THE INFLUENCE OF DIGITAL COMICS ON STUDENTS’ LEARNING OUTCOMES

This study aims to determine whether or not there is an influence of digital comics on the science learning outcomes of fifth grade elementary school students on single substance and mixed substance material. The research method used was quantitative with true experimental and was designed using a Pretest-Posttest Control Group Design research design. The sample size for the research was 58 students who were divided into 2 groups, namely class V.A, which had 29 students as the experimental class and class V.B, which had 29 students as the control class. levence statistics, hypothesis testing using the t-test stated that both classes showed an rcount7.588 >ttable 1.672and the sig (2-tailed) value shows 0.000 < 0,05of So it can be concluded that Ha is accepted. Based on this research data, it can be proven that there is an influence of digital comics on the science learning outcomes of fifth grade elementary school students in single substance and mixed substance materials.

ABSTRACT This contribution examines game-like digital comics, departing from Daniel Merlin Goodbrey’s concept of “game comics” that he discusses in his doctoral dissertation and in following articles (2017, 2020). Game comics, as the name suggests, would be interactive, playful comics, closely related to video games. In Goodbrey’s words, they are “a type of hypercomic that presents some of the key features of a game and uses some of the key features of the comic form as the basis for its gameplay” (2020, p. 45, "Game comics: Theory and design"). Firstly, the article defines comics, establishing a new taxonomy of digital comics (distinguishing between “homothetic,” “linked,” and “expanded”) and positioning game comics as belonging to digital ones, yet as much more fluid objects than Goodbrey’s. Secondly, it reframes the concept of interactivity within a novel framework, envisioning four types of user agency (narrative, interpretive, material, and social) that a semiotic text encourages or hinders. Lastly, it discusses a selection of game comics and reconsiders the relation the concept bears to that ofcomic games (Backe, 2020, "Game-comics and comic-games") – video games remediating comics’ affordances, seen as game comics’ hypothetical reverse. In interrogating the specifics of these objects and reflecting on the different types of user agency they prompt, the article concludes that the space between comics and games is fuzzier than taxonomies considering media in isolation would suggest.

Digital Comic Media Development to Overcome Students’ Difficulty in Learning Figurative Language Grade V Elementary School

Figurative language as one of the materials in Indonesian language learning, is very important to learn. However, there are still many students who have difficulty understanding the material. Difficulty understanding the material will result in difficulty understanding the meaning of words. This study aims to develop digital comic media on figurative language material for grade V elementary school students. This type of research is development research with the ADDIE development model. The data collection techniques used in this research are observation, interviews, documentation, questionnaires, and tests. The data analysis techniques used were the normality test, t-test, and <em>N-Gain</em> test. The results of the assessment of the feasibility of digital comics from material experts obtained a score of 89.87%. While the assessment of media experts obtained a value of 88.05%. In addition, responses from users on small-scale product trials obtained a percentage of 98.33% from students and 100% from homeroom teacher. Meanwhile, during the large-scale product trial, a percentage of 98.18% was obtained from students and 100% from homeroom teacher. The effectiveness of digital comics on figurative language material is evidenced in the t-test, with the results in the small-scale product trial a value of 𝑡 of 11.366 > with a value of 2.571. While in the large-scale product trial obtained amounting to 16.115 > with a value of 2.080. In the <em>N-Gain</em> test, the small-scale product trial obtained an <em>N-Gain</em> of 0.77 and the large-scale product trial obtained an <em>N-Gain</em> of 0.74.

This study aims to determine the validity and effectiveness of the mathematical comic learning medium (KOMKA) to improve the numeration ability of elementary school students especially on area & volume measurement materials. This type of research is Research and Development. The development model used is the ADDIE model developed by Dick and Carey, which has five stages: Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluate. The population in this development research is all students of SDN 2 Padarek in the 2023/2024 academic year. The sampling technique used in this development research is simple random sampling. The data analysis technique used in this study is a descriptive analysis technique to describe whether the digital comics developed by the study are valid and effective for use in class learning. Research results show that the KOMKA learning medium is valid for use in learning activities, derived from the validity results of media experts and material experts. The KOMKA learning medium is effective in improving students' numeration skills. This can be seen from the average test results of students' mathematical understanding ability after the application of the KOMKA learning medium was higher than before.

Koditako Media (Digital Comics of Economic Activities) in IPAS for Fourth-Grade Students

The use of learning media that is less varied and exciting results in students being less interested in learning, resulting in low student learning outcomes. This research aims to analyze the development, feasibility and effectiveness of Koditako media in improving student learning outcomes in the economic activities material in the science and science subject. This research is Research and Development (RnD), which refers to the ADDIE model. The subjects of this research consisted of material experts, material experts, language experts, class IV teachers and class IV students totalling 19 students. Data was collected by conducting observations, interviews, questionnaires and tests. Data analysis uses qualitative and quantitative descriptive analysis. The results of expert validation tests and teacher and student responses obtained very appropriate criteria. The T-test indicated a significant difference between the pretest and post-test average scores. The N-Gain test with moderate criteria shows increased student learning outcomes after using Koditako media. It was concluded that Koditako media is feasible and effective in improving learning outcomes for "IPAS" material on economic activities. The implication of this research is to make it easier for students to understand science learning material about economic activities so that student learning outcomes can improve.

EXPRESS: Wait for Free: A Consumption-Decelerating Promotion for Serialized Digital Media

Promotions for digital goods have typically focused on enticing users to hasten their consumption. Here, we investigate a novel deceleration-incentivizing promotional policy, “Wait For Free” (WFF), applied to serialized digital content – sequences of interconnected episodes – monetized via episode-level paywalls. Specifically, customers can sample early episodes of promoted series for free, and can continue to do so by waiting a pre-specified time; or for those unwilling to wait, by paying. WFF can draw users to start viewing a promoted series, and generate revenue through two sources: impatient users opting to pay to consume the next episode immediately; and additional users continuing through to paid-only episodes at the end. We analyze large-scale viewership data from a platform that enacted WFF for digital comics. A comic-level Difference-in-Differences (DiD) analysis provides robust evidence that WFF boosts paid viewership for the promoted series, and the degree of lift varies by user type and over time. A more granular episode-level analysis incorporating inter-comic spillovers and promotional lift heterogeneity suggests that WFF can boost net-of-cannibalization revenue at the platform level: specifically, the model-optimized set of promoted comics performs roughly 18% better than the firm-enacted one and 25% better than the no-promotion baseline; furthermore, WFF and paid-only episodes each receive nontrivial degrees of lift, 70% and 59% respectively.

The effect of digital comic based on social values on motivation and learning outcomes of class X MA AL Islam Telaga Biru (evaluating proposals, offers, and agreement in negotiation text)

This study aims to analyze the impact of social value-based digital comics as a learning medium on grade X students' motivation and learning outcomes, focusing on MA Al Islam Telaga Biru students' ability to evaluate proposals, offers, and agreements in negotiation texts. This research employs quantitative methodology. The data for this study were collected from primary sources through the use of questionnaires and tests. The data analysis technique employed is the paired samples t-test. The findings of this study indicate that prior to the use of social value-based digital comic media, the level of learning motivation was 71.83%, which falls within the "good enough" category. Conversely, the level of learning outcomes that met the minimum completeness criteria was only 11.1%. (2) The learning motivation score after the use of social value-based digital comic media was 81.92%, indicating a positive shift from the previous score of 71.83%, which fell within the "good enough" range. Subsequently, the proportion of students who met the KKM for learning outcomes increased from 11.10% to 96.30% following the use of social value-based digital comic media. (3) The use of digital comic media based on social values has a significant effect on learning motivation and student learning outcomes in evaluating proposals, offers, and agreements in negotiation texts in Class X Madrasah Aliyah (MA) Al Islam Telaga Biru. This demonstrates that digital comic media is capable of stimulating students' enthusiasm for learning, which in turn enables students to comprehend the concepts and context of the lesson, thus allowing them to achieve the highest possible score in evaluating proposals, offers, and agreements in negotiation texts.

Pengembangan Media Komik Digital Berbahasa Jerman Cerita Rakyat Batak Toba Raja Si Opat Ama dengan Bantuan Aplikasi Next G-Toon

This research aims to develop German-language digital comic media that elevates the Toba Batak folklore "Si Raja Opat Ama" using the Next G-Toon application. The research method used a quantitative descriptive approach, including data collection through an online survey to assess the level of reader satisfaction with digital comics and data collection related to Toba Batak folklore from various sources. The results showed high interest from readers in digital comics, with the majority positively assessing quality, safety, ease of use, and providing recommendations for this digital comic. Visualization of the story through images and German text facilitates understanding of context and sentence structure. In conclusion, the German-language digital comic about Toba Batak folklore proved to be interesting and effective in helping learn German and understand local culture. It is recommended to develop further digital comics that raise folklore or other local cultures as an effort to preserve cultural heritage and promote Indonesia's cultural wealth

The Impact of Using Digital Comic as A Media for Learning Short Stories

The aim of this research is to describe the impact of using digital comic as a learning media of Indonesian language subjects for junior high school students. The research method used qualitative method with a case study approach. Data collection uses questionnaires at the beginning of the research process, observations, and interviews with the aim of obtaining information on students' experiences regarding digital-based learning media. The primary data used is an overview of the use of webtoon applications in learning activities and secondary data in the form of literature studies originating from books, articles, proceedings, theses, and other media that are able to support the availability of information related to related topics. The data that has been collected is analyzed according to the discussion of related topics using data reduction, data display, and conclusion methods. The results of the research show that the majority of grade 7th of junior high school students prefer digital comics compared to using text in conveying short story material. Webtoon-based digital comics are considered more effective and interesting compared to text only. The majority of students understand the story presented using the webtoon application and can answer questions related to the story correctly.

Digital Comics: Integrating CALL in Enhancing Students' Reading Skill at the High School Level

Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL) is a learning method that uses computer technology in the language learning process. This includes the use of software, applications, and other digital resources to assist students in learning English. Digital comics are a form of comic presented in digital format, which can be accessed and read via electronic devices such as computers, tablets or smartphones. This research aims to assess the effectiveness of learning CALL with digital comics in improving English reading skills. This research involves a pre-test and post-test comparison between experimental and control groups using narrative text material. There were 60 students from class XI. A and XI. C SMA 2 Muhammadiyah Bandar Lampung in the academic year 2023/2024. The results showed a significant increase in the scores of the experimental group post-intervention, especially in the higher score range (84-100). The findings show that the CALL method with digital comics is an effective tool to improve English reading skill among high school students.

The potential of the dynamic platform webtoons.com/fr in the teaching/learning of French as perceived by students of Romance philology

Reading is an important element of independent work on the language, but offering students additional reading to improve their linguistic and cultural competences is an extremely difficult task, due to the evolving tastes of young people and the variability of the media they use. Given the popularity of manga and digital comics in France, Romance philology students were asked to read a series selected from the webtoons.com/fr platform in French. A survey was then carried out to find out their views on how this tool could be used in French language learning. The results of the survey clearly indicate that the webtoons.com/fr platform can be used as an effective tool for learning French. According to the respondents, reading the selected series allowed them, above all, to develop lexical resources and was also an enjoyable pastime that increased motivation to learn the language. Students also paid attention to the combination of word and image, appreciating both the aesthetic and practical side of reading digital comics. Finally, the practicality of using the platform, its ease of use and accessibility was emphasised.

Development of Students' Social Skills in Indonesia

Criticism of the school's disregard for the universal value of the knowledge it imparts and of its ability to guarantee the possibility of social mobility. This research aims to improve the development of students' social skills in Indonesia through digital comics. The research used was the 4D Research and Development Model from Thiaharajan and Semmel, namely Define, Design, Develop, Disseminate, which was carried out at SMA N 1 Padang Tualang with a total of 34 students. Data collection techniques use Observation, Questionnaires and Tests. Learning outcomes with data analysis techniques using Gain Score improve students' social skills. This research produces a product in the form of a digital comic that is suitable for use by fulfilling the Valid requirements as seen from the content suitability percentage of 83% in the very good category, presentation expert 61% in the good category, linguist expert 93% in the very good category.

Development of Canva Based Digital Comics on Straight Motion Kinematics Materials For Student’s Learning Motivation Orientation

This study aims to determine the development of digital comics learning media on the material of straight motion kinematics by students at 3 SMAN Bengkulu City. This research is R&D research using the ADDIE model. The instrument used in this study was an expert validation sheet consisting of 5 aspects, namely content, presentation, language, media, and learning motivation. Based on the results of the research that has been done, it is known that the quality of the development of digital comics learning media on straight motion kinematics material is categorized as very suitable for use, with all aspects found to be 87.08% and the results of students' perceptions of the development of digital comics learning media are obtained based on all aspects of 86.99% with very good category in 3 SMAN Bengkulu City. So, it can be said that developing digital comic learning media on straight-motion kinematics material to direct students' learning motivation is very feasible and very good to develop.

Elevating Arabic Speaking Skills: Plotagon and Digital Comics as Catalysts for Enhanced Learning Engagement and Proficiency

Active student participation and engagement in diverse practice exercises are essential for mastering all four language skills. Due to the lack of active participation, students' proficiency in Arabic language learning, particularly in speaking skills (maharah kalam), falls below the required educational benchmarks. This research uses a quasi-experimental approach to assess the effectiveness of two different learning media: Plotagon for Tenth-grade students of IPS 1 and digital comics for Tenth-grade students of IPS 2 in improving Arabic speaking skills. The research findings indicate that students who used Plotagon as a learning tool to enhance their speaking skills achieved significantly better learning outcomes on average compared to students who used digital comics for the same purpose. Additionally, this study found that students who utilized Plotagon for learning exhibited higher engagement levels than those who used digital comics. These findings highlight the significance of active engagement in learning Arabic and indicate that Plotagon animation can be a valuable tool for enhancing learning outcomes and student engagement.

Enhancing elementary learning with Webtoon-based digital comics

One innovative learned media development that could improve student learned outcomes was digital comics. Digital comics was an innovation from printed comics that accessed used the Internet network and are more efficient. This research aimed to develop and tested the feasibility of Webtoon-based digital comic media for applying Pancasila valued. Aparted from that, to found out the effectiveness of media in improved the learned outcomes of class V students during the learning process. This researched used research and development with the waterfall model according to Somerville, which had five stages. The use of the waterfall model in this research is limited to 4 stages: 1) requirements analysis; 2) design; 3) implementation; and 4) testing. The sample in this studied was 6 class V students in small class trial subjects and 23 class V students in significant class trial subjects. Data collection techniques used interviews, validation sheets, and tests. The instruments used were interview sheets, needed questionnaires, validation sheets, response questionnaires, and pretest post-test questioned (20 cognitive questions). The validation results of material and media experts showed that the media is "Very suitable" for the learning process. Teachers and students stated that the media was "Efficient" to use in the learning process. A significant difference existed between student learning outcomes before and after using Webtoon-based digital comic media (T (22) = 9.20, p < 0.05. These findings could have used to expand media distribution to a broader scale.

Analisis Elemen Visual Pada Komik “Pupus Putus Sekolah”

Digital comics are currently gaining popularity among many people, especially teenagers. Not only serving as a form of entertainment, they can also be utilized as a means of conveying information. The objective of this research is to understand the use of visual elements in conveying messages and information through the comic "Pupus Putus Sekolah." This study employs a descriptive method, illustrating specific situations and describing facts and their relevance to the researched visual elements applied in the comic "Pupus Putus Sekolah" in a factual, detailed, sequential, and precise manner. The research relies on illustrative data, and the data collection technique involves observation or scrutiny of the visual elements used. The researcher utilizes the method of observation, listening, and reading the entire season and episodes of the comic "Pupus Putus Sekolah," noting essential information for data collection. Meanwhile, the analysis involves classifying the collected data into its types, analyzing and interpreting the data, presenting the analyzed data, and drawing conclusions. Based on the conducted analysis, the findings reveal that visual elements such as panels, perspectives, gutters, speech balloons, sound effects, illustrations, story, splash, motion lines, symbolism, and storytelling play a crucial role in influencing how the comic's narrative content is conveyed.

Inclusive Education through Digital Comic Creation in Higher Learning Environments

This research aims to promote diversity and inclusion among higher education students by examining the integration of technology into project-based learning (PBL) for English as a foreign language (EFL) teacher candidates. Based on a mixed-methods approach and convenience sampling (n = 84 participants), this study involved pre-service teachers who collaboratively employed several authoring tools to create 16 digital comic strips for teaching English. The focus of the project was on inclusivity, cultural diversity, and affective education. This study consisted of five stages corresponding to different critical thinking skills: comprehension, negotiation, creation, presentation, and evaluation. The instruments used for quantitative data included a pre/post-survey based on two validated scales. Qualitative data were gathered through class discussions and semi-structured interviews. The results, analyzed through SPSS and QDA Miner Lite, revealed that teacher candidates lacked prior experience using digital tools to create EFL-inclusive materials. However, the study also highlighted increased awareness of inclusive education and strong advocacy for the integration of transformative technology in teacher training programs.
