High-dimensional quantum key distribution using orbital angular momentum of single photons from a colloidal quantum dot at room temperature

High-dimensional quantum key distribution (HDQKD) is a promising avenue to address the inherent limitations of basic quantum key distribution (QKD) protocols. However, experimental realizations of HDQKD to date have relied on indeterministic photon sources that limit the achievable key rate. In this paper, we demonstrate a full emulation of a HDQKD system using a single colloidal giant quantum dot (gQD) as a deterministic, compact, and room-temperature single-photon source (SPS). We demonstrate a practical protocol by encoding information in a high-dimensional space (d = 3) of the orbital angular momentum of the photons. Our experimental configuration incorporates two spatial light modulators for encoding and decoding the spatial information carried by individual photons. Our experimental demonstration establishes the feasibility of utilizing high radiative quantum yield gQDs as practical SPSs for HDQKD. We also experimentally demonstrate surpassing the traditional d = 2 QKD capacity with comparable error rates, indicating a significant improvement in performance while maintaining reliability.

Design principles for >90% efficiency and >99% indistinguishability broadband quantum dot cavities

Abstract Quantum dots have the potential to be one of the brightest deterministic single photon sources with high end applications in quantum computing and cluster state generation. In this work, we re-examine the design of simple micropillars by meticulously examining the structural effects of the decay into leaky channels beyond an atom-like cavity estimation. We show that precise control of the side losses with the diameter and avoidance of propagating Bloch modes in the distributed Bragg reflectors can result in easy-to-manufacture broadband (Q≈ 750 − 2500) micropillars, allowing for broad optical coherent control pulses necessary for high single photon purity (> 99.2 − 99.99% achievable) while simultaneously demonstrating extremely high efficiency out the top (90.5% − 96.4%). We also demonstrate that such cavities naturally decouple from the phonon sideband, with the phonon sideband reducing by a factor of 5 − 33 allowing us to predict that the photons should show 98.5% − 99.8% indistinguishability without the need for filtering.

Metrological characterization of a commercial single-photon source with high photon flux emission

We present a comprehensive metrological characterization of a commercial single-photon source with high photon flux emission for use in radiometry. The source is based on an InGaAs quantum dot in a micropillar. A comparative analysis of two excitation schemes—phonon-assisted excitation and two-photon excitation—explores differences in excitation power dependence, temporal stability and single-photon purity. The commercial source exhibits excellent properties for the field of quantum radiometry, achieving simultaneously a photon flux of (17.19 ± 0.09) million photons/s for a pulse repetition rate of 79.4 MHz, and a single-photon purity of 98%. Its optical power of (3.68 ± 0.02) pW is directly determined with a traceably calibrated low-noise photodiode. The ability to directly compare the photocurrent in a low-noise photodiode with the count rate at a single-photon avalanche detector allows for a seamless transition between the classical and quantum realizations of optical power. Therefore, we were able to build another bridge between classical and quantum radiometry by using a deterministic single-photon source.

High-rate intercity quantum key distribution with a semiconductor single-photon source

Quantum key distribution (QKD) enables the transmission of information that is secure against general attacks by eavesdroppers. The use of on-demand quantum light sources in QKD protocols is expected to help improve security and maximum tolerable loss. Semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) are a promising building block for quantum communication applications because of the deterministic emission of single photons with high brightness and low multiphoton contribution. Here we report on the first intercity QKD experiment using a bright deterministic single photon source. A BB84 protocol based on polarisation encoding is realised using the high-rate single photons in the telecommunication C-band emitted from a semiconductor QD embedded in a circular Bragg grating structure. Utilising the 79 km long link with 25.49 dB loss (equivalent to 130 km for the direct-connected optical fibre) between the German cities of Hannover and Braunschweig, a record-high secret key bits per pulse of 4.8 × 10−5 with an average quantum bit error ratio of ~ 0.65% are demonstrated. An asymptotic maximum tolerable loss of 28.11 dB is found, corresponding to a length of 144 km of standard telecommunication fibre. Deterministic semiconductor sources therefore challenge state-of-the-art QKD protocols and have the potential to excel in measurement device independent protocols and quantum repeater applications.

Design of GaAs microcavity on SiN waveguide for efficient single-photon generation by resonant excitation

Silicon nitride (SiN) photonic circuits are attracting significant interest as a platform for photonic quantum information processing. Integration of deterministic single photon sources (SPSs) is required for large-scale single-photon-based quantum applications. InAs/GaAs quantum dots (QDs) have been demonstrated to be state-of-the-art deterministic SPSs under resonant excitation. However, InAs/GaAs QD SPSs integrated on chip often suffer from unwanted crosstalk from scattering of resonant excitation laser. Moreover, the mismatch in refractive indices of SiN and GaAs impedes efficient coupling of single photons into the photonic circuit. In this work, we design a GaAs photonic crystal (PhC) nanobeam cavity with an embedded QD on top of a SiN waveguide in SiO2 that can suppress crosstalk from resonant excitation and realize high coupling efficiency at the same time. The crosstalk is reduced by employing a carefully designed nanobeam cavity that removes complex structures around the excitation spot. The high coupling efficiency is achieved with a weak hybridized mirror formed by proximity of GaAs PhC nanobeam and SiN waveguide that makes the cavity and helps transferring photons into the waveguide. This enables more than 90% coupling efficiency. The designed device is expected to be a bright source of indistinguishable photons.

Scalable Bright and Pure Single Photon Sources by Droplet Epitaxy on InP Nanowire Arrays.

High-quality quantum light sources are crucial components for the implementation of practical and reliable quantum technologies. The persistent challenge, however, is the lack of scalable and deterministic single photon sources that can be synthesized reproducibly. Here, we present a combination of droplet epitaxy with selective area epitaxy to realize the deterministic growth of single quantum dots in nanowire arrays. By optimization of the single quantum dot growth and the nanowire cavity design, single emissions are effectively coupled with the dominant mode of the nanowires to realize Purcell enhancement. The resonance-enhanced quantum emitter system boasts a brightness of millions of counts per second with nanowatt excitation power, a short radiation lifetime of 350 ± 5 ps, and a high single-photon purity with g(2)(0) value of 0.05 with continuous wave above-band excitation. Finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulation results show that the emissions of single quantum dots are coupled into the TM01 mode of the nanowires, giving a Purcell factor ≈ 3. Our technology can be used for creating on-chip scalable single photon sources for future quantum technology applications including quantum networks, quantum computation, and quantum imaging.

Quantum key distribution using deterministic single-photon sources over a field-installed fibre link

Quantum-dot-based single-photon sources are key assets for quantum information technology, supplying on-demand scalable quantum resources for computing and communication. However, long-lasting issues such as limited long-term stability and source brightness have traditionally impeded their adoption in real-world applications. Here, we realize a quantum key distribution field trial using true single photons across an 18-km-long dark fibre, located in the Copenhagen metropolitan area, using an optimized, state-of-the-art, quantum-dot single-photon source frequency-converted to the telecom wavelength. A secret key generation rate of > 2 kbits/s realized over a 9.6 dB channel loss is achieved with a polarization-encoded BB84 scheme, showing remarkable stability for more than 24 hours of continuous operation. Our results highlight the maturity of deterministic single-photon source technology while paving the way for advanced single-photon-based communication protocols, including fully device-independent quantum key distribution, towards the goal of a quantum internet.

Optical Memory in a Microfabricated Rubidium Vapor Cell.

Scalability presents a central platform challenge for the components of current quantum network implementations that can be addressed by microfabrication techniques. We demonstrate a high-bandwidth optical memory using a warm alkali atom ensemble in a microfabricated vapor cell compatible with wafer-scale fabrication. By applying an external tesla-order magnetic field, we explore a novel ground-state quantum memory scheme in the hyperfine Paschen-Back regime, where individual optical transitions can be addressed in a Doppler-broadened medium. Working on the ^{87}Rb D_{2} line, where deterministic quantum dot single-photon sources are available, we demonstrate bandwidth-matching with hundreds of megahertz broad light pulses keeping such sources in mind. For a storage time of 80ns we measure an end-to-end efficiency of η_{e2e}^{80 ns}=3.12(17)%, corresponding to an internal efficiency of η_{int}^{0 ns}=24(3)%, while achieving a signal-to-noise ratio of SNR=7.9(8) with coherent pulses at the single-photon level.

High-speed thin-film lithium niobate quantum processor driven by a solid-state quantum emitter.

Scalable photonic quantum computing architectures pose stringent requirements on photonic processing devices. The needs for low-loss high-speed reconfigurable circuits and near-deterministic resource state generators are some of the most challenging requirements. Here, we develop an integrated photonic platform based on thin-film lithium niobate and interface it with deterministic solid-state single-photon sources based on quantum dots in nanophotonic waveguides. The generated photons are processed with low-loss circuits programmable at speeds of several gigahertz. We realize a variety of key photonic quantum information processing functionalities with the high-speed circuits, including on-chip quantum interference, photon demultiplexing, and reprogrammability of a four-mode universal photonic circuit. These results show a promising path forward for scalable photonic quantum technologies by merging integrated photonics with solid-state deterministic photon sources in a heterogeneous approach to scaling up.

Efficient room-temperature molecular single-photon sources for quantum key distribution.

Quantum key distribution (QKD) allows the distribution of cryptographic keys between multiple users in an information-theoretic secure way, exploiting quantum physics. While current QKD systems are mainly based on attenuated laser pulses, deterministic single-photon sources could give concrete advantages in terms of secret key rate (SKR) and security owing to the negligible probability of multi-photon events. Here, we introduce and demonstrate a proof-of-concept QKD system exploiting a molecule-based single-photon source operating at room temperature and emitting at 785 nm. With an estimated maximum SKR of 0.5 Mbps, our solution paves the way for room-temperature single-photon sources for quantum communication protocols.

Cavity-enhanced zero-phonon emission from an ensemble of G centers in a silicon-on-insulator microring

We report the incorporation of an ensemble of G centers in silicon-on-insulator (SOI) microrings using ion implantation and conventional nanofabrication. The coupling between the emitters and the resonant modes of the microrings is studied using continuous-wave and time-resolved microphotoluminescence (PL) experiments. We observe the resonant modes of the microrings on PL spectra, on the wide spectral range that is covered by G center emission. By finely tuning the size of the microrings, we match their zero-phonon line at 1278 nm with a resonant mode of quality factor around 3000 and volume 7.2 (λ/n)3. The zero-phonon line intensity is enhanced by a factor of 5, both in continuous-wave and time-resolved measurements. This is attributed to the Purcell enhancement of zero-phonon spontaneous emission into the resonant mode and quantitatively understood considering the distribution of the G center dipoles. Despite the enhancement of the zero-phonon emission, we do not observe any sizeable decrease in the average lifetime of the G centers, which points at a low radiative yield (<10%). We reveal the detrimental impact of parasitic defects in heavily implanted silicon and discuss the perspectives for quantum electrodynamics experiments with individual color centers in lightly implanted SOI rings. Our results provide key information for the development of deterministic single-photon sources for integrated quantum photonics.

Purcell enhancement and polarization control of single-photon emitters in monolayer WSe2 using dielectric nanoantennas.

Two-dimensional (2D) materials have shown great promise as hosts for high-purity deterministic single-photon sources. In the last few years, the underlying physics of single photon emission in 2D materials have been uncovered, and their optical properties have been improved to meet criteria for a variety of quantum technologies and applications. In this work, we take advantage of the unique characteristics of dielectric nanoantennas in manipulating the electromagnetic response on a sub-wavelength scale to localize and control defect-based single-photon emitters (SPEs) in 2D layered materials. We show that dielectric nanoantennas are capable of inducing high Purcell enhancement >20 and therefore brighter single-photon emission, which is characterized by a reduction of the emitters' radiative lifetimes and enhancement of their brightness by more than an order of magnitude. We demonstrate that the sub-wavelength-scale dielectric nanoantennas can be designed to also impose a predetermined strain profile that determines the confinement potential of the SPE, leading to robust control over the optical polarization with up to 94% extinction ratio. The combination of large Purcell enhancement, polarization orientation, and site control through strain engineering demonstrates the advantages and unique capabilities of dielectric nanoantennas for enhancing the quantum optical properties of 2D SPEs for quantum information technologies.

Analysis and Design of Low-Loss and Fast All-Optical Switch Elements on Silicon Nitride for Integrated Quantum Photonics

Fast and ultra-low loss single-photon switching and routing are essential for photonic quantum computation and communication. To address this need in a scalable fashion, all-optical switches that can be fabricated in an ultra-low loss and mature Si <inline-formula xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"><tex-math notation="LaTeX">$_{3}$</tex-math></inline-formula> N <inline-formula xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"><tex-math notation="LaTeX">$_{4}$</tex-math></inline-formula> photonic integrated circuit (PIC) foundry platform are designed and optimized for sub-ns switching times suitable for deterministic quantum-dot single-photon sources. The working principle relies on cross-phase modulation (XPM) of the single photons with a 1550-nm pump pulse and is enhanced by a ring resonator. Two different designs of the primary switch element are theoretically studied, namely a ring resonator intensity switch (RRIS) based on resonance shifting due to XPM and a ring resonator phase switch (RRPS) acting as an all-optical phase shifter in a Mach–Zehnder interferometer. As a novel approach to speed up the switching, chirped pre-emphasis and wipe sections for the pump pulses are utilized. A design tool is established from analytical expressions and serves as starting point for further optimization using a dedicated travelling-wave model (TWM). The TWM demonstrates the feasibility of both designs to be driven by either the proposed pre-emphasis pulse shape or a train of chirped Gaussian pulses. While the RRPS turns out to require less pump energy, its operation is more sensitive to pump-power fluctuations. Insertion losses below 0.1 dB and a power consumption below 5 nJ at 1 GHz switching rates for both configurations prove the potential of this concept for scalable quantum photonic applications.

Violation of Bell's inequality with quantum-dot single-photon sources

We investigate the possibility of realizing a loophole-free violation of Bell's inequality using deterministic single-photon sources. We provide a detailed analysis of a scheme to achieve such violations over long distances with immediate extensions to device-independent quantum key distribution. We investigate the effect of key experimental imperfections that are unavoidable in real-world single-photon sources including the finite degree of photon indistinguishability, single-photon purity, and the overall source efficiency. We benchmark the performance requirements to state-of-the-art deterministic single-photon sources based on quantum dots in photonic nanostructures and find that experimental realizations appear to be within reach. We also evaluate the requirements for a post-selected version of the protocol, which relaxes the demanding requirements with respect to the source efficiency.

Hybrid Integration of Deterministic Quantum Dot‐Based Single‐Photon Sources with CMOS‐Compatible Silicon Carbide Photonics

AbstractThin film 4H‐silicon carbide (4H‐SiC) is emerging as a contender for realizing large‐scale optical quantum circuits due to its high CMOS technology compatibility and large optical nonlinearities. Though, challenges remain in producing wafer‐scale 4H‐SiC thin film on insulator (4H‐SiCOI) for dense integration of photonic circuits, and in efficient coupling of deterministic quantum emitters that are essential for scalable quantum photonics. Here, hybrid integration of self‐assembled InGaAs quantum dot (QD)‐based single‐photon sources (SPSs) with wafer‐scale 4H‐SiC photonic chips prepared by ion slicing technique is demonstrated. By designing a bilayer vertical coupler, generation and highly efficient routing of single‐photon emission in the hybrid quantum photonic chip are realized. Furthermore, a chip‐integrated beamsplitter operation for triggered single photons through fabricating a 1 × 2 multimode interferometer (MMI) with a symmetric power splitting ratio of 50:50 is realized. The successful demonstration of heterogeneously integrating QD‐based SPSs on 4H‐SiC photonic chip prepared by ion slicing technique constitutes an important step toward CMOS‐compatible, fast reconfigurable quantum photonic circuits with deterministic SPSs.

Numerical Optimization of a Nanophotonic Cavity by Machine Learning for Near-Unity Photon Indistinguishability at Room Temperature.

Room-temperature (RT), on-chip deterministic generation of indistinguishable photons coupled to photonic integrated circuits is key for quantum photonic applications. Nevertheless, high indistinguishability (I) at RT is difficult to obtain due to the intrinsic dephasing of most deterministic single-photon sources (SPS). Here, we present a numerical demonstration of the design and optimization of a hybrid slot-Bragg nanophotonic cavity that achieves a theoretical near-unity I and a high coupling efficiency (β) at RT for a variety of single-photon emitters. Our numerical simulations predict modal volumes in the order of 10–3(λ/2n)3, allowing for strong coupling of quantum photonic emitters that can be heterogeneously integrated. We show that high I and β should be possible by fine-tuning the quality factor (Q) depending on the intrinsic properties of the single-photon emitter. Furthermore, we perform a machine learning optimization based on the combination of a deep neural network and a genetic algorithm (GA) to further decrease the modal volume by almost 3 times while relaxing the tight dimensions of the slot width required for strong coupling. The optimized device has a slot width of 20 nm. The design requires fabrication resolution in the limit of the current state-of-the-art technology. Also, the condition for high I and β requires a positioning accuracy of the quantum emitter at the nanometer level. Although the proposal is not a scalable technology, it can be suitable for experimental demonstration of single-photon operation.

Tunable microcavities coupled to rare-earth quantum emitters

Electro-optical control of on-chip photonic devices is an essential tool for efficient integrated photonics. Lithium niobate on insulator (LNOI) is an emerging platform for on-chip photonics due to its large electro-optic coefficient and high nonlinearity. Integrating quantum emitters into LNOI would extend their versatility in classic photonics to quantum computing and communication. Here, we incorporate rare-earth ion (REI) quantum emitters into electro-optical tunable lithium niobite (LN) thin films and demonstrate control of LN microcavities coupled to REIs over a frequency range of 160 GHz with 5 µs switching speed. Dynamic control of the cavities enables modulation of the Purcell enhancement of REIs with short time constants. Using Purcell enhancement, we show evidence of detecting single Y b 3 + ions in LN cavities. Coupling quantum emitters in fast tunable photonic devices is an efficient method to shape the waveform of the emitter. It also offers a platform to encode quantum information in the integration of a spectral–temporal–spatial domain to achieve high levels of channel multiplexing, as well as an approach to generate deterministic single-photon sources.

Fabrication of Efficient Single-Emitter Plasmonic Patch Antennas by Deterministic In Situ Optical Lithography using Spatially Modulated Light.

Single-emitter plasmonic patch antennas are room-temperature deterministic single-photon sources, which exhibit highly accelerated and directed single-photon emission. However, for efficient operation these structures require 3D nanoscale deterministic control of emitter positioning within the device, which is a demanding task, especially when emitter damage during fabrication is a major concern. To overcome this limitation, the deterministic room-temperature in situ optical lithography protocol uses spatially modulated light to position a plasmonic structure nondestructively on any selected single-emitter with 3D nanoscale control. Herein, the emission statistics of such plasmonic antennas that embed a deterministically positioned single colloidal CdSe/CdS quantum dot, which highlight acceleration and brightness of emission, are analyzed. It is demonstrated that the presented antenna induces a 1000-fold effective increase in the absorption cross-section, and, under high pumping, these antennas show nonlinearly enhanced emission.
