<h3>The Determination of Sex</h3> Prof. F. Unterberger, director, gynecologic department, Krankenhaus der Barmherzigkeit in Königsberg, has in the<i>Deutsche medizinische Wochenschrift</i>an article on the arbitrary determination of sex in man. In spite of the peculiar solution of the problem, it deserves attention, in view of the authority of the author. According to the principles of the theory of hereditary transmission, the sex-determining factor is, judging by the evidence, the father. According to the law of probability, since there are 50 per cent male and 50 per cent female elements present, the chances for boys and girls would have always to be the same. In a certain percentage of the marriages, the male births are to the female births actually as 1:1. The offspring of other marriages are, on the contrary, chiefly boys—of still others, only girls. Statistics show that there is a distinct excess of male births over female

<h3>The Recording of Statistics on Disease</h3> In place of the detailed blanks heretofore in use for recording disease statistics, certain leagues of Rhenish<i>krankenkassen</i>, taking account of the inaccuracies of medical diagnosis and the use of deceptive terms on the sickness certificates, have adopted the following form or schedule. Dr. Teleky, an industrial physician of the Rhine Province, publishes a report on the new form in a recent number of the<i>Deutsche medizinische Wochenschrift:</i>1. <h3>The Value of Protective Inoculation Against Diphtheria</h3> During recent decades, Germany has not suffered to an inordinate extent from diphtheria. The extent to which spontaneous retrogression of morbidity and timely administration of diphtheria antitoxin each may be responsible is an open question. An inquiry was instituted by Prof. J. Schwalbe on the incidence of diphtheria and was published in the<i>Deutsche medizinische Wochenschrift</i>, of which he is the editor. This brought forth the information that diphtheria in many sections has retrogressed to such an extent that it is sometimes difficult to secure sufficient instruction material for students. Only in a few places does the opposite condition prevail; more particularly, in Berlin. Still, the local increase of diphtheria in a few places has directed attention to active immunization against the disease, and the Prussian Landesgesundheitsrat (council on health), at a meeting held in November, recommended widespread prophylactic inoculation. <h3>The Prize Offering of the Deutsche Medizinische Wochenschrift</h3> As mentioned in a previous letter, the editorial department of the<i>Deutsche medizinische Wochenschrift</i>(Berlin) offered, the beginning of this year, special prizes for the best contributions on the subject of "The Best Course of Medical Study, Particularly for the Training of a Practicing Physician." Only practitioners were invited to participate in the contest, since it could be assumed that university professors have sufficient opportunity to express themselves on the subject of reforms in the medical curriculum, in their suggestions to the central government. According to the terms of the prize offer, the contributions submitted in competition were to consider also the justification of the criticism on the character of the present-day medical profession and on the mode of thinking and the behavior of the modern physician, and, in that connection, were to deal with the question as to whether the medical

<h3>Women in Industry and Suicide</h3> Suicide is more frequent in men than in women. Before the war, for every 100 male there were 34.2 female suicides; in 1920, 53.9; in 1924, 37.3. The percentage of women has fallen again in the last few years in Hamburg. The number of female suicides recently has risen and that of male suicides has fallen. Writing in the<i>Deutsche medizinische Wochenschrift</i>, Professor Hanauer comes to the conclusion that the participation of women in industry favors suicide. Since the winning of "woman's rights," woman "is thus paying a high price for her equality." This is particularly evident in Russia. Before the war the proportion of male to female suicides was 4: 1. After the war, when women were granted equality in social life, the percentage of female suicides was doubled or trebled. <h3>Researches on the Action of Iodine on Heart and Arteries</h3> The effect of iodine therapy in arteriosclerosis is notoriously uncertain. Whereas iodine is a sure aid in vascular changes of syphilitic origin, many eminent clinicians contend that it has no effect in the sclerosis of old age. According to the results of an inquiry instituted some time ago by Dr. J. Schwalbe, editor of the<i>Deutsche medizinische Wochenschrift</i>, among the directors of German university clinics, very few of them have observed good effects from iodine treatment in arteriosclerosis of old age. The experiment recently reported to the Berliner Medizinische Gesellschaft by Professor Guggenheimer, assistant at the Berliner Medizinische Klinik of Professor Goldschneider, are, therefore, all the more significant.
