Inferring the spin distribution of binary black holes using deep learning

Abstract The spin characteristics of black holes offer valuable insights into the evolutionary pathways of their progenitor stars, crucial for understanding the broader population properties of black holes. Traditional Hierarchical Bayesian inference techniques employed to discern these properties often entail substantial time investments, and consensus regarding the spin distribution of Binary Black Hole (BBH) systems remains elusive. In this study, leveraging observations from GWTC-3, we adopt a machine learning approach to infer the spin distribution of black holes within BBH systems. Specifically, we develop a Deep Neural Network (DNN) and train it using data generated from a Beta distribution. Our training strategy, involving the segregation of data into 10 bins, not only expedites model training but also enhances the DNN's versatility and adaptability to accommodate the burgeoning volume of gravitational wave observations. Utilizing Monte Carlo-bootstrap (MC-bootstrap) to generate observation-simulated samples, we derive spin distribution parameters: $\alpha=1.3^{+0.25}_{-0.18},\beta=1.70^{+0.24}_{-0.29}$ for the larger BH sample and $\alpha=1.37^{+0.31}_{-0.20},\beta=1.63^{+0.30}_{-0.20}$ for the smaller BH sample. Within our constraints, the distributions of component spin magnitudes suggest the likelihood of both black holes in the BBH merger possessing non-zero spin.

An Extreme Black Hole in the Recurrent X-Ray Transient XTE J2012+381

Abstract The black hole (BH) candidate XTE J2012+381 underwent an outburst at the end of 2022. We analyzed 105 NICER observations and two NuSTAR observations of the source during the outburst. The NuSTAR observations of the M ∼ 10 M ⊙ BH indicate clear signs of relativistic disk reflection, which we modeled to measure a BH spin of a = 0.988 − 0.030 + 0.008 and an inclination of θ = 68 − 11 + 6 deg (1σ statistical errors). In our analysis, we test an array of models and examine the effect of fitting NuSTAR spectra alone versus fitting simultaneously with NICER. We find that when the underlying continuum emission is properly accounted for, the reflected emission is similarly characterized by multiple models. We combined 52 NICER spectra to obtain a spectrum with an effective exposure of 190 ks in order to probe the presence of absorption lines that would be suggestive of disk winds, but the resulting features were not statistically significant. We discuss the implications of this measurement in relation to the overall BH spin distribution in X-ray binary systems.

Constraints on an axionlike particle from black hole spin superradiance

The mass of the axion-like particles could be constrained by the observed black hole spin distribution. In this work, we update the previous calculations using the recently improved superradiance formula, which is much more accurate. The effect of the merger time scale is also carefully investigated with Bayesian analysis. After integration of the merger time $\tau_\mathrm{M}$, we find two favoured mass ranges $7.94\times10^{-13}~\text{eV}\leq\mu\leq8.71\times10^{-13}~\text{eV}$ and $1.44\times10^{-12}~\text{eV}\leq\mu\leq1.74\times10^{-12}~\text{eV}$ . These two favored ranges do not depend on the prior distribution of the $\tau_\mathrm{M}$. We also find the strength of evidence for the range $-12.80\leq\log_{10}(\mu/\text{eV})\leq-12.34$, which is excluded in the analysis with fixed $\tau_\text{M}$, could increase by several orders of magnitude with $\tau_\mathrm{M}$ averaged.

No Evidence that the Majority of Black Holes in Binaries Have Zero Spin

The spin properties of merging black holes observed with gravitational waves can offer novel information about the origin of these systems. The magnitudes and orientations of black hole spins offer a record of binaries’ evolutionary history, encoding information about massive stellar evolution and the astrophysical environments in which binary black holes are assembled. Recent analyses of the binary black hole population have yielded conflicting portraits of the black hole spin distribution. Some works suggest that black hole spins are small but nonzero and exhibit a wide range of misalignment angles relative to binaries’ orbital angular momenta. Other works conclude that the majority of black holes are nonspinning while the remainder are rapidly rotating and primarily aligned with their orbits. We revisit these conflicting conclusions, employing a variety of complementary methods to measure the distribution of spin magnitudes and orientations among binary black hole mergers. We find that the existence of a subpopulation of black holes with vanishing spins is not required by current data. Should such a subpopulation exist, we conclude that it must contain ≲60% of binaries. Additionally, we find evidence for significant spin–orbit misalignment among the binary black hole population, with some systems exhibiting misalignment angles greater than 90°, and see no evidence for an approximately spin-aligned subpopulation.

The Binary Black Hole Spin Distribution Likely Broadens with Redshift

The population-level distributions of the masses, spins, and redshifts of binary black holes (BBHs) observed using gravitational waves can shed light on how these systems form and evolve. Because of the complex astrophysical processes shaping the inferred BBH population, models allowing for correlations among these parameters will be necessary to fully characterize these sources. We hierarchically analyze the BBH population detected by LIGO and Virgo with a model allowing for correlations between the effective aligned spin and the primary mass and redshift. We find that the width of the effective spin distribution grows with redshift at 98.6% credibility. We determine this trend to be robust under the application of several alternative models and additionally verify that such a correlation is unlikely to be spuriously introduced using a simulated population. We discuss the possibility that this correlation could be due to a change in the natal black hole spin distribution with redshift.

Measuring the Properties of Active Galactic Nuclei Disks with Gravitational Waves

Active galactic nuclei (AGNs) are promising environments for the assembly of merging binary black hole (BBH) systems. Interest in AGNs as nurseries for merging BBHs is rising, following the detection of gravitational waves from a BBH system from the purported pair-instability mass gap, most notably GW190521. AGNs have also been invoked to explain the formation of the high-mass-ratio system GW190814. We draw on simulations of BBH systems in AGNs to propose a phenomenological model for the distribution of black hole spins of merging binaries in AGN disks. The model incorporates distinct features that make the AGN channel potentially distinguishable from other channels, such as assembly in the field and in globular clusters. The model parameters can be mapped heuristically to the age and density of the AGN disks. We estimate the extent to which different populations of mergers in AGNs can be distinguished. If the majority of merging black holes are assembled in AGNs, future gravitational-wave observations may provide insights into the dynamics of AGN disks.

Building Better Spin Models for Merging Binary Black Holes: Evidence for Nonspinning and Rapidly Spinning Nearly Aligned Subpopulations

Abstract Recent work paints a conflicting portrait of the distribution of black hole spins in merging binaries measured with gravitational waves. Some analyses find that a significant fraction of merging binaries contain at least one black hole with a spin tilt >90° with respect to the orbital angular momentum vector, which has been interpreted as a signature for dynamical assembly. Other analyses find that the data are consistent with a bimodal population in which some binaries contain black holes with negligible spin while the rest contain black holes with spin vectors preferentially aligned with the orbital angular momentum vector. In this work, we scrutinize models for the distribution of black hole spins to pinpoint possible failure modes in which the model yields a faulty conclusion. We reanalyze data from the second LIGO–Virgo gravitational-wave transient catalog (GWTC-2) using a revised spin model, which allows for a subpopulation of black holes with negligible spins. In agreement with recent results by Roulet et al., we show that the GWTC-2 detections are consistent with two distinct subpopulations. We estimate that 69%–90% (90% credible interval) of merging binaries contain black holes with negligible spin χ ≈ 0. The remaining binaries are part of a second subpopulation in which the spin vectors are preferentially (but not exactly) aligned to the orbital angular momentum. The black holes in this second subpopulation are characterized by spins of χ ∼ 0.5. We suggest that the inferred spin distribution is consistent with the hypothesis that all merging binaries form via the field formation scenario.

Constraints on Ultralight Scalar Bosons within Black Hole Spin Measurements from the LIGO-Virgo GWTC-2.

Clouds of ultralight bosons-such as axions-can form around a rapidly spinning black hole, if the black hole radius is comparable to the bosons' wavelength. The cloud rapidly extracts angular momentum from the black hole, and reduces it to a characteristic value that depends on the boson's mass as well as on the black hole mass and spin. Therefore, a measurement of a black hole mass and spin can be used to reveal or exclude the existence of such bosons. Using the black holes released by LIGO and Virgo in their GWTC-2, we perform a simultaneous measurement of the black hole spin distribution at formation and the mass of the scalar boson. We find that the data strongly disfavor the existence of scalar bosons in the mass range between 1.3×10^{-13} and 2.7×10^{-13} eV. Our mass constraint is valid for bosons with negligible self-interaction, that is, with a decay constant f_{a}≳10^{14} GeV. The statistical evidence is mostly driven by the two binary black holes systems GW190412 and GW190517, which host rapidly spinning black holes. The region where bosons are excluded narrows down if these two systems merged shortly (∼10^{5} yr) after the black holes formed.

When will we observe binary black holes precessing?

After eleven gravitational-wave detections from compact-binary mergers, we are yet to observe the striking general-relativistic phenomenon of orbital precession. Measurements of precession would provide valuable insights into the distribution of black-hole spins, and therefore into astrophysical binary formation mechanisms. Using our recent two-harmonic approximation of precessing-binary signals~\cite{Fairhurst:2019_2harm}, we introduce the ``precession signal-to-noise ratio'', $\rho_p$. We demonstrate that this can be used to clearly identify whether precession was measured in an observation (by comparison with both current detections and simulated signals), and can immediately quantify the measurability of precession in a given signal, which currently requires computationally expensive parameter-estimation studies. $\rho_p$ has numerous potential applications to signal searches, source-property measurements, and population studies. We give one example: assuming one possible astrophysical spin distribution, we predict that precession has a one in $\sim 25$ chance of being observed in any detection.

Implications from Late-time X-Ray Detections of Optically Selected Tidal Disruption Events: State Changes, Unification, and Detection Rates

Abstract We present Chandra X-ray observations of four optically selected tidal disruption events (TDEs) obtained 4–9 yr after discovery. Three sources were detected with luminosities between 9 × 1040 and 3 × 1042 erg s−1. The spectrum of PTF09axc is consistent with a power law of index 2.5 ± 0.1, whereas the spectrum of PTF09ge is very soft. The power-law spectrum of PTF09axc and prior literature findings provide evidence that TDEs transition from an early-time soft state to a late-time hard state many years after disruption. We propose that the time to peak luminosity for optical and X-ray emission may differ substantially in TDEs, with X-rays being produced or becoming observable later. This delay helps explain the differences in observed properties such as L opt/L X of optically and X-ray-selected TDEs. We update TDE rate predictions for the eROSITA instrument: it ranges from 3 to 990 yr−1, depending sensitively on the distribution of black hole spins and the time delay between disruption and peak X-ray brightness. We further predict an asymmetry in the number of retrograde and prograde disks in samples of optically and X-ray-selected TDEs. The details of the observational biases can contribute to observed differences between optically and X-ray-selected TDEs (with optically selected TDEs being fainter in X-rays for retrograde TDE disks).

Constraining Black Hole Spins with Gravitational-wave Observations

Abstract The observation of gravitational-wave signals from merging black hole binaries enables direct measurement of the properties of the black holes. An individual observation allows measurement of the black hole masses, but only limited information about either the magnitude or orientation of the black hole spins is available, primarily due to the degeneracy between measurements of spin and binary mass-ratio. Using the first six black hole merger observations, we are able to constrain the distribution of black hole spins. We perform model selection between a set of models with different spin population models, combined with a power-law mass distribution, to make inferences about the spin distribution. We assume a fixed power-law mass distribution for the black holes, which is supported by the data and provides a realistic distribution of the binary mass-ratio. This allows us to accurately account for selection effects due to variations in the signal amplitude with spin magnitude, and provides an improved inference on the spin distribution. We conclude that the first six LIGO and Virgo observations disfavor highly spinning black holes against low spins by an odds ratio of 15:1, thus providing strong constraints on spin magnitudes from gravitational-wave observations. Furthermore, we are able to rule out a population of binaries with completely aligned spins, even when the spins of the individual black holes are low, at an odds ratio of 22000:1, significantly strengthening earlier evidence against aligned spins. These results provide important information that will aid in our understanding of the formation processes of black holes.

A selection effect boosting the contribution from rapidly spinning black holes to the cosmic X-ray background

The Cosmic X-ray Background (CXB) is the total emission from past accretion activity onto supermassive black holes in active galactic nuclei (AGN) and peaks in the hard X-ray band (30 keV). In this paper, we identify a significant selection effect operating on the CXB and flux-limited AGN surveys, and outline how they must depend heavily on the spin distribution of black holes. We show that, due to the higher radiative efficiency of rapidly-spinning black holes, they will be over-represented in the X-ray background, and therefore could be a dominant contributor to the CXB. Using a simple bimodal spin distribution, we demonstrate that only 15 per cent maximally-spinning AGN can produce 50 per cent of the CXB. We also illustrate that invoking a small population of maximally-spinning black holes in CXB synthesis models can reproduce the CXB peak without requiring large numbers of Compton-thick AGN. The spin bias is even more pronounced for flux-limited surveys: 7 per cent of sources with maximally-spinning black holes can produce half of the source counts. The detectability for maximum spin black holes can be further boosted in hard (>10 keV) X-rays by up to ~60 per cent due to pronounced ionised reflection, reducing the percentage of maximally spinning black holes required to produce half of the CXB or survey number counts further. A host of observations are consistent with an over-representation of high-spin black holes. Future NuSTAR and ASTRO-H hard X-ray surveys will provide the best constraints on the role of spin within the AGN population.

THE SPIN OF THE SUPERMASSIVE BLACK HOLE IN NGC 3783

The Suzaku AGN Spin Survey is designed to determine the supermassive black hole spin in six nearby active galactic nuclei (AGN) via deep Suzaku stares, thereby giving us our first glimpse of the local black hole spin distribution. Here, we present an analysis of the first target to be studied under the auspices of this Key Project, the Seyfert galaxy NGC 3783. Despite complexity in the spectrum arising from a multi-component warm absorber, we detect and study relativistic reflection from the inner accretion disk. Assuming that the X-ray reflection is from the surface of a flat disk around a Kerr black hole, and that no X-ray reflection occurs within the general relativistic radius of marginal stability, we determine a lower limit on the black hole spin of a > 0.88 (99% confidence). We examine the robustness of this result to the assumption of the analysis, and present a brief discussion of spin-related selection biases that might affect flux-limited samples of AGN.

The Influence of Merges with Various Mass Ratios on the Spins of Black Holes

The distribution of black hole spins in consideration of only the effect of merges is discussed. The angular momentum after merging is treated via the post-Newtonian approximation, and the effects of merges under different conditions are simulated by adopting the Monte Carlo method. The obtained results indicate that the major merge cannot make the distribution of black hole spins stable, but the minor merge can make the black hole spin smoothly slow down. The distribution of black hole spins can stay at a stable level with the overwhelming proportion of small spins, when the mass ratio of merging black holes takes the form of power-law function. In addition, based on the simulated results, the possible relationship between radio-loud active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and black hole spins is also discussed. Finally, the distribution of radio loudness is calculated and presented.

Black Hole Spin and Galactic Morphology

We investigate the conjecture by Sikora, Stawarz, and Lasota that the observed active galactic nuclei (AGNs) radio loudness bimodality can be explained by the morphology-related bimodality of black hole spin distribution in the centers of galaxies: central black holes (BHs) in giant elliptical galaxies may have (on average) much larger spins than black holes in spiral/disk galaxies. We study how accretion from a warped disk influences the evolution of black hole spins and conclude that within the cosmological framework, where the most massive BHs have grown in mass via merger-driven accretion, one indeed expects most supermassive black holes in elliptical galaxies to have on average higher spin than black holes in spiral galaxies, where random, small accretion episodes (e.g., tidally disrupted stars, accretion of molecular clouds) might have played a more important role.

On the spin paradigm and the radio dichotomy of quasars

We investigate whether models based on the assumption that jets in quasars are powered by rotating black holes can explain the observed radio dichotomy of quasars. We show that in terms of the ‘spin paradigm’ models, radio-loud quasars could be objects in which the rotation rate of the black hole corresponds to an equilibrium between spin-up by accretion and spin-down by the Blandford-Znajek mechanism. Radio-quiet quasars could be hosting black holes with an average spin much smaller than the equilibrium one. We discuss possible accretion scenarios which can lead to such a bimodal distribution of black hole spins.
