Empowering process safety hazard awareness and technical learning in energy operations

The Process Safety Management discipline is still misunderstood and deemed complex despite the efforts and progress that have been made over the past decades in the energy industry. This is important as the energy industry turns towards the energy transition and needs to remember the fundamentals of managing process safety risks in emerging technologies. At Origin Energy, leadership, risk management and learning are tightly connected when it comes to ensuring good process safety. In this context, Origin Energy’s Integrated Gas Business Unit has implemented Process Safety Management initiatives over the last 5 years grouped under three Process Safety Management strategic pillars: empowered process safety leadership; open-minded learning culture and best practice process hazard management. The aim of these initiatives was to develop a heightened process safety culture across the business unit. The approach used was to demystify process safety concepts to generate engagement and ownership at all levels. This was supplemented with implementing a companywide Engineering and Technical Community of Practice to enable sharing of technical learning across boundaries and building strong process safety risk awareness foundations supported by a Process Hazard Analysis Revalidation program.

Engaging teacher’s mental health self-care early through a trauma-informed microcredential

PurposeThe purpose of this study was to examine how beginning teachers’ participation in a microcredential based on trauma-informed classroom management and restorative discipline (TIMRD) practices might enhance their self-efficacy (SE), through an understanding of their own trauma response, its neurobiological basis and classroom interventions that focus on student wellness and teacher self-care.Design/methodology/approachUsing a single case study design, participants completed a pre- and post-assessment before and after completion of a TIMRD microcredential.FindingsA total of seven teaching fellows completed the microcredential process. Results indicate that the use of a microcredential for professional learning assisted with decreasing sense of burnout while increasing professional SE, SE related to classroom management and instructional strategies (ISs).Originality/valueNew teachers commonly struggle with a lack of professional efficacy for a variety of reasons, yet all teachers present with their own personal trauma. Increasing new teachers’ sense of resilience through addressing their own trauma and the impact of student trauma is integral to increasing teaching SE and reducing rates of burnout.

A cross-disciplinary evaluation of digitally recorded feedback in higher education

Research demonstrates that assessment feedback created using audio, video, and screencast recordings can offer advantages over text-based feedback. However, the majority of research and experience in this domain has largely been limited to a single disciplinary or cohort context. This project aimed to empirically investigate if recorded feedback (i.e. audio, video, and screencast) could be effectively implemented across different contexts, including disciplines. As part of this, teaching staff from five discrete subjects provided digitally recorded feedback to students on at least one assessment task. Assessment types included various forms of written assignments, completed by individuals or groups of students. This paper reports on survey data collected from 351 students who received recorded feedback or text-based feedback. Survey respondents were enrolled in five subjects across four disciplines (Education, Pharmacy, Engineering, and Management). To triangulate the survey findings, interview data from nine students are also included. Overall, the findings indicate that students in all disciplines found digitally recorded feedback to be more satisfying, more useful, and more engaging than text-based feedback alone. However, these outcomes differed across contexts; results tended to be elevated in subjects with smaller cohorts, and when richer audiovisual modalities were used. In two of the cases students, while still being overall positive, indicated that the feedback was less clear, usable and satisfying than indicated in other cases. These differences are explored and issues of teacher experience, cohort size, group assessment, and disciplinary cognate traditions are considered.

From vocation to profession: multiple identities of Chinese management academics

The academic landscape in China has undergone a profound transformation, shifting from a spiritually rooted vocation to a model driven by managerial efficiency, catalyzed by market reforms that dismantled the traditional, centrally planned system. This seismic shift has forced scholars to adapt to a performance-oriented environment, leading to significant transformations in their professional identities. Contemporary literature, primarily centered on Western role-theory perspectives, often fails to capture the intricate cognitive dynamics that shape academic identities under the varied influence of power dimensions. This study addresses this gap by exploring how Chinese academics’ identities are constructed amidst a complex interplay of power dynamics, external changes, and internal motivations, moving beyond simplistic group-level categorizations. Employing an intersectional approach within a multidimensional organizational power framework, this research utilizes case study methods to probe deeply into the multiple identities of academics in the Business Management discipline across various Chinese higher education institutions. The study reveals a dynamic interplay among multiple power dimensions, including American research hegemony, industrialization of academic governance, self-regulation, and rebellion against ‘academic games’. These forces collectively shape distinct identity modules among Chinese academics: fanatic convert of American research, career survivor, diligent game player, and career retreater, each responding uniquely to the evolving academic pressures. This research significantly enhances our understanding of academic identity construction by extending beyond traditional role-based analyses to encompass a broader spectrum of cognitive processes. It highlights the nuanced intersectionality of academic identities, effectively integrating structuralist perspectives with personal agency. This comprehensive examination provides critical insights into the development of Management disciplines, university governance, and professional practices within the academic community in China.

Relevance of classical management concepts in the contemporary era – a case study of Fayol’s principles

Purpose This hypothetical case study aims to revisit the classical model given by Henri Fayol whereby he put forward a set of 14 principles to guide managers in decision-making across organizations. The case study showcases the dilemma in which the top manager of an automobile company finds himself when some of the very basic principles – on which the whole discipline of management is founded – are ignored. It will also serve as an aid for faculty members in B-Schools to teach students the significance of basic management principles postulated many years back which stand relevant even in contemporary times.Design/methodology/approach This case study is based on a hypothetical scenario in the corporate world. Different incidents in a fictitious automobile manufacturing firm are presented and the corresponding principles given by Henri Fayol are inferred.FindingsThis case study highlights that decision-making gets complicated if fundamental principles of management are not complied with. The decision taken during each and every situation which has been discussed in this case study is contrary to the correct course of action as propounded by Fayol. Modern-day managers must acknowledge the relevance and importance of these principles for achieving success in business.Originality/value This case study underscores that even in this volatile business environment where most of the management practices are technology-driven, we cannot disregard the most elementary rules of management. The managers working at different levels in the organizational hierarchy may be guided to make the right decisions in situations similar to the ones described.

Experiments in supply chain management research: A systematic review and future directions

AbstractThe supply chain management discipline has seen a tremendous growth in the use of experimental methods. Given the large number of published studies, the time seems opportune to systematically review the use of such approaches. In this note, we consider multiple dimensions of experimental design used in articles published in six of our premier journals. We present these findings and contemplate opportunities for future applications of experimental methods. In particular, we highlight a need to more regularly conduct and report on the results of power analyses and experimental checks, more carefully contemplate the justification and use of WEIRD (Western, educated, industrial, rich, and democratic) participants, develop and test mediated theoretical models, and increase our focus on teams as the unit of analysis when using experimental methods.

How to strategically respond to online hotel reviews: A strategy-aware deep learning approach

Online reviews exert a considerable influence on consumer purchase behavior, yet there remains ambiguity about the most effective managerial response strategies for positive and negative reviews. Addressing this gap, our study introduces a Strategy-Aware, Deep Learning-Based Natural Language Processing (Sa-DLNLP) model designed to optimize firm responses. The proposed model underwent rigorous evaluation through a human-coded study and was subsequently validated by a separate user response study. Our findings reveal that active-constructive responses significantly enhance the impact of positive reviews, whereas passive-constructive strategies are more effective in mitigating the damage from negative reviews. Additionally, the study underscores the importance of concise, personalized, and prompt responses across the board. Interestingly, responses that are overly explanatory, excessively empathetic, or challenge customers were found to be counterproductive when dealing with negative reviews. This study not only demystifies the art of managing online reviews but also offers an advanced deep learning methodology that can directly benefit the disciplines of Information Systems and Management.

Organizational Resilience: A Key Factor for Business Survival and Value Creation – A Secondary Publication

The lodging and restaurant services sector in the city of Pereira presents complex situations generated by the turbulence of the new business game. Companies that survive the new challenges and those recently established require strategies that allow them to extend their life expectancy. Therefore, the study aims to identify how to apply resilience and management disciplines in a tool that allows companies in the sector under study to sufficiently face situations of high complexity. Achieving this objective requires knowing the causes of the short life span of many companies, identifying how surviving companies articulate management disciplines with their strategic objectives, and analyzing the possibility of formulating an organizational model based on resilience as a value. The methodology applied was mixed. The sample was simply random; 23 companies were analyzed through structured interviews and participant observation. As the most significant results: the deficient application of management disciplines was identified as an important cause of company closures; the level of acceptance to implement the practice of resilience and management disciplines in companies; and the way to apply resilience and management disciplines in an instrument that builds value. It was concluded that an organizational model should be formulated where resilience and management disciplines are applied to face times of crisis.

Customer experience (CX), employee experience (EX) and human experience (HX): introductions, interactions and interdisciplinary implications

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of what (service) experience is and examine it using three distinct perspectives: customer experience (CX), employee experience (EX) and human experience (HX).Design/methodology/approachThe present conceptualization blends the marketing and organizational behavior/human resources management (OB/HRM) disciplines to clarify and reflect over the meaning of (service) experience. The marketing discipline illuminates the concept of CX, whereas the OB/HRM discipline illuminates the concept of EX. The concept of HX, which transcends CX and EX, is examined in light of its recent development in service research. For each of the three concepts, key themes are identified, and future research directions are proposed.FindingsBecause the goal that individuals seek to achieve depends on the role they are enacting, each of the three perspectives on experience (CX, EX and HX) should have a different focal point. CX requires to focus on the process of solving customer goals. EX necessitates to think in terms of organizational context and job content that support employees. Finally, the focus of HX should be on well-being via enhanced gratification, and reduced violation, of basic human needs.Originality/valueThis paper offers an interdisciplinary perspective on (service) experience and simultaneously addresses CX, EX and HX in order to reconcile the different perspectives on experience in service research.

Entrepreneurship and organised crime: a systematic review and research agenda based on three decades of scholarship

PurposeScholarly interest in the business effects of organised crime (OC) has recently increased. This study aims to conduct a systematic literature review (SLR) on the conditions under which OC could pose a threat to or take control of firms within a particular context.Design/methodology/approachWe use narrative synthesis and thematic analysis, with a sample of 46 theoretical and empirical studies published over the past 30 years on the relationship between OC and firms within the disciplines of Business, Management and Accounting (BMA).FindingsSLR and thematic analysis show that scholarly interest has focused on four key domains: OC as a firm, the impact of OC on firms, firms’ efforts to counter OC’s influence and governmental interventions. Using medical metaphors, we also develop a diagram depicting the interplay between OC and firms within the BMA literature.Originality/valueThis study contributes to the literature shaping an agenda to steer future research towards these four key themes. The effectiveness of anti-OC tools and measures depends on a thorough understanding of local norms, behaviours and business practices. In addition to measurement and methodological challenges, several grey areas remain, including the distinction between criminal enterprises and legitimate businesses. Ambiguities also surround the circumstances under which the OC preys upon firms or employs them to establish dominance over a territory.

The Influence of the Principal’s Managerial Leadership and Work Discipline on SMA Teacher’s Performance

Education is the basic capital for improving the quality of good human resources and achieving success in the national development process in all fields. Education aims to provide various proactive and creative efforts by all components of the nation so that the young generation can develop optimally. School principals play an important role in efforts to mobilize teachers to have work performance, mature coordination, and leadership that is in harmony with the work environment. The aim of the research is to analyze the influence of managerial leadership, the work discipline of school principals, and the influence of both together on teacher performance in high schools throughout Banyuasin I Regency. This research was carried out at SMAN 1 Banyuasin I, SMAN 2 Banyuasin I, and SMA YP Mantra Mariana Banyuasin I Regency. This research uses descriptive analysis. The sampling methodology uses probability sampling. Research shows that the performance of teachers in high schools in Banyuasin I Regency is quite good, but there is a significant gap between the number of teachers and the number of students. The research results show that teacher performance at SMA Negeri 2 Banyuasin I is still low, with a high percentage of teachers in 2017/2018 and a low percentage of teachers in 2018/2019. This shows the need for further research regarding teacher management and teacher discipline to improve teacher performance in high schools throughout Banyuasin I Regency.

Prototypes as catalysts for cross-disciplinary collaboration: Viewpoints from applied food research and innovation

BackgroundPrototypes play a central role in applied food research and innovation (R&I), serving as the initial representations of new products, process, or project ideas. They function as "boundary objects", facilitating interdisciplinary dialogue, knowledge creation, and cooperation. Despite their significance, challenges arise due to the differing perspectives and creative behaviors of scientists in this field. This commentary addresses the question of how prototypes can foster collaboration across disciplines in applied food R&I. Scope and approachOur study explores the application of prototypes within the disciplines of innovation management, consumer and sensory science, and food science and technology. We provide an overview of the diverse roles of prototypes in the R&I process and elucidate their function of bridging interdisciplinary gaps and facilitating knowledge exchange. Furthermore, we analyze the use of prototypes across those disciplines, emphasizing their role as communication facilitators and mutual learning tools. Key findings and conclusionsWhile prototypes are indispensable in applied food R&I, they are predominantly employed in distinct phases according to the discipline, with a lack of interdisciplinary collaboration. However, we observed that prototypes often serve similar purposes across disciplines. Thus, we propose a wider integration of prototyping into research processes, to facilitate communication, improve mutual learning and knowledge exchange, and make research outputs easily transferable. Experienced facilitators should holistically manage diverse prototypes, fostering an iterative project model that transcends disciplinary boundaries. Our commentary emphasizes the transformative potential of prototypes advocating for their informed usage across disciplines to advance cross-disciplinary collaboration and align research outcomes with societal needs, thus supporting responsible applied food R&I.

Comprehensive Evaluation of Digital Strategies and Its Impact on Company Performance

Digitalization and digital transformation have garnered sustained interest and fascination among academics and business practitioners alike. The recent surge in the adoption of digital technologies and innovations across diverse organizations has elevated these topics to the forefront of discussions surrounding strategy, organizational dynamics, and the management of digital platforms. This rapid adoption has empowered fashion companies to enhance operational efficiency while nurturing environmental consciousness. To address existing research gaps, this study extends its scope to underexplored fashion industry, encompassing companies of varying sizes, both local and multinational, and under different ownership structures. The overarching objective is to provide a comprehensive evaluation of the implementation of digital strategies and their subsequent impact on company performance. This research constructs an integrated model that combines insights from strategic management and organizational capability disciplines, drawing inspiration from the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) and the Resource-Based View theory. The proposed research model aims to offer a cohesive, efficient, and structured framework that transcends fragmentation, facilitating the development of digital platforms. By embracing diverse contextual settings, this study endeavors to provide nuanced and universally relevant insights, thereby enriching the practical implications for businesses across diverse sectors. As organizations navigate the complex landscape of digital transformation, these insights hold potential for guiding effective strategy formulation and implementation.

A Review of Indigenous Knowledge Systems and Their Application in Sustainable Solid Waste Management

Indigenous communities have always used their knowledge systems to improve their quality of life. For example, rural communities’ resort to indigenous cultural practices to manage their own waste when local administration lacks coordinated ways to manage waste. In the context of indigenous knowledge systems, the idea of waste is non-existent. As indigenous knowledge is believed to provide a holistic framework for an approach that effectively promotes sustainability. As such, the current study conducted a systematic review to evaluate the extent to which indigenous solid waste management practices contribute to sustainable waste disposal methods. Using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses guidelines, a literature search was carried out in the field of indigenous solid waste management practices. The results indicate a significant imbalance in the amount of conclusive evidence that has been produced to date that suggests the sustainability of indigenous solid waste management practices. It is for this reason that the current study has discovered a substantial literature gap in sustainable solid waste management associated with indigenous knowledge systems. This is an unprecedented trend, especially for a knowledge system that is supposed to promote sustainability practices. However, to improve the likelihood of incorporating indigenous solid waste disposal methods into modern practices, it is imperative to understand the foundational elements that contribute to the advancement of sustainability, lest the sustainability aspect associated with this knowledge system in the discipline of solid waste management remain a mere rhetoric.

Exploring the relationship of psychological factors and adoption readiness in determining university teachers’ attitude on AI-based assessment systems

The increased use of artificial intelligence (AI) in management curricula raises the need to integrate AI into assessment systems. For this purpose, this study used anxiety and resistance to change with an integrated variable, adoption readiness' to examine university teachers' attitudes towards AI-based assessment systems. We collected data from university teachers in social sciences and management disciplines from West Malaysia. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was applied to determine the ability of the UTAUT model antecedent to the proposed method. After eliminating the distorting observed variable, this study used performance expectancy, effort expectancy, and facilitating conditions as ‘adoption readiness’. The results of path analysis indicated that (1) anxiety has a significant negative impact on adoption readiness and attitude of university teachers; (2) positive but insignificant impact of resistance to change on adoption readiness and attitude; (3) adoption readiness mediates the relationship between anxiety and attitude while; (4) no mediation role of adoption readiness was found between the relationship of resistance to change and attitude of the university teachers towards an AI-based assessment systems. This study significantly contributes to the existing pedagogical literature by synthesizing the UTAUT model's antecedents in a novel way to examine technology adoption readiness which further adds in the originality of this study.

In this study, the authors used qualitative research methods with descriptive research types. This type of descriptive research is research that uses methods by describing a result of the research. The aim is to provide an explanation, and validation of the phenomena that occur in the field. To overcome a crisis and issue that must be done by a PR in a company is to introduce and validate a penetration in the design and practice of corporate management with the aim to at least manage corporate public issues as well or even better than the traditional management of operations that only think about profit. just. Issues management is applied both opportunistically and offensively, evolving from being a reactive crisis prevention tool to maintaining a strategic management discipline. Attention from stakeholders and other interested public- advocacy organizations, non-governmental organizations, government departments and agencies, news media and opinion leaders is bringing these issues onto the public agenda. Issues management strategies and tactics have long been tools of organized labour, governments and even activists, not just corporations.

Human Resource Management by a company or organization is very necessary. This is because Human Resources are the main force in the success of a company or organization in achieving its goals. The consequences of poor HR management will be very visible and can be detrimental to the company or organization, such as decreased employee performance which can result in it being difficult to achieve the goals of the company or organization. Therefore, further research studies are needed regarding forms of HR management to improve employee performance. In this research, the author focuses on one form of HR management, namely compensation and work discipline, by examining further how compensation and the level of work discipline influence employee performance, especially in startup companies.

Theory as an engine: Illuminating “white space” of the SCM system of knowledge production

In this Notes & Debates essay, we contribute to debates about the discipline of supply chain management's (SCM) system of knowledge production. We do so by exploring the range of ways that the appropriate use of theory can be understood. We highlight that a preponderance of research assumes the role of theory as a camera: a means of attaining the clearest image of the world as it is, achieved through empiricism and/or modeling. We also illuminate the possibility, stemming from a performative view of science, to mobilize theory as an engine for transforming the world. By examining the range of possibilities for researchers using theory as an engine, and by documenting the scarcity of SCM literature that has pursued one of the multiple possible agendas, we illuminate “white space” of SCM research important for the further development of the discipline.

The origins of digital service innovation (DSI): systematic review of ontology and future research agenda

PurposeThe purpose of this study is to disclose ontology of DSI as a novel concept in servitization community, explore the research context and themes (i.e. technological and industrial sectors) where DSI emerges, unveil methodological complexities of the research on digital servitization and DSI and provide guidelines for future research avenues regarding DSI.Design/methodology/approachBearing in mind the relative novelty of DSI as a concept in servitization literature, the authors adopted a systematic literature review approach to identify 111 peer-reviewed articles published in English language and available in business and management disciplines via scholar databases (Scopus). The analysis of literature discloses descriptive and thematic insights regarding digital servitization and DSI.FindingsThe study provides valuable insights from the descriptive and thematic analyses where classification of articles per publication year, citations, methodology/type of the paper, geographical location of data collection, as well as industrial sector and technological contexts are discussed. Moreover, the unique value of this study is observed through its specific focus on the characteristics of DSI-related literature.Originality/valueThe study is among the first of its kind to provide extensive descriptive and thematic insights on the available literature dealing with digital servitization and DSI, mapping out prior research across a wide spectrum of publication outlets and illustrating the chronological evolution of research on digital servitization and DSI.
