AI-Driven Smart Homes: Challenges and Opportunities

As AI-based smart homes become increasingly popular, there is a need to better understand the benefits and challenges of this emerging technology. A survey on AI-based smart homes can provide valuable insights into user needs, adoption rates, user satisfaction, barriers to adoption, and opportunities for innovation. This research overviews the cutting-edge literature on smart home development with an emphasis on the utilization of artificial intelligence (AI) approaches in this application area. We begin with a review of AI technologies and the smart home necessities needed to implement AI. Then, we introduce several applications of AI for smart homes and describe the most popular approaches already present in literary works. The open Issues (e.g., security and privacy, data collection and sharing, data analytics, and latency) meeting the development of smart homes are also discussed in this work. Finally, the paper suggests some directions for future study that could be fruitful.

Research on Intelligent Home and Security Risk Warning System

With the gradual development and popularity of smart home, the importance of the warning function of security risks gradually emerges. Aiming at reducing the personal and property losses of residents caused by security hazards, this paper analyses the causes and warning methods of various safety hazards such as fire, harmful gas leakage and so on, and provides a way of thinking for building a perfect intelligent home system and house danger warning system by choosing various sensor types such as IRS infrared sensor and Fiber Bragg Grating Sensor, the appropriate installation schemes can be developed in order to coordinate the alarm system and alarm the occurrence of danger in time.

The continuous development of human civilization and the continuous progress of science and technology have played a decisive role in the evolution of the human living environment, and the continuous improvement of the human living environment and the increasing development of human production technology have jointly promoted the emergence and development of "smart home". The popularization and application of smart homes in interior design is imperative. From the perspective of interior design under the background of the "Internet +" era, this article first defines the meaning and types of smart homes, analyzes the reasons for the rapid development of smart homes, and then analyzes the relationship between smart homes and interior design, and reveals the problem of applying smart home in interior design, and finally provides suggestions for the integration of smart home and interior design from the perspective of human settlement environment design.

Alexa application for lighting and temperature management through fuzzy controllers that can be used in a home automation environment

Today, the design and development of smart homes and the way in which the user interacts with them is becoming more and more common. There are different ways in which a user can interact with these technological elements, such as wireless communications, control from a mobile device and through voice, the latter of great relevance for this paper. The design of such buildings seeks the comfort of the individual or individuals who inhabit it, modifying the internal conditions of the property, such as interior and exterior lighting, humidity, etc. This environment control occurs due to the reading of values recorded by sensors, and the output reaction of the actuators. This paper presents the proposal for a control system of light and temperature conditions within a building through Alexa. The conditioning of such physical magnitudes is carried out by means of fuzzy controllers. The presented scheme could be easily used in an automation system.

Smart Home Energy Monitoring and Energy Reduction Technique

The concept of Home Energy Management System (HEMS) is emerged from the development of smart homes, which connect humans and things to automate the manual operations. The smart homes users enjoy secured, pleasant, and autonomously managed lifestyle. Additionally, smart homes have the potential to generate revenue by vending clean and sustainable energy to the grid, thereby saving both energy and money. The proposed method efficiently reschedules and arranges the power flow among grid electricity, storage devices, and photovoltaic models to manage the energy requirements of smart home. Energy-management systems is highly preferred to economic benefits of smart homes while maintaining a comfortable living, maximizing connectivity and developing optimized operation of loads. The proposed system is finally implemented in a simulation environment, and further the obtained outcomes demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed method in terms of energy management from various sources.

Smart Homes Supporting the Wellness of One or Two-Person Households.

The reduction in face-to-face contact and the increase in time spent at home during the ongoing coronavirus disease pandemic have resulted in increasing interest and demand for smart homes. Further, the rapid increase in the number of one-person and two-person households in Korea recently has led to these becoming representative household types. This study identifies the wellness characteristics of such households and proposes a direction for smart home development to help them lead healthy, happy lives. It focuses on mapping residents’ perceptions and experiences to scenarios and on identifying the functions required in smart homes and the technologies needed to provide these functions. It uses data from a survey to investigate and analyze the wellness characteristics of one- and two-person households in five dimensions and develops five scenarios of representative household types. By analyzing the developed scenarios, this study proposes smart homes that support the wellness of such households in six categories: exercise/sports, hobby/entertainment, social communications, occupation/work, self-development/education, and energy conservation. These households are exposed to digital environments from an early age and are familiar with the internet and technologies. Therefore, they are likely to adopt innovative technologies in housing. Thus, the smart home development proposed in this study is a promising strategic approach to housing planning.

Interior Design of Smart Home Based on Intelligent 3D Virtual Technology

With the development of society and the continuous advancement of technology, people's research on smart home products is gradually deepening. Compared with the past, smart homes are no longer out of reach, but actually penetrate into our lives. However, while continuously exploring the technology of smart home products, designers have not conducted in-depth research on the interactive mode of the control interface of smart home products. Based on this, the purpose of this article is to study the smart home interior design based on intelligent three-dimensional virtual technology. This article first analyzes the development and current situation of smart homes, and on this basis, combines three-dimensional virtual reality technology to research and analyze smart home systems (S H S). This article systematically elaborates the design of functional modules of the S H S based on intelligent 3D virtual reality technology and the method of converting 2D plane to 3D space coordinate. And use comparative analysis method, interview method and other research methods to carry out experimental research on the theme of this article. The research shows that compared with the traditional S H S, the S H S based on 3D virtual technology studied in this paper has higher feasibility.

Application of Machine To Machine Communication for Smart Homes

The application of machine-to machine or M2M communication has increased in the modern era and this helps in the development of smart homes. This involves streamlining communication between human and machine that typically monitor the confidential objects within homes. Technology should be advanced with the implementation of network connection. The home networking system should be connected with a LAN network that helps in M2M communication. Wired and wireless connectivity are major categories in M2M communication. In this concern, wireless connection is formed in advantageous conditions that can be used in the home appliance and make a direct connection with the phone to get easy information. The information is received with a messaging system through internet connection that is mainly vital with usage of COAP and SIP protocol that potentially impact on communication. This type of communication in smart homes provides protection from fraudulent activity as this required sensor. MotorBeat

More and more home appliances are now connected to the Internet, thus enabling various smart home applications. However, a critical problem that may impede the further development of smart home is overlooked: Small appliances account for the majority of home appliances, but they receive little attention and most of them are cut off from the Internet. To fill this gap, we propose MotorBeat, an acoustic communication approach that connects small appliances to a smart speaker. Our key idea is to exploit direct current (DC) motors, which are common components of small appliances, to transmit acoustic messages. We design a novel scheme named Variable Pulse Width Modulation (V-PWM) to drive DC motors. MotorBeat achieves the following 3C goals: (1) Comfortable to hear, (2) Compatible with multiple motor modes, and (3) Concurrent transmission. We implement MotorBeat with commercial devices and evaluate its performance on three small appliances and ten DC motors. The results show that the communication range can be up to 10 m.

Blockchain-Based Robust Data Security Scheme in IoT-Enabled Smart Home

The recent surge in development of smart homes and smart cities can be observed in many developed countries. While the idea to control devices that are in home (embedded with the Internet of Things (IoT) smart devices) by the user who is outside the home might sound fancy, but it comes with a lot of potential threats. There can be many attackers who will be trying to take advantage of this. So, there is a need for designing a secure scheme which will be able to distinguish among genuine/authorized users of the system and attackers. And knowing about the details of when and what IoT devices are used by the user, the attacker can trace the daily activities of user and can plan an attack accordingly. Thus, the designed security scheme should guarantee confidentiality, anonymity and un-traceability. Most of the schemes proposed in the literature are either non-blockchain based which involves inherent problems of storing data in a single-server or assuming weaker attack models. In this work, we propose a novel scheme based on blockchain technology, assuming a stronger Canetti and Krawczyk (CK)-threat model. Through the formal and informal security, and comparative analysis, we show that the proposed scheme provides a superior security and more functionality features, with less communication cost and comparable computational cost as compared to other competent schemes. Moreover, the blockchain based simulation study on the proposed scheme has been conducted to show its feasibility in real-life application.

Wireless Sensor Network in IoT and Performance Optimization

This paper gives an overview of WSN and IoT, related work, different ways of connecting WSN with internet, development of smart home, challenges for WSN etc. Next a Framework for performance optimization in IoT is given and QC-PC-MCSC heuristic is analyzed in terms of Energy Efficiency and Life Time of a sensor on Energy Latency Density Design Space, a topology management application that is power efficient. QC-PC-MCSC and QC-MCSC are compared for Energy Efficiency and Life Time of a sensor over energy latency density design space, a topology management application.

A qualitative assessment of the impact of smart homes and environmentally beneficial technologies on the UK 2050 net-zero carbon emission target

PurposeThere are 29 million homes in the UK, accounting for 14% of the UK's energy consumption. This is given that UK has one of the highest water and energy demands in Europe which needs to be addressed according to the Committee on Climate Change (CCC). Smart homes technology holds a current perception that it is principally used by “tech-savvy” users with larger budgets. However, smart home technology can be used to control water, heat and energy in the entire house. This paper investigates how smart home technology could be effectively utilised to aid the UK government in meeting climate change targets and to mitigate the environmental impact of a home in use towards reducing carbon emissions.Design/methodology/approachBoth primary and secondary data were sought to gain insight into the research problem. An epistemological approach to this research is to use interpretivism to analyse data gathered via a semi-structured survey. Two groups of participants were approached: (1) professionals who are deemed knowledgeable about smart home development and implementation and (2) users of smart home technology. A variety of open-ended questions were formulated, allowing participants to elaborate by exploring issues and providing detailed qualitative responses based on their experience in this area which were interpreted quantitatively for clearer analysis.FindingsWith fossil fuel reserves depleting, there is an urgency for renewable, low carbon energy sources to reduce the 5 tonnes annual carbon emissions from a UK household. This requires a multi-faceted and a multimethod approach, relying on the involvement of both the general public and the government in order to be effective. By advancing energy grids to make them more efficient and reliable, concomitant necessitates a drastic change in the way of life and philosophy of homeowners when contemplating a reduction of carbon emissions. If both parties are able to do so, the UK is more likely to reach its 2050 net-zero carbon goal. The presence of a smart meter within the household is equally pivotal. It has a positive effect of reducing the amount of carbon emissions and hence more need to be installed.Research limitations/implicationsFurther research is needed using a larger study sample to achieve more accurate and acceptable generalisations about any future course of action. Further investigation on the specifics of smart technology within the UK household is also needed to reduce the energy consumption in order to meet net-zero carbon 2050 targets due to failures of legislation.Practical implicationsFor smart homes manufacturers and suppliers, more emphasis should be placed to enhance compatibility and interoperability of appliances and devices using different platform and creating more user's friendly manuals supported by step-by-step visual to support homeowners in the light of the wealth of knowledge base generated over the past few years. For homeowners, more emphasis should be placed on creating online knowledge management platform easily accessible which provide virtual support and technical advice to home owners to deal with any operational and technical issues or IT glitches. Developing technical design online platform for built environment professionals on incorporating smart sensors and environmentally beneficial technology during early design and construction stages towards achieving low to zero carbon homes.Originality/valueThis paper bridges a significant gap in the body of knowledge in term of its scope, theoretical validity and practical applicability, highlighting the impact of using smart home technology on the environment. It provides an insight into how the UK government could utilise smart home technology in order to reduce its carbon emission by identifying the potential link between using smart home technology and environmental sustainability in tackling and mitigating climate change. The findings can be applied to other building types and has the potential to employ aspects of smart home technology in order to manage energy and water usage including but not limited to healthcare, commercial and industrial buildings.

Can Prosuming Become Perilous? Exploring Systems of Control and Domestic Abuse in the Smart Homes of the Future

In what ways can new, emerging digital technologies and energy business models such as “prosuming” become intertwined with troubling patterns of domestic abuse and violence? Domestic violence entails controlling, coercive or threatening behaviours, to gain or maintain power and control between intimate partners or family members regardless of gender or sexuality. The rapid development of digital communication services, smart homes, and digitalization processes such as prosuming create surprising threats related to technology-facilitated abuse. In this empirical study, based on a nationally representative survey of householders (n= 1,032 respondents) and three focus groups with the general public in different locations around the UK (n= 18 respondents), we explore the extent that prosuming technologies, smart grids and smart systems could act as potential enablers of domestic violence or systems of control. We also explore the use of smart systems as possible deterrents and mechanisms to reduce and address domestic violence and provide victim protection and recovery. In doing so, we explore user perceptions and preferences of smart systems, in relation to trust, monitoring, tracking, and surveillance. We finally discuss our results through the themes of duality and policy and provide conclusions with recommendations for further research.

Purpose: With the spread of the 4th industrial revolution technology, the change of the housing paradigm is accelerating, and the development of technology is required according to the related to the smart home. Although many studies on smart homes have been conducted in Korea, there are insufficient cases of systematically analyzing and reviewing these studies.The purpose of this study is to investigate the domestic research cases of smart home in detail and to analyze the research trends by major keywords using a systematic table of these research cases. In this process, leading keywords related to government policies, market trend can be extracted and the flow of major research related to smart homes that have been conducted since the early 2000s is reviewed. Method: This study examines a number of previous studies in Korea. In particular, changes in similar keywords related to ‘smart home’ and the trend of smart home development are analyzed according to the development of related technology. To this end, the results of 556 studies conducted in the DBPIA search engine are collected and the research contents are analyzed. Result: The analysis can be summarized as follows. (1) Research on smart home can be clustered into four categories (construction, communication, home appliance, service). Based on these major items, detailed elements are classified and keywords for research and technology development are suggested. (2) The smart home-related construction field can be divided into four sub-elements (planning, equipment, energy, law) in detail, and research trends of related papers are introduced using a systematic table.

This research mainly discusses the application of artificial intelligence technology in home robots in the design of smart products. In order to let users know more quickly and more clearly where security problems or hidden dangers have occurred, the emojis are designed together with related icons. While generating the voice, the system also calls the method in animation to switch the specified screen. Before that, the specified time value will be set for the refresh frequency, so that the screen is clear and visible, and conforms to the normal facial movement habits. In addition, during speech synthesis and broadcasting, Android’s Toast method is called to show the progress of synthesis information and the progress of broadcasting, which fully reflects the intelligence and interactivity of the system. During the functional test, the normal average continuous use time of the face recognition alarm system was 45 minutes, and the correct rate of face recognition on the computer screen reached about 81.2%. This research contributes to the further development of smart homes.

This technology mainly adjusts and controls the home by sensing the surrounding environment and independently designing a system. Through computer technology, we have collected information such as the operation status of home equipment and power usage, and analyzed and processed the collected data and information. After that, we realized the development of mobile apps through WebApp technology. Consumers can check on their mobile phones. Controlling the home makes life more convenient and efficient. This article systematically explains the principle and function of this technology.

Development Status of Smart Home System in the Era of Internet of Everything

Driven by the Internet of things technology, the development of smart home is showing a rapid and vigorous development trend. This paper mainly studies the development status of smart home system in the era of Internet of things. After a long time of operation, the system should check the power supply voltage, check whether the LCD display is normal, whether the wireless module can transmit the signal, and whether the signal collected by the sensor is normal. We check all kinds of interfaces and the circuit works normally. After running for a long time, the program checks the working condition of the chip and checks the working state of the chip. The accuracy test environment of this system is the test of air conditioner, TV and socket in the laboratory. Each command word is tested 50 times, and the number of successful experiments is recorded. The data shows that the average transmission time is about 10 ms, and 99.9% of the data transmission delay is less than 30 ms. The results show that the hardware circuit meets the requirements of low-power design, and the embedded software can reduce the system power consumption and achieve business functions through sleep wake-up mechanism.

DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION OF A SMART HOME GAS DETECTION BASED ON MOBILE NETWORK SYSTEM

The rapid development of smart home and deep learning attract many types of research to meet the needs of the homeowner that make the right decisions based on preset settings or based on user behavior in the smart home. And because some gases cause air pollution, affect human health, cause lung cancer, breathing problems. and cause a fire as well. Many gases in our home can pose many dangers. One of the risks of using LPG is leakage in cylinders, gas installations, stoves, or LPG heaters. This paper focused on using technological development to alert about a gas leak inside the home to preserve the general health of people. The proposed system, a gas sensor is used to measure the value of gas in the atmosphere. This part is an important part of the smart home, which is taking precautionary measures by using the gas sensor and controller, in addition to using a mobile network system to send an alert message to the user about gas leakage from the mentioned sources. The proposed system is characterized by its low cost and allows the homeowner to monitor the gas leak inside the home from outside.

Retracted] SAP: An IoT Application Module Placement Strategy Based on Simulated Annealing Algorithm in Edge‐Cloud Computing

The Internet of Things (IoT) is rapidly growing and provides the foundation for the development of smart cities, smart home, and health care. With more and more devices connecting to the Internet, huge amounts of data are produced, creating a great challenge for data processing. Traditional cloud computing has the problems of long delays. Edge computing is an extension of cloud computing, processing data at the edge of the network can reduce the long processing delay of cloud computing. Due to the limited computing resources of edge servers, resource management of edge servers has become a critical research problem. However, the structural characteristics of the subtask chain between each pair of sensors and actuators are not considered to address the task scheduling problem in most existing research. To reduce processing latency and energy consumption of the edge‐cloud system, we propose a multilayer edge computing system. The application deployed in the system is based on directed digraph. To fully use the edge servers, we proposed an application module placement strategy using Simulated Annealing module Placement (SAP) algorithm. The modules in an application are bounded to each sensor. The SAP algorithm is designed to find a module placement scheme for each sensor and to generate a module chain including the mapping of the module and servers for each sensor. Thus, the edge servers can transmit the tuples in the network with the module chain. To evaluate the efficacy of our algorithm, we simulate the strategy in iFogSim. Results show the scheme is able to achieve significant reductions in latency and energy consumption.
