Cultivation of Teenagers’ Digital Media Literacy and Network Legal Literacy in the Era of Digital Virtual Technology

Digital virtual technology with media survival as an important representation, with the rapid development of the new media technology represented by the Internet, digital virtual technology with its entertainment, personalized service, open sharing of content, form of real-time interaction and other characteristics strongly attract the young group. In the digital virtual era, teenagers’ digital media literacy has not only become one of the essential qualities for them to cope with global competition, but also an essential quality for college students to realize lifelong learning. Therefore, it is not only necessary but also urgent to carry out systematic digital media literacy education for adolescent groups. This study first discusses that the typical illegal phenomenon in the network is the problem caused by the lack of network legal awareness, and analyzes the level of media literacy of the subject media in these cases and whether the network legal awareness is weak. Finally, from the perspective of school education, social publicity and national system support, this paper puts forward some Suggestions on how to improve teenagers’ media literacy and cultivate their network legal literacy, so as to create a harmonious network environment. Establish a scientific and reasonable indicator system of youth network literacy, and build a youth network literacy training mechanism.

A digital media literacy intervention for older adults improves resilience to fake news

Older adults are especially susceptible to fake news online, possibly because they are less digitally literate compared to younger individuals. Interventions for older adults have emerged to improve digital literacy, although there has been little evaluation of their effectiveness in improving older adults’ resilience to fake news. We report the results of a digital literacy intervention for older adults administered during the 2020 U.S. election. The intervention was a 1-hour, self-directed series of interactive modules designed to teach concepts and skills for identifying misinformation online. Consistent with our pre-registered hypothesis, older adults (Mage = 67) in the treatment condition (N = 143) significantly improved their likelihood of accurately discerning fake from true news from 64% pre-intervention to 85% post-intervention. In contrast, older adults in the control condition (N = 238) did not significantly improve (from 55% to 57%). The treated older adults were also more likely to employ strategies for identifying misinformation online compared to pre-intervention and the control group.

The relationship between digital literacy, loneliness, quality of life, and health-promoting behaviors among the elderly in the age of COVID-19

Social distancing and the expansion of the digital environment due to the impact of COVID-19 are raising the need for digital literacy among the elderly for overall social participation such as mutual communication, health care, and education. The purpose of this study was to identify the correlation between digital literacy, loneliness, quality of life, and health promotion behaviors among the elderly aged between 65 and over and under 75 years. The data collection for this study was from May 1 to June 1, 2021, after approval from the C University Bioethics Review Committee using online questionnaires for 159 young-old elderly living in Korea. This study was a descriptive correlation study to understand the relationship between these variables for the young-old elderly. The collected data were analyzed using IBM SPSS WIN/25.0. The general characteristics were frequency, mean, and standard deviation, the difference of variables according to the general characteristics was analyzed by t-test and one-way ANOVA, and post-analysis was analyzed by Scheffe's test. The correlation between each variable was analyzed using Pearson's correlation. The subjects' digital media literacy was positively correlated with quality of life and health promotion behavior. Loneliness was inversely correlated with quality of life and health-promoting behavior. Quality of life was positively correlated with health-promoting behavior. Based on the results of this study, it is suggested that digital literacy education programs for the elderly in the future are necessary to reduce the elderly's feeling of loneliness and improve the quality of life and health promotion behaviors.

Students of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) and Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs): Viability of Digital Media Literacy in Pakistan

Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) have changed the dynamics of higher education institutions (HEIs) worldwide. The dependency of students on ICTs increased significantly and it considered requisite for modern higher education. Adverse impacts of ICTs studied by scholars on students of higher education that reflect ICTs are influencing social interaction pattern, cognition, academics and bring addiction. However, little work is done in HEIs to create curricula of digital media literacy which may reflect the demography of students and direct training and utility of ICTs that may mitigate adverse effect. This article argues that how students of HEIs use ICTs and what are the plausible actors that can contribute in the digital media literacy in Pakistan. For this purpose, a structured questionnaire is designed to collect the data from 640 respondents of two major public sector universities of Pakistan i.e. University of Sargodha and Bahauddin Zakariya University Multan through online survey on google form by distributing it to various online WhatsApp groups by convenience sampling technique. Actor Network Theory (ANT) is the conceptual framework of this study. The findings of the study reveal that significant respondents spent their large amount of time on ICTs for pleasure instead of necessity drive. However, findings reflect that ICTs are using by youth for various purposes that are education, political and religious information, and entertainment. Moreover, the significant respondents use ICTs for connect themselves with Internet, gaming consoles, movies, audio/video players and sharing of documents. The gender is also significant factor that contributes in the utility of ICTs. This article argues on digital media curriculum development in the universities of Pakistan..

The Influence of Google Classroom-Based Online Learning and Digital Media Literacy on Student Learning Achievement in Office Administration Education, Stambuk 2018

The purpose of this study was to find out whether there is an effect of online learning using the Google Classroom application and digital media literacy on the learning achievement of Stambuk 2018 office administration education students, Faculty of Economics. This type of research is ex post facto using a quantitative approach. The population is 59 students where the entire population is the sample. The data analysis techniques used in this study are Validity Test, Reliability Test, Normality Test, Linearity Test, Multicollinearity Test, T and F Test. The results of the t test calculation explain that there is an effect of online learning based on Google classroom on learning achievement. Then digital media literacy has a positive and significant effect on learning achievement.

The Authenticity of Digital News Coverage in the Mainstream Media in Japan

This research examines the authenticity of digital news coverage in the mainstream media in Japan via a specific case study, namely ‘Doctoral Students Have Decreased by Half’. In research, ‘fake news’ comprises two elements, facticity and intentionality; this study focuses on facticity or misinformation. Studies regarding ‘fake news’ are abundant, but those focussing on the mainstream digital media and Japan are highly scarce. This study applied a gap analysis, a comparison between the expected original information and the actual news coverage in a reversed direction. The study first detected and examined the original governmental data and announcements on which a series of news reports were based. Next, it drew a compare and contrast between the news on selective mainstream media and the original information. The reported drop in the number of doctoral students could be a ‘false alarm’ for prospective target audiences, implying that digital news portals may disseminate misinformation. The analysis also revealed that the current structure of digital news making, segmented into multiformat comprising headlines, texts, videos, captions, and others, may make the information verification process more complex and obstructed for individuals. The study also points at the risk of spread of misinformation and of memory retention, amplified by the use of culture-specific symbolic numbers, which weakens our reasoning ability. The findings emphasise the importance of updating our digital media literacy and making collaborative efforts to make local research internationally sharable to advance the understanding of ‘fake news’ research in this multimedia era.

Peran Kompetensi Literasi Digital Terhadap Konten Hoaks dalam Media Sosial

The rise of cases of spreading hoax news in Indonesia is a negative impact of the development of digital technology and social media which is not balanced with people's digital literacy. Cases of fake and fake news (Hoax) are increasing in Indonesia every year. Kominfo for 24 hours 7 days monitors cyber crime on social media related to hoax information, and almost every day finds disinformation on social media. Tackling the spread of negative content on social media requires digital media literacy skills. However, the Insight Center data survey shows that the digital media literacy of the community is still low, where the national digital literacy index level is still at a score of 3.47 where digital literacy is at the middle level. The survey also shows that the ability to process information, data literacy and critical thinking still has a low score. This journal aims to analyze the digital literacy competence of the community to deal with hoax news content on social media.

Towards Specific of Definition for Concept of a “Digital Competencies”

The article describes the specifics of the concept of digital competencies in the context of the development of an innovative economy. A brief comparison of the concepts of digital literacy, media literacy and digital competencies is carried out, their general and specific features are indicated. The main applications of digital competencies, both economic and socio-cultural, are indicated. An example of a comprehensive program for the development of digital competencies within the European Union is presented, as well as the place androle of the concept of “digital competencies” in programs for long-term socio-economic and educational development of Russia.

A systematic review on fake news research through the lens of news creation and consumption: Research efforts, challenges, and future directions.

BackgroundAlthough fake news creation and consumption are mutually related and can be changed to one another, our review indicates that a significant amount of research has primarily focused on news creation. To mitigate this research gap, we present a comprehensive survey of fake news research, conducted in the fields of computer and social sciences, through the lens of news creation and consumption with internal and external factors.MethodsWe collect 2,277 fake news-related literature searching six primary publishers (ACM, IEEE, arXiv, APA, ELSEVIER, and Wiley) from July to September 2020. These articles are screened according to specific inclusion criteria (see Fig 1). Eligible literature are categorized, and temporal trends of fake news research are examined.ResultsAs a way to acquire more comprehensive understandings of fake news and identify effective countermeasures, our review suggests (1) developing a computational model that considers the characteristics of news consumption environments leveraging insights from social science, (2) understanding the diversity of news consumers through mental models, and (3) increasing consumers’ awareness of the characteristics and impacts of fake news through the support of transparent information access and education.ConclusionWe discuss the importance and direction of supporting one’s “digital media literacy” in various news generation and consumption environments through the convergence of computational and social science research.

Parents’ literacy on mobile advertising aimed at children: a cross - cultural approach

PurposeThe use of mobile devices by children and adolescents is increasing significantly; therefore, it is relevant to research the level of advertising literacy (AL) of parents who act as mediators between children and mobile advertising. This study aims to explore the conceptual, moral and attitudinal dimensions of AL and its relationship with different styles of parental control.Design/methodology/approachA cross-sectional survey was applied simultaneously to a sample of parents with children between 5 and 16 years old in three Spanish-speaking countries: Mexico, Spain and Colombia. Participants from the three countries were recruited via online social media networks and were asked to fill in an online survey. A questionnaire, which has been adapted from previous literature to suit the mobile advertising context and the population of interest, was designed. Cross-country samples of varying sizes, with a predetermined quota of 200 participants for each country, were used. The total sample consisted of 1,454 participants.FindingsFour factors of mobile AL were found, which, to a greater extent, correspond to the dimensions of AL proposed in the literature. The following are the dimensions that were identified: cognitive, moral, attitudinal and an emerging factor is known as “children’s perceived mobile AL.” Differences in parents’ perceived knowledge of mobile advertising, parental control styles and AL levels in the three countries were identified. Parents with an authoritative style were identified to have more knowledge than those with an indulgent style. Differences were also identified between countries concerning the amount of exposure that children have to mobile advertising, while no significant differences were found in the moral dimension.Practical implicationsMarketing practitioners and public policymakers must consider that parents differ in some dimensions of AL. Parents also seem to lack adequate knowledge about the advertising tools available to announcers that affect children and adolescents in a mobile communication environment. Therefore, government agencies should consider developing mobile digital media literacy programs for parents.Originality/valueThis paper explores the dimensions of AL applied to the mobile context and identifies the level of parental mobile AL in three Spanish-speaking countries, as well as the differences between these sub-samples concerning parental mobile AL profiles and parental control styles, thus expanding the literature on AL with a cross-cultural approach.

Overcoming social distancing in interventions with older adults by using digital media?

It was shown that older adults' health literacy has deteriorated in course of the COVID-19 pandemic. Two ongoing interventions aiming to improve health and food literacy as well as self-management by regular in-person meetings with working groups for persons aged 60 and older were put on hold. To help orientating in an information flood, to stay rooted in social networks, and to counteract intervention drop-out, a bridging program was developed. Telephone interviews with peer-moderators on technical equipment for digital communication, media literacy and relevant topics were conducted. The peer-moderators were trained in performing video and phone conferences as well as phone chains. A total number of 23 moderators leading 15 groups with 170 participants were involved in the interventions before the lockdown. It was found that the majority of participants were not able or equipped to perform video or telephone conferences. Based on these findings, health information and exercises were sent periodically by post and each group implemented a phone chain. Both measures were well-accepted by all groups. Conference calls with the moderators were conducted only twice due to low acceptance. Despite training for video conferences, none of the groups managed to use digital media alone for communication. Nevertheless, only four groups, nine moderators and 94 participants, quit the program during the lockdown. The acceptance of the moderators is key to introduce the participants to new communication channels. Due to insufficient digitalized homes, lack of digital devices or technical affinity, the distribution predominantly took place via postal dispatch. Even though the bridging program was well accepted, participants still rather waited until in-person meetings were allowed again instead of swapping to digital communication. A regular, participatory developed, multichannel intervention can help to engage older adults and maintain intervention research in times of crisis.Key messages Multichannel and participatory developed interventions can help group programs with older adults surviving a crisis.Mere digital communication, lacking knowledge and equipment can discourage older adults to stay socially active.

Research on the Integration of Media Literacy Innovative Concept and Entrepreneurship Education and Digital Dynamic Creative Expression Talents.

The rapid development of digital technology has created a variety of forms of digital media. In these emerging media, with the support of high-performance computers, increasingly dynamic performance has become possible, and the public has cultivated a preference for dynamic content cognition. This study, based on the basic characteristics of visual perception to the cognition of motion form, aims to cultivate the cognitive literacy of pan-digital media with innovative concepts and entrepreneurship education and to explore the cognition and innovative expression methods of dynamic language in digital design. The research leads the static oriented morphological exploration and expression to the dynamic expression and thinking of the same concept object. The basic thinking steps for students from “static” to “dynamic” are established, and students are encouraged to use “Synesthesia,” “metaphor” and other methods to carry out a “dynamic expression” level of emotional association. In the experiment, two different ways of design expression, static and dynamic, are required to design and evolve graphics. In this study, 50 freshmen were selected as the training objects for the planning and training of design thinking and performance means. In the visual elaboration and expression of the inner emotion of the same content with innovative concept and entrepreneurship education, not only should the changes and combinations of the graphics be innovated, but the emotional characteristics of the more abstract graphics should be explored as well. The feedback data of students’ thinking and cognition differences in the two stages of expression were obtained through a questionnaire and analyzed and compared. The experimental results show that after the training, students’ ability to develop innovative concepts and entrepreneurship education through dynamic expression, consciousness and perception were significantly improved. This research also provides a new vision and specific implementation method for the future training of digital dynamic innovation expression ability and the cultivation of innovative concepts of digital media literacy and entrepreneurship education.

HOW MOBILE MEDIA ENABLED AND LIMITED ONLINE CIVIC PARTICIPATION AMONG LOW-INCOME U.S. YOUNG PEOPLE DURING THE PANDEMIC

This paper presents comparative research from two youth-centered interdisciplinary ethnographic research projects in media studies, social work, and education. Originally designed as in-person interventions meant to provide digital media literacy and civic leadership development activities for 35 Latinx, Black, Indigenous, Asian American and White young people between ages 15-20 living in low-income neighborhoods, the experience of the COVID-19 pandemic forced both projects to take place online. Whereas each project found some benefits to holding endeavors in an online rather than an in-person environment, this paper centers on similar patterns that emerged across the projects in how and why differing participants dropped out over the one-year period between March 2020 through March 2021. The central research question of this paper is: what are the prospects for and barriers to online civic participation activities in the everyday lives of young people who, along with their families, are experiencing economic precarity and other forms of marginalization? The paper explores how mobile media were put to use for coping with everyday life during the pandemic, revealing some assumptions about both coping and online civic engagement that were dismantled.The analysis of these experiences force a reckoning with structural inequities that existed prior to the pandemic and that were further exacerbated because of it. The paper thus unearths new questions regarding how to design online civic participation activities involving young people with multiply intersecting experiences of both marginalization and resilience.

Dialect Geography of Shallots Agriculture’s Language Variation in Brebes Regency

The purpose of this study was to find out whether there was the significant relationship between digital media literacy and students' perception of hoax. This research uses descriptive correlation methods with surveys as data collection. Respondents in this study were students of diploma, undergraduate, and graduate from 18 study programs at the Faculty of Letters, Universitas Negeri Malang. This study uses surveys conducted online using the Google Form website. The data were then analyzed by using Pearson’s Product Moment Correlation in SPSS software. The results showed that there was a significant relationship between the level of digital media literacy and the perception of hoaxes, and it was in the moderate correlation. Based on the review of related literature, moderate correlation was occur due to several factors such as biased thinking, easily provoked age group, and difficulties in finding accurate media agencies.

Penguatan Moderasi Beragama melalui Forum Persaudaraan Lintas Iman (Forsa) Kabupaten Banyumas pada Masa Pandemi Covid 19

Sebagian kelompok memanfaatkan ketertarikan remaja terhadap pendalaman agama di masa Pandemi Covid-19 untuk mendoktrin paham radikal dan intoleran. Moderasi beragama merupakan konsep ajaran yang memuat nilai-nilai toleransi beragama dan mereduksi maraknya intoleransi dan ekstremisme beragama. Pengabdian masyarakat ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan pemahaman moderasi beragama bagiremaja lintas iman melalui Forum Persaudaraan Lintas Iman (Forsa) Banyumas. Pengabdian masyarakat dilakukan dengan metode edukasi masyarakat melalui metode workshop dan praktik lapangan. Kegiatan pengabdian berlangsung dalam delapan sesi yang secara umum terdiri dari sesi pre-test dan perkenalan, sesi workshop, erta sesi praktik lapangan dan orasi media elektronik. Sesi workshop berisi pemberian materi tentang kebhinekaan, moderasi beragama, kasus-kasus intoleransi di Indonesia, dan cerdas dalam bermedia sosial. Sesi ketujuh berbentuk praktik moderasi dengan membagikan masker dan sembako untuk para pengelola tempat ibadah di Banyumas dan masyarakat kecil terdampak Covid-19. Sesi kedelapan berupa orasi pesan moderasi melalui radio Rama FM. Hasil kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat ini menunjukkan peningkatan pemahaman moderasi beragama peserta dari skala medium menjadi skala tinggi. Praktik lapangan menunjukkan antusiasme peserta dalam merawat kebhinekaan melalui aksi nyata di lingkungan masyarakat yang majemuk. The young generation of the millennial era is a generation that has the challenges of digital modernization, especially in maintaining religious harmony. The rise of the social media context tends to be intolerant, contains hate speech, and hoaxes that can be easily accessed by the younger generation can create a character of intolerance and radicalism in the Pandemic Covid-19 situations. To overcome this problem, the General Soedirman University Community Service team partnered with the Banyumas Interfaith Brotherhood Forum (Forsa) to organize digital media literacy workshops and religious moderation practices in the community. The method used is public education. The form of the activity consisted of eight sessions, namely pre-test, the material on diversity, the material on religious moderation, the material on religious phenomena on social media, training on digital literacy media content analysis, post-test, reflection on restraint through field practice, and moderation oration via on-air radio media. The result of this activity is an increase in participants' understanding and skills in understanding religious diversity and sorting good content on social media.

Hoax Distribution in Social Media After Ratification of Omnibus Law

Social media had both positive and negative impacts. Lately, hoaxes had spread on social media massively after the ratification of the Job Creation Law (Omnibus Law). This research aimed to obtain an overview of hoax distribution on social media that emerged after the ratification of the Job Creation Law, find out the factors that cause it, and solve hoaxes on social media. The research method used was a descriptive qualitative approach. The results showed that hoax contents were circulating on social media after the ratification of the Job Creation Law. This was due to the lack of awareness of the digital media literacy culture and the absence of clarity regarding the draft of the Job Creation bill that was passed. The solution to eradicating hoaxes on social media could be done with three approaches: culture (literacy), technology, and law.

Tunisian High School Students and Digital Media Literacy: A Quantitative Study

Digital media literacy has become an intrinsic component in shaping high school students’ knowledge acquisition and critical thoughts. Over the last two decades, internet and computers have been the implemented tools to reach such goals and promote the students’ learning. This article looks for the impact of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) on Tunisian secondary school students by detecting their technical skills as well as their critical understanding. This quantitative study relies on a self-reporting approach and targets 150 Tunisian secondary students. It proves the necessary consideration of technological and social variables in helping sort out major digital handicaps related to secondary students and displays the interconnectedness between the different dimensions of digital media literacy. It also displays that Tunisian high school students cannot be referred to as digital-media literate people. The study contributes to the field of digital media literacy as it offers a solid empirical background to build on and indicates the necessity of integrating digital media literacy into the school-based initiatives.

Strategy for identification of Hoax News in digital media in facing case of racism of Papua students in Indonesia

The amount of hoax information spread about the case of racism of Papuan students in Surabaya can certainly trigger conflict. Therefore, Papuan students are required to be able to properly analyze information obtained from any source, especially from digital media. This study aims to determine the strategy of Papuan students in identifying hoax news about cases of racism in digital media. This study uses qualitative methods with data collection techniques consisting of observation, in-depth interviews, documentation and focus group discussions. The informants consisted of Papuan students in Jayapura and Jakarta. Data analysis uses data reduction, data display and conclusion/verification.
 The results showed that student literacy about hoaxes consisted of (1) hoaxes were confusing and provocative information, (2) hoaxes were news diversion issues, (3) untrue news and (4) hoaxes sourced from the community and the state. Related to how Papuan students identify hoaxes, they are (a) looking for comparative information on other media, (b) checking and rechecking with friends and family, and (c) checking the clarity of information sources. To be critical of hoax news, students are criticizing hoaxes against images, photos and news that are not appropriate, criticizing foreign media and domestic media that spread hoaxes, and criticizing the government as a hoax spreader.
 The recommendation for this research is that the government makes an electronic-based information system that can be used by the Papuan people as a means to find out the government's efforts in educating and educating the Papuan people in the field of Digital Media Literacy.

Social Capital and Digital Media Literacy Transformation from The Perspective of Social Science in The Era of Covid-19 Pandemic

The phenomenon of the Covid-19 Pandemic is a worldwide viral phenomenon, all countries in the world feel its impact. New phenomena and habits are born that affect all aspects of human life. The sociocultural and economic factors have given birth to a new order that is more obvious, Garut is included in the yellow line status category because there is an increase in Covid 19 cases every day so that it becomes a standby district in West Java despite the implementation of New Normal Adaptation This study examines how the transformation of social capital and digital literacy in learning in the era of covid 19 and the influence of learning in the era of covid 19 on the transformation of social capital and digital media literacy carried out on high school students in Garut Regency as many as 207 students who successfully captured information in the future. Covid 19 pandemic. The results of the study show that the social/physical distancing policy that has been put in place has become a new order in the lives of people and students in Garut district, the habit of crowding is lost for a moment and replaced by the habit of staying at home and keeping a distance. As a result, the learning that is carried out is forced by utilizing the media owned by schools and students, on average students use their social media to access assignments and learning materials such as Whatsapp, Facebook and school Instagram. While there are still a few who use class application media such as Google Classroom, Microsoft Team, Zoom for reasons of limited credit quota. But in general, there has been a paradigm shift in the use of digital media in the learning process in the Covid 19 Era. There is a significant influence with very high criteria that learning in the Covid 19 Era positively affects the transformation of Social Capital and Digital Media Literacy among High School Students in Garut Regency. Based on this, this research confirms that there is a positive impact related to learning conditions in the Covid Era with the transformation of social capital and digital media literacy. Literasi Media Digital Pada Anak-Anak Majelis Talim Hidayatul Mubtadiin

Digital media literacy is “the ability to access, analyze, evaluate and communicate content from media messages. Digital media literacy also means the ability to understand, analyze, and deconstruct media imagery. The ability to do this is aimed at making viewers as consumers of mass media - including children become aware or literate about the way media is constructed / made and accessed. In short, this literacy is often called "media literacy". These community service partners are children of the recitation of the Hidayatul Mubtadiin Talim Council, located in Ciledug District, Peninggilan Utara Village, Tangerang City. The Talim Council has members consisting mostly of children from 7 years to 17 years of age. This partner has several problems including: First, many children of the talim council have received and consumed hoax news from the Whatsapp group and also social media. Second, the children of the talim assembly are less able to maintain their own privacy on social media, where there was once a case of children running away from their homes because they were friends with people they knew through their social media. The solution in this community service is by providing training on digital media literacy which can be achieved through things such as: a. how to filter good information from social media, b. how to process good information from social media, c. How to safeguard and protect personal data in a digital environment.
