Metal exchange reactions between divalent metal ions and their dithiocarbamate complexes in dimethyl sulfoxide: a kinetic and mechanistic study

The kinetics and mechanism of metal exchange between NiII, CuII, ZnII, CdII, PbII and HgII and their dithiocarbamate complexes have been studied in dimethyl sulfoxide. Two pathways for ligand transfer are observed. The first involves dissociation of dithiocarbamate from the metal complex followed by substitution at the metal ion, while the second involves direct electrophilic attack by the metal ion on the dithiocarbamate complex. The relative importance of the pathways depends on the stability of the complex and the substitution lability and electrophilic character of the metal ion. The stability of the dithiocarbamate complexes in dimethyl sulfoxide is in the order Hg > Cu > Ni > Pb ≈ Cd > Zn.

Composition and electronic spectra of some dimethyl sulfoxide complexes of transition metal ions

The dimethyl sulfoxide complexes of Cr(III), Mn(II) Mn(III), Fe(III), Co(II), Ni(II) and Cu(II) were obtained as their perchlorates and characterized by thorough chemical analysis and measurements of electronic spectra. The complexes are liable to incorporate extra dimethyl sulfoxide and perchloric acid beyond the composition M(DMSO) 6(ClO 4) n. Dimethyl sulfoxide is comparable to urea regarding its spectrochemical and nephelauxetic strength

Solvent effect on the complex formation of poly(methacrylic acid) with proton‐accepting polymers

AbstractA pair of polymers may interact with each other through hydrogen bond and form a polymer complex. Such polymer complex formation is affected by several chemical and physical factors, especially by solvent properties. This solvent effect was studied in the complex formation of poly(methacrylic acid) with a series of proton‐accepting polymers in aprotic solvents. The extraordinary behaviour of polymer complexes in dimethyl sulfoxide was well explained in terms of the strong interaction between proton‐donating polymer and dimethyl sulfoxide. In addition, a stronger proton‐accepting polymer, viz. poly(N,N‐dimethyl‐N′,N′,N″,N″‐tetramethylenephosphoramide), was synthesized. This polymer could form a polymer complex with poly(methacrylic acid) through hydrogen bond even in dimethyl sulfoxide. Selective polymer complex formation was achieved by controlling such solvent properties.

Solution growth of sparingly soluble single crystals from soluble complexes III. Growth of α-HgI 2 single crystals from dimethylsulfoxide complexes

The crystallization of α-HgI 2 in solution from dimethylsulfoxide complexes is analysed and explained by the shift of the chemical equilibria of formation of various complexes. The growth apparatus and the procedure are described. The growth results are presented in relation to the growth conditions. A screened seeding procedure is experimented. Habit changes caused by the selective adsorption of the complex compounds on the octahedron faces and by non-selective adsorption of cations on the prism faces are discussed. Some results of crystal characterization measurements, particularly γ-ray detection spectra are also presented.

Autoxidation of benzoin coupled to the oxygenation of the solvent by an oxocupric complex in dimethylsulfoxide

The catalytic activity of the autoxidation product of Cu(CH3CN)4BF4 in dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) on the oxidation of benzoin to benzil was studied. The stoichiometry for this reaction is: according to that of mixed function oxidases. The cuprous salt, as well as its autoxidation product in DMSO, was used as a catalyst. The kinetics of the oxidation were measured by monitoring the oxygen uptake manometrically or by means of an oxygen electrode. A mechanism explaining these kinetic results is proposed and parallels to biological systems are discussed.

The Kinetics and Mechanism of a Reaction in Which Ligand Substitution is Accompanied by a Spin-State Change: Observation of the Elusive Monodithiocarbamatonickel(II) Complex in Dimethyl Sulfoxide

In solutions in Me2SO containing low concentrations of diethyldithiocarbamate ion (dtc-) and very high concentrations of Ni(Me2SO)62+ ion, the hitherto undetected Ni(dtc)+ complex is kinetically stabilized and its electronic spectrum can be recorded. The mono complex is thermodynamically unstable and is converted into Ni(dtc)2 by two independent pathways, one involving direct reaction between Ni(dtc)+ and dtc-, the other being a dimerization reaction, 2Ni(dtc)+ → Ni2+ + Ni(dtc)2. Analysis of the mechanistic scheme Ni2+ + dtc ↔ Ni(dtc)2 Ni(dtc)+ + dtc- → Ni(dtc)2 2Ni(dtc)+ → Ni2+ + Ni(dtc)2 gives k1 = 3 × 103 l, mol-1 s-1, k-1 ≈ 0.01 s-1, k2 ≈ 4 × 105 l, mol-1 s-1 and k3 ≈ 1 × 103 l. mol-1 s-1. Coordinated dtc- exerts a significant labilizing effect on coordinated Me2SO molecules in Ni(dtc)+.

The response of cell walls of Bacillus subtilis to metals and to electron-microscopic stains.

Purified cell walls of Bacillus subtilis were subjected to solutions of 40 independent metals and the metal uptake, the electron-scattering power of thin sections, and the type of staining response evaluated. This was repeated for six typical electron-microscopic stains (uranyl acetate, uranyl magnesium acetate, osmium tetroxide, Os-meth, osmium-dimethylethylenediamine, and ruthenium red) and one new staining reagent (a potassium platinum chloride - dimethylsulfoxide complex) whose specificity is for amine functions. The reaction of select metals can be specific in terms of both uptake and staining response. Of the metals studied most transition elements had a high affinity for the wall fabric and some (i.e., Sc III, most lanthanides, UIV, ZrIV,HfIV, Fe III, Pd II, Ru III, and In III) may be suitable as contrasting agents for electron microscopy. Furthermore, when the thickness of metal-reacted walls was compared to freeze-each and ultracryotomy data, statistical-dimensional differences were commonly seen, which indicates that wall ultrastructure can be profoundly affected by the type of metal and (or) staining reagent.

Polarographic investigations on uranyl(Vl) complexes in dimethylsulfoxide. III. Halides and pseudohalides

The polarographic study of uranyl(IV)-halides complexes in DMS0 showed the formation of [UO2-F2] and [UO 2Cl] + stable species, while bromide and iodide ions do not form stable uranium(VI) complexes, in agreement with the “hard” character of uranyl ( VI) ion. The complexes formation between pseudohalides and uranium(VI) evidentiated the following species, stable enough to be polarographically revealed: [UO 2N 3 3] −, [UO 2CN) 2] and [UO 2(CN) 2]; on the contrary thiocyanate ion does not form sufficiently stable complex species in DMSO. Cyclic voltammetric tests were also performed to investtgate the anodic dissolution process of mercury in the presence of azide ion.

Polarographic investigations on uranyl(VI) complexes in dimethylsulfoxide. IV. Ammonia and polyamines

Abstract Complex formation of uranyl(VI) ion with ammonia and some polyamines has been studied by the polarographic technique at 25 °C in 0.1 M TBAP-DMSO solutions. The polarographic data could be explained in terms of the formation of the following complexes: [UO 2 (L) n ] 2+ where L = NH 3 , en, dmen and n = 2, 3; L = tn, hexn and n = 1, 2; L = tmen and n = 3; L = trien and n = 2. The relative coordinating abilities of the ligands have been discussed on the basis of the calculated β Ox /β Red values.

Vibrational analysis of oxygen-bonded sulfoxide complexes

A simple bent M←OL vibrational model has been used to estimate from ν(MO) and ν(SO) the force constants F MO and F OL for some O-bonded DMSO (dimethylsulfoxide), DMSO- d 6 and TMSO (tetramethylenesulfoxide) complexes. The correlation F OL = −(1.24 ± 0.2)F MO + (8.78 ± 0.12)mdyne/Å holds for all such complexes of the following metals in the oxidation states noted: Al III, Ca II, Cr III, Mn II, Fe II, Fe III, Co II, Ni II, Cu II, Ru II, Rh I, Rh III, Pd II, La III, Nd III, Yb III, Lu III, Pt II, Hg II, and is explained by a reduction of oxygen ( P π) → sulfur ( d π) double-bond character as the MO bond strengthens. The trend is usefully applied to aid the assignment of the i.r. spectra of a series of lanthanide(III)-DMSO complexes. The correlation does not hold for complexes of the group IVA and VA elements Sn IV, Sb III, Bi III and Bi V.
