A spectrofluorimetric method for determination of acid phosphatase activity in serum using α-naphthyl phosphate as substrate is described. The inhibition of prostatic a-naphthyl phosphatase by l-tartrate has been shown to be competitive, and values for inhibitor and substrate constants are reported. In serum from a case of cancer of the female breast a considerable acid phosphatase activity towards α-naphthyl phosphate has been found, and this activity diners from that of the prostatic type enzyme in resisting inhibition by tartrate.
