometry 6 or 24 h after AuNPs administration reveals the biodistribution in silkworm hemolymph, midgut, epidermis, and excrements. Even after 24 h incubation, hemolymph contains the highest AuNPs concentrations, independent of surface functionalization indicating a prolonged circulation time and slow distribution into different silkworm organs and tissues. Positively charged PG(+)AuNPs show three times higher concentrations in the midgut and are excreted at the fastest rate when compared to other AuNPs. In the findings, a surface‐dependent biodistribution and elimination of AuNPs are indicated in silkworms, and the feasibility of using this inexpensive animal model for time‐ and cost‐effective, preliminary in vivo studies of NPs is confirmed.

Study of the Synthesis of Multi-Cationic Sm-Co-O, Sm-Ni-O, Al-Co-O, Al-Ni-O, and Al-Co-Ni-O Aerogels and Their Catalytic Activity in the Dry Reforming of Methane.

Dense multi-cationic Sm-Co-O, Sm-Ni-O, Al-Co-O, Al-Ni-O, and Al-Ni-Co-O oxide aerogels were prepared by epoxide-driven sol-gel synthesis. Catalysts for dry reformation of methane, Sm2O3/Co, Sm2O3/Ni, Al2O3/Co, Al2O3/Ni, Al2O3/Co, and Ni were prepared by reduction of aerogels with hydrogen and their catalytic activities and C-deposition during dry reformation of methane were tested. Catalytic tests showed high methane conversion (93-98%) and C-deposition (0.01-4.35 mg C/gcat.h). The highest content of C-deposits after catalytic tests was determined for Al2O3/Co and Al2O3/Ni catalysts, which was related to the formation of Al alloys with Co and Ni. A uniform distribution of Co0 and Ni0 nanoparticles (in the form of a CoNi alloy) was found only for the Al2O3/Co and Ni catalysts, which showed the highest activity as well as low C deposition.

Infection-Free and Enhanced Wound Healing Potential of Alginate Gels Incorporating Silver and Tannylated Calcium Peroxide Nanoparticles.

The treatment of chronic wounds involves precise requirements and complex challenges, as the healing process cannot go beyond the inflammatory phase, therefore increasing the healing time and implying a higher risk of opportunistic infection. Following a better understanding of the healing process, oxygen supply has been validated as a therapeutic approach to improve and speed up wound healing. Moreover, the local implications of antimicrobial agents (such as silver-based nano-compounds) significantly support the normal healing process, by combating bacterial contamination and colonization. In this study, silver (S) and tannylated calcium peroxide (CaO2@TA) nanoparticles were obtained by adapted microfluidic and precipitation synthesis methods, respectively. After complementary physicochemical evaluation, both types of nanoparticles were loaded in (Alg) alginate-based gels that were further evaluated as possible dressings for wound healing. The obtained composites showed a porous structure and uniform distribution of nanoparticles through the polymeric matrix (evidenced by spectrophotometric analysis and electron microscopy studies), together with a good swelling capacity. The as-proposed gel dressings exhibited a constant and suitable concentration of released oxygen, as shown for up to eight hours (UV-Vis investigation). The biofilm modulation data indicated a synergistic antimicrobial effect between silver and tannylated calcium peroxide nanoparticles, with a prominent inhibitory action against the Gram-positive bacterial biofilm after 48 h. Beneficial effects in the human keratinocytes cultured in contact with the obtained materials were demonstrated by the performed tests, such as MTT, LDH, and NO.

Thermophysical properties and enhancement behavior of novel B4C-nanoadditive RT35HC nanocomposite phase change materials: Structural, morphological, thermal energy storage and thermal stability

This study aims to enhancement the thermal conductivity of RT35HC, as a commercial paraffin, by integrating boron carbide (B4C) nanoparticles for the first time, thereby producing B4C-nanoadditive nanocomposite PCMs. The B4C nanoparticles were reinforcement to RT35HC at mass fraction percentages (wt.%) of 0.5, 1, 1.5 and 2 by melting and physical mixing method. The structural and morphological characteristics of both pure and nanocomposite PCMs were examined using XRD, FT-IR, FE-SEM, and EDX. Thermal properties were investigated through DSC, TGA/DTA, and thermal conductivity measurements using the KD2-Pro device. The Gaussian process regression (GPR) model was used to analyze the Cp values in relation to temperature and additive ratio. Structural and morphological analysis results indicated a homogeneous distribution of nanoparticles within the PCM matrix, without any significant chemical or physical alterations. The introduction of B4C-nanoadditive did not markedly affect the melting and solidification temperatures. However, melting and solidification enthalpies decreased proportionally with increased nanoadditive ratios, with the greatest reductions being 7.44 % and 5.74 % at a 2 wt% nanoaddition rate, respectively. As the nanoadditive ratio increased, the thermal conductivity (k) and specific heat capacity (Cp) of RT35HC in both solid and liquid-phases enhanced significantly. Specifically, solid-phase (25 °C) k values increased by 67.51 % from 0.197 to 0.33, and liquid-phase (50 °C) k values by 15.29 % from 0.170 to 0.196. The highest Cp values in the solid and liquid-phases were measured as 3.01 and 2.49, respectively, in the nanocomposite with a high nanoadditive ratio. The GPR method yielded a success rate of 0.9015. Additionally, the nanocomposites exhibited enhanced thermal stability and higher thermal decomposition temperatures. Based on these characterizations, the fabricated B4C-nanoadditive nanocomposite PCMs show promise for application in TES and TM systems.

Nanocrystalline Y2O3-modified metal matrix composite coatings with improved resistance to thermocyclic oxidation and V2O5-induced type II hot corrosion

Incorporating reactive elements (RE) into turbine coatings is a well-established surface treatment. However, suboptimal RE concentrations can lead to compromised strength, heightened brittleness, and reduced adhesion. In contrast, RE oxides offer advantages of avoiding these detrimental effects, counteracting corrosion phenomena induced by V2O5 compounds and enhancing oxidation resistance. A notable challenge lies in optimizing RE oxide particle incorporation and understanding the influence of particles in coating microstructures. This study focuses on developing NiAl and Ni-Cr-Al type metal matrix composite (MMC) coatings on Inconel 617 (IN617), containing up to 11 vol% of Yttria (Y2O3) nanoparticles. Y2O3 nanoparticles and Ni were co-electrodeposited on IN617 followed by either pack aluminizing or a two-step chromizing and aluminizing process. An even distribution of Y2O3 nanoparticles was observed throughout the entire 100 μm coating thickness, leading to significant grain refinement in the sub-micron to nano range in both coating types. Y2O3-strengthened coatings were subjected to oxidation at 1100 °C and hot corrosion at 700 °C and were compared to their Y2O3-free counterparts. Present at grain boundaries, Y2O3 markedly enhanced the oxidation and corrosion resistance by reducing interdiffusion, improving the oxide scale adherence and binding V2O5, highlighting the potential of this method for advanced turbine blade coatings.

Deep insight into physical properties of carboxymethyl cellulose-barium oxide nanocomposites

Nanocomposites, blending the unique properties of inorganic nanoparticles with polymers, are gaining momentum in various industries. This study delves into the synthesis and characterization of barium oxide (BaO)-doped carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) nanocomposites, focusing on their structural, optical, electrical, and dielectric properties. Using an in-situ polymerization method, CMC films were doped with 5 % and 10 % BaO nanoparticles. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that the doped samples exhibited enhanced crystallinity compared to pure CMC, with crystallinity percentages measured at 37.95 % and 28.86 % for 5 % and 10 % BaO, respectively, indicating the successful incorporation of BaO. Scanning electron microscopy illustrated the distribution of BaO nanoparticles, showing spherical agglomerations on the film surface. SEM analysis reveals emergence of spherical agglomerations and bright spots on nanocomposite film surface upon BaO introduction, indicating BaO nanoparticles presence. Further, the BaO nanoparticles act as catalytic and nucleating agents, influencing crystalline structure nucleation and growth, potentially enhancing film homogeneity and structural integrity. In addition, UV–visible spectroscopy elucidated the optical properties, indicating a shift in the bandgap from indirect to direct with BaO addition. The bandgap values decrease upon the addition of BaO, indicating a transition from an amorphous to a nanocrystalline structure, with respective reduction percentages of 22.73 % and 10.71 % for the 5%BaO/CMC and 10 %BaO/CMC samples compared to CMC. Electrical conductivity measurements showed enhanced conductivity in 10 % BaO/CMC due to improved charge carrier mobility, supported by dielectric studies demonstrating increased dielectric. The introduction of 5 % and 10 % BaO resulted in reductions of approximately 62.06 % and 65.77 %, respectively, compared to the pure CMC sample. This decrease in dielectric loss indicates an enhancement in the electrical properties of the nanocomposites. This comprehensive investigation could give further insights into the different properties of BaO-doped CMC nanocomposites, offering insights into their potential applications in various fields such as electronics, energy storage, and optoelectronics.

Enhanced fabrication of size-controllable chitosan-genipin nanoparticles using orifice-induced hydrodynamic cavitation: Process optimization and performance evaluation

Chitosan nanoparticles (NPs) possess great potential in biomedical fields. Orifice-induced hydrodynamic cavitation (HC) has been used for the enhancement of fabrication of size-controllable genipin-crosslinked chitosan (chitosan-genipin) NPs based on the emulsion cross-linking (ECLK). Experiments have been performed using various plate geometries, chitosan molecular weight and under different operational parameters such as inlet pressure (1–3.5 bar), outlet pressure (0–1.5 bar) and cross-linking temperature (40–70 °C). Orifice plate geometry was a crucial factor affecting the properties of NPs, and the optimized geometry of orifice plate was with single hole of 3.0 mm diameter. The size of NPs with polydispersity index of 0.359 was 312.6 nm at an optimized inlet pressure of 3.0 bar, and the maximum production yield reached 84.82 %. Chitosan with too high or too low initial molecular weight (e.g., chitosan oligosaccharide) was not applicable for producing ultra-fine and narrow-distributed NPs. There existed a non-linear monotonically-increasing relationship between cavitation number (Cv) and chitosan NP size. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) test indicated that the prepared NPs were discrete with spherical shape. The study demonstrated the superiority of HC in reducing particle size and size distribution of NPs, and the energy efficiency of orifice type HC-processed ECLK was two orders of magnitude than that of ultrasonic horn or high shear homogenization-processed ECLK. In vitro drug-release studies showed that the fabricated NPs had great potential as a drug delivery system. The observations of this study can offer strong support for HC to enhance the fabrication of size-controllable chitosan-genipin NPs.

CCK Receptor Inhibition Reduces Pancreatic Tumor Fibrosis and Promotes Nanoparticle Delivery.

The poor prognosis for pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) patients is due in part to the highly fibrotic nature of the tumors that impedes delivery of therapeutics, including nanoparticles (NPs). Our prior studies demonstrated that proglumide, a cholecystokinin receptor (CCKR) antagonist, reduced fibrosis pervading PanIN lesions in mice. Here, we further detail how the reduced fibrosis elicited by proglumide achieves the normalization of the desmoplastic tumor microenvironment (TME) and improves nanoparticle uptake. One week following the orthotopic injection of PDAC cells, mice were randomized to normal or proglumide-treated water for 3-6 weeks. Tumors were analyzed ex vivo for fibrosis, vascularity, stellate cell activation, vascular patency, and nanoparticle distribution. The histological staining and three-dimensional imaging of tumors each indicated a reduction in stromal collagen in proglumide-treated mice. Proglumide treatment increased tumor vascularity and decreased the activation of cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs). Additionally, PANC-1 cells with the shRNA-mediated knockdown of the CCK2 receptor showed an even greater reduction in collagen, indicating the CCK2 receptors on tumor cells contribute to the desmoplastic TME. Proglumide-mediated reduction in fibrosis also led to functional changes in the TME as evidenced by the enhanced intra-tumoral distribution of small (<12 nm) Rhodamine-loaded nanoparticles. The documented in vivo, tumor cell-intrinsic anti-fibrotic effects of CCK2R blockade in both an immunocompetent syngeneic murine PDAC model as well as a human PDAC xenograft model demonstrates that CCK2R antagonists, such as proglumide, can improve the delivery of nano-encapsulated therapeutics or imaging agents to pancreatic tumors.
