Recent uses of bismuth derivatives in organic synthesis. The use of bismuth and of its derivatives in organic synthesis has received an increasing recent interest with studies involving new bismuth(III) salts. These salts have shown a Lewis acid character allowing their use in coupling reactions, in protection/deprotection processes and in oxidation reactions. Such systems are generally catalytic, may work in aqueous or in solventless systems and involve a relatively non-toxic metal. These features are of great interest in the area of green chemistry. Lactam-derived Vinyl Triflates and Phosphates in the Synthesis of N-heterocycles

In the last decade there has been a growing interest in the coupling reactions of lactam-derived vinyl triflates and phosphates. The usefulness and versatility of these lactam derivatives in organic synthesis will be highlighted in this review that deals with the methods for their preparation, their stability and reactivity, and applications to the synthesis of natural compounds. Readily available 1,2,3,4-tetrachloro-5,5-dimethoxy- cyclopenta-1,3-diene (2) is an excellent cyclic diene for Diels-Alder reaction with a vast variety of dienophiles. The products so formed (norbornene derivatives) constitute important building blocks for the synthesis of diverse complex natural as well as non-natural products. Apart from very high endo selectivity associated with Diels-Alder reactions, there are several other fascinating features associated with these bicyclic products which make them convenient entities in the synthesis of complex molecules. The most important is the rigid framework that act as a powerful template to provide high degree of selectivity and directional nature to various substituents. The proposed article is intended to focus on Diels-Alder reactions of 2 and the applications of norbornene derivatives in organic synthesis.

Amino Acid Derivatives in Organic Synthesis, Part 4 [1]: Facile Synthesis of Heterocycles Containing a Glycine Residue

Pyridines, thiazolopyridines and pyrazolopyrans containing glycinate residue were prepared by reacting N-cyanoacryloglycinate ylidenes with active methylene compounds via a Michael addition - intracyclization synthetic pathway. Simple routes for the synthesis of heterocycles with an amino acid residue were previously reported [1-3] as the incorportation of these residues improves the pharmacokinetics and toxicity of active compounds [4,5]. However, trials to deesterify these residues for coupling purposes were unsuccessful. So, we tried herein new approaches for synthesizing heterocyles carrying one or two glycine moieties with free carboxylic acid group to facilitate further peptide linkage [6] on one hand and on the other one could be able to form metal chelates, a property having a significant output on the toxicological behaviour [7]

Cyclopentadienyl Titanium Derivatives in Organic Synthesis

<p> Among the numerous known compounds of titanium only relatively few have found wide applicability in organic synthesis. Prominent among these are some organotitanium compounds with one or two cyclopentadienyl substituents, which have found increasing use in recent years for a variety of synthetic transformations. Unlike many other transition metals, the use of titanium is not limited only to catalytic systems, but it is often used in stoichiometric quantities, due to the high abundance, low cost and low intrinsic toxicity of this element. </p> <p> This review focuses on the use of cyclopentadienyl titanium derivatives for the synthesis of titanium-free products. The reactions are classified according to the type of chemical transformation and illustrative examples are given for both stoichiometric and catalytic systems. Wherever applicable, asymmetric variants are also highlighted. </p> <p> After a general introduction on the most synthetically useful classes of cyclopentadienyl titanium compounds and their preparation, the review continues with the various types of reductions, including the hydrogenation, hydrosilylation and hydrometallation of unsaturated derivatives, and several methods for dehalogenation and deoxygenation. This is followed by a discussion of titanium-mediated oxidations, including alkene epoxidation and ketone hydroxylation. Several reactions in which the titanium compounds serve as Lewis acids are then discussed, including aldol reactions and cycloadditions. A number of methods involving the formation of C-C bonds, such as addition to carbonyls, nitriles and alkynes are then reviewed. This is followed by a discussion of methods involving the formation of C=C bonds from carbonyls, including pertinent synthetic applications. Several types of titanium-mediated cyclizations are then discussed with an emphasis on intramolecular reductive coupling reactions. Finally, an overview of several types of polymerization processes is given with an emphasis on Ziegler-Natta, ring-opening metathesis polymerizations, silane polymerizations and miscellaneous other polymerizations mediated by cyclopentadienyl titanium compounds. </p> <p> Overall, this review not only illustrates the high chemical diversity of titanium but it also demonstrates the unique reactivity exhibited by the cyclopentadienyl substituents.</p>

Divalent lanthanide derivatives in organic synthesis—II: Mechanism of SmI 2 reactions in presence of ketones and organic halides

Aprotic THF solutions of SmI 2 reduce aikyl halides or tosylates into the corresponding alkanes free of coupling products. The mechanism of this reaction involves an electron transfer from samarium to halides and hydrogen abstraction from THF. Aldehydes are selectively reduced by SmI 2 in presence of a proton donor. Ketones react with organic halides in the presence of SmI 2 giving tertiary alcohols. Mechanisms of these reactions are discussed. Some evidence including catalytic effects of FeCl 3 are given for electron transfers from SmI 2 towards ketones and halides.
